This means our fruit, vegetables, herbs, grains and seeds. Pretty much anything that grows in the ground. I'll be breaking it down into simple but important points. Check it out:

Soil quality Most common fertilizers often only contain 3-4 of the basic minerals that used to be found in soil. Therefore right out of the bat, our produce is less nutritious than it used to be when our grandparents were young. Studies done by Globe & Mail and CTV news show that in some cases, the nutrient loss be anywhere from 50%-100% in some cases. -Source

Pesticides are another big one. I know a lot of them are said to be safe for human consumption but that isn't necessarily the case. Washing your produce can help but it's hard to say how much of those toxic ingredients actually leach into the food itself? A lot of these chemicals haven't even been tested for long-term human consumption so who knows what effects they're having on us long term.

Freshness When buying in supermarkets, you can almost be certain the produce you're buying isn't local (unless it says so right on the item or it's shelf). That means it's been shipped from who knows how far away. You probably don't even want to know how long before ago it was actually harvested... and then just sat on a shelf or in storage somewhere before making it to your grocery store. I mean, the stuff still looks fresh, but it really isn't. Often times the taste will give it away though - if it has any taste to it at all.

It's different for certified organic produce though because those items HAVE to have 3rd party certification that they are in fact 100% organic. 3rd party certification means that some outside party, not affiliated with the company in question has to come in and very every aspect of production, from seed to harvest to ensure all guidelines are followed. Certified organic produce has absolutely NO pesticides or GMOs so you can be sure they're the real deal.

* That isn't to say that all organic produce is created equal. There will always be people trying to get around the rules just to be able to charge that extra amount of money for something organic. That's why looking for ''3rd party certification'' is key. You want all the assurances possible that the product you're buying is as green as can be. That way you minimize toxic exposure while optimizing nutrient intake.*

Buying Local Since we brushed the subject there, let's keep going. Buying local is always a good option but again there's no guarantee that local means cleaner or pesticide-free. Making sure you're food is clean should be a priority so if local farmers aren't offering as close to organic as possible, it's your right to ask them to; or find someone else who will.

Reality The reality is I don't always eat organic myself. In the small community where I live, organic food is not always readily available. And when it is, it's sometimes overpriced, even for organic. In those cases when organic is not an option, there are always ways to work around it. Buying local at least, means your food will be relatively fresher than the produce aisle of your grocery store. Especially if you can actually harvest the fruits/veggies yourself. When produce isn't in season, just try to limit your consumption of the dirty dozen, wash your fruits and veggies thoroughly with natural fruit & veggie cleaner - or make your own, it's cheap & easy!

The Bottom Line is, eating fresh fruits & vegetables is always a healthier option than eating fast-food or overly processed snacks. Adding produce to your everyday routine is always a good idea, so try not to stress too much about it, do the best you can and never mind the rest :)

The important thing to remember here is that big corporations are making decisions about the food you eat. They're using pesticides that haven't always been properly tested for human consumption (and you will consume trace amounts or more no matter what they say) so my goal here was to bring awareness to that fact. If it bothers you, seek out organic produce. Talk to your local suppliers or governing bodies. Make yourself heard. WE CAN make a difference here and the best time to start is now.

Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-50594126188892357752014-06-23T19:03:00.001-03:002014-06-23T19:03:22.425-03:00Dealing with anxiety - a personal story

Mental Health Awareness Month is hosted by Uncorked Thoughts & Blog of Erised.

For more information plis visit this link

In keeping with our theme here for Mental Health Awareness Month, I thought it would be a perfect time to share my own personal experience dealing with mental health issues. I've shared a bit of my story with you all before, specifically how I got into living green, where I talked about suffering from anxiety and panic attacks (which you can read here) and how I got it under control with proper nutrition and cleaner living. For this post though, I'm focussing on the personal side of things. No how-tos or tips, I just wanted to share my experience on how I started dealing with all this and how things have evolved since then.

I've dealt with anxiety and panic attacks for over 10 years. As a child, I didn't think I was more anxious than average but looking back I was high-strung, hyper and very sensitive, so I guess there were signs early on that I'd been more anxious and prone to anxious flare-ups. I began noticing something was amiss when I was in Uni but by then it had been accumulating for some time so initially, I was misdiagnosed as suffering from depression. Many of you will know that often times anxiety and depression get misdiagnosed because suffering from depression for a long time can trigger anxiety and suffering from anxiety long enough will lead to feeling depressed. It can be a vicious cycle. So anyways, after a few unsuccessful depression medication treatments, we figured out the core issue was anxiety and I got started on a treatment plan to manage my symptoms.

After that for awhile things were better. I wasn't having as many flare-ups with my panic attacks as I had been and when I did I was able to keep them more or less under control with the prescription my doctor had given me but I never felt like I was home-free. I still had a hard time dealing with my anxiety and it still had an impact on my day to day life. It was like I was "ok" but looking back I wouldn't have called myself well.

After about 5 years, I started to realize that instead of just treating my symptoms, somewhere down the line my meds had led to me really feeling emotionally numb. I didn't get the normal highs and lows that regular people do when it came to my moods. Instead, I just felt desensitized to everything. It was at that point when I started researching getting off the anxiety meds I was on - only to find out that getting off them was more of an ordeal than anything. It had to be done gradually and the withdrawl effects from the drugs could last anywhere from 6 months to a year. At that point I had something of a mini-meltdown but thankfully, I'd also started working in natural health by that time and was able to ease my withdrawls with specific natural supplements. I'm not going to lie to you - I did feel those withdrawl effects for close to a year after getting off my prescription. It was a major challenge, I'm not going to lie and some days I felt just like I'd done at my lowest point all those years back, but I knew I was finally getting on the right track for me.

Going the natural route really turned things around for me. After that initial rough patch I got a whole new outlook on life. With the help of a trusted naturopath & therapist, I was able to virtually eliminate my panic attacks - honestly I can't remember the last time I've had one; it's been years! My anxiety is totally manageable now and situations that used to trigger flare-ups have gotten infinitely easier. It just goes to show how far a good support system tailored to YOUR needs can take.

All of that being said, I'm not here to tell any of you that my way is the way for everyone. We all have our paths to take and our choices to make. For me, going natural worked but I had many mentors & trusted professionals helping me along the way. My best advice: do your own research. Look into all the different options for dealing with anxiety or depression or panic attacks or whatever. Read up online, visit the library, talk with your doctor. If you don't like what he or she has to tell you, get a second opinion. Talk with a therapist or other people going through the same thing. Collect all the facts you can and then make an informed decision as to how you want to handle your mental health. The most important thing to remember is that there is hope for anyone and everyone, no matter how far gone. You can get through the rough patches and come out a better & stronger person!

