The title is from a lyrical bit of "Faberge Falls for Shuggie"--probably the weakest song on Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?--and word has it that the album will be quite the departure from of Montreal's past. What he means by that blog post is not definite, but if he delivers the quality of Hissing Fauna, we will have nothing to complain about. I am slightly worried that he will take the band in a funk direction (I'm sorry, but of Montreal can't play funk), but here's to hoping he won't. I'll post more information on Skeletal Lamping as soon as it is available.

EDIT:

Here is more information from Pitchfork Media on the tracklist for Skeletal Lamping as well as the cover. Albums are in alphabetical order, so don't read too much into order. Unless, of course, I state it somewhere in the blurb.

Distortion - Magnetic Fields

This January-release was seemingly forgotten by music fans everywhere, but it does not prevent it from being one of the best albums of this year. In a break from the more classical and upright i, Stephin Merritt and company decided to use a musical element that they had not explored much until this album - distortion. The album hits you with a wave of soft shoegaze distortion. It gives a mystical quality to already great songs such as "Drive on Driver," "California Girls" and "Three Way." And although the group will never produce another 69 Love Songs, you could hardly imagine a better album from the band in the year 2008.

Evil Urges - My Morning Jacket

It's hard to top an album that people have alread declared your masterpiece, and it's all too easy for that musical fortress you've built to collapse under pressure. However, My Morning Jacket proved that they could deliver a fine follow-up to a masterpiece. Even though it is not as great as Z, Evil Urges boasts a number of excellent tracks, including the eponymous number, "Sec' Walkin," "Thank You Too," and "Touch Me I'm Going to Scream Pt. 2." The album may be brought down by a number of perplexing choices, but it is still a work that was well-worth the wait.

Read my review here: http://www.dailycal.org/article/101878

Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

I was introduced to the Fleet Foxes at a Blitzen Trapper concert that was part of the Noise Pop festival this February. In the review of that concert, I wrote that the band, which was the most impressive of the three opening acts, would not stay underground for long. But even I did not expect such an amazing album - or positive critical reception - for this Seattle band. Their songs are peasant ditties that are simple but overwhelmingly powerful. "White Winter Hymnal" displays intricate harmonies that could even impress the most scholarly music professor, and "Oliver James" demonstrates the vocal power of frontman Robin Pecknold. It is definitely in the top three albums of this year so far, and will likely remain in the top three throughout the rest of the year.

Hercules & Love Affair - Hercules and Love Affair

Disco has been ever-present in electronic dance music (EDM) ever since the genre arose out of the hip-hop movement of the '80s. Still, no band has managed to so effectively fuse disco into modern dance music like Hercules and Love Affair, fronted by New York DJ Andrew Butler. Hercules & Love Affair is my choice for the best of the year so far, and I doubt that many albums will better this one. It is one of the most intriguing dance albums I've ever heard, with complex rhythms that evoke those of the Talking Heads, swooping strings that marked the disco era, and the gorgeous and unique vocals of Antony Hegarty, frontman of Antony and the Johnsons. It is a masterpiece of epic proportions - proportions that do justice to the mythological hero in the band's name.

Read my review here: http://www.dailycal.org/article/101977

Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust - Sigur Rós

I did not expect to hear a song like "Gobbledigook" from Sigur Ros, a band whose music attracts adjectives such as "ethereal" and "angelic." However, not only did the Icelandic band create an uptempo indie song, but created one that could stand among the best indie songs of this year. Like "Gobbledigook," many of the songs on Sigur Ros' new album are more uptempo, but as always, the band's most striking work is the longest: "Festival" is entertaining and fascinating every moment of its nine minutes and 23 seconds.

