Trying Something Different

Choosing a summer holiday is rarely easy and it is perfectly legitimate to question just what Menorca holidays have to offer.
Spain and the Balearics
Menorca is a small island in the Balearic group sitting in the dazzling blue Mediterranean. Yes, it's true that there are a large number of such Mediterranean islands, but Menorca is unique and may offer you a very different type of holiday. For a start, this island has a very diverse history. Even the British ruled here for around 50 years and contributed something of their culture to the melting pot that includes the Romans, Moors and Spanish. In fact, the British admiral that failed to prevent the French from seizing the island in the 18th century was subsequently court-martialed and shot for his actions - indicating that, even then, many British people didn't like the idea of leaving the island once they had arrived!
All this history has led to the island having a very different culture to others in the Balearics. The prevailing feeling is one of relaxation and enjoyment but without the rather frenetic holiday atmosphere that is prevalent on some other islands.
Things to see and do
The capital of Mahon has one of the best natural harbours in the world and the town itself is a great mixture of charm and personality. It's easy to spend a lot of time simply browsing the streets and enjoying coffee and drinks in the many bars and cafés.
As you would expect, by virtue of its location, the sea heavily influences Menorca holidays. There is a range of resorts, including the well-known Son Bou, which have great beaches and a range of associated activities. As a general rule, in Son Bou, just as per the wider island, the beach emphasis is on family relaxation rather than the sometimes frenetic pace of a sun, sea and sand holiday.
Of course, Menorca holidays don't just have to be about beaches. If you would like to know more about the culture and history of the island, the Museum of Menorca in Mahon is certainly worth a visit. The old town of Ciudadela is also a great attraction with its ancient architecture and its castle. It is well worth setting aside a day to explore.
Around the island you will also find a large number of caves. Some of these were once used for burials while others were occupied as homes. In fact, some are still occupied as homes to this day!
Are Menorca holidays for you?
This island typically appeals to people who prefer relaxation and tranquility on holiday rather than non-stop partying. There are certainly plenty of opportunities and areas where the young and energetic can let off steam, but that is not the overriding culture of the island. Menorca holidays may give you a chance to have a Mediterranean island experience of a type you perhaps thought had long since disappeared.

Hiking is a key pastime for many tourists returning to Menorca of the Balearic Islands, because of its totally unspoilt and wild terrain. Menorca has a lot of untouched natural landscape and many virgin beaches which makes Menorca a fabulous place to visit.
The island offers some of the best places known places for hiking across the whole range, from the casual holiday maker who is simply looking for a change to the night clubs and sun bathing, to the more experienced hiker who lives for their pastime of feeling the earth beneath their feet, and taking in all of the sights, sounds, and fragrances of this ancient island.
To be walking in total tranquillity, bathed in the light of a golden sunrise or sunset across the horizon is all that some people crave for. Let us not forget however, that to reach such unspoilt places, no matter where we are in the world, a car is usually necessary to get there in the first place.
The Cap De Favaritx, which is situated on the rugged and unspoilt Northern coastline is one such unspoilt walkers dream, but, it is some 17km North of Mahon along the motorway the Me - 1, which then leads onto the cf - 1 road.
Splendid isolation of this area is its key word, with no tourists, and several isolated beaches, which are obviously therefore without facilities, but the experienced walker would be well prepared for that. For people who love exploring new and exciting places which are peaceful, with the possibility to sit and relax within the stunning surrounding.
If bird watching is your passion, where they are allowed to live and breed without any outside interference, then this is the place to visit with your camera and long range lenses ready for action. Here you will find many species of birds and flora making it fabulous places to relax and see unique attractions.
As a magnificent back drop to your peaceful and exhilarating day, where you had left the 21st century behind you, as you had studied nature in its best dress. It consists of stunning scenery in and around Menorca, magnificent places to discover whilst strolling through the rock cliffs and virgin beaches.
With you now watching the sun set in total silence, other than perhaps listening to the gentle murmur of the sea kissing the beach, and you were within visual distance of Car de Favaritx light house, you will see its timeless beam of light flashing out across the sea.

The beautiful and serene Mediterranean island of Menorca with its contrasting scenery ranging from pine forests to rolling meadows, with thickets of olive trees, rugged coastlines, golden sandy dunes, deep ravines, prehistoric caves, and wetlands rich in lush plant life serves as a unique haven for such a great diversity of wildlife that it was officially designated a protected Biosphere Reserve in 1993. With a notably more temperate climate than other islands in the Mediterranean due to its sea wind exposure and low-relief landscape, the pristine island of Menorca has the unique ability to attract and support a wide range of flora and fauna.
Birdwatchers, photographers, snorkelers, botanists, vacationers and hikers trekking across the countryside exploring Menorca soon discover that the picturesque and relaxing island is not only rich in culture and history, but a nature lover's dream with hundreds of species of exotic flowers, animals, butterflies, reptiles, trees, coral reefs teeming with life, and migratory and indigenous birds often filling the sky overhead, including numerous soaring and majestic birds of prey.
Conservationism and preservation of the environment are a high priority in Menorca which features five parks and nature reserves, including a marine reserve, and 19 other areas of special interest with the most significant and popular being S'Albufera des Grau at the northeast end of the island which encompasses wetlands, farmland, and coastal regions, offering a network of trails through marshes and lagoons amidst indigenous Holm oaks and strawberry trees to make it easier for visitors to witness the natural habitats, including the breeding grounds, of a large number of species.
Keen observers might encounter booted eagles, red kites, hawk owls, Egyptian vultures, grasshoppers, king quail, mallard and white-headed ducks, stripeless tree frogs, ravens, woodchat shrikes, falcons, buzzards, terrapins, osprey, grebes, stone curlews, Thekla larks, hoopoes, tawny pipits, pochards, and when the population of birds swells due to migration, golden orioles arrive, as well as red-rumped swallows, black headed gulls, swifts, and bee eaters from northern Africa that come to nest in the sand quarries, among many others. Menorca also has a substantial indigenous population of rare spur-thighed tortoises named for the spurs on either side of their tail which live wild on the island.
A variety of small and large mammals native to the island can often be glimpsed when traversing the farmland of Menorca, including weasels, hedgehogs, ferrets, bats, red cows, pine martens, and the magnificent black horses often celebrated as a symbol of Menorca and paraded by residents in the local fiestas. This impressive steely black breed of horse is muscular but slender and known for its lively temperament.
There is also a striking assortment of plant life no matter where you travel on the island, whether scuba diving underwater or visiting the rocky cliffs, unspoiled forests, or stark interior canyon land with its unique vegetation, lizards, and snakes. Although it is more difficult nowadays to spot the scarce carob, fig, or almond tree as they have become less prevalent due to being displaced by other species, abundant plant life has sprung up in their place at ground level in the woodlands, on the coastal rocks, and in the fields including colorful wildflowers in bloom, fragrant orchids, wild asparagus, blackberry bushes, juniper, sea daffodils, rosemary, prickly shrubs, carpets of soft grasses, wild saffron, brilliant gladioli, and vibrant beach lilies, to name only a few.
A jewel in the Mediterranean with its bounty of wildlife against a backdrop of breathtaking scenery and cultural treasures, Menorca is the ideal destination for nature loving adventurers and families on holiday who want a restful, unique, and truly memorable experience.

