You guys. Has it seriously been a full YEAR since I've typed up a blog post on here? That is both depressing and encouraging. Depressing--because I feel like I have forgotten about my first "child" my Holly in Heels blog. Encouraging--because it means that I have been suuuper busy with other fun and creative projects, like my continued PR and media copywriting, contributions to Coyote + Oak magazine out of San Luis Obispo, as well as Locale Magazine's newest San Francisco addition.

I have to admit that while these other (paying) jobs keep me busy and on my toes, I do stop and think about my former life as a fashion and lifestyle blogger, and how I miss the creative outlet. To be able to write about whatever topic I choose is certainly a gift.

Writing is also therapeutic for me--this blog is like a friend. Like the kind you can call up anytime, talk about the deep stuff and then mention this new conditioner you tried...and then switch back to the meaning of life. Well, not that I ever blog about the meaning of life here, but you know what I mean. The serious with the superficial. That is the money spot.

What has truly been keeping me from blogging more regularly, I have uncovered, is finding my identity (here comes the serious, watch out). In my former life before having children, I wore high heels to work every darn day. I had a creative job in marketing, and a shoe closet dedicated to my colorful high heel collection. Once I had Hazel, my freelance writing career kicked into gear, and I traded in my heels for hi-tops.

No joke, it was sort of ridiculous for me to have a collection of heels when all I wanted to be was comfy!

Don't get me wrong--I still love heels. Always will. But I have actually evolved to the 30-something who has a closet chock full o' suede slingbacks, stylish sandals, pointed-toe flats, a wide collection of Vans old skools, and half a dozen pairs of Birkenstocks in all shades of primary colors and metallics. I have my go-to heels for date night and particular meetings when I play dress up (or so it feels), but my every day has changed quite a bit since I started Holly in Heels.

And it leaves me to wonder--has this happened to you? Have you evolved in your style or your interests after a big change in your family or life has occurred?

So where is this all going for moi? The answer: I'm not quite sure--but several people in my inner circle have been encouraging me to start up my blog again, and find my new voice. I'm excited about the challenge and hope you will follow along with me.

My latest project + passion

Hey guys! It's been a while. While the world has been spinning madly on, I've been taking a little time off from blogging to work on my freelance writing career. It has been a blast. Sure, the shoe shopping has continued--but so have a few wonderful new projects and ventures.

One of my latest projects has been particularly inspiring, and I wanted to make sure all of my faithful, fashionable and wonderful readers knew about it. Because it's pretty much the bomb. The project is Dinner with Friends magazine. Dinner with Friends is all about featuring local people and places. It is a design-focused, online lifestyle magazine celebrating California's Central Valley (also my native land), one dinner party at a time. The work featured in this super special online mag will come from local writers, photographers, stylists, artists, graphic designers, and more. This month, I was proud to have written the feature piece about the magazine's first official dinner party. 'Dreamers who dine' was the theme of the eve, and in covering the dinner party I was able to meet an outstanding group of entrepreneurs, photographers, bloggers, and other "dreamers" who turned their dreams into careers. It was inspiring.

I have to say, through my latest cool projects and other writing adventures, this blog has stayed in the back of my mind the entire time. This blog is like my first friend, where I flexed my writing muscles and learned the basics of what people like to read.

So this month, as holiday fashion picks up and I feel particularly inspired to get in touch with my "first love" again, I am happy to report that you'll be hearing/reading more of miss Holly in Heels on the blogosphere. I can't wait to pick up where we left off and talk shoes, fashion, and everyday style antics.

A Strappy Dilemma.

You guys. There are so many cuuuuuute shoes out this spring. This is kinda the time of year where I start to get excited about shoe shopping again. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a universal, year round sorta hobby...but when I can paint my toes pretty colors and pop on a dress or a cool pair of skinnies - my feet get excited that they're not longer crammed into boot weather!

This season, lace-up sandals and flats, cage sandals, gladiators, and wedges are all the rage. I can get on board with the wedges, but now that I'm in mom-mode for most of my everydays, I shy away from cage and lace-up styles. Puh-leeease. It takes me too dang long to lace up a sandal when my toddler is running out the door, and when I can easily slip into a chic slide sandal just the same.

