The Jackson Kayak Coosa is a great fishing platform for rivers, streams & creeks (which I love). But, I needed to be able to outfit a non-permananent fishfinder for lakes & reservoirs since it also serves as my primary tournament fishing kayak. The Tallon system offers a lot of versatility, but that setup is rather pricey after you consider all the adapters you have to buy. Here is how I was able to utilize RAM Mount accessories and some leftover items from around the house to maximize my Coosa experience at a fair cost.

This is a tandem kayak made by Ocean Kayak. It can also be used as a single seater. My first impressions are that I really like this kayak. It is as much or more stable than my Trident and faster if you have two people. Not only that, but surprisingly, from the back seat the Malibu Two is exceptionally maneuverable! I can almost turn the whole kayak around while sitting still in one single stroke! Neither the Scrambler nor the Trident can do that. Did I mention it was comfortable? Your butt deserves a nice wide ride like this one. Even though it’s wide, the ride doesn’t feel rough like the Scrambler but smooth and slick.

I am also amazed at how well it tracks, even in wind. I am never fighting to stay on course (unlike the Trident which likes to turn into the wind). The only drawback is that it does not come with built in hatches and does not have any designated space for rod holders and such. If you use your creativity though, I’m sure you can figure out the solution to these issues. I give the Malibu Two XL 4.8 stars out of 5, highly recommended if you are looking for a tandem kayak. Note that this kayak, although a tandem, is still shorter and lighter than my Trident. I am considering buying one this summer if I find anyone who wants to go fishing with me!

The Wilderness Tarpon 100 is lightweight, easy to transport and a stable kayak. The few times I’ve taken it on the rivers it’s been great. Lake fishing isn’t bad either, but you’re going to drift faster on lakes but not a real big problem. I’ve taken this out on days where the waves that looked around 2ft tall and had no problems (side note: I was using just one side of my paddle too, lol).

There are no problems with turning great maneuverability. It has two medium hatches; one in the middle and one in the front which are great for storage on long trips or, instead of stringers for your fish, you can pop open a hatch and put the fish in. The large trunk works well as a large livewell/bait tank. The trunk holds my 11 gallon livewell, milk crate and rod holders. You can’t stand on this kayak but it’s stable when sitting and tilting. The only real CON to me is it’s limited room for gear.

If the Hobie Pro Angler is the Battleship of kayaks, this is the Battle Tank of fishing. It weighs 60lb empty but has a carrying capacity of over 500bs. Primary stability is excellent, no tippy feeling at all, but secondary stability is only so-so. Speed is as fast or faster than most other kayaks out there. This kayak was born to fish.

The rod pod in the center holds fishing poles so you can access them on the water and you can store them if you are landing in surf. The built in rod holders are nice, sometimes I tap my rods when paddling though. Other fishing features include a fishfinder cover, a scupper hole that is designed to be used with Humminbird fishfinder transducers, and a hanging case to keep your fishfinder battery dry and sealed.

I am thoroughly satisfied with this kayak, especially because I fish big waters often. The only thing I want is the rudder to keep it tracking straighter and help manuever. Check out the vids on youtube of the guys who fish for Halibut in Alaska, there’s a reason why they all use Trident 15s.

We regret to update you that there has been a confirmed case of foul play in the Hmong Kayak Fishing Club Challenge season and Koewy Heu (GA) has been indefinitely banned from the Challenge season and Hmong Kayak Fishing Club Facebook group. Upon questioning Heu, he disclosed his entries were a result of several anglers fishing for one virtual stringer. Heu willingly accepted the repercussions of his actions and his entries have been disqualified — the results have been updated to reflect the new standings.

We do not take pleasure in having to make this announcement, but we wish to maintain the highest level of integrity for the anglers and for the spirit of the challenges.

Thank you for your continued support of Hmong Kayak Fishing Club.
