About a year ago a bunch of us from RIG went down to see Dave, Jon and the others who were inventing a company called Hiut.

We met them in their shed. We talked. We got excited. Then we went canoeing.

We headed home and started working on HistoryTag, pausing only to add Phil (who knows lots about building websites) and ditch Arthur (who mostly knows about Star Wars).

In the year since, all of the RIGgers have worked on HistoryTag in some way. Phil built the site. Tom built the app. Alex did the logo, lots of design and lots of management, Ben and James did a bit more design, Gary lent some business advice and Russell is writing this blogpost. In the process we accidentally invented the Boffins Of London, learnt quite a lot about manufacturing processes, thought a lot about long-lasting web services and realised that we’ve all written tons on the web about where things meet time meet networks. We’re going to be linking to those things A LOT. There’s a big heap of thinking under this hood.

For now though, we’re rather proud and nervous to introduce you to HistoryTag. It’s a simple way for people who make things, and people who love them, to keep and share the histories of those things. There’s more explanation on the site.

All the usual caveats apply - it’s ruggedly unfinished, we’re still working on Instagram integration, we don’t yet support Klingon - but we think it might be an interesting service.

We’re delighted that Hiut are our launch partners. We’ve been back and forth to the factory a bit, watching them putting a brilliant business together and it’s fantastic to see the jeans emerge into the world. Hiut jeans are a perfect HistoryTag product. But we hope that, over time, we’ll be supporting more and more products from more and more people and companies.

Watch this space. More news to come. In the meantime, Hello There.
