The 35km trail run occurs on the iconic Table Mountain and covers mostly single track as well as a few kilometres of jeep track and tar. Competitors must conquer many hills, a steep scramble, mountain streams, fynbos slopes and indigenous forests. A tough challenge for experienced runners, competitors were allowed to enter individually or as a team of three, splitting the distance between them.

This year, Bruce Arnett took the men’s number one spot, finishing comfortably ahead of his competition and setting a new record time of 3:48:12.

The men’s team competition saw Barry’s Team and Team Contego destroying past records. Mike Bailey of Barry’s Team secured their win with a new record of 3:16:00.

The Salomon women’s team sped past both male and female teams and became the first women’s team to break the four hour barrier with a time of 3:58:44!

The competition for the number one spot in the woman’s category was a different story, however, with Katya Soggot and Karoline Hanks fighting it out throughout for the number one position. Soggot managed to take the win with a time of 4:31:12, with Hanks finishing at 4:37:51.

The crowd was entertained by ‘Chicken man’ during the prize giving, who handed out the prizes from The Crazy Store, Salomon and Cape Storm. Over 80 indigenous trees were given away as trophies to the various winners, honouring the beautiful surroundings in which runners were able to compete.

Entries for the Table Mountain Challenge 2011 can be made from 1 April, so for those who want to take part next year, let the training begin!
