1. The Maldives

For: Relaxation

The Maldives is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, about 435 miles South-West of Sri Lanka. It is a popular tourist destination because of the astoundingly beautiful resorts and scenery. In most cases you can stay in a private villa which sits out in the middle of the water – connected to the mainland by a small walkway. If you want to go somewhere to relax – this is the place to do it. The official language of the Maldives is Dhivehi, which is very closely related to Sinhala, the language of Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, you will have no problems speaking English in the tourist spots. Don’t forget to pack your laptop so you can read the List Universe while you are sipping margaritas on your private porch floating on the ocean!

2. Queenstown New Zealand

For: Excitement

In Winter or Summer, Queenstown is a fantastic place to holiday. In the Winter it is full of people there for the skiing, and in summer it is full of people there to take the white water trips down the Shotover river. I would also say that the food in Queenstown ranks as the best I have eaten in the entire world; though food in New Zealand is of an extremely high standard in general. There are a large number of hotels right on the waterfront of Lake Wakitipu (New Zealand’s longest lake and third largest). The water is bitterly cold (even in summer) – but it is beautiful to look at from your hotel window and if you can stand the cold, bathing is certainly allowed. Queenstown is also New Zealand’s jetboat and bungy jumping capital. And if you think the price is too high – you can always pop to Arrowtown right next door and try panning for gold in one of New Zealand’s old mining towns. Oh – and don’t forget, New Zealander’s are the friendliest people in the world.

3. Paris France

For: Food

Everyone knows that Paris is the City of Romance and Food, but it has that reputation for a good reason! The food in France is simply outstanding and almost unparalleled around the world. You can stay at very inexpensive hotels, or very expensive ones, depending on your budget; just make sure you leave enough money for the food and wine. Some of the things you will have to do: 1) eat macaroons at La Duree, on the Champs Elysee (you won’t be able to control yourself when you taste these things!), 2) eat ice-cream at Berthillon – the best ice-cream in the world (handmade entirely from natural ingredients), and 3) eat pastries at Pierre Hermé – the picasso of pastry. Don’t forget to check out Printemps – the incredible department store found on Boulevard Haussmann.

4. New York United States of America

For: Shopping

With the US dollar at an all time low, it is the perfect opportunity for non-Americans to travel to New York and pick up some bargains. In addition, you get to see one of the most beautiful cityscapes in the United States, and can experience the hustle and bustle of an incredibly busy city. New York has many state parks and two major forest preserves. Adirondack Park, roughly the size of the state of Vermont and the largest state park in the United States, was established in 1892 and given state constitutional protection in 1894. Major destinations include the Empire State Building, Ellis Island, Broadway theatre productions, museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and other tourist attractions including Central Park, Washington Square Park, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Garden, luxury shopping along Fifth and Madison Avenues, and events such as the Halloween Parade in Greenwich Village, the Tribeca Film Festival, and free performances in Central Park at Summerstage. New York’s food culture, influenced by the city’s immigrants and large number of dining patrons, is diverse. Jewish and Italian immigrants made the city famous for bagels, cheesecake and New York-style pizza. The city also boasts some of the finest haute cuisine restaurants in the USA.

5. Hong Kong China

For: Unique Culture

Hong Kong is frequently described as a place where East meets West, a meeting reflected in its economic infrastructure, education and street culture. On one street corner, there may be traditional Chinese shops selling Chinese herbal medicine, Buddhist paraphernalia or bowls of synthetic shark fin soup. But around the next, one may find theatres showing the latest Hollywood blockbuster, an English-style pub, a Catholic Church or a McDonald’s. The city’s cosmopolitan flavour can also be seen in the wide variety of cuisines available. While different varieties of Chinese selections, especially seafood, are most popular, there are also many European, American, Japanese, Korean, and other restaurants. Ethnic dishes served in cha chaan teng’s and dai pai dong’s are also popular. The people of Hong Kong take their food seriously and many top chefs make their way to the city to show off their talents to these discerning diners. The Hong Kong government also supports cultural institutions such as the Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

6. Venice Italy

Every time I have been to Venice I have had an amazing holiday. Not only is the city incredible for its history, it is incredible for its food, its architecture, and its uniqueness. I have been in both summer and winter and would suggest that either of those seasons is perfectly fine for a visit. In summer it gets very hot and crowded, and in Winter it is not crowded but can be a bit on the cold side. If you are interested in old Churches, this is the place to go – there is one around every corner. The ambience of the city is one of mystery and rich culture. I recommend the Hotel Bauer which is just a few meters away from the San Marco square (the heart of the city). One of the best things about Venice is that you can leave your hotel and just start walking – you don’t need to worry about maps as you will eventually find your way back to the hotel. This is also an excellent way to explore the tiny dark alleys. Be sure to go for a trip on a gondola – but be prepared to pay big for the privilege – it is not cheap – on my last trip it cost me 75 Euros for 45 minutes.

7. Pyongyang North Korea

For: Exclusivity

This one is for the intellect – so that you can one day say that you have been the last bastion of Stalinist communist. It is very difficult to obtain a visa to visit North Korea, and if you do, it will be an expensive holiday. But you will be in a very small group of people who can say that have visited. By all accounts the food is extremely good and plentiful. You will be waited on hand and foot, and you will have a tour guide with you the whole time to explain things (okay – they are communist agents, but they will still explain things). You can visit the large shopping center and watch people who are paid to shop (so they look prosperous) and if you time it right, you may get a chance to see the amazing Mass Games, which are held every year on the 15th of April at the Arirang Festival, to celebrate the birthday of the Dictator Kim Il-sung.

