Dear friends:

An Advent Suggestion
What is HMWN Radio Maria? Many concerned Catholics have asked and continue to ask this question.
A simple answer could be: As John the Baptist, we are still the forerunners of Christ, namely, “A voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths’”. In fact, we are living, all year long, the season of Advent, understood as a time of preparation for the coming of Christ. That is what the Church is for and that is what the Blessed Mother continues to remind all of us.
In this issue of HMWN Web Magazine, by publishing the text of the booklet "The HMWN Project", we try to give an answer about our own identity and mission.
Read it in this season of Advent, and then, if the Blessed Mother calls you, do not hesitate to join us to become a true witness, “A voice crying out in the wilderness.”

Behind the Scenes at HMWN Radio Maria

Family Matters hosted by Lou Iacobelli (Monday 12:30 pm)

This program aims to communicate the teachings of Catholic Church about life and the family. We want it to be a curriculum where together with the listener, parents and students, we can learn more about how our faith can help us to build a culture of life. Today’s heresy is that the family and the person are being told that they can be and do whatever they choose. Through the Book of the Month reviews and interviews, the program tries to guide the listener to seek the truth.
Our most recent reviews have been Architects of the Culture of Death co-authored by Donald De Marco and Benjamin Wiker and Render unto Caesar by Archbishop Charles Chaput. Both books are an insightful and practical guide for Catholic citizens to better serve the country by promoting a culture of life and how to live our Catholic beliefs, in our family and the public square.
We are told in Deuteronomy (30: 15, 19), “See I have set before you life and death, blessings and curse; therefore choose life that you and your descendents may live.” Commenting on these words, in The Gospel of Life, John Paul II said that we are called every day to the duty of choosing between the “culture of life” and the “culture of death.” This clearly tells us who we are and what we should do as Christians.
Join us every Monday at 12: 30pm as we try to put into practice what may strike some people as wishful thinking, but we see as realistic: to love everyone, including the unborn, as Christ loves us. It’s the only true way of nurturing a culture of life and family.

Last year in preparation for the Eucharistic Congress, the HMWN program “Community in Concert” hosted by Sharon DiCecco interviewed Michelle and Dan Sullivan of Brampton. The couple participated in the pilgrimage of the Ark of the New Covenant in Trois Rivieres en route to Quebec City. Michelle brought a special gift to the travelling troupe. She daily recited the rosary in Algonquin. Deep within the forests of Quebec could be heard the sounds of praying the rosary in three languages: French, English and Huron-Wendat. Now HMWN Catholic Radio is proud to announce the release of a new CD of The Luminous Mysteries in these three Canadian languages.

Along with Michelle you will hear the Shakespearean voice of the Jesuit priest, Fr. Len Altilia. Also, Stuart McDougall, the Eucharistic Minister of Our Lady Peace and Russell Asch, a seminarian at St. Augustine who kindly offered to pray the rosary in French. The music is titled, "This Earthly Space" and was composed by Sal Lima and Dave DiCecco. Heeding our blessed Mother's call to say the rosary, you'll be inspired by these voices in prayer as they bring you closer to her Son Jesus.

Our own HMWN studio technicians Jason Taylor, Alex Dias and Tony Giannantonio masterfully arranged the music and the voices.

(b) HMWN Radio Maria 2010 Marian Calendar
(32 Pages - $5.00)

The 2010 HMWN Calendar aims at promoting the Christian response to the Gospel’s call to worship.
First, it gives prominence to each Sunday (The Christian Worship Day) by showing its position in the Liturgical Year. Second, to underline the spiritual importance of Mary in our Christian life, it emphasizes all the more common Marian Feasts of the year.

Third, month after month, it provides information about the nature and expectations of HMWN, a radio station devoted to spread the Good News in the modern world.

