Polar Play

I was excited to take out the polar play set I made last winter now hat Ana was a little older and more able to appreciate it.

This week, I told the story "The Polar Bear", from "Tell Me a Story". I had the perfect props for this - and Ana loved it. She asked to hear it over and over.

Baking day - I made banana penguins for everyone for dessert. Ana and I made polar bear cupcakes. She put on all the eyes - they were very expressive!

Penguins sure are tasty!

Several of our polar bear cupcake looked more like white pigs to me, but hey, they were adorable, and very yummy!

Painting day - simply white paint for snow on blue sky paper. Ana actually spent several minutes painting the paper, and not herself. This is new!

Sensory day - The perfect theme for snow dough! Simple method - add enough oil to white flour to make it clump together a little, bu not form an actual dough. This was a great sensory experience - I kneaded and played with the snow for quite a while, too!

I've been picking up those tubes of animals for our themes when I can find them. While I prefer wooden, wool, or other natural toys, those toys can't really go into our sensory bins without being ruined, so these are wonderful for that. This is the Arctic Toob

Craft day - Inspired by the polar bear story I've been telling all week, we made ice wreaths. I don't have a bundt pan, but I do have small vintage donut pans, so those worked for mini ice wreaths. And added citrus and cranberries first, then we poured in water and let them freeze. These will also go on the bird tree.

We had a snowstorm this weekend, so we had a lot of snow play, in and outside. It has been a remarkably snow-less winter here in CT this year.

Winter Birds

"Bird" was Ana's first word. She has loved birds ever since she first watched them out on the deck as an infant. So the theme of birds is one we visit a few times a year. This week was our winter bird week.

We started off the week with our playgroup. I planned most of the winter playgroup sessions to have the same theme as we are doing for that week. So this week we read some bird stories, painted paper plate birds, and made birdseed ornaments

Tuesday is baking day. We made a nut and seed bread. We finished half the loaf and gave the other half to the chickens.

Painting day - sky and birch trees. Ana used a sponge stamp for the first time to stamp red birds all over the trees.

Craft day - we strung dried orange slices and fresh cranberries for the birds. We put our Christmas tree on the deck to decorate it with bird treats. Unfortunately, it keeps blowing over in the wind, so I have to get out there and secure it before we can decorate it.

3 Kings

Epiphany, Three Kings Day, Dia de los Reyes -- the end of the Christmas season. This year, it was all about camels. Or, particularly about one camel, Humphrey. Ana became obsessed with this book and we had to read it several times a day.

Baking day - we baked a cake for the holiday, as well as cinnamon sugar tortillas, and a Chipotle style dinner - carnitas, cilantro lime rice, and all the fixins'

Painting day - we painted paper to make into crowns. Gold, silver, bronze paints

Sensory day - we are getting lots of use out of the stone box from Advent. The girls both love it.

Craft day - we made beautiful window stars to hang in the dining room window. I did all the folding beforehand, and showed Ana how to put the pieces together with a little dot of glue. She did mos of the assembly.

We visited Blueberry Sky this week for their open house tea party. Ana now has to have tea every day. We took out my beautiful tea pot to make ti special, and a couple of mugs, and now we share tea every afternoon.

We got season passes this year for Lake Compounce, and included was the Festival of Lights holiday spectacular. We had never been before, so weren't sure what to expect. It was fantastic - big and little kids both enjoyed it!

Advent

This was our first year doing an Advent spiral and an Advent garden. Last year, we planned the spiral with our playgroup but between weather and illness, we never were able to hold the event. Thankfully, it worked out this year because it was magical!

It was warm, but with a mist/light rain the entire evening. It made for tough picture taking. This is the spiral all lit up at the end of the walk.

Our Advent garden was truly beautiful. It was something Ana looked forward to all day, each day. A special moment after dinner to shut the lights, light the candles, and read the next story from "The Light in the Lantern".

