Movie Review: It's KJo-Wala Love! Served fresh and piping hot from the Dharma college canteen of romance. And it's a high (class) school that you'd never want to miss a lecture of, ever. Except that it has its own set of Karan rules. Read the prospectus: 1. Leave your text-books at home but ensure you're carrying your designer bags and heels. 2. Drive a Ferrari to school, or if you're poorer, take a bike. 3. Dating, mating, separating and love lessons shall be part of the syllabus. 4. Girls, don your shortest minis, and guys, rip off the shirts. Welcome to St. Teresa's. Rest assured, it'll be a well-rounded entertainment experience.

ST is run by a happy and 'gay' Dean - Yogendra Vashisth (Rishi), who drools over John Abraham, and when he sees the much-married hot coach ( Ronit Roy) usko 'coach coach' hota hai!. The hotshot student of the school is rich brat Rohan Nanda (welcoming Varun Dhawan), who zips around in his hot-wheels, flirts, and dreams of being a Rockstar. His childhood sweetheart, another super rich kid, Shanaya (super filmy intro, Alia! Alia! Alia!), is Ms. Popularity and Drama Queen (don't miss the red pout) known for her brands and beauty. Enter (grandly) Abhimanyu (Sidharth), a middle-class boy with mega dreams, a chalta-phirta KBC (Mr Know-it-all), and the in-house Milkha Singh.

There's a typical rich-poor division in school, the Richie Rich Tatas v/s the bechara gareeb Batas. But with Abhimanyu's entry the competition heats up - With both boys showing ample abs & attitude (teeny-weeny trunks, for all you drooling women!), chasing the same gal (Shanaya), and aiming for the same trophy - Student of the Year! Their equations from friends-to-foes changing quicker than their school grades. Their muscles rippling more than their egos; the competition gets tougher and the boys - leaner and meaner. Their loyal friends adding chaos to campus - Eg. Tanya who tries everything in the 'date- bait-book' to seduce Rohan (including push-up bras); the Parsi 'Pseudo' - the 'minority report'-card in this bunch; Jeetu - Rohan's chamcha; tomboy Shruti - Shanaya's other half (minus her designer do).

This is what we call grandiose debut(s)!!! Karan's definitely swooshed his cane for this one. The trio has done him proud and has set a high 'bench-mark'. Varun expresses and emotes with superb confidence and storms the dance floor with swag. Sidharth stands equally tall, has amazing screen presence and is man of few words and many smouldering emotions. Alia wins your heart with her cuteness, effervescence and naivete. Yes, she reminds you of Kareena's Poo days (with all that oomph), but she comes into her own. The chemistry between the three (even outside the lab) grows on you.

Shabhash! SOTY's supporting cast is brilliant, each have favourite subjects and score high in those areas. But the star who scores a straight A-Plus is undoubtedly Rishi Kapoor - simply superb. The other guy who can take a bow is the director.

The film is full of KJo-isms - it's larger-than-life, colourful, lavish, beautifully shot and directed. With medleys, dance, drama and everything good-looking (from cast to couches, dorms to discos).

Vishal-Shekhar have caught the right beat with this high-school musical, and the songs are as fresh as the leads. The story is simple and entertains throughout, though it's not the first time this marathon of an idea has run past the screen. 'SOTY' takes you back to your books and sinks you in true-blue Bollywood syllabus, following the 'formula' - Two boys, one girl, one glorious trophy and lots of testosterone.

If this one doesn't pump you up with nostalgia, it's time for you to go back to school already!

Tip Off: You may not like this movie if bubble-gum romances, picture-perfect worlds and candy-floss clouds are not your idea of a movie-going experience.

'English Vinglish’ review: It has a long lasting, feel good factor!

Gauri Shinde has donned the director’s hat to tell the story of Sashi (Sridevi), a middle-aged Maharashtrian housewife who earns her own money by making sumptuous ladoos (which happens to be her passion too) and selling them to the connoisseurs. A lot of women would identify with Sashi since she is one of those dedicated yet taken-for-granted homemakers who are ridiculed for their poor linguistic skills by their English speaking family. In the movie, Sashi finds herself being an object of constant potshots by her husband(Adil Hussain

who has little respect for her real talent and her 7th grade daughter who feels ashamed to even introduce her mother school folks.

So when an underestimated and belittled Sashi flies off to New York to lend a helping hand at her niece’s wedding, she smartly grabs the opportunity to enroll herself into English speaking classes that promise to teach the language within a period of flat four weeks. In no time, Sashi becomes the most committed student in her class, starts watching English films at night and doing her homework religiously- all to polish her English reading and writing skills and more importantly to earn respect that she duly deserves from her family. In the midst of her literary pursuit, she also finds her classmate cum friend – a Frenchman (an irresistible Mehdi Nebbou) getting attracted to her plain simple personality. Yet, despite several barriers that come her way, Sashi manages to achieve her goal (that includes ordering her meal at the café with super confidence) which could be an inspiration to many aspiring English learners.

