New research refutes claim that mummified head belonged to King Henry IV of France

New research led by KU Leuven professor Jean-Jacques Cassiman exposes erroneous conclusions in forensic studies by Spanish and French researchers. They incorrectly ascribed a mummified head to Henry IV and a bloody handkerchief to Louis XVI.

Two purportedly royal relics recently surfaced on the collectors' market in France: a mummified head and a handkerchief with blood residues. The head was said to be that of French king Henry IV and the blood on the handkerchief that of King Louis XVI. This was confirmed by Spanish and French researchers, who reported positive DNA matches. Several historians voiced doubts about these claims and enrolled the help of forensic identification specialist Professor Jean-Jacques Cassiman and his team to investigate the relics.

Professor Cassiman's team compared the published DNA results from the head and the blood in the handkerchief with DNA samples obtained from three surviving descendants of the house of Bourbon, progeny of Henry IV (see Figure 1). The genetic relationship between these three Bourbons, who come from different branches of the family line, is fixed on the basis of research carried out on the Y-chromosome. The DNA comparison found that there was no relationship between the Bourbons and the blood on the handkerchief, nor the mummified head. Two breaks in the biological line on the paternal side would have had to occur in order for the head and the blood to belong to the two French kings.

Likewise, there was no evidence on the maternal side (based on the mitochondrial DNA testing) suggesting a positive identification of the relics. The mother of Henry IV, Jeanne III d'Albret, is related via Anna of Habsburg in an unbroken maternal line to the Habsburgs, including Marie-Antoinette and Louis XVII (see Figure 2). Here, once again, there would have to have been at least one break in the maternal line for the head to belong to King Henry IV. The probability that one of the women in King Henry IV lineage was not the real mother of her daughter, or of the king himself, is virtually non-existent.

Furthermore, DNA tests of the blood on the handkerchief show with 84.2% certainty that the blood belonged to a person who did not have blue eyes. It is known that King Louis XVI had blue eyes.

Based on these conclusions, the team of Professor Cassiman is unable to confirm the conclusions of their Spanish and French counterparts, given the available data. The blood on the handkerchief almost certainly does not belong to Louis XVI. Too little DNA remains were found on the mummified head to confirm or deny that it is the head of Henry IV, although historical data makes this identification unlikely.

According to the researchers, the study shows that a reliable genetic identification of historical remains requires a DNA profile of the living paternal and maternal descendants of the 'donor' to which the remains purportedly belong.

The larger NEOs (those with a maximum physical dimension of more than a meter) are generally referred to as either asteroids or comets, while smaller objects are referred to as meteoroids. Large or small, they are all called meteors upon fiery transit of Earth's atmosphere. When pieces of a meteor survive transit through the atmosphere to strike the surface of the Earth, they are called meteorites. (Only the largest asteroids — those few with diameters in the range of hundreds of kilometers — are spherical. Smaller ones are of irregular shape.) Every day, a continual influx of these objects strikes Earth's atmosphere. Most of them are dust-sized particles, but they add up; it's been estimated that on a typical day, these particles total from 50 to 150 tons of matter. Asteroids of the order of a few meters in size strike the atmosphere roughly annually. Damage on Earth's surface is likely only when the kinetic energy of the object - the energy it carries by virtue of its mass and velocity when it enters the atmosphere - is in the range of a few hundred kilotons of TNT equivalent or above. (By comparison, the Hiroshima atomic bomb was roughly 13 kilotons of TNT equivalent.) Asteroids with this much energy are thought to strike the Earth only every 100 years or so. The more frequent, less energetic ones generally deposit that energy high enough in the atmosphere that no effects are felt at Earth's surface. The 1908 explosion over Tunguska in Siberia, which leveled trees over an area of more than 2,200 square kilometers (850 square miles), is thought to have been caused by a stony asteroid.

From "Catfish & Cotton", Driving Down the Blue(s) Highway with 2 Blues Brothers from Belgium (Luc & Marc Borms)

Born on May 8, 1911 in Hazelhurst, MS, his name is Robert Spencer, after his stepfather. As a teenager, he took the name of his natural father. In 1930 he met blues musican Son House and was deeply affected by his style. After his colleagues Son House and Willie Brown were astounded by his development, rumors began about Johnson trading his soul to the devil in exchange for the guitar expertise. He recorded his famous songs in 1936 and 1937, in San Antonio and Dallas. In 1938 he played his last gig in a juke joint named Three Forks, and died August 16. Many rumors occured about Johnson's death: stabbing, poison... or the devil catching up with him.