And that's my story! Please feel free to share your story or your thoughts in the comments below :)
Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-4728618606052311502014-06-12T11:36:00.000-03:002014-06-12T11:36:10.666-03:00Top 10 Tips for Dealing with Anxiety

**This post was originally featured on Uncorked Thoughts as part of Mental Health Awareness Month. To view the original post, please click here

Hi all! In the spirit of Mental Health Awareness Month, one of our hosts Leah over at Uncorked Thoughts suggested I whip up a Top 10 post on the best ways of dealing with anxiety/stress. Of course, considering my background in natural health, these will have natural health leanings but I've also mixed in generalized tips and advice as well! While this post first went up on Uncorked Thoughts, I still wanted to post it on the blog here so my readers wouldn't miss it! So here are my top 10 tips:

1. Breathing. Breathing is important - it sounds like common sense or too simple to actually have an effect but time and time again studies have shown that taking a moment to stop and focus on breathing in and out slowly has positive results in calming down nerves, anxiety or panic attacks. I shared a fun little 60 second video previously that addresses proper breathing techniques, to view it click here.

2. Nutrition. Think of your body like your car. Food is the fuel that keeps your car running smoothly. If you're prone to anxiety or panic attacks you should be aware of how caffeine, sugar, artificial ingredients (food colouring, preservatives, aspartame etc) can negatively impact your nervous system and overall mental health. Speaking from experience when I started eliminating coffee and processed foods from my diet, I noticed a HUGE difference in my anxiety levels. That doesn't mean I don't have caffeine or sweet deserts in my life but instead of visiting a local coffee chain, I drink homemade tea and instead of processed store-bought cheese cake, I make my own so I can decide what goes in it.

3. Exercise. Similarly exercise has been proven to help with a variety of mental health issues like depression, anxiety, panic attacks. And I'm not specifically referring to lifting weights at the gym - although if that is your thing that's cool too! But the reality is anything you can do to get your blood pumping works just as well. You can have a nice walk in the park, do yoga , or even dance up a storm in your living room! Whatever way you chose to stay active, so long as it gets you moving and works up a sweat ;)

4. Using food as medicine - this differs from my point in #2 where I talked about certain foods aggravating mental health issues. In this case, we're talking about adding certain foods to your diet which have been shown to alleviate symptoms of stress and depression. Foods like avocados, chia seeds, hemp seeds, almonds, berries, salmon and dark leafy greens (spinach, broccoli, asparagus, brussel sprouts...), because of their nutritional content have been known to lessen symptoms of anxiety, stress and mood disorders.

5. Adding certain natural supplements to you diet. Again I won't go into specifics because I'm a strong believer that a personalized approach to nutrition is best but for the most part, people with mental health issues can benefit from a good quality B-complex vitamin, omega-3 oils (like from salmon, chia seeds, hemp seeds, nuts, avocados or olive oil) and minerals such a magnesium are very helpful with stress, anxiety and depression. Be sure you purchase these at a health food store or in the natural section of your supermarket. Shopping big box stores will offer better discounts but be mindful of any added preservatives they could sneak in there. *Note that this is generalized information that doesn't take into account personal allergies, or medication interactions. Consult your health care practitioner before making any drastic changes to your health routine.

6. Pets and plants. Study after study has proven that caring for a pet helps people lessen symptoms of anxiety, depression, stress...etc. Animals have healing powers for people because they offer no-strings-attached companionship and loyalty. And if you live somewhere where pets aren't allowed, don't let that discourage you. There's always the option of getting fishes for a fish tank or even hamsters, ferrets, birds, lizards...Similarly plant life has been know to be beneficial for mental health. Having greenery in the home is a wonderful way to take care of something living without tying yourself down with a dog or cat. And of course there's always the option of helping out at your local animal shelter.

7. Journaling This is another time-tested technique that has shown useful in dealing with all kinds of mental health issues. Sometimes the trouble is just being overwhelmed by stressful or sad feelings and writing these things down is a good way to release them - journaling helps get all that negativity out of your system and also sort through your feelings. You'll find that they become much less overwhelming when you can make sense of them a bit. It may sound too simple to work but many people swear by this practice.

8. Living well A general sort of point here that may sound like a no-brainer to some but it bears repeating: If you live a healthy life, you'll have better mental health. That means that excessive use of alcohol, caffeine, sugar, fast-food.. etc will have a negative impact on your overall health, including mental health. The same is true for smoking, use of recreational drugs or abuse of prescription drugs. Living well is an inside job that requires some work but the results are well worth it.

9. A good support system - this includes family, friends, loved-ones, online network, support groups, therapy...what have you. The important thing is that you surround yourself with people who are willing to support you when the chips are down and you're at your worst. It's crucial to realise that we're not alone in dealing with mental health issues. Often times just talking with other people who are going through the same thing or who understand where you're coming from and know how to help can make a world of difference!

10. Bottom line: do whatever works for YOU. If working out helps you deal with stress, then go run around a few times a week and burn off those nerves. If you start looking at nutrition and notice a change, you owe it to yourself to establish some rules for trying to avoid what doesn't agree with your body. Whether it's meditation, music, or journaling your feelings - find a regime that fits and stick to it! With a little work, you can get on track to a better quality of life :)

I hope you enjoyed my top 10 tips.

If you have any other tricks that work for you, share them in the comments below.

Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-39091139836531943312014-05-09T13:00:00.000-03:002014-05-09T13:00:19.011-03:00Mental Health Awareness Month

I have something a little bit different than the norm for you all today. Many of you probably know that I also run a book review blog. Well two of my favorite bookish bloggers: Leah @ Uncorked Thoughts & Ula @ Blog of Erised have gotten together to host Mental Health Awareness Month for the month of June. Even though Mental Health Awareness month was held in May around these parts, in the U.K., they actually have it in June. When I was asked to participate, I couldn't refuse because raising awareness for mental health issues is something I strongly believe in. For their part, this will mostly involve reading books that deal with mental health issues in any and all it's forms. I will be reading and reviewing a few books relating to MH on the book blog but I also wanted to participate through Holistic Chick as well.

Things will be a bit different over here though, less focus on the bookish aspect naturally ;-) I'm thinking of having one or a few discussion posts and possibly a few tricks of the trade on dealing with various mental health issues - from a natural standpoint of course :) Keep an eye out for these come June!

Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-32610526305223837862014-04-28T13:49:00.003-03:002014-05-02T15:20:11.735-03:00Tricks of the Trade - Baking Soda

Tricks of the trade is a regular feature here at Holistic Chick where I showcase a simple, natural item that can commonly be found in the home and how it can be used to make your life more simple...and more green. It spotlights helpful tips involving cleaning, beauty & body care.

Today we're talking about Baking Soda, which has SO many different uses it almost sounds too good to be true. Seriously, when I started researching this post I was already using baking soda for cleaning, personal care, as an odor remover and for getting rid of stubborn stains but I was surprised how many new uses I found for this simple, affordable, everyday item.

Deodorizing - Baking Soda is brilliant at absorbing odors. You've heard of people putting a box of baking soda in their fridge? That same idea can be used for anything from removing smells from footwear, the car, clothes (in the washer) cat litter-boxes...even as a natural under-arm deodorant - just rub a bit of it on under-arm area after the shower! It works wonders sprinkled in trash cans, stinky drains, lunch boxes...pet bedding - you name it! If there's a smell, baking soda can get rid of it safely.