If you enjoy Mediterranean resorts that offer sweeping vistas of horizon-to-horizon high-rise blocks, nightclubs and vast amusement parks, then Menorca holidays may not be for you.
This island has worked very hard, for over 50 years or so, to retain an original Balearic charm and culture. Here the emphasis is, for the most part, on tranquillity and relaxation rather than the 24/7 'dance-till-you-drop' experiences that one may find in other parts of the developed Mediterranean.
Contrary to what some people may believe, each of the major islands of the Balearics has its own individual culture and history. On Menorca, the local people and authorities have always placed a high-value on preserving the natural beauty of their island - and this has paid dividends. Menorca holidays offer you chance to experience that authentic pre-development Balearic culture.
Of course, the island does have some developed resorts. It caters to people of all tastes, however the overriding emphasis is on families, security and a relaxed holiday experience. The capital city of Mahon is a charming melange of styles of past ages, and its narrow winding streets and cafes are well worth exploring if you are looking for a change from the beach. There are many things to see including one of the largest natural harbours in the world and a gin distillery.
Although not widely known, the British once held Menorca (Admiral Byng, who lost the island to the French, was court-martialled and shot for doing so), and you can still see British influence in some of the city's architecture. The island is also famous for its beaches, which some claim to be the best in Spain. Some of them have beautiful white sand and safe bathing - although it is always a good idea to check carefully with prevailing local safety guidelines.
Perhaps one of the great attractions of Menorca holidays is that it is relatively easy to get off of the beaten track and away from crowds of people. There are numerous opportunities for walking and experiencing the local wildlife and plant life. Perhaps one of the best-known examples is the now fully restored Cami de Cavalls which is an ancient coastal footpath that completely circumnavigates the island. It was originally used to help keep a look out for pirates and other invaders and today it offers some stunning scenery and the opportunity to nature watch.
So if your idea of a holiday is small and charming rather than big and brash, then Menorca holidays may be for you.

Every time we turn on the t.v we see conflict in the world, and i don't blame people for wanting freedom and democracy, but the last place you want to be is caught right in the middle of it when you are taking your two weeks of hard earned holiday. So, for this year at least we need to look at safer alternatives for our holidays, and the first place that springs to my mind is Menorca. Menorca is ideal for families and couples, but if you want a more hectic night life then head for Ibiza or Majorca. One things for sure, you will get the holiday that you wanted without tanks on the streets and curfews.

Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands and has seen much conflict since the year of 534 when the British first took control of the island. Since then it has been ruled by the Muslims, taken under the wings of its bigger neighbour Mallorca and plundered by pirates and the Turkish. Two more British dominations interrupted by a brief French rule, returned to Spanish sovereignty before yet again ceding to the British until finally it deservedly received its autonomous status in 1983.
The island these days is much more peaceful, settled like the megalithic stone monuments that adorn its land. Its visitors tend to be families and many resorts are geared towards this. It is also less modernised and has avoided the heavy commercialisation of Mallorca. Unlike its neighbour it is possible to find relatively peaceful places even during the peak season. Even though it is smaller than Mallorca it boasts more beaches than both of its other neighbours combined. And where the coastline gets rockier, fishing villages lie sleepily like a Sunday Morning.
The beaches on offer are plentiful and range from fine sand to rocky coves, some of which have children's play areas and shallower waters. There are also fun vessels for riding in such as pedaloes. Good hygiene is provided by showers and toilets. Accessories such as sun loungers and parasols are also available for hire. There are also more beaches that can provide that ideal piece of solitude to give you some privacy. Some of these coastal areas also provide water sports such as wind surfing, water skiing and snorkelling. And if you can charter a boat then diving in the deeper waters or dropping a rod can be a pleasurable pastime.
So far Menorca is predominantly painted as sun, sand and sea but a significant portion of the island is also used for pasture for cattle. Cyclists and horses can often be seen trekking the paths that criss-cross through the pine woods, meadows and scrubland that give way to spectacular views of the sea. Or you can stay unmounted and hike the trails that pave the beauty of Menorca.
The two major cities of Menorca are Mao (Mahon) the capital which is situated at the end of a large busy harbour and the other city is the ancient old capital of Ciutadella. The latter is steeped with history and is one of the oldest and largest towns in Menorca. The airport is situated in Mahon and it offers very good transfers to your final destination on the island. The shuttle service is the cheapest option. Cars are also available for hire and taxis lie in wait to whisk you away. The shuttle service and car rental can be booked in advance and can often be done at the same time as purchasing your flight tickets.

