Fines threat for credit text messages

Firms face raids and fines of up to £500,000 for sending unsolicited text messages about credit or compensation. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) said tackling the issue was a "high priority". Typical messages claim recipients are entitled to money, promise to write off debts or find a loan, or suggest accident compensation can be claimed. But in many cases, the products they are selling can actually make people financially worse off. The ICO said it was investigating several cases at the moment, and had identified certain companies to target. The Consumer Credit Counselling Service (CCCS) charity is running a campaign against unsolicited texts, and believes the messages cynically target vulnerable people. Late-night texts Sarah Stocks, from Plymouth, said she started to be bombarded by texts after enquiring online about applying for a loan. She decided not to go ahead with the application, but by then, her contact details were already being used. "I got [texts] all the time, sometimes four or five a day. You know, you're lying in bed reading, about to switch off the light, and you get a text at 10.30pm. But when you pick it up it says 'Do you want a loan for £5,000?'," she said. It is asking people to tweet every time they get an unwanted spam text. Credit Card 2.0 Technology Aids in Fraud and Theft Prevention

You may not think of a credit card — a piece of plastic with a magnetic strip — as the most technologically advanced device but a company is taking credit cards beyond this level to improve fraud prevention and even allow for multiple accounts on one card.

Ars Technica reports that Dynamic Inc., showed off some of its Credit Card 2.0 technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, including a card with a special magnetic strip programmed in real time and cleared of data after use (the Dynamic Credit Card). Other cards produced by the company include: a card that requires the users to type in a code on the card itself before use; a card that lets the users chose to use a credit card's points program for a purchase; and a card that brings multiple credit accounts onto one piece of plastic. Here's how Ars Technica describes the device:

The technology is impressive. The cards look and feel much like existing credit cards, and can be kept in your wallet and bent without harming the internal electronics. The difference is that an empty screen replaces a section of the numbers on the card's face, and you have to tap in a key using five built-in buttons before making a purchase. The LCD screen is then filled with a unique credit card number, and the magnetic strip on the back is coded with that number for use in the transaction. Once the transaction is over, the numbers leave the face of the card, and the magnetic strip returns to its blank state.

With this technology, a stolen card cannot be effectively used — unless the thief has your code — and credit card numbers are meaningless because they change with each use.

Cards using this technology, you may have guessed, need to be powered in some way. Ars Technica reports that the cards are run on batteries with a three year lifespan. It also notes that some pilot programs using the cards are already underway.

Fidel Castro has died more than once. That's if you believe the internet rumors that have the Cuban dictator croaking every couple years. But now the latest picture making the rounds as "evidence" could actually be malicious.
Business Insider blogger Joe Weisenthal first noticed the picture making the rounds via Twitter Tuesday morning:
There's a rumor going around, mostly on Twitter it seems, that Fidel Castro is dead.
This rumor goes around every few years or months, and there doesn't seem to be anything new to it, except that this picture is apparently floating around.
Here it is:
Euronews noted that same picture, however, could be more than just a harmless prank:
The latest information suggests that it is not a rumour but a pure and simple hoax aimed at spreading a dangerous trojan computer virus.
It is not the first time that Castro's death, an obviously attractive headline, has been used to spread a virus.
Castro was declared dead last August in an email with the subject "Fidel is Dead", that infected computers once the false video report had been clicked on.

Black Friday Scam Alert: Beware of Facebook and iTunes Emails

Be on the alert for what may look like a credible email from Facebook or Apple's iTunes as it could be a scam. The iTunes scam is likely to be playing on Black Friday discount emails by advertising a special offer, while the Facebook email accuses users of violations and threatens deactivation of the account.
First, more details on the iTunes email. CNET reports that email claiming to be from iTunes holds a compressed zip file that when opened will give hackers access to your computer:
The email apparently offers recipients $50 (£32) and claims they need to open an attached file to access their certificate code. In fact the attachment is a file called Mal/BredoZp-B. It opens a security loophole on Windows PCs and allows hackers to remotely capture passwords and other information. It also slows down the computer and hides some files.
Although such malware can be removed with the use of widely available anti-malware tools, damage can be done in the meantime.
The Facebook scam is what the Daily Mail calls "the cleverest Facebook scam yet" as it plays off of the site's security procedures to look authentic:
The scam comes in the form of an email accusing the user of a violation for insulting or annoying another Facebook users – and saying that their account will be deleted in 24 hours.
Naturally, at this point, the email requires Facebook login details and – for 'authentication' purposes – parts of a person's credit card details.
The email links to a fake Account Disabled page, which asks for a large number of personal details, including credit card details.
Sophos Naked Security blog reports the emails as "completely bogus" because no social media site would ever asked for "financial information [or] request login details". Once they have hijacked your Facebook account, they will use your information to spread the scam around to your friend and similarly your webmail to send it to email contacts, according to Hoax Slayer.

In recent months, Hoax Slayer reports, similar Facebook scams posing to be from Facebook security have been circulating, including one that claims your account was compromised and if a response is not received within 12 hours the account would be suspended.
The best advice if you think you receive one of these emails is to not open it in the first place — immediately delete — and if you do open it, avoid clicking into any links within the email.
