fear of calendars. gil corral. 2003

I painted this piece in 2003. It has to do with my observation of how tied in, and to some extent, beholden our culture is to the calendar — time stuff, clock stuff. I’m always amazed at how most of our civilization just falls inline with this time measurement thing, rarely questioning it, and even more infrequently, transcending it. I get the larger natural rythmn of things: tides, day, night, seasons…all that. I just don’t get “morning commute” for your “work week” when everyone and their grandmother react to their alarm clocks roughly around the same time. Make and drink the proverbial same pot of coffee, bump car asses with our neighbors as we all pull out of our driveways at the same time, then collectively race to our time ruled workplace or other time structure. I often wonder what the birds on the telephone wires think as they watch our insipid ritual — like we’re the ones on exhibit in a zoo.

Calendar year: time passing, economics, insurance, future, 401k, birthday, birthday parties, meetings, past, appointments, goals, future, past, funeral, funding, forecast, past, obligations, future, holidays, getting older, botox, birth, life insurance policy, resolution, retirement, agenda, goals, future, past.

Fear of Calendars is painted on a partly collaged October 2003 desk calendar. A desk calendar I doodled on during my work week/ desk/sales job.
Somewhere on this page was the date Elliott Smith committed suicide, or died, totally bumming me out. There also dates with dentist / therapy appointments, deadlines, product codes, etc.

The painting’s focal point is a man kneeling worshiping the Aztec Mayan calendar, which is painted and superimposed over the collaged desk calendar. I also included a box of Animal Crackers in the painting.

I was not aware of the 2012 Mayan prophecy when I painted this — again, I was interested in exploring the idea of this powerful ruler of human life..time.

As I sat back and reflected on this painting January 1st, 2012, I couldn’t help but feel that this piece of work has a frequency also aligned with the 2012 prophecy. It’s an interesting circumstance of converging concepts (sorry about the three c’s). My observation of the expansive experience of life somehow being widdled down to a square on a graph with a number on it, incrementaly attempting to make all moments understandable, accounted for, and reducing the possibility of surprise.

January 1, 2012 took partial ownership of this painting, in its own way. A way I hadn’t conceived of or attempted to express, so I really don’t have any words to try to explain this other component. I don’t know. It’s relevance may seem obvious, but it’s inception contained only part of its story. I find this interesting, I am also curious as to how much more of a story it will unveil.

the spirit family reunion

oh man.  sometimes things just come together in the dreamiest fashion.  and this is one of those times.   our beloved spirit family reunion is headlining the new year’s eve show here at the hogfarm!  they will be joined by our equally beloved brownbird (reunion-style with the robinsons joining dave and morgan eve), and our beloved (again) WAH and the traveling trees.  AND our beloved pals dave noyes and kelly nesbitt unite to form listo.  (what?! i’m out of breath) AND we have some crazy beloved surprises in store.  all that for next to nothing.  the cheapest, most chock-ful o’ goodness new years eve date to be found.  for reals.

big, big changes on the horizon for hogfarm studios.  like a navajo sandpainting, the winds have blown across hfs annex at 140 main street downtown biddeford and it has run its course.  with utmost joy and unspeakable gratitude for what it has been, and for what it is, we are closing her doors.

we are in harmonious flux.

the next three shows will be the last chance to experience hfs annex in its current form. keep your eyes peeled and your ears to the ground for future incarnations.  as for now, c’mon out and shake a tail feather.

this friday is crazy amazing.  we’ve got audrey ryan, sonya cotton, courtney naliboff, the wabba wabbas AND art by the students of the thatcher brook center!  hol’e mol’e.

such a full tilt awesome show with lots of activity for this biddeford artwalk.  hanging at the annex is awesome art from the students of thatcher brook center in biddeford!  sales of the artwork will directly benefit thatcher brook, the artists and hfs annex!

They’ll be in Biddeford to cross pollinate with artvan’s Biddeford teen program, the Joyful Taggers, who have a show up at the Heart of Biddeford.

Anna Vogelzang, unavoidably soulful singer/songwriter and newly-transplanted midwesterner sings the best kind of songs, the ones about feelings. Emily’s Bio: Emily Hope Price is a cellist, composer, songwriter and singer based in New York City. She is in the band, Pearl and the Beard, based out of Brooklyn, and performs and tours both with PatB as well as solo all around the great US of A. She and her cello have recorded for Jason Schwartzman’s HBO series Bored to Death as well as recording with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, and performing with Nadia Ali, Franz Nicolay of the Hold Steady, Wakey! Wakey!, and Ugly Purple Sweater among many others, as well as performing on several national TV and radio broadcasts including NPR’s Soundcheck with John Schaefer performing with Pearl and the Beard and as a collaboration with renown harpist, Bridget Kibbey. She has performed in cities across the country and globe including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Pittsburgh, Miami, Chicago, Egypt, and throughout England, Germany and Romania.