Villas in Menorca provide the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This quiet island has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere - but you'll find a huge range of water sports, cycling and hiking on offer during your stay.
Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands and is known for being less crowded than sister island Mallorca, while still being home to a vast number of glorious beaches.
And while the ambience here is tranquil, you'll find there is plenty of scope for lively adventures in the great outdoors during your stay in villas in Menorca.
If you're keen to explore the island's fantastic Mediterranean landscape, why not hire a bicycle and set out on two wheels? You will find plenty of locations from which to hire bikes - and if you plan to spend several days cycling, you may find hiring for a week is cheaper than doing so on a daily basis.
Among picturesque mountains, you will be able to admire the view of the gorgeous unspoilt countryside and cycle through the small fields that make up much of the island's interior.
If you would rather explore on two feet, there is plenty of scope for hiking during your stay. Indeed, the island boasts a vast range of routes catering to every taste. Whether you would like to meander through the ports and stroll along the coast or tackle a more mountainous area, you will find something for you.
Of course, one of the main draws on Menorca is the stunning array of water sports on offer. Sailing is one of the most popular - something encouraged by the island's excellent harbours. You can hire boats from one hour to a period of weeks, depending on how long you want to spend on the water.
Meanwhile, you will find the likes of water skiing, scuba diving, wind surfing and sea kayaking all on offer for you to try your hand at.
And of course, you can always simply spend an afternoon relaxing on the sand if you wish.
For a great choice of outdoor activities, a relaxed atmosphere and fantastic weather, villas in Menorca are the perfect choice for a tranquil getaway.

Finding the right family break can sometimes be difficult, but with villa holidays in Menorca you can be sure of a trip the whole family will enjoy.
Menorca is an island close to the more well-known Mallorca and is home to a large number of fantastic beaches that both adults and little ones can enjoy.
And alongside the sumptuous sands and wonderful weather you'll find that there are plenty of other activities which parents and children can enjoy together, from relaxing, scenic walks to lively water sports.
The most obvious place to start your family villa holidays is the beach. By travelling to Menorca, you will have over 100 to choose from. While many of the beaches can get a little crowded in high season, those towards the north are often a somewhat quieter.
One of the best things about the beaches here is their shallow waters and sloping sands, which makes them ideal for young children.
If you're keen to see some marine life during your trip, why not step off the sand and climb aboard a boat? There are plenty of glass-bottomed vessels that sail around the island, giving parents and children alike the chance to see exciting creatures.
Travelling to the capital city Mahon can be ideal for older children, as they will be able to discover the local markets and shops.
Meanwhile, Los Delfines Aqua Park in Cituadella is a firm favourite with kids of all ages.
Exploring the island on two feet is also a fun activity for families. You'll find that there are lots of fantastic walking routes here, whether you'd like a leisurely stroll along the coast or if you're keen to venture inland to see the scenic fields or the mountains.
Similarly, cycling is another great way to discover more about the island together - and it can be particularly good if you're keen to explore a little further afield from where you are staying.
It may be that you think you know the Balearic Islands and Menorca, however, looking at Son Bou holidays may convince you otherwise. The resort is on Menorca's southern coast and is roughly a 30-minute drive from the island's capital in Mahon.
At first sight, Son Bou just looks 'different'. It has a noticeable absence of high-rises and mega-developments, although in fairness, Menorca as an island has generally worked hard to avoid some of the destructive development that its sister islands of Ibiza and Majorca have inflicted upon themselves.
The first thing you'll notice is a superb sandy beach, stretching away over two kilometres. Many aficionados say that it is the island's best beach, and it would be hard to argue with that assertion. At one end, in the distance, there are two larger hotels. For the most part, however, the overriding impression is of a very small, laidback and modestly developed resort.
If you are just arriving on day one of your Son Bou holidays, the second thing that is likely to strike you is that it looks and feels like a location designed for the slightly more mature and perhaps even affluent holidaymaker. Sitting a little back from the main resort itself, heading towards the base of some hills that sit behind the town, is the location called San Jaime. This area consists of some nice good standard family-type accommodation and a range of shops, bars and children's entertainment facilities. The emphasis is on peace and restrained family or mature fun.
Further up the hills behind San Jaime is a residential area consisting mainly of villas and superior accommodation. Some of these will offer excellent facilities and amazing views; though those at the very top may be a rather demanding walk from the sea.
One of the truly great things about Son Bou holidays is that the entire area has a completely unspoilt feel to it. Some of the countryside behind the beach is protected and consists of marsh and scrublands where you will be able to see a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Just a short stroll into the countryside, some of the paths will allow you to see a range of plants and flowers that you are unlikely to come even close to seeing back home (though do remember that the number of species visible or in flower will depend very much upon the time of year).
Son Bou holidays may not suit those looking for a riotous nightlife or special 'drink until you drop' nights out. The emphasis is on family holidays and relaxation so if you're looking to chill out, Son Bou holidays may be for you.

