Biddykins Hemp Fitted Night Nappy

Description: The Biddykins Night Nappy is a One-Size (OS) fitted nappy that consists of a 2-layer hemp fleece shell with 2 snap-in hemp fleece inserts (4 layers each) and a separate 5 layer pure bamboo insert with a stay-dry suede top layer. The Biddykins hemp fitted has 4 rise settings to adjust the size as well as a single waist snap.

Note: The Biddykins hemp fitted is not waterproof and only the absorbent part of a night nappy, it will need a cover to be waterproof.

First impression: The fitted has a pretty rainbow serge. I like the fact that it's made of natural fibres, hemp fleece is great for inserts since it's very absorbent.

Ease of use: The Biddykins fitted is a OS fitted that is adjusted with a snap down rise (SDR). I usually prefer a fold down rise (FDR) with fitteds as it creates less bulk with thick fabrics and bulky nappies like fitteds, but on the flip side the SDR will be more familiar and easier to use for inexperienced cloth users. The inserts are easy to snap-in and the separate bamboo insert is put on top of the other inserts. Being a fitted it needs a cover to be waterproof so it's a two-step system. First put the fitted on and then the cover.

Night nappies need to be rinsed in warm water in the morning before storing in your dry pail for wash day. Wash as normal on wash day and then line dry or tumble dry on low*. The drying time of the Biddykins fitted is fair for a fitted since the nappy and inserts can be dried separately.

* Be sure to check retailer guidelines on tumble drying, some do not permit it and it can then affect your warranty.

Fit: I found the fit of this nappy a bit awkward when my daughter was younger and it took a bit more effort to get a good fit. I think this is due to the shape of the nappy, it's broad between the legs and the wings are narrow and long which doesn't give the nappy enough balance to pull it all together nicely. The wings are very stretchy, but due to them being so narrow and long it doesn't affect the elastics around the leg enough so I mostly only get pull in the waist, meaning it's more difficult to adjust the fit around the legs. The fitted did start fitting better as my toddler got older, as she got older though I preferred to add the third insert between the outside of the fitted shell and a cover (the fitted shell rise became too short if all inserts were used inside)**. If you struggle with the fit, to avoid premature leaks (due to fit issues) ensure that the waterproof cover you use is fitted well over the Biddykins fitted (make sure there's no leg gaps or tummy gaps when the cover is on the bum). Comfort level can be affected by a poor fit. As the nature of fitteds and night nappies, the nappy is bulky.

** Keep in mind that this is our fit experience, each body type will be different as fit can be affected by body shape.

Biddykins hemp night fitted shell and inserts

Value for money: This nappy is well-priced for a fitted with it's absorbency capabilities and should fit into any budget.

Performance: It performed well on my light to medium night wetter. With my absorbency tests the complete fitted held about 394ml***. That means this nappy will hold up for medium night wetters, due to it already having 3 inserts you won't be able to comfortably boost within the nappy so I suggest boosting between the night nappy and a cover for heavy wetters, which will mean the least bulk and best fit. It will also perform well for heavy day wetters or for long naps. The hemp fleece inserts did distort a bit with washing and they are quite narrow so make sure you place them in the wetzone so they absorb optimally.

*** The tested value is very conservative and only taken after all possible moisture has been wrung out of the nappy by hand so the nappy could possibly still absorb more to reach a soaked value or less depending on other factors like fit.

Overall impression: This nappy has great absorbency for it's price, so it's a good budget night nappy. The fit does concern me though as it might discourage users from night cloth (as incorrect fit can cause premature leaking). We did not reach for this nappy often but I did try it every now and again to see if the fit improves.

Description: The Little Lamb Bamboo fitted is a sized nappy*. The fitted cover consists of an outer bamboo layer with a microfibre core layer. Sewn-in on the back of the fitted cover is a 2 layer bamboo booster. The fabric for the Little Lamb fitteds are shrink proof due to the way the fabric is constructed, they use a yarn that is knitted onto a mesh base hence these fitteds keep their shape very well. The fitted has very soft rolled leg elastics and a soft back elastic to prevent poop explosions. The fitted has a velcro closure with laundry tabs and a cross-over design for extended size adjustments. Each fitted comes with a super soft fleece liner as stay-dry layer.