8. Cape Town South Africa

For: Beaches

Cape Town is the third most populace city in South Africa, and it is the most populartourist destination due to its good climate and natural setting. It is the home of the famous Table Mountain. Due to the city’s unique geography, it is possible to visit several different beaches in the same day, each with a different setting and atmosphere. Cape Town is noted for its architectural heritage, with the highest density of Cape Dutch style buildings in the world. Night life in the city caters for all tastes, with a range of restaurants and cafes that are generally recognized as including some of the finest eateries in South Africa (both in food quality and decor terms). Night clubs and bars abound with popular areas including the top end of Long Street and its immediate surrounds, as well as the redeveloped Cape Malay quarter, De Waterkant.

9. Sydney Australia

Aside from having the most deadly creatures in the world, Syndey is a wonderful place. It is vibrant and pumping at all times – though especially at night. If you like the nightlife – this is the destination for you. Australian people are very friendly and the crime rates are reasonable. You can go on a harbour cruise at night and have dinner while floating under the Sydney Harbour Bridge, or you can go out to the country side to see some amazing and unique flora and fauna. You can even spend an evening at the opera in the famous Sydney Opera House, home to the third busiest opera company in the world. Sydney’s most popular nightspots include Kings Cross, Oxford Street, Darling Harbour, Circular Quay and The Rocks which all contain various bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Star City Casino, is Sydney’s only casino and is situated around Darling Harbour.

Top 10 commercial cities in Chinese mainland unveiled

The Fortune magazine (Chinese Edition) conducted a survey on the top 10 commercial cities in Chinese mainland at the end of last year. The survey showed that Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Suzhou and Guangzhou were ranked the top five cities, which are located at the Yangtze Delta, the Pearl River Delta and Bohai Sea Economic rim respectively and represents China's dynamic economy. The top 10 also included Hangzhou and Ningbo in east Chin's Zhejiang province with the most developed non governmental economy and Dalian in northeast China, Qingdao in Bohai bay area and Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan province.

According to experts, the advantageous factors such as the geographical environment, governmental efficacy, talents and capital contributed to Shanghai's overall competitiveness. Depending on the advantages involving political status, talents and science and technology, Beijing has lured numerous transnational head offices. However, the commercial stress laid on by Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Ningbo, the environmental advantages enjoyed by Hangzhou, Qingdao and Dalian, and the success of export-oriented economy adopted by Suzhou make the top 10 cities become colorful stars in the stage of China's economy.

Of course, the weak points of the top 10 commercial cities cannot be ignored. There are still many factors that hamper the future economic development in China, for instance, Shanghai state-owned enterprises' (SOEs) lack of competitiveness with shortage of pioneering spirit, Beijing's weakness in city management, the unsound educational system in Shenzhen, the imperfect urban environment in Guangzhou and the slow growth of SOEs in Suzhou.

According to the survey, the top 10 cities enjoy the following commercial advantages:

Shanghai: Shanghai is not only the economic leader in China, but also an economic interaction platform for the economies of China and the world. The overall advantages of Shanghai are second to none in the country though it is high for commercial cost. Being the most dynamic economy in Yangtze Delta, Shanghai still processes great potentials for development.

Beijing: As a center for politics, culture, science and technology and economic decision-making, Beijing is always the first choice for the head offices of many transnational corporations. Although the environment and municipal administration need improving, Beijing still enjoys a good commercial prospect in light of its special status and the huge business opportunities brought along by the Olympics.

Shenzhen: The young city with immigrants has become the regional economic center in south China with extremely high economic growth rate, per capita income and labour productivity. Meanwhile the government administrative efficiency, economic opening up and the living environment in the city are also among the best in China. If closely following the changes in Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Pearl River Delta Shenzhen's development can still be expected.

Suzhou: By making full use of the chain reaction brought about by Shanghai and attracting foreign investment, Suzhou has achieved another economic miracle with its GDP exceeding 100 billion yuan or 12.1 billion US dollars after Shenzhen, which makes Shanghai suburbs feel deeply ashamed. Transnational research and development centers gathered there. Its future growth lies in if the potentials of local enterprises can be released.

Guangzhou: Being in the frontline of opening up and owning the tradition of paying attention to commerce with business environment, Guangzhou always boosts the highest competitiveness in South China. The competition and cooperation with HK and Shenzhen are also conducive to the development of Guangzhou. Another round of foreign investment has arrived. Auto making, shipbuilding, exhibition and flow of material will be the biggest driving force for Guangzhou's rejuvenation.

Hangzhou: Boasting the most prosperous non governmental economy in China, Hangzhou, capital of east China's Zhejiang province, has become anther major central city in Yangtze Delta next to Shanghai. Apart from the regional advantages, Hangzhou also has other competitiveness in terms of overall commercial environment, human resources and life quality. Controlling soaring commercial cost is supposed to be the top priority for the government in the near future.

Dalian: Being the best commercial city in northeast China, Dalian processes the conditions for sustainable development in terms of geographical position, environment, economy, human resources and the infrastructure. Furthermore, the state policy of revitalizing the old industrial zones in northeast provides Dalian with the most important development opportunity in history. The objective of building Dalian into an international shipping center in northeast China is not unattainable.

Qingdao: Like Dalian, Qingdao, a city that adopted opening up policy relatively earlier in China, not only enjoys the advantageous geographical position and urban environment, but also has cultivated a group of well-known brands such as Haier, highlighting the city's economic internationalization. Recently, its reasonable commercial cost and efficient governmental management have begun to draw investors from the Yangtze River Delta area and Northeast China.

Ningbo: The export-oriented non-governmental economy holds an absolute leading position in Ningbo, one of China's most dynamic coastal cities. Additionally, the marked GDP and per capita income, flexible economic structure and the business spirit of the local people are famous in the world.

