Roadside Rescue: {Repurposed}

Remember these old crates I found for FREE on the side of the road??

Well, I would like to share just one of the many projects I've completed with them so far!

I had a blank wall in my dining area that I have been wanting to fill for some time now and I wanted to do something personal and rustic, creative and for no money! I'm not too picky am I? :)

After browsing Pinterest (of course!) I came across this Farmer's Market sign.

How appropriate for us since we are new gardener wannabees!

Just our style and perfect for a Kitchen!

After several hours yanking and pulling, prying and yelling I dismantled the crates, leaving me four sides.

Then, I stenciled the words on using dollar store stencils and white paint I already had on hand.

No cost there!

After some distressing with my palm sander and attaching some sawtooth hangers on the back they were ready to hang.

I just love all the little imperfections, rusty nails and character.

It fits in nicely and I'm loving it!

I've mentioned before how we are going to get chickens soon, well, first I said last summer, then fall, and now the plan is Spring! The coop is about half finished, and we are gathering information, tips and tricks anywhere we can, one of which is from my new friend, Jessica!

She was gracious enough to introduce me to all 13 of her friendly chickens and I loved every minute of it! She even sent me home with some beautiful, fresh eggs!

It made me even more excited to add some chickies to our family!

Not only are chickens fun to have around, when provided sunlight and space to peck around their eggs provide much more nutrients than traditional Supermarket eggs including:

1/3 less cholesterol

1/4 less saturated fat

2/3 more vitamin A

Two times more omega-3 fatty acids

Three times more vitamin E

Seven times more beta carotene

not to mention studies showing all that extra Vitamin D we are all desperately lacking!

It's very rare that I go on a thrifting adventure with certain items in mind. I mean, I'm always looking for the same kind of things, ie antiques, vintage items and other unique treasures, however, this time I was in search of vintage sheets. I always admire their beautiful floral patterns and colors, but can never quite bring myself to buy them every time I see them for fear it will sit in my stash for years taking up space and never be used!

That is until I found this fabulous idea using vintage sheets on the really fun blog, Diary of a Quilter.

This banner was made using all vintage sheets! yay! I love it. I now have license to buy every vintage sheet I come across... :)

Not only did I hit the jackpot with how many vintage sheets I found, here are a few other treasures.

I was ecstatic when I recently came across the blog, Frugally Sustainable . The blog's author, Andrea together with her family, live their lives much like we would like to someday, sustainably. When she talks about why they live the way they do she says,

"Together with my family, we are retracing our steps; in essence going backward so we can move forward."

They live their life unconventionally, taking a step back in time to when we all hung our clothes out to dry on the line and almost everyone grew their own vegetables in their garden.

This brings me to today.

I ask myself, what little step can I take to live a more sustainable lifestyle?

Well, why not make my own household cleaners!

I'd like to fill you in on a little secret the soap making people won't tell you...

You can make your own household cleaners easily and with no chemicals!

Now, I know what you're saying, "Kara I barely have the time to clean my house, let alone make my own soap to do it!" Well, I'm here to tell you you can!

With a little help from Andrea's blog you can make all your basic cleaners with just 6 ingredients:

1. Borax

2. Baking Soda

3. Super Washing Soda

4. White Vinegar

5. Castile Soap

6. Anti-septic essential oils

(ie: tea tree oil, cinnamon leaf, lavender, eucalyptus, lemon grass, sweet orange, clove)

Disinfecting Spray Recipe

I put all my liquid cleaners in spray bottles I bought from the dollar store!

Toilet bowl cleaner recipe

Essentials oils can be expensive, however, if you buy just a couple such as tea tree and lavender you can use them in all your cleaners and with just a few drops used for each bottle, they will last you quite some time.

I have found the cheapest way to buy liquid Castile soap is through Amazon.

Liquid laundry Soap Recipe

I store my homemade liquid laundry soap in old, empty spring water jugs I use for my Kombucha! Frugally Sustainable's recipe for liquid laundry soap made me 3 1/2 gallons!

I've been antsy lately with this cold, cold Michigan weather! I feel like I have so many projects waiting to be tackled, but all require painting.

In the meantime, I'm filling up space with all sorts of junky finds!

When I came across these chairs it really made my day. They are actually old church chairs--thank goodness most of us have cushions under our butts now! :)

I'm always drawn to old suitcases, especially the floral ones like these ones I found on a thrifting adventure last summer.

New Year, New Pickins!

Hello! and happy New Year! It's the beginning of the year, so I thought, why not start it out with some fun and thrifty finds!

It's tough this time of year with no garage sales and such, but I have still been having a fun time searching for treasures at thrift stores and antique malls. Here's a few of my findings!

I found these 2 fantastic galvanized wash tubs for $5 each! I love anything with a farmhouse feel, so these fit right in! I also found this pillow for less than it would cost me to make it, how can you turn that down? It looks great in my breezeway, sitting on my DIY bench which I brought inside for the winter, along with my picket fence roadside rescue!

