Yesterday wasn’t just Mother’s Day…it was also Rogation Sunday. Rogation Sunday begins Rogationtide, a series of days leading up to the Feast of the Ascension.

Rogation Days are an ancient custom which have been being observed since the 5th century. Rogation—to ask, as in “interrogate”—we ask God’s blessing of the harvest, of the earth and sea. We remind ourselves that we are the stewards of Creation, neither the authors nor the owners of it. Originally an agricultural observance, it has been broadened and made more inclusive—the crops, the catch of the sea, the fruits of our labors in all their aspects.

An ancient pagan custom was “beating the bounds”, with a procession walking out the boundary lines of the village and marking the bounds with stakes. Sticks of willow and birch were used to strike the stakes; hence, “beating the bounds”. Subsequently the custom became incorporated into Rogation Days celebration, particularly in England, in which the parishes are clearly defined, contiguous with adjacent parishes. Rogation Day was celebrated by walking the boundaries of the parish and acknowledging in this way our tangible stewardship.

As the countries, including our own, became more industrialized and less agrarian, we have seen a lessening of the celebration of Rogation—and we are the worse for it. Our “new” Book of Common Prayer (1979) sneakily de-emphasized Rogation Days and Rogation Sunday, as they were annotated in the 1928 BCP. But we should do our best to remember therm. They are privileged times to celebrate stewardship, to remind ourselves of our roles, not as masters or owners, but as stewards.

Rogation Days are to honor God for His creation, and to pray for the land and sea and the gifts of labor, and for the needs of all. The traditional Rogation Days are the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before Ascension Day. Rogation Sunday is the Sixth Sunday after Easter. Great music is in the 1940 & 1982 Episcopal hymnal for celebrating Rogationtide such as “O Jesus crowned with all renown”, “Fairest Lord Jesus”, “We plow the fields and scatter”, “Now the green blade rises”, “O worship the King.”

St. Francis, in his “Canticle of Brother Sun”, wrote: “May thou be praised, my Lord, for our sister, mother earth, who sustains and governs and produces fruits with colored flowers and green plants.”

The Collect for Rogation Sunday from the 1928 BCP:

“O LORD, from whom all good things do come; Grant to us thy humble servants, that by thy holy inspiration we may think those things that are good, and by thy merciful guiding may perform the same; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.”

10. The very first St. Patrick’s Day parade was not in Ireland, but in the United States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City.

9. St. Partick’s birth name was Maewyn Succat. He took the name Patrick upon becoming a priest later in his life.

8. While wearing green clothing, eating green food, and even drinking green beer is said to commemorate St. Patrick’s use of the shamrock, blue was the original color of his vestments, and the color associated with him up until the 19th century.

7. As a young boy, Patrick professed no interest in Christianity. It was not until aged 16, when he was kidnapped and sent overseas to tend sheep as a slave in the chilly, mountainous countryside of Ireland for seven years that he developed a very deep belief in the religion.

6. The most popular Irish toast on St Patrick’s Day goes as follows, “May the roof above us never fall in, and may we friends beneath it never fall out.”

5. Since 1962, the people of Chicago, US have been dying their city’s river green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Originally, about 100 tons of dye were used for the job, though now the Windy City uses about 40 tons to make the tradition more environmentally friendly.

4. The phrase, “Drowning The Shamrock,” is from the custom of floating a shamrock on the top of whiskey before drinking it. The Irish believe that if you keep the custom, then you will have a prosperous year.

3. There are 34.7 million United States residents with Irish ancestry. This number is more than five times the population of Ireland itself.

2. Contrary to popular folklore, St. Patrick never chased any snakes out of Ireland. In fact, there has never been any record of snakes living anywhere near the Emerald Isle.

1. St. Patrick is being honored at the potluck dinner this coming Sunday. Bring something Irish (or Scottish…or just plain tasty) in honor of this missionary bishop!

Many people add more Scripture readings to their Lenten discipline. Here is an effective way to do it, by the first Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt. Rev’d J. C. Ryle.