I wanted something to hold all the treasures of the 4 kingdoms, so I made a simple wooden box from birch plywood to fit the top of the piano. I dyed some flannel for a backdrop, added some silk fabric, and a beautiful angel and stars made by a friend. Our perpetual 'tree" would hold treasures in the coming weeks as well.

Week 1 - Mineral kingdom. The candle holder is in place, with stones for the path. Holden added some gems from his collection.

Week 2: Plant kingdom. We added some flowers and a tree, along with moss on the other side of the candles. And late last week added beeswax stars hanging from our branches.

Christmas Eve - Animal and Human kingdoms now added - Mary, Joseph, the donkey, and some wildlife.

December is such a fun - but crazy - month! Some happenings ...

Hot cocoa day - Ana tried very hard to drink her cocoa through the candy cane.

Making Christmas ornaments with playgroup

It was warm out the entire month of December. When did we get our tree? Thanksgiving weekend, in November. Literally the only cold and nasty day the whole holiday season. My husband looks like a shepherd with my ring sling on his head (it was also raining).

Ana loved the Christmas village too much. She carried around all "the guys" (what she calls any animal figures - stuffed, ceramic, whatever), and inevitably, they almost all broke at some point. Holden would collect the pieces and make new characters for the village - like this one, a goose head on a man's body.

Our sensory bin this month was stones, in honor of the 1st week of advent. It was a huge hit. I think the only thing more popular was the corn pit on the deck.

Thanksgiving

We spread Thanksgiving out the week before, and the 3 days the week of. We spent a lot of this time cleaning out the house, something I do with a vengeance every year just before I pull out the holiday decorations.

Monday - playgroup. We had our Thanksgiving pot luck dinner and we decorated cupcakes. Somebody *really* liked the cranberry sauce!

It was fun, and when do kids with food allergies/sensitivities/intolerances ever get to decorate cupcakes?!?

Tuesday - baking day. The first Tuesday, we made corn muffins and shook up cream FOREVER to make our own butter. Ana shook the first 15 seconds and the last 15 seconds - she was quite proud of herself when she opened the jar and saw she had shaken the cream up into butter! She promptly drank all the buttermilk.

The second Tuesday, we made carrot soup. It wasn't what I had planned;this was Ana's idea. I've been telling the story of Hugin's Carrot, and the last line of the story is "and Hugin made carrot soup". Ana stood up and said "Ok" and walked into the kitchen. When I asked where she was going, she said "I making a carrot soup, just like Hugin does!". So off we went to make carrot soup for lunch.

I think she just wanted to use the peeler. It is her current favorite kitchen gadget.

And spices - she is obsessed with adding large amounts of spices to everything. Her favorite food is "'picy salad" - a mix of kale, cabbage, and lettuce into which goes a huge amount of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, cajun spice, pepper, garlic salt, dill, and parsley. She eats it daily.

Considering we used no recipe and just threw into the pot what we had in the fridge, the soup was surprisingly tasty! It made a nice lunch paired with the leftover bread from our Thanksgiving dinner.

"Recipe" for carrot soup:

Peel and cube several carrots and place in a stockpot. We had probably a pound and a half, orange, yellow, white, and 1 purple. Add one diced onion. Add spices - Ana put them all in so nothing was even remotely measured, but we used freshly ground pepper, salt, garlic salt, parsley, thyme, and dill. Add water to just cover the carrots and bring to a boil, them simmer until the carrots are tender. Add broth; I used chicken bone broth because that's what I had in the freezer. It was probably a cup and a half. Puree the carrot and broth mixture; I used our nutribullet for this. Add cream or milk, rewarm if necessary. It was the perfect temperature for Ana and Meems with the addition of the cream.

Wednesday - Painting day. Autumn colors in liquid watercolor, which I later cut into leaf shapes for our thankful tree.

