When they are feeling ill, there's an endless list of doctor's appointments and tests. Every doctor's appointment seems to result in a medical test which in turn results in another doctor's appointment. And doctors are never on time. In fact it usually takes over an hour for a doctor's appointment and you don't get paid for waiting. Medical tests? Another wait for the test and some of these tests take up to three or more hours. Doctors and hospitals can become an unwelcome way of life.

Personally, my mother has complained of fatigue, stomach and abdominal issues, and hemorrhoids for years. In addition to that she suffered from brain fog and memory loss. In the midst of her ailments I suffered from doctor's remorse with all the appointments and trips to the hospital emergency room, testing facilities...

Her abdominal issues were due to Candida Albicans which were fueled by her adolescent desire to eat carbohydrates and little protein. Of all the choices for protein the only one I could get her to eat was hamburger. When it came to vegetables forget it.

In desperation I bought a vita mix and began making her a drink with one clove of garlic, a stalk of celery, a carrot, and a small red beet. I also added a probiotic to the drink along with some protein powder. Fortunately, she welcomed it and within a few weeks and her modified diet (limited carbohydrates) plus Golden Seal before meals, the Candida was brought under control and her memory improved significantly. A stool sample showed that she had the type of Candida that would respond to Golden Seal or oregano.

Her health and memory improved to an acceptable level. Instead of doctor's appointments which resulted in the doctor shaking his head in confusion and ordering more tests on a weekly basis we went to every three or four weeks.

She also complained of poor vision in one eye and we consulted an ophthalmologist. She was as healthy as she had been in years so I thought it a good opportunity to have her get her cataract operation.

Even though the procedure was done outside the hospital in just a few hours it was tremendously stressful for her physiology. Brain fog and memory loss returned immediately. I had to guide her three times a day over the phone in how to apply the three different drops in her eye. She could not remember the basics and was very anxious about getting it right.
In just one day her mental and physical health slid back to zero and the special vegetable drink seemed to have little value.

One morning as I rode to work I was listening to a station that I never listen to. I didn't know if it was an infomercial, an interview, or an expensive advertisement, but it was about vitamin B12, folic acid and Vitamin B6. My ears perked up as it was a means of replacing B12 shots she was getting every other week. The irony was that after she had the shot she became fatigued for a day and overall we couldn't see any value in the shots plus it was another unwelcome reason to wait in the doctor's office another hour every other week.

The radio infomercial (if that's what it was) indicated that B12, B6 and folic acid were meant to be in combination and went on to indicate that if this product were given to all seniors, their health and memories would dramatically improve. The good news was that the B12, B6, and folic acid were administered sublingually (under the tongue) rather than in a shot and that to get things started, the person taking the treatment should take it at least once each day. Being a stress management specialist and a person somewhat in tune with nutrition, everything said made a lot of sense to me and for around $30 for a month's supply I thought the risk was minimal plus I was desperate.

Each tablet is equivalent to a B12 shot and just after two days my mother's memory improved to the point I didn't need to guide her through how to use the eye drops. After six weeks, her memory improved dramatically and her brain fog is no more and fatigue is greatly diminished. Her hemorrhoids have also improved which her doctor attributes to using Tucks and magnesium oxide cream instead of baby wipes and doctor's appointments are every six weeks.

I have no financial interest in this product and don't resell it. I am merely passing along what I feel is valuable information that can make a difference in dealing with elderly parents. If you are interested go to B12now.com to learn more. I also take it because it is also beneficial to prevent heart disease (an option to playing the cholesterol game). Once we stop working we start to look at how we intend to spend our retirement, particularly what activities and hobbies we intend to pursue. We also consider our living arrangements and often take the opportunity to downsize our suburban homes and relocate to more appropriate accommodation, whist still maintaining our independence.

There are literally tens of thousands of independent senior housing projects that we can move to, each offering the senior citizens alternative living arrangements, either as couples or as individuals. These facilities have been specifically designed with the resident's needs in mind and often provide a range of services, including health and related support services.

Many of the independent senior housing facilities are designed to allow the residents to maintain their individualistic lifestyles whilst at the same time providing a level of security that they may not otherwise be able to enjoy in a typical home. These housing communities draw their residents based on the type of services offered, thus allowing the occupants the option of choosing whether or not he or she wants to participate in the services or programs offered by the facility.

Typically these housing communities revolve around specific activities or services such as swimming pools, gymnasiums or maybe bike and walking paths. Additionally they make offer facilities such as day spas, chapels, beauty salons, retail shops as well as libraries. There are many that incorporate a central dining room which allow residents the opportunity to have prepared meals as well as providing interaction with fellow lodgers. A number of housing communities offer in-house health services, or they may be affiliated with a health care provider that visits the site to provide assistance and related services such as counseling or physiotherapy to those residents in need.

Whilst it is typical that the residents purchase their own housing within the complex there are some facilities that offer long term rental plans. Along with the purchase of the housing there are regular monthly payments required to contribute towards the services offered by the facility as well as for the upkeep and maintenance of common property and facilities such as gardens and swimming pools. Often, if the resident requires daily health care or home assistance such as housework, meal preparation, personal care, shopping or transportation then these services are provided on a user pays basis.

The most positive aspect of an independent senior housing facility is that it provides senior citizens the opportunity to live independently and not have to rely on others for their welfare until it is actually required. As a senior citizen, the selection of the type of community housing that you want will ultimately depends on the lifestyle you intend to lead, together with the range of services you require in order to live comfortably as well as maintaining your health. Additionally, your financial situation has a large influence as to the affordability of which senior housing projects you are able to move to.

If you are approaching retirement age and feel that this style of living arrangement is what you are looking for then it is in your best interest to start researching the independent senior housing communities that are located near to you. Visit the facilities and ask them to provide full details of the costs involved so that you can determine which are best suited to your needs for now and in the future, as you age and require additional assistance from a health and ongoing care perspective.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
For further details about independent senior housing, retirement homes, assisted living and senior care services visit Aged Care Resource.

Secret Benefits For Veterans

Secret Benefits For Veterans - The Untold Story
By: Greg Cook

Are there really secret benefits for veterans?

No, but the VA often makes it very difficult to easily find the benefit you need. And then, if
you find the information, you have to then try and decipher the government lingo. These factors combine to make most people believe that there really are secret benefits for veterans. Or at least secrets from the common everyday person!

Let’s look at one of the most infamous secret benefits for veterans…the veteran disability pension benefit. It is not a retirement benefit that one normally correlates with the word “pension”. It is the most misunderstood benefit available from the VA. In fact, a large majority of the local and county veterans offices that are suppose to help you learn about and understand the benefit are unaware of its existence. Those that do know about the pension benefit often too easily dismiss those that inquire that they probably do not qualify. We have sampled various county veterans services offices in multiple states and have consistently received incomplete and inaccurate information in the majority of them.

HERE IS WHY

The veteran disability pension is an income qualified benefit. If the right questions are not asked, then the adjustments to income from qualified un-reimbursed medical expense is not applied to the income qualifier. For example, if a veteran has household income from social security, retirement pension, interest and stock dividend of $3,000 per month he/she would be told they do not qualify as their income is too high.

