Alice Melvin is an illustrator and designer based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Her work is inspired by her love of paper, print and decorative arts. Animals, birds, pattern and text occur frequently in her work along with the odd teapot as well. Angie Lewin: Plants and Places

The artist Angie Lewin has a unique vision of the natural world.

Her hugely popular prints depict in intricate detail the native flora of a variety of environments, from salt marsh and Highland loch, to flower-strewn meadow and wild garden.

Lewin finds beauty in each landscape, whatever the season, and is particularly inspired by plant forms: slender reeds, stately goatsbeard, spiky teasels and sculptural seed heads.

'Plants and Places' presents over 70 of Lewin's beautifully crafted linocuts and wood engravings.

The works are grouped according to habitat such as coast, woodland and hedgerow, and garden together with drawings, paintings and collages from Lewin's sketchbooks of grasses, seed pods, seaweed, shells and other objects that she has collected on her walks.

In an engaging introduction, Leslie Geddes-Brown meets Lewin in her studio, discusses her artistic inspirations and her fascination with plants, and describes how she creates her prints.

フランスの刺しゅう糸のブランド、DMCが手がける図案集「BIBLIOTHEQUE DMC」。

その編集を手がけたテレーズ・ドゥ・ディルモンさんは、実際に世界を旅しながら刺しゅうの図案集を完成させました。

オランダの絵本作家ハリエット・ヴァン・レーク（Harriët van Reek）のデビュー作『レイナレイナ』（邦訳のタイトルは『レナレナ』）が、東京MXテレビで7月4日よりスタートしました。

イヴ・サンローランの絵本のアニメ化『おてんばルル』が放送されていた土曜23:22～23:30の枠。『レイナレイナ』は好奇心でいっぱいの少女・レイナレイナが人間の髪を食べたいネズミに逆立ちして食べさせてあげたり、ミミズの引っ越しを手伝ったり、雨のしずくでお茶を作ったり、奇妙なエピソードが満載のキュートな絵本で、1987年に金の石筆賞を受賞しています。アニメ化を手がけるのは、1984年生まれの若き女性アニメ作家・水尻自子さん。

遡ること1150年頃に誕生した、フィンランドの伝統装飾、ヒンメリ。田園地方で生まれたヒンメリは、時代の波を越えて、今でもフィンランドの家庭や、ショップのディスプレイなどで見かけることができます。『Himmel』という、スウェーデン語で”天”を意味する言葉を語源に持つ藁細工による伝統装飾は、太陽神の誕生祭や収穫祭を12月下旬の冬至に行うヨウル（Joulu）の飾り物として、長らく用いられてきました。麦藁に紐を通してつくる正八面体を基本に、様々に発展させることによって独創的でモダンなモビールが出来上がるのです。

「Vera Neumann」実は最近までこんな素敵なデザイナーがいたなんて、知りませんでした。たまたま本で紹介されていたパターンに一目惚れ。早速ネットて検索をしていたら、PearTreeMarke tさんのサイトを見つけました。他では見られないパターンの豊富さに脱帽です。その中から私の琴線に触れたデザインの一部を紹介させていただきました。

"Vera-Neumann"

1910〜1993

彼女は、1910年スタンフォードで生まれ。NYでアートとデザインを学び、第二次世界大戦後まもなくの1964年に夫のGeorge Neumannと『Printex』という会社を設立し、キャリアをスタートさせます。

最初の作品はランチョンマットでした。リネンにシルクスクリーンの技法で植物のモチーフをプリントとしたランチョンマットを作り、NYの有名デパート『Fifth Avenue』のバイヤー『B．Altman』に見せたところ、とても気に入られて一気にたくさんのオーダーが舞い込みました。

『Vera』というトレードマーク的なファーストネームのサインは1947年から使い始め、やがて作品はキッチンリネンやランチョンマットだけではなく、さまざまな作品に広がっていきました。代表的な作品、『スカーフ』は戦後たくさんあった「パラシュート・シルク」に目を付けた事から生まれました。この発想力や柔軟性はやはり持って生まれたセンスが大きいのかな・・と思わされますね。

やがて、『Vera』の作品はより広がりを見せ、ビジネスとして成功していきます。1950年代前半には、活躍の場所をManhattan（マンハッタン）から、Ossining（オッシニング）というマンハッタンから北へ１時間ほどの郊外へ移し、工房や工場を持つことになります。

ここでは人もたくさん雇い、チームで作品を生み出していくようになっていきます。年間500−600のデザインを生み出し、幾何学模様やお花，ドットプリント・・などの『Vera』の作品として思い浮かぶようなプリントがたくさん出てきました。

1960年代後半、夫のGeorge Neumann死後、彼女は会社を巨大アパレルメーカー『Manhattan Industries』へ売ってしまいますが、その後もその会社でデザイナーとしての仕事を続けていたようです。

そして1993年（享年84歳）彼女は亡くなりましたが、彼女の死後も商標権を所有しているアトランタの会社が『Vera』の作品として製品化され続けられました。

1939年に描いたストックホルム、スルッセン駅近辺。現在と異なるのは路面電車が走っていないことくらい。

1939年に描いたストックホルム、テッシン公園。偶然にも右側のアパートに現在エクセル夫妻が住んでいる。

本の表紙にもなったストックホルムの王宮。67年経った今でもエクセル氏が描いた頃とほとんど変わっていない。

エクセル氏が描く鳥は、ファンタジーから生まれた個性的なキャラクラーばかり。もうひとつのお得意なモチーフはペン。

彼がマゼッティで手がけた作品のほとんどが詰まったサンタクロースの袋。マゼッティのクリスマスカードより。

This book has been all around the blog circuit already. I learned about it from Lena Corwin’s blog back in January and immediately ran over to Rare Device to pick up a copy. So if you haven’t seen it somewhere else at least now you won’t miss it because it’s that good. It’s all in Japanese and the rest is in Swedish so you can’t really learn a lot about him or the work, but who needs to when it’s all here is big pretty pictures. From book cover and interiors to package design to just plain illustrations, this guy did it all and did it well. Apparently Olle is one of the most respected Swedish graphic designers and his book Design=Ekonomi is used almost like a textbook at art schools. I have to say PIE books publishes some really great books. I wish their titles were more widely distributed in America.
