Dressing for New York Fashion Week

With New York Fashion Week only days away, we thought we'd share a few tips on dressing for the occasion...

Going to any fashion week means you have to be prepared to have your picture taken. With all those photographers around you snapping, there is bound to be some shots of you. Now, whether or not your outfit is singled out for a photo op (let alone chosen as fashion week content,) you have to be ready. Looking the part is challenging especially in a sea of fashion enthusiasts, bloggers, celebs, designers, models, etc.

Rule No. 1

Most important, stay true to your style. It's easy to get caught up in all the excitement and want to compete with those who have a completely different way of dressing. NYFW is not the time to hold back but it's also not the time to wear something you're uncomfortable in.

Don't go experimenting with loud prints and bright colors if this is not your usual aesthetic; it will show right through. If your look is more laid back, amp it up with some trendy pieces and luxe accessories. This is an easy way to get spotted. For example, switch your dark wash skinny jeans out for some light wash frayed denim and pair it with your beloved Chanel purse.

Rule No. 2

Plan ahead and make sure that you have items to suit 'all' weather conditions. Take advantage of the warm weather and show off that new dress you haven't worn yet but also, bring an umbrella. NB: Having a few jacket options and at least 3 pairs of pants never hurt.

Rule No.3

It's also important to keep in mind that running from show to show all day with barely any breaks is not going to be very conducive if you exclusively wear heels. Pack a super comfy (and on trend!) pair of (faux) fur lined loafers instead. Lastly, always have band-aids on hand.Your feet will thank me.

In my opinion, these are the three cardinal rules when it comes to dressing for NYFW. To all the fashionistas in attendance this year, enjoy the shows and please, be yourselves.

Summer Trends Here to Stay for Fall: The Statement Maker

Continuing on with trends that made their mark in Summer '17 and promise to be a hit during the fall season as well...

The Statement Maker

The statement maker trend refers to designs that make their message loud and clear. See the "We Should All Be Feminists" tee at Dior and Stella McCartney's animal rights advocation; “Girls Thanks, and No Fur, No Leather,” last season. Following the trend up for the fall season, Creatures of Comfort remind us that "We Are All Human Beings," a written statement reminiscent of Drake's scrawl for the "If You're Reading This It's Too Late" mixtape cover art. Then at Prabal Gurung slogan tees like, "Our Minds, Our Bodies, Our Power," were no doubt referencing the current political climate in the US.

Political Agenda

The message wasn't always political though, it could have been a simple standout graphic inspired by internet culture or one that was manipulated to riff on the official fake trend. The point is to make a bold choice whether it's a protest tee or just a loud graphic, the stand out factor has to be there.

Go Big or Go Home

Floral is one of those trends that is pretty safe to wear year-round. We saw it everywhere this summer and according to the runway, Fall 2017 is no exception! Look for "couch" florals this fall. Coming off the season of dainty florals, this print continues into fall without skipping a beat.

Here are some tips for keeping floral as your fall favorite:

Silhouette

With cooler temperatures come more coverage, layering, and heavier fabrics. This makes for the ultimate juxtaposition when adding something lighter and softer like floral. Work the floral print into items like blazers, blouses, and trousers. You can still rock floral dresses but opt for ones that are longer and have a little more structure because yes, that cute flouncy babydoll floral dress is too summery.

Colour

Colour is one of the most important considerations to make when choosing fall florals. Bright colored florals are great for summer but fall vibes will come from richer shades of floral. Think forest green, burnt orange, and deep burgundy. Florals also took on a darker mood for fall, with black or dark blue backgrounds covered in the print.

Accessories

Accessories are a great way to make those summer florals stretch into the next season, especially for dresses. Tights can be your best friend in the situation that you want to wear a floral mini, just be mindful of how opaque they are and the color. You don't want to mix a summer dress with thick black tights. Also because layering is key for fall, you can throw a cardigan over top or pair it with a denim or motorcycle jacket to warm things up.

Florals will continue to bloom into fall so make your updates for the cooler weather by sticking with fall silhouettes, colors, and accessories.

The Perfect Shoes for the Perfect Dress

So, you've found the perfect dress for an upcoming event. Only now you don't know which shoes will go with it. I know this struggle all too well. Next time you find yourself in this position, consider these few things:

Style

The style of shoe that you choose must account for the time of season and weather. There's nothing worse than seeing someone trying to rock a heeled over the knee boot in mid-summer (I've seen it!) Conversely, winter weather is not the most suitable for peep toe shoes. The more formal occasion doesn't necessarily always call for a higher heel although it may be easier to get away with.

Color

The color of your dress and accessories is pretty central to choosing the right shoe for your dress. If your dress is a solid color, you have a lot of leeway in the shoe department! Embellished, bejeweled, strapped, printed, pom-pomed, you name it. If the reverse is true and your dress is more of the statement maker, maybe it's multi-colored or animal print, your best bet is a solid colored shoe. The reason being that if both items are too 'loud' they can easily clash. Choose a color that accents one of the colors already in your dress. It's also important to consider the color of your other accessories, try matching them to your shoe color or to a different color in the dress that you want to play up.