Yes, this veterans total household income of 3,000 per month is above the veteran disability pension benefit maximum allowable amount of $1,554 ($18,654 per year). He/She therefore will not qualify. However, the income qualification is not on total income, it is on “countable income”. This is the most common mistake that probably prevents thousands of veterans receive the VA benefit they deserve.

COUNTABLE INCOME

The income qualification for the veterans disability pension benefit is based on having “countable income” below the maximum disability pension benefit level of $1,554 ($18,654 per year). Countable Income is arrived at by subtracting from the total household income all qualified un-reimbursed medical expenses. These expenses include supplemental medical insurance premiums, long term care insurance premiums, prescription costs or co-payments, certain medical supplies like oxygen or incontintence pads, home care costs and even the cost of assisted living.

Our veteran has $3,000 per month in total household income. Straight-up he/she does not qualify. BUT, the veteran pays $697 per month in supplemental insurance premiums and $297 per month in unreimbursed prescription costs. In addition, the veteran has a home care aid coming in to help at a cost of $1,385 per month. The veterans total qualified expenses are $2,379 per month.

The veterans countable income is thus $3,000 minus $2,379 = $621. With a countable income of $621 this veteran is eligible (from the financial qualifier only) to receive a veterans disability pension benefit of ($1,554 maximum benefit minus $621 countable income) $933 per month!

Now that is a great secret benefits for veterans!

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
If you want to get the VA benefits you or your loved one deserves then you too must learn how you can locate and get the SECRET BENEFITS FOR VETERANS at Veterans Care Advisors http://www.veteranscareadvisors.com

What People do when they Retire

By: Jerry Niles

Many people believe that they’ll be able to just completely switch gears once they retire, but the truth is, if you don’t prepare yourself now, retirement may be some of the most boring and dull years of your life. Instead of having just the weekends off, you are going to be at home nearly every day. If you want to make the most of it all and have a happy, successful retirement, you’re going to need to get started preparing right away.

The most obvious thing for people to do when they retire is to take up a hobby. The most important step to take before retiring, though, is to make sure that you actually have some hobbies started. Because once you’re retired, unless you’ve already started a hobby, you’ll find it to be very hard to get into something new, so hobbies aren’t for everyone. Think about what it is that you enjoy doing (be it gardening, craft-making, or even bowling).

Another thing many people get into is volunteering. Not only does volunteering give you something to do in your spare time, it also gives you a sense of accomplishment and can add meaning to your life. Volunteering is also rewarding in other ways, too. There are hundreds of different types of volunteer services and you’ll always be able to meet new and interesting people. Also, don’t think that volunteering is always just about helping someone for free. Many companies pay their volunteers after they’ve had enough experience and prove themselves to be valuable volunteers.

If money is a concern, as for many people it is, than you can always take up a part-time job or start a home based business, as well. This is usually a good option for people who are retiring from a job that involved a lot of interaction with other people. You can even turn certain hobbies into something larger or pursue long lost passions. If you’re into gardening, then you could perhaps start your own landscape development service.

There are plenty of other options, as well. Going back to school is a great way to keep yourself feeling young. You may discover new interests or hobbies or might even be able to make new friends. Taking a vacation around the world with your loved ones is another great way to spend your retirement (everyone should be able to get to see the grand canyon and the great wall). Lots of people seem to enjoy taking up golf or

Ultimately, though, the key to a happy retirement is simply keeping yourself busy and doing whatever it is that you love. Many people tend to only think about the financial aspects of retirement and fail to realize that money is never the answer.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Jerry Niles Long Term Care

Walk In Tubs Best For Seniors

By: Mark Saunders

As people reach their senior years, they need to be more careful about their movements. This is particularly true during bath time. While they can still use the conventional bath tub, it’s advisable for seniors with ailments to avoid it and instead use the walk in tub.

The walk in tub, also called the step in tub, elderly bath tub and senior bath tub, provides easy access for older people including those with physical disabilities and ailments. At least with this tub, they can still enjoy their independence in their home without the need for any assistance. For the caregiver, this kind of tub also takes away additional burden in lifting or supporting a person when using the regular tub.

So what’s the big difference between a conventional tub and a walk in type? Using the regular tub requires a person to climb over the side wall. A walk in tub, on the other hand, is usually higher and has a door so you can just easily walk right in and exit it. This then makes it a safer alternative to the traditional tub.

A distinct feature here is that the walk in tub’s door is positioned very low reaching the floor and is uniquely sealed to keep the water tight. So while you’re inside, you just need to sit on the built-in bench and fill the tub with water.

If you’re planning on purchasing a walk in tub, you will have to consider several factors. The door is a vital consideration so you have to choose between a right-handed door or a left-handed one or those that open inwards or outwards whichever is convenient for you and your family. Take note, though, that the outward swinging door is more expensive. Also ensure that the door latch is just easy to use.

Find out if height is an issue such as if the bather is comfortable with the ledge at the entrance. If not, do request for an additional ramp. Don’t forget also to check the height and contour of the tub seat. When buying, be sure to try sitting in it to make sure that it’s comfortable for every one in your house.

Of course, safety of the elderly walk in tub is of utmost importance. The tub should have slip resistant floors, water temperature gauges and safety bars. These safety features are what make walk in bath tubs popular in health care facilities and home cares. In fact, additional accessories can be fitted to this tub such as shower heads and therapeutic jets.

The safety features here have essential benefits. The raised seat makes for easy access when entering and exiting while the safety rails or bars allow for the safe transfer of bathers using wheelchairs and walking frames. You can also use slide boards when moving from a wheelchair to the seat of the tub.

These senior step in tubs are available in various colors and shapes. And although this type of tub is best suited for the elderly and disabled, it is also great for just about anybody.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
For more information, please visit www.walkintubedepot.com

As You Age, So Do The Needs of Your Skin

As You Age, So Do The Needs of Your Skin
By: Aazdak Alisimo.

Skin is the largest organ we have, a fact most people do not realize since they fail to consider skin to be an organ. Well, it is. As the years pass, however, the organ changes and so should the way you care for it.

Skin is often overlooked by many people, but it is absolutely critical to your health and amazing. Why? If your body is a castle, your skin is the wall protecting it. Things can leave the body, but nothing can get in unless you want it to.

Skin goes through an aging process much like the body and person as a whole. To verify this, you need just look at the skin of a baby versus a grandfather. The ravages of time, pollution, food intake and the sun can be seen in the stark contrast.

As your body ages, you treat it differently. You get more sleep and eat better or at least you should. You should take the same approach with your skin. In fact, skin care should be changed throughout the stages of a person's life.

What other phase of life can we start with besides the newborn. Look at a baby and you know their skin is pristine. Clean with warm water and mild soap to get the best impact. Staying out of the sun is critical.

If you don't believe your skin is tough, consider our next phase of life. Being a kid is all about investigating your environment and lots of boo boos! Skin should be washed every day and sunscreen should be used before going outside.