Read my review here: http://www.dailycal.org/article/101976

Nouns - No Age

Pitchfork probably overrated this one, but this all-out indie punk thrashing is suprisingly engaging and satisfying. Just look to "Eraser" if you don't believe me; the song has incredible guitar work, from its jolts of distortion to its more calculated picking, the song testifies to No Age's ability. The vocals are quite rollicking, far more thrilling than those of many of No Age's indie counterparts. And while the closer may be called "Brain Burner," the album is not overly simplistic or unintelligent. With all its intricacies and subtleties, the album is a work of a band that knows exactly what they're doing.

Third - Portishead

Portishead's new album may be incredibly dark, but it's also undeniably enticing. Beth Gibbon's voice leads the way of the band from the opening "Silence," whose bass and strings chill you to your spine even before Gibbon's vocals enter. However, the trip-hop group also warms up a bit during "Deep Water," which has what sounds like a mandolin laying down the musical background. Given the band's sporadic output, this may be the last we hear from the band for a while, but it hardly matters. Third is an album meant for multiple listens.

Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend

First off, yes, I do this this album is overrated. It is not a pop revolution, nor is it the consensus masterpiece of the year. But I would be a fool to deny these Columbia grads the credit they deserve. Vampire Weekend is a diverse, intelligent indie work that represents styles from various decades and cultures alike. "Mansard Roof" sounds strongly like the Kinks, while "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" contains a number of distinctive Africanisms in the vocal twists and guitar. And of course, the band can't get away from its Ivy League roots, as it discusses a topic of heated debate in "Oxford Comma." Although it remains to be seen if the band, which already has solid musical roots, can reinvent itself, this album will undeniably go down as one of the most creative albums of 2008.

Visiter - the Dodos

The Dodos have a unique style of urban folk that has never quite been seen before, and their Visiter is a testament to the power of their style. Alex Davis said it best - from the freewheelin' "Red & Purple" to the epic "Fools," their songs are dominated by immaculate melodies and very untraditional drumming for folk music. This may have been the first album I loved this year, but I do not doubt that it will remain a favorite for me.
Read my review here: http://www.dailycal.org/article/101075

Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends - Coldplay

Definitely the biggest surprise of this year for me; I thought not even Brian Eno could save Coldplay from radio-friendly mediocrity (i.e. X&Y). Yet Eno and Chris Martin proved me wrong by creating Coldplay's most spectacular album to date. Yeah, it has the typical great Coldplay single - "Viva la Vida" in this case - but this album is so much more than that. From the vivid ambient track "Life in Technicolor" to the fierce "Lost!", Viva la Vida rarely fails to impress and often impacts you like few albums this year.

I should also mention Cut Copy's In Ghost Colours, which I enjoy immensely but did not quite make the list. However, I should also note that none of these items is definite; things change over time, and I may find a gem I had not earlier discovered or change my mind about other albums I was considering (e.g. In Ghost Colours). And remember, this list is by no means exhaustive, so explore beyond it to find your own favorites. In the meantime, enjoy these works.

EDIT: I should have really mentioned Bon Iver in the top ten, but it had been so long since I listened to For Emma, Forever Ago that I forgot it at the moment I was writing this list. Definitely one of the best of this year so far.

The Dodos

The Dodos released a new record in March that is absolutely epic. The album is named Visiter but is by far more of a regular in my playlist. The album features the most fabulous drumming, gorgeous guitar, and spectacular lyrics this year. It is safe to say that it is currently the best album of the spring and will most definitely be a contender for best of the year. Visiter starts off with the short but extremely sweet Walking. It is a perfect opener to introduce you to the awesome style of The Dodos and most especially Visiter. Walking shows you the Dodos' guitar style and leads us into their grandiose rhythms on Red & Purple. After we are properly introduced we have a short transfer and then comes Fools. Fools is the star of the album and is the perfect example of their soothing freak folk. My favourite track is by far Winter which comes 6th. Winter has classic, undying words intertwining with high chords, semi-tribal drumming, and brass. The rest of the track remain a surprise but they are all amazing right up to the beautiful ender, God? Buy Visiter now. Apparently so, as demonstrated by this YouTube video released by the Creaky Boards, a Brooklyn-based band who claims that Coldplay stole the melody from one of their songs. The ever-popular band apparently saw Chris Martin at one of their shows, so he evidently must have heard it there and loved it so much that he made another song out of it! And we all know that Chris Martin sure does love his obscure NYC generic indie music. Music is intellectual property, but I highly doubt that Chris Martin was at that show or stole the melody. Plus, the "original" song is pretty mediocre, so this publicity stunt won't help the Creaky Boards much.