Height

The height of your shoe is something to think about if you want to create the illusion that you're shorter or taller. For example, if your date towers over you, you can afford to wear a taller heel. If they're on the shorter side, you may feel more comfortable in a pair of fancy flats or kitten heels.

Comfort

Comfort is one of those checklist items that blend into all the others. But the number one rule to remember here is that if you have difficulty walking in heels, don't expect that slipping a pair on just a few minutes before you're supposed to wear them is a good idea. Break them in after you buy them! The night of is for bringing band-aids, a small amount of vaseline, and a pair of jelly flats, if you want to be ultra prepared.

How to Accessorize your Little Black Dress

The little black dress is a staple in every woman's wardrobe. By learning to accessorize your LBD properly you can make it look brand new every time you wear it.

As a reference point, I'm going to show you a few ways to do this using the Historic New York Mediterranean Sea Dress:

1. Add a statement necklace

Refreshing your LBD could be as simple as adding an eye-catching necklace. Shorter necklaces will keep the focus on your face whereas longer necklaces will draw more attention to the silhouette of the dress. Layering necklaces are great if you want to add texture and drama. For something that will stand out, go with bolder colors and/or chunky stones.

2. Add some earrings.

For a black dress, I think hoop earrings look incredible, especially silver. Otherwise, opt for something fun like a colorful pom pom or bonbon earring. Even tassel earrings are a great choice! The longer the earrings the more eyes on your LBD, if you're going for earrings with gems make sure they're on the smaller side so your ears aren't weighed down.

3. Belt it.

The option of a belt is great for any LBD because it accentuates the waist even more. For this particular little black dress, I would suggest a thinner belt in black or even metallic. Other dresses may call a thicker belt, maybe even a trendy corset belt. The key is to emphasize those curves so pay attention to where the smallest part of your waist is and belt it there!

4. Put on a pair of tights.

Wearing tights with your LBD won't just update it but it'll keep you warm in those cooler temperatures. If you want to keep things simple, go for blacks tights with some lace detail to make things pop a little. If you want to experiment with patterns or colors, your best bet is to stick with darker colors (think navy blue or a deep purple) and smaller prints. Remember, you still want the look to be cohesive.

Of course, we're sad to see summer go but we're also ready to embrace the upcoming change of season, and what it means to our wardrobe.

While packing up your sundress collection don't be sad because it's almost over but happy because well, it's still technically summer. Take advantage of August. Go on that last trip to the cottage, get a few long runs in, have an extra glass of wine, and most importantly, look for those great end of the summer deals.

In keeping with exploring the beauty of the past, Historic New York is all for commemorating fashion icons throughout history. We're also interested in seeing how their looks inspired today's fashion and what they might wear if they were here today. Of course, when you think of any female fashion icon, the name Audrey Hepburn is bound to come up.

Audrey Hepburn was a British actress and model during the early 50's to late 60's. During this time she made an indelible mark in fashion history with her classic style dressing. She had this way of making simple staple pieces feminine yet classy. When you think of Audrey Hepburn, you think of clothing that is absolutely tailor-made. You think of a little black dress and you think of a simple color palette. She was less about being flashy in making a fashion statement and more about an understated glamor.

Her look was chic, elegant, and effortless. Her style remains coveted today because it is timeless. The star's most iconic role was in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Her ensemble for the movie; a little black dress, was also made famous. To get the look, we recommend trying our Mediterranean Sea Dress from the "Lefkada" collection. Your clothing is important to you, which means learning how to properly care for your clothing is equally important. With that, here are our Top Five Tips for Dress Care.

1. Always read the tag for washing instructions.

You know that little annoying tag on your shirt? It actually contains the instructions to keep your clothes in great shape. Hand wash in cold and lay flat to dry could mean the difference between a garment that fits and one that is too tight. Remember: pieces that require 'special care' usually mean a trip to the dry cleaners.

2. Wash your darks inside out.

This will keep the color from fading fast because there is less friction between other garments.There's nothing worse than when your little black dress becomes your little charcoal gray dress.

3. Wash your clothes less.

If your clothes are dirty, wash them, of course. But what about for that one isolated speck of dirt, are you literally going to put your clothing through the ringer to get it out? Try spot washing for marks like this, especially if you've just laundered that garment already. By extending your washing to at least every other wear, you will preserve the color and shape of your clothing.

4. Hang them out to dry.

Your clothing that is. Not only will it save you money but air-drying is a good method if you want your clothes to stay the same fit. Drying clothes unnecessarily or against washing instructions is a quick way to shrink them.

The last tip is one that is more proactive. Quality is one of the main differences between fast fashion and designer fashion. Arguably, one of the most flattering dresses for any body type is the bodycon dress. There is no room to be told that just because you don't have a flat stomach, for example, that you can't wear this. It's not a body self-conscious dress it's a body conscious dress. This simply means something that is tailored to suit your curves. So, don't feel left out because there are options available for everyone.