Menorca has only 62,000 inhabitants on its sunny Mediterranean island with the Mediterranean sun shining down on its impressive whitewashed homes, reflecting the dazzle of white all around. The complementary lush countryside against the bright blue sky and turquoise sea brings a relaxing atmosphere to this amazing island with just these basic colors of Menorca: white, green and blue. Stepping on the island is like reaching your favorite destination, such as in the Promised Land effect, as the locals and everything else are nice and simple. However, it's very strange that Menorca is not as renowned as other Spanish regions in the eyes of worldwide tourism.
About the island
Menorca's coastline is ever changing with its solid rocks, coves and beaches that are magnificent and relaxing. Some are secluded and away from public scrutiny while others are up for discovery, with many taking on some form of development at the moment. This island is only 47 km by 15 km with a 200 km coastline. As such, it is all coasts for Menorca. The only factor that is constant on this island is the Mediterranean Sea, which gushes all around. It is an ideal spot for all water sports, with the immense number of coves and naturally formed harbors. The landscape in general is quite level with Mount Toro being the highest point, where a shrine stands commemorating a patron saint of the island.
The shortest route to this island is via Barcelona by sea or via Palma by ferry. Regular flights from Barcelona make this island quite accessible in order to behold its unique English characteristics with Mah architecture on the local houses. The northern port side holds the San Antonio Estate or better known as the Golden Farm, which was purportedly, by legend, Admiral Nelson's residence while on the island.
Spots of Interest in Menorca
Mercada which has only 3,000 inhabitants lies inland of the island with Es Migjorn, 9 km away and the amazing Arenal den Castell beach 10 km away.Ferreries, having 3,076 inhabitants, is located right at the island's centre, with its pretty and picturesque white and red houses. Cala Sant Galdana is a cove close to Ferreries that gives a breath taking scenery amongst the rocks and lush pine trees that are over 100 years old.Ciutadella is an extremely traditional fishing village with 19,311 locals and a cathedral, a pre-historic tomb and excellent beaches.
The tomb of Els Tudons is the biggest among its kind and the preservation works have been very commendable. It is surrounded by scaling pine groves, amidst a large port that has been naturally developed. It is a summer holiday spot that has grown in popularity.Punta Prima is where you'd want to enjoy the soft beach of fine sand.
With snow blanketing the country in recent weeks and the doom and gloom prevailing at home, many of us are looking to holidays abroad for something invigorating and refreshing. Most people think of somewhere warm and sandy, longing for a tan and a good book on the beach, but holidays like that can feel stilted and predictable. We take a look at Menorcan holidays, which offer a superb beach experience, but also have something special in spring and all year round. The great variety of flora and fauna on the island make it stand out from more run of the mill beach holidays. Menorca's great diversity can be seen throughout the island, and we count down the top five natural sites that you can explore while there…
5. The Countryside around Cala Galdana
Cala Galdana and the surrounding Cala's are situated in lush, verdant countryside that evokes the kind of rural idyll similar to traditional English farmland. Rolling fields melt into picturesque woodland in some of the most beautiful scenery in Menorca. Holidays in this region allow you to blend together the natural beauty of the region with the great beaches on the coast.
4. S'Albufera des Grau
S'Albufera des Grau is a nature reserve on the east coast of Menorca. In October 1993, Menorca was designated by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve, and S'Albufera des Grau is one of the best places on a Menorcan holiday to view this diversity. Hundreds of species of birds, lizards, trees, flowers and grasses carpet the area with a vibrant and beautiful landscape - a great site to visit on a nature holiday in Menorca.
3. The Centre for the Recovery of Wild Animals
An animal sanctuary close to Ciutadella, the Centre for the Recovery of Wild Animals rescues, aids and nurtures animals from the Island that have been injured. They offer people on holidays in Menorca the ability to see recovering animals and learn more about them. A great attraction for families, the centre also runs educational games and events for children about conservation and the environment.
2. Cales Coves
Cales Coves have over 100 caves for you to explore on your holiday in Menorca. Some of the caves are natural, others man made or a mix of the two, but all are breathtaking and surrounded by plants, animals and sea life. There is no set tour, so you can actually explore for yourself the majesty of these caves.
1. Diving on the Es Caragol Reef
Diving anywhere while on holiday in Menorca is sure to uncover rich plumes of undersea plant life and exotic fish of all descriptions, but for some of the best diving try the Es Caragol Reef. The reef is only 1 kilometre from the shore, and accessible to novice and experienced divers alike. It showcases some of the most amazing natural sights that Menorcan holidays have to offer, as well as being a great dive. The reef has also been a shipping hazard for centuries, and clings to many of the barnacle-covered hulks of ships to this day, teaming with fish who use them as a new habitat.
The island of Menorca is the second largest of the Balearic Islands. Due to being protected from development, Menorca is much quieter than the busier neighbouring islands of Mallorca and Ibiza. This makes the island an especially popular summer destination for families that want to spend a nice Menorca holiday in a Menorca hotel or a Menorca apartment and it really does allow them to enjoy a tranquil holiday away from it all.

Menorca's capital Mahon, or Mao as it is known to the locals, is the largest and oldest town in Menorca. This walled town is situated in an enviable position on the edge of a natural harbour. The town was named after the Carthaginian General Mago. The influence of the British occupation through previous centuries is particularly evident throughout Mahon and the neighbouring town of Villacarlos; with Georgian architecture and Chippendale influences to be found everywhere. The Golden Farm, which overlooks the harbour from the north side, was once home to Admiral Lord Nelson. This was where it was rumoured that he took refuge with his mistress, Emma Hamilton in 1799. He also worked on his autobiography while residing here.

Cuitadella was the old capital of Menorca, from the Moorish era to the 18th century. Here architecturally interesting buildings can be found lining the vibrant winding streets.

The scenic town of Mercadal can be found on the slopes of Mount Toro, Menorca's highest peak. Here many prehistoric sites and artefacts can be found, in contrast to several largely unspoilt beaches.

As you would expect from the unspoilt nature of the island, the many beautiful and individual beaches on the island are far less crowded than the ones to be found on Mallorca and Ibiza. The majority of the more family friendly beaches are to be found on the southern coast. A lot of families spend their Menorca holiday there. The longest beach on the island is Son Bou, a three kilometre stretch of fine sand along a sheltered coastline. This beach is especially popular for swimming and sunbathing. There are several further beaches to be found on the island, examples of which are to be found at Els Canutells, Cala Binisafuller and the more exclusive Punta Prima. Along most the beautiful beaches of the Balearic Island, you can find several Menorca Hotels and Menorca apartments were you can have a geat time during your stay.

Cala Galdana which is situated near the town of Ferreries is commonly known as the "Queen of the Calas". This name is partly given due to its picturesque setting along a sheltered bay, with a backdrop of pine trees. Another reason for this is that the beach affords a larger selection of tourist facilities such as bars and restaurants, although still not on the commercialised scale of many other Spanish resorts. This resort also caters for the more adventurous tourist, seeking watersport activities. These facilities are also particularly catered for at Son Xoriguer, Son Parc and Arenal D'En Castell beaches.