Chengdu: Once the best city with the advantages of the first-class talents, scientific and technological environment in southwest China, Chengdu now is facing challenges from its neighbour Chongqing. Whether Chengdu could seize the historical opportunity of Western Development depends on the improvement of the government's management ability and how to develop its foreign-oriented economy.

How to Get to Perhentian Island

To get to the Perhentian Island or Pulau Perhentian (in Malay),The only way to go there is by the sea especially a boat services from Kuala Besut. Arriving on Kuala Besut jetty please come to our sales office (Anjung Holidays) nearby the jetty, and our staff will help and give you free information about how to get the boat and about the resort on Perhentian Island.
Boat from Kuala Besut to Perhentian Island take about 1/2 hour journey by fast boat and 1 1/2 hour by slow boat. Please click here for futher detail about boat to Perhentian Island.
you don't have to worry about miss the boat because there are many guest house or hotel around Kuala Besut. Car parking facilities are available at RM5/night on Kuala Besut.

Langkawi isn’t just one big island, but a collection of around 100 islands that form an archipelago. While most are uninhabited, a few have been designated for tourism so that visitors from all over the world can admire and appreciate the magical beauty of Langkawi. Pulau Payar Marine Park

A collection of four islands about 35 km (22 miles) south of Langkawi, the waters around the marine park is a dazzling display of corals and aquatic species such as moray eels, rock groupers, black-tip sharks and clown fish (think Nemo). The island is a fantastic place for diving or snorkeling. Land-lubbers who don’t want to set foot in the water can ride in boats with transparent fiberglass bottoms to watch the life below.

The forests on the island are ripe for exploration while the beaches are perfect for picnics and sun-bathing. The island is only accessible by speedboats. Pulau Tuba

Pulau Tuba is a beautiful, remote island that is home to a group of traditional fishermen. Though it is relatively undeveloped, there is a sole resort and home stay programmes among the fishermen. The island is a great place to do bird-watching and jungle-trekking.

Pulau Dayang Bunting

Its name translates to ‘Isle of the Pregnant Maiden’, and is the second largest island of Langkawi. Draped in verdant rainforest, the flora and fauna found here is amazing. A large lake on the island is believed to have magical properties; the water grants barren women fertility, hence its name. The water is also great for swimming. A cave called Gua Langsir sits here, home to thousands of bats, definitely worth an expedition or two. The island is accessible through a 15 minute boat ride from Kuah but plan your trips for a day as there is no accommodation available.

Pulau Singa Besar

This lion of an island may lack the size but it certainly makes up in heart. Contrary to its name which means ‘Big Lion’, the island does not house those giant felines. Instead it is a wildlife sanctuary for monkeys, deer, snakes, lizards and birds. The island is also rich in unique rock formations and mangrove plants. A one-day trip can be arranged where a guide will explain about the flora and fauna as you traverse the island. There is no accommodation but you are allowed to camp overnight with permission from the local Government.

Pulau Bumbon

The island is only ten minutes from the Kuah jetty; its beaches are pleasant and peaceful. Those who seek a truly secluded place should come here. You can get to the island by booking a day trip through a tour guide in Kuah.

Sign up to airline and travel e-newsletters so you're the first to see good deals.

Before you book remember that off-peak times will be cheaper and also check out what the weather will be like at your destination. Sightseeing in sweltering heat is not fun, but travelling in winter will mean less daylight to see the sights.

How to … pack the right stuff

Write down the phone numbers and addresses of close family on a piece of paper and put it in your wallet. In the event of an emergency, people always look through this first.
Remove old destination tags from bags to avoid confusion.
Find out how much luggage you are able to take. Most domestic flights allow two large bags and one carry-on bag per person with each piece weighing no more than seven kilograms.
Buy resealable food bags from the supermarket and use them to put toiletries. I'll save your clothes from any spillages.
Pack a medical kit with all necessary tablets — headache, flu and stomach.
If you're arriving at your destination late at night, pack your pyjamas on the top so you don't need to ransack your luggage to find them.
Don't forget an umbrella or a waterproof jacket. You can never control the weather!

The best way to get a taste of Italy is to be sure to include the "Big Three" on your itinerary - Rome, Venice, and Florence. Museums abound, including the wonderful Vatican Museums, housing the most extensive and impressive collection of fine art found anywhere in the world. You'll also want to include visits to The Spanish Steps, the renowned Trevi Fountain, the Via Appia Antica (Appian Way), Castel St. Angelo, and Rome's beautiful churches.

Dining is a joy, whether you're in search of a five-star restaurant experience or would prefer to take a seat in a small outdoor cafe on the Piazza della Rotonda and do a little people watching. Either way, the food is stellar!

Try to allow at least 4 full days to enjoy the capital city and if you're on an escorted tour, do a little research ahead of time to decide which sights you'd like to explore during your free time when specific activities are not scheduled.

Venice

Situated in Northern Italy, Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world and is often a top choice for honeymooners. But, of course, anyone can enjoy this spectacular city, which stretches across about 110 small islands along the Adriatic Sea.

You'll need at least two full days to see all the highlights. First time visitors to Venice will certainly want to hop aboard a gondola or a vaporetti (water taxi) and explore the city's system of canals, which take visitors past most of Venice's prime attractions. (The canals serve the same function as roads because Venice is a car-free city.) While on your canal tour, you can decide what you'd like to see once you're back on foot.