* Size chart according to Little Lamb nappies:
Size 1:3-9kg,
Size 2: 9-17kg,
Size 3: 16+kg.

First impression: I was quite excited to finally try a Little Lamb fitted, it's been on my to-try list for a few years. The different look to the fabric caught my eye, very interesting the weave on the mesh lining. I also noticed the super soft fleece liner, it's magic fleece somehow, so soft!

Ease of use: I'm a big fan of snapless fitteds due to it being so much quicker to fasten than snaps, but I must say that the Little Lamb fitted convinced me of velcro for fitteds as well, easy to use, efficient and quick. Being a fitted and a shaped nappy it's one of the easier night nappies to use, it does take a bit more time and effort than one-step night nappies as it's a two-step solution (so you need to add a cover to make it waterproof)*. Size is adjusted just by the waist velcro fasteners, so no rise snaps or FDR to confuse new users. If using at night, rinse in warm water in the morning and then add to your nappy pail for wash day.

On wash day, make sure to secure the velcro on to the laundry tabs then wash as normal and line dry or tumble dry on low. Due to being a fitted it does take a bit longer to dry, but drying time is slightly shortened due to the microfibre core in the fitted cover and only having a 2 layer booster, I therefore found the drying time to be quite fair for a fitted. An added bonus is the sewn-in insert, so no need to search for matching inserts after wash day.

* Tip: I used mine with the LittleLamb bombproof cover which also has velcro fastening, making the two-step solution quick to fit. (Just keep in mind, velcro is easier for toddlers to open than snaps)

Fit: I tested the size 2 Little Lamb fitted on my 1 year old (12kg) LO and it fits really well, it's gentle around chubby legs and it has quite a big rise, so sits a bit higher on the tummy and back, therefore it still has lots of room for her to grow. I can see that it'll easily fit until she potty learns. It is a bit bulky which is expected from a fitted, but it's quite trim between the legs, meaning more comfort. It's also not overly bulky, so can be used as a day nappy for heavy day wetters. (Bulk is comparable to a microfibre AIO). I find the elastics super soft against chubby legs and the rolled elastics are one of my favourite features in this nappy.

Value for money: The Bamboo fitteds are priced on average comparing it to other fitteds with the same absorbency capabilities (you can extend savings by buying a bulk night pack). Taking into account the additional luxury quality add-ons like the rolled elastics and specific mesh type fabric (no-shrinking guaranteed), this nappy is good value for money.

Performance: I used the Little Lamb bamboo fitted over the last 2 months and it's been a fail-proof and easy solution for my light to medium wetter. With my absorbency tests the fitted held about 303ml** meaning this nappy will hold up for medium night wetters and heavy day wetters, and can be boosted to fit a wider range of medium wetters or heavy night wetters. The fitted has held it's shape brilliantly and the velcro is still super sticky, the fabric still feels soft.

** The tested value is very conservative and only taken after all possible moisture has been wrung out of the inserts by hand so the nappy can still absorb more to reach a soaked value.

Overall impression: This is a good option as a night nappy or for long naps, quick to put on and easy to use. The rolled elastics ensures a comfortable fit for your LO. It's been a delight to use this nappy!

Day 1: Night nappy challenge, why?

So why am I doing the SACNU night nappy challenge? I'm part of the SACNU (South African Cloth Nappy Users) team and we're passionate about helping parents cloth diaper successfully and showing that cloth nappies are accessible to everyone. Cloth nappies for night time can sometimes seem very daunting, especially for parents with heavy wetters. That's why we decided to do this challenge so we can help and encourage parents to try night time cloth in a fun way.