Here's the YouTube video.

Album Review: My Morning Jacket

I had high hopes for My Morning Jacket's Evil Urges, as this year has seen few great musical releases. No, not about how gorgeous she is, because if we were talking about that, this would be a very positive blog post. Let's instead talk about her debut album, Anywhere I Lay My Head, in which every single song, except for "Song for Jo," is a Tom Waits cover. The problem with this album is that the strength of Tom Waits was his subtlety. This album takes Waits' songs and makes them almost too musically literal. "I Wish I Was in New Orleans" exemplifies this well. In Waits' version, strings and sax mingle with the piano tapping. The bright, scratchy tinkling of Johansson's version and her rather ineffective vocals do not compare to the strength of the original version. Then there's "Who Are You," which takes of Montreal-style indie rock and tries to make it into a Tom Waits song. If you heard it without ever hearing the original, you would think it sounds okay. But when you compare it to the original, you see that not much has changed except that the raw emotion of Waits' voice has been replaced by a contrast of high-low vocals and cheap electro-sounds. It's like she processed Waits' classic cuts for an audience not prepared to challenge themselves a bit to appreciate Tom Waits' music. Which is completely wrong, because we hepcats are far brighter than that.

And if you think I just dislike the album because I'm comparing it to Tom Waits' version, you have missed something. I have nothing against covers, but I do have something against covers that do not provide a different perspective than the original. Johansson's versions just repeat Waits' auras in a different setting: a cheap indie one with no creativity. The overarching direction of the songs remains the same. Perhaps if Johansson had a stronger voice or put more thought into instrumentation, this album could have been a success. So I'll just leave you with Johansson's version of "Anywhere I Lay My Head." You know where I stand on it, but you may like the Johansson-lite version just as well as the original.

One Track Mind: Throw Me the Statue

Throw Me the Statue's new album Moonbeams not only has a topless girl on it but is also full of catchy and fun indie pop tracks. Throw Me the Statue's songs just beg to be danced to and one can't help but shimmy like Feist to the quick catchy drums, xylophones, and simple guitar. The genius of Throw Me the Statue goes under the name of Scott Reitherman who currently abides in Seattle. He creates this myriad of sounds and writes very honest lyrics to go along with them. My personal favourite off of Moonbeams is called Lolita. While at first I thought it could possibly be about Nabokov, it ended up just being a fabulous indie ballad. Give a listen to Lolita, you will not be disappointed and you might even want to buy the whole album.
Check out Throw Me the Statue on MySpace

A Brian Eno cover? By Sugar Ray?!

YouTube teaches you something new everyday. And yesterday it taught me something that I would never have guessed. You see, Brian Eno and John Cale once recorded a song called "Spinning Away" for their 1990 album Wrong Way Up. For some reason, I looked up "Spinning Away" on YouTube and came up with a very different version...by Sugar Ray. Hey, I've never been a fan of covers that don't give the song a new identity, but you may see it differently. Here are two videos featuring each of the respective versions. Listen to them and decide for yourself. (The second one actually has a video with it! And what's better than watching a Japanese train ride in the winter?) And I refuse to tell you which is which in order to not sway your opinion...although it's not very hard to guess.