An Invitation to Young People in the Name of Friendship

“The concept of friendship has enjoyed a renewed prominence in the vocabulary of the new digital social networks that have emerged in the last few years. The concept is one of the noblest achievements of human culture. It is in and through our friendships that we grow and develop as humans. For this reason, true friendship has always been seen as one of the greatest goods any human person can experience.

We should be careful, therefore, never to trivialize the concept or the experience of friendship. It would be sad if our desire to sustain and develop on-line friendships were to be at the cost of our availability to engage with our families, our neighbours and those we meet in the daily reality of our places of work, education and recreation. If the desire for virtual connectedness becomes obsessive, it may in fact function to isolate individuals from real social interaction while also disrupting the patterns of rest, silence and reflection that are necessary for healthy human development.

Friendship is a great human good, but it would be emptied of its ultimate value if it were to be understood as an end in itself. Friends should support and encourage each other in developing their gifts and talents and in putting them at the service of the human community. In this context, it is gratifying to note the emergence of new digital networks that seek to promote human solidarity, peace and justice, human rights and respect for human life and the good of creation. These networks can facilitate forms of co-operation between people from different geographical and cultural contexts that enable them to deepen their common humanity and their sense of shared responsibility for the good of all...

I would like to address myself, in particular, to young Catholic believers: to encourage them to bring the witness of their faith to the digital world. I ask you to introduce into the culture of this new environment of communications and information technology the values on which you have built your lives. In the early life of the Church, the great Apostles and their disciples brought the Good News of Jesus to the Greek and Roman world. Just as, at that time, a fruitful evangelization required that careful attention be given to understanding the culture and customs of those pagan peoples so that the truth of the gospel would touch their hearts and minds, so also today, the proclamation of Christ in the world of new technologies requires a profound knowledge of this world if the technologies are to serve our mission adequately.

It falls, in particular, to young people, who have an almost spontaneous affinity for the new means of communication, to take on the responsibility for the evangelization of this "digital continent". Be sure to announce the Gospel to your contemporaries with enthusiasm. You know their fears and their hopes, their aspirations and their disappointments: the greatest gift you can give to them is to share with them the "Good News" of a God who became man, who suffered, died and rose again to save all people. Human hearts are yearning for a world where love endures, where gifts are shared, where unity is built, where freedom finds meaning in truth, and where identity is found in respectful communion. Our faith can respond to these expectations: may you become its heralds!"

The Invitation

“Go into the whole world and proclaim the Gospel to every creature. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved; whoever does not believe will be condemned. These signs will accompany those who believe...” (Mark 16:15-17).

The Response

HMWN volunteers are Christians seriously concerned about the glory of God and the salvation of the world. Moved by their faith, they choose to participate in the growth of HMWN Radio Maria in the community in which they live, not for personal gain or interests, but solely for their love of Christ and His heavenly Mother.

The Witnesses

To proclaim the Gospel to all creatures the voice of HMWN needs help from the listeners of each parish. Any person of good will that loves Christ and the Blessed Virgin can become a witness.

Christopher M. Galati, LL.B., B.Ed., B.A. Spec. Hons.

Christopher Galati, a Catholic lawyer and apologist, directs the bi-weekly Wednesday evening (9-10 p.m.) live-on-air program “Catholic Response”, where Catholic responses are provided to all kinds of questions and objections brought up about the Catholic faith. These enquiries come from various sources, including from Catholics wondering how to respond to people who have told them their Catholic beliefs are wrong, or from Catholics who are concerned about family members or friends who have strayed from the Catholic faith or joined another belief system or faith community.