Being a teen can be really tough and your skin doesn't exactly help. Your body starts taking leaps in maturity and your skin can be a nightmare with pimples and such. Washing twice a day helps. Moisturizers are a bad idea, but Retin-A is not.

The wild hormonal swings of your teens slow down a bit as you age into your twenties. Your skin also starts to calm down. You should still wash your face twice a day, but it may be time to start using moisturizers if your skin is drying out.

Once you turn thirty, it is time to start really considering how to treat your skin. It is starting down the slow, slippery sloap of degrade. Moisturizers should be used daily and you should limit skin cleansing to one time a day.

During your 40s, the skin will really start showing its age. It will become duller, less flexible and start to sage. Yikes! Moisturizers should be a critical part of your skin care ammunition. Anti-aging products may also be something you want to look into.

After the age of 50, your skin becomes something you must care for with serious effort or you could have major health problems. Your skin will heal very slowly, so make sure to eat well, clean cuts and care for it to the maximum extent possible.

The good news is we are living much longer on average. The amazing structure of our skin is such that it can take the extra beating. To get the most out of it, however, you must take care of it early on in life. So, do it!

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com
About the Author:
Receive free skin care advice available at SkinCareTipsDaily.com.
Click here for other unique 'skin' articles.

Tips On Senior Parents Care And Useful Products

Tips On Senior Parents Care And Useful Products
By: kensium solutions

There are lots of new products which are for everyday use & they are helping many senior consumers-still young at heart maintain their daily routines with almost no help from family or caregivers.
After seeing a huge increase in number of Americans reaching their old age, lots of companies are selling an array of products to meet the changing lifestyle needs of senior people from lift chairs to larger display phones for easy reading.
As there is hundred of products available for senior consumers, it is very essential to do detailed research & buy the best products that can help make life's everyday tasks easier for seniors. Many elderly people dread begin placed in a nursing home because they are familiar with the bad reputation. There are good nursing homes, but even if you find one, your loved one will still have some losses, such as their independence, privacy and personal freedom. If someone is elderly, but doesn't yet need constant medical care, it's important that you don't make the decision to send them to a nursing home prematurely. There are other options.

The alternative to a nursing home is an Assisted Living Facilities, popularly known as ALF. These facilities are for people needing assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), but who want to live as independently as possible for as long as they can. Assisted living purpose is to bridge the gap between independent living and nursing homes.

Determining the Level of Independence

For those who are not able to live by themselves, but do not yet require constant care, assisted living centers are a great option. These facilities offer residents help with ADLs such as dressing, laundry, housekeeping, medication, bathing, and eating. A lot of these facilities can provide medical care as well, though this might not be as readily available to residents as it is in a nursing home.

Understanding the Differences

The decision on whether to send your loved one to an assisted living facility or a nursing home hangs on many factors, such as the following.

* Cost: Assisted living is rather pricey because individuals live in apartment-like settings. Nursing homes are cheaper because the elderly live in a more communal space, with little private space.

* Medicare is almost always available for someone in a nursing home. It may not be for someone living in Assisted Living Facility.

* Facilities: Assisted living facilities are focused on individuals. Nursing homes are focused on the collective group.

* Place: While assisted living facility is a place for one or few particular aged at a time, a nursing home houses a lot of patients. The former house an individual who is offered all the help and assistance he or she needs, while the nursing home provides far less individual care.

* Nursing homes are designed to care for people who have many health care requirements, and cannot care for themselves. Assisted living facilities are designed to assist elderly persons who can basically care for many of their personal needs themselves.

* In an assisted living facility, skilled nursing care is not usually available except on an as-needed basis. A nursing home is more like a hospital environment and provides full-scale, skilled nursing care.

* Assisted living facilities are designed to assist people in preparing meals, bathing, dressing or performing household chores. If your loved one is often confused or experiencing memory problems, assisted living may be the answer. If they have a debilitating disease or condition, they might need a nursing home.

The Well Being of Your Loved One

There are many factors to consider when deciding whether to use a nursing home or an assisted living facility, such as cost. However, your main concern should be the well being of your loved one. Besides, there are different ways of obtaining the necessary funds, such as financial aid. If you end up putting your loved one in a situation where they are suffering, all of the effort you might end up investing to resolve the situation will most likely heavily outweigh the money you might have saved.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
For more info, see Long Term Care and Long Term Care. The truth is that muscles and bones get weaker and the home can slowly become a dangerous place. However, making some minor modifications to keep your loved ones safe is a very easy process.

Improving safety indoors

You can’t always prevent falls, but there are many things that you can do to help prevent them. Here are a few ideas:

• Clear floors of clutter – The majority of falls come from having a messy house. Be sure to keep all floors clear. The less of a struggle is it to move around the home, the less chance of falling. Make sure things are within reach, as well.

• Well lit rooms – Just as important as important as having clear floors, make sure things are lit well enough so you can see that the floors are clear. Keep plenty of flashlights around for blackouts, too.

• Safety railings – Grab bars and safety railings can be installed all around the house. Be sure to fix them to the bathtub and next to the toilet. Bed railings can also help keep your loved ones from falling out of bed at night.

• Non-Slip mats – Place non-slip mats underneath rugs and be sure to use them in the bathtub and on stairs.

Improving safety outdoors

Being safe outdoors is just as important as being safe in your home, but there’s not as much you can do to prevent danger. Make sure you assist your loved one by holding their arm when walking. If any roads or sidewalks become wet or icy, be sure to salt or sand them. Using a cane for any uneven ground is also advised.

What to do if they do fall

Not all falls can be prevented, accidents happen. When they do, the first thing you should do is not panic. If you panic, you’ll cause your loved one to panic as well. If they’re not able to get up, cover them with a blanket until help arrives.

Overall, you can’t prevent every fall, accident, or slip. You can, however, prevent the majority of them. The home is the place your loved ones will probably spend the most time in, so it’s the first place you should start.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
John George Senior Housing

Monuments and memorials selection

By: Duran Inci

There are many memorial monument dealers selling headstones to the public. The most important thing in finding a good monument dealer is to know what each one has to offer. There are different kinds of professionals & amateurs of each.
Monument Memorial Headstone Companies
The great majority of monument headstone companies do only one thing; they build and sell headstone memorials to USA. Taking into consideration that this is probably the main business they do, they are often qualified, experienced and knowledgeable when it comes to a headstone. Most of these headstone and memorial monument companies have been around for years handing the company down from one generation to the next.
Professionals
- They have a good knowledge of their headstone monument products.
- A Headstone / Monument Company is the best place to go to if you want a custom headstone made.
- Availability of in stock granite headstone products ready for lettering and carving.
- Good knowledge of the local cemeteries and the rules governing a headstone.
- Usually independently owned and operated.
Amateurs
-Their headstone products can sometimes be priced on the medium to high end.
-Turn around time can vary depending on how busy they are.
-You can sometimes run into a pushy or aggressive sales person.
-May not be open on weekends or evenings when most people can shop.
Considered the new kids on the block, Internet monument dealers are usually not that new to the industry. They are mostly owned by headstone / monument dealers or cemeteries that are using the Internet as a new channel for sales and to broaden their market. Maintaining a presence on the web allows Internet monument dealers to sell at drastically reduced prices due to the low overhead associated with operating a web site. Many people consider the low headstone prices a good trade off to the cons. Internet monument dealers are actually accounting for more sales due to their unimposing format and accessibility.