1. Begin reading your Bible this very day. The way to do a thing — is to do it; and the way to read the Bible — is actually to read it! It is not merely meaning, or wishing, or resolving, or intending, or thinking about it — which will advance you one step. You must positively read. There is no royal road in this matter, any more than in the matter of prayer. If you cannot read yourself, you must persuade somebody else to read it to you. But one way or another, through eyes or ears — the words of Scripture must actually pass before your mind.

2. Read the Bible with an earnest desire to understand it. Do not think for a moment, that the great object is to turn over a certain quantity of printed paper, and that it matters nothing whether you understand it or not. Some ignorant people seem to imagine, that all is done if they advance so many chapters every day, though they may not have a notion what they are all about, and only know that they have pushed on their bookmark ahead so many pages. This is turning Bible reading into a mere ritual form. Settle it down in your mind as a general principle, that a Bible not understood — is a Bible that does no good! Say to yourself often as you read,“What is this all about?” Dig for the meaning like a man digging for gold.

3. Read the Bible with child-like faith and humility. Open your heart — as you open God’s book, and say,“Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening!” Resolve to believe implicitly whatever you find there, however much it may run counter to your own desires and prejudices. Resolve to receive heartily every statement of truth — whether you like it or not. Beware of that miserable habit into which some readers of the Bible fall — they receive some doctrines because they like them; and they reject others because they are condemning to themselves, or to some relation, or friend. At this rate, the Bible is useless! Are we to be judges of what ought to be in God’s Word? Do we know better than God? Settle it down in your mind — that you will receive all and believe all, and that what you cannot understand — you will take on trust. Remember, when you pray — that you are speaking to God, and God hears you. But, remember, when you read Scripture — that God is speaking to you, and you are not to “dictate,” but to listen!

4. Read the Bible in a spirit of obedience and self-application. Sit down to the study of it with a daily determination that you will live by its rules, rest on its statements, and act on its commands. Consider, as you travel through every chapter, “How does this affect my thinking and daily conduct? What does this teach me?” It is poor work to read the Bible from mere curiosity, and for speculative purposes — in order to fill your head and store your mind with mere opinions; while you do not allow the book to influence your heart and life. That Bible is read best — which is practiced most!

5. Read the Bible daily. Make it a part of every day’s business to read and meditate on some portion of God’s Word. Private means of grace are just as needful every day for our souls — as food and clothing are for our bodies. Yesterday’s food will not feed the laborer today; and today’s food will not feed the laborer tomorrow. Do as the Israelites did in the wilderness. Gather your manna fresh every morning. Choose your own seasons and hours. Do not scramble over and hurry your reading. Give your Bible the best, and not the worst part of your time! But whatever plan you pursue, let it be a rule of your life to visit the throne of grace and God’s Word every day.

6. Read all of the Bible — and read it in an orderly way. I fear there are many parts of the Word which some people never read at all. This is to say at the least, a very presumptuous habit. “All Scripture is profitable.” [2 Timothy 3:16]. To this habit may be traced that lack of well-proportioned views of truth, which is so common in this day. Some people’s Bible-reading is a system of perpetual ‘dipping and picking’. They do not seem to have an idea of regularly going through the whole book.

7. Read the Bible fairly and honestly. Determine to take everything in its plain, obvious meaning — and regard all forced interpretations with great suspicion. As a general rule, whatever a verse of the Bible seems to mean — it does mean! Cecil’s rule is a very valuable one, “The right way of interpreting Scripture is to take it as we find it, without any attempt to force it into any particular theological system.”

8. Read the Bible with Christ continually in view. The grand primary object of all Scripture, is to testify of Jesus! Old Testament ceremonies are shadows of Christ. Old Testament judges are types of Christ. Old Testament prophecies are full of Christ’s sufferings, and of Christ’s glory yet to come. The first coming and the second; the Lord’s humiliation and His glorious kingdom; His cross and the crown shine forth everywhere in the Bible. Keep fast hold on this clue, if you would read the Bible aright!

I might easily add to these hints, if space permitted. Few and short as they are — you will find them most profitable when implemented.

A helpful FAQ about fasting from Christ Church Plano.