Bodycon is all about celebrating your curves, so play up your best features. Let's say that you want to play up your muscular, toned arms. Choose a sleeveless or even strapless dress. Or maybe it's your legs you want to show off, opt for something with a shorter cut like a minidress.

Colour is another thing you'll want to consider. If you're tentative about rocking a bodycon, go for one in a darker color. Black, in particular, we know, is slimming. If you want to skim over certain 'problem' areas, switch the white colored dress in for navy blue or black. Fabric choice is also something you can do to combat those 'problem' areas. Recently, I discovered that I am a mesomorph. "What's a mesomorph?" you ask. It's one of the three main body types. The other two are ectomorph and endomorph. Now, why is it important in dressing? Well, it doesn't have to be, you can dress regardless of your body type and wear what you want. But learning to dress for your body type or learning what looks most flattering on you is invaluable information. What I'm going to do is give you some top tips for dressing for each body type as well as a few outfit suggestions all courtesy of Historic New York!

Mesomorph

Wide shoulders and a smaller waist call for tops or dresses that cinch in the waist without adding bulk to the shoulders or chest. Cropped tees and wrap tops are great for this! Look for clothing made from stretchy fabrics to show off your curves; baggy clothes will only weigh you down.

Why: It's fitted throughout, the elastic band at the waist cinches you in, and the neckline isn't too high or wide.

Ectomorph

The sun is out and the beaches warm enough to relax on - summertime is prime vacation time and it is a great season for fashionistas. Before going to your summer vacation destination, you may try on all of your old summer clothes, go on a shopping spree for new outfits, and stock up on the cutest accessories to don on the beach. When you get home to pack, the big question at hand is, “How am I going to fit all of this in one bag?!” Packing a bag for vacation without over packing and getting stuck with a bunch of checked bag fees is a true artform. Follow these tips to pack the most with less.

Don’t overpack

Taking your entire wardrobe would be amazing, except for the fact that you’d have a hard time deciding between all of the choices. There’s also the fees associated with overweight bags. So how do you not overpack? You need to curate the clothes that you pack. Start by putting everything that you want to take all on one surface, like your bed. Next, create a “Yes” and “No” pile. The yes section will go with you, and the no pile will remain at home for you to wear another day.

Plan your outfits

Once you’ve curated the clothes and items that you will be packing for your vacation, you can go a step further by planning your outfits. Think of all of the events you will attend and attractions that you will visit, and plan accordingly. Also plan the number of possible outfits based on how many days you will be gone, the types of events that you will attend, the weather forecast, and whether you will be able to wash your clothes or not. For example, let’s say you are going to the beach a few times, to an opera, out to eat, and exploring the city. You’ll want to pack swimsuits, a nice dress and shoes, a few pairs of shorts, and a few tank tops/summer shirts. You could pack one outfit for every planned event, or you could take tips from the next point:

Pack pieces that you can reuse in different outfits! The shoes that you wear to the opera could also be worn to a happy hour at a famous local restaurant. By packing pieces that you can wear more than once, you automatically cut down on the number of items that you take on your trip. With the fist day of summer fast-approaching, why not review even more of my top warm weather dresses? This time, from the Orthodox collection!

The word "orthodox" refers to something that is normal or usual. Now, don't let this mislead you when shopping the collection because it is anything but ordinary.

My absolute favorite piece from this collection is the La Rose Leaf Dress. This dress is hard not to fall in love with; not only because my middle name is Rose and I'm partial to the graphic, but because of it's design!

The dress features three black embroidered roses; one large one on the right side of the chest and two smaller ones at the bottom on both sides. Combine this with green piping around the neckline, hem and sleeves, and it gives you the most beautiful garden-like detail. It's amazing what a pop of color can do! All of this is contrast with the white color of the dress made from nylon and viscose. This blend of fabrics produce a nice, fitted shape while remaining comfortable and breathable.

A close second for me is the Intricate Floral Dress. What is so eye-catching about this dress are the colors; it comes in green with black and blue with orange. You can't go wrong with either (or both!) choices because the color combinations are out of this world. The jacquard pattern and embroidery featured on the dress is only highlighted by the color pairings. Perfect for a barbecue, date night, or casual Friday at the office, this piece is an absolute staple for Spring/Summer 2017!

Since we've covered some of my faves from the Lefkada collection. I figured this week I would rave about my top two picks from Historic New York's Spring/Summer 2017 Lalibela collection.

Both the Epipaleolithic Dress and the Mesolithic Dress from this bohemian inspired collection feature hand crochet detailing. Think less so the scarf grandma knitted you for your birthday and more high fashion. Both pieces are convertible and come with a detachable slip underneath. And just like that, you can wear it as the cutest beach cover up.

Colour blocking is used to break up the knit detail; the Epipaleolithic Dress in particular reminds me of the famous work of artist Piet Mondrian. The perfect twist on a summer classic if you ask me!
