I'm thankful that my mom got to celebrate another year of life this week!

I'm thankful for a loving husband and sweet daughter that exercise with me, even when exercise is walking in place downstairs for 15 minutes.

I'm thankful that I can no easily do 10 sit ups a day. Don't mind the fact that I try to do more than that each day, ten are now easy.

I'm thankful that my birthday is coming up very soon!

I'm thankful that I have a fresh bag of coffee and a weekend in front of me to enjoy it.

I'm thankful that my cute kitty is silly. This morning she got puffy because of one of Hannah's toys, silliest thing ever.

I'm thankful that I have people in my life that are willing to laugh when I laugh.

Here's how my day went, I pulled out the crock pot in the AM, rinsed off a package of split peas and dumped them in. I diced up some slice ham and added it in, then added a diced onion, no celery which the recipe calls for mainly because I just didn't have any. Then I added five cups of water and 2 teaspoons of bouillon. Put the lid on, set it on low for eight hours and proceeded to clean the house, wash clothes and fold things. About 45 minutes before I wanted to eat, I started working on the rolls. They are called 30 minute rolls, but it would be more realistic to call them 45 minute rolls, but really who is going to make rolls that take 45 minutes when you can get ones in 30. Any way, I made the dough just as the recipe calls, except, I mix by hand and then do a little kneading before making them into balls and placing them in the pan. We've had them twice this past week and they were excellent both times. It's a light, airy dough, similar to the Swedish rolls recipe I posted before but with a LOT less work.

Everyone in the house enjoyed the meal and the best part was that I only had to do a few minutes worth of work to get a delicious meal on the table.

With three of us, we rarely eat an entire plate of biscuits. I almost always cut the recipe in half, but last night, even with cutting the recipe in half, I still had a ton of biscuits left over. I began to wonder if bread pudding was an option. I did some googling and came up with this biscuit bread pudding from Homesick Texan. I wanted to pin it, but Pinterest doesn't always recognize all the things I recognize. So here are my photos and what I did in adapting it

Doesn't that just look tasty? It was, very tasty. I liked it.

Here's a close up so you can see all the nummy fruit.

I greased the pan and then crumbled the biscuits in it. Poured over two cups of milk and let it rest. I then proceeded to beat two eggs and add a half cup each of brown and white sugar. I also added cinnamon (which I would leave out if I were making chocolate again), vanilla, salt and cocoa powder. Mixed all that up and then added it to the bread and milk in the pan, mixed it all up until it was pretty much the same color all over. Added in some dried berry mix which is heavy on the cherries, but has bits of other things, too. Cooked it in a 375 degree oven for just about 45 minutes. We didn't let it cool long before digging in. I had an extra bite with a bit of Sanders' caramel drizzled on top. I was able to teach Hannah the meaning of "Gilding the Lily" with that trick.

It think it's great for breakfast, snack or dessert. Bread pudding is a great way to use up bread that would other wise go to waste, it's like the culinary version of reduce reuse recycle.

I have the pleasure of having a birthday coming up very soon. In two weeks, I will be 36 years old. I think that's considered late thirties, right? But I'm not really writing today about growing older or the wisdom that comes with time, I'm writing about gifts.

When I was younger, I would love for people to ask me what I wanted for my birthday. I would hope for one of the many things I would name. But the truth be told, my favorite gifts were always the ones that were a surprise to me that also told me that the giver really knew me and cared about what I would think of their gift.

Now, I keep a wishlist, but secretly, I want things that can't be bought on Amazon. I prefer things that I've never seen before, that no one else will have, things that are unique and unusual, just like me. For example, one of my most beloved, but highly balked at gifts is a vase that Joel and I received for our wedding. It is wrapped in leather and quite honestly looks like a dead bat strapped around a glass cylinder. We'll never find another one. It comes out for Halloween, though I couldn't find it this year and I was a bit sad about that. Something else that is unique that I was sure that we did not need when we got it was a square crystal cake plate. In fact, we returned it. Then received another one exactly like it a few weeks later. I use it every time we have a party!

I guess the thing that I've really learned over the years is that I'm not the best judge of what I will like, need, love, or even enjoy. I like when other people interpret me and show me through a gift. But then, if people know me well enough to do that, they are a gift in themselves.

that lived in Sellerstown, NC in the 1970’s. As dramatic and terrible as her
story is, the saddest part for me is that she is not alone in what happened to
her. Granted, very few of us will ever go through the physical hardship of
having our home bombed and destroyed by the hands of man, we won’t all lose our
parents in such tragic ways, but the devil sits in far too many of our
churches.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, but at the same time
it drug up memories of things that have occurred to us in churches over the
years and as Alonzo talks about in the book, it’s not a one-time forgiveness
and you’re done, you have to reaffirm that forgiveness towards humanity over
and over again. The beauty of this book is the story of Alonzo’s parents’
legacy to their children. Even though they did not have much time with them on
earth, the message that they sent with their lives in that time is still being
lived out through both of their children.