A small sample of the question topics dealt with on “Catholic Response” include: Is there historical evidence for the resurrection of Jesus?; Did Jesus create the papacy?; Do the Crusades or Inquisitions disprove the Catholic Church as the one Church founded by Christ?; Heresies old and new; What is the correct approach to interpreting the Bible?; Is the Catholic Eucharist a mere symbol or the real presence of Christ?; Faith and science - how do modern theories of scientific evolution square with Catholic beliefs?; How should Catholics respond to claims that there is no God? HMWN Radio Maria Annual Day of Prayer
October 4, 2009

The HMWN Annual Day of Prayer is celebrated every year on the first Sunday of October (for the Feast of the Holy Rosary). Its purpose is to pray and make people aware of the work of HMWN Radio Maria. The day of prayer was initiated by Radio Maria Canada (the Italian Radio Maria) in 1996 and has been celebrated ever since by the parishes serving the Italian community of Toronto and Montreal.

(a) Activities of the Day of Prayer

That day, all listeners are invited to devote some more time to prayer for the success of HMWN Radio Maria. With the Pastor’s approval, that Sunday a special prayer for HMWN Radio Maria may be added to the Prayer of the Faithful. In addition, at the end of the Mass there could be a brief presentation, followed by the distribution of HMWN informative material.

(b) Intention for 2009 Prayer of the Faithful
That our communities and our families, with the help of the Catholic media, especially HMWN Radio Maria, become places of communion, of forgiveness and of prayer to God, WE PRAY...

(c) 2009 Presentation at the End of the Mass
Dear friends,
Today is the Annual Radio Maria day of prayer and I would like to bring to your attention a Canadian, English radio station which is called “Holy Mother World Networks” or, in short, HMWN Radio Maria.
This radio station has been in operation since 2005, broadcasting devotional and instructional programs for the spiritual benefit of the Catholic families, the sick, the lonely and the youth. Particularly known and appreciated is the Rosary which is broadcast daily from the Catholic schools. HMWN Radio Maria’s goal is, in fact, to testify openly Christ’s gospel to both old and new generations, bearing the torch of faith and hope in the darkness of our society.
Due to restrictive CRTC regulations we broadcast closed-circuit, and in order to receive the HMWN signal one needs to buy a special radio which costs $60, taxes included and with a $30 tax receipt to the buyer. Starting now, this will be further facilitated by a “Loaning Project”: just ask an HMWN representative (or call the office) and you will be able to get and keep this special radio, free, for one week, at your home, so you become acquainted with and enjoy our programs.
Thank you for your attention. Once again, if you are not presently listening to HMWN Radio Maria, take advantage of the “Loaning Project”. If you are already a listener, please, help us to get the word out, including your prayers and your donations. Thank you and have a pleasant Sunday.

How to begin?
The voice of HMWN needs to be spread with the help of "Two Contact Volunteers" (TCV) from each zone or parish. Any person of good will is accepted. The TCV’s form the core of our HMWN structure and work "two by two" to establish the presence of the voice of Mary in their local Church and/or neighbourhood community.

What is the procedure?
With the assistance of the HMWN staff, the TCV’s will devise a plan on how to begin selling Radio Receivers. HMWN will offer one (or more) radios free of charge for the sole purpose of propagation. The TCV’s (either by themselves and/or through other committed helpers/volunteers), will commit to continuously circulate these radio’s to potential listeners.

How do you keep track of the radios on loan?
The HMWN radios will be on loan for a ONE WEEK period. The TCV’s will keep track of HMWN radio’s on loan by completing the “HMWN Radio Loaner Chart” with appropriate information listed. An “HMWN Radio Loaner Receipt” will be given to the listener to help remind the radio loaner of the start/end dates and include the weekly HMWN Programming Schedule.

What is your goal and mission with this project?
The hope of HMWN Radio Maria “Loaning” of Radios’ Project is to increase the number of our already devoted HMWN listeners, persuade new HMWN “Loaners” to listen to our radio station and programming, and encourage them to purchase an HMWN radio for themselves and/or as a gift for others.

What is the incentive for radio buyers?
There is a special incentive for purchasers of radios. They will now receive a tax donation receipt for 50% of the purchase price.

