Presenters sought for 2012 Motions That Minister Mime & Praise Dance Conference

Vallejo, Calif. --- The Motions That Minister Mime & Praise Dance Conference is seeking sacred-arts ministries interested in sharing their gifts at its 2012 gathering (march 23 and 24, 2012) in Vallejo, Calif.

The event will be held at Emmanuel Temple Apostolic Church, 900 6th St., in Vallejo, Calif. Conference hosts are Pastor Bryan and First Lady Kelly Harris.

Motions That Minister is looking for groups and solo dance and mimes to minister on the program, either on Friday, March 23, 2012, or Saturday, March 24, 2012, co-host Kelly Harris writes in an email.

A guest presenter is Evangelist Krista Tyson of Youngstown, Ohio.

Dance It Out Ministries hosting 2012 conference in mid-March

LOUISVILLE, Ky. --- This year, Louisville, Ky.'s Dance It Out Ministries hosts its " 'Intimate' Expressive Worship Encounter" at Friday and Saturday, March 16 and 17, 2012.

The event runs 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 16, and 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at the Good Shepherd Worship Center in Louisville.

Registration is $10 for both days.

     The Friday Evening of Worship and Saturday Evening Concert are free and open to the public.

Jean Mabry, a worship-arts leader who encourages worship dance among all ages and specializes in dance silks, is one of the scheduled guest presenters at this year's Jubilate Worship Dance Conference in North Carolina.

The conference runs March 9 and 10, 2012, in Cary, N.C.

Registration is $65 before March 20, 2012.

Michigan studio offers free African dance classes in February 2012

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. --- In celebration of Black History Month, the AGW Conservatory of the Arts, LLC, is offering free African dance classes on Tuesdays in February 2012.
     The classes will be held at the studio on Van Buren Street near downtown Battle Creek. Sessions will run from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays.

How great to belong to a community that gives its residents the gift of dance --- which is what the Alabama Dance Council did today (Jan. 21, 2012), as a new addition to its Alabama Dance Festival line-up. This day's offerings included free dance classes in a range of styles.
This year's Dance Festival runs through Jan. 31, 2012, with performances by the Brazz Dance Theatre of Miama, Fla. (Catch the Brazz Dance Theatre dancers in workshops on Jan. 26, 27, 28 and 29, 2012, also.)

Support Water Missions 'Water Sunday' this March . . . save a life!

Hey, is your ministry or church supporting Water Sunday during March 2012?

Water Sunday is an event organized to call attention to the fact that one child dies every 20 seconds from a lack of clean, drinkable water. The host, the Christian engineering relief and development ministry Water Missions International, estimates that more than a million children die each day from lack of safe drinking water.

"Approximately 884 million people around the world lack access to safe water," according to Water Missions International's website. "Waterborne illnesses result in the deaths of nearly 1.5 million children every year. This is the equivalent of 20 jumbo jets crashing every single day. . . ."

Water Missions International is hoping to interest at least 50 churches in raising at least $5,000 each, which would help implement clean water in at least 50 needy communities. According to Water Missions International's estimates, each $10 raised provides clean drinking water to at least one person.

Karar Pazaz dance ministry hosts "Dancing In The Throne Room" ministry workshops

PETERSBURG,Va. --- The Karar Pazaz Liturgical Dance Ministry is hosting two ministry workshops --- "Dancing In The Throne Room" --- to help dance and other arts ministers minister more effectively.

The dates are Jan.14 2012, and March 10, 2012, at Zion Apostolic Church, 1601 S. Youngs Road, in Petersburg, Va.

The cost is $25 per session.

Participants will learn ballet, lyrical and modern dance techniques. The event is co-hosted by Elder Toni Young, of Karar Pazaz Liturgical Dance Ministry, and Min. Ruby Timberlake of Simply Grace Dance Studio.

HOUSTON, Texas ~ Houston's Hallel Jehovah Dance Ministry is hosting the "Prepare Ye the Way - Heaven Is Moving In" praise dance conference in that city from Feb. 23 to 26, 2012.

Today, my youth church class had lots of fun transforming scrapbook sheets and cardstock into 'thank-you' cards for those we love.

Carrying through on that project, I'd like to create a 'virtual' thank-you card to send to all the men who worship God in dance, to those who join their female counterparts in making plain the message of the gospel. . . . and to those waiting to be 'birth' for just the right moments to share those messages!

That being said, I thank God for those male dance- and flag ministers like Freddie Moore, founder of Freddie Moore Ministries and Footprints Dance company; Randall Flinn, founder and artistic director of the Ad Deum Dance company in Houston, Texas; Joe Brown, of Worship Him Ministries, Inc., who ministers with flags; and my little pre-teen friend who just looks at me with wide-eyed incredulity when I tell him 'real men do dance for God!