This book is a wonderful read for those of us that want to
leave a legacy to our children that is rich in scripture and the Gospel. It is also wonderful reminder for those of us
that have battled with the devil and the sometimes daily work that we must do
in the area of forgiveness. I would tell
you that when you purchase the book, you should get yourself some tissues as
well.

This book was given to me by Tyndale House Publishers for
the purpose of reviewing.

Today, I'm thankful for good decisions.

I'm thankful that I'm FINALLY starting to see some progress with Hannah and reading.

I'm thankful for a dear sweet husband who cares for me and loves spending time at home with me.

I'm thankful for friends.

I'm thankful for a pair of shoes that may very well change my life.
I'm thankful for scripture and how it still speaks today.

There was only one recipe that I started with, it was Alfredo Sauce Recipe from Allrecipes.com. But I modified it. So first of all, we grilled chicken on our Griddler (It's awesome, totally better than the George Forman, which I never enjoyed cleaning or storing), then I boiled the pasta. While the pasta was boiling, I melted a half a stick of butter in a sauce pan and put in two cloves of chopped garlic. Once the butter was melted, I added a small container of heavy whipping cream. I continued to cook the butter, garlic and cream for about five minutes. Then I added in a package of pre-shredded Parmesan, not the stuff in the can, but the kind that is with the pre-shredded cheeses. I stirred it all up when it was as melted as it was gonna get, I added a bit of fresh ground nutmeg to it. In the midst of all this, the broccoli was put into the microwave, the cooked chicken was sliced and it all came to the table.

Joel and I both really enjoyed it. Hannah has a thing for sauces and will only eat tomato sauce, and that's not a given.

Here are some things that I did not do according to the recipe and why. The recipe says to put the garlic in with the cheese. I did not do that because I don't like raw garlic and felt like it would not cook nearly long enough to get rid of the harshness that raw garlic has. I am a firm believer that garlic should be cooked. I did not add parsley to mine, because I did not like the smell of the bunch I had in the fridge from the week before. Though it probably would have been a nice addition. Here's one more thing that I wouldn't do again, I used an artisinal blend that had Parmesan and another hard cheese mixed with it. They did not melt the same, leaving it a bit lumpy, next time, I'll just use straight up Parmesan.

That's my tasty dish for the week! What have you made recently that was tasty?

I was contemplating my current state of health when I waked
up the stairs and noticed a package outside our front door. I opened the door, brought the package
inside, opened it up and there was Every Body Matters. It was a book that I had off handedly put my
name in to review for Zondervan and forgotten about. And here it was in my hands while I was
wondering what to do about the fact that I feel like I’m getting old and
falling apart. I’m so thankful that it
showed up and that I took the chance to read.

The main principle in this book is that physical exercise
can and should have purpose outside of losing weight or changing the look of
our body. In fact, the purpose it can
have is much closer to God than either of those. The purpose of activity to strengthen our
body can be to strengthen our soul and increase our ability to say yes to
God.

Thomas challenges the current ideas about taking care of our
body and why we should do it and gives us a reason beyond vanity and health, to
something that is potentially sustainable throughout our lives. This book has been extremely encouraging and
challenging for me. I have been inspired
to move more often and to say no to the impulses of my body in the hopes that
one day soon, I’ll be able to say yes to something so much more.

Every Body Matters is not a chastising for a lack of
activity, it is an invitation to a life much deeper and richer than we may
currently be living. This is an eye
opening, heart changing response to something that the world has made dull,
boring and tedious. Taking care of
ourselves is not some arduous task, but a challenge to discipline ourselves in
the hopes of creating stronger souls as well as bodies.

Recently, though, I've discovered that there are some things that I've been Googling that I have to stop my obsession with. I've been Googling about my health. Taking any small annoyance of my aging body and putting it together in different combinations with whatever else is annoying me at the moment and trying to find out what is going on with my body.

The other day, as I was driving to class, I was struck by how little control I admit to God in regards to these petty annoyances. I think that I'm something broken that needs and can be fixed by finding out solutions from Google and then applying them until I find the right combination of things and viola! I'm saved from myself. Seeing it written like that draws me into the seduction more so than pushing me into the truth. Because the truth is Google can't save me. My doctors with all their knowledge and expertise can't save me either. There is only one who can save me and he's already done that on the cross over 2000 years ago. So even though I've been saved since long before I was born, I still feel the need to apply myself and to save myself through techniques and diets and exercise regimes that I discover on the internet. Maybe this is the key to making me whole! But it's not. I'm never going to be whole here on this earth and that is what I really have to come to terms with.