Top attractions include pigeon-filled St. Mark's Square, home to St. Mark's Basilica, the magnificent gothic Doge's Palace, and many other buildings and sites. You'll also want to make your way to the Bridge of Sighs, one of Venice's many bridges, known as such because it passes over the Rio di Palazzo and connects the old prisons to the interrogation rooms in the Doge's Palace. It was often the last place prisoners could view the city before their incarceration or death.

Be sure to sample the local seafood as well as the innovative pasta dishes. Venice is also known for its wonderful sweets, so you'll want to include a stop at a patisserie or two while exploring this breathtaking city.

Florence

Florence, the gateway to Tuscany, has become more and more popular during the past few decades. Always Italy's most cultural city, it's been as such since the Renaissance, when Florence families such as the Medicis sponsored artists like Michelangelo and others.

The centerpiece of Florence is the Duomo, or Santa Maria del Fiore. A must see, with its magnificent dome and baptistery, this is the architectural jewel in Florence's crown. After you've seen the cathedral, head to the Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge), the only to survive World War II, lined with interesting shops help up by stilts. And stop at the Uffizi Gallery, one of the finest art museums in the world, or visit the Academia to view Michelangelo's David.

Top Ten Best Tropical Island

I’m a beach lover. The sun and I get along quite well and there’s nothing I’d rather do than live on a tropical island. One of the main purposes of my travels is to avoid winter. I’ve been to islands all over the world, though there are still some paradises this nomad has yet to see.
These are the ten top islands and beaches in the world where people can sit back, relax, enjoy the sun, and wonder if they really should board that flight home.
The Seychelles
Located off the east coast of Africa, these islands are pure paradise. If anywhere in the world would get me to give it all up and live in a beach hut, the Seychelles. Perfect beaches, perfect water, tons of islands to choose from and all the seclusion you want. The Seychelles are my dream and should be yours too. This group of 115 islands offers everything a beach lover could ask for. Sadly, these islands are pretty expensive but I guess there is a price to pay for paradise. The best time to visit is during the cool season from May to September, when it rains less.

The Maldives
Located in the middle of the Indian ocean, this chain of 1,000 (200 are inhabited, and only 5 have any substantial population) is just a series of coral atolls that are barely above sea level. During the 2004 Tsunami, many of these islands were completely washed away. The government has build flood barriers to help lesson any future tsunamis. These little coral islands are surrounded by excellent diving and snorkeling, white sand beaches, and filled friendly locals. Private resorts litter the islands and a vacation here is also very pricey. However, Bangkok Airways offers cheap flights to and from Thailand. The best time to go to the Maldives is during November to May, when the weather is cool and dry. June through October sees wetter and hotter weather due to the monsoon season.

Ko Lipe
Located in southern Thailand, this semi-off the map island is one of my favorites. Here on Ko Lipe, the super friendly locals bring in the daily catch for amazing seafood as the island’s water is teeming with life. Accommodation is still basic and most places turn off the electricity around midnight. Close to the island is an a little island that provides excellent snorkeling opportunities. You may even spot a few reef sharks. Bathtub warm water and fine sand beaches kept me here for over three weeks. It will do the same for you. Visit during in November or March for the best weather and the fewest people. May through October sees a harsh monsoon season that shuts the island down. (There is a last boat!!). The best way to get there is by boat from Pak Bara.

Bali
This tourist mecca is voted one of the best islands in the world year after year. There’s enough room on Bali for everyone, the surfing is great, the food amazing, it’s dirt cheap, the parties are great, the locals some of the friendliest in the world, there’s a volcano to climb, temples to see- Bali has it all. Bombings in 2004 and 2005 back hurt tourism on the island but the government increased security and there has been few problems since. For those looking for a move active tropical vacation, Bali is the place to go. The weather remains pretty constant all year round, though April to October sees slightly drier weather.

Fiji
Though this country has some 322 islands, less than a third are inhabited. Most of the action happens in western islands but no matter where you go this is heaven. Most young people head to the Yasawa Island group. Anytime the name Fiji is heard, visions of beaches and tropical ocean dance in people’s head. There’s good reason for that- because this place is one of the best places to go in the world and with so many islands, you’re bound to find one you like. It’s a popular destination with young people and honeymooners with something for anyone. The temperature remains mostly constant through the year with cyclones occurring between November and January.

Tahiti
You know those pictures you always see of tropical bungalows in the water? That’s Tahiti. The name has long been synonymous with tropical paradise. One of the biggest honeymoon destinations in the world, Tahiti offers pure paradise and a lot of romance. Here you can relax in the sun, scuba dive, enjoy fine seafood, and take a morning dip right into the water from your bungalow. The island is expensive and caters to a more affluent tourist crowd. The weather is tropical all year round and very humid though May to October sees cooler temperatures.

Big Island Hawaii
Hawaii’s biggest island has everything you could ever want to do and more. But what separates it from the other islands is Volcano National Park. Explore volcanoes, climb through old lava tubes, and watch as new lava oozes into the ocean. Then there’s all the waterfalls on the island too. Big Island has it all. I mean it’s Hawaii- how could you go wrong!? The west season is from October to March though the weather is cooler. However, despite being located near each other, weather conditions on each islands can vary greatly so you never know what to expect!

The Cook Islands
Another south pacific island group (see a pattern here?), the Cook Islands are pretty far off the map. OK, not too far but they are considerably less visited than some of its neighbors. These tiny islands are named after James Cook, the intrepid man who discovered them. With few amenities, this place is the best place to find your inner cast away and escape modern life. The islands see similar weather to the rest of the area with temperatures hot and humid all year round.

