Production Designer Explained about Mani Ratnam's Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram in "Raavan"

The climactic fight between Abhishek Bachchan and Vikram in Raavan on a wooden bridge actually required three different bridges to be built so that the scene could be captured from different angles, says production designer Samir Chanda. And director Mani Ratnam personally oversaw the construction work.

"I had to build three bridges - one for the actors' long shots that was 210 feet long, another for their close-ups at 70 feet and the third was 30 feet long for the actors's leg work like running and falling," Chanda said.

The three bridges were built between two mountains in a road-less stretch at Malshej Ghat in Maharashtra. And 40 artisans were flown in from Himachal Pradesh to build them. Chanda revealed that Mani Ratnam would stand at the construction site from early morning till late evening, refusing to budge from the bridge-building venue.

"Mani's enthusiasm was like that of a child. We had first thought of building this bridge in Sri Lanka because they have the infrastructure and the experience of working in Hollywood units that required wooden bridges. Then we thought of building the bridge in Australia, and then South Africa. Finally I suggested we do it near Mumbai. Why spend crores when the same quality of construction is possible at a fraction of that cost?"

And to get to the bridges, Abhishek, Vikram and Aishwarya Rai and the rest of the cast had to wade through slush and mud infested with crabs. Luckily for Aishwarya, husband Abhishek would carry her in his arms to the bridge.

Chanda, who has worked on several films with Mani Ratnam, Shyam Benegal and Vishal Bharadwaj and has an experience of 26 years behind him, takes offence at the rumour that the bridges were built by Seshadri Srinivasan, the architect who designed the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

"The bridge that you see in Raavan has been designed and constructed by me and my 40 brothers from Kulu-Manali," Chanda said.

"How can anyone take away credit from us? How can Mr Seshadri build a bridge that had to be designed according to cinematic specifications? It wasn't only about safety and architectural correctness but camera angles and actors' manoeuvring power.

"Also, the bridge had to look convincing as the actors fought on it. And then it had to look equally convincing being blown up," the production designer explained.

On Sunday (June 6) afternoon Genelia and Vijay did a photo shoot for Jayam Raja’s new film Velayudham, at a studio in Saligramam.

A source close to the unit say that Vijay looks handsome in the pictures and the chemistry between the pair is rocking.

About two weeks back Hansika Motwani, the other heroine of the film did a shoot with Vijay for the same film.

Velayudham is a remake of the Telugu Nagarjuna- Soundarya Azad and has Genelia playing a news reporter and Hansika is a girl from the village. Vijay plays a larger than life modern Robinhood type of character.

Genelia has featured with Vijay earlier in Sachin, which was just an average grosser. Velayudham is a very important film for Vijay and is produced by Aascar Ravichandran.

Beautiful Actress of Bollywood Deepika Padukone, who has been linked to Farhan Akhtar, Shahid Kapoor and most recently liquor baron Vijay Mallya’s son Siddharth, is unfazed by the rumours and says she has learnt to accept the fact that all this comes with the work she does.

”It makes no difference to me because I know that I am leading a life I want. I understand that it comes with the work I do and I am fine with it. I am very happy with my life and the work I am doing,” Padukone, who was in the capital to inaugurate the Power Biking Studio of Anatomy Health Club, told IANS.

The actress is also shooting for her new film “Break Ke Baad” starring Imran Khan in Delhi.A self-confessed fitness freak, Padukone feels that regular workouts, yoga, healthy eating and positive thinking is what makes her look fit.”I think everybody’s body type is different and it reacts differently to different work outs. It is important for you to understand what suits your body and exercise accordingly,” she said.”I do a lot of yoga.

Although I eat everything but at the same time I know there are certain kinds of food that I put on weight with so I try to avoid them. I think eating healthy, regular workouts and positive thinking can help anybody look better,” she added.Unlike other Bollywood actresses, the 24-year-old doesn’t believe in being size zero.”I don’t think it is healthy to be size zero.

Deepika refuses to take the tag of being the lucky mascot for Mallya’s IPL team Banglore Royal Challengers.”I think if the team is playing well the credit should go to all the players. It is very unfair to say that I am the lucky mascot and give me the credit,” she said.

Over all effects of Hard working like shooting and travelling continuously finally caught up with Katrina Kaif. Day before yesterday ( i.e. March 17), the actress collapsed on the sets of Farah Khan’s ‘Tees Maar Khan’ in Malshej Ghat.