God did not save me so that I could spend hour after hour over numerous days Googling how to stop this body from decay and life. He saved me for glory, His glory, not my own, not Google's, not even my doctors'. I am here for his Glory, not to worry about whether or not I'm eating the right combination of food or whether or not I'm as healthy as I will ever be. He placed me here to discipline myself so that I may know him more and may shine with his Glory. And with that revelation, it's become clear to me that I have to give up googling my signs and symptoms in the hopes of saving myself, because the truth is it's like putting a Barbie band-aid on top of healed scar.

My goal for 2012: Buy a pair of running shoes and wear them out.

I've got one half of my goal done already! And I thought that I would share my progress with you, so here are some pictures of my brand new shoes.

Them's my new shoes and my Christmas pajamas. They look so clean!

There's a tread that has never been on something other than carpet.

I'm hoping to walk my shoes into oblivion this year, needing to buy a brand new pair at the end of the year. I'm going to break them in tomorrow at the art museum. It should be a nice painful day. I might take some moleskin with me. I hope to update you once a week on how they're holding up and the adventures that we take.

What about you, did you make any BHAGs for 2012?

I was excited to start reading this installment of Jade and Max’s adventures, mainly because Softly and Tenderly ended with such a cliff hanger. In this story, Jade and Max turn away from their pasts and towards a new life in Christ. Set in a small town in Texas, this story does a great job of expressing the fears and joys that are found when we let go of the old and take on the new.
It’s a relatively quick read and a nice tidy ending for our journey with Jade and Max. I enjoyed the Texas high school football aspect of the story and having lived in Texas for a short while; found that Evans and Hauck captured the lifestyle very well. The story line of Max’s parents is brought up in the beginning of the book, but mostly ignored from that point, which felt a little glossed over. Overall, I would recommend the entire Songbird series for an emotional journey that shows one families circle from sin to redemption to acceptance and action.

We're slowly making our way towards Christmas and the one thing that I can say is that this has been a season of repentance for me. I'm trying my best to see things as God desires, but there is so much history clouding my view sometimes. What about you, what word would you use to describe this Christmas season?

It's almost like a scent memory. In this time of Christmas, you'll know what I'm talking about. When you smell the woodsy evergreen of Christmas trees or the warm sweet scent of cookies baking, you remember something deep within you. That smell reaches down into the thoughts that you haven't had in a very long time and pulls them to the surface as if you were living that moment again. It's beautiful and wonderful and I marvel at the fact that God gave us memories, because honestly, we could have been like fish that see themselves in the side of the tank, turn around and are surprised to see the reflection there again.
Having suffered from depression and a bit of anxiety, any time that I start to feel blue it's as if I am in the throws of my darkest moment. It's just a flash, but it's very real, just like those Christmas memories of cookies for Santa. The worst part for me is that I can't have a few bad days without wondering if I have a few bad months ahead of me. And that wonder can easily slip into fear.
How do introverts like myself wonder without fear? I would say for me, it's by taking that wonder to God and placing it before His feet and trying my best to leave it there. I am thankful that when I place that wonder before Him, I have as deep of a relief as I did of memory of those dark moments. Sometimes, I foolishly pick back up what I have laid down, but I don't carry it for as long, because when I do such things it's more out of habit than desire. I no longer desire to carry it around and as soon as I realize that it's there, I turn around and give it back up.
This sounds easy, but trust me, there were many dark months of depression and persecution that lead to this new habit of releasing that which can lead me to fear. It was in the midst of that and seeing, feeling, and living God's love that I was able to get to this place.
I want to let you know that these trials that you are going through right now, they are temporary, even if they last the rest of your days here on earth, they will be just a whisper of time if you are a believer in Jesus Christ. He's working in those dark moments and He's bringing forth something amazing within you. Know that you are not alone. You will survive this moment, place it at His feet and if you can't walk away, just rest there and know good things are in your future.

Anyway, I'm not really talking about Christmas presents, I wanted to share about some of the fruits of patience. I've had lots of opportunities to be patient. I don't always take them, but when I do, there are some awesome things that happen. I can't explain to you how it is that I let my impatience cause me to believe that I can make things turn out better than God, but somehow I do. So I wanted to share one specific thing with you.