Thursday - Sensory/Tactile. We made pumpkin pie playdough. I've recently discovered that you can add cornstarch to relatively anything and end up with playdough. So we mixed together a can of pumpkin puree with cornstarch and pumpkin pie spice, and broke out the pumpkin cookie cutters. The whole house smelled delicious!

Friday - Craft day. We made handprint turkeys. These are the start of a calendar's worth of handprint art that we are working on for Tata for Christmas.

And, of course, we had to set up our Thanksgiving nature tables this week!

Martinmas

Martinmas has to be my favorite of the festivals. The cold, crisp night air, the smell of beeswax candles, a bonfire ... and the spirit of helping others.

Monday - We had our playgroup here in the evening. We started with a pot luck dinner, which everyone shared, in honor of St Martin. Once it was dark, we lit our lanterns (with real candles this year!) and took a walk through the driveway. We ended with a bonfire in the backyard with s'mores and other yummy chocolate desserts.

Tuesday - Baking day. Tuesday was the day before Martinmas, so Ana and I started to get ready. We made some gluten free horseshoe cookies

Holden and I worked on some beeswax lanterns that night, once the littles went to bed. They came out beautifully. Our balloons were a little too big so they are more like candle bowls than lanterns, but we really enjoyed making them and the are beautiful all lit up!

Wednesday - Painting day. We didn't paint this week; instead we added another baking day to get our Martinmas dinner ready for that night. Ana had a lot of fun making gluten free weckmenn (which was very yummy!!)

Our holiday dinner consisted of the traditional "goose" (which for us was roasted chicken - Holden and Kenna would never eat goose if I tried to make it!), winter squash, salad, weckmenn, and horseshoe cookies for dessert. We ate by candlelight (with the lights on dim after candles started almost getting knocked over - candlelight dinner with 4 kids is not an easy task!)

Thursday - Sensory/tactile day. We rolled and decorated beeswax candles today.

Ana is a little young for this for sure, but she enjoyed it.

Friday - craft day. I had planned on painting some fabric to make a blanket today, but Ana had other plans. She requested lots of books and snuggle time, so that's what we did ♥

Bears & Owls

This has been my favorite week yet! Our cornerstone books this week were "Bear Snores On"and "Little Owls' Night".

The best thing about this week is our new bear cave.

I happened to see something like this on pinterest Sunday, so I went through the house looking for boxes big enough, but we didn't have any. We did have display boards though. 2 black display boards for the cave, 1 additional white one, cut up for the back and cave front, half a roll of kraft paper, and almost an entire roll of packing tape later, we had this!

It is surprisingly sturdy. It has stood up to not only Ana, Meems, and Holden, but 2 weeks in a row now of playgroup craziness. We spent much of the week curled up in there reading bear books. It is big enough that mama and Ana can fit in together. But it is coziest with a big pillow and warm blanket.

Monday - Playgroup. We began our Martinmas preparations this week by making lanterns for our lantern walk next week.

Tuesday - Baking day. What else but honey cookies?

Even better ... honey cookies shaped like bear and his woodland friends!

We also made some honey nuts in preparation for our bear snores on party. These were delicious and so simple. We just mixed some local honey into a bowl of peanuts and almonds, spread them into a pan, sprinkled with sea salt and roasted on 450 for a few minutes.

Wednesday - Painting day. Night sky finger painting. Blue, black, and purple paints, and a large sheet of heavy watercolor paper

Mama didn't check the glitter container - the wrong side of the lid was open! LOTS of glitter!!

Later in the week, once it was dry, Ana added some shimmery star stickers to the painting. They didn't stick where there was glitter, which was almost everywhere.

Thursday - Sensory/Tactile day. I had one project in mind, Ana had another.

I made night sky dough. I loved it. Ana enjoyed it as well, but not as much as I had hoped.

Holden and I have been working with clay all week. He's been sculpting some characters and I've been making Christmas ornaments. So Ana didn't want super cool night sky playdough - with glitter! - she wanted clay. We broke out the woodland animal cookie cutters again and she made a bunch of clay animals that we'll paint when dry and use for Christmas ornaments this year.