Curacao
Located in the Caribbean ocean, this Dutch owned island is prefect. Voted one of the best in the Caribbean, Curacao is like being in tropical Holland. The town is built in the Dutch style but the surrounding areas are all tropical. Hit the beaches, lay in the sun, and party the night away. This may not be Gilligan’s Island but what it lacks in privacy it makes up for in romance and fun. The weather is pretty stable here. It’s always hot and usually sunny. If it rains, it’s between November and January. Don’t worry about hurricanes- it’s below the hurricane belt!

Perhentian Islands
Located on the eastern coast of Malaysia, the Perhentians are two islands. Both are stunning covered with a lot of palm trees, wide beaches, and crystal blue water. There’s not much to do here and visitors typically lay on the beach all day, resting from the night’s drinking before. It’s the perfect place to put up a hammock. A strong monsoon season limits when to go between March and October. During the other times, it’s best to head to Thailand where the weather is nicer.

The Dutch Wadden Islands

The west coast of Holland is almost a beach from north to south. The natural protections against the sea are the dunes. These products of wind, sun and water are one of Holland's most interesting creatures of nature. They are the natural habitat of endanger species and therefore well protected by the Dutch government.

The northern parts of the Dutch shore are the Wadden Islands. These Islands, Texel, Vlieland,Terschelling, Ameland and Schiermonnikoog are now considered as World heritage. This decision has a great impact of the people living on these islands. Due to the new regulations it will be more difficult to build, or to propose for building, industry or business permissions.

The Dutch Wadden islands are very popular among the German and Belgium tourists. Texel is the biggest Dutch Wadden Island, and is also the island with the most possibilities. The island can be reached by a ferry which leaves from Den Helder.

It’s a short journey by the ferry takes about twenty minutes. Texel is famous for its vast flocks of sheep and birds, and for the pleasant villages. The variation in landscape on Texel is such that the island is often termed as 'the Netherlands writ small'. These landscapes are worth seeing, too. Because
of their special value, the dunes of Texel have been designated as a National Park.

Vlieland is Next Island close To Texel. A great sandbank between Texel and Vlieland is the breading chamber of seals. Texel, Vlieland and Terschelling are situated close together. Yet those visiting these islands will discover completely different worlds. It's possible to hop between these islands by small ferries.

Between the islands and Holland is the Wadden Sea. The Wadden Sea is teeming with life. Twice a day, the current of the flood tide brings water from the North Sea, rich in sediment and plankton, much of which sinks to the sandy bed.

In addition, the shallow water of the Wadden Sea warms up rapidly in summer. This means that algae and seaweeds are able to grow quickly. They form the basis of the enormous wealth of food that supplies the inhabitants of the Wadden Sea -countless fish, birds and seals.

LOCATION:
Pulau Payar (Payar Island) is located some 1-hour away from Langkawi's Kuah town by boat. Normally boat operators will depart from Kuah town around 9:00am and return back from Pulau Payar around 2:00pm.

DESCRIPTION:
Most boat operators will stop at this beach. There is an extensive network of boardwalkthat connects from the beach at Langkawi Coral Pontoon to Payar Marine Park HQ. this beach is particularly beautiful, with crystal clear water and golden sandy beach. There is no food stalls here though, hence getting your food supply from your boat operator is vital.

Apart from swimming and sunbathing, the main highlight of Payar Beach is definitely the schools of different fish that throng to the area, mainly feeding on breads and crackers supplied by the snorkelers.

Also there is a colony of blacktip sharks at this beach which one can spot easily. What I noticed from my recent visit was that the sharks seemed to be getting bigger in size compared to my last visit 2 years ago. I wonder what will happen if the blacktip sharkskeep on bludgeoning in size. Either they will move to other islands such as Lembu Rock or Kaca Island, or they will continue to thrive with the abundant food supply at Payar Beach.