For those tourists who wish to do more than laze on one of these beautiful beaches, there are plenty of other activities and places of interest to explore on the island. Many popular sites which tourists are attracted to can be found in and around Mahon, such as a visit to the popular Xoriguer Gin Distillery, where free samples can be enjoyed by those who may be interested! Situated in the outer reaches of the old town, the Placa Alfons III is a popular plaza lined with trendy, lively restaurants, cafés and Menorca hotels. There are also several museums plus the ever popular aquarium, situated in Mahon.
If you are looking for a relaxing and down to earth holiday Menorca has some of the most idyllic and unspoilt
beaches in all of Spain.
There are stunning secluded coves, surrounded by wild pine trees and
azure waters and enticing beaches with gently shelving
bays all within easy reach of most resorts.
This Island has more beaches than Mallorca,Ibiza and Formentera combined, and makes an ideal holiday destination for holiday makers of all ages.
Pack your beach bag and unwind on some of the most beautiful of these coastal strips guided by our experiences of the beaches and coves of Menorca.

Cala Galdana

Often referred to as the Queen of Menorca's Beaches Cala Galdana is a particularly well
sheltered keyhole bay. Backed by white sands, pine trees and tall cliffs the bay is protected and its
entrance well guarded.
The bay is excellent for swimmers. Cala Galdana is located virtually in the centre of Menorca's southern coast.

Cala Mitjana

This small natural cove faces south and is very close to Cala Galdana. It is reached from the same road by taking a left just before you reach Cala Galdana on the road south from Ferreries.
Just follow the track to the free car park and a short walk brings you to this quite cove with low white cliffs covered vegitation and evergreen trees. Cala Mitjana is ideal for all watersports.
To avoid the crowds, especially at weekends, keep walking along the coast to Cala Mitjaneta. Both beaches
lack facilities so remember to come well prepared for the lack of basic amenities.
Cala Mitjana is also accessable by walking east for 20 minutes from Cala Galdana.

Es Grau

This spectacular horseshoe bay with fine golden sands is backed by sand dunes that lead into the shady pine forests.
The beach is therefore close to the natural wetland reserve of Albufera with it's extensive wild bird population.
From Es Grau you can take a boat trip to the small island of Colom where you will find two more beautiful sandy beaches.
Situated in the east of the island it is only a short drive from the capital at Mahon, Es Grau must be on most visitors list of favourite beaches.

Son Bou

This beach is renouned for its length and the beauty but most visitors miss much of its appeal as they stay close to the hotels at its eastern end. Backed by sand dunes, and freshwater marshes teeming with bird life including the famous Ducks on the nearby freshwater lagoon you can walk along its full length to San Tomas in little over an hour.
All types of watersport are catered for from the infamous Banana Boat to Sub Aqua courses which are available here although you should take care to check the conditions for swimming as there are dangerous currents at times.
The weatern end of the beach, away from the hotels and the town, hosts an unofficial nudist beach.

Son Bou is reached from Alaior by taking the road south from the Me-1. As you approach Son Bou look out for the caves in the cliffs as you pass through the tunnel. Originally burial chamber they now have a place as holiday homes for local people.

Cala Pregonda

Just to the west of Fornells on the North coast of Menorca|Menorca's
northern coast} is Cala Pregonda. Located in a protected area of natural
beauty you will find this gem of a beach.
Accessible only on foot a 20 minutes walk from Binimella
brings you to Cala Pregonda. The beach is a outstandingly beautiful stretch
of sand with rock formations and hills coated in Pine and Tamarisk.
No facilities are available at the beach but yourwalk will be well rewarded with an outstandingly Beautiful beach with space for all to enjoy the superb swimming on offer.
Nowadays one of the preferred options are the Blue Flag Beaches! Here are my favourites.
Cala Blanca, near Cuitadella
Cala Blanca is a sand beach 5 Kms away from the city of Ciutadella. The resort's name is derived from the colour of the sands which are virtual surrounded by low cliffs on top of which are villas, shops and cafes backed by topped by a small residential area and some shops in front of pine woods.
This beach can be reached by public transport or by car. There is a free car park close by. The easy access can result in the beach becoming crowded at weekends Access by car is simple as the beach is clearly signposted. The ease of access makes the beach crowded at times.
Cala en Blanes, near Cuitadella
The sand beach at Cala en Blanes is 4 Kms from Ciutadella. Nearby is the village of Torre del Ram as is the tourist areas of Los delfines, Cala Piques, Cala en Front and Cala en Brut.
Access by car is straight forward and Cala en Blanes is clearly signposted. A private car park provides free parking. You can also access the Beach by public transport.
Cala en Bosch, also known as Cala'n Bosch, near Ciutadella
This is the most westerly resort on the south coast of Menorca, next to Cap d'Artrutx. In good weather conditions you can see the coast of Majorca from this beach of fine grained white sand.
Access by car is straightforward and Cala'n Bosch is well signposted. A private car park provides free parking and you can also access the beach by public transport.
Cala Galdana also known as Cala Santa Galdana, near Ferreries
Cala Galdana is refered to as the queen of Menorca Platjas (Beaches). A wonderfully sheltered keyhole bay with white sands, pine trees and high cliffs guarding its entrance. This Menorca Beach has access for disabled people. It has excellent conditions for swimming and the eastern side has good shade in the morning. Cala Santa Galdana also boasts a fun Water Park and a children's playground.
Access by car is effortless just follow the signs. Private cars can be left on a free parking area. You can also travel to this beach by bus.
Caleta d'en Gorries also known as Sa Caleta, near Cuitadella
Caleta d'en Gorries is two kilometres from Ciutadella, between Torre des Castellar and Cala Santandria, next to the village of Cala Santandria. The name caleta refers to its very small size. This inlet is surrounded by residential houses and Villas. The water is calm, clean and transparent, and the sandy beach slopes gently. It is quite crowded at time and is popular with locals and tourists. Access by car is easy just follow the signs. Private cars can be left on a free parking area. You can also access this beach by public transport
Platja de Santandria also known as Cala Santandria, near Cuitadella
Platja de Santandria is four kilometres from Ciutadella, between Caleta d'en Gorries and Cala Blanca.
This region is known for its prehistoric caves. Folklore tells that the name of this village was given by a Christian prisoner wounded by a Moor captain. Whilst recovering from his wounds he named this coastal corner Sancte Andrea. This inlet near Cape d'Artrutx is not very big and does become very crowded. The beach is sandy and has access for the disabled. Access by car is effortless just follow the signs. Private cars can be left on a free parking area. You can also reach this beach by bus.
Platja de Son Xoriguer, near Ciutadella
Platja de Son Xoriguer is 12 kilometres from Ciutadella, close to Punta de sa Guarda and Titina. These two residential districts add to the data that Ciutadella is the municipality in Menorca with the largest tourist activity. The area has more that half of the total hotel beds on the island. This sandy inlet is the shape of a shell, despite the fact it is not very large. Access by car is easy just follow the signs. Private cars can be left on a free parking area. You can also access this beach by public transport.
Son Bou also known as Platges de Son Bou, near Alaior
My first holiday in Menorca was at Son Bou. Perhaps that is why this shore is one of my favourites. However I like to think that my feelings are more analytical. The beach at Son Bou has access for the disabled. Its golden sand runs for almost 2 miles, to San Tomas. This is one of the southern beaches which is well served with a range of amenitiesat the eastern part.
The further west you move the less developed it becomes. In this area nudists converge on this unofficial beach. In the east the beach is backed by Son Bou itself. Here there is an immense car park.
This combination results in the eastern end of the beach becoming very crowded chiefly at the weekend.