Going beyond the ‘ordinary’ story of ‘English Vinglish’, it is a movie that teaches a lot of life lessons. First, it gives a peek into the feelings of those who are not good at reading and writing the language and find themselves becoming a subject of disdain and jibe whether at home or in public. Second, it is a crash course on mannerisms for all tho
se ‘refined’ husbands and children out there who believe that the woman of the house is only worth taking nonsense; notwithstanding the fact that she goes out of her way to please them, without a complaint. Third, like I said before, the film is all about dedication towards one’s aims and a relentless pursuit towards your dream, come what may.

Sridevi as the de-glam Sashi looks completely stunning and gets very much into the skin of her character in the film. The way she emotes when she is looked down upon for her poor angrezi is worthy of a good round of applause. It is safe to say that after ‘Sadma’, Chaalbaaz’ and ‘Chandni’, she will always be remembered for her versatile act in ‘English Vinglish’. Clearly, this movie is one of her best works till date.

Moving on to film’s direction, kudos to Gauri Shinde for narrating a story which leaves such an impact on the viewers. Also, a special thanks to her (she has also written the story) for making a film on such a unique storyline which apparently has a close connection to the life of Shinde’s mother and perhaps, many other Indian women out there.

Amit Trivedi has given cool and foot tapping music to the film while designer Sabyasachi has done his job very well in dressing up Sridevi in colorful khadi sarees that suit her age and role.

Overall, ‘English Vinglish’ is a complete family entertainer and worth every penny! Yes, Sridevi is back!

"Bollywood" getting b grade! Who is responsible?

Bollywood has been on a changing trend since actors like Mallika Sherawat, Bipasha Basu, Sherlyn Chopra, Esha Gupta, Paoli Dam and last but not the least Sunny Leone stepped their foot in the Tinsel Town. These have categorized the conventional Hindi cinema in at least two parts, adult and non adult certified films.

These have just not adapted the culture from the west and entrenched in the Indian Cinema but also inspired our leading ladies like Vidya Balan, Rani Mukherjee and Kareena Kapoor to get inclined to skin shows in films. From Dirty Picture to Heroine, the female actors dominated the silver screen for revealing their scorching side.

There are also directors in the industry, who have apparently imported the Hollywood mores for B'wood. Ace filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt believes that sex is an essential part of our films as it grabs the attention of moviegoers.

Films are often considered as stress busters, but does skin show in films, the only way to release ones' tensions? The question rose because majority of Hindi films today portray the seductress chemistry between a male and female stars. Rather, the first picture that comes to our minds while considering films like Jism 2, The Dirty Picture, Hate Story and recently released Heroine is of a sex oriented, sizzling lady brandishing, self, on the big screen.

The fashion of putting an item number in a film, yet again marks the portrayal of boldness as these tracks exhibit the spice in a particular film. Why our filmmakers and actors diving in the seas of eroticism? Are they fascinated with the response few models get on social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter?

This could be another factor of the change in the mindsets of Bollywood directors! Models like Poonam Pandey, Sherlyn Chopra, Veena Malik and Rozlyn Khan sit on top of the headlines for the maiden reason, skin show. These just not manage to trend the internet world but also people let them sit on their eyelids. Their profession apparently is to screen their skin on social platform, get into erotic conversations and indulge into everything that helps them grabbing the maximum spotlight.

Do these models inspire our filmmakers, actors to display the dirtiest picture on the big screen? Well, it is still an unanswerable question but what would you say on the paradigm-shift of simplicity to modernity in our very own Bollywood films.

The Marvel mega-franchise, with cinematic roots that date back to Jon Favreau’s “Iron Man” in 2008, is still expanding, with a S.H.I.E.L.D. television series on ABC and a number of movie sequels in the works, including “Iron Man 3,” “Captain America 2,” “Thor: The Dark World” and an as-yet-untitled “Avengers” sequel.

The superhero blockbusters proved themselves vehicles for established stars (Robert Downey Jr.) and breakout performers (Tom Hiddleston) as the muscled men chosen to portray the comic classics on the big screen. And since the $1.5-billion success of “The Avengers,” writer-director Joss Whedon — previously best known for creating cult classic TV series “Firefly” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” — has become a big-budget director and a household name.

"If you have seen Madhur's other film, Heroine has nothing new to offer except Kareena Kapoor. She has given the role of her life and is the only reason to watch the film."

Story:

The story is about superstar Mahi Arora, who has the world at her feet for a bit in the beginning of the film. Sadly, her happy days get over soon, when she tries playing stupid and over emotional about her boyfriend Aryan Khanna (Arjun Rampal). Mahi is more interested in settling down with Aryan, rather than concentrating on her rocketing Bollywood career. This leads to her downfall and Mahi realises that she needs to fight back.