Well, THANK YOU JESUS, I found work-around! I am love love loving these Sam Edelman 'Ginette' Sandals that criss cross, but ZIP up the back. Holluh! I thought twice about the price, but I think in the neutral color, I'll be living in these all spring and summer long.

The 'Soho Gal' espadrille wedge from Stuart Weitzman is also a winner. Super cute, simple buckle, with a leather upper suede finish.

And while we're on the topic of wedges, I am thoroughly obsessed with these 'Aimee' Wooden Platform Wedge Sandals by Hinge. The black/white leather with dots is THEE only way to go, and they get STUNNING reviews by buyers online. Dooo iiiiiit.

Stopping to celebrate LOVE.

Valentine's Day. It's a super special day to me. Yes, like many women in American, I'm a total sucker for red roses, a good box of candy, and a dinner date on the town. Now don't get me wrong, I feel totally and utterly loved by my main man 365 days out of the year - but there's something about St. Valentine and all that his day means, that makes me so grateful we stop to celebrate love.

This year, my guy earned some BONUS POINTS due to a surprise flower delivery to me from Farmgirl Flowers - heard of them? Farmgirl Flowers first caught my eye on a show we domesticated couples like to watch, called "The Profit." Sorta akin to "Shark Tank," "The Profit" centers around small business and entrepreneurs, and helping them improve upon their existing businesses. The founder of Farmgirl Flowers caught my fashionista eye, and my husband paid attention.

5 Creative Ways to Store and Display your Fabulous Shoes.

Before we begin...I need to ask for your forgiveness. I haven't blogged since May. Ahhhh! Shame on me, I know. But before you grab your voodoo doll and punish me for the lack of shoe inspiration I've been sending your way, please be proud of my for massively growing my freelance writing business, tackling some public relations work, and stepping up my Instagram pop-up shop. It's been fun, but the blog has been lacking.

Luckily, I got guest blogger, Kelsey, to help me out this week with a fun story about how to creatively store and display your shoes (and keep you looking stylish, too!). Read on.

Shoes can pose a serious storage problem, even in spacious closets. The average American owns 19 pairs of shoes, while most shoe lovers are guilty of hoarding many more than that. This can too easily cause clutter and set us back 5 or 10 minutes during our morning routines. If you need shoe organization ideas to get a wrangle on your repertoire, Modernize has several helpful suggestions for organizing your shoes and keeping things looking polished.

If you have plenty of shoes and some space to boot, don’t be ashamed to display your entire collection. Shelving your shoes helps keep even your most-worn pairs in good shape. Shoes are one of the hardest accessories to store efficiently. Their unique shapes make them hard to stack and store without a box, but the boxes hide them from view, making a selection difficult. Vacation’s All I Ever Wanted.

As a busy mama and freelance writer and fashion blogger, there is so much on my plate! I mean, if I’m not cutting up strawberries into tiny pieces or picking up Cheerios off of the ground, then I’m burning the midnight (naptime) oil blogging away, working on my latest writing project, or reading up on the latest fashion trends and shoe styles to keep my busy mind well inspired! It’s a good job, and I’m glad I get to do it.

But I’ll also admit, sometimes I just need a little vacay. You know, just a few days to get out of my routine and feel the ocean breeze, eat at some new joints, and get my tan on!

This month, my little fam is going to an island getaway, and since I know you all may have some vacation time in your future, I thought I’d show you my getaway shoe picks from the one and only surf apparel favorite, Reef.

Let’s start with the ladies, shall we? I am mad crushing on these Reef ‘SHADED PALMS’ sandals. Their good, natural color goes with everything from cutoffs to white skinny denim, and the weave detail on these leather lovelies is a real eye-catcher. The 4 Laws of Summer Sandals.

I love to look at things according to trend. Every season, I think it’s one of my most favorite things, to check out the top fashion magazines, the top fashion blogs, and peruse street wear, to see what types of items will be next on my wish list. This is one of my favorite things about shoes, too. There are endless amounts of styles, possibilities, flairs – from buckles to studs, kitten heels to spikes, pointed toe to round – the trends come and go, just like the seasons do.