I have been looking at this ammunition box for some time now trying to decide if I should buy it. I wasn't quite sure what I would do with it, but I guess I was in a just go with it mood that day, so it came home with me! Sometimes I just figure if I can't stop looking at it, there's must be some sort of potential to it.

Once I got it home, I realized what this box will be! Stood up on it's side, it will be perfect to put shelves in and display in my space at the Barn Market beginning again in April!

I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Years and I'm looking forward to a fantastic year filled with antiques, treasure hunts and organic gardening. I hope you will follow along on my adventures!

2011: Year in Review

Year 2011 is coming to a close. Lots of fun things happened this year in our family and with Hobbies of a Homemaker, so I thought I would take a little time to reflect.

2011 started out with a new tradition of making a new years resolution. I always have the best intentions, but this year we really wanted to make a point to change something in our lives for the better.

If you know Brett and I very well, you know we have a tendency to avoid answering phone calls. It's not that we are trying to avoid people, it really just boils down to the fact that we both are just terrible phone talkers. This year we changed that. We decided to pick up the phone and it's changed us for the better. I'm thinking our friends and family like us a little better now too!

I wrote my first post for Hobbies of a Homemaker this year, not thinking I would have enough to say about my crafts and our old school life to get me this far! :)

April came and with it came a little space for me at Not So Shabby and the birth of my canning jar soap dispensers.

Throughout the Spring, you all got to hear all about my battle with candida and our new found fascination with raw milk and all things organic!

You reveled with us in all the fun of growing our first vegetables in our garden and all the joys that came with it!

Never thought I would be flinging organic manure!

Summer provided us with lots of fantastic thrifting adventures and picker's paradise

We took another step toward back to the basics and left our microwave behind for good!

I had adventures in soap making and numerous projects completed including some of my favorites

I finished off the year with a new adventure selling my creations and meeting some like-minded crafty ladies at the Kenowa Barn Market.

What a year filled with new adventures in antiques and organic food!

Keeping with tradition, our resolution for 2012 will be in line with our back to the basics mentality. Another step for us to simplify this year is moving out the TV and drastically limiting internet usage!

DIY {Christmas}

After attempting to make homemade soap for the first time a few months ago, my bible study girls and I decided to tackle it again to give as Christmas gifts!

The hard part is done, although I do believe we can call ourselves pros now. The only thing left to do is wrap it up. I wanted to try to do it a little creatively and of course thrifty, so naturally I booked it to the dollar store!

That is where I found these tins, 3/$1. Perfect!

I brought it home, brushed on modge podge and applied a piece of my brown floral wrapping paper on top.

Finished off with a bow from vintage satin ribbon, this little package just makes me smile!

Creative Christmas Wrapping

There's one thing I absolutely love about Christmas a little more than the shopping and snow and what not and that's wrapping. I know, it's a job most people don't enjoy doing, but it's a joy and quite frankly a challenge for me to wrap presents with either what I have at home or very cheaply mostly from the dollar store or thrift store.

This year, I chose some natural floral and red plaid wrapping paper from our local dollar tree. Have I ever mentioned how much I love dollar tree? I mean, don't get me wrong my local gals, my loyalty belongs to Keegstra's, but seriously have you ever been to dollar tree? If not, you need to swing by sometime. They seem to have everything!

I paired the paper with some vintage satin ribbon found at the thrift store for 25 cents!

A little scrap piece of burlap, the red ribbon and finished with a toilet paper tube flower!

I got the inspiration for this package and the toilet paper flower from a mom's group I went to and this blog, Life of a Modern Mom!

May this encourage you to spend a little time enjoying your Christmas wrapping. My hope is that you may even find it therapeutic with a little free time, the soft glow of your Christmas tree lights and the spirit filled anticipation of the birth of the babe in the manger!

Decking the Halls

Although we don't have our Christmas tree yet, we are well on our way to full out Christmas around our house. Shopping is in full swing, and the Christmas decor is slowly making it's appearance, starting with these trees! Remember these crates from one of my roadside rescues? Well, here is the first project of many they will be used for!

I was so excited when I found this idea last year for topiary trees made from tomato cages and garland! How easy is that?

I dug out a couple tomato cages and secured them at the top with floral wire.

Then I just wrapped dollar tree garland around and around. Each of my trees required 6 rolls of garland if you're interested in making your own!

Complete with lights, these babies shine!

A big thanks to Al Bowman who so generously placed these crates out by the road with a free sign! :)

Continuing the Christmas spirit with some 50 cent ice skates and an old wooden ladder!

This star was on our barn when we bought our house. I thought it was perfect for our Christmas decor! Who doesn't love a rusty metal star with old lighting? :)

Our plain jane bookcase gets a fun makeover!

a little vintage sheet music, some modge podge, a couple episodes of Brother's and Sister's, some peace and quiet during nap time and viola!

it could use a few more accessories, but for now I'm calling it good!

I found this grapevine birdcage at the thrift store and I just love it! Caden loves it too, he is constantly asking me to take it down so he can kiss the bird that is inside!