-You cannot see and touch actual headstone samples of their products.
-Many people are uncomfortable shopping online for a headstone.
-Relatively new sales outlet.

Cemeteries
A cemetery's main field of operation is selling and maintaining grave spaces. Most cemeteries that sell headstone products have a sales staff of "Counselors" who sell headstones as well as burial plots and pre-need burial insurance. There is usually a high turnover rate with sales counselors and their knowledge of headstone products may be somewhat limited. Generally speaking you will pay the most for a headstone if purchased from a cemetery as opposed to any other source. Reason being is their high overhead.

Professionals
-Convenience of ordering a headstone from the same company that maintains your loved one's grave space(s).
-They have direct knowledge of what is acceptable as a headstone.
Amateurs
-Usually the highest prices you will pay for a headstone.
-Salespeople sometimes have inadequate knowledge of the headstone products.
-Have been known for high pressure sales tactics.
-May choose profits over customer service.

Funeral Homes
Funeral directors have the first opportunity to offer the sale of a headstone to a family. Again you are dealing with a source whose primary function is not the manufacturing or selling of headstone memorials. While some funeral directors do know the details of headstone sales, many do not. Their main job is funeral directing, but many include the sell of headstone memorials for extra income. Their knowledge may be somewhat limited. Since most see it as a supplemental income they may not take the time to fully understand all aspects of the headstone industry and therefore cannot provide this knowledge to their customers.
Professionals
-Convenience of ordering a headstone from the same company that also arranges the funeral of your loved one.
-Funeral directors are in many cases compassionate and this makes their families more at ease when making a headstone purchase.
-They usually do not resort to aggressive sales tactics.
Amateurs
-Many do not posses proper knowledge about the headstone industry and headstone products.
-Headstone pricing can be on the medium to high end.
-Accessibility can be low considering their first priority is planning funerals.

Pre-need Sales Counselors
Pre-need sales counselors are hired by cemeteries and funeral homes to sell pre-need burial and funeral insurance policies. In addition they also sell pre-need funeral and cemetery merchandise such as headstone and cremation products. Their primary focus is to make sales. Many of them have backgrounds as sales reps for a wide variety of businesses. Their knowledge about headstone products is usually on the low end. There is normally a high turnover rate with pre-need counselors as is the case with sales positions in general.
Professionals
-Convenience of being able to visit your home.
-Affiliated with local funeral homes and cemeteries.
Amateurs
-Limited knowledge of the headstone products they sell.
-Have been known for aggressive sales tactics.
-They will approach you first with a sales call or knock on your door.
-Primary focus is in closing the sale.
As you can see there are a variety of monument dealers each one with pros and cons. The information provided here is to help you in making a decision on whom to purchase a headstone from.
You may also want to ask your friends and family members if they know of a reputable monument dealer. In many cases one will have been referred to a source by a friend or family member who was very satisfied with the monument dealer. This is a very valuable tip especially since the person looking for the dealer may not have a clue where to start.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:

Lincoln Memorial Monuments Company, New Jersey

Hot Tub Therapy

Hot Tub Therapy - How to Lower Blood Pressure With No Medication
By: Karen Naylor

That great feeling you get when you unwind in a hot tub is due to the way your body reacts to the heat and jets of water. Our bodies are pretty complex, and various therapies and drugs can work. Hydrotherapy, or the therapy of water, in a home hot tub is one way to improve our health.

Hot tubs are great for people with high blood pressure (aka hypertension). High blood pressure is usually defined as being greater than 140/90. For those with this condition, time in a spa or hot tub is one extremely beneficial therapy as it can expedite prescribed medicines.

Blood pressure is required for us to survive, and it is produced in 3 different ways: heart rate (how rapidly the heart is beating); how much pressure the heart is pumping against (the more relaxed blood vessels are, the easier it is to pump blood into them, the tighter they are, the harder it is); and the volume of blood in the veins and arteries.

Hydrotherapy in a hottub provides help for high blood pressure because it dilates, or opens up, blood vessels so the heart doesn't have to pump as hard. This lowers blood pressure and it lowers the amount the heart has to work by up to 20%. Your body opens up the blood vessels because it senses that you are getting too warm and the ones near the surface of the skin relax in an attempt to release heat.

This vasodilation (opening up of blood vessels) allows oxygen to travel more easily to places where it normally does not go in great amounts. Because of the fact that oxygen is a necessary part of healing, hot tub hydrotherapy assists healing.

Vasodilation serves another purpose because the blood removes wastes from different parts of the body in the same way that it brings nutrients. When it's been a difficult day and your muscles are bruised, it is often because there is a build up of lactic acid. The quicker blood gets to the muscles to remove the lactic acid, the faster they will feel better. This also allows your muscles to relax.

Don't waste any time - finish your research on which brand of hot tub you can afford to buy, install and operate, and enjoy the amazing health benefits. You won't regret your decision.

NOTE: It is important to make an appointment with your physician before starting or stopping any kind of treatment.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Karen Naylor is a professional researcher who is concerned about finding value for money. The Senior Citizens Advisory Commission of Germantown is currently composed of nine members and three ex-officio members. The commission is restricted to Germantown residents who are 55 years of age and above, and is therefore best placed to cater for the needs of its senior citizens.

As a service to the community, the Senior Citizens Advisory Commission produces a calendar of senior activities and programs that are available to all senior citizens. For example, a sample of events are (but are not restricted to) activities such as Breakfast Clubs, Tai Chi, line dancing classes, drama classes plus a large range of other entertainment and relaxation activities. The list of available activities is certainly very impressive, and caters for most tastes and requirements.

The Commission also researches Senior resources and services. The kind of services that are available range from topics relating to medical, homemaking, and health aid to educational, recreational, and volunteer opportunities. This information is helpful for local seniors and for residents who are planning to move a senior citizen to the greater Memphis area

For those adventurers who still prefer to seek out their own entertainment, Germantown offers a wide range of social centres and outdoor activities. Germantown has two dozen parks, sports complexes and other green spaces, covering more than 700 acres of recreational land. They provide athletic fields and courts, picnic areas, biking/walking trails and playgrounds, reflecting a Parks and Recreation department goal of placing recreational and leisure opportunities within a half mile of every home.

The amenities offered are first class, with a very diverse range of activities and pursuits to keep all ages and interests occupied both mentally and physically. For those looking to see out retirement in surroundings that are not only beautiful, but uplifting as well, could do worse than investigate the Germantown Plantation in Tennessee.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Learn more about the Germantown Plantation senior living community from this excellent website.

Information on Adult Diapers

By: Stefan Rockhaus

Adult diapers are like an under garment worn by those individuals who do not have control over their bladder movements. People who are physically or mentally disabled, and are unable to reach the toilet on time, need to use diapers.