This season, you can count on a few eye-catching trends to hit your shoe must-haves list. I know we all have our flip-flops, combat boots, and our cute flats from every single season past, and those have their place. But if you’re like me, you want to freshen up your shoe closet now that the summer sun, short shorts and party dresses are almost here. So I give you: 4 laws of summer sandals.

First up: Floral Sandals. You’re likely seeing it everywhere, but floral patterns are a MUST this spring and summer. From small print to oversized, roses to tulips, let the cool botanicals adorn your feet.

Law #2: Fun flips are the way to go. Toss aside the cheap, rubber ones that resemble post-pedi spa sandals, and get your toes into some cute leather or rope flip-flops, like these nautical flip-flops from rue21.com…

Next up, always keep in mind that a little sparkle can go a loooong way. I’ve even thought of doing a little DIY on some plain sandals, to make them look like this (at the risk of losing a finger to the glue gun). The fourth, and final, law of the summer sandal this season is to go boho! Yes, embrace that Birkenstocks-wearing hippie chic girl inside of you. It’s in there! And if you can’t afford the $100 price tag on the Birks, maybe snag some of these cross strap sandals (in every color)!

So before the summer sun gets beating down and you have no shoes to wear to that BBQ, remember this list of summer sandal shopping. It’s law.

Art & Sole...and a little bit of coffee.

You guys. I'm currently doing something I have not done in a loooong, long time. I'm blogging at a coffee shop - sans kiddo! Now, don't get my wrong, I love love love time with my little - she's not only adorable and sweet as can be, but she also loves to try on clothes, put on play makeup, and try on mama's shoes. How perf is that?! But when munchkin is at grandma's house, you better believe I'm bloggin'!

Today I've decided to pull out a book that's been on my work desk for quite some time now. When I am in need of fashion inspiration, a dose of creativity and art and style all at once, I flip through the gorgeous, lush pages of this sweet little coffee table book by Jane Gershon Weitzman. LOVE.

You may recognize Miss Jane's last name because you're a shoe fanatic like I am, and your ears perk up when you hear Stuart Weitzman. This book, called Art & Sole, is a spectacular selection of more than 150 dreamed-up art shoes from the Stuart Weitzman Collection. From heels, to...

A lot of you follow yours truly on not only this fine and dandy blog, but also my Instagram and Facebook fanpage. And if you do, you know that my style has changed a little bit over the last few months.

Yes, it is true, since keeping busy with my freelance writing work, as well as my brand spakin' new Instagram Pop-Up Shop, I have found myself sporting the finest in flats, boots and booties. At first it was hard to let go of my heels - sifting through my heel closet was one of my favorite parts of my morning routine. But now, I must say that I am absolutely obsessed with the expansion of my shoe-loving mind. What was once a "heels only" girl is now a full-fledged boot obsessed fashionista. I can wear my boots and booties all day long, dash to coffee to do some writing, and not feel overdressed...but still have that style.

Winter style in sunny California.

Ok ok ok, I will be the FIRST to admit what a wimp I am when it comes to winter. My fuzzy wool fedora seriously goes off to the people who live in the Midwest or the East Coast where freezing temperatures are well below what we experience here in sunny California!

So when the 40's and 50's roll around in the forecast, I sadly push my tees and tanks to the back of the wardrobe until May, and start to stock up on cozy pullovers and wool scarves. It's kinda fun for a change, really!

The key to mastering winter style in California is to keep it fresh. It's super easy to get stuck in a rut of solids and stripes - but if you keep your winter style new and fresh, it's bound to perk you up like a good latte in January. Geometric patterns are a strong accent to any top, polka dots keep style spunky and young, and mixing colors and stripes is key to keeping it interesting. And don't you forget the power of a colorful, patterned scarf!

A little dream, a new beginning!

Good morning, shoppers! I hope you all have had a fabu Thanksgiving, and a little time away with family and friends. I don't know about y'all, but I've taken FULL advantage of some excellent Black Friday deals (mostly from the comfort of my cushy couch, hot cocoa in-hand), and even Small Biz Saturday! It's been fun to check some things off of the Christmas list, and see what's out there, too!