By asking parents to use at least 2 or more types and brands we're hoping that they can experience a variety of night time cloth and in that way find the perfect solution for them. My eldest was an extreme heavy wetter as a baby and I know the struggle in finding a perfect nappy, after lots of tweaking and trial and error, I ended up loving cloth for night time and found it was the only leak-free option. There is a type of cloth nappy to fit every family's needs and budget, sometimes it might take a bit of a learning curve, but you won't find a more comfortable and breathable option than cloth.

I love a challenge and I love all things cloth! We also exclusively use cloth nappies at night already so this is a fun event for me to share with fellow cloth parents.

Review: Slow Down Products Zero Waste Solutions

I am currently focusing on moving over to a more zero waste lifestyle, slowly but surely. While we've been reducing our eco footprint by using cloth nappies and reusable menstrual solutions over the past few years, there is a lot still to be done in other areas. It can seem overwhelming when looking at the bigger picture, but the best thing to do is just to start with what you can. Every small change is good and everything adds up.

Over the past few months we have been taking small steps by using reusable bags when we go grocery shopping (and when we remember to take the bags with, I must add!). Recently we have expanded that with a few other reusable bits and bobs that I ordered from a local WAHM, Slow Down Products.

So let's jump in and I'll show you what I got and how it's working for us.

First up were these reusable produce bags. I ordered the 20 x 20 cm size, which is the smallest one I believe and I find this size very practical. It's big enough for our weekly fruit shopping hauls (and my kids go through a ton of fruit!). Something to note is that the yellow/green mesh is quite a bit sturdier than the other colours, so it's great for heavier items like potatoes, bananas, tomatoes, onions (especially when you are buying a lot in one go). I love the drawstring closure - makes it very easy to handle when at the shop and it's easy for the cashier to open it to check when weighing the items. We usually buy fruits & veggies at Food Lovers, so don't have to worry about price stickers, however I have used them at Checkers as well and then I just stick the price directly onto the bag, no problem. The sticker comes off easily with no residue. The bags fold up quite small, so it's easy to pop in your handbag or into your reusable carry bags when going shopping. We bought 4 of these bags initially and found that to not quite be enough for our needs, so I've ordered another 4 and I think that will do the trick. The amount you need is very personal and will depend on the variety of fruit/veggies you buy as well as how often you go shopping. So I would recommend buying a few and seeing how that works and then add to that as you need.

Secondly I got two bamboo straws along with two straw sleeves so you can pack the straws in your handbag for going to restaurants etc. The straws fit perfectly into the sleeve and there is a little attached elastic which keeps everything closed and contained so you don't have straws falling out all over your handbag. We have some bamboo straws which a friend gifted us with but they are a bit wider and so my kids are not the biggest fans of them. So I opted for the narrow bamboo straws this time and they are a great size with a comfortable mouth feel. I also got a coconut husk straw brush to clean the straws with and that makes clean up a breeze. But it will generally also work to give them a quick rinse after use. I did wonder how the bamboo would hold up over time with exposure to liquid, but I was needlessly worried as they are holding up perfectly. I have ordered another two so the whole family can join in on the bamboo straw fun when out and about (at home it's generally just the kids that use straws).

Lastly I picked up a Rewrabzz, which is basically the reusable alternative to cling wrap. To be fair, we didn't really use clingwrap very often before, but I was curious about these, so I figured I'd get it for those times when we do use clingwrap. I got the size small (32 x 32cm) with sweet almond oil and it comes with a string and instructions on how to tie a slipknot. The string is used to keep the wrap in place as this wrap is free from pine resin so doesn't cling to the items. The small is a good size I find for wrapping small items in the fridge - say cheese, or sandwiches to stop them drying out. You would need a bigger size to cover bigger bowls with say salad for example

Quality

In terms of quality I am very happy with all the items received and so far everything is holding up quite well (after about one and a half month's usage). I like that the items are customisable - for example you can choose the colours of your produce bags, as well as the sizes of the bags, straws, straw sleeves and Rewrabzz. The Rewrabzz are available in a few different prints too.