Adult diapers are made up of continuous layers of cloth or towel fabric, or such a material that can absorb liquid. The following are some examples of when adult diapers are used:

• They are used by individuals who do not have any control over their continence.
• By those who are mentally ill.
• Security guards who have to remain on duty for a very long period of time.
• Drivers who are forced to do non-stop driving.
• They are also suitable for astronauts during the time they are in spacecraft.
• Pregnant women, who urinate frequently.
• People who are suffering from injuries, and cannot move from their places.

Cloth diapers are comparatively cheaper than other types of diapers, and they can also be re-used. They are more user-friendly, as they are made up of cotton fabric and are comfortable to wear. These diapers are usually best for people who are mentally or physically disturbed, as they are cheap and biodegradable.

Another type of adult diaper is the disposable diaper that is made up of waterproof cloth on its exterior, and moisture wicking cloth inside. There are many layers of tissue papers inside the moisture wicking cloth, and they are able to soak almost 90cc of liquid. Disposable diapers are more popular than cloth diapers because they can easily be disposed of, and you do not have to wash them again and again. Disposable diapers are made up of such a material that provides full dryness to your skin and keeps it free from rashes. Because of their moisture wicking layer, they are more comfortable to wear. Disposable diapers are more costly than cloth diapers.

Disposable diapers have eliminated the market of the cloth diaper due to their convenience. However, they take a huge amount of processing and their material remains as it is in landfills for various years. This is the reason that some countries have banned the dumping of untreated waste in landfills. Rather, they are incinerated as little residue is left in this way.

These disposable diapers contain various chemicals that are obtained inadvertently during their production, and also deliberately to increase the absorbing capacity. Although it works efficiently to keep the skin dry, it leads to irritation of the skin. But since they can be simply thrown away, people have ignored this disadvantage and to this date, disposable diapers are dominating the market.

Recent techniques have launched hybrid reusable diapers; they are made up of a fashionable pant, which can be reused. These diapers are made up of a material that is fully flushable and compostable to give extra care and comfort to adults as well as to babies.

So, in short we can say that these adult diapers have really been proved beneficial for those who are unable to help themselves.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Stefan Rockhaus writes many health-related articles. Very often depression in the aged is not reported and treated due to the social stigma attached with this condition or due to plain ignorance on part of the family of the elderly person. This not only doesn't help them, but can worsentheir condition and make them susceptible to other ailments...including sometimes suicide.

Also, elderly depression can occur due to the death of a spouse...which increases lonliness. Also, side-effects from certain medicines or due to certain long-term illnesses like diabetes and arthritis can have a profound effect on depression. The depression must be treated as soon as possible. Without fast treatment, it can lead to suicidal tendencies on part of the patient or death from premature heart attack, stroke and other serious diseases. One group known to be at risk from depression in the elderly include widowed women. Others at high risk are those not being able to cope with stress in their lives. Low self-confidence due to diseases like cancer and loss of limb causing disfigurement can easily lead to depression. Many elderly may have a family history of depression and get depressed due to apprehension of dying. Some elderly may have an addiction to alcohol or drugs contributing to their depression.

So, what can be done to help depression in the aged? Counseling and a therapy of antidepressants can help. (note: always see a licensed therapist and physican). The therapist will prescribe antidepressants if they feel they are required. During initial prescriptions of these drugs the patient has to be watched carefully as the side-effects and results of a reaction can be serious. These medicines show their effect over a period of time since they are given in small doses. In fact, it wouldn't hurt to have a medical alertalarm for the depressed person just in case they feel the need to contact emergency personnel.

Psychotherapy is very effective in dealing with depression in the elderly as the patient can share their feelings and insecurities with the therapist. This helps them to identify the main problem and initiates a curative process to overcome depression. Of course, a loving family can help tremendously. Depression is a sensitive issue which, can be treated with love and patience along with therapy and medication.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Ron Rougeaux has written articles which can be seen at his website at: Elderly Help Information and Resources concerning the elderly and aged on subjects of elderly care, abuse, retirement, medical needs, and much more...

How To Chose A Retirement Home

Finding an appropriate retirement home could waste you precious time and money. So make sure you’re ready to plan for this major change. Retirement homes are usually developed as a condominium or a compound of properties, but are these the only options for you? There are five elements that you should consider before buying retirement properties.

1. Location

The setting of the retirement home is important because you will want a home that has good proximity to hospitals, shopping malls, restaurants, post office, veterinarians or police stations, etc. Roam around the area and look for local services that you would need in the future. The location of the retirement homes should benefit both you and your loved ones. Make sure that the area is near your friends and families. Check the availability of traveling options your visitors would come across for future visiting references.

2. Design

- Check to see the construction of the community
- Make sure that your necessities like laundry and common area are provided for
- Checking the width and length of individual rooms to ensure your furniture will fit
- If these furniture does not fit the room, either ask for a larger space or look for other retirement homes
- If you or one of your family members is in a wheel chair, you should check the spaciousness of doors and the corridors

3. Services

It is important to know the features of the retirement homes’ benefits and services. In choosing a perfect retirement home, you should identify your own level of needs. Make a checklist of services you would prefer, like home maintenance, nursing aid, and many more. Also, ask for the cost of each service you would need. This will give you a picture on the total cost for your retirement home.

4. Housing

Independence

This refers to the most common retirement homes available. These are homes that could be within your own apartment or living in community.

Independent living is for the mobile people that could cook for themselves, go shopping alone and could do their own chores. The people in here are mobile and could do their own chores. Although this kind does not provide medical assistance, they are supervised by the management of the facility if anything bad may happen.

Special

A kind of retirement homes that provides you with housing plus services. Although this may cost more, there would be people working for you to feed you, do the shopping for you, and cook for you. There is also personal nursing care in this option. These kinds of retirement homes would provide you with services that depend on your amount of needed help.

CCRC

Continuing care retirement community is a secured compound wherein many seniors live in it. At the end of each day, you find your energy gradually waning as you reach that point wherein you wanted to declare the last part of your work — retirement.

Retirement is when an individual feels like withdrawing from their occupation to find some time for their selves and contemplate on how much he or she has earned or saved.

Everybody needs a time to stop working, reflect back upon the past, and enjoy whatever life has to offer with the individual’s retirement plan or pension staying close behind.

However, the problem of retirement using the typical pensions plans like that of the Social Security; people should start relying on their own savings than the usual way of planning for retirement. This is because the Social Security is gradually losing more assets than it should be gaining in order to adequately supply the much-needed funds of their members.

In fact, the agency asserts that they are paying more than what they collect and they fear that by the year 2010, 76 million people are estimated to reach their retirement age. They estimated that by that time, with all the assets being utilized at exceptional rate, they might only be paying 72% of the expected retirement compensation of the members.

This goes to show that people should try to rely more on their personal savings and other sources of their retirement plans. This will bring about a more balanced view of all the aspects as far as retirement is concerned.

