Sinden Announces New Label

XLR8R has the news on Graeme Sinden’s new label. Looking forward to those releases…

London’s jack-of-all-trades Sinden has announced the creation of a new label, dubbed Grizzly, with two releases already slated for April and May. Aiming to reflect his “all-embracing, twisted-up” style of club music and beat-making, the first release on the label will be a collaboration between Sinden himself and SBTRKT, with the sophomore slot taken by Brodinski.

Guru awakens from coma, makes statement to press

Sources are confirming that former Gang Starr rapper Guru has come out of the coma he slipped into after suffering a heart attack late last week. He underwent a surgical procedure on Tuesday.

In the brief statement, Guru confirmed that he is recovering, and that point man for inquiries on his health will be his current producer and partner Solar.

“I am doing fine and I am recovering! I’m weak though,” Guru said. “Solar is the only person who has the accurate info on my situation. Any info from anybody else is false! I appreciate your well wishes and all the love!”

Solar relayed the following: “Guru is resting and doing well after his surgery. The doctors say that he will fully recover from his illness. We thank everyone who send prayers our way and we appreciate the outpouring of love from around the world!”

The statement came as a shock to some, who felt it was a shot at long-time Gang Starr partner DJ Premier, who had been fielding questions and providing status updates on his old partner’s well-being.

Ferry Corsten unveils new album & concept tour with “Once Upon A Night”

Dutch dance music pioneer Ferry Corsten unveils his latest compilation and concept tour, Once Upon A Night, at this year’s Winter Music Conerence in Miami. the compilation is a double-disc set featuring 25 unreleased tracks, all of which have been produced by Ferry himself or his frequent collaborators exclusively for the compilation. The album is an amalgam of the best in house and trance, drawing influence from Corsten’s travels to the world’s most exotic destinations, and unchartered territories of sound.

On the new album Ferry says, “I am happy to be back with a compilation after quite some years. Because of the traveling and touring I get to see a lot of cultures. These impressions have had a great influence on compiling this double album. I personally think the mix is great fusion of house and trance combined in a two and half hour musical journey.”

To support the compilation, Ferry Corsten also unleashes the brand new tour concept: Once Upon A Night: The Experience. Designed as a 6 hour interactive journey in 3 parts (sunset, night and sunrise), the show highlights the varying moods of the compilation visualized by a never-before-seen living backdrop. Ferry will be accompanied by two major league DJ’s, who along with Ferry will lead the audience into the night. The interactive combination of sound and visuals will take the audience on a complete sensory experience with state-of-the-art production techniques – emulating sunset to sunrise; from dusk ‘til dawn; pre-party through after-party. Once Upon A Night: The Experience begins touring at this year’s Winter Music Conference on March 27, with a March 30th album release on Ultra Records.

Two mainstays on the Party Shuffle segment of the show go the mutual cover route in this XLR8R report…

Friendly Fires and Holy Ghost! first came up with the plan to cover each other’s tracks in Corsica last summer, but only after several months has the plan come to fruition. Holy Ghost! have their contemporary classic “Hold On” covered, while Friendly Fires’ “On Board” is given a nice re-work which includes some of the last drumming that the legendary Jerry Fuchs ever recorded. Available March 8 as a split single on XL and DFA, you can check out a preview of Holy Ghost! covering “On Board” after the jump!

An ice hockey player named Dmitry Fyodorov mysteriously disappeared after an accident on the ice 30 years ago. He was a successful attacker for CSKA Moscow.

Out of all the things that could have followed for Gaspadin Fyodorov (if indeed he is still alive, God bless), he would surely never have imagined that two punk kids in Sweden would use his name to release wonky minimal techno many decades later.

Rapper Guru falls into coma after suffering cardiac arrest

Many sources are reporting that Keith “Guru” Elam, one-half of legendary hip hop act Gang Starr, has fallen into a coma after suffering a heart attack. The initial news has reported by Elam’s sister.

Details are sketchy at present, and we’ll continue to update this blog entry as news trickles in. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Guru’s family and friends.

UPDATE: DJ Premier, Guru’s Gang Starr partner, confirmed the news in a phone call to Hip Hop Nation yesterday. “Guru is in a coma and will go under surgery tomorrow (Monday) afternoon.”