The unit, including her co-star Akshay Kumar, got very worried, since they were shooting in a place without proper medical facilities. So a doctor from Mumbai was called in to check up on Katrina.

Apparently, Katrina was given a saline drip and told to take complete rest. It turned out that the actress had fainted because of low blood pressure; the extreme heat in the location also contributed to her feeling weak.

Add the stress of work – a series of movie and advertisement shoots in different locations – and it’s a recipe for ill health.

We hope Katrina takes it easy, and gets back to being completely fit real soon.It has been noted that in the recent past Katrina getting suffered from many like this one. So lets all hope she cures fully and get back to her work.

2010 Oscars award with Avatar Movie

The 2010 Oscars is behind us now and looking back, this year's battle appears to be the David-Goliath show at the podium. The lesser mortal gave a big blow to Cameron's Goliath 'Avatar' - the much anticipated mega movie of all-time.

Much to the 'hurt' of King James, his ex-wife took away the laurels becoming the first women ever in history to win the best director's Oscar coinciding perfectly with Women's Day! More than the battle of the sexes, the ex's sweet revenge or changing paradigms in Hollywood, 'Avatar's thumbs down at the Oscars is a matter of bigger magnitude. Commiserating with 'Avatar' fans, I couldn't get over the thought of why the epic blockbuster failed to impress the Academy committee.

Avatar has been going strong, grossing billions all over the world, breaking the 12- year collection record of 'Titanic'. 'Hurt Locker' on the other hand, is film people have started giving a thought to after its Oscar success. Why did 'Avatar' fail to have a make an impact at the Oscars?

Often the real has an edge over the surreal. Though Avatar narrated a story which has never ever been told before - out of emptiness, 'Hurt Locker' told the story of bomb defusing squad; something more real and happening. Thus it was like a battle between live-action performance versus digital technology. If the audience loved the gigantic weird looking Avatar over Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), then the credit definitely goes to technical innovation.

Besides, Cameron's baby - the concept of performance-capture or motion capture - which he had used in many of his earlier films was something too novel to the old school of acting where actors are judged by expression of the feelings and emotions over technical perfection. But Cameron himself had made it clear that his attempt was to capture the 'emotion' calling it performance capture technology as it includes capturing even the subtlest expressions of the actor and converting them to animate digital characters.

The success of the movie depends largely on audience interaction. The audience needs to empathise with the characters and in 'Hurt Locker', it was more a direct involvement while in 'Avatar', the involvement was further removed because of extensive usage of technology.

But it would be dire injustice if you say 'Avatar'lacked emotions. It had everything - exposing the greed of humans, the decline of morals, and the ultimate victory of justice - redefining the word humanity in a rather abstract way. But again the plot required that mode of expression...the very concept of the movie would have made no impact if it was told in a different manner. Cameron could have made real or rather say clumsier Navi's but it's not about that. One must understand what he was trying to bring up there.

Some would say Avatar didn't bring tears to their eyes, but can they say that they watched the movie for 2 hours and 43 minutes simply appreciating the technical perfection? The beauty of Pandora owes to technical perfection, but if you have really felt being there, it has got something got to do with the story concept more than mere perfection.

In fact performance-capture isn't that easy as it sounds. The pains beyond all their effort do require a better appreciation. Cameron and crew would be happy about the money they amassed, but nothing compares to the Academy honor. Four years of tiring effort of the crew deserved more than three Oscars. We may get another 'Hurt Locker', but another 'Avatar' ain't that easy.

A decade back, Cameron exclaimed at the summit of his achievement - "I'm the King of the world!", but he had to give away his throne to a Queen this time! But still, the king has got the masses! And the risk he took will take the movie industry to a long way.

Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor have finally decided to leave their acrimonious

Last week Karan Johar played the catalyst, making Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor not only acknowledge each other’s presence but actually strike up a conversation, and a pretty warm one at that.

The venue for this patch up was Shah Rukh Khan’s bungalow, Mannat, where King Khan had hosted a celebration for My Name Is Khan. Says a source, “Shahid and Kareena came face to face and everyone thought they would simply ignore each other like they have on so many occasions in the past.

But this time, Karan happened to be present right there and instead of marching past each other, they slowed down for a bit. And the rest, as they say, is history.”