Passed through 47 states hitch-hiking around the country before I entered first grade. Raced motorcycles, went to college, ate mushrooms, hang-glided and studied philosophy. Worked as a gardener, dishwasher, lifeguard, bus-boy, dock-builder, babysitter, record-reviewer, painter, cook, chimney sweep, sheet-rocker, mason, waiter, knife-brander and bunny. Wrote lots of stories and poems. Played in the bands Toast, Unbunny Two-Ton Santa, Size of Guam, The Buckets, Milk of Magnesia, Guy Scramble, Fancy Pants, Bean, The Crotch-Wax Menace, Bob & Guy, Beekeeper, Corn-Pipe, and Tiny Fires. That sort of thing.

The phrase, “the agony of the leaves,” derives from hot water pouring over tea leaves. As the tea steeps and the leaves unfurl, they release various flavors to the water, evolving the taste. While The Daredevil Christopher Wright’s debut album, In Deference to a Broken Back, doesn’t dramatize the agonies given them, they do face the weighty issues of cancer, death, and loss with a realistic and offbeat tone. Their joyful music is layered with the profundity of small moments that flavor life.

The first notes begin with Jon Sunde of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, who studied classical voice, plays tennis, and dislikes fruit in his desserts. Mutual friends introduced him to Jesse Edgington, frequently clothed in grandpa sweaters with a knack for making some mean pesto, and finally, Jon’s older brother Jason Sunde came on board after some hesitancy and a stint to Finland. And the music continued to evolve.

Two years ago, Jason’s struggle with a back injury inspired the recording of In Deference to a Broken Back, the band’s debut full-length (release date: 5.19.09). Mixed by fellow Eau Claire friend, Justin Vernon of the acclaimed Bon Iver, each song offers a story, whether centered on the true events of a brother’s move to New England (“The East Coast”), or fictionalized as in the couple who have plans to be a playwright and stewardess (“Stewardess”). It is the depth in the mundane they prefer, the grouping together of “faith and rocks and slings and things” (“A Conversation About Cancer”). The Daredevil Christopher Wright are the park bench overlooking a mighty river, the subtitles to a foreign film, and the back screen door left to slam shut in the excitement of a ten-year-old on a summer day. – Abi Zimmer

In Deference To A Broken Back has been out for nearly a year in the United States, and has already found an audience won over by the passion and sincerity of The Daredevil Christopher Wright’s music. Even if it takes knowing that Justin Vernon is involved with the project in order for you to give it a listen, you will be confronted with an assured, sonically adventurous record that grows in depth and significance after each spin. The songs are strong and graceful, while the subjects are enduring and eternal, all adding up to a surprisingly potent album. After you inevitably give in and become a big fan of this burgeoning band, you might start to wonder just what it is in the water in Eau Claire, Wisconsin that keeps producing such moving music.

Recently back from her 3rd US National tour, Kelli Rudick is home in NYC recording for her 2nd full length release. She is doing only a few shows on the road in late January. We are proud and amazed to announce that Kelli has chosen to perform in Biddeford at the HFS ANNEX, Fri. Jan.29th .

Deep in the heart of New York’s burgeoning multi-genre intermix, Brooklyn electro/indie/neo-classical artist Kelli Rudick creates music for solo guitars, loop station, array mbira and nail violin. Her live shows are a mix of intricate, experimental and ridiculously complicated compositions from her first release “No One Knows You’re Foreign”, and emotionally driven electro / indie songs with polyrhythmic and neoclassical elements from her forthcoming 2nd record.

Kelli has had great success in NYC, including shows on the mainstage at the The Knitting Factory, Joe’s Pub, the Blue Note, Galapagos, the Cutting Room, Living Room, and The Roooftop Film Festival. She’s toured with Kaki King, collaborated with Nick Zammuto of The Books, and recently completed her 3rd US National tour. Kelli has performed across the states & internationally, including the Mother Music Festival in Tel Aviv, Hotel Cafe in LA, Du Nord in SF, Triple Door in Seattle, Record Bar in KC, and the Casbah in SD among others.