Stain Removal- Baking Soda is GREAT for removing stains from clothing but it also works wonders for clearing up things like rust stains in your sink and appliances. I've shared a post awhile back regarding the many uses for Vinegar including a bit on how White Vinegar is great for removing stains (read the full post here) and whenever baking soda or vinegar alone don't cut it, combining both usually does the trick. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten a tough stain out of a white top with a combination of vinegar, baking soda & a little elbow grease. NO harsh chemicals AND it gets the job done. Gotta love that!

For Body Care - Baking Soda has been used as a teeth whitener for centuries but did you know you can also use it as a natural body scrub and even for hair care - i.e. making a natural shampoo, mouth freshener and like I mentioned about underarm deodorant. Because baking soda not only cleanses but also deodorizes, it's the perfect ingredient for a lot of different body care routines.

As you can see, the possibilities are virtually endless. If you need something cleaned, whitened or deodorized, you can likely use Baking Soda to get it done. It can be abrasive though so mix it with water before using it on surfaces that could get scratched and test on a small inconspicuous area before going nuts with it. I'd had ginger juice in the first health food store I'd worked in but it was pulpy and too strong for me to truly enjoy. Then, as I was reading once again about all of it's amazing benefits (which I'll be sharing below), I happened upon a basket full of actual ginger root at my local corner store and figured I would try brewing tea from it...and since that day, I've been having 1-2 cups of fresh ginger tea each and every day!

Ginger is an herb closely related to Tumeric and indeed it does have many similar properties: both anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiseptic and antibacterial. Ginger specifically is better know for treating digestion issues, nausea, morning sickness, headaches/migraines, arthritis and joint pain.

Ginger is also know for improving circulation, increasing blood flow, alleviating coughs and colds...in fact, the basic nutrients found in Ginger have shown to help support lung function. Ginger has also proven to be liver tonic because of it's ability to regenerate, protect and cleanse the liver. Similarly, Ginger has the ability to support and cleanse the kidneys. Finally ginger is also an adaptogenic herb which means it helps the body adapt to stress by supporting your adrenal glands.

So- for someone with digestive/liver issues, migraines, inflammation and
adrenal fatigue, you can probably see why I'm excited about ginger ;-)

**To brew a tea from ginger root: slice 4-6 thin slices of ginger root and add to boiling water. I hope the holidays were as wonderful for you all as they were for me ♥ And I hope you'll forgive my holiday-hiatus but I'm back in full-swing and ready for part three of our discussion feature! For this installment, I wanted to share some very basic and general nutritional information that can benefit pretty much anyone - assuming of course, that there are no pre-existing health issues or concerns that require a special diet or supplement protocol. Some of these tips might be no-brainers for a lot of you, but I think they bear repeating. Others still might go against things we have been lead to believe for years by the general health population. If my years of working in the natural health industry have thought me anything, it's that a little change...can do you good ;-)

Alright so - here we go:

Water. Water is likely THE most important and overlooked healthy habit to get into. I won't get into all the benefits of water (again) since I've posted more than once about it here and here...and I don't want to nag y'all but for ANYONE even remotely invested in their health or well-being; start by drinking more water. It is the easiest way to detox, energize and help your body do all the things it needs to!

Protein Fat & Carbs - know as macro-nutrients, these are the three basic groups everything we eat fall under. Here's the most vital piece of information I can give you about them: EVERYONE needs to eat protein AND fats AND carbs. Period. Cutting out all fat is BAD for you. It's a simple as that. You need GOOD fats to help your body get rid of bad fats. It may sound wrong, but it is a fact. People trying to lose with by cutting out all the fats in their diet will likely not be able to meet their weight loss goals. Why? Because starving your body of the fat it needs makes it hold on to whatever calories it can...making it very hard to shed those pounds.

The typical ratios to guide yourself by here - considering you have no pre-existing dietary requirements is as follows: Daily and for EVERY single meal: proteins should make up about 40% of your caloric intake. Carbs should take up about 30-40% but these should be complex carbs - none of that refined pasta and bread guys! The final 10-20%...leaning more towards 20% should be healthy fats which include but are not limited to: olive oils, nuts, seeds, butter, avocados, coconut (meat/oil/milk) and the fat from meats and cheeses if you eat them.

I mentioned weight loss briefly there, so here's another simple tip: skipping meals will not help lose weight. Your body needs fuel and if you restrict it too much, it will go into starvation mode and STORE MORE CALORIES. And that's pretty much going against your weight-loss goals.

GMO's are bad. They are worse than bad. When we ingest them, are bodies can't even recognize them as food. It's as if we were ingesting plastic Their nutrient value is significantly less than regular foods AND they cause more harm than good in the long run. Keep in mind that genetic modification is a very new process that hasn't been tested for long term human consumption. A good rule of thumb with food is: if it didn't exist 100 years ago, you probably should avoid it.

Rest - this might sound like a no-brainer, but take it from a former night-owl: sleep is good. When someone becomes sleep-deprived, they tend to have worse metabolism, anxiety, mood-issues...not to mention low energy and brain fog. If you have trouble getting or staying asleep, I recommend consulting with a natural health practitioner. Supplementing with Melatonin, herbs like Chamomile and Catnip - even drinking a small glass of pure Black Cherry Juice before bed can do wonders! Personally speaking when I began taking a quality protein powder before bed, my sleeping habits & quality improved immensely.

Exercise -is another kind of obvious one, but it's also habit that's easy to let fall by the wayside. Yet study after study has shown that having an active lifestyle does wonders for your health and well-being. No matter how slow you go, getting off of that couch will surely improve your quality of life! Whatever the weather, if you dress accordingly, you should be able to enjoy yourself and improve your well-being!

Breathing - duh right? But I'm talking about deep, relaxing breathing here. Either through yoga or simply by taking time every day to take deep cleansing breaths, you can calm your nerves, get more energy and think more clearly. Do it with me now: inhale, hold it for a few seconds than sloooowly exhale. Repeat this process for one whole minute and you'll notice the difference.

Supplements - should only be taken as needed for a pronounced lack in nutrients -OR- to correct and/or regulate an existing condition. Supplements can't and shouldn't replace a proper balanced diet and just because someone you know had impressive results adding a certain mineral or herb supplement to their regime does not mean you will get the same results. I recommend consulting with a nutritionist of naturopath that does nutritional testing like hair analysis or blood analysis to find out what supplements you ought to be taking.

I hope these simple reminders helped put some things in perspective for you!

Anything to make getting healthy easier for us all - right in time for the new year...

Here's wishing all of you a healthy 2014 :)
Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-43708742966020794392013-11-26T15:27:00.003-04:002013-11-26T15:28:13.805-04:00Random Inspiration: Grain Variety
Random Inspirations is a regular feature here on Holistic Chick where I post random inspirations either on green living, natural eating, relaxation, positive thinking & living, inspirational thoughts or stories - anything that could inspire, to encourage positive change and to be random...which is something I do quite well :) If you have any random inspirations you'd like to share or get me to feature on here, I'd love to hear them!