Friday - Bear Snores On party!

Halloween

Monday - Playgroup. We had out Halloween party this week. We had a trick or treat treasure hunt, where the kids found hidden treasures likes tattoos and Halloween ducks. We made cinnamon apples and "everything free" caramel (our playgroup has members with gluten, dairy, corn, soy, egg, shellfish allergies, and vegan members - even still, we cook a lot and make some really delicious things!).

Tuesday - Baking. We broke out the cookie cutters for Halloween sugar cookies!

I used a vegan coconut flour recipe so that Meems could play with the dough too. I can't remember where the recipe is originally from, and I've tweaked it a little bit Recipe is below.

Wednesday - Painting day. We painted a pumpkin.

Or, at least, that's how we started.

Thursday - Sensory/Tactile day. I made a new rice box for this week. Black and orange rice (super simple - toss rice with liquid watercolor or food coloring in a ziplock bag, then spread out to dry), with various scoops and spoons, and some Halloween cookie cutters.

Friday - Craft day. We did another resist painting today, this time, a spiderweb.

We've had a lot of fun in circle time this week with song/story sets we've gotten in Halloween swaps this year and last. We sang "Three Little Ghosts", and "5 Little Pumpkins", and told the story of "The Little Hobgoblin".

Ana is surprisingly good at puzzles, for not quite 2 1/2. These she needed a little help with.

and we had to get in some Halloween bowling as well!

Coconut Sugar Cookies

3/4 cup coconut sugar
1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
1/3 cup coconut milk
2t vanilla
3/4 cup white rice flour (Bob's Red Mil 1:1)
1/3 cup coconut flour
2T tapioca starch
1/2t baking powder
1/2t baking soda
1t xanthan gum

Mix everything together. Roll into balls or cut with cookie cutters and place on a baking sheet.

Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 10 minutes. Tops will brown slightly.

Pumpkins

Monday - Playgroup. We had a trip to one of our favorite pumpkin farms scheduled today. Unfortunately, we spent almost all this week sick with a nasty bug, so we missed out.

Tuesday - baking day. My, my, pumpkin pie!

I think Ana may like baking day best. She doesn't even care if she gets to eat it; she really enjoys the process of cooking/baking. Anything and everything.

"More cream, mama". Then, of course, she wouldn't eat it and had to take it off.

Wednesday - Painting day. I saw a lot of these glue resist pumpkin paintings on pinterest. I dd the glue the night before.

This was another painting project where she painted everything but the paper.

Monday - Playgroup. Nothing this week.

Tuesday - Baking day. Went out into the herb garden to cut fresh herbs for herbed popovers today.

Gluten free popovers are tricky - they don't always pop. These came out wonderfully though! We used the recipe from 12 Loaves.

Wednesday - Painting day. This may be the first painting activity where she painted the paper rather than herself :P Fall colored leaves.

Thursday - Sensory/Tactile day. Dried beans and various scoops.

Friday - Craft day. Leaf suncatchers. I spread out contact paper and Ana stuck pieces of kite paper all over. I covered it with another piece of contact paper and cut out some leaf shapes and hung them on the windows.

Michaelmas

Michaelmas week started off with a celebration with our playgroup/homeschool group.

and dragon bread, of course. We also had a treasure hunt and found a dragon's nest outside and played pin the tail on the dragon.

Apples

Best way to start apple week? Apple picking!

Holden decided to pick every apple off this particular tree. Thankfully Kenna was there to give him a boost to get those last ones at the top! .

Lots of gorgeous weather this week meant lots of time to explore outside. Ana ventured into the backyard to climb the rocks.

Baking day was fried apple rings. They didn't come out very well, unfortunately.

Squirrels

"Furrels" are a favorite here. We feed them on our deck and watch them scamper around daily. So naturally, squirrel week was a big hit. We have a squirrel game from Count On It (how I wish she still made games!), and did a lot of play with the big and little squirrel puppets. And there have been wooden acorns everywhere!