Author Resource Box: I have run websites for almost ten years and latterly have developed MenorcaMinorca due to my love for this very special Island.
I personally favour VillaHoldays but Menorca is a very flexible Island. From its vast choice of beaches to its great history over more than 5,000 years.
I love it diversity such as its wide variety of accommodation ranging from old farmhouses, now converted into hotels, to the simple self catering apartments in most resorts. I do believe that Menorca really has something for everyone.
Many people know this pearl in the Mediterranean not even by name, this is the second largest Balearic island, larger than Ibiza. Mass tourism has barely caught Menorca, so there are few eyesores. In 1993 Menorca was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and half of the island is a nature reserve. The most beautiful beaches and the cleanest water of the Balearic Islands make the heart of all nature lovers beat faster. Even the interior is worth exploring , Gorgeous solitary nature trails invite you to breathe and relax. Ciutadella is one of the two major cities with 22,000 inhabitants. The old capital charges with its Mediterranean flair and its princely houses in the center to stroll by. The current capital of Mahon, which is approximately equal to Ciutadella, in size. Again, there are plenty of streets that are ideal for strolling and shopping. Mahon also has one of the largest natural harbours in the world. It is said that mayonnaise was invented in Mahon. France on the cold than the mixed sauce "sauce Mahonaise (Mahon'sche sauce) conquered the world.
Old buildings and places of worship are up to 4,500 years old and worth the entrance fee. Let yourself be captivated by the mystical atmosphere of the Taulas. They are T-shaped stone monuments that remind you a bit of Stonehenge. They exist only in Menorca and about 30 of them are on the island. In heavy seas, a trip to the lighthouse Favaritx in the extreme east, where the foaming waves crash against the rocks and the wind ruffles your hair. The landscape of dark slate is unique in the Balearic Islands. Not far away, yet very different is the nature reserve "s'Albufeira" in the North East with its freshwater lake and its bird life. In the north-west a barren rocky desert, which can be reached via a road to the lighthouse of Punta Nati. In the north there are beaches and sand dunes covered with red, while in the south by cliffs and coves with white sand is the norm. The center of the island is very hilly and the trail up the mountain Santa Agueda (260m) is recommended not only because of the views of the mountain. The road goes over a stone pavement, which had been laid by the Romans 2,000 years ago. Menorca is recommended for those who love excursions, enjoy nature and seek peace. Enjoy your holiday in Menorca!
Sometimes the hot summer sun can put a stop to too many days out and local discoveries whilst on holiday in the Balearic Islands. Many holidaymakers from far and wide book their trip for spring time as to enjoy the calm, tranquil weather and beautiful scenery. Menorca hotels have many amazing deals on during this time of year so make sure you take a look!
The smaller relative to Mallorca, Menorca is simply charming in the spring time and the place to be if you like nature and the great outdoors. The island is alive with the colour of wild spring flowers at the end of March and mid-way through April and local birds such as Shrikes, Hoopoes and Larks bring in bird-watchers from all over Europe. Mahon's deep-water harbour provides you with the opportunity to take a trip in a glass bottom boat to spot impressive sea life and feel the cool sea breeze (unheard of during the hot summer months). For 10 Euros a day or 42 Euros a week, you can hire a mountain bike and explore Menorca's stunning landscapes, pretty fields and medieval pathways whist taking in the hillside aroma of thyme and lavender.

For seven nights you can stay in the charming three-star Villa Amarillas which offers you a self catering experience only three kilometres from Ciutadella. A short walk from a delightful sandy cove, Villa Amarillas also has a swimming pool and beautiful gardens in which to relax. The staff are extremely friendly, polite and willing to help with your needs. There are many fantastic Menorca hotels for you to choose from.

Along with sombreros, sandy beaches and warm sunshine, Majorca is also known for its stunning scenery which is thought to be at its best during spring time. Discover ancient history and tracks made by monks seeking refuge and solitude; enjoy trekking in the fresh breeze surrounded by the scent of delicate almond blossom. Spring time is thought to be the best time to explore Palma (Majorca's capital) as there is no oppressive heat so you can wonder to all the fabulous shops, museums, art galleries, bars and restaurants with ease.
Majorca hotels are reliable and friendly, try the three-star bed and breakfast Roc Linda Hotel offers you with a relaxing stay in the heart of Palma and Palma beach. This hotel claims to be suitable and popular for both couples and families; there is a buffet style restaurant, games and activities as well as a swimming pool and tennis court.
Not as busy as during the summertime - cyclists will love Ibiza in the spring! Beautiful flowers, scenery and forests will make your holiday feel both relaxing and adventurous. Clubbers will be pleased to hear the party scene is still active out of season although not as much so as during the summer. Head to Pacha for a great night out.
Ibiza hotels are in great locations and have many superb deals during the spring time. Marco Polo II Hotel is a two-star establishment great for couples, families or groups of friends. Located in San Antonio, Marco Polo is only 200 metres from the city centre. This hotel has great food and entertainment on a daily basis and the staff work hard to give you the best possible stay.