**Today, I'd like to inspire you to add 'grain variety' into your diet**

Even if you yourself aren't personally dealing with living a gluten-free or wheat-free lifestyle, it's impossible not to notice the growing number of people out there that are in fact, gluten-intolerant or wheat-intolerant. More commonly known as Celiac's disease, it is characterized as a complete inability to properly digest gluten or wheat. For today's Random Inspiration, I'd like to encourage every single one of you to eat a wider variety of grains. I'm talking breads, pasta noodles and baking especially since I think most of us tend to have weaknesses for those foods *cough* like me *cough*

Different available grains

Now, to those who don't deal with food or environmental sensitivities, this might not sound like such a big deal. BUT, if you've ever bothered to really check the ingredients in the foods you buy and eat, you will have noticed that either gluten -OR- wheat show up in a startlingly large amount of every day items. Some are not surprising, like breads, pastries, pasta noodles & baked goods but others are downright odd, like ketchup, tomato soup, pickles, bouillon cubes, hot chocolate, soy-sauce, hot dogs, medications and/or supplements.

Wheat/gluten can cause severe discomfort

You might be wondering- what's the deal with this increase in people who simply can't stomach wheat or gluten? Well, the verdict is still out on that one. Some people believe that the wheat we have around nowadays has been tampered with too much (genetic-modifications and such) that 'real' wheat as our ancestors knew it does not exist anymore...which would explain why the sudden upsurge of people being unable to process it. Still others believe that wheat is simply overused in this day and age. As we saw above, this stuff is in everything!

So what does this all mean? Well personally, I believe we could all benefit from eating a variety of grains. Even if wheat & gluten aren't a problem for you, there are many benefits to adding different grains to your diet. Here's the lowdown on a few alternatives to wheat:

Grains like spelt, kamut & rye tend to offer the most options. You can get spelt, kamut and rye bread from most grocery and health food stores. And that goes for spelt, kamut & rye pasta noodles as well. These grains do contain some gluten in them though so they're only suitable as wheat alternatives to those who can still stomach gluten and/or wheat. Taste wise, they all compare more or less to whole wheat or whole grain breads or pastas. My personal favorite is kamut since I find it less gritty than regular whole-wheat pasta and it has a mild flavour.

Grains like quinoa, amaranth, buckwheat and rice are some of the best gluten-free options out there. All are commonly available in both flour & pasta noodle form. I've personally made the switch to brown rice pasta noodles. The flavor and texture most closely resembles traditional white noodles but rice is much more gentle on the stomach and digestive system than wheat!

Other gluten-free options include corn flour & noodles or even potato flour or noodles, but these are less nutritious - especially if they're not organic.

I strongly believe we are not meant to eat only on type of grain - in fact, I'd say it's a sure fire way to end up developing intolerances and/or allergies. Variety is the key here; every different type of grain offers different nutrients so make the most of it. Experiment! You're likely to discover something tasty ;)

Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-31245804347499385132013-10-20T10:37:00.006-03:002013-10-27T11:59:39.847-03:00Part 2 Discussion : How Holistic Chick was born

I've decided to launch a 10-part discussion feature on Nutrition...specifically the state of nutrition nowadays. Part 2 of my discussion series focuses on just that:

I grew up in a small town in Eastern Canada and as a child, I was a ridiculously fussy eater. My mom worked full-time, so this lead to my developing a bad diet pretty much as soon as I was able to cook for myself. Canned foods, mac and cheese and minute noodles became a specialty of mine. This pattern only worsened as I moved on to University with an abundance of take-out delivery options in the big(-er) city. Me and the roomies were ordering fast food a couple times a week at least, whenever we didn't feel like cooking our minute-foods >.<

Truth be told, my health problems had begun to surface when I was in my teens - in a way that even a teenaged me could notice, but in retrospect there were earlier signs. I had some food intolerances and at around 16, I developed debilitating migraines. Which in turn led to an increased 'need' for over-the-counter headache medication. By the time I was in University, I had prescription strength migraine meds and was suffering from a 2-3 day migraine every week. For anyone who's experienced even one single real migraine in there lives, I don't have to tell you that my quality of life was greatly affected by it all. My attention in classes would be affected and same goes for when I was working. Sometimes I would have to miss classes or shifts altogether...

I don't believe that my diet was the only reason for the anxiety I was also dealing with at the time; but I am sure it wasn't making it any better either o_O

Anyways, it was only at the end of my studies in Psyc, when I assisted a chance seminar on psycho-analysis, that a speaker drew the link between healing your psyche and healing your body that everything began to change.

By then I was already starting to realize that my health was really poor - especially at the age I was! Not to mention the weight I'd gained from a combination of poor diet + prescription meds which was now well over 40 lbs. I knew some things needed to be changed but man... changing the way you've been living for years and years is hard. It seemed impossible, really it did.

And then I started working at a local health food store. They were willing to train and educate us on natural nutrition & holistic healing. We were encouraged to look things up extensively for our clients. And by helping others get healthy, I was able to start learning how to make myself healthy. At first I found ways to manage my migraines and my anxiety. Then I worked on my food and environmental sensitivities and I tell you, within the course of one year, my quality of life was transformed.

I became so passionate about the healing power of eating right and using natural supplements and herbs to take care of myself, that I was made responsible for sharing knowledge with out clients through social media: newsletters, blog posts, informational write-ups and whatnot.

Then I moved on to training with a life-long mentor and Naturotherapist, where I was able to get to the root of my health issues and that's where the real changes began happening. My health completely turned around. I was no longer managing my symptoms, I was eliminating them! The change in my quality of life and well-being is as clear as the eye can see! Within a year, I'd received my own ''n.d.'' certification for Naturopathic Consultations and from that point on, I went off on my own little mission to get everyone healthy!

As for how I got into blogging green? Well once I was no longer doing the social media thing for my employers, I found that I missed it. I still had that need to share health tips with others by writing about what I've learned and passing it on. And since I was already launching a book review blog, I decided to launch my own health one too...and BAM! Holistic Chick was born.

Today, I can proudly say that I did a complete 180° from where I was in my early 20's. My health has improved exponentially, my stress levels are way down and I've lost all the weight I'd put on! I consider myself living proof that ''the food you eat can be either the safest and most powerful form of medicine or the slowest form of poison.''

**Stay tuned for part 3 in this series, where I'll be discussing what health basics EVERYONE should know.**
Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-39260214346607575732013-09-26T17:08:00.002-03:002013-09-26T17:08:51.562-03:00Healing with Herbs - Red Raspberry Leaf

This week, we'll be chatting about the long list of benefits of Red Raspberry Leaf Tea. Red Raspberry Leaf is exactly what the name implies. Harvesting the leaves of Raspberry bushes and steeping them into a tea has been done for centuries. Raspberries have incredible nutrient content and health benefits and their leaves are no exception. Packed with vitamins, minerals and nutrients, Red Raspberry Leaf tea has some pretty amazing benefits for the whole family, but they are extra useful for women. Read on...