Well, lemme get to the good stuff here...as some of you know, for a long time now I've had this blog, gushed about shoes, wailed over shoe sales, found you all bargains and on-trend beauty finds, and even had a man's perspective on women's shoes (one of my faves!). Well folks, I've done it. As of last week my family of 3 and I picked up and moved to a whole new city, a whole new part of California. Aside from going from apartment to apartment, post-college, I haven't really done a big move. See, the house we said goodbye to was the home of A LOT of things: where my husband proposed to me, where we came home as Mr. & Mrs., where we had endless parties and family dinners (including an epic 30th birthday, where the living room was cleared out to make room for a live band!), and where we brought our newborn babe home. Not to mention, it was also the home of my shoe closet! Sigh! It's a big change, and today has honestly got me feeling a bit homesick, so I decided to think about that AMAZING things that my new city has to offer...

One of those things is boot weather! For the first time in a long time, I'll be able to dwell in my yummy leather boots for longer than a week! Hoooooray! This fall, there are so many adorable short boots and riding boots out there - I'm trying to contain myself from shopping overload!

Nordies, of course, is well-stocked with a few favorite women's boot trends: including moto boots, over-the-knee boots, and short stacked heel boots. OMG, adorbs.

First off, can we just talk about how adorably daring the moto boot + skirt combo is?! I am in love. Tossed on with some ultra-sheer black tights...I am soooo ready for the fall!

Confession: usually I don't go for black boots. I dunno, I feel like I'm always bordering on trashy or harsh when I end up with a black boot, but this season, I'm throwing caution to the wind (I mean I'm in a new city for crying out loud, who cares?!). With the right style, and a few more pennies, black leather boots are work-work-workin' it this fall and winter season.

My favorite: Michael Kors studded moto boot - so NYC, so in my closet!

Trend alert! Silver boots for fall.

One of my favorite memories I have with my man is the time we went country line dancing. Now now, I know I may seem more like a city gal to you, but deep down underneath this mall-strollin', money-spendin' machine is a simple girl. I remember we grabbed a few cold ones, did some two-steppin' amidst the crowded dance floor on the Central Coast of California, and got our boots a little dusty. It was quite magical!

Well, in this season where leaves are changing and new chapters are beginning, I've decided that I need to drag that man o' mine back out on the dance floor and do some country line dancing once again (plus, a cold beer sounds pretty delish!). I, of course, cannot even think about doing this without getting some brand new boots - and the trend alert for this season is silver boots!

Silver cowboy boots are taking a front seat right now - they're gorgeously metallic, and perfectly paired with dark denim or even skinny black jeans (also on-trend this fall!).

Just think: a little fitted boyfriend plaid shirt, some favorite black skinnies and these gorgeous silver boots - ahhhh! Love. I am all set to take the dance floor (or the stage!) for a little night out of good, ol' fashioned fun.

So, ladies, get your hands and your feet into this silver boots trend this fall - and I'll see you two-steppin' on that dance floor!

Labor Day weekend has passed us right up, the "back to school" commercials are circling the airwaves, and the sun is going to bed a little earlier every night - so you know that means summer is drawing to a close.

Transitioning from summer to fall can be an uncomfortable time. One minute it's cool and breezy, then suddenly scorching hot! Layering with lightweight clothing is an easy fix.

I personally love wearing a jacket with some shorts or a skirt.

This is the time of year when you can be really creative with your wardrobe and mix and match your summer and winter clothing together for fun and eclectic looks.

Ok sweet blogosphere friends--welcome to the final few days of summer. I simply cannot believe it. As much as I'm an "autumn" spirit at heart, I have loved this last June, July, and August which have been filled with so many memorable adventures, highs, lows, loves, heartbreaks, and of course...lots and lots of summer shoes!

As you'll be able to tell from the amount of blogging I have not done, it's been a very good summer! I'd say one of the BIGGEST highlights of the hot, hot, heat this summertime was my adventure to Las Vegas! Exactly 1 week before my little baby Hazel's 1st birthday, I hopped a plane and met my beloved cousin in Sin City. Not only was it one of the most relaxing vacations I've had, but it was the most money I've ever spent in one weekend - ha! I'm still mayyy-jorly loving my husband for not disowning me after he saw the receipts (more on that story later!).

