Ottawa motorists have been challenged to leave the phone alone while driving as part of an online distracted driving awareness campaign by the City’s Safer Roads Ottawa Program.

The Leave the Phone Alone campaign runs locally until June 30, 2012 and challenges drivers to take the online pledge to avoid distractions caused by talking, texting or using a hand-held electronic device while driving. While completing the online form, residents will also have the option of receiving a sticker and a bookmark featuring Leave the Phone Alone information.

Between 2006 and 2010, 17 per cent of all reported collisions in Ottawa were a result of distracted driving and 33 per cent of all collisions involved a driver between the ages of 15 and 29.

To take the pledge, visit www.leavethephonealone.ca, or to find out more information about Safer Roads Ottawa visit ottawa.ca.

Using a hand-held phone to text or call while driving is illegal in Ontario and drivers who are caught breaking the law will be fined $155.

For each time period an unidentified person would ring the homeowner’s doorbell and run back to two waiting vehicles that were parked just down the street from the residence.

The strangers were described as white males between the ages of 20 and 25 years.
The vehicles were observed leaving the neighbourhood in different directions and were described as a white Mazda and a dark coloured Honda.

May 9 Jockvale Road, Stonebridge: A caller from the West Barrhaven Community Gardening Club reported a theft incident that took place between 4:30 p.m. on Fri., May 4 and 8:30 a.m. on Sat., May 5.

Stonebridge: 1 Impair, 2 Mischief
Richmond: 1 Mischief
Country Club: 1 Theft

DOWN TO THE WIRE! For three teenage passengers, two males and one female, 16 – 17 years of age, it definitely came down to the wire and a bit of sheer luck after the vehicle they were travelling in went out of control in a curve on Longsfield Dr. at the intersection of Jockvale Rd. and ended up slamming into the side of a house. The teens decided to catch a ride home with a young driver who happened to be impaired.

Witnesses reported being jolted from their sleep at around 2:50 a.m. on Sun., Apr. 29 and discovering a vehicle sitting on their front lawn.

The driver, who fled the scene immediately after the collision, was later found lying at the doorstep of a residence on Abetti Ridge, unconscious and soaking wet.

An initial search of the area by police and the K9 unit failed to locate the driver; however, a homeowner who awoke to the sound of a ringing doorbell at around 4 a.m. called police after he answered the door and found him sitting on his front steps.

Based on the initial investigation the vehicle was travelling southbound on Longsfield Dr. at high speeds when it lost control and left the roadway. After bouncing off of a hydro pole guy wire the car spun around and clipped the hydro pole. It then plowed backwards into the front of the house, sending shockwaves through the wooden structure, before coming to a rest on its side.

Due to the gravity of the situation and the underlying circumstances police criminally charged the 16-year-old Nepean male with one count of taking a motor vehicle without consent, three counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, three counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and three counts of fleeing an accident scene after causing bodily harm.

In addition to repeating the message—DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE—it is also just as important to say, DON’T GET INTO A VEHICLE WITH AN IMPAIRED DRIVER. Before it comes down to the wire why not —PLAN AHEAD for a safe ride home.

May 5 Regatta Avenue, Half Moon Bay: Just before 11 p.m. on Saturday evening a homeowner reported being disturbed by an unidentified teenager who rang his doorbell and took off running.

Upon investigation the homeowner found ten to fifteen teens hiding out behind some fences on Sunset Cove.

Always remember, you are the eyes and ears in your community. Report all suspicious and unusual activity to police and to your neighbourhood. You might be surprised on what you might uncover.

May 3 Evenwood Private, Half Moon Bay: An unidentified culprit smashed in a rear window to a locked vehicle sometime during the overnight hours on Wed., May 2 for unexplained reasons.
At the time the vehicle was parked in the owner’s laneway and no entry into the vehicle was made or attempted.

Apr. 30 Towhee Place, Half Moon Bay: Sometime between 4 p.m. on Fri., Apr. 27 and 7 a.m. on Mon., Apr. 30 unidentified culprits entered into three residences under construction in the Half Moon Bay area and stole three partially installed gas furnaces.

At the time all three homes were left in an insecure state with no door locks or windows.
The furnaces were described as Lennox G61MPV high efficiency gas units with the following serial numbers: 59111H20655, 5911K15992 and 5911M00978. Each unit was valued at around $2600.

May 4 Half Moon Bay: During the early morning hours on Friday a homeowner became suspicious when she overheard the sound of a car alarm being activated on her street of Half Moon Bay and upon looking out of her bedroom window witnessing two males peering into two parked vehicles.

As she continued to look on she watched the males walk up to her vehicle, which was parked in her laneway, and rifle through it. Nothing was reported stolen and police were unable to locate the suspects.

Make the right call! Report it to the police and report the incident to HMB Watch.

Half Moon Bay: 1 Suspicious
Richmond: 7 Theft-fr-Veh.

