I have been pivoting.

I recently had one of those “ohhh… that’s how it really works” moments with SEO.

I finally fully understood and implemented website siloing – building optimized content around one main page and strategically interlinking related pages and posts back to it. I wish I had learned this sooner.

Website siloing is the practice of creating a clear content structure on your site. You start with a strong main page (for example, a core service or specialty), then build supporting pages, blog posts, and content that all relate to that topic. Everything links together intentionally, sending strong signals to search engines about what your site is actually about.

Why does this matter?
Because search engines don’t just look at individual pages anymore – they look at context, relevance, and authority. When your pages are connected in a meaningful way, it helps search engines understand your expertise and pushes your main page higher in search results.

I’ve been implementing this strategy on my own website and have just started doing it for two client sites as well. The results are already promising. The only reason I didn’t do this sooner? I was focused on other parts of running a business – design, client work, content creation.  I wish I did it sooner though.

Using SEO Audits to Find Hidden Opportunities

Alongside siloing, I’ve been leaning heavily into SEO audits using Keysearch – not just to fix issues, but to uncover opportunities most business owners don’t even realize they have.

One of my favorite things about doing audits is discovering services you already offer, but aren’t clearly marketing or optimizing for.

A couple of months ago, while doing on-page SEO for a brand-new website build, I uncovered a very specific service opportunity for a print shop. It was something they already did – but very few competitors were optimizing for it. That meant:

• Clear search demand

• A chance to stand out immediately

So we created a dedicated service page, optimized it for that specific keyphrase, and tied it into the rest of the website structure. Instead of burying that service in a paragraph somewhere, it became its own authority page.

Minor refresh: every 12–18 months
Strategic redesign: every 3–5 years

How do I feel about it?  I think if you are happy with the design, you should keep it beyond the suggested 3-5 years.  But if you need to upgrade the software or your content is invisible to the search engines, it would be a good idea to revamp things. If any of these are true, it’s redesign time – regardless of age:

• You hesitate to share your website