During my fab Vegas adventure, I had a few go-to shoes that I lived in, that I thought you may heart too:

1) Ivanka Trump 'Delfino' Sandal from Nordstrom paired here with one of my fave pieces, my TOPSHOP Tailored Strapless Jumpsuit (selfie on our way out for the night!)...

2) The Bounce Wedge Sandal by BC was another great staple for the weekend AND for every summer wedding so far! In this selfie #2, I paired the nude metallic wedges with the Nordstrom Wayf Crepe Shift Dress, in light coral...

Summer style and the 3 S's.

I have to admit that I am an autumn girl at heart.

I love traipsing around in leather boots, scarves, a colorful knit beanie, sipping on hot cocoa and curling up in a coffee shop. Now, don't get my wrong, I love the summer too - mostly warm summer nights that allow me to keep my shorts and tank on at 9pm, and feel the warm summer breeze on my sun-kissed, sunblocked skin! But to be honest, I'm always stuck on what to wear in the summer. In beautiful SoCal, we get this phenom called "June gloom" and it is enough to drive a fashionista bonkers. It's cardigan weather up until the clouds burn off, around 11am or 12pm, and I'm left needing an entire outfit change! So basically, layers are my BFF.

This summer, you can find me in 3 key things:
1) stripes
2) short shorts
3) flat sandals

I majorly love these summertime outfit ideas from Piperlime - fun combos of stripes + lace, nude strappy heels and flat leather sandals, too.

The Steve Madden 'Stecy' sandals are a MUST this summer--paired with short shorts or a breezy skirt, these will be a staple!

And single-strap sandals with a touch of metallic - I'm crushing on these by Vince, on sale price to boot!

Gap also has so fabulous and easy breezy summer apparel. I recently got my hands on their burnout step-hem tanks and tropical floral shorts, and they're my absolute favorite in my sea of clothes! Check out the full outfit, here.

As I enter my mid-thirties, the summers of wedding after wedding seem to be simmering down. It's really a darned shame too - not only do I LOVE weddings...the decor, dresses, cocktails and dancing 'til my feet hurt...but I love to go SHOPPING for a solid wedding guest dress. With a few weddings on the calendar this summer (YOW!), it's high time I break out my shopping shoes, and find a good guest dress.

#1 on my list? This Long Sleeve Crepe Shift Dress by Wayf. With an entire collection of perfectly patterned and cut dresses at Nordstrom (also my go-to for wedding wear, please note!), this classic floral pattern tops the list.

I'm also adoring this great polka dot pick by Wayf - great shape and style, and perfect with a bright heel or sandal.

And option number 3, is this perfectly pink little number, also from Wayf. At $59, this beauty can easily be dressed up with a chunky statement necklace, and a killer pair of black leather pumps. I'll take them ALL!

Bottom line: I want this dress. And now, so do you :)

Helloooo, shoe gals (and guys!)!

I want to start out by saying...PHEW! This spring has really taken off for me, in the best way possible! Not only is my baby girl grow-grow-growing out of her newborn shoes fast (see her via Instagram) but my writing has taken a MAY-JOR upswing, and I'm loving it. My most recent dream come true has come in the form of being one of the new contributing writers to The Orange County Register! Check out my first published article here - and you'll see me in many more print papers that come dashing to your Orange County, CA doorstep. Yipee!! Locale Magazine LA has also dropped this month, featuring my writing and modeling (haha, still funny to me, but true!). The digital issue of this new, cool mag is all over the City of Angels as well as online (my spread page 96!).

So that's been my life these past few months, and why blog posts have been scarce. All #GOODSTUFF! So, to catch you up on a few of my shoe + style thoughts so far this season, thought I'd sprinkle in a little Q&A today. Here goes:

How would you describe your style this summer?
Easy. I think this is the summer of simplicity - loose fitting white graphic tees, tattered denim shorts, nude leather sandals, a solid pair of designer shades, hats when necessary.
What's the inspiration behind your summer closet?
California! Palm trees, cool breeze, throw on and go! I love the effortlessness of California style - how things don't need to be perfect or match much - sorta the way life is sometimes.