ATTENTION STONEBRIDGE AND HALF MOON BAY COMMUNITIES. Lock your doors and windows at all times, activate your alarm system while you are away and please—report all suspicious and unusual activity to police. Last Tuesday and Wednesday two daytime B&E events were reported in your community!

The first attempted break and enter occurred at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 24 in the 800 block of Kilbirnie Dr. In this incident the victim awoke to the sound of the doorbell ringing and when he went downstairs to investigate he came face to face with two strangers who were standing in his hallway. They had let themselves into his house through the unlocked front door.

Upon being challenged by the victim one of the strangers’ spoke up and said that he was looking for a friend. When told that they needed to leave both males turned and walked away. They were last seen heading eastbound along Kilbirnie Dr.

Nothing was stolen from the house; however, one of the males’ was noted to be carrying around a 2-foot long ‘slim Jim’ type metal object—the type used to open vehicle doors.

The second break and enter occurred on Rossburn Cres., sometime between 7:15 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Wed., Apr. 25. In this incident unidentified culprits broke into the residence through a rear patio door and searched through the dresser drawers located on the second floor. Stolen were items such as jewelry, money and electronic equipment.

An inspection of the patio door and house did not reveal any signs of forced entry or fingerprints.

Apr. 28 Carina Crescent, Half Moon Bay: Shortly before midnight on Sunday a homeowner called police to report that teenagers were driving around the neighbourhood honking their horns and ringing doorbells.

One car was described as white in colour while the other was black. No licence plate information was captured.

Apr. 28 Riverstone Drive, Stonebridge: Shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday a seemingly intoxicated young male was observed walking back and forth between the complainant’s house and a neighbour ringing their doorbells for unexplained reasons. The male appeared to stumble as he walked back and forth between the houses.

He was described as a white male, 20’s, with dark shaggy hair and was wearing a blue and white striped hoodie with a pair of jeans.

Richmond suffered 7 thefts from vehicle over the period. (At least 5 were unlocked. Maybe just hang a sign saying it’s open?)

Saturday May 5th Regatta Ave. This incident was reported by one of our members.

Our door bell rang at 11pm Saturday night, May 5th. When we went to the door, we saw a shadow, the shape of a teen, running away after doing the deed and turning the corner on Sunset Cove. My husband went outside to investigate and followed the path of the fleeing teen. Sure enough, at the intersection, there were about a dozen teens hiding behind a couple of houses on Sunset Cove. As soon as they saw my husband, they scattered like roaches. It would seem they were out that night to have some “fun”.
The incident was reported to police.

Please, if you have teens that may have been involved in this incident please have a chat with them about disturbing the peace. This is at least annoying and at most can get your teen into serious trouble with an angry neighbour.

Criminal Code of Canada section 30
Every one who witnesses a breach of the peace is justified in interfering to prevent the continuance or renewal thereof and may detain any person who commits or is about to join in or to renew the breach of the peace, for the purpose of giving him into the custody of a peace officer, if he uses no more force than is reasonably necessary to prevent the continuance or renewal of the breach of the peace or than is reasonably proportioned to the danger to be apprehended from the continuance or renewal of the breach of the peace. [R.S., c.C-34, s.30.]

In our last newsletter and O.P.S. Report there was an incident about a jogger and a suspicious man in a late 90′s Honda Civic. I’m happy to hear that this person contacted the police and this news eventually made it to this website, but it took 3 weeks to get here.

Please, in the future if anything suspicious happens or anything that can impact your community, please contact the police first and this website second. You can use the contact page to send the information directly to your Watch Coordinator and the information can be posted the same day and a news bulletin sent out within 12 hours. I think that’s a whole lot better than waiting
3 weeks to find out about something like this happening on your street.

Thank you,

ATTENTION HALF MOON BAY COMMUNITY. A female jogger alerted police to a suspicious incident that caused her some concern—while out jogging in the area of River Run Ave. and River Mist Dr., in the early afternoon hours on Mon., Apr. 16, the runner took notice of a vehicle that appeared to be hovering close by.

Responding to her intuition the runner took action by focusing in on her suspected predator and sent him a clear message that he was being watched.

As the vehicle made a u-turn to pass her by again she looked directly at the driver to gather information on his physical characteristics. However, upon realizing that he was being watched the driver quickly turned away to conceal his identity and proceeded to leave the area.

The driver was described as a black male, 30-35 years of age. He was wearing a baseball cap.
The vehicle was described as a late 1990’s model Honda Civic that was green or black in colour.
Safety is everyone’s responsibility! When out jogging or running be aware of everything that goes on around you and listen to your instincts. The earlier you detect a potential problem the more time you will likely have to formulate a plan and deal with it.

Apr. 18 Cambrian Road, Half Moon Bay: Emergency services were called to a residence in Half Moon Bay at around noon on Wednesday for a report of a working fire.