What is the incentive for the HMWN TCV's?
The TCV’s will receive one radio FREE of charge, for every 20 radios sold, to be assigned to a potential HMWN listener, who cannot afford to purchase a radio receiver.

Hungry For The Spirit is the search for God in His Love, in His Way and in His Truth; it is the need to fill the soul with awe and wonderment of the disclosure of His Beauty in the universe; it is the desire to dispose “the heart and spirit to meet Christ, who is the Beauty of Holiness Incarnate, offered by God to men for their salvation.” (Via Pulchritudinis, II1) It invites us to say with St. Augustine who rediscovers God as “the Truth itself”: "Late have I loved you, O beauty, so old and so new, too late have I loved you! You were here and I sought elsewhere; I was deformed, drowning in those fair forms you made. […] You called. You shouted. You battered my deafness. You shone. You glistened. You shattered my blindness. You radiated and I breathed in your spirit, and I desired you. I tasted you and hungered, thirsted after you. You touched me and I burned for your peace." Rosary in Our Schools
The Rosary in Our Schools project has been a huge success these past four years. Since October 2005, HMWN Radio Maria has been broadcasting the Holy Rosary daily from an ever-expanding number of Toronto Catholic District School Board and York Catholic District School Board schools throughout the scholastic year.

Many of our Catholic schools are going to be involved also in the 2009-2010 school year. Schools participating from TCDSB include All Saints, Immaculate Conception, James Culnan, St. Jude, Mother Cabrini, St. Bernard, St. Clare, St. Fidelis, St. Jane Frances, St. John the Evangelist, St. Leo, St. Raphael, St. Pius X, St. Robert, St. Roch, and Transfiguration of Our Lord. Schools participating from the YCDSB include Father John Kelly, Pope John Paul II, Holy Spirit, San Marco, and St. Clement.

The Year of the Priests
HMWN Radio Maria is very happy to celebrate the year of the priest. Priests deserve this. They needed this recognition from the Church and from society. Their dignity and their importance needed to be recognized. It is with joy that, to express these feelings of respectful love for the priests, we are re-broadcasting “God’s Calling”, a series of interviews prepared for us by Theresa Medina Smith. HMWN Radio Maria and Devotional Catholicism

Is HMWN Radio Maria in favour of “Devotional Catholicism? The answer is “Yes!” HMWN Radio Maria believes that our listeners, in virtue of the sacrament of Baptism, have been called to be true worshippers, in “Spirit and Truth”, of the Triune God. This means that, as Christians, the most important duty is to pray to God, first and foremost, even before our duty to serve well the society we belong to (and this should be done) and even before our call to help our neighbour (and we must help).

Prayer defines our Christian life and, for this reason prayer is the first characteristic of HMWN’s service. In fact, we are offering to the listeners the opportunity to listen and participate to the Holy Mass daily, which is the greatest act of worship one can possibly do. In addition, there is the possibility of reciting the Divine Office, which is also the official worshipping prayer of the Church.

Up to this point, you, as an HMWN listener, are already sharing the whole liturgical prayer of the Church. But there is more. You are also invited to join daily in some of the most popular “Catholic devotions”.

First, devotions to Jesus: the “Eucharistic Blessing”, the “Divine Mercy Chaplet” and the “15 prayers of St. Bridget”.
Devotions to Mary: 7 Rosaries (recited four times during the day and three times at night); the “Angelus” recited 3 times a day.
Other devotions: Monday - The Guardian Angels; Tuesday - The Canadian Martyrs; Wednesday - St. Joseph; Thursday - For the Poor Souls; Friday - For a Happy Death.
All together, including the morning and evening prayers, the HMWN listeners are able to dedicate, every day, 8 hours of prayer to the Lord.

Obviously, the abundance of external devotional practices reinforces the virtue of devotion, which brings about a certain ardour of affection in the things of God and, day after day, engenders a growing joy for serving the Lord. A foretaste of the eternal happiness reserved for those who diligently answer the call to worship the Lord in “Spirit and Truth”.