One of the very beautiful but lesser known places on the earth is Menorca - a Spanish island. It is a part of the Balearic Islands which is an archipelago. The name of the island is pretty literal in meaning - it means small. The island close to it, which is bigger than Menorca, is called Majorca! With sparse population of just close to 90,000 people, Menorca is a very peaceful island. Of recent, it has developed as a tourist attraction, thanks to the huge tourist flow that Spain attracts.
El Toro, which is the highest point in the island at about 30 meters, is one of the major attractions in the archipelago. The view from the top is simply awesome and fantastic. An island in the Mediterranean Sea, it witnesses a typical Mediterranean type of climate with sporadic climatic shifts to a surprisingly dry weather especially during the winters.
History of Menorca
History has never been far from Spain and same is the case with Menorca. Actually it was the historians and archaeologists who can be credited with advertising the island as a paradise for archaeologists. Minoans are known to have first graced the island who were themselves from a region known as Crete in the ancient times. Mediterranean culture has always been an influence in the island, in fact the whole of the Balearic archipelago. Interestingly, Menorca thrived on the loot by the pirates who inhabited the island! Until the Punic wars, piracy was unheard of, but soon after piracy became a major occupation. It was such a dreaded route once that trade almost stopped and the whole island became a haven for pirates!
The main population is concentrated in the largest city of Mahon which also houses the important tourism and travel departments. For entering the island from a foreign country, one must need to seek permission and necessary visa from Spain and then follow up with paper works in Mahon. A liberalized policy regarding tourism and tourists has opened up the economy such that tourism has become a main source for income on the islands. Other occupations are fishing and growing fruits in the higher altitude areas. The island was inhabited by almost fully Jewish population.
The island was identified as a biosphere reserve in the early 1990s with UNESCO giving the island, this status in 1993. Quite understandably, the island being a biosphere reserve has one of the most diverse vegetations that is observed in ocean nations having a Mediterranean type of climate. Development has largely been limited to tourism; office and commercial infrastructure is banned on the island owing to the sanctions imposed on it due to it being a biosphere reserve!
Culture
Menorca has culture which derives inspiration from Spanish as well as colonial cultures (because the island was a British territory in the early years). The most well known fiestas (or festivals) of Menorca are the International Opera Week and International Organ Festival in summer months. Ciutadella is a well known music festival held in the island. If you're seeking a place to completely relax in the laps of nature and the best hospitality, Menorca is the place you should go to!

On the north coast of Menorca is Fornells - this could be called the pearl of the Island as it is truly amazing town with a glorious harbour that usually surprises all those who visited it. This is a traditional town of fishermen that has major reference of the island thanks to its brilliant fish restaurants and unrivalled variety of nautical sports that can be seen and even practice in its sheltered bay. Like a few of the other towns on the island you will see white washed houses, which reflects on the inhabitants of the town as they have a calm relaxed nature and respect their surroundings. This is a long way away from large cooperate hotels which is a testament to how relaxed this town.
If white is one of the colours that defines this town then you will also see it contrasts with another colour that can be considered just as calming, the other colour is blue as that is what you will see a lot of. This is reflected by the waters of its harbour they are clear and blue and are tranquil like with their calm waves. The climate in Fornells is very pleasant most of the year is typically like the rest of the Mediterranean Summers are hot and dry and winters are cold but wet, although most of the year the climate is more summary than wintry
The bay of Fornells has four pretty unharmed coves and three small islands, in which the 'Sargantana Balear' that is a species of lizard that is synonymous with that region of the island also is part of the lizard species that can only be found on these islands and not on the main coast of Spain. The only way to get the coves and island is by boat. At the end of the bay is where the salt mines can be found, in the shallow waters this just adds to the brilliant ecological and landscape.
With the narrow mouth of the Harbour being protected by a narrow mouth so this means that marine and water sports activated are ideal to do here. In its calm waters you can practice windsurf, sailing, kayak and diving. The water is usually moderate and not troubling for surfing. There is loads of sea life so diving can be an activity that you might to see out, the same applies to kayak, which will enable you to explore unspoiled coves and the beautiful sea before you.