Video: New Piticlip from La Blogotheque

Those frenchies over at La Blogotheque are consistently hep. Relatively recently they have been making low-budget animation videos they dub Piticlips to go along with some funk songs. There are four so far with songs from Panda Bear, The Most Serene Republic, Tap Tap, and most recently Gui Boratto. I am not sure where I originally got my Gui Boratto track of Beautiful Life but it is has become an electro/dance mix staple. The album is titled Verbs and the track that has been released called RR vs. D is epic. The 7" comes out in 6 days and I am going to try and get my paws on a copy, but the full album is not due until June 24th. Try and catch the Au show in either SLO or Davis but there are many opportunities for us west coasters to catch 'em. I hopefully will be at the San Luis show, but until then, have a listen to RR vs. D and if you don't pee your pants something is wrong. They did reveal their first song from it though, and it seems like Brian Eno has done the band some good by producing this album. It's hard to judge the quality of the album from "Violet Hill" alone. Either this album will be Coldplay's best yet or will fail gloriously, which admittedly would still be more interesting than X&Y. Coldplay will be playing in Sacramento on July 21 and San Jose on July 24.

Listen to "Violet Hill".

Go Speed Racer, Go!

Thursday night was an evening of speeding tickets, possible seizures, and Speed Racer! Speed Racer, the anime super driver, was by far one of my favourite cartoons of all time. I watched reruns of the original series from the 70's and then when Speed Racer X started up in 1996-97 I became a die-hard fan. But it has been a long time without Speed Racer, so once the premier night came around I had my tickets to Imax. On the way to the Imax my buddy got himself a speeding ticket, the perfect opening act to the speed fueled film. And speed fueled it is, Speed Racer is one of the most sensational films I have ever seen. It is sensational in that it does justice to the great cartoon and in that it is overloads your visual and auditory senses. It is high speed, razzle dazzle action at it's finest. While some may say that the dialogue is corny, I believe that it is just following the way the cartoon characters used to speak. All in all, I think the film is spectacular. It has everything that an anime inspired, race car driving, futuristic fast action wipeout prone, crazy film needs. With everything so bright, colorful, and loud one almost has a seizure from sensory overload. I did find myself shake a few times when an especially huge explosion of cars with more cars bursting out of the flames doing 800 km with a wild crowd and neon lights flooding the entire scene. Even if you are not a fan, you will appreciate the thrill that comes from watching this movie. Check out the Speed Racer website for trailers and other goodies. Or watch this kick ass one right here.

Evil Urges - My Morning Jacket

With about only a month to go until My Morning Jacket's Evil Urges, our excitement is building up. The list he makes to define hipsters is pretty classic. I think that it is a positive term, hence the name of this blog, but I think that being a hipster should not be the definition of your identity. It is just the music or fashion that you like, not you. But as for being a Hepcat, thats another thing all together.

Check out the article by Mr. Womack here

Carson Ellis: Mastermind of The Decemberists Cover Art + Colin Meloy's DJ Set on NPR

If you know The Decemberists, then you no doubt know that they always have perfect and beautiful cover art. It fits seamlessly with their music; original, nostalgic, and superb. Ever wonder who is responsible for The Decemberists' wonderful cover art? Carson Ellis is her name, and funky art is her game. Ellis has done the cover art for nearly all of The Decemberists' releases, including the cover to Castaways and Cutouts above. When I bought my first Decemberists album back in '04, the truth is I fell in love with the art before I did with the music. I scoured all the notes and credits to find what I was looking for, Cover Art By: Carson Ellis. I went on an internet journey to find out more about her, after being relatively unsuccessful I abandoned my search. Forward to 2006, The Decemberists' release the golden and epic Crane Wife. Again I loved the art, I love that album very dearly also, so with my fire rekindled I quested again for my maiden of subtle palettes and beautiful drawings. This time success. I stumbled upon not only a website full of art, but also (later on) a blog! Now I can get my Carson Ellis fix anytime. Check out her website as well as her blog. Be sure to find her watercolor called Bandit Queen in the Aug. 07 section of her blog and Tamil Tigers in the May 07 section, those are my favourite pieces.

Since I am on the topic of Decemberists' related material, Colin Meloy (Frontman of The Decemberists as well as Carson Ellis' longtime boyfriend!) recently did a guest DJ set on NPR. He lays down some really quality tracks including some from his recent solo release.