In 2008, while doing research for a new book on the abbey of Orval (Belgium) - its mysteries, its lost treasures, and Nostradamus of course -, I made some pictures and movies of the ruins of the old abbey. I didn't use the material and forget about it; my friend Marc Borms (www.embee.be) had better stuff. I didn't even look or listen to the movies I made in 2008, and did this only recently, in October 2012, while cleaning up my camera.

Headphone on, I heard a faint voice, speaking French, which I didn't hear four years earlier. Was I listening to a French guide... or a monk, praying? Was there someone reading poetry? Then I recognised some words and sentences... as famous Nostradamus quatrains I had already written about, concerning a temple, a secret and a treasure, possibly situated in Orval. Could this be an example of the so-called "Electronic Voice Phenomenon" (EVP)... and the voice of Nostradamus, telling us where we should start a true treasure hunt?
Or was it simply a practical joke? A hoax?
You decide.

What Nostradamus told us:

Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette:
The night falls, and through the forest of Reims
they will come, in two parts to Orval, Herne and the white stone.
Now that the monk is in Varennes, black and grey,
the choice of Capet will be the cause of storm, fire, blood, axe.
The Templars:
The soldiers who were tempted not far from the city of Antibes,
were hidden beneath the food of ruminating animals
- their arms were making noises -
and they were led to a field of herbs.
The oak tree where he used to sit, near the "field of herbs", in the abbey of Orval:
Beneath the oak tree of Gienne, struck by lightning,
not far from there the treasure is hidden,
which for many centuries has been gathered.
When found, a man shall die, the eye pierced by a spring.
The Tomb of Bernard De Montgaillard, nearby the oak tree and the field of herbs:
When the inscription D.M. will be found,
in the ancient cave, revealed by a lamp,
Law, the King and Prince Ulpian shall be troubled.
Queen and Duke are in the pavilion under cover.
What Bernard asked his brothers: to bury him "in a way they will march over and ahead":
The divine word will be struck from the sky.
Who cannot proceed any further,
to the secret closed up with the revelation,
in a way they will march over and ahead?
Nostradamus talks about at least 2 treasures, and "Hesperian citizens" (in the Garden of the Hesperides is a tree where the golden and immortality-giving apples grow, guarded by a never-sleeping, hundred-head dragon)
When hungry bonds open the temple,
the treasure that was placed here by Hesperian citizens,
will be withdrawn therein, to a secret place,
as a retaken, ravished and horrible prey in their midst!
Beware! Here are Booby Traps!
He who will open the tomb that was found,
and doesn’t close it promptly:
Evil will come to him, and one can't prove,
if it should be better to be a Breton or Norman King.
The "one who is engraved in medals (coins?) of gold and silver"... Louis XVI?
In sacred temples scandals will be perpetrated,
they will be reckoned as honors and praised.
For one who is engraved in medals of gold and silver,
the end will come in very strange torments.
There were 8 quatrains on the EVP, but there are 9 quatrains in the Centuries of Nostradamus, featuring a temple, a treasure (or secret) and - very possibly - the abbey of Orval:
Eyes closed, and opened by an antique fantasy,
the garb of monks will be put to naught,
when the Great Monarch will chastise their frenzy
and ravishing of the temples with the treasure in front.

"It must have been May 1917. You were one of the many orphans the Great War made, in Louvain, Aarschot, Dinant. I don’t know what exactly happened with doctor Scharpeneel’s happy family. But suddenly his wife was dead, he was badly wounded and where was his little girl Isabelle?"

"Doctor Scharpeneel recovers from his injuries and goes looking for his daughter Isabelle. In Hotel Ocean in De Panne lives one of the orphans the Great War made. Belgian soldiers adopted the girl and gave her a name: Jeannette Elisabeth Shrapnel."

"They promised you that at least one of them would come back to be your father, they made a photo for a postcard… I had your photo in my pocket when I marched to the Hell Fire Corner."

"The year is 1936. There’s an article in the newspaper about the secret victims of the Great War, tucked away in the Franz Jozef Hospital, Vienna. What they have in Vienna, they may have in other places, too… And again I go searching for my secret playmate, my invisible friend, my Unknown Soldier."