The warmth that radiates from Emily Hope Price fills the room with a sense of calm and comfort. A genuine smile welcomes, lively eyes sparkle, and a breath of fresh air swirls around as the talent of this classically trained cellist grabs your attention. Observing the variety of ways Price uses the cello to make original sound, it’s easy to forget there is a soothing yet powerful voice to match the music.
First starting cello lessons in fourth grade, Price trained for over 12 years, receiving a M.A. in Cello Performance from Carnegie Mellon, and an Artists Certificate from SUNY Purchase. This impressive education fine-tuned her exquisite mastering of the cello, but left Price wanting more. Moving back to Utah upon the Artist Certificate completion, Emily toyed more with the idea of songwriting and improvising. “I had a secret desire to sing,” she said slyly, but found it difficult to break out of the “classical” stereotype. “When people know you as one thing you have to talk them into believing you can do something else.”

…Still, being a “singing cellist” is rare to find in a scene inundated with piano players and guitarists belting their music at the hottest venues. Emily continues to push through with her music, believing in the expanding scene and performing solo and accompanying sets with fellow colleagues. “Things are starting to break through where you wouldn’t normally expect it… little niches are starting to come into play,” Price believes. “I hope some of the things I’m doing will change the expectation about what a cello can do.”

Brooklyn World-Fusion group Loop 2.4.3 re-creates Zodiac Dust at The Hog Farm. Joining the night’s performance is Garth Stevenson, stand up bass/multimedia virtuoso .

Biddeford, ME, October 14, 2009  World/Classical fusion group Loop 2.4.3 performs at The Hog Farm, featuring the music from their release, Zodiac Dust, with a performance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, November 14th 2009 at The Hog Farm, 140 Main St., Suite 107 (back alley) Biddeford, Maine 04005.

In the tradition of sonic innovators like Steve Reich, Konono N1, Moondog, and Radiohead, Loop 2.4.3s new album flows through a vast array of sounds and rhythms across the nine tracks on Zodiac Dust. Their first CD, Batterie, was said to reinvent percussion (Fresh Air, NPR).  Their new CD, nominated for album of the year at the Independent Music Awards, adds piano, voice, strings and two instruments of their invention, the Rose Echo and eLog, both to be featured at the upcoming performance.

Well known for their live shows, recent Loop 2.4.3 performances have been described as Transportive (Boston Phoenix), Intricate and energetic (The New York Times), Mesmerizingstunning (Time Out Chicago),  a hard driving set (Alex Ross, the New Yorker), and a mind-blowing show (Sean Boyd, Art Farm Recordings). The intimate space at Psalm Salon is ideal for the groups percussion-centric, visually exciting performances.

Garth Stevenson (http://www.garthstevenson.com) is an experience that should not be missed.  His peice/performance of  “Grandfather” wins International Society of Double Bassists Composition Competition
“Grandfather” for solo double bass with electronics won the International Society of Double Bassists Composition Competition in the Media Division. It was composed this piece in memory of his grandfather, John Stevenson.

Hailing from Michigan and arriving in Brooklyn via New Haven and Seattle, Loop 2.4.3 has spent the last five years alternately traveling and working in a Bed-Stuy loft space, focused on writing, improvising and creating their own style. They have performed with Clogs, Newband (Harry Partch Ensemble), Daphnis Prieto, Belle Orchestre, the Books, Evan Ziporyn, Sufjan Stevens, Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond, the Decemberists), Joe Morello, their late mentor Robert Hohner, dancer/choreographer Alan Good, director John Jeserun, as soloists with the Brooklyn Philharmonic at the BAM Opera House, and at Times Square as a collaboration with Robert Indiana, Michael McKenzie and Teresa Smith. beautiful color out and about, something about autumn that is so calming;  cider, spices, gentle breezes and earth colors….aahh.  a perfect accompaniment to this beautiful time of year can be taking in a nice night of music at the hfs annex — please join us .

we would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful support many of you have shown during our start-up period.  we realize times are tough, and for you to make a desicion to come spend an evening with us, and to support the arts, is something for which we cannot thank you enough!

that being said, we would like to mention something about our admission prices.  we have made a concerted effort to keep admission prices as low as we possibly can during this bleak economic period.  our business plan and model was developed around a much higher admission fee than what we are asking.  this was to compensate artists as gainfully as we could while taking a small percentage for operations.  well, with people out of jobs and the economy in the proverbial sh!tt3r, many plans have flown out the window.  we have flat lined prices to an average of the $5 dollar mark.  as many of you have witnessed, the artists whom we have been so lucky to have visited biddeford are worth so much more than what we collect at the door.