We bought our mattress when we were first married. It came with a free metal frame, the kind that you can attach a headboard to. Well, we have talked about getting another frame to go with it, but never made a real move towards buying one. The other day, Joel, Hannah and I were sitting on the end of the bed and the whole thing fell. One of the center legs had snapped. After ten years, numerous moves, uncountable number of room rearrangements, I totally understand how it could give out. Joel propped up the bar with some books. It was working, but we knew something was going to have to happen. I started pricing beds, nothing that I really really had to have or thought about spending the rest of my life with jumped out. Then it came to mind that we could just get a new metal frame. So I started researching that instead, but didn't purchase. And then today I was looking to see if there was a place in town where I could go and pick up a bed frame. I checked Home Depot to see if they carried one, because hey, Martha Stewart sells beds there, why not.
When I searched on the website, it pulled up a picture of the wheel that we have on our bed, which got me thinking. Could I just replace the old leg with a new leg? They were 5 dollars plus tax for two of wheels. I came home and put them right in, easy peasy, and the bed was fixed.
I have learned that patience isn't about doing nothing while you wait, patience is knowing what you can do within your gifts while you wait that help get you in a place to see God's provision when it occurs. I have had to go through a lot of trial and error to discover what I can do while I'm being patient. I'm very excited about this last time, because it just shows again, that God has something in mind that we are supposed to be spending our money on this Christmas season and we have not quite discovered what that is yet.

1. I really wanted to get Hannah a Christmas mug. We normally have a hot drink on Christmas morning, like Egg Nog lattes or something equally yummy. There were four big beautiful mugs that we bought years ago, but the paint was chipping on them and they were tossed at the end of last Christmas season. We had two whimsical mugs that are Christmas themed. I had been on the look out for another set. Then I decided that I was just going to get Hannah her own Christmas mug this year and we would have three all together. Yesterday, we went to church, someone walked in to the class I was in and asked if anyone needed ONE Christmas mug. Needless to say, Hannah loves it :)

2. As we were sitting in Joel's office yesterday. I decided that I would get him a new jar of candy. He likes to keep candy in the office and his supply was pretty much done. There was a luncheon after the service and we won one of the prizes, which was....a big container of Jelly Bellys.

I'm not sure exactly what it is that God wants me to spend my money on this season, but He has made it pretty clear that He's willing to help me out in some areas in order to insure that I will have the funds when it presents itself. I am thankful that God provides for me in such small ways, because it always reminds me that if He's in the mundane then He is definitely in the extraordinary.

Having lived through 35 Christmas's already, I will admit, I remember several gifts that my parents got me for Christmas and I will also admit that they are stored aka not in use or have long since passed hands. It reminds me that the things of this world pass away, but the word of the Lord remains forever.
There is a tremendous push to accumulate things of this world, but there has to be because they fade so quickly, if you don't consume them now, you might never get the chance to? I mean how many of us are still listening to 8 tracks? Who still plays with Rainbow Brite? Has anyone seen a leisure suit on the rack lately?

This is stuff that we all had to have, and now it has run its course and has faded away. What can we do this Christmas that invests in things that aren't fading? Here's some practical ideas for you.

1. Be with people. Don't go to parties and eat the snacks, drink the drinks and then miss out on the best treat of all, the conversations! Make time, even if that means that you have to give something else up, to be with people any way you can.

2. Write a postcard. Stationary can be overwhelming when you want to just let someone know that you're thinking of them, so send a post card, just to say hi and say a prayer as it goes out your door.

3. Celebrate every day. Don't wait until Christmas day to give gifts, none of us are guaranteed a single moment of time on this earth except the one that we are in. Yes, waiting is an important skill to learn. But let's be honest, shouldn't we be building anticipation for the birth of the king more than which doll is under the tree?

4. Take time to pray. Talk with Jesus this season, those conversations will be a wise investment in your future.

We celebrate our Sabbath on Friday. My husband is a pastor, he has to work on Sundays so we don't really get the luxury of taking Sunday as a lazy day. He also has a lot of meetings on Saturdays, because the church is made up of people that work Monday through Friday and we sometimes need Saturday to meet together to get the work of the church done. So, we have settled on Friday. Joel does not go into the office, we as a family tend to ignore the phone, and we try our best to ignore the internet, but that hasn't been happening as much lately, we ignore the television, and we pay attention to other things. We spend time being thankful for the gifts that God has given us. Though we aren't perfect in this pursuit, we do try. And that's what our Sabbath day is, an attempt to take an entire day and remember that God rested and we should rest, too.

And it is with this day of rest behind us that we enter into the weekend, looking forward to being with those that we work alongside.

How do you rest?