For Volunteers and Listeners of God's Will
1. HMWN Radio Maria “Loaning” of Radios’ Project

HOW TO BEGIN?
The voice of HMWN needs to be spread with the help of "Two Contact Volunteers" (TCV) from each zone or parish. Any person of good will is accepted. The TCV’s form the core of our HMWN structure and work "two by two" to establish the presence of the voice of Mary in their local Church and/or neighbourhood community.

WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE?
With the assistance of the HMWN staff, the TCV’s will devise a plan on how to begin selling Radio Receivers. HMWN will offer one (or more) radios free of charge for the sole purpose of propagation. The TCV’s (either by themselves and/or through other committed helpers/volunteers), will commit to continuously circulate these radio’s to potential listeners.

HOW DO YOU KEEP TRACK OF HMWN RADIO’S ON LOAN?
The HMWN radios will be on loan for a ONE WEEK period. The TCV’s will keep track of HMWN radio’s on loan by completing the “HMWN Radio Loaner Chart” with appropriate information listed. An “HMWN Radio Loaner Receipt” will be given to the listener to help remind the radio loaner of the start/end dates and include the weekly HMWN Programming Schedule.

WHAT IS OUR GOAL AND MISSION WITH THIS PROJECT?
The hope of HMWN Radio Maria “Loaning” of Radios’ Project is to increase the number of our already devoted HMWN listeners, persuade new HMWN “Loaners” to listen to our radio station and programming, and encourage them to purchase an HMWN radio for themselves and/or as a gift for others.

WHAT IS THE INCENTIVE FOR THE RADIO BUYERS?
There is a special incentive for purchasers of radios. They will now receive a tax donation receipt for 50% of the purchase price.

WHAT IS THE INCENTIVE FOR THE HMWN TCV’S?
The TCV’s will receive one radio FREE of charge, for every 20 radios sold, to be assigned to a potential HMWN listener, who cannot afford to purchase a radio receiver.

Dr. Nakla, with each program, brings us the latest developments in natural health issues. All of this is done in the context of a Catholic perspective. Recent shows have provided the listener with the following health information:

- even low doses of radiation therapy for low-grade brain tumours may cause decline in cognitive abilities;

- sardines are one of the best sources of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids;

-brazil nuts (1-2/day) are a rich source of selenium, a mineral that may reduce a man's risk of developing prostate cancer;

- edamame -- green soya beans in a pod - contain a protein that helps stabilize blood sugar levels and omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to combat depression;

-Vitamin D can help to reduce the risk of developing cancer in post-menopausal women;

- a NY Times story reported that some doctors made sure that studies on the anti-psychotic drugs Concerta and Risperdal turned out favourably;

- a preservative known as Thimerosal, used in vaccine, has been shown to cause neural damage similar to that in autism patients;

- running/walking barefoot is healthy because it allows the foot to flex and better absorb shock;

-walk backwards or sideways to boost your brain power;

-physical fitness has been shown to improve and protect our health against colon cancer, cataracts, and to keep the mind sharp;

- statins, drugs that are used to lower cholesterol, may cause damage to muscles and produce aches and weakness.

So as you can see from these examples, those of us who follow Dr. Selim's program know the value of the heath information he shares with the HMWN Radio Maria Family. Students in Prayer: Rosary in Our Schools

The voices of children pray the rosary daily on HMWN Radio Maria.

The Rosary in Our Schools project has been a huge success these past four years. Since October 2005, HMWN Radio Maria has been broadcasting the Holy Rosary daily from an ever-expanding number of Toronto Catholic District School Board and York Catholic District School Board schools throughout the scholastic year.