I first discovered Red Raspberry Leaf Tea early on during my very first job in natural health. My first months working at a local health food store, I soon realized that we were selling quite a bit of boxes of pure Red Raspberry Leaf Tea. Clients would rave about how helpful it was during PMS, for cramps. Others would say the tea greatly reduced their menopausal symptoms, specifically hot flashes. Pregnant women would tell us how it got their morning sickness under control. It wasn't long before most of the staff had tried it out for ourselves and we all agreed: this stuff is amazing!

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea has been shown to:

relax uterine muscles and strengthen overall uterine health.

It alleviates menstrual cramps, hot flashes and morning sickness!

It's nutrient-dense brew promotes healthier hair, nails, bones, skin and teeth.

It's also shown useful at healing canker sores and for relieving diarrhea.

Red Raspeberry Leaf Tea contains high levels of beta-carotene, lutein, tannins, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sulfur, zinc & Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, C and E!

Other than fresh picked Red Raspberry Leaves, this brand is my favorite;

Traditional Medicinals Organic Red Raspberry Leaf
Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-55681236671969504552013-08-29T13:06:00.000-03:002013-08-29T13:26:26.785-03:0010-part discussion feature launch! Introduction

Hey guys! Hope you're all doing well :) So I have some exciting news for you all - or at least, I think it's exciting hehe >.< Anyways, I've decided to launch a 10-part discussion feature on Nutrition...specifically the state of nutrition nowadays. I hope that sharing the very basis of what I've learned from years working in the field might make it easier for some of you to start taking the right steps towards getting healthy!

When I started Holistic Chick, it was just on the heels of launching my book blog so they each kind of ended up influencing one another in different ways. And since two blogs involve quite a bit of writing - especially a book review one - my intention to whip up holistic-type discussions fell by the wayside...BUT...I have been working on this segment for quite some time! A lot of planning and organization was required and by nature, I tend to have sort of a scatter-brained approach to writing and, life in general so: *pats self on back*

So yeah, back to the topic at hand: I never really told the story of how I became a more conscious and health oriented weirdo that I am here on the blog. Sure I shared my story as testimonials to my own clients, friends and family but not since I've launched Holistic Chick... and that got me thinking about how HUGE taking on something like this can seem, when you're just starting. When you begin to open your eyes and see how unhealthy a lot of people are (maybe including yourself!) and you know you want to start making changes...but where do you start?! How do you know what advice to take and what might not work for you?

I personally started taking my health into my own hands when I was 28 and had just started working in the holistic field. I'll save the details for the next part of this discussion segment but let's just say I was a mess : migraines, anxiety, weight gain, food allergies and environmental sensitivities to boot. I was lucky enough to find myself exactly where I needed to be to learn to take care of myself in a way that worked for me. Getting healthy took care of most of those issues within the first year or two. Now that's all well and good for me because I was learning about myself while I was training in the field. Obviously, not everyone has that opportunity...

I know a lot of people are curious about living healthy lives but it can seem overwhelming to get into from the outside looking in. There's a lot of confusing information out there - and just because it works for one person doesn't mean it's the best advice for everyone! I thought that by sharing the very basics truths of what I've learned meshed into a sort of history of how Holistic Chick came to be might help simplify some things for my readers.

This week will just be a sort of introduction post, I've explained a little of what I want to discuss but here's my upcoming post topics:

Week 1 - Introduction (In progress. Check. ✓)

Week 2 - How Holistic Chick came to be

Week 3 - Nutrition: the basics EVERYONE should know

Week 4 - The state of Produce today - fruits, veggies, herbs

Week 5 - To meat or not to meat...the 411 on regular meat, free range & organic

Week 6 - Vegetarianism, Veganism and concerns (e.g. nutritional deficiencies)

Week 7 - Vitamin Supplements

Week 8 - Healing with Herbs

Week 9 - Protein Powder Power

Week 10 - Conclusion/Wrap-Up
There are this many parts because I want to try and keep my posts short and we all know I can ramble on...especially when it comes to health stuff >.< Soooo yeah, I hope you'll all participate by asking questions, sharing your experiences with getting healthy and your thoughts on nutrition the way I live it...because I can only share my own experience with y'all in the hopes that it can help some of you. Like I mentioned above, I'm still learning about my own health and body day by day and I'm willing to learn from other people's experiences as well :)

**This post was featured on Simple Lives Thursday, Thank Your Body**

Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-46384028797046380932013-08-12T18:06:00.001-03:002013-08-14T11:27:18.201-03:00Deliciously Natural Recipes - Pizza Dip (V,GF,R)

This time for Deliciously Natural Recipes, I wanted to share something fun! A yummy treat for a nice week-end in watching movies snuggled up on the couch...or since Summer should still be hanging around for a bit (right??) a nice treat for a family BBQ or even a bonfire! It's my recipe for Pizza Dip which is best served with corn chips or nachos but works great with regular potato chips too!

This recipe is raw, gluten-free & vegetarian and can easily be made vegan by substituting the cheese for a vegan option (Daiya Vegan Cheese being by far the closest to regular cheese in taste and consistency - trust me on this!!) -or- by opting out on cheese entirely, it's tasty either way!

What you'll need:

1 large can of crushed tomatoes (28 oz)

1-2 fresh tomatoes

fresh basil (dried works too)

fresh oregano (or dried)

ground turmeric

yellow, orange or red bell pepper

olive oil

apple cider vinegar

salt & pepper

shredded cheese or vegan alternative (like Daiya)

*optional* - 1 small container of cream cheese -&- 1 small sour cream container

Pre-preparation:

mince or shred basil and oregano - if using fresh! (about 1 tablespoon worth but you can put more or less, for dried herbs just skip to the next step)

dice tomatoes & bell pepper

How to put it all together:

pour crushed tomatoes into large mixing bowl

add diced tomatoes & bell pepper

mix in minced basil & oregano

Add in 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Add in 1 tablespoon of apple-cider vinegar

Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric (or more if you like the stuff as much as I do)

Add 1 teaspoon of paprika

Salt & pepper to taste

Mix thoroughly

Pour the mixture onto a pizza pan or even a cookie sheet

Add shredded cheese on top - like you would do with a pizza!

Serve with tortilla or corn chips. My favorite all the Que Pasa Tortilla Chips. Regular potato chips also do nicely;)

ENJOY!

Non-Raw and Non-Vegan Option

**A friend of mine used to whip up a recipe something like this, but she'd line the pizza pan or cookie sheet with a a mixture of cream cheese & sour cream~! One (1) small container of cream-cheese and about half a cup of sour cream mixed well together until the mixture becomes whipped and spreadable. You can add more sour cream if needed for increased spread-ability. Spread mixture on the bottom of your pizza pan and then add your layer of tomato/bell pepper/herb. Top it off with cheese - or not! It gives the mixture a nice tang and thicker constancy...it also makes for a truly decadent treat. I tend to save this richer take on the recipe for a special occasion but feel free to give both versions a go and decide for yourself :)

Your finished product should look something like this!

I hope you'll all try this simple & delicious recipe for pizza dip. It spotlights helpful tips involving cleaning, beauty & body care.