Even after the ice was broken, neither Shahid or Kareena seemed in a rush to get back to more comfortable company. They had a pretty warm exchange and a little later even Saif, who was present at the party, joined them.

“Shahid and Kareena have finally decided to leave their acrimonious past behind them. This was very evident in the manner all three of them - Shahid, Kareena and Saif - interacted with each other at Shah Rukh’s party,” adds our source.

While both Shahid and Kareena could not be reached for comment, Kareena’s official spokesperson said, “Kareena has no problem with anybody, including Shahid.” For the record, Shahid and Kareena, who were in a serious relationship for three years, parted ways in 2007, a few days before Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met hit the theatres.

Ajith has finally got the support of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi. Thalai has been fighting a lone battle against industry bigwigs following his controversial February 6 speech.

Karunanidhi referred to Ajith as “Thumbai Poo”, (Lily) a flower known for its whiteness, and used as an acronym for good people in Tamil. Karunanidhi said some vested interests were trying to twist his words out of context and create a rift within the industry.

The CM also said Ajith visited him at his home and had clarified about his speech and in no way did the actor’s controversial speech show any disrespect towards him. He also requested the organizers of the function not to precipitate matters and to let things settle down.

Now with the CM openly supporting him, none of the film organizations would dare to take action or continue with their anti- Ajith tirade.

Manisha Koirala is shooting in Chennai for Kollywood Movie "Maapillai"

Manisha Koirala is shooting in Chennai for Suraj directed Maapillai being made by Sun Pictures.

Manisha is playing Dhanush’s arrogant mother-in-law in the film where Hansika Motwani will play her daughter.

Maapillai is a remake of Rajinikanth’s 1989 film with the same title. The film revolves around a clash between an arrogant mother-in-law who always tries to be one-up on her smart alec son-in-law.

Earlier the team, had tried to rope in Sridevi, Tabu or Jayaprada but nothing worked. It is going to be Manisha’s comeback in Tamil films after eight years. It is ironical that Manisha’s last release was Baba with Rajinikant whose real life ‘Maapillai’ (son-in-law) Dhanush is playing her Maapillai in reel life.

Information About Sachin Tendulkar has scored the first ever double-century

Gwalior: India's Sachin Tendulkar has scored the first ever double-century in one-day international cricket, reaching the landmark against South Africa.

Tendulkar's 200 not out on Wednesday beat the previous highest score of 194, made by Zimbabwe's Charles Coventry against Bangladesh in Bulawayo last August and Saeed Anwar of Pakistan against India at Chennai in May 1997.

Tendulkar's previous best was 186 not out against New Zealand at Hyderabad in November 1999.

Allu Arjun stars as Arya, an orphan who befriends Ajay (Navdeep). The two share a bizarre friendship but soon Ajay is adopted by a rich couple. Eventually the two grow up to be thick friends, although Ajay maintains his distance from Arya. Arya forces Ajay to give him a job in his firm and promises that he would always show exemplary behaviour. Geetha (Kajal) also joins the same company and both Arya and Ajay fall in love with her. The rest of the story is about how both of them try to express their love to Geetha and whom does she choose in the end.

This film is rated 3 out of 5.The film redefines the word ‘Style’! Allu Arjun is back with a totally new look and style. The entire story is woven around Arya’s character. Allu Arjun gets into the skin of the character so much that it’s difficult to understand his psyche. In this film ‘Arya’ is quirky, talkative and confused.

His dances moves are some of the bestin his career so far and it’s a treat to watch him in all the songs. Allu Arjun’s costumes are going to be a rage in the coming few days. Navdeep is adequate in his role. He plays the role of an insecure guy who’s always suspicious of his friend’s motives. Kajal is pretty good in her role as Geetha.

She looks extremely charming in first half, while her role takes a backseat in the second half. Mukesh Rishi, Sayaji Shinde andAjay played other important roles and they are good, especially Ajay-Allu Arjun’s episode is well written. Brahmanandam is hilarious in his role as Dr.Dasavatharam. Shraddha Das is alright in her glamorous role. Sukumar’s latest version of ‘Arya-2’ differs a lot from ‘Arya’; so much that it’s hard to instantly fall in love with this character who behaves sometimes like a psycho and at times totally confused.