it has been bittersweet,  inspiring heartfelt events that help keep us going, then the sobering reality of solvency and trying to keep the doors open.

we are all in this together, and are experiencing some amazing solidarity.  musicians understand the situation coming in, and they continue wanting to come play for all of us.  our booking requests are growing exponentially by the week.  it is truly amazing.  and to our community of fine folks, we humbly ask that you continue to check local listings and our website, for events coming to hogfarm.   we are asking for your support by helping us spread the word with friends and family and would love to see you come on out for some quality entertainment.  we are quite grateful for the press coverage as of late — add to the growing list, a feature in this month’s maine magazine and a great review of the brad hoshaw and the seven deadlies show in the phoenix.

lots of new stuff coming into lovinganvil — and today miss cv and i will be there, working on her halloween costume (a fancy, victorian ghost, for those wondering) and building our dia de los muertos offrenda in the window.  i’m not sure if the bunnies will be there or not.  blue raspberry ate thru a stereo speaker wire and our modem plug the last time she was cruising around.  d@mn bunnies.  but the are cute.  we’ll see.  oh.  and the bunnies also ate thru our phone cord.  so call 971.645.9710 if you want to get a hold of us.  until the cord is replaced.  but don’t tell gil.  he’s already threatening to make bunny stew.

the next day was the chalk on the walk festival in dtown biddeford.  chad and renee (spider plus octopus) stayed and contributed to the chalk art.  dustin and kyle would have if they could, but had to start the long long drive to omaha.  safe travels, friends!

Boston’s Mexo-Americana Quartet Releases New Album

Boston, MA – August 26, 2009 – The David Wax Museum will release its new album Carpenter Bird on September 18th at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA. The David Wax Museum, a talented foursome based in Boston, fits in alongside other great New England folk acts with its heart-wrenching harmonies, poignant lyrics, and deep-rooted Americana sound. Yet, The David Wax Museum joyful injection of Mexican spice makes it stand out in this rich folk scene. The band pivots seamlessly between toe-tapping numbers and exhuberant Mexo-Americana songs that quickly bring audiences to their feet with call-and-response hollering, jarana strumming, and donkey jawbone rattling.
David Wax’s long and winding path has inspired The David Wax Museum’s lively fusion of traditional Mexican and American folk music. This Mexo-Americana creation draws on David’s mid-Missouri upbringing and years of study in Mexico. Initially raised on the gritty and searing sound of local country rockers like Uncle Tupelo, David gravitated early on towards Midwestern Roots Rock. He would go on to spend his first two years of college on a cattle ranch in California before wandering around the US on a Greyhound and spending several summers working in rural Mexico. He eventually followed in the steps of Gram Parsons and Pete Seeger and transferred to Harvard, where he studied Latin American history and literature. This primed David, upon graduating, to return to the dusty back roads of Mexico to learn the rural folk music of Central Mexico. The new instruments, rhythms, and song structures he brought back with him led to a natural blending of these two distinct musical traditions of Midwestern folk and son mexicano.
When David returned to Boston from Mexico, he quickly found the core group of musicians who comprise the Museum: Jiro Kokubu, Suz Slezak, and Greg Glassman (The Sacred Shakers). The David Wax Museum has quickly built up its Boston audience, consistently selling out its shows at the historic Club Passim. In 2008, the band landed its first opening show with The Avett Brothers (Columbia Records). This successful show led to the band joining three separate legs of The Avett Brother’s Emotionalism national tour and helped expose the band to a wider audience. The David Wax Museum has also shared the stage with The Low Anthem (Nonesuch Records), the everybodyfields (Ramseur Records), and Bombadil (Ramseur Records) Carpenter Bird, the band’s second album and the first with its Boston line-up, is a riveting collage of upbeat Mexican influenced tunes that have one foot firmly planted in the roots of American music. The album, mixed by Missouri music legend Lou Whitney (Wilco, Jonathan Richman, Blue Mountain, The Bottle Rockets), captures the band’s energy and unique Mexo-Americana sound. A stellar cast of guest musicians who have played with Josh Ritter, Eilen Jewell, Mandy Moore, and The People’s Republic of Klezmerica round out The David Wax Museum’s exciting new album.
The band will be touring this fall up and down the East Coast to promote its latest record.