I started researching using various teas for beauty for my post on Dying your Hair Naturally with Tea because I'd already been using tea for various health & beauty tricks. Even I was surprised though, ad the different ways tea could be used for body care, beauty & health! I'd already planned on sharing my recipe for a natural self-tanner made only with black tea - but I decided to expand this second post to include more of my favorite uses for tea....other that enjoying a nice steaming cuppa ;)

Various Teas

So, now that we've got our hair under control (thanks to Tea) we can move on to other things. Though I still may have a few hair+tea tricks left over to share! Read on:

**Black tea can be made into a natural self-tanner too (reason # 32587 why I love black tea!) - all you need is 3-4 bags of black tea and a plain plastic spray bottle. Brew 3-4 tea bags in no more than a cup of water - you want this to be dark & strong for best results! Boil water (teabags included) for about 5 minutes. Then, you can remove and discard the used teabags and let the mixture cool. Once cooled, pour mixture into your empty spray bottle. Be sure to set your spray nozzle to a fine mist beforehand - believe me, a jet stream of tea in your eye is something you don't want! >.< If you're looking for a whole body tan kind of deal, it's easier to apply by standing in the bathtub. If you want to apply after a shower or bath though, be sure to dry off completely before spraying for best results. If you're only looking to add colour to your face, be sure to cover up any clothing before spraying or to wear black. Here is a step-by-step how to that really helped me to get to recipe down so I could modify and personalize to my needs: http://beauty101.livejournal.com/10078370.html

Black Tea

**Chamomile tea can be used as a compress/eye wash to treat pink-eye! Brew it exactly the same way you would do for drinking (follow the box or package instructions) and then soak a compress or washcloth in the mixture & apply to affect eye(s). Ideally done while tea is still warm because the bacteria that causes conjunctivitis or pink eye can't stand the heat! Works quickly & effectively on moderate to severe pink-eye. This little gem has always worked quicker for me than anything else I'd tried in the past, natural or otherwise.

Camomile Tea Cup & Herb

Chamomile tea can also work as a mouthwash for minor mouth or gum infections. Again brew as you would for drinking and just gaggle for 1-2 minutes 3-4 times a day!

**Green tea makes an excellent facial & hair rinse - it's great for promoting skin elasticity and giving it a nice anti-oxidant boost, plus it reduces puffiness. Used on hair it really makes it shiny, glossy & strong! Brew it a bit stronger than you would do to drink it - half the water or double the tea bags and then let it cool. If you're using it on your skin you can pour it in a spray bottle and spritz when needed (store the remaining brew in the fridge). It's a fun way to discover new foods and new flavors!. This week I'll be featuring: Olive Oil!

Olive Oil is a fat that you get from olives but it is considered to be a healthy fat! I can't stress this next statement enough: everyone needs to consume healthy fats and around 20% of our daily intake of calories should come from healthy fats! I never even bother to check calories on stuff like this - it's the good kind of fat. We all eat the bad kinds often enough and consuming good fats helps your body get rid of the bad ones. It may sound odd but it's true!

Olive Oil w. Today, I'd like to inspire you to make the switch from regular table Salt to Sea Salt.

Sounds simple enough right? That's cause it is! In the old days, salt didn't need to be refined and bleached & stripped of all the other nutrients it contains naturally besides sodium.

Natural Sea Salt

Traditional 'table salt' removes all other nutrients leaving you with just sodium. If that's not enough, it can contain bleaching agents, additives, preservatives, even SUGAR - Say what?!? It's true! Plus the companies tend to add anti-caking agents to reduce moisture...which are not natural by any means and can be quite harmful to your health. A much safer, healthier AND more natural alternative is to use natural sea salt.

Sea salt can now be found in most grocery stores and is definitely on the shelf of your favorite natural health food store. Sea salt has balance of minerals, not just sodium, so it doesn't offset your natural mineral ratios by spiking up your sodium and nothing else. In fact, sea-salt has less sodium than regular salt! Natural Sea Salt contains other trace minerals and nutrients -like magnesium, potassium and calcium, so you're getting added benefits along with your salty flavor! Potassium especially has a significant relationship with sodium, and too much sodium can cause a deficiency in potassium. Since sea-salt has

Sea salt also happens to tastes better that traditional table salt. And take it from someone who loves salt as much as I do, once you switch you'll start finding regular salt kind of gross, not to mention way too intense compared to sea salt. Sea salt is usually not pure white in colour. In fact, the best kinds are not white at all but pink! Even gray! As a rule, white foods contain little nutritive value,so with sea salt, you don't need it to be white at all!

Pink Himalayan Sea Salt & Gray Sea Salt are your best choices

Some studies suggest that diets heavy in traditional table salt could be partially responsible for the thyroid dysfunction epidemic seen in modern times. Firstly because your thyroid gland needs potassium and well, as we discussed, regular table salt has no trace-minerals. Sea-salt on the other hand, has potassium and sodium together for more balance! Additionally, sea salt contains naturally occurring iodine, a nutrient your thyroid gland needs in order to keep functioning properly. Because of extensive processing and refining, table salt loses any traces of naturally-occurring iodine and manufacturers substitute by adding potassium iodine (a synthetic compound). My thoughts are better stick to sea-salt which is balanced exactly how nature intended: naturally.

Thoughts? Do you use Sea Salt?
Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-16070747969998603272013-04-22T13:11:00.002-03:002013-04-22T13:11:50.628-03:00Happy Earth Day!!

Celebrating Earth Day All Around the World ♥

While I strongly believe that we should live our lives as if EVERY single day was Earth Day, sadly this isn't the case. So today try and be mindful of what little changes you might be able to take on - not just today, but every day. Any small changes can lead to a BIG difference! You can start by buying locally grown produce, supporting small farmers, boycotting the big businesses that mass-produce fast food & 'imitation-foods' and the like...You can set out to make your household as green as possible by using natural, eco-friendly cleaning & household products. You can also make yourself aware of any careless habits, like being wasteful with water, electricity and other resources. It's also good to be mindful of the amount of plastic you discard, like lunch bags, plastic-wrap and grocery bags.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Beyond that though, you probably are already doing your part, even if you don't realize it yet! Take a moment to congratulate yourself on the little things you already do every day to give back to the Earth: Do you recycle? Always remember to bring reusable bags when you shop? Do you use public transportation? Do you compost? Plant your own fruits, veggies & herbs?

All these things might seem small, but they are necessary steps to keep the Earth healthy & happy because without her we'd have no home and no life. Think of the generations to come that will inherit our planet and help do your part to keep it safe for them...for Earth Day, and always.

Caring for the Earth so she can continue to give back

Share with us - what do YOU do to care for the Earth?

Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-24567427723936723562013-04-16T10:41:00.002-03:002013-04-24T15:51:16.176-03:00Healing with Herbs *5* - Catnip

Healing with Herbs is a regular feature here on Holistic Chick where we spotlight a different herb and it's healing properties. You can start by trying to be mindful about what you buy at the grocery story AND what you eat at home. Diet has a HUGE effect, not just on our health, but our mood, our looks & our energy levels. Eating lots of processed or fast-foods can wreck havoc on our overall well-being, and the worst thing about those foods isn't the fat content like you would think... read on.

