Almost a month after it released the next generation of its productivity suite to manufacturing, Microsoft is launching Office 2010 worldwide. However, despite the fact that, as of today, May 12th, 2010, Office 2010 and additional products related to the suite have hit the global-availability milestone, only business customers are able to actually buy the successor of Office 2007. End users will need to wait at least another month, as Office 2010 will only hit retail availability in June 2010.

In addition to Office 2010, Microsoft is also offering businesses worldwide the RTM versions of SharePoint Server 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010. In fact, some customers have already been able to buy and download Office 2010 RTM from the software giant for quite some time, starting with MSDN and TechNet subscribers, which got access to the bits a few days after the productivity suite was wrapped up.

“As information work evolves in response to external trends and technological innovations, the tools for information work must evolve as well. Microsoft Office, as the primary vehicle by which people experience Business Productivity Infrastructure (BPI) capabilities, continues to expand to support the changing requirements of businesses and information workers around collaboration, mobility and secure access to business data, while providing value, simplicity and integration throughout the BPI stack,” Microsoft stated.

“Over the years, Microsoft Office has provided increasingly richer capabilities through integration with back-end server components such as Microsoft SharePoint. Office 2010 continues this evolution. Though good results can be achieved using Office 2007 applications with SharePoint 2007, the highest level of value and capabilities can be realized through the integration of Microsoft Office 2010 with SharePoint 2010,” the company added.

Stephen Elop, president of the Microsoft Business Division, will be the one announcing the worldwide availability of Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010, with an emphasis on the fact that the two offerings represent the future of business productivity. One of the strongest selling points for Office 2010 is that the productivity suite is not limited to the PC, but stretches to smartphones and to the Cloud, with Office Web Apps.

Sony has issued a very positive statement, saying that it will report smaller losses than it previously announced, its gaming business being one portion of the company performing better than expected and is setting the pace for the future. Sony expects to lose about 440 million dollars, which is significantly lower than the 751 million it announced at the beginning of February. Final financial results for the fiscal year, which ended on March 31, 2010 are expected to come out in a few days.

An official statement from Sony reads, “improved performance within the game business and Vaio PCs as a result of better than anticipated reductions in both operating expenses and manufacturing cost.” The results are pretty good when taking into account the fact that Sony lost more than 1 billion dollars during fiscal 2008.

The huge loss spurred the company to make some significant cuts in personnel and streamline the structure of its divisions. When it comes to the games division, Sony put out the new PlayStation 3 Slim, a hardware version of its home console that uses less energy and has a smaller profile.

Since the new device was launched in August 2009, sales of the PS3 have jumped significantly, helped by a string of high profile videogame launches like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Heavy Rain or God of War 3. The overall aim is to get the games and services division to turn a profit before March 2011.

The PlayStation 3 is set to get two significant upgrades during 2011: a motion tracking controller and the ability to play 3D videogames. The PlayStation Move is set to arrive at some point during the fall and will compete directly with Microsoft’s Project Natal, while the 3D abilities will be delivered via firmware updates throughout the year.

Tyra Banks is moving on up: known for her love of books, the former model and television personality is also coming out with a book of her own. Called “Modelland,” it will be a fantasy novel with some touches of magic as well, Tyra reveals on her personal webpage. Moreover, “Modelland” will be the first of a series of three novels, she says, which will certainly please her fans.

Part of her ongoing efforts of expanding the concept of beauty and of showing that it’s more than just a standard, “Modelland” promises to be a unique journey into a fantasy world, one that will undoubtedly enchant readers regardless of whether they’re 8 or 80, the model promises. It is a project on which she’s been working hard for quite some time and that has been on her mind for years, so she’s now positively thrilled to be making the announcement of the upcoming release.

“Hi everybody… I’m so EXCITED!! I said I was going to do it, and here it is! It’s for all the girls and guys who want a lot more FANTASY in their lives… and some fierceness and magic, romance and mystery, crazy and wild adventures, and yeah, some danger too. It’s my novel called Modelland (pronounced “Model Land”) that takes you to a fantastical place you’ve never seen, or heard about, or read about before… Where dreams come true and life can change in the blink of a smoky eye. I think Modelland is going to really touch the dreamer in all of us, whether you’re aged anywhere from 8 to 80. (Please don’t be mad if you’re 7 or 81, but ‘eight to eighty’ sounds better!)” Tyra writes.

