Artwork from an original poster for L’ACF by Geo Ham.

Widely regarded as one of the finest automotive artists of all time, Geo Ham (Georges Hamel) was born in France in 1900. He first got work published in 1923, and by the 1930's was established as the finest in his field, being commissioned to create the fantastic Art Deco posters for the Monaco Grand Prix, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and many others. He competed in the 1934 Le Mans race in a 2 liter Derby, and although fuel problems forced him to withdrawal, his experience helped him capture the excitement of motor racing in his paintings. He died in 1972.
Juan Manuel Fangio won over 46% of all his races, another unbeaten record.

Fangio's last win at the German Grand Prix of 1957, which gave him his 5th World title, is often regarded as the greatest drive in Formula One history.

This legend from Balcarce, Argentina passed away on July 17, 1995.

This fantastic pencil drawing was produced to mark the 100th anniversary of Juan Manuel Fangio's birth (24th June 2011). Cleverly produced to reflect the national racing colours and colours of the Argentinian flag and with reference to Fangio's Italian blood (the small red squares in each corner of the border).

1971 saw the arrival of the BRM P160. It won the Austrian and Italian Grand Prix in the hands of Siffert and Gethin respectively. Pedro Rodriguez drove the number 8 car seen here in the Dutch Grand Prix that year.

The race was wet, very wet and the track was treacherously wet and slippery. Ickx led from pole and as everyone else struggled Ickx and Rodriguez built up a big lead with Rodriguez moving ahead on the ninth lap.

Their duel would continue for most of the race but towards the end Ickx pulled away to win by nearly eight seconds. The two "wet-weather men" beat the rest of the field by more than one lap.

Pedro Rodriguez would die less than one month later at the Norisring Circuit in Germany in an Interserie sports car race at the wheel of a Ferrari 512M.

An etching is no ordinary print. It is a time consuming and skilled art. Very few motoring artists work in this medium, the examples here are by Peter Hearsey - well known to Goodwood goers as the artist behind all of the Festival of Speed posters since the first event.

To produce each etching, a metal (usually copper) plate is covered with a waxy ground which is acid-resistant. The artist then scratches off the ground with a pointed etching needle where he wants a line to appear in the finished piece, so exposing the bare metal. The plate is then dipped in a bath of acid, technically called the mordant (French for "biting") or etchant. The acid "bites" into the metal, where it is exposed, leaving behind lines in the plate. The remaining ground is then cleaned off the plate. The plate is inked all over, and then the ink wiped off the surface, leaving only the ink in the etched lines.
The plate is then put through a high-pressure printing press together with a sheet of paper and the paper picks up the ink from the etched lines, making a print.

As it is a hand process each inking and passing through the press will produce a slightly different print. So, within an edition each print will be unique. Eventually the plate wears so can no longer be used, or is scored through to preserve the edition.

It links the Austrian state of Salzburg with the state of Carinthia and is named after the Großglockner, Austria's highest mountain. The alpine pass is 1,953 metres (6,407 ft) at it's highest point.

To celebrate it's opening an 'International Automobile Race' was held, in the form of a mountain climb. The race was held twice more in 1938 and 1939.

"Onwards and Upwards" by John Ketchell

This painting by John Ketchell entitled "Onwards and Upwards" shows the Type D Auto Union of Hans Stuck tackling the 1939 race.

During practice in fine weather he set a course record (still standing today) of 8:59.6 mins, an average speed of 84.7kmh. Weather on the mountain is extremely changeable and race day was windy, wet and foggy. Visibility was poor. Hermann Lang still managed to charge up the mountain at an average speed of 75kmh to take 1st place, and the mountainclimb World Championship. Stuck finished a very close 2nd.

World War II was to break out soon after, and this event was never run again.

Why not commission a piece of motoring art?

We work with some of Europe's best motoring artists who spend much of their time working on commissions for clients...

Click for larger image

We also work with sculptors and scratch model builders too.

Commissioning an artwork is a very rewarding experience whether it be of your own motor car or favourite motoring scene... anything is possible...

AeroShell Alfa Romeo Poster from 1933

Sorry for the radio silence. July was a busy month, culminating with a successful Silverstone Classic; Thank you to all our customers who visited. We were closed for the first two weeks of August, now back to catch up and prepare for Goodwood Revival on 16-18th September...

What's new? Well quite a lot. We'll kick off with this great AEROSHELL poster from the earlier 1930's celebrating Alfa Romeo's Grand Prix victory at Picardie, France in 1933. No graphics, just wonderful period typesetting and of course the very recognisable AeroShell logo.

Held on 21 May 1933 this was the 9th running of the event. Phillippe Etancelin won from pole position by 3 minutes from Raymond Sommer (also Alfa Romeo) and Marcel Lehoux driving a Bugatti T51.

This original poster measuring 58.5 x 79.5 cm is in excellent condition and is linen mounted.

"Marmon Wasp" by John Ketchell

Held on May 30 1911 the first Indianapolis 500-Mile Race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway was a departure from the usual policy of holding a number of smaller racing meets during 1909 and 1910 racing seasons.

The single, large-scale event attracted widespread attention from both American and European racing teams and manufacturers.

Despite the controversy surrounding the result when second placed Ralph Mulford protested claiming he had lapped Harroun when the Marmon limped into the pits on a torn tire, it was by far and away the most sucessful event held to date. It quickly established itself both as the premier motorsports competition in the nation, and one of the most prestigious in the world.

Mulfords protest was denied and Harroun declared the winner. After the race, and collection of $10,000 for first place, Harroun returned to the position he had taken at the end of the 1910 racing season: retirement. He would never race again.

Targa Florio 1967 and the Ferrari 330 P4

#motoring #art #ferrari
Won by the Porsche 910/8 of Paul Hawkins and Rolf Stommelen, the early pace was set by the beautiful Ferrari 330P4 of local hero Nino Vaccarella and Ludovico Scarfiotti with Vaccarella setting a fastest practice lap of 37 minutes and 12 seconds.
Unfortunately Vaccarella was to crash out on the first race lap of the event...