There are many questions about fasting. Some of the questions arise because it is not a typical practice for many Americans and, thus, we have little experience with this discipline. Our culture is one that, by and large, eats often and eats a lot. In the Dallas area, there are restaurants everywhere, and many of these are packed on a regular basis. Fasting challenges this way of living. More importantly, it offers the opportunity to draw us closer to God and to open our lives to the amazing work of the Holy Spirit.

The following Q & A answers basic questions regarding fasting.

“What is fasting?”
To fast means to abstain from food and sometimes drink. This might mean giving up a single meal or abstaining from food for an entire day. I would encourage you not to give up water unless you are experienced in fasting and this is a regular discipline in your life. Even then, if you are planning to fast more than a day or two without water, you should consult your physician.

What kind of fast are we doing as a church during Lent?
We encourage everyone to try a 24-hour fast that gives up two main meals. For example: begin your fast Tuesday evening (February 21) following dinner. Continue to fast from all food until the following evening (February 22). Remember to drink water throughout the day.

“How do I break a fast?”
If you skip a single meal, just eat normally after that. If you participate with us in a 24-hour fast, let your first meal be a little smaller than normal, filled with fruits and vegetables, and avoid foods containing a lot of saturated fat (e.g. burgers, pizza, or cheesecake). Consider options like a fruit smoothie, a grilled chicken breast or whole grains to break the fast.

“How do I use my time when I am fasting?”
Typically, a person spends a minimum of one hour every day engaged in eating. When that is taken away, this is the perfect time to devote oneself to prayer and reading the Scriptures.

“How do I do it in secret when the entire congregation is participating?”
When Jesus says we are to fast for our Father in secret, the point has more to do with not drawing attention to yourself. If you let everyone know how much you have been fasting and how hard it has been, but how you are being so faithful to God throughout, then that’s drawing attention to yourself. Jesus says to act normally. Basically, act like you are not fasting. In fact, it can be an encouragement for a husband and wife or a few friends to fast together. They can inspire one another throughout the day. They can look out for one another. That way, the wife won’t cook a wonderful meal for the whole family that would tempt the fasting husband or vice versa. They can instead do the fast together.

“What if I am diabetic or have other health issues?”
You may want to consult your physician before attempting a fast. You may want to abstain from something else like television or the internet. For some, while you give up food, you may need to drink fruit juice or a smoothie during the day. Fasting should not be something that puts you at risk. A normal person can very safely fast, but if you have health problems, please be safe and wise about how you fast.

Shrove Tuesday, or Mardi Gras (“Fat Tuesday”), has become associated with excess–a last fling before the penitential season of Lent begins. In fact, the excesses of Shrove Tuesday reflect both practical and spiritual values that are important. In observant Jewish households, on the day before Passover begins the family cleans the house thoroughly and searches high and low for any leaven or any food that has leaven in it. This ritual cleansing is a preparation for redemption because redemption requires us to let go of the old life and embrace the new life which God offers us. Shrove Tuesday does exactly the same thing. There is a difference in that the Jewish custom is a preparation for the festival of Passover, whereas Shrove Tuesday is a preparation for a season of penitence, with the festival still many weeks away. Nevertheless, the Christian season of Lent is itself a season of new beginning, a time to embrace new life in a more extended way. And to do this properly, we must first of all set aside the old. We do that in several ways.

First of all, there is food. Pancake suppers, as well as Mardi Gras feasts of rich food and drink are an opportunity to use up the last of the winter supplies of these things, which in earlier times would have been running low by now anyway. Orthodox Christians are far more ascetical in Lent when it comes to food than we in the West. Meat, dairy products, fish, olive oil, and wine are given up for all or at least part of Lent in the Orthodox churches. In the West, meat has generally been the primary target of those who fast, with an emphasis on major fasts on two days (Ash Wednesday and Good Friday) and abstinence from meat on all Fridays. In fact, the tendency in the West has been to move further and further away from fixed rules and to emphasize the “spirit” of fasting and abstinence. Unfortunately, this has led many people either to trivialize the idea of fasting by translating it into the popular but often empty custom of “giving up” something or else to abandon the notion of fasting entirely. The challenge today is to recover a true spirit of fasting that is not necessarily based on hard and fast rules but that does make a genuine effort to set aside the old life in preparation for embracing redemption.