So what are the alternatives to Social Security? Here is a list of the other retirement schemes that you can start planning by now so that by the time you reach your retirement age, you will not solely rely upon your social security retirement benefits.

1. Annuities

These are highly adaptable insurance contracts intended to provide earnings and help you reach financial stability even after you have reached your retirement age.

2. Investments

Saving money is just the beginning. You have to choose ventures that will provide you with greater money over the long period.

Try to look for the “lifestyle mutual fund,” which puts a portion of your money in diversified stocks and the other portion in bonds, and maintains a solid balance between the two.

Another good choice is the target retirement fund. Its portfolio becomes more conservative as you approach retirement age.

3. 401 (k)

Your employer’s 401 (k) or 403 (b0 can be great sources of retirement benefits. Here, the company will deduct a portion of your income and invest the amount on mutual funds, usually on your chosen instrument.

4. Emergency account

Try to move your money automatically each month from your checking account into an account earmarked for unexpected expenses. Aim for a sum that will cover three month’s worth of basics (mortgage, food, utilities, car payments, etc.)

Once you have built this nest egg, you would not have to withdraw from long-term savings if a crisis hits.

There is no secret to building wealth after retirement. You only need to live less than you make and invest the surplus well. When you save money and invest automatically, your retirement would definitely be the best phase in your life where you enjoy relaxation with no financial obligations to worry about.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Robert Thatcher is a freelance publisher based in Cupertino, California. Basic training will introduce you to some very important ideas that you can use to make yourself calmer, more flexible, stronger, and better able to cope with whatever life throws at you. And life throws a lot at a caregiver: much energy and attention goes into making sure that your loved one is safe, calm, clothed, fed, clean, available for doctor’s appointments, comfortable, etc. As the disease progresses, there will be greater demands.

The basic concepts in this chapter will crop up later in more advanced training. You will be able to use them to strengthen yourself even more.

As said earlier, we face two important sets of tasks. One set involves making decisions for and caring for our loved ones. The second set deals with caring for and strengthening ourselves emotionally. Both sets require energy, wisdom, commitment, practice, as well as specific attitudes and behaviors. And both are absolutely necessary.

You may ask, "Why is it important to care for myself emotionally? Shouldn’t this be just about taking care of my loved one? What right do I have to think of myself? Isn't that selfish? After all, I’m not the one with Alzheimer’s!" The answer: if we burn out our own emotional batteries, we run out of energy to care for others-and then what good are we as caregivers? Not much. We need to learn self-care, as well as the art of R and R (Resting and Recharging).

Remember the Bible story of creation? After working nonstop for six days, even God rested on the seventh. Even God. Why did God rest? Maybe He needed to recharge before going back to work. And if even God needed to rest and recharge, how about us simple humans? How about even you? Think about our modern marvels. A jet engine is a powerful workhorse-but you would not think of constantly running it at full throttle. It would burn out. How about even human, nonmechanical you?

So, the first and perhaps most important point here is that our ability to care for others and our ability to care for ourselves are actually two sides of the same coin. We need to be able to attend to both needs. This makes it incredibly important for us to learn to take care of ourselves. If we can’t keep ourselves in good emotional shape, how can we hope to be there for someone who needs us?

In order to take care of another person we MUST also be able to take care of ourselves.

So, how can we take care of ourselves and be good caregivers as well?

Fortunately, there are many available theories, tools, and techniques we can use to care for ourselves. Some approaches work on dealing with stress in a constructive way. Others deal with ways to strengthen ourselves in general.

In this chapter, we will look at a way to keep stress from taking over our lives-even the extraordinary stress of being a caregiver for a person with Alzheimer’s. One powerful approach to this problem involves understanding how our minds work to create our own personal states of well-being or distress-and then using that knowledge to strengthen our thinking. And that’s the one we will be looking at in this chapter.

Be on the lookout for the next section of this series.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
With more than 28 years of professional experience as a psychologist, consultant, adjunct professor, and coach, Mark Matloff, Ph.D. brings his skills and passion to helping people and agencies improve and thrive. It is something to that everybody has something to worry about sometime. Everyone gets old in each and every family, and at the very least, most people have a relative of an advanced age. This stage poses a lot of uncertainty and behavioral change that the person himself/herself is unaware and can hardly control.

1. Theory on Behavioral Change Among Elderly

Each of life’s stages are characterized by unprecedented behavioral change. Your preferences in food, color, clothing style, company, music genre, etc are mostly affected. In a latest study, it was found that people periodically change in their preferential course of life, including aspirations approximately every 7 years. Just as how complex this change in the early life are as complicated when one turns into old age. People may find elderly people annoying but these behaviors are a result of various physiological processes occurring in their body as they approach such age. Many may have seemed to develop resentment on an activity that they previously enjoy. They develop resistance to many things such as loud sounds, discomfort on almost anything, incontinence, and apparent withdrawal from the society. Understanding these queer behaviors and how they arise will provide you valuable information that you can use in tailoring the kind of care needed for your elders.

2. Tips on Caring for Seniors

While geriatric care managers are the expert in the provision of health care among elderly, everyone can empower themselves to be equipped with the right training and knowledge in geriatric (referring to old, elderly) and better assist aging members of your household such as your grandparents and parents, and older siblings. Below are the lists of useful tips on how you can better assist our elders as they embark on this stage of life with full of challenges and uncertainties and assist elderly on protecting themselves, physically (health matters), financially and legally on everything that concerns your assets.

3. Be Completely Absorbed

People who have had experience taking care older adults, especially the caregivers and other geriatric care managers, considers giving a “piece” of yourself into a health care program designed for such individuals. More than ever, accompanying them in this critical stage provides them with enough relief with all dramatic changes they are experiencing physically.

4. Secure Health Care Insurance

As you age, you will be more prone to diseases. Your body will become more vulnerable to diseases. You tend to develop illness that do not normally occur in healthy, young people. Because of this, more and more people are paying closer attention to the quality of medical or health insurance they enroll to and make sure that it covers programs expected when one reach old age. Review carefully your health insurance policy and make sure you understand the entire terms of service programs stipulated in it.

5. Financial Care for Elders

As we reach retirement age, you will be more or less dependent upon your retirement pensions unless you have acquired a business of your own. This leaves you little flexibility in the amount of income or budget you will get for a month but this very same financial rigidity empowers or teaches you to limit your spending to an amount that is appropriated for you for a specific length of time.

6. Elder Care Law

The government dutifully protects senior citizens’ rights and extends support for elderly who still can manage to take care of their own and during the time that they need other else’s supervision in the performance of daily activities such as cooking, bathing, feeding, taking medications and leisurely walks, etc. It is important to note that legal provisions vary from state to state and that the help of a professional family law or elder care law attorney should be consulted.

7. Relegating Power of Attorney

Power of attorney is a legal right whereby an individual is granted certain rights to act as a representative of someone in the performance of a certain legal actions or decisions. Elder individuals become less able to dealing with affairs concerning their assets, including financial, monetary, and estate affairs. It is about giving someone the authority to do the affairs for you especially when you reach the stage where you can no longer perform these activities yourself.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
For more great retirement related articles and resources check out http://www.topretirement.com

What Is Alzheimer’s Disease?