Many of our Catholic schools are presently involved. Schools participating from TCDSB include All Saints, Immaculate Conception, James Culnan, Mother Cabrini, Senhor Santo Cristo, St. Antoine Daniel, St. Bernard, St. Clare, St. Fidelis, St. Jane Frances, St. John the Evangelist, St. Leo, St. Raphael, St. Robert, St. Roch, St. Thomas Aquinas and Transfiguration of Our Lord. Schools participating from the YCDSB include Father John Kelly, Pope John Paul II, San Marco, St. Clement, St. John Bosco, and St. Michael Academy.

Thousands of students have participated in reciting the Holy Rosary, live on air, and have been touched by the power of prayer, while learning about the life of Jesus and His mother, Mary, through the mysteries of our faith.

Among the schools participating, all have found a renewed sense of community and fraternity. All our students express the same message of strengthening their faith, enriching their spiritual growth, and deepening their commitment and relationship with God, through their praying the Rosary.

The Year of the Priest
On the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Friday 19 June, Pope Benedict XVI has inaugurated a "Year for Priests" in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the death of John Mary Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests worldwide. This Year is meant to deepen the commitment of all priests to interior renewal for the sake of a more forceful and incisive witness to the Gospel in today's world, and will conclude on the same Solemnity in 2010.

HMWN Radio Maria is very happy to celebrate the year of the priest. Priests deserve this. They needed this recognition from the Church and from society. Their dignity and their importance needed to be recognized. It is with joy that, to express these feelings of respectful love for the priests, we are re-broadcasting “God’s Calling”, a series of interviews prepared for us by Theresa Medina Smith. “The Luminous Mysteries in English, French and Huron-Wendat”'

“Community in Concert” is a pleasure to host. I thoroughly enjoy listening to and being with all our guests. It’s truly an uplifting experience. Last year, in preparation for the Eucharistic Congress, we interviewed Michelle and Dan Sullivan of Brampton who joined the pilgrimage of the Ark of the New Covenant in Trois Rivieres en route to Quebec City. Michelle brought a special gift to the travelling troupe. She recited the daily rosary in Algonquin. Deep within the forests of Quebec the recitation of the rosary became a tri-lingual affair. Precious pleas were offered daily in French, English and Algonquin by this tight band of portageurs. Thank-you Michelle for sharing that story with HMWN, for it inspired the production of “The Luminous Mysteries in English, French and Huron-Wendat” CD. (Click here for Michelle Sullivan’s interview).
Just prior to meeting Michelle, we interviewed Professor John Steckley who is an expert in the Huron-Wendat language. How did a Huron speaking professor from Humber College end up at Radio Maria? We were hunting for an expert on the relations between the Jesuits and the Hurons. We contacted Sainte-Marie among the Hurons in Midland, Ontario, and voila up trotted John to the plate. It was quite hilarious, really, we had the Huron voice on track before the English or the French voices! The spirits of Jean de Brebeuf and Marie of the Incarnation must have been working on our behalf. (Click here for John Steckley’s interview)

The finely tuned, Shakespearean trained voice of Jesuit priest, Fr. Len Altilia added a sharp brightness to the Luminous mysteries. Stuart McDougall, Eucharistic Minister of Our Lady of Peace Church added his sincere, clear voice to the mix. Russell Asch, a seminarian from St. Augustine’s kindly offered his eloquent French.
Our studio technicians extraordinaire, Jason Taylor, Alex Dias and Tony Giannantonio are to be highly commended for sewing all the voices and the music together for you.
The music, composed by Sal Lima and Dave DiCecco is called “This Earthly Space”, but you can be rest assured that it will move you to a “Celestial Space”.

The Mission of the Seventy-two (Lk 10:1-12)

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others whom he sent ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them, "The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest. Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way. Into whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this household.' If a peaceful person lives there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you.

Stay in the same house and eat and drink what is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his payment. Do not move about from one house to another. Whatever town you enter and they welcome you, eat what is set before you, cure the sick in it and say to them, 'The kingdom of God is at hand for you.'