What one really needs to do in order to set aside the old life is something that rarely happens on Shrove Tuesday, in spite of the fact that it is the act from which the day gets its name. Ash Wednesday has become the day on which confession is emphasized liturgically. But historically it was on Shrove Tuesday that one was shriven (“absolved”) so that one could begin Lent with a completely clean slate. Sin is the thing to which we are enslaved and which is at the center of lives that desperately crave and need redemption. The practical way to address that problem is not by eating all of the pancakes one can manage. Rather, we need to make a thorough self-examination, firmly resolve to renounce entirely the sinful ways and attitudes that separate us from God and from one another, and, if possible, confess our sins to a priest and receive the sacramental absolution which relieves us of the burden of sin which weights us down and hinders our progress towards God’s redemption.

We live in a culture of introspection and self-improvement and heartily endorse the sentiment that “confession is good for the soul.” But we also place a high premium on independence and self-sufficiency, failing to realize that ultimately these things isolate us further from God and prevent us from taking hold of the new life that can only be received as a gift and can never be achieved by ourselves. The Mardi Gras custom of wearing masks and costumes which hide our true identity is, or should be, a preparation for the true meaning of the day, which is to strip off the masks we all wear–again, putting off the old life and opening ourselves to the new life of redemption.

I want to invite everyone to come to our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper (hosted by the men of the church, on Tuesday February 21st, from 6-8PM). But I also want to encourage everyone to seriously prepare their hearts for Lent. If that means sacramental confession, then contact me and we’ll make sure you get the help you need to grow in grace.

Three weeks prior to Ash Wednesday, on the day before Septuagesima Sunday, the ancient Church would chant a bittersweet hymn bidding farewell to the word “Alleluia”: “We do not now deserve to sing the Alleluia forever; Guilt forces us to dismiss you, O Alleluia.” Known as the Depositio of the Alleluia, this ceremony ushered in Septuagesima.

Septuagesima, is a name for a period of increasing discipline that begins roughly seventy days prior to Easter. This pre-Lenten season helps us make the transition from the joy of Epiphany to the penitence of Lent. Great Lent was seen as so important to ancient Christians that they actually had a separate season to prepare for it. Some clergy (and laity, especially monastics) would begin fasting fifty (Quinquagesima), sixty (Sexagesima), or even seventy (Septuagesima) days before Easter. This was a period of voluntary fasting that would grow more restrictive as it approached the fuller, obligatory Lenten fast (settled to forty days before Easter for the laity). They would eat less, and the consumption of certain “pleasure” items, such as butter, milk, eggs, and cheese, would gradually be abandoned.

Starting on the Thursday before Ash Wednesday, they would abstain from all meat. Thus the name for this seven-day period before Ash Wednesday is “Carnival,” from the Latin carne levarium, meaning “removal of meat.” Finally, within the week of Carnival, the last three days (prior to Lent) would be reserved for personal confession. This period, ending on Shrove Tuesday, is known as “Shrovetide” from the old English word “to shrive,” which means to have sins forgiven through absolution.

In today’s Church we do not formally observe the Gesima Sundays. We continue using the Gloria, but the Alleluia will die down in our music—a liturgical fast paralleling the physical one. A tone of sobriety will settle into our liturgy as we apply ourselves to seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We believe that He can show us where we need His help, healing, and restoration to fully celebrate the Resurrection life of Easter in Spirit and Truth.

May the season work in us God’s purpose to be fit clay for the Master’s Hand!

Cultural commentators tell us that images are making a come-back (TV, YouTube, etc.) as the power of the written word seems to diminish among the hoi polloi. While this is to be lamented, all is not lost. Again – the Church taught the faith this way for over a millenium.

Today, as I reflect on the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, I’m struck by what the iconography teaches about our spiritual warfare. Look at these pictures and tell me what you notice.

Seeing a common theme, yet?

Try noticing where the spear is placed.

Do you see it?

ALWAYS AT THE MOUTH.

(The same is true in the iconography of St. George, Patron protector of England, whose shield has been adopted as the symbol for the Anglican Church in North America.)
Why?