By: Gray Rollins

Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that robs individuals of their memories, ability to recognize their loved ones or even to complete simple tasks for themselves, but there are treatments available to help slow the course of Alzheimer’s disease and researchers are working hard to find a cure.

Alzheimer’s disease is considered a condition of the elderly affecting mostly those over the age of 65. While there are so called early onset cases that occur in younger adults they are rare. 23,000 people die each year in the United States from Alzheimer’s disease. It is the leading cause of dementia, making it the eighth leading cause of death among older Americans. Though there is currently no cure for the condition, understanding the progress of the disease can help researchers, care-giving family members and those afflicted.

The disease is hallmarked by atrophy, or shrinking, of the cortical tissues in the brain. In people with Alzheimer’s disease nerve cells become bunched together forming tangled webs of brain tissue filaments (neurofibrillary tangles) and near these tangles patches of cellular debris, called senile plaques, are found. Plaques are made up of dead cells and proteins. It is believed that these brain abnormalities cause a disruption of the electrical impulses in the brain. As more and more tangles and plaques collect in the brain the body receives fewer and fewer messages from it and the person’s ability to function deteriorates.

According to Elder Rage author and radio host Jacqueline Marcell the warning signs of the affliction include: memory loss, difficulty performing familiar tasks, problems with language, disorientation to time and place, poor or decreased judgment, problems with abstract thinking, misplacing things, changes in mood or behavior, changes in personality and loss of initiative. “You don’t need to have a doctorate degree to know something is wrong,” Ms. Marcell writes in her blog, “but you do need a doctor who can diagnose and treat (Alzheimer’s) properly.”

Right now the aim of treatment is to slow or mask the cognitive deterioration caused by the disease and to increase the brains ability to think, recognize, perceive and judge. Treatment is also helpful in reducing the behavioral problems associated with the more advanced stages of the disease. The side effects for the most commonly used medications: Aricept, Cognex, Exelon and Namenda can include nausea and vomiting, liver damage, psychiatric disturbances, weight loss, tremor, sore muscles, fatigue, dizziness and urinary tract problems. Razadyne is the exception; though there are risks for nausea and vomiting and a few other problematic symptoms, no serious side effects have been reported.

Some treatments work better than others and differently for different patients, so every patient needs to have their symptoms and treatment responses reevaluated frequently. Flexible, supervised care from a knowledgeable physician is of paramount importance.

Alzheimer’s disease isn’t curable but there are treatments that can slow its progress and promising research that may one day lead to a cure. Understanding the stages of the disease and its progression can help those who are afflicted, their loved ones and researchers ensure the best treatment now and promote hope for the future.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Gray Rollins is featured writer for ForAlzheimers.com. You want retire at an age when you are not too old to enjoy your golden years.

This is the point in life when you look back at your achievements. If you feel satisfied with what you have accomplished so far, you will get to focus more on what it is that you exactly want to do with the rest of your life - which you did not have time for when you were young and busy raising kids and money.

You are probably thinking of taking up a forgotten hobby, or go traveling in a motor home, or get a tan at a lovely beach where the sun shines year-round.

Studies show that more and more retirees are thinking about going abroad. They may have an old vacation spot in mind where they are considering settling in once they retire.

However, there are still some who choose to stay in the country and spend their retirement with their families in the States.

Whether you choose to stay in the country or out of it, here are a couple of tips on how you can enjoy retirement and your leisure years with your family:

>> Settle your finances first.

This is the biggest concern that retirees have. It is unfortunate that not everyone thinks about this aspect of "growing up" while they are young and healthy.

Thus, when nearing retirement, they tend to be a bit apprehensive about finances because they did not have ample time to prepare.

It is better if you start planning for retirement thoroughly, and do it the earliest time possible. The more preparations you have, the more likely you will get to enjoy yourself when retirement comes.

Take the following scenario as an example: If you save $100 per month, in 5 years, you will earn approximately $6,800. In 20 years, this could increase to about $41,000.

There are some other factors and rate of return percentages to consider, but this is basically how it goes.

The above example just shows that if you prepare early, the more you will earn by investing in a sound retirement plan.

>> Prepare early.

Do not let the anxiety of retiring sneak up on you by preparing early. Once you have gotten your financial worries out of the way, you can proceed to the next step - which is enjoying your retirement years with your family.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Henry Clark can show you how to make the most of your retirement years. Are you torn between retiring to your golden years or continuing to work for a few more? Here are a few tips to make your decision a little less painful.

1. Consider Your Age

If you are in the 55 to 65 age range, retirement will already seem attractive to you. First of all consider your age. Realistically speaking, we only have limited number of years on this earth. Look at what you would still like to accomplish with those remaining years. Would you like to spend time going around the world? Or do you have any goals you wish to fulfill if it weren’t for the daily grind of work? If that is so then you can factor in these goals and lay out a time table for your retirement and activities afterwards.

Another age-related issue to consider is your ‘actual age.’ You actual age is a measurement to verify how old your body really is. Have ever wondered why some people look about 5 years younger than they really are? This could be because their bodies really are of that age. The factors that determine this aging are genetics, health habits, diet and others. If you feel that your physical age is way beyond working, you may choose to retire.

2. Health

Is your health preventing you from being productive in the workforce? Or is your health making work more uncomfortable for you as time passes by? You may want to check with a doctor for a total health evaluation before considering continuing with work

3. Family

Some people will want to spend more time with their families as the twilight years approach. You may want to factor this into your decision to retire.

4. Finances

Will you be financially capable of sustaining your lifestyle well after retirement? If your retirement savings are not up to par with your spending lifestyle after retirement, you may want to stick it out with work for a little while longer. You also have to consider the fact that some retirement plans become more attractive if you retire later. But if you have saved up enough finances to tide you over those needs and enough to cover unexpected expenses such as medical fees, etc. as well as expenses for your planned vacation trips and other goals, you will want to retire early.

Also consider the fact that many people who retire find out that life without an occupation will turn out to be very boring. You may want to keep in touch with your employer so that he or she may offer jobs that you can do on part-time basis such as consultancy, filling in for those on vacation, etc.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Henry Clark can show you how to make the most of your retirement years. This is because when they reach their retirement age, all they have to do is to relax and enjoy life together with the financial benefits that they themselves have tried to save little by little.

That is why, when it comes to retirement and the benefits that can be derived from it, people should take the matter seriously.

Because of the growing trend in retirement issues and programs, one area of retirement is gradually taking the limelight. This is known as the continuing care retirement community or the CCRCs.

Continuing Care Retirement Communities are consistently gaining some recognition because of the features and benefits that retirees get from them.

To know more of the CCRC, here is a list of the benefits that a retiree can derive from them:

1. Continuing Care Retirement Community provides various housing projects and selection for their members. With a wide variety of choices, people are opting to choose a house that will correspond to their lifestyle and personality.

These housing privileges are not just mere housing projects, in which likes of them are usually made from low-quality materials. However, those that were provided by CCRC, the houses are surely apt for the family. In addition, these are, indeed, low cost houses.