	Alliance-Capital 1345 Avenue of Americas A financial management and mutual fund company with 1 billion dollars in sales. This company is owned by The Equitable Companies which is one block over on 7th Avenue. I have a friend who does database programming for this company.
	ITT 1330 Avenue of Americas Owner of Caesar's and Sheraton hotels, this company was recently acquired by Starwood Lodgings in a dramatic and ongoing takeover battle in which this company's management refused to sell out to Hilton who desperately wanted it. I don't know what the management's beef was, but they were hell bent on never selling out to Hilton. This company also once owned Madison Square Garden, and the Knicks and the Rangers to go with it.
	RJR Nabisco 1301 Ave. of Americas Just a few blocks away from the other food and cigarette evil empire conglomerate, is this food and cigarette evil empire conglomerate. Hidden in this no name building is RJR Nabisco, maker of Camel and second largest manufacturer of cigarettes in the world. Also responsible for all Nabisco products, it has a revenue of over 17 billion. Coopers and Lybrand, one of the big 6 accounting firms is also in this building.
	CBS 51 West 52nd Who would ever think that hidden in this dark stone-cold building would be the headquarters of one of our favorite 3 original TV networks. Of course this is probably just where all the financial and executive decisions are made. The real action for this company is at their studios in Studio City and Hollywood in Los Angeles.
	Paine Webber 1285 Ave. of Americas One of the largest securities firms in the country, this company has 6.6 billion in sales. General Electric owns 25% of this company.
	Time-Life/Interpublic Group 1271 Ave of. Americas Both Time-Life and the Interpublic group are in this one building. Fortune, Sports Illustrated, Time, Life, and People magazine are probably all created in this building. To complement the magazine business going on in this building is the Interpublic group which is the first or second largest advertising firm in the world.
	1251 Ave. of Americas This building is part of a set of three enormous buildings on 6th avenue that are huge megaliths of corporate power. The other two are listed below. Although there may not be any interesting headquarters in this building, a lot of investment banks have offices here. In particular international wheeling and dealing seems to be the game in this building since a lot foreign banks gather here as well. Also Rolling Stone is in this building.
	Mcgraw-Hill Companies 1221 Avenue of Americas In the second of the enormous megalithic building is the Mcgraw-Hill companies. These guys are the makers of one of my favorite magazines Business Week and are a general provider of financial information as well as the fact that they make wonderful grade school, high school and college texts.
	News Corp. 1221 Avenue of Americas And in the third of these three monolithic buildings is the U.S. headquarters of the News Corps, from Rupert Murdoch's media empire. News Corp is the creator of the Fox network and owns 20th Century Fox and TV Guide and the New York Post. Although most of the action for this company probably happens at their studios in Century City Los Angeles, decisions on The Simpsons, X-Files, King of the Hill and Alley McBeal probably happen here.
	NBC 30 Rockefeller Plaza Across the Street from the News Corp and Fox is NBC. Here NBC has its studios for programs such as Saturday Night Live, Conan Obrien, Rosie O'donnell, and Dateline. Although it is called NBC, this company is entirely owned by General Electric as can observed if one looks at the very top of this building where in huge neon are the two letters "GE".
	Time-Warner And then down the street a little ways from Fox and NBC is the Time-Warner quarters, possibly the largest media empire in the world. The people in this building make the final decisions on Warner Bros. movies, HBO, CNN, TNT, TBS, WB 11, Time Warner Cable, and Time-Life magazines which is just down the street.
	Simon and Schuster 1230 Ave. of Americas Simon and Schuster is the book publishing division of Viacom and is just across the street from one of its biggest rivals Mcgraw-Hill.
	Amereda Hess 1185 Avenue of Americas These guys do oil exploration around the world, have oil refineries in the U.S. and then of course their Hess gas stations. All for a grand total of 8.2 billion in revenue. Not bad guys.
	Marsh & Mclennan 1166 Avenue of Americas Here is a moderately succesful insurance company with 3.4 billion in revenue. Like many other companies theyh are getting into the hot market of consulting as well.
	Price Waterhouse Here is another one of the big six accounting firms. I think 5 out of 6 of these accounting firms are in the New York midtown area within a 5 block radius of each other. These guys have a nice new building and do 5.6 billion dollars in sales. If I am not mistaken there is a graphical resemblance between their logo and the top of this building.
	Bell Atlantic And then of course, our favorite telephone company. The guys who install my phone lines and send me the most confusing bills are the lords of local phone calling in my area and possibly an evil bureaucratic empire. It depends on if they can get their act together. The company used to be called Nynex until it merged with Bell Atlantic last year to become the largest of the Baby Bells with 30 billion in revenue.

Sacred Art Museum

Sacred religious art pieces, including Gobelin tapestries, dating from the 14th and 19th centuries are on display here. This former chapel has served as a museum since 1958 and you will also find artwork dedicated to the city’s patron saint, the Virgin of Candelaria.

Casa Fuerte

Constructed by Don Pedro Ponte, it was a fortress that offered Adeje protection from pirates between the 16th to 19th centuries. Though it was ruined by fire in 1902, it’s archives, art pieces, and furniture were saved and moved to the Canary Museum in Las Palmas. Visit the ruins of this strong house and imagine what it must have been like when it was the center of Adeje’s political and economic world so long ago.

Barranco del Infierno (Hell’s Ravine)

This footpath in Adeje will allow you time to hike through an area that is both rugged from water eroding the volcanic rock and yet lush with plant and animal life. Ravines, caves, a waterfall, and the deepest gorge in the Canaries are all part of this trail in addition to numerous birds and other flora and fauna, some which border on extinction. The course is considered medium difficulty and a complete trip on the trail will cover 6,500 meters and take between 3 and 4 hours, but many would say that the spectacular scenery was well worth it.

Tip: Entrance to the path is €3 and you should reserve a spot ahead of time as they limit entrance to 200 people per day to help preserve the balance of the delicate ecosystem. The path is open from 8:30 am until 5:30 pm and more information can be found on their website.

Playa de las Americas

Home to much of the Island’s development, this resort area has it all: popular beaches with sand brought over from the Sahara and all the fun you’d expect nearby including restaurants and bars for when you’ve had your fill of lounging in the sun or enjoying the various water activities.

The main beach area - Las Americas I and II are blue flag beaches and you can enjoy parascending, jet skis, diving, swimming, sunbathing or even learn to surf here. A section of the beach is welcoming to naturists.

Note: Blue flag beaches have met certain criteria that ensure safety, water quality and environmental standards as set forth by the Health Department of the Canary Islands.

Animal Farm Granja

Here you can hop on a donkey for a tour of the farm and take in the lovely scenery of this working farm and banana plantation called La Caldera Del Rey – the King’s Crater. In addition to the donkeys, you will also see pigs, ducks, and goats. This would be a fantastic place to visit with children as they also have a swing park and climbing wall.

Tip: They are open daily except Friday between the hours of 10 am to 1 pm and 4 pm to 7 pm. It’s advised that you call ahead should you wish to take a 30 minute or 1 hour donkey tour of the farm.

Siam Park

This is the largest water park in Europe opened in 2008 and has a Thai theme. You could spend the entire day here enjoying the various water rides, beach and a meal at one of the 5 restaurants on site. Have you ever wanted to learn to surf? This is yet another wet option you can indulge in during a day at Siam Park. A free shuttle will pick you up at either Playa de las Americas or Costa Adeje.

Tip: A day here can be extra special if you reserve a private cabana. Fully furnished with plasma tv, wifi, showers, and including an all-inclusive bar & restaurant package combined with a view of the beach and Atlantic Ocean, this would make for a truly memorable day.