Because Satan’s greatest tool is deception!

Our spiritual warfare consists of being sanctified in the truth and casting down arguments that hold themselves up against the truth of Christ. It’s not easy – and in an age that appreciates the appearance of substance rather than substance itself – it can get you labeled as “mean” or “intolerant” or “narrow-minded.”

But remember that the highest messenger of God (literal translation of archangel) is so because he constantly destroys the lies of the devil, robbing him of power in the world.

Go and do likewise.

(Here’s some help.)

Holy Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

On the Feast of Michael and all Angels, popularly called Michaelmas, we give thanks for the many ways in which God’s loving care watches over us, both directly and indirectly, and we are reminded that the richness and variety of God’s creation far exceeds our knowledge of it.

The Holy Scriptures often speak of created intelligences other than humans who worship God in heaven and act as His messengers and agents on earth. We are not told much about them, and it is not clear how much of what we are told is figurative. Jesus speaks of them as rejoicing over penitent sinners (Lk 15:10). Elsewhere, in a statement that has been variously understood (Mt 18:10), He warns against misleading a child, because their angels behold the face of God. (Acts 12:15 may refer to a related idea.)

In the Hebrew Scriptures, it is occasionally reported that someone saw a man who spoke to him with authority, and who he then realized was no mere man, but a messenger of God. Thus we have a belief in super-human rational created beings, either resembling men in appearance or taking human appearance when they are to communicate with us. They are referred to as “messengers of God,” or simply as “messengers.” The word for a messenger in Hebrew is MALACH, in Greek, ANGELOS, from which we get our word “angel” [ Digression: ANGELION means "message, news" and EUANGELION means "good news = goodspell = gospel," from which we get our word "evangelist" used to mean a preacher of the Good News of salvation, and, more narrowly, one of the four Gospel-writers: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.]

By the time of Christ, Jewish popular belief included many specifics about angels, with names for many of them. There were thought to be four archangels, named Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. An alternative tradition has seven archangels (see Tobit 12:15 and 1 Enoch 20). Sometimes each archangel is associated with one of the seven planets of the Ptolemaic system (the moon, Mercury, Venus, the Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn). Michael is associated with Saturn and Uriel with the Sun. The other pairings I forget, but I believe that you will find a list in the long narrative poem called “The Golden Legend,” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. (I believe that a pairing is also offered in the opening chapters of the Proof of The Apostolic Preaching, by Irenaeus of Lyons, but I have not the work at hand.)

Michael (the name means “Who is like God?”) is said to be the captain of the heavenly armies. He is mentioned in the Scriptures in Daniel 10:13,31; 12:1 (where he is said to be the prince of the people of Israel); in Jude 9 (where he is said to have disputed with the devil about the body of Moses); and in Revelation 12:7 (where he is said to have led the heavenly armies against those of the great dragon). In iconography, he is generally pictured in full armor, carrying a lance, and with his foot on the neck of a dragon. Oftentimes, his lance pierces the mouth of the serpent, as this demonstrates the power of truth to conquer the Father of Lies. (Pictures of the Martyr George are often similar, but only Michael has wings.)

Gabriel (the name means “God is my champion”) is thought of as the special bearer of messages from God to men. He appears in Daniel 8:16; 9:21 as an explainer of some of Daniel’s visions. According to the first chapter of Luke, he announced the forthcoming births of John the Baptist and of our Lord to Zachariah and the Virgin Mary respectively.

Raphael (the name means “God heals”) is mentioned in the Apocrypha, in the book of Tobit, where, disguised as a man, he accompanies the young man Tobias on a quest, enables him to accomplish it, and gives him a remedy for the blindness of his aged father.

Uriel (the name means “God is my light” — compare with “Uriah”, which means “the LORD is my light”) is mentioned in 4 Esdras.

It is thought by many scholars that the seven lamps of Revelation 4:5 are an image suggested by (among many other things) the idea of seven archangels.