Favorite shoe of the season:
The gladiator is baaaack! Rawr! Ok, that's not really what a gladiator sounds like, but that's sorta how I feel when a see a good shoe - like this one from Sam Edelman, found at Nordies. With a pair of shorts or a simple dress, this one fits the bill.
Why heels?
Why not? Ok, really, heels are my fave because they're versatile, aaaaand they make anyone's legs look 100% better! Promise!
Ice cream sandwiches or popsicles:
BOTH! Yum.

Shopping local: a new neighborhood spot!

As much as I scour the web for great deals and trends at major department stores like Nordstrom, Gap, Target, Forever 21, I really do also love to shop small. Supporting local business is such a great thing to do - to step into a boutique filled with hand-picked items, and usually the shop owner at the front counter - there's really nothing like it. Most of these local biz owners have a really cool story, too. They started in a regular desk job, hated it, then discovered their true passion and went for it! I can hear different versions of that same inspiring story, and love hearing it every time.

This week, one of my favorite Orange County shop owners, Sarah and Mike Dowdell, are opening up a new store called Scouts Honor. Located in Irvine at Woodbury Town Center, these OC-based owners of Love and Whiskey (also in Irvine), are now focusing on refined goods for men, women, kids and the home. Here are a few sneak peeks!

I love love love that Scouts Honor will cary the owner's hand-selected clothing lines, including Almond Surf, OurCaste, and Roark - all based in OC. For us ladies, I have my eye on Scouts Honor's line of high-end denim from Mother, and handcrafted jewels from Costa Mesa-based Lili Claspe. And, of course, being a new mama myself, I'm saving my pennies for the kids section which includes pieces from Milk & Honey and Little Highbury.

One FABULOUS new thing the boutique will also offer are classes - from Pinterest-inspired crafts to closet styling and organization - this is the place to be!

Scouts Honor's official grand opening is THIS THURSDAY, April 3, 6-9pm, and of course yours truly will be there with bells on! Come Thursday and check out this little modern neighborhood shop - address is 6226 Irvine Blvd, Irvine, CA 92620 (Woodbury Town Center).

This Thursday is SPRING! Can you even believe it? Ok ok, if you're currently reading this from the East Coast (book a flight to Southern California), I'm sure it's a little harder to believe, but it's true! And not only does the change in season mean longer days and warmer nights are ahead - it means NEW SHOES! Of course. And the #1 trend for sandals this season, think: woven, natural, and caged. Here are a few picks I currently can't resist...

The Sam Edelman 'Beck' sandal - inspired by the classic gladiator, with a dash of hippie-chic sophistication. I adore the smooth leather straps, making this caged-up sandal something you'll want to stay in all summer long!

A Nordstrom exclusive (I love those, you see!), DV by Dolce Vita 'Villa' sandal has got to be the sandal of the summer. There's something child-like about this design, something simple and easy about how you can wear it. For the true bargain-hunter, turn to Target - don't you always? You may have to sacrifice a little on the quality side of things, but the on-trend look is there. Sam & Libby has a great selection at your neighborhood Target stop, and I particularly have my eyes on the Sam & Libby 'Ainsley' sandals. Priced under $30, you simply can't go wrong.

A little quirk + whimsy for your accessories!

There are tons of accessories that are currently filling my cups, bowls and dishes that line the vanity table in the corner of my bedroom (just ask the guy who sleeps next to me!). In addition to my mild obsession with shoes, I do have a semi-amazing obsession with accessories, too. With a big collection of oversized colorful earrings, metallic watches - big and small, shiny bangles and bib necklaces, there's a lot of real estate in my closet filled with these pretty things!

But my latest accessory find was dreamed up by an Austin, Texas designer, Amanda Dimova. Dimova started her style around 2006, making bold statement pieces from leather and crystals, even acrylic and wood baubles. From a one-woman operation, her brand, Vinca, is now sold worldwide - from Amsterdam to Korea - loved by customers who appreciate the brand's sheer cuteness + quirkiness! Yep, you'll notice unicorns, french sayings, and even sriracha bottles in this collection - bound and ready to grab your stylish attention.

All of the Vinca wooden and acrylic pieces are made from original drawings by designer Amanda Dimova herself, and then cut and assembled by her team in a "micro-manufacturing" type style. With most of the raw materials sourced right here from the good ol' U.S. of A., there's an unmatched quality that I notice myself in the cute wooden-diamond studs that I've been sportin'.