Listen to Colin Meloy on DJ duty on NPR All Songs Considered

NPR: All Songs Considered

<img src="http://media.publicbroadcasting.net/wyso/ondemand/featuredMedia/npr_asc_image_300.jpg" width-"150" height="150" align="left" hspace="15" vspace="5">National Public Radio is probably something you associate with dry political commentary, but if you haven't discovered the magnificent source that is NPR Music, you are missing out on some of the best free music you'll ever hear. But something about it made me want to dance, so when I heard that The Rosebuds were releasing a remix album of Night of the Furies called Sweet Beats, Troubled Sleep I was very stoked on it. One of the most beautiful things about the remix is that it is free for download on the Merge Records website. But, I have to say that one must listen to the original Night of the Furies versions before even thinking about getting the remixes. Once you do you will enjoys remixes by Bon Iver, Portastatic, and Roger O'Donnell (Of The Cure & Psychedelic Furs).
Download Night of the Furies from Merge Records ($8.99)

Download Sweet Beats, Troubled Sleep from Merge Records (free!)

Animal Collective's Water Curses EP

Animal Collective rocked the indie world with the release of the LP Strawberry Jam late in '07 and now they are back again with a new EP. The four track EP named Water Curses is very reminiscent of Strawberry Jam. It is the new accessible Collective. Before, Animal Collective was only for the freak folk fans and lovers of the uber-experimental, while now they seem to bridging the gap betwixt those previous fans and a new Strawberry Jam era fan. The Jam fans and freak fans alike will undoubtedly fall in love with these four beautiful tracks. The EP opens with Water Curses, which has that same catchy feel that both Peacebone and Fireworks possess, without so much loud. Water Curses is a song that I see being very hard to get out of my mind. It then transitions into the very smooth and quiet Street Flash which I think that Strawberry Jam was missing. When Cobwebs come around you get something very beautiful. Cobwebs is my favourite track on the EP. It ends with the very mellow Seal Eyeing which just leaves you wanting more Collective. All in all, the EP is like $4.oo bucks on iTunes so why not get it. I think that, if you have never really gotten into Animal Collective the EP is a perfect place to start. It will give you that taste that could spark into a deep love for Animal Collective's freaky music. Without getting too sentimental, Water Curses is released on Domino Records and check out Animal Collective on their MySpace.

Listen to Water Curses- Animal Collective

Nine Inch Nails and Ten Free Songs

After Radiohead shook the music industry to its core with their release of In Rainbows, Nine Inch Nails experimented with the concept of the digital release with Ghosts I-IV. Today, without a record label, they continued that trend by releasing their latest album, The Slip, free of charge on their website. Plus, Nails' mastermind Trent Reznor has furthered the idea of the online release by providing you, the music addict, with options: You can download it in high quality MP3 (seemingly 212-320kbps), M4A lossless, FLAC or-for super audiophiles-24/96 wave. Also, the album is DRM-free and licensed under Creative Commons, so feel free to remix it and sample it as much as you like. And when you're downloading the album, just know that somewhere in an office controlled by the RIAA, a man is frowning and nervously drumming his fingers on a desk.

Video: Santogold

You like hot black hipsters? These babies are hand-made in Iceland by a designer named Vik Prjonsdottir. I think the beard cap is the most far out, hip to the jive piece of knitwear on the market. The beards come in three different colours and two lengths of long or short. The price is pretty steep ($135) but you are getting to own a only-one-in-town piece of clothing that was handmade in the lovely land of Iceland. I am personally thinking of putting out the cash to get myself one before I move to Washington at the end of the summer. I think the beard cap is quite possibly the most functional article of clothing I have yet to lay eyes upon. Also, chicks dig dudes with yellow mustaches, so get some! They are currently distributed in the U.S. by Scandinavian Grace.

Overheard in New York

Funny stuff overheard in New York.