Jungle Park (Parque de las Aguilas)

Here you will enjoy daily free-flying eagle and birds of prey shows. This is also Europe’s only jungle where you can view the big, beautiful cats like white lions, panthers, leopards, jaguars, pumas and tigers. The park is also home to a variety of primates including gibbons, lemurs, chimps mandrills, and monkeys. A free shuttle bus from Playa de las Americas is available daily.

Tip: The park is open year-round from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Purchase tickets online for the best price.

Aqualand

As the name indicates, this is a water park with a variety of slides and water rides. A Dolphinarium is located within the park with daily dolphin shows. A free shuttle bus from Playa de las Americas is available daily.

Tip: Tickets may be purchased online. You might consider buying a combo ticket that includes admission to both this park and Jungle Park for some savings. It’s open daily from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Whale & Dolphin Spotting

Pilot whales live in the waters just off Playa de las Americas. Day trips can be arranged via private boat, catamaran, or yacht to see these amazing animals up close and in their natural habitat. Cruise reservations can be made online and usually include a meal and open bar.

Should you visit Tenerife with children or are just an animal lover, a visit to the Tenerife Zoo & Monkey Park might make for a fun and unique diversion. At this zoo, you have to chance to walk amongst the animals and feed them, so consider bringing along some nuts or fruits. Entrance fees are €10 for adults and €5 for children 5 - 12 years of age.

Beautiful year-round temperatures also make an island vacation great for golf enthusiasts. There are several 18 and 27-hole golf courses located in this region, including Golf Las Americas.

Nighttime Fun

But there is more to this area than just the sun and water fun. By night, you can enjoy some excitement at the local casino in the Casino Playa de las Americas located in the Hotel Gran Tinerfe or at one of the numerous bars and clubs found along Starco or the Veronicas Strip. This is not a sprawling club crawl - so if the first bar or club you stop at is not to your liking, a new place is just meters away.The party in these clubs goes on well into the wee hours and you might happen upon some well-known djs in your bar hopping.

If you prefer something less lively to suit your mood, a more relaxed evening could include a dinner and dance show at Pyramid de Arona Auditorium or Exit Palace which features a lively variety show “Stars on Broadway” featuring songs/dancing from Cabaret, Chicago. Moulin Rouge, etc.

Your options for a room while you take in all that Tenerife has to offer include the traditional hotels and resorts that are perched just steps from the Atlantic to furnished 2 or more bedroom apartments or luxurious villas with meal plans and typical hotel amenities that can be rented by the week or month. The modern hotels that are located in Playa de las Americas & Adeje include much of what you might desire while on vacation: restaurants and bars, spa services, tennis & basketball courts, swimming pools, fitness centers, internet access (sometimes with a fee), children’s activities, and more.

Note: Many people come to Tenerife for the weather as their physicians feel the weather will ease their breathing or joint problems. Canary Island Ferries

If you will have some time, you may wish to consider a ferry ride from Tenerife to one of the smaller islands of the Canarian archipalego. Ferry trips can be arranged online via the Fred.Olsen Express, Naviera Armas, or Acciona Trasmediterranea web sites. Journeys to neighboring islands such as Fuerteventura, La Palma, Lanzarote or La Gomera would be a fine way to expand your exposure to other parts of the Canary Islands outside of Tenerife. A variety of seating/cabin options are available and priced accordingly. On board ship, you will find that many Canary Island ferries offer amenities such as air conditioning, restaurants, bars, swimming pools, and television to ensure that your voyage is pleasurable.

Tip: Check with the ferry operator as to boarding time cut-off. Many require you to be on board 30 minutes prior to departure if not traveling with a vehicle, and 1 hour ahead if you are bringing one on board.

Canary Island Diving

Your island vacation might include a day or two of diving in some of the clearest parts of the Atlantic Ocean. Canary Island divers will find unique sea life and abundant volcanic formations in the warm waters around the Islands’ coastlines. Everyone from novice to expert can experience swimming amongst schooling fish, stingrays, sharks, eels, and other sea life. Various dive levels are availabe and everything you need including wet suit, oxygen tank, etc. is provided by your dive operator.

Canary Island Cigars

The Canary Islands have a longstanding history dating back to the 1700’s of producing quality cigars. Each year, approximately 8 – 9 million cigars are produced on the Canary Islands. Cuban tobacco is often used for the hand-rolled cigars and are a wonderful find for those who enjoy a slow smoke, but not for Americans who wish to take some home with them. The cigars that they purchase to take home with them must be Cuban tobacco-free because of the ongoing US embargo against such Cuban things.

Tip: If you do buy some Canary Island cigars to take back with you, be mindful of the duty-free limits for your home country on such things.

Mt. Teide

While a visit to Tenerife’s Adeje area will provide you with numerous ways to have fun and relax, we would be remiss were we to neglect to mention one of the top attraction on all of Tenerife - Mount Teide. This mountain is actually a now dormant volcano which last erupted in 1909 and the highest point in Spain. You can take a cable car to within 200 meters of the summit. However, should you wish to hike to the top, a special permit is required and the number of hikers is limited each day. Contact the Mount Teide National Park office for further information on the permit and maps of the area.

If you would prefer, check into the availability of seeing Mt. Teide in the evening. Arrangements can be made with a Jeep operator called Tamaran to see the sunset from atop the volcano. You will be driven there in a Land Cruiser 4×4, a meal will be served and an astronomer will map out the night sky so that you can take in this uniquely romantic experience fully prepared under the stars.

Note: If you will be hiking to the crater’s edge and spy snow on the volcano, it might be wise to carry along a long-sleeved shirt or jacket so that your visit is not cut short secondary to your shivers.