Then comes Mahie's long and monotonous fight to win back her glory, that tends to give us more headaches than evoking interests. No miracle happens, Mahi loses on every aspect. Her affairs end up as disasters, her movie fails. And, then what? Mahi comes up with a new idea that finally worked. What's that? A DIRTY PUBLICITY STUNT...that saves Mahi's sinking career.

Bhandarkar's previous attempt in the film Fashion exposes behind-the-scenes realities and unspoken truths of the glamour industry, which worked well with the audience. But the director does a grave mistake to repeat the same in Heroine. For those who have watched Madhur's earlier movies are well aware about this dirty industry. We have already heard about the fake smiles, the secrets, dirty politics, incredible heights of fame & the lonely depths of failures in Bollywood. Anything new, Mr Bhandarkar? We do not need a Heroine to re-watch these old stories again. Moreover, Heroine is too long to endure the pain of being patient.

Heroine's music is big let down. The plot of the movie is too confusing, and we all know, no one prefers to break his/her head on a messy plot. A little more editing could have saved the movie's fate. But, ALAS! This again turns out to be a big setback.

Performances:

Kareena Kapoor steals the show with her dead-drop gorgeous looks and stupendous performance. No wonder, Kareena does a superb job, but somewhere down the line, we aren't so much convinced. A poor Mahi's career is on a decline. She's left with nothing, she's all alone, but we aren't left sympathising for her. Courtesy, a lifeless plot. The two leading hunks of Heroine, Arjun Rampal and Randeep Hooda were equally convincing in their roles. Supporting casts like Shahana Goswami, Divya Dutta does a great job.

Review:

Heroine has shown every real controversy that people have already witnessed like an actor who edits his co-actor's role out of fear, actress joining hands with businessman when there career are fading, a leaked MMS, a gay designer and many other.

Kareena has performed superbly and acted the way you have never seen before. She has always been glamorous but this time she has given some scenes that we couldn't expect.

Other actors, Arjun as a confused and stud actor, Randeep as cricketer and lover, Divya as PR, Sanjay and Shahana in their small roles have played their role well.

Verdict:

On the whole, Heroine is old wine in new bottle. The film lacks life and passion and moreover drably monotonous. In one word, we aren't wowed at the climax of the film.

The life of a top notch Bollywood star is like that of a heady cocktail of success, power and richness. For someone, who rules the roost of the showbiz, needs to play smart and safe to retain the stardom. But for those who fail to retain spoils, witnesses the hell.

When the question comes to unravel these sordid sagas onscreen, no one can perform a better work than Madhur Bhandarkar. But was Bhandarkar's latest release Heroine, a masterpiece, like his previous projects?

Heroine features Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal and Randeep Hooda in the leads. The movie reveals the delightful, bold, shocking, scandalous, sensitive exposing scenes behind the glitz and glamour that our film stars reside. Well, hold on for a minute! Doesn't that sound a known plot?

Though the actor is currently in Chicago, he is super-excited about the theatrical promo that has generated a deafening buzz in the trade and with the public. "The promotion work onTalaash has begun, and though I am in Chicago, I'm very much involved in the whole process, thanks to the internet," he says.

The two-minute trailer of this suspense drama that shows Aamir with his leading ladies Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor starts from Mumbai's upmarket Marine Drive-kind-of-location and moves through the seedy bylanes and hotels of the Maximum City's red-light district, Kamathipura.

The sharp cuts and razor-sharp editing are so engaging that it leaves the audience stunned and asking for more. According to Aamir, Talaash brings to focus the genre of cult 'suspense' classics like Madhubala-Ashok Kumar's Howrah Bridge (1958) and Dilip Kumar-Vyjayanthimala'sMadhumati (1958) that highlighted a city's back lanes, its night life, and also had engaging music. "Do you remember Aiyiye Meherbaan Baithiye Jaanejaan (Howrah Bridge)," he asks, crooning the hit ditty that was picturised on the ethereal Madhubala. "Somehow this genre of cinema went missing in later years," he rues. "Talaash is a thriller that shows a city's night life, underbelly, hookers..."
Honestly, such flattering reactions to the trailer are not surprising. Talaash is after all Aamir's next release, coming after a gap of nearly two-and-a-half years. Sources say that the Bollywoodsuperstar is so confident of the content doing the talking that he has specifically asked the marketing team to focus just on the promo and the roll-out of the title track that features him with Rani and Kareena, rather than resort to any marketing gimmicks.
Putting rumours of his alleged fallout with director Reema to rest, Aamir says, "At the moment, my sights are trained on Talaash. It is also my first release after Dhobi Ghat. Reema has been great to work with. I find her to be an excellent director. As an actor, there were so many things I missed out about the character I'm playing, but Reema pointed them out to me, and I was able to use her inputs to enhance my role. She is very perceptive, and since she is also a writer, she brings that additional strength to the table. She's very clear as to what she wants from her actors, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with her.''