The film is too long and hence there are too many dialogues especially for Allu Arjun which often tend to beat around the bush. Geetha, in this film is a suave, smart and an extremely confident lady. However, she never becomes a part of any of the conversations between Arya andAjay.

The transition of Geetha’s feelings towards Arya could have been portrayed in a better way. Another problem with the film is its flow and narration. Every individual scene is stunningly shot, however the story narration has its share of ups and downs. The climax ofthe film is too melodramatic and it could have been kept short.

One reason why the earlier film ‘Arya’ was an instant success was because of its simplicity. Moreover, Arya was a vulnerable guy who just wanted his love to be reciprocated. However, in Arya-2 a lot of things have changed. Now, Arya is not only greedy, but also will sacrifice anything if his friend wants the same.

This unconventional behavior rubs on to the audience and in the end it’s difficult to empathize or sympathize with him.The film has its share of brilliance, especially the scenes between Brahmanandam and his team, conversations between Allu Arjun and Navdeep and the entire episode involving Ajay.

The film is all about style. ‘Arya-2’ is the kind of film which you will either dazzle you or bore you to death, there’s no middle way. Either way we end up hallucinating under its influence!

The unit of the film ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ with Priyanka Chopra

Apparently, the unit of the film ‘Anjaana Anjaani’ is basking in the delight of this heavenly pleasure in the middle of work!

The lead actress of ‘Anjaana Anjaani’, Priyanka Chopra has been constantly expressing the delight of her shoots that is scheduled amid the ocean.

“I’m currently shooting on a boat for Anjaana Anjaani in the middle of the ocean pretty much the whole day.”

‘Anjaana Anjaani’ is a forthcoming Bollywood film directed by ‘Salaam Namaste’ and ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ famed Siddharth Anand, which stars Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra in lead.

South India Actor Surya in Aadhavan Movie - Review

If laughter is the best medicine along with mass masala items, then veteran director KS Ravikumar has earned his stripes again with Aadhavan. Add Suriya, who looks sensational in a role that has negative shades and lots of comedy. The actor manages to pump some clean fun and make it the ideal family entertainer for Diwali.

The wafer-thin storyline depends more on Suriya’s star power to cruise through two hours and 45 minutes. Aadhavan (Suriya) is a hired assassin who works in tandem with Ibrahim Rowther (Sayaji Shinde) and his son (Anand Babu) in Kolkata. Justice Subramaniyam (late Malayalam actor Murali), is about to give his final judgment in an organ trade case where hundreds of children died due to the greed of a doctor, Abdul Kulkarni (Rahul Dev).

Kulkarni approaches Rowther with a contract to kill the judge and Aadhavan starts his next mission. But for the first time in his life, the ace assassin misses his mark and Aadhavan, through the help of Bannerji (Vadivel), comes into close contact with the Judge’s large family consisting of his mother (Saroja Devi), niece Tara (Nayanthara) and others. Soon Aadhavan finds out certain dark secrets and also develops a soft corner for Tara. Finally, the hunter turns hunted as the film hurtles towards the climax.

Only problem with Ramesh Kanna’s story is that it does not have a single original bone in its body, and is inspired from various movies. The film moves at a leisurely pace in the first half (92 minutes), depending mainly on Suriya and Vadivel's bickering. The story does not move forward. The second half is racy (73 minutes), despite a predictable climax. The Kollywood mass hero turns into a one-man fighting machine and saves his loved ones after doing the impossible.

The music of Harris Jayaraj is hummable, though the placement of songs just does not gel with the narration, with Hasili Fisili and Yaeno Yaeno in the second half, which looks alike.

The action scenes of Kanal Kannan and Franz Spilhaus are sensational, especially the hit and run chase picturised in Kolkata in the first half. Also, Ganesh’s camerawork has sheen. The special effects job where Suriya is transformed into a 10-year-old look realistic.

It is an out and out Suriya show. The film rides on the magic of the actor, and his zany shenanigans alone makes it worth a watch. Nayanthara looks beautiful and classy, and for a change, her glamour image has not been exploited. She comes across as the girl-next-door.

Murali, in his last film, puts up a convincing performance while Saroja Devi as the Paati is okay with her trademark, excessive make-up. Vadivel is a scream and is present throughout the film.

Ranging through a wide field of comedy laced with action, Aadhavan is good fun while it lasts. It’s a roller-coaster ride of pure unadulterated masala.