Once on scene firefighters quickly rescued two family dogs from the burning house and extinguished the blaze that had gained a foot hold in the kitchen’s outer wall and ceiling.

The main fire damage was located in and around the stove area and smoke damage was evident in all of the downstairs rooms.

Investigation determined that the fire resulted from some plastic baby bottles being accidentally left unattended on a heated stove in a sterilizing pot.

Apr. 18 Nutgrove Avenue, Half Moon Bay: A complainant called police just before 11 p.m. on Wednesday after she happened upon a backpack sitting in the middle of the roadway for no apparent reason.

The backpack contained $400 in cash and some personal identification.

Apr. 19 Urbancrest Private, Half Moon Bay: Sometime during the overnight hours on Mon., Apr. 16, an unidentified culprit entered into a vehicle that was parked in the complainant’s driveway and stole a $600 pair of Steiner binoculars and a Winchester hunting knife that was described as having a multi-coloured handle and a 4-6 inch blade.

The complainant believed that his vehicle was locked; however, there were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle.

ATTENTION: The Ottawa Police Service has been made aware of a community concern that occurred late Thursday afternoon on Apr. 12 in a section of Stonebridge Park that runs along Jockvale Rd. towards Prince of Wales Dr. A complainant reported being unnerved by a ‘strange’ individual who was walking in the park and acting in a suspicious manner. A retired couple, who happened to be walking close by, confirmed the complainant’s observations.

The Rideau-Goulbourn Community Police Centre is only aware of one such report for the Stonebridge community parks.

While visiting Stonebridge Park at around 3 p.m. the complainant took notice of a male walking towards her because something about him felt amiss. Being familiar with the park’s social atmosphere she knew that walkers were generally friendly with each other and tended to greet one another. However, this stranger did not meet her safety thresholds and therefore stood out like a sore thumb.

Listening to her intuitions the complainant kept an eye on the stranger as he silently passed her by and continued to do so until he disappeared out of sight.
Not wanting to let her guard down she continued to conduct shoulder checks to ensure that the male wasn’t trying to follow her or sneak up on her.

As she neared a footbridge she heard strange noises coming from behind her and when she turned to look the male was standing right behind her; she had no idea how he had managed to get so close to her so quickly.

Fearful, the complainant immediately turned in the opposite direction and approached a couple, which she had passed minutes earlier, for assistance. Upon describing her situation to the couple, the gentleman, who happened to be a retired RCMP officer, responded by saying “Oh, that male!” He too felt that there was something suspicious about the stranger.
Prior to driving the complainant home the couple took note of all the vehicle licence plate numbers in the parking lot for police.

The complainant described the stranger as a Caucasian male, late 30’s to early 40’s, 5’9” to 5’10” tall, medium build, average looking, medium complexion, clean shaven, dark hair colour with a hint of grey with a strange “poufy” groomed hair-do that looked like a pompadour.
He appeared furtive looking and wore dark glasses so his eyes could not be seen and a dark blue jogging suit with red and white trim.

Safety is everyone’s responsibility. When walking in the park always be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for anything that may put you at risk. Always keep your head up and observe your surroundings including the people around you and any possible sources of assistance. It is important to project strength, don’t appear to be lost or confused—walk with confidence and purpose.
When possible, walk with a friend and avoid isolated areas. It’s best not to wear headphones, but if you do, keep the volume low so you can monitor your environment. Take note of the area as you walk for possible places of refuge along your route in case of emergency.

Remember, you are the eyes and ears in the community. Take action by reporting all suspicious and usual activity to police and to the community.

Apr. 13 Blackshire Circle, Stonebridge: A homeowner called police at around 3:40 a.m. on Saturday after he noticed four strangers sitting inside of a vehicle that was parked right in front of his home for unexplained reasons.

The homeowner felt that the occupants were acting suspiciously because of the way they were moving about the vehicle and suspected that the vehicle might have been stolen.

The vehicle disappeared out of sight before police arrived in the neighbourhood.

Apr. 9 6300 section of Prince of Wales Drive, Rideau-Goulbourn: Unidentified culprits dragged a green John Deere garden tractor off of a homeowner’s driveway sometime during the overnight hours on Sun., Apr. 8. It was last seen parked and locked in the driveway at around 7 p.m. The tractor was valued at $3000 and it was equipped with a mower deck.

Apr. 10 Twin Elm Road, Twin Elm: A second riding lawn tractor was reportedly stolen off of a homeowner’s property sometime between 1 and 3 a.m. on Sat., Apr. 7 by unidentified culprits. The tractor was described as a green coloured, 22-hp L135 John Deere tractor. The unsecured tractor was last seen sitting in close proximity to the homeowner’s residence.

Apr. 9 Chanonhouse Street, Richmond: An unlocked vehicle was rummaged through by an unidentified culprit sometime during the early morning hours on Monday. A bunch of hand tools were reported stolen.