Whatever town you enter and they do not receive you, go out into the streets and say,
'The dust of your town that clings to our feet, even that we shake off against you.' Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.
The Mission of the Servers at Cana

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." (And) Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servers, "Do whatever He tells you."

A Message For Our Listeners
Dear Friends:

I have an important message for all of you. The sales and distribution of radio receivers, which is crucial to the future existence of HMWN Radio Maria, needs to greatly increase. About 1,500 HMWN radio receivers have been sold since we began broadcasting in 2005 and the number of donations is minimal. These numbers cannot sustain our radio apostolate. We need many more listeners and donors.

What Do We Do?
In the past weeks, we have examined the situation and taken some important decisions.

First, we have reconsidered our central mission: to promote the Christian life for our families in today’s secular society. Like the 72 disciples (Lk 10:1-12), we are volunteers at the service of the Kingdom of the Lord, bringing to all the invitation to heed to Our Lady's call: “Do what (Jesus) tells you.” This too is our mission; this is what we want to continue to do together. And, like the disciples who “took food and drink offered to sustain themselves” (Lk 10:7), HMWN Radio Maria relies solely on financial donors to continue broadcasting our programs over the radio.

Secondly, we know that Jesus called the Apostles individually (this also happens to all of us at Baptism), but then He sent them out “two by two”, “in pairs”. So we believe it’s important to follow Jesus’ invitation. HMWN, therefore, will use Jesus’ example to start and to continue the promotion of the radio by enlisting "Two Contact Volunteers" for every parish or zone.

Currently HMWN can be listened to in the archdiocese of Toronto and in the dioceses of Hamilton and St. Catharines. Toronto has 223, Hamilton 120 and St. Catharines 45 parishes. This means that in order to have “Two Contact Volunteers” per each parish, HMWN will require 776 contact volunteers. This is indeed a very challenging, but, with your help, not impossible mission.

The “Two Contact Volunteers” will form the core of HMWN’s media missionary work; these "Two" will help to establish the presence of the voice of Mary through HMWN in the family, the community and the local parish.
This radio project of evangelization is enormous and will require a great deal of labour, but it will be a labour of love as we work for the Lord. Presently, we have people in only a handful of parishes. We need to re-organize our presence in those parishes where we are known, and invite many others to join. This apostolic task can only succeed with our unfailing commitment for a long period of time, and with dedication that does not sway, nor derail from our prime focus of expanding our audience by selling radios.

Where Do We Start?
There’s an immediate need to enlarge our listening audience. Time is of the essence. We must start now. The first thing the "Two Contact Volunteers" have to do is to work out a plan with our help on how best to begin selling of Radio Receivers.
What's the Plan?
We trust that you will say yes to this effort and help HMWN to “spread the word.” As soon as we hear from you, HMWN will give each team of two one (or more) radios free, so that they can be continuously circulated to new potential listeners. Each team can strategize with the help of other committed helpers/volunteers the best way to proceed at each zone. Should the need arise the "Two Contact Volunteers" can ask for more radios to be used for the purpose of previewing and listening to our programs and getting to know our apostolate. Of course, we’re hoping that once they try listening to the station they will want to buy a radio or get one for a gift.

There is also a special incentive offered to the two contact volunteers. For every 20 radios sold, one radio will be given to the organizers. They can then choose someone who wants to listen to HMWN but may not be able to afford to buy a radio receiver.

In brief, although a tall order to undertake, this is what needs to be done NOW. If more radio receivers are sold, this will increase the number of HMWN listeners and financial donors and thus secure the future survival of HMWN Radio Maria. We hope and pray that you respond with a YES to this call.