But it isn't only the land that offers all the fun, as this town offers many activities. There are a few adventure sports you can try such as hiking for those that want explore the town. Other activities that you can do are Horse riding, cycling, mountain-bike and golf; a lot of these have places that have professionals that can supply you with advice, training and equipment. Fornells is a great fisherman's town to go to it has so many little things about it that makes it special in its own right. If you're thinking about a holiday on Menorca, Son Bou and the area around it just might be for you. For a start, you can forget about large seafront developments, forests of high-rises, and all-night non-stop partying. This is a resort that aims at people looking for a quiet or family holiday - one that is more in touch with the coast, countryside and wildlife, than the latest fashions or dance crazes. Sound good so far? It gets better!
Getting there
Menorca is a small island with its capital in Mahon. That's where you'll also find the airport that will probably be your point of arrival. If you're driving yourself while in Menorca, Son Bou is easy to find and is about a 20 minute drive from the airport. If your transfers are by coach, the journey may take 30 minutes but also possibly a little longer, depending upon the drop-off schedule.
Once you're there
Son Bou is best described as a quietly relaxed resort, aimed primarily at families and mature holidaymakers. The beach is the longest on the island and some people argue that it is by far the best. The sands slope gently into the water making it ideal for children and non-swimmers, although, as almost anywhere in the sea, there may, at times, be currents. Taking local advice on the prevailing conditions is always advisable. The entire area is subject to strict planning controls and as a result, it retains a natural charm that is not easy to find in some other parts of the Med. Behind the beach you'll find freshwater marshes and opportunities to bird watch - including the local 'fat ducks' as they are affectionately known. Walking is also a great way to see the locality and there are numerous paths and trails that will let you get into the surrounding countryside and hills.
Passing the time
On Menorca, Son Bou is not regarded as a bubbling hot spot of constant frenetic activity, so you won't find fairs, entertainment complexes or giant TVs on the street corners. What you will find are a (removed 'few) small, discreet bars and a good selection of restaurants (in passing, don't forget to try the local seafood which is delicious) plus a few shops.
Nightlife is calm and based around the above sorts of establishments plus some that takes place through entertainment based in one or two of the hotels. What this means is that in the evenings you can typically stroll around in a relaxed fashion without having to compete for pavement space with hoards of people moving from one pub to the next. Of course, if you do suddenly become overwhelmed with the desire to jump into action, during the day there is a selection of beach activities including things such as wind surfing, jet skiing and pedalos to choose from.
Further afield
Of course, on Menorca, Son Bou isn't the only attraction. Over the centuries, many peoples including the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Moors, Spaniards and French, have ruled Menorca. It is not always widely known that the island was also British no less than three times during large parts of the 18th century. All these peoples have left their mark and that means there's lot to see.
Mahon is well worth visiting, having a number of attractions including the Museum of Menorca.
Ciudadela the old capital is a beautiful town that is also worth meandering around and taking in the sights, smells and sounds of the old winding streets plus the harbour. Don't miss the museum and cathedral. There are also other quaint towns, coves and tourist attractions on the island. You can be sure that you won't be bored!
Accommodation
Back in the resort, there are accommodation types to suit all tastes ranging from good quality hotels to family apartments and wonderful villas. So, if you're considering a get away from it all holiday in Menorca, Son Bou may well be able to offer you what you're looking for.

If you're looking for somewhere exciting to take the children in Menorca, Son Bou will probably be top of your list of attractions. The resort not only boasts the longest, sandiest beach in the Balearics, but also an exciting maze where your children can run away from the clutches of ghosts and goblins.
On the island of Menorca, Son Bou might be the perfect destination for your family to relax and unwind, but as is usually inevitable on a family holiday, someone suggests a trip to a nearby water-park and the peaceful reverie is instantly broken. Whether they're two or twenty it seems that children love nothing more than splashing around in water-parks and whizzing their way down log-flumes.
Menorca is lucky enough to boast two parks with water slides; one in Cala en Bosc and the other in San Jaime, close to Menorca's Son Bou resort. Club San Jaime is considered to be the number one children's attraction on Menorca and it really isn't hard to see why. The water sports in San Jaime are significantly smaller than those in AquaRock making the area better suited to toddlers and younger children. Children can bring buckets, spades and water-rings to the pool and spend some time splashing around; this is ideal for those who are perhaps a little too young to brave the slides and chutes. Parents will be pleased to hear that the Club San Jaime also has an on-site restaurant, and with outdoor seating you can sit and relax with an ice-cold beverage, while your children cool down in a completely different way!
While Menorca's Son Bou resort has enough to cater to the younger family. Parents of teenagers and older children may want to try the kamikaze waterslides at the AquaRock Park in Cala en Bosc. The twisting water-slides here are definitely not for the faint-hearted, and although you may not be brave enough to try the Black Hole, you can be certain that your children will put you to shame. Like Club San Jaime, parents can relax with a beverage in the on-site restaurant, but for those that bring their swimming costumes along there are also a relaxing Jacuzzi and a swimming pool that you can use. AquaRock has three swimming pools in total, although one is shallow for younger children. The third pool provides the most fun in the park, as twice an hour warning sirens signal that the wave machine is about to go off!
As with most places on Menorca, Son Bou has easy access to the water-park and it can be easily reached by car or public transport, with a connecting bus in the resort of Cituadella. If you're still not sure about braving a water-park then there is an alternative option - the beach at Son Bou! Menorca's longest beach has plenty of water-based attractions that will appeal to the whole family, and you don't necessarily have to get wet to try them. Pedaloes and canoes are available from most beachside vendors, and although Son Bou doesn't have a harbour, you can take child-friendly glass bottom boat tours from the nearby capital of Mahon.

Declared a biosphere reserve, it has a slightly hilly landscape. A long history of occupations by numerous series of invaders, and almost a whole century of British domination have endowed this island with a special atmosphere and a different cuisine. Here you can try African kouskous with British puddings, and also visit Mao, the place where French mayonnaise was made for the first time.
A great holiday destination
Mao, the capital of this wonderful island, can be found at 5 kilometers into the interior; it is one of the few Mediterranean ports. Life here spins around its many restaurants and coffee shops in "Plaza del Ejercito"; the shops are concentrated on the streets here, but also may be found in "Plaza de Espana". The old houses bear signs of British occupation between 1713 and 1802. In the town called Es Castell, 3 kilometers further, Fort Marlborought offers you an image of old times. Even more memorable are the 500 megalithic monuments, scattered all over Menorca Island. There are three main types: talayots (conical mounds of stone), taules (constructions with the shape of the letter "T" )and navetes (high gutters that look like a boat). These monuments date from the second millennium BC and used to be altars or funerary monuments.
Two impressive places
On Menorca island there are two impressive places, that bring tourists to visit them annually. The first is the habitat in Trepuc, with a taul high of about 5 meters, located immediately at the exit of the island's capital. The second important place is Naveta des Tudons, located at 5 kilometers from Ciutadella. Naveta des Tudons is the old capital of Menorca, an absolutely charming town.
The beach in Menorca
The beaches on the North coast of the island have reddish sand and pebbles. The South beaches, that attract the most tourists, have a finer sand. Although the south is more populated in terms of beaches, you still may enjoy a bit of solitude at "Son Saura"or "Cala Mitjana".

If you are planning for family vacations, staying at villas may be a great option villa costa brava, rent villas in ibiza are few of best options.