Top strategies for equipping teen girls (and boys!) to say 'no' to sex

The October 2011 issue of Essence magazine carries a truly heart-felt, interesting yet saddening article on the pressures that African American teens --- especially young girls --- encounter to have sex across this country.
     In the article, "Our Teens' Secret Sex Lives," a 14-year-old girl is quoted as saying: "I wish instead of telling me not to have sex my mother would tell me exactly how to say no."
     I'm not her mother, but for every teen-age girl who wants to hear or read strategies to keep her keeping on, here are some:
          1). "Don't cast your pearls before swine!"   (Matthew 7:6)
                You don't have to be a Christian to understand this scripture. Start telling yourself now that You are a pearl and that you have the pearl. Learn this scripture and keep reciting it when you're in a challenging situation. I don't quote "Wictionary," but it so clearly translates what that scripture means: "To give things of value to those who will not understand or appreciate it." Keep the pearls safe and guarded!
          2). Just smile, shake your head and let your mouth actually say 'no' and keep walking.
     3). Make sure you are not alone with a young man (or girl). No slipping off to the movies or mall or some other isolated, secluded place (especially without your parents' permission or acknowledgement).
     4). Prepare to be called every dirty name in the book (for saying and meaning 'no') --- we're speaking from experience here --- but still walk away . . . and keep on walking.
     5). If the person makes you feel uncomfortable or threatens you, tell an adult (parent, older sibling, school teacher, youth minister, etc.) whom you do trust. . . And keep telling until you feel safe or until you feel safe again.
     6). Imagine how DIRTY and USED you will feel when you do whatever that person is stressing you out to do . . . and then they don't call the next day or make you feel like you have to jump through new and higher hoops. Trust me, that feeling will not just be in your head . . . it will be for real!
     7). Always strive to look your best, but tone down the tight, revealing dress --- skinnies and leggings --- low-cut blouses and tops and other provocative dress that brings attention you might not always be equipped to handle.
     8). Don't be impressed that an 'older guy' (or 'girl') is interested in you: You might be a 'playa' and able to handle yourself, but believe that that person's intents might not be the best (especially if they know or learn later that you're 18 or younger).
     9). Limit (and eventually curtail) the late-night texting and telephone talk (in our book, anything after 8:30 and 9 p.m. veers into talk of a sexual and provocative nature).
     10). Tell the young man (or woman) that he or she must first meet your mother, father, pastor, youth director, older brother or sister, or aunt or other responsible adult before you will even entertain talking to them.

At Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Pastor Addis Moore is teaching believers to craft and speak "faith statements" --- affirmations about current and future situations, based on what the Word of God says.

Held up as an example of that done so well were the statements delivered by this 5-year-old boy from the Potter's House (pastored by Bishop T.D. Jakes) declaring and decreeing prosperity, safety and fullness over his life and others'.

Teen dance, mime ministers interpret pastor's sermon on woman with issue of blood

CHICAGO, Ill. --- We'd heard of worship artists interpreting a pastor's sermon while it was being delivered, but it wasn't until this past weekend that we actually saw it in person.

The occasion was the pastor's sermon ("My Condition Is Not My Conclusion") on the woman with the issue of blood (from Luke 8:42-48), preached by the Rev. Otis Moss, III, senior pastor at Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, Ill.

About one-third of the way through the sermon, we realized that two young women were slowly making their way from behind the church's choir stand to the area in front of the Rev. Moss.

     They wore purple sheer fabric over their faces --- in honor of the church's focus that Sunday on the movie "The Color Purple" --- and had strips of red sheer taffeta wound about their bodies.
     For almost half an hour, they danced, mimed and otherwise interpreted the words that Rev. Moss delivered in his sermon.
     What a positive contribution to and illustration of that morning's message!

Minnesota church hosts 'Freedom To Dance' worship conference

Atlanta-based child-abuse group looking for mime artists

ATLANTA, Ga. --- An Atlanta, Ga.-based child-abuse and neglect organization is searching for a mime group to represent it in the outreach it does.

Don't Mime Me is a non-profit organization that raises awareness for child Abuse and Neglect.

Don't Mime Me Inc. is holding auditions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011. The auditions are scheduled for Providence Church, 2140 Salem Road, in Conyers, Ga.

Dancers of all styles --- mime, hip hop, ballet, breakdance, jazz, praise, and More -- are encouraged to pre-register to audition. All ages are invited.