What is the value to us of remembering the Holy Angels? Well, since they appear to excel us in both knowledge and power, they remind us that, even among created things, we humans are not the top of the heap. Since it is the common belief that demons are angels who have chosen to disobey God and to be His enemies rather than His willing servants, they remind us that the higher we are the lower we can fall. The greater our natural gifts and talents, the greater the damage if we turn them to bad ends. The more we have been given, the more will be expected of us. And, in the picture of God sending His angels to help and defend us, we are reminded that apparently God, instead of doing good things directly, often prefers to do them through His willing servants, enabling those who have accepted His love to show their love for one another.

Image is under copyright, so here are the lyrics:

1 Through the darkness of the ages,
through the sorrows of the days,
strength of weary generations,
lifting hearts in hope and praise,
light in darkness, joy in sorrow,
presence to allay all fears,
Jesus, you have kept your promise,
faithful through two thousand years.

2 Bounty of two thousand harvests,
beauty of two thousand springs;
He who framed the times and seasons
has vouchsafed us greater things.
Word of God who spoke creation
speaks forgiveness, speaks to save,
gathers still his ransomed people
in the life he freely gave.

THE GOSPEL LESSON IS READ, and we resume singing:

3 Countless flowers have bloomed and withered,
countless noons are sealed in night,
shattered thrones and fallen empires,
realms and riches lost from sight.
Christ, your kingdom still increases
as the centuries unfold.
Grain that fell to earth and perished
has brought forth ten thousand-fold.

4 Master, we shall sing your praises,
man of sorrows, God of power,
for the measured march of seasons
shall at last bring in the hour
when, as lightning leaps the heavens,
you return to lead us home.
You have promised, “I am coming.”
Swiftly, our Lord Jesus, come.

1 Two thousand years since Bethlehem
first welcomed Jesus’ birth:
the startling truth began to dawn
that God had come to earth.
And as he grew and lived and taught
a different way unfurled:
a way of joy and love and peace,
a new start for the world!

2 Two thousand years since Galilee
where Jesus preached and healed;
in words of truth and works of power
God’s kingdom was revealed.
As young and old and rich and poor
responded to his call,
they found what we may find today:
a new start for us all!

3 Two thousand years since Calvary,
the hill where Jesus died;
the Lamb of God, the sinless one,
for me was crucified.
But soon he rose up from the grave
to reign in victory;
good news I scarcely can believe;
a new start won for me!

4 Two thousand years since Pentecost:
the Holy Spirit came
in sound of mighty, rushing wind
and tongues of living flame;
a gift to all who will believe
and live the Jesus way;
the power of God we may receive,
a new start from today!

5 Two thousand years of Christian faith
have changed our history,
for Jesus is the Lord of time
and of eternity.
For all who seek a better way,
than failure, sin and pain,
still Jesus Christ makes all things new:
a chance to start again!

1 “Go, my children, with my blessing, never alone.
Waking, sleeping, I am with you, you are my own.
In my love’s baptismal river,
I have made you mine forever.
Go, my children, with my blessing, you are my own.

2 Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.
Here you learned how much I love you, what I can cure.
Here you heard my dear Son’s story,
here you touched him, saw his glory.
Go, my children, sins forgiven, at peace and pure.

3 Go, my children, fed and nourished, closer to me.
Grow in love and love by serving, joyful and free.
Here my Spirit’s power filled you, here his tender comfort stilled you.
Go, my children, fed and nourished, joyful and free.

4 I, the Lord, will bless and keep you, and give you peace.
I, the Lord, will smile upon you, and give you peace.
I, the Lord, will be your Father, Savior, Comforter, and Brother.
Go, my children, I will keep you, and give you peace.”

Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving
To God the Creator triumphantly raise,
Who fashioned and made us, Protected and stayed us,
Who guides us and leads to the end of our days.
His banners are o’er us; His light goes before us,
A pillar of fire shining forth in the night,
Till shadows have vanished And darkness is banished,
As forward we travel from light into light.

His law he enforces; The stars in their courses
And sun in its orbit obediently shine.
The hills and the mountains, The rivers and fountains,
The deeps of the ocean proclaim him divine.
We, too, should be voicing Our love and rejoicing.
With glad adoration a song let us raise
Till all things now living Unite in thanksgiving:
“To God in the highest, hosanna and praise!”