So what's for baking day during squirrel week? Why, nut cookies of course! And we made some no bake seed and nut energy bars as well.

Fall Fun

Monday - Playgroup day, but we were supposed to be away this week and didn't have it. But we did handprints to turn into leaves at a previous playgroup, which we finished and hung in our windows

Tuesday - Baking Day. The apple roses have been popping up on facebook for a few weeks now, so we tried it out today. We used Gluten Free on a Shoestring's sopapilla recipe for the crust/dough. It didn't roll up as well as I had hoped. Next time, I will try a different dough.

They tasted yummy though! (and isn't my Rising Sun Earthworks mug awesome?!?)

Wednesday - Painting day. We worked on prototypes of our Martinmas lanterns this week.

Thursday - Sensory/tactile. We took out the rice box early in the day at our usual activity time. It was Meema's first rice box experience. She loves to run her fingers through it!

But the big attraction this week was setting up the corn box. 150 pounds of corn from Tractor Supply (which we will later grind for bird and chicken feed for the winter) + one of our sandboxes = 3 very happy children (the 15yo checked it out, ran her fingers through it, said, "Cool", and went back upstairs). I suspect we will be spending a lot of time in here before the weather gets too cold.

Friday: Craft day. Button trees. Mama got to try out the block crayons for tree drawing. On my list of things to do this fall is to watch the block crayon tutorials and learn some drawing techniques. Drawing is definitely NOT my strong point!

And the book box came! This is definitely one of the highlights of every month!

Ana's developed an obsession with (1) putting everything in baggies, and (2) lining everything up. I almost always have to step over lines of toys like this now.

Hemlock Hill Playschool - Week 2 - The Bun/Gingerbread Man

Hemlock Hill Homeschool - Week 1 - Little Red Hen

We started our first "official" year of playschool on September 1st, with "The Little Red Hen" as our theme. I had been struggling with creating a rhythm that worked for both the littles (2 yo and 7 mo), and both bigs (15 yo and 11 1/2 yo), but once we got going, everything fell nicely into place.

We have a daily rhythm: Wake up, nurse, get dressed
                                          Drive K to high school, grab the stroller and mei tai and walk H to the
   intermediate school across the street
                                          Come home and have breakfast
                                          Nap for Meems, circle time & activity for Ana
                                          When nap is over, outside time, feeding the chickens
                                          Snack
                                          Nap for both Meems and Ana, mama's time to work
                                          Lunch with more outside time (lunch is usually a picnic on the deck)
                                          Pick up Holden and Kenna from school
                                          Errands and/or playtime
                                          5:30 - 6:30 is time for the big kids to play with the little kids; I cook dinner
                                               and clean the house
                                          Dinner
                                          Play time/lots of reading time
                                          Bed

and a weekly rhythm:       Monday = playgroup
                                         Tuesday = cooking/baking
                                         Wednesday = painting

Circle time - We have some verses and songs that we will sing throughout the month of September. We do a quick calendar and weather chart. Then some songs and verses related to the Little Red Hen and grains, a little red hen matching game, and a telling of the little red hen with finger puppets.

I couldn't find a good finger puppet for the little red hen, so I improvised - I colored a little yellow chick finger puppet red with beeswax crayons. Ana was smitten.

I get a lot of questions about sizing - and sometimes it can be hard to say what size is best. The weigh range is a guideline; the waist, rise, and leg measurements are always a better way to check.

These nappies/diapers are both the same size (small), even though the babies are far from it! AnaSofia (aka Poppyseed) is almost 23 months old, and about 26 pounds; EmiRose is almost 8 weeks old, and about 10 pounds.

I actually can't believe Ana cam still fit into the smalls. Holden outgrew the smalls by 3 months old, at about 15 pounds. He had chubbier legs by far.

Emi is just starting to fit into the M/L size that Ana wears