Behind the Scenes at Radio Maria

At the age of 9 like most boys my age I fell in love with sports and moreover, the idea of becoming a sports-caster. I wanted to tell the story of the game, excite the listener with the play by play, share interesting sports related stories and stats, as well as share my enthusiasm for life. To fulfill this dream I went to college for radio broadcasting and learnt a multitude of skills and techniques. With experiences attained at college utilizing production software, I felt very much accustomed to the workings of radio and with behind the scenes work, capturing and effectively portray the imaginations of those who wished to share their gifts via the radio. For the past year I have been fortunate to be part of the family at HMWN Radio Maria. My skills and gifts from God have enabled me to be part of a bigger dream; sharing and spreading the word of God and our faith. I couldn't be more blessed to work with a wonderful group of people. Thanks to God.

The Story of Sr. Carmelina’s Vocation

"Many times I've been asked how long I've been a sister: my religious call entered my heart when I was 12 years old, but I could not immediately join an order because of family reasons and my health.
The Lord began to test me at the age of 14 and at 16 suffering was already part of my life. Thanks to God and his mercy, I've always had the strength to accept my condition even with so many difficulties. With suffering in my heart, my love for God and for religious life has grown so much.
I hoped that one day Jesus would grant me the grace to make my dream of becoming a nun come true. I never lost hope, and I embraced God's will and everything that it brings.
When I came to Canada for three months to visit members of my family, our Lord had already prepared for me other plans. Many times I had turned to priests to seek out their help because I wanted to see if I could realize this dream of mine before God called me from this life. The answer I got was that I should be resigned to the fact that I was ill, and so could not join any religious order. My illness took me from one hospital to another, but my faith in Jesus and my desire for the religious life kept growing.
In hospital, I had been bedridden for seven years when in 1973 Jesus made me encounter Fr. Claudio Piccinini. His visit lasted just a few minutes, and I didn't see him again until December 17, 1976. Finally, Jesus and my dear Mother in heaven were leading me down the road about which I had dreamt. Fr. Claudio became my spiritual advisor and helped me to fulfill that wish that Jesus had placed in my heart.
Thanks to God, I became a Passionist sister on November 26, 1977 and I'm happy to be a nun even if I'm confined to a hospital bed. I'm also thankful to be associated with Società Unita because it has given me so much happiness, and for the opportunity to work with its members to carry out my apostolate as a nun, offering my prayers as a means of being together with them. Audio Archives

After months of programming, testing and preparing files, the new HMWN Radio Maria archives are now available. We've redesigned our audio archive system and added many more talks previously aired on HMWN Radio Maria.

One of the most exciting features we now offer is a 'Search by keyword' function. For example, if you are looking for a talk on a subject such as the Catholic teaching on abortion, you would simple type 'abortion' in the search box, hit the go button and all related talks would be displayed.
If you enjoy what you are listening to and would like forward a direct link of the talk to someone you know, simply click the 'forward this link to a friend' arrow. Enter your friends information and they will receive an email with a link to the specific talk.

The 'Search by Category' option will help you to narrow down your search if the 'keyword' option is not what you are looking for. Search by program name or Program Host is available as well.

"When we prayed the Rosary, it was very special for me. It feltlike I was praying to Jesus, and Mary and God were watching over us, and listening to us. The Rosary is very important to me, because I’m communicating with God, and Mary, and Jesus. The experience of praying the whole Rosary on Radio Maria, was very touching for me. It was also spiritual. I wasn’t the only one that was touched by this. All the people who were old and sick, who were listening also probably felt touched by this, and it probably brought their spirits up. "

A New Approach in Trying to Resolve the Financial Crisis: Three Commandments

Governments all over the world have been asked to rescue a number of national and global financial institutions from the brink of bankruptcy. In the United States, Citigroup and Bank of America have each received $45 billion to try to make sure they stay afloat. Taxpayers are on the hook for $700 billion from the Troubled Asset Relief Program to back up bad mortgages and uncertain assets. The total government cost could easily add up to trillions of dollars.

If the average person goes to a bank and gets a mortgage on a house, and then finds for whatever reason that he cannot make the payments, the bank, in most cases, will quickly repossess the property.