“The story happens in a make-believe place called Modelland – every girl in the world wants to go there because it’s where ‘Intoxibellas’ are trained. Intoxibellas are drop-dead beautiful, kick-butt fierce and, yeah, maybe they have some powers too. (But I’m confirming NOTHING! Ha. You gotta wait for the book.) The story follows a teen girl and her friends who find themselves magically transported to Modelland, even though they’re really not supposed to be there. (Okay, now, that’s ALL I’m saying!)” she continues.

Out thanks to a partnership between Tyra’s newly founded Bankable Books and Random House, the book will also include characters that are based on people that crossed paths with Tyra in the past, she adds. In the end, “Modelland” is a story about powerful women and, at the same time, a celebration of beauty even outside norms.

Now. however, news reaches us, via Engadget, of the Moonse E-700, a 7-inch tablet PC that’s rumoured to be going on sale soon for a little over £100. Apparently it will use a Cortex A8 processor, running the increasingly usable Android 1.5 software. It’ll have SD card for storage, built-in wi-fi, 5-hours battery life, 720p HD playback on its 800 x 480 resolution screen and a couple of things still on the iPad wish-list, including a built-in camera and USB port. It can handle a very wide range of standards and formats including (deep breath) text, binary, hex and unicode: (RTF, UTF-8: RTF and UTF-8 encoded text), bmp, jpg, gif, png, tga, tiff, etc. plus all formats supported by IrfanView/XnView and external viewers. All formats supported by MS Windows Media Player including: avi, mpg, wmv, mp3 etc. All common web format: html pdf, xml, mht etc. All formats supported by Total Commander Lister plugins.

Incontinence is certainly no laughing matter and we’re ever mindful of the fact that for most of us good health is only a temporary condition, nevertheless we couldn’t resist the briefest of wry smiles after hearing about the SIM System electronic underpants. The basic concept is that when sensors embedded in the wearer’s pads detect moisture it sends an alert via a wireless link to a monitoring station, at a nursing home for instance, so staff can provide prompt assistance to a patient, when they need it. Over a period of several days the timing and frequency of the alerts is analysed, which could help carers and medical professionals determine if there’s pattern and subsequently assist with treatment or care strategies. Hopefully we’ll never have need of such a device – though the odds don’t look good as we live longer – so it’s good to know technology can help if, or rather when our plumbing lets us down.

There’s been quite a lot lately about 3D TV. Sky is busy trialling a service and several manufacturers are coming out with products in the next few months. I have to say I’m experiencing a certain amount of deja vu, having witnessed at least a dozen 3D TV launches in the past 25 years, but maybe this is the one…

Anyway, pretty well all of the technologies on offer require the viewer to wear glasses, usually either polarised, or LCD shuttered, which really isn’t much of an advance from the old green/red tinted glasses or Anaglyph method. There’s also a lot of work being done on lenticular sceens, which displays multiple images through a series of microscopic prisms so that each eye sees a slightly different view, and you don’t need glasses. But here’s another method that doesn’t rely on special screens or glasses. It’s called Wiggle Stereoscopy and it simply displays two images, shot on cameras spaced an eye’s width apart and shown in rapid succession. The 3D effect is quite good but the slow flash rate probably means it’ll never be much more than a curiosity, but make up your own mind. There’s some examples and links at: http://wiggle.sourceforge.net/, plus a facility to create your own wiggle stereographs and you’ll find the first Wiggle 3D music video from Blue Roses on You Tube.

Here’s a really useful tool for capturing whatever is showing on your computer screen (or screens). BB Flashback Express is a free screen recorder that does precisely that. For example, if you wanted to create a tutorial, showing how to do something on a PC then all you have to do is hit the record button and do it! BB Flashback Express records every screen, menu, and mouse movement as a Flash or AVI file, which you can share or upload to YouTube. As an added bonus it captures and record streamed video, like YouTube et-al, and keep this to yourself, it can also record those well known services – no names, no pack drill — that you are not supposed to record and to date have proved to be tricky customers…