2. The CCRC also offers optimum security, specialized services, and support to their residents. In this way, people who live in the area have peace of mind because they are surrounded by tranquil setting.

Moreover, in CCRC, people are entitled to enjoy three stages of care made available within the context of the Continuing Care Retirement Community.

3. The CCRC have programs that are always available (round-the-clock) to their customers. This means that the residents or their customers can readily avail the services that they need, in which all of the services are all focused on the well-being and health of the people.

No wonder why more and more retirees are aiming to obtain their new homes from the CCRC. Surveys show that approximately 625,000 elderly people are planning to have their own houses through this program.

4. However, throughout the duration of a lifetime, the hearing function of our ears become worn out and less effective. In fact, one of three adults over the age of 65 has a hearing loss and half of seniors over the age of 75 have a hearing loss. Such loss is commonly due to over-exposure to noise, heredity or both.

The signs of hearing loss is normally relatively easy to detect:

1) If you notice everyone sounds muffled.
2) It is difficult to understand words.
3) You request others to speak more slowly, clearly or loudly.
4) Often need to turn up the volume on your TV or radio.

If you suffer from any of the above, combined with a desire to withdraw from conversations or avoid social settings, it is highly likely that you are suffering from a loss of hearing.

Most hearing loss results from damage to the cochlea ( a coiled structure in the inner ear responsible for hearing ). This loss is usually a result of prolonged exposure to loud noises of 85 decibel or higher. A decibel is the unit used to measure degrees of loudness and is often abbreviated to dB.

Other common causes of hearing are:

1) Ear infections.
2) Abnormal bone growths.
3) Tumors of the outer or middle ear.
4) Ruptured ear drums.

Other non-age related causes for deafness include Auditory Neuropathy, Meniere's Disease, Noise Ostosclerosis and Usher's Syndrome.

There are three basic types of hearing loss:

Type # 1 - Conductive Hearing Loss

This occurs when sound is not conducted efficiently to the middle ear, which may be caused by fluid, earwax, infection, foreign matter or malformation of the middle or outer ear.

Type # 2 - Sensorineural Hearing Loss

This condition occurs when there is damage to the inner ear ( cochlea ) or to the nerve pathways from the inner ear to the brain. Disease, birth injury, drugs or genetic syndromes can also be causes of Sensorineural hearing loss. Additional causes may include noise exposure, viruses, head trauma, aging and tumors.

A person suffering from this type of hearing loss may exhibit a lack of speech comprehension.

Type # 3 - Mixed Hearing Loss

Sometimes a person may suffer from conductive hearing loss combined with a Sensorineural hearing loss. This type of hearing loss is known as mixed hearing loss.

A person can have a loss of hearing in one ear or in both ears. The degree of the severity of hearing loss in each ear may be equal or disparate. The loss of hearing can either occur suddenly or over a long period of time.

Some people suffer from hearing losses that fluctuate and their condition may worsen or improve erratically. This is usually caused by an ear infection causing conductive hearing loss.

If you suspect you have a hearing problem, you should consult your health specialist to get a professional diagnosis and appropriate treatment for your condition.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Find out more about General Health at healthandfinesse.com

Mobility Electric Scooters - Freedom For The Elderly

Mobility Electric Scooters - Freedom For The Elderly
By: Dr. Larry A. Johnson, D.C.

Being confined to a bed or in a chair may not be exactly what you had envisioned during your last years. Find freedom and independence again with electric mobility scooters.

There would not be much excitement in life if you had to spend it sitting in a chair or lying in a bed every day. Relying on somebody else to perform simple tasks for you, such as getting a drink of water, can make you feel like you are nothing but a burden to others. If you or someone you love needs a boost maybe electric scooters are what you should be investigating.

It wasn't too long ago that the elderly and handicapped relied exclusively on others for their care and entertainment. But with the recent advancements in scooters many seniors or disabled people can now grab hold of some of their freedom again. Cheap electric scooters can allow the formerly bed-ridden or chair-ridden to travel as if they actually had legs that worked again. No more depression due to lack of independence. Returned is the ability not only to get yourself a glass of water, but to go out and get the morning newspaper or even take the dog for a walk. Getting out in the fresh air is something that may not have been possible for many without the assistance of electric scooters. Some people think of scooters as belonging in a sports category, but it's all recreation and assistance.

In my neighborhood there is an elderly gentleman that cruises down the sidewalk with his control lever in one hand and his dog leash in the other. Without his electric scooter there would be no fresh air for him. There would be no walking the dog or talking with the friendly neighbors he runs into (figuratively, not literally). He's free once again to roam the streets with his best friend Fido. What a great feeling that must be, to get out of the house for a short time each day when it used to be impossible. There's practically nowhere a person can't go these days with the help of these magnificent little vehicles.

There are a wide variety of scooters available to the public these days. Besides electric types there are gas, utility and foldable models. They all have their advantages under certain conditions. Kids love the compact and easy-to-handle foldable or Razor scooters. They are very cheap, often under $100, and make getting places a snap. They are also very inexpensive to operate once you own one. Kids use their scooters as motorcycles, but a scooter is so much more than a miniature motorcycle, they are a means of obtaining freedom for the elderly.

Gas powered scooters are more powerful, allowing the driver to travel further distances away from home. There are even larger touring models manufactured for the sole purpose of long distance travel. The touring types are bigger and heavier, and they consume a little more fuel, but they allow for long distance travel unlike the foldable, utility or mobility models.

Utility scooters are becoming very popular with different types of institutions such as school campuses, professional sports stadiums, golfers and big businesses. Have you ever seen a person driving a cart in a school parking lot, going from car to car looking for parking violations? In all probability they were driving utility scooters. And golf carts are just a modified version of this type. It's hard going to any large institution these days without running into a utility scooter of some type or another.

The electric models are very versatile and are used to perform many functions. They are used in the foldable and utility types most often. But perhaps where they perform their greatest task is in assisting the elderly or disabled. It wasn't too long ago that these mobility vehicles had a very limited distance, but with the advancement of batteries and their capacities they can now be used for an entire day before needing to be recharged. They can be driven all day and then plugged in at night for recharging while everyone is fast asleep. Then in the morning they are ready to perform their duties again for another day. What a wonderful gift to those that no longer have the ability to get around on their own.

Mobility electric scooters are different than the gas powered models. For one thing they will have at least 3, but usually 4 wheels. The reason for the extra wheels is stability. It's not too hard to lose your balance on a 2-wheel variety, but it's almost impossible with 4-wheels. With the extra stability that 4 wheels adds it makes the mobility electric scooters very safe for travel in and around the home. These handicapped models are bigger and heavier than other types which allows for better control and more storage. Electric scooters are here to stay. If chosen carefully it can become one of the best purchases ever made for the handicapped, disabled or elderly.

Article Source: http://www.articlesnatch.com

About the Author:
Dr. Larry A. Johnson, D.C. has a special fondness for electric scooters. Spreading the word about the wonderful world of mobility electric scooters is one of his missions.