Other Useful Information

Tenerife, being part of Spain is part of the European Union, so those laws also apply here. The official language is Spanish, however, you will find that English and German are widely understood in the tourist areas.
Because of the volcanic formation of the island, the tap water is drinkable, but slightly more salty than that which you might be accustomed. You may wish to pick up some bottled water at a local supermarket.
You may be approached by someone offering a free prize in exchange for your survey response. Be aware that everyone is a winner when they complete these surveys and that the friendly person is likely just a time vampire looking to sell you a timeshare.
Renting a car requires that you be 21 (or 23 with some rental companies) and have a valid driver’s license. Seat belts are required and you may be stopped and given an immediate fine should you drive without one, pass improperly, or not stop at stop signs. Driving is on the right-hand side and taxis and buses should be given the right of way.

Tenerife Weather

You can expect a tropical and sunny island vacation on Tenerife pretty much year-round. The Canary Islands have earned the nickname “Islands of Eternal Spring” because the temperatures don’t vary much throughout the year. Highs in the summer months average 25 C and 18C in the winter. Rain typically falls most in November and December. You will find that the northern side of Tenerife is wetter and 5-10 degrees cooler than the southern side, which enjoys a drier, warmer desert climate. The temps across the Island are moderated by the trade winds.

Tip: Because it is sunny and warm most days of the year on Tenerife, be sure that you wear sunscreen each day, especially if you are fair-skinned. Just a few hours enjoying the lovely beaches or just strolling around town unprotected could leave you with a painful sunburn.

Hong Kong is number one on my list for many reasons: Hong Kong has whopping 39 buildings over 200 meters tall. It also boasts four of the 15 tallest buildings in the world... that's all in one city! Hong Kong's skyline shows a large selection of distinct sky-reaching towers, with beautiful night lighting and reflection. This city exemplifies the post-modern skyscraper and skyline. Finally, the mountain backdrop makes this skyline (as you can clearly see) the greatest on the planet!

2. Chicago, USA
Chicago is the birthplace of the modern skyscraper. When Chicago built its first steel high-rise in 1885, it was not the tallest structure in the world but the first example of a new form of engineering that would change nearly every city on earth.

The buildings cannot be higher than 280 meters due to air traffic control restrictions, but that has added a tall (but not too tall) and consistent building height and space pattern that makes this skyline unique: Three buildings are exactly 280 meters tall and 5 others (8 total) stand at just over 200 metres.

The Route
Mount Everest, or the 'Mother of the Universe' (called by the Nepalese) is known as Sagarmatha in Nepal. Towering egoistically heavenwards, it is 8850 meters above the sea level. The route can be sensational only if you ward off all your fears and get ready to see the deepest ditches and touch the highest peaks. So come, let's feel the energy of the mountains and experience how it looks when the sky meets the earth.
Arrive in Kathmandu
The trip begins in the ancient and colourful city of Kathmandu. During day time, we can explore the 17th century splendours of the Monkey Temple, the Durbar Square and the old Kings' Palaces, as well as the ancient city of Patan.
Fly to Lukla
Early next morning we fly to Lukla at 2860 metres, where we meet the yak drivers, and porters. We can trek to Monjo (2652m) and spend the night there.
Explore Sherpa Villages
We will continue our trek up to Namche Bazaar (3446m), the capital of the Sherpa Kingdom. Here we rest for a day to acclimate and enjoy the hospitality of the fascinating people, then proceed up to Deboche (3757m) for a night, and finally to Lobuche (4930m), where we have another acclimatization day.
Reach the Base Camp
Finally, we make the last trek to basecamp at 5300 metres. After resting, organizing, and training in the basecamp for a day, we will begin our climb.
Hiking at the Khumbu Icefall
We start with a day hike through the awe inspiring Khumbu Icefall, followed by a trip to the plateau of the Western Cwm, for our first glimpse of Camp I, at 5800 metres.
Reach Western Cwm
From Camp I at 6000 metres, the route traverses the flattish bottom of the Western Cwm, to 6200 metres where Camp II is located. Camp III is on the head wall of the Lhotse face at about 7200 metres. Known as the 'Valley of Silence', the Western Cwm is a relatively flat gently rising valley, marked by huge lateral crevasses in the centre.
Ascend Lhotse Face
From Camp II, we will ascend the Lhotse face on fixed ropes up to a small edge 7,470 m (24,500 feet). Then we will climb another 500 meters to Camp III on the South Col at 7,920 m(26,000 feet). From camp III to Camp IV we will have to face two altitudinal challenges: the Geneva Spur and the Yellow Band.
The Geneva Spur is an anvil shaped, snow covered rib of a black rock named by a Swiss in 1952 Swiss expedition. The Yellow band is a section of sedimentary sandstone which requires 100 meters of rope for traversing it.
Reach the Death Zone
On South Col, we enter the death zone, where we will spend maximum 2 or 3 days before beginning our summit push. Within 10 to 12 hours, we'll reach 'The Balcony' at 8,400 m (927,700 feet). The Balcony provides spectacular views to the radiant peaks.
Follow Cornice Tracerse
At 8,750 m (28,700 feet), a small table-sized dome of is snow marks the South Summit. From South summit, we will follow the knife-edge southeast ridge along the 'Cornice Traverse' where snow clings to intermittent rock. This is the most exposed section of the climb as a misstep to the left would send one 2,400 m (8,000 ft) down the southwest face while to the immediate right is the 3,050 m (10,000 ft) Kangshung face. At the end of this traverse is an imposing 12 m (40 ft) rock wall called the 'Hillary Step' at 8,760 m (28,750 ft).