One of my mentors, Naturopath Cheryl Marr always tells her clients: ''We should try to go back to eating like our ancestors used to eat - If it didn't exist a hundred years ago, we shouldn't be eating it!'' This means reducing or avoiding processed foods and favoring home-made, natural alternatives.

Healthy Food

Processed foods are anything that comes ready-made, ready-to-eat and are almost always packed with 'food-like' substances like harmful preservatives, artificial favors, colours and even artificial sweeteners. Our bodies are not designed to ingest 'artificial' ingredients and once ingested they often become toxic to our overall health & well-being.

Processed Foods

When your body has toxins to get rid of, it needs to work extra hard in order to get rid of them. The more artificial ingredients you consume, the harder your body must work to clean up your system. That means that instead of focusing solely on your energy levels, metabolism and well-being, your body is over-working itself further trying to stay on top of everything AND clean up any toxins!!

Food-like products have scary effects on our health!

Like a lot of other people out there, my own diet used to be heavy on processed and fast foods. I am here to tell you that changing your diet & lifestyle is possible! Once you begin to educate yourself, improving your choices becomes a lot easier.

Start by incorporating small changes in your routine, such as:

Always read the ingredients of anything you buy. If it has 25+ ingredients or you can't pronounce half of what's listed you can't pronounce - leave it on the shelf!

Try you luck at preparing a favorite treat yourself, from scratch! When you chose what ingredients go into your food, you can enjoy your treats guilt-free! Plus usually home-made tastes MUCH better than store-bought.

Beware of food labels that say things like 'fat-free', 'sugar-free','diet' or 'light' - that means they've taken out any healthy, natural fats/sugars and replaced them with artificial imitations.

Understand that everyone needs a healthy balance of protein, fats & carbs - your salad with low-fat salad dressing may be doing you more harm than good. Balance is key.

Food colouring, artificial sweeteners (aspartame: Splenda, Equal, Twin..etc), preservatives, sulfites, high-fructose corn-syrup, saturated fats & MSG are bad for anyone & everyone. Period. So try avoid those whenever possible.

And finally, don't be afraid to do your own research! Look up ingredients you aren't familiar with and their possible side-effects. If you're baking a cake that calls for white sugar, look up substituting it for honey, brown sugar. If it calls for Crisco or margarine? Use real butter instead! Taking a hands-on approach to your health is the first step.

By simply being mindful of what you chose to put into your body and your family's plates, you can get on track and start feeling better! Allowing for small baby steps here and there often gives us the courage to really whip ourselves into shape. It's never to late to feel your best!

What small changes have you taken up on the road to being healthy?

If you're just starting on the path, what changes do you want to take up?

Thoughts? I strive to use a wide variety of all-natural ingredients because of my food-intolerances & allergies. The idea is to make the switch back to traditional, home-made foods that are simple to prepare AND healthy.

Since I started working in the Natural Health Industry over 5 years ago, I think the question I get asked most by friends & clients alike is: What do you put in a green smoothie?! Sometimes people ask because they want to start making their own but they are not sure where to start. Other times, they ask me because they are already making smoothies but either they don't like the taste, texture or they just aren't satisfied long enough to help them till their next meal.

Green Smoothies are a balanced & nutrient-dense way to start your day. They are a perfect way to kick off a workout by ensuring a energy boost & the right kind of fuel to support your body through any kind of physical activity. Anyone and everyone can benefit from incorporating green smoothies into their daily routine!

Now I'll be honest, I used to be one of those people who would look a green smoothies & think: gross! Thick green drinks usually don't bring the word tasty to mind. Imagine my surprised when I first tried a drink & my first thought was - Mmmm! How can something SO green, taste SO yummy?! The thing is, when you use the right mix of greens & other tastier things, once they're all blended together, you can't taste the Spinach or Carrots or whatever!

Here is Holistic-Chick's own version for a yummy, filling & healthy Green Smoothie:

- 1-2 cups of spinach or kale (dark leafy greens are best!)
- 1 banana
- 1/2 of an avocado
- 1-2 tbsp of coconut oil or coconut meal
- 1 cup of liquid - either milk, juice or water - I prefer using pure apple juice or even milk (regular or almond/rice varieties). If you're using real milk,go for the full fat (3.25%)
- 1 scoop protein powder - either Vegan or Whey depending on your diet. Whey is a good choice for people just getting started with smoothies because of its smoother texture & palatability but there are some quite yummy vegan protein powders out there - Genuine Health Chocolate Vegan Protein is quite decadent!
*If you don't have Protein Powder - you can use Hemp Seeds or Nut Butter (almond, tahini, sunflower, cashew...) but you need a good source of protein in there!
*optional* you can add a tbsp or 2 of chia seeds (or hemp seeds) in there for a super-food boost.

- you can add whatever other fruit or veggie you like: pineapple, carrots, mixed berries...-

Mix the ingredients together & blend thoroughly! This smoothie has an ideal balance of greens (carbs), healthy fats and protein. You should always be sure your smoothie has not only fruits & veggies but protein & fats to give you extra energy, to keep you full AND to help lose weight - especially for those who work out, proper balance gives better results!

Delicious, Nutritious, Balanced & Satisfying

BENEFITS of JUICING or GREEN SMOOTHIES

Detox your body naturally

Energizes & revitalizes

Healthier skin, hair & nails

Improved metabolism

Aids in proper digestion

Reduced cravings

And so much more! After the announcement that Google Reader is disappearing July 1st (after I almost just got in the habit to using it & subscribing to blogs!) *sigh* Anyways, I've decided to join Bloglovin'. I was debating between Feedly & Bloglovin so I compromised & went Feedly for my mobile reader cause I prefer how that one is set up. To replace Google reader on the laptop I picked Bloglovin'. I'm really a big fan how Bloglovin' looks & handles on my computer ...and since a lot of my favorite bloggers made the switch to Bloglovin' as well, I went ahead and followed suit!

I hope my Google Reader RSS readers will continue to follow :)

Click THIS button to follow Holistic Chick via Bloglovin'

Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-87164918725527315152013-03-17T12:54:00.002-03:002013-03-17T12:54:34.478-03:00Weekly Inspiration

This edition of Weekly Inspiration is all about motivation. Whether your goal is to lose weight, drink more water, exercise more or cutting out negative thoughts...the key is the same: motivation.

The thing about motivation though is that it doesn't last. You can be motivated as hell one morning:

Today is the day I'm going to start working out! I am going to be awesome, I can do it!

...and wake up the next morning wanting to give up. It happens to everyone. When it happens to me, I like to remind myself of this simple quote:

Every day is a new day and every new day presents a new choice. You can choose to give up OR, you can give yourself another dose of encouragement & go for it! Unlearning certain bad habits & replacing them with positive changes isn't something you can accomplish in a day. It can take awhile to adjust to a new way of doing things, don't give up. Whatever you use to get you motivated is fine, just remember to 're-apply' daily ;)Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-34193123751627505632013-03-04T17:14:00.001-04:002013-07-16T18:34:08.155-03:00Tricks of the Trade (3) - Using Tea as a Natural Hair Dye!