Bang for your buck

Prices are very reasonable in my opinion, very comparable to similar items available locally. Also bear in mind that while the initial outlay of stocking up on reusable alternatives might seem like a chunk, you end up saving money (and the environment!) in the long run. It's not all or nothing either - I like that you can buy one or two items as and when you are able to and need them.

Final thoughts

Flats Challenge 2018: Day 7, What did I learn?

Making Sunlight Gel

It's the last day of the flats challenge, and it looks like I wanted to keep it interesting! After being away for work (and a bit of leisure in between too) for 3 days and arriving back home. I realised my detergent wash finished. Oops! Living on a farm and a small farming community, even if I was keen to drive all the way to town to get detergent, no shop would be open. I did have a Sunlight bar at home, so my son and hubby joined in to help me make Sunlight Gel* for my last bit of hand washing. I'm very relieved I kept a bigger stash of flats for this week now, otherwise I would have run out today. After the Sunlight gel sets I have about 18 flats to wash and hang up.

Flat challenge 2018: Day 4, My washing routine

It's day 4 of the flats challenge and things are still going well, it's far less of an effort than I expected it to be. I do try and plan my schedule a bit better to fit in my nappy duties, but overall it's been smooth sailing.

One of the many reasons we use cloth nappies is due to my children getting a very bad burn/rash from disposables, so I always make cloth work, even on holiday. That means I'm not new to hand washing cloth nappies. I've done it a few times when we don't have access to a washing machine on a trip, but it's the first time I'm using the bucket and plunger method and what a game changer it is! I don't know why I never made more of an effort to take my bucket and plunger with, it is so much easier washing this way! Quick, painless and efficient. I'll definitely take along my plunger with our next trip.

Flat challenge 2018: Day 3, my favourite flat fold

It's day 3 of the flats challenge and we've settled into our routine of using flats. I've brushed off my rusty snappy'ing skills and I'm getting the flats on quicker again (Yay! As all parents know, with a busy toddler you only have a small window to get a nappy on ;D). It's made me realise how long ago I've used my flats, for some reason I've settled into a habit of only taking them out when we're on holiday, but I'm reminded this week why I love flats. We've been having cold rainy weather, but my flats still dry quickly and on time, especially the flannel flats, flats are easy to wash and they give a really trim fit OTB*!

Flat challenge 2018: Day 2, What?

It's day 2 of the flats challenge and so far so good, washed my first batch of nappies early this morning (The bucket and plunger method makes it so easy!). I'm padfolding flats and stuffing them into covers for the aupair to use while I'm working and she's had no issues, just as easy as usual. My husband is also more than comfortable with the flats (He is usually the one that volunteers to wash them when we're cloth diapering on holiday, so he is actually enjoying the fact that I'm washing them now)

The insert is topped with athletic wicking jersey* to match the interior lining. Since it's snapless, you require a snappy to fasten it around baby. The version I tested has overlocked/serged edges, but it is also available in turned and topstitched.

Description: The Tyrilove Hybrid Fitted consists of a printed outer layer of stretchy cotton knit*, a hidden layer of water resistant softshell and an interior lining of cotton velour. It comes with a hemp fleece sandwich petal insert that snaps into the back and a booster insert that snaps onto the petal insert for a total of 8 layers and up to 16 layers in the wetzone depending on how the booster is folded. The petal insert is topped with a matching cotton velour. The diaper features a fold down rise which enables you to adjust the fit to your baby and fastens with snaps around the waist. There are three snaps on each wing as well as two crossover snap settings to make the waist smaller for a younger baby.

I'm always on the lookout for natural, cloth friendly and eco-friendly products, which is why I was excited to try the Sproglets range. The range includes bum, nipple & bug balm. Sproglets is proudly South African and handmade by the owner, Stacey.

All of the products are free from parabens, artificial perfumes, colourants and other nasties. They contain essential oils for their their scent and beneficial properties - from anti-fungal, to anti-bacterial, soothing and moisturizing to name just a few. The Sproglet range has not been tested on animals, though if you're avoiding all animal derived products, note that it does contain bees wax.