Tricks of the Trade is a regular feature here at Holistic Chick where I showcase a simple, natural item that can commonly be found in the home and how it can be used to make your life more simple...and more green. It spotlights helpful tips involving cleaning, beauty & body care.

This week I'm featuring a natural alternative to dying your hair, without the use of harsh chemicals & odors using: tea! Yes, you can dye your hair using tea! There is a perfect tea for your hair colour too regardless of if you're blonde, red-headed OR brunette! Not only is dying your hair with tea a natural alternative to chemical dyes, but this actually makes your hair look & feel better. If you're like me and deal with chemical sensitivities, allergies, migraines...or you just want to use more natural products well listen up cause this post is for you.

I'll get into the specifics for each hair color in a second but first some general guidelines:

Various Teas

Usually the amount of tea you need is between 3-5 teabags or roughly the equivalent in loose leaf tea.

You will be brewing the tea much stronger than you would for drinking. You may end up with about a cup's worth of liquid but it will be concentrated. Tea has natural staining properties and it's richly colored anti-oxidants are perfect for adding some colour & shine to your hair!

You won't be able to turn your dark hair blonde or make your blonde locks brunette - tea works with your natural colouring.

Grey coverage tip -equal parts of tea AND fresh -OR- dried sage brewed together will help cover any grey hair because sage helps to open up the hair follicles and allows for better colour retention.

ALLOW MIXTURE TO COOL before pouring it on your head guys. Just sayin' >.<

A good tip is to use a new hair-dye applicator handy or a clean empty plastic squeeze bottle for application, though in a pinch you can pour it liberally while standing in the shower or with your head tipped over the sink.

The longer you can leave the 'dye' on your hair the better. So plan at least an hour but for really resistant grey, you may have to leave it on longer. Since tea is natural, some people leave it on the head to dry (even overnight) and rinse out later in the day or the next morning. Everyone is different so if after trying the mixture for one hour, the tone is too subtle - or you still see some greys poking out, try leaving the mixture on longer next time!

Rinse with cool water and style as usual.

So, here are the specific tea-flavor you need for your specific colouring:

Black tea is ideal for brunettes (black hair is in this category too) and being a brunette this is the one I've tried. It's easy & effective. All you need is about 3 tea bags or the equivalent in loose leaf tea. You'll need about 2 cups of water and bring the whole mixture to a boil. Allow to boil for 3-5 minutes then let it cool. I use only 100% natural ingredients - NO additives, nothing artificial. The idea is to share simple, homemade recipes to help people make the switch and avoid ready-made alternatives that can be full of additives, harmful preservatives and artificial flavors, colours or sweeteners.

Today's drool-worthy recipe is Ice-Cream made with Coconut Milk! It's easy, YUMMY & much healthier than most store-bought ice-cream! That's due in large part to the the numerous health benefits of Coconut. Coconut is filled to the brim with beneficial nutrients, GOOD fats (which are NEEDED to help your body get rid of BAD fats), and is heart & cholesterol healthy. It helps your body resist viruses & bacteria - it has also been shown to positively affect blood-sugar levels & thyroid function! Coconut is especially great for giving your metabolism a boost as well as helping your body absorb other nutrients better, therefore increasing your energy & well-being.

Alright, on to the fun stuff: you can made ''ice-cream'' with pure coconut milk, and trust me: this doesn't taste like a lesser substitute for actual ice-cream. One bite of Coconut Milk Ice Cream will leave you drooling for more! Preparation time is minimal and 1 hour in the freezer is all the time you'll have to wait to try it for yourself!! Here's what you need:

3-4 cans of full-fat coconut milk

honey or another natural sweetener like cane sugar, stevia or agave (regular brown or white sugar works too!)

a whole vanilla bean or pure-natural vanilla extract

2 cups of raspberries -fresh or frozen (or strawberries, cherries, peaches...)

1 lemon or lime (a small wedge at least)

~*How to put it all together*~

In a large mixing bowl, pour in contents of cans of coconut milk (room temperature)

add sweetener of choice (about 3 tbsp of honey or 3 tbsp sugar or 1/4 tbsp stevia)

cut your lemon or lime in quarters and squeeze the juice out of 1/4 and add to the mix.
*hint - both lime & lemon are yummy but I prefer the taste of Lime combined with Raspberries and Lemon with Strawberries*

mix well!

add raspberries (or other fruit of choice) whole, diced or pureed- depending on preference. I usually crush them because while I enjoy pieces of fruit, I'm not a fan of big chunks!

If you're using an actual Vanilla Bean , you'll need to grind it or grate it or even throw it in the food processor...anything you can do to crush it up as fine as you can ( and if you've never tried this: you must, the flavor is a-mazing!)

If you're using Pure Vanilla Extract - all you need to do is pour in about 1/2 a teaspoon!

mix well!

Pour entire mix into a large Ziploc bag & put bag in freezer.

You will need to take out the mixture every 15 minutes (so 3x during the hour) to knead the bag - otherwise it will freeze in one large clump.

After 1-hour - remove contents from bag & enjoy!!

As you probably could tell, there are tons of ways to personalize this recipe & make it your own. You could make it a single serving-sized portion by only using 1-cup of coconut milk...you can sweeten it with any type of sweetener you prefer...AND you could always skip the fruit & add cocoa powder & maybe even some chocolate chips - for an especially decadent treat :)

And if you prefer just throwing it in the freezer and forgetting about it, you can always freeze the content in a Popsicle tray and make Creamsicles *drool*.

Ideal for health conscious ice-cream lovers & lactose-intolerant individuals ~

Even people who aren't usually partial to coconut-flavor LOVE this, Coconut Milk is surprisingly mild & creamy & once you add the fruit or cocoa you have a perfect 'ice-cream' dessert.

Let me know if you're a new follower in the comments below so I can hop back & return the favor. ♥

This post is featured on Real Food Wednesday via Kelly the Kitchen Cop - Allergy-Free Wednesdays via Gluten-Free Pantry - Whole Food Wednesdays - Tuesday Greens via Crafty Garden Mama - Thank Your Body Thursdays

Micheline Dhttps://plus.google.com/102650027957251886637noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3456465667718811122.post-22164998398171406992013-01-25T15:28:00.002-04:002013-01-25T15:28:18.287-04:00Weekly Inspiration - Staying Active in the Winter

It's time for another edition of Weekly Inspiration - and this one is about staying active during the colder Winter months. Coincidentally, this week around here (eastern Canada) we've been in an intense deep freeze with temperatures staying around -35 to -40 with the windchill! Brrrrrr!!!

Bone-chilling weather aside, staying active in the Winter months can be a challenge for some people. I know, I used to be one of them Nowadays though, I find that I am more active during the colder months than at any other time. If you make sure to dress accordingly to the weather there is no reason not to stay active! Plus there are SO many FUN ways to make the most out of the snow!
