Many people are uncomfortable when visiting a family member or friend in a nursing home. This is especially true when the person has Alzheimer’s disease. Visitors may find the environment depressing or may not know how to interact with a person who is nonverbal. Nevertheless, such residents greatly appreciate the individual attention and change in routine. Learning techniques to make visits more enjoyable may help you to overcome these barriers and visit more often. Have you by chance heard of the alternative to Boynton Beach’s Senior Centers?
The first hurdle is to find a comfortable room or area to sit in during the visits. If the person is bedbound, then obviously there are few choices. In this case, bring stimulating objects such as flowers, picture books, balloons or an artificial aquarium that will change the environment. Play music, an instrument, sing or recite simple poetry or nursery rhymes. You do not need a special talent, only willingness and a smile.

The person you are visiting will appreciate being moved to a different setting such as a lounge, atrium or outdoor patio. There are often other residents and visitors in these common areas that may provide additional social stimulation for both you and the person you are visiting. Perhaps you can all sing or chat together. When my mother was in the later stages of Alzheimer’s disease, I found this very helpful and made friends who became my informal support group. She enjoyed the kind voices and smiles of these people who regularly greeted her when I wasn’t there and I returned the favor to their loved ones.

Visitors may choose to become involved with organized activities being offered by the facility, create their own activities or take the resident out into the community. When my mother was in the beginning stages of the disease, we did all three of these regularly. She enjoyed when I participated during her regular activities. But Mom especially loved outings such as getting a manicure, a movie or eating out. When it became too difficult to get my mother in and out of the car, I focused on bringing her to the nursing home patio. I have fond memories of the two of us sitting outside on a sunny day singing from the large print song book that I made. Music, looking at pictures and feeling interesting objects are always great activities to share with a nonverbal person, but remember they will appreciate simply hearing your voice.

Wars and depression, they survived it all. They were able to build their homes and create their neighborhood. They were able to develop businesses and create industries. They become the head of their households and their community leaders, up until now. In addition, during their spare time, they help others and give them assistance, instead of them asking for it. This is their mind set and their strength and they do not accept any help when it comes to their aging.
It is easier to find resources for the care of these generation members than these members to accept assistance from others. When you provide living facilities for seniors for your parents, it is the reverse of you raising your teenage kids. When you raise your teenage kids, you give them responsibilities that will help them become mature and able to grow. However, when it comes to your aging parents, you assume tasks which are minor at first. Through this, your parents can determine if you can do those tasks according to their standards. Also, they can determine that you will not take over their life.

You can first do minor things like you assist them with their phone calls, or do the ordering of their medications. You can also bring them food and be the one who tends the repair of the car and home. But remember that when you do these minor tasks, your parents are present so that they will not feel they are left behind. Also, help them remember events and activities whenever they are near to a calendar. It will help if you talk to them about the event before it occurs. When you help them during some activities and tasks will make their jobs easier and have a quality time with them. It’s better to start giving assistance few hours a week or few days a month, making you start slowly. And in the moment of illness and recovery of the illness, it’s the best time to offer help to them.

But it is better to have an aged care assisted living caregiver to assist with your aging parent. It lessens the concern of the family as well as the time that it demands for the family. Caregivers know how to assist patients like that. And you will just have to check on it very now and then.

Living in an old age home is not an easy decision to make, as most of the aging people would like to stay in their homes only to which they have a lot of association. In such cases we can retrofit the existing place to suit the special aged care requirements of the elderly people and still keeps their independence. A little bit of adjustments and arrangements will do the needful to ensure the safety and security of the aging person and to his caregiver as well.
Here are a few suggestions which can be made to aid the senior person live safely and comfortably:

Elder people generally have weak eyesight. Bright lighting in the house and outside would help them see clearly. You can add lighting or put brighter bulbs with advice from senior care professionals.

Bathroom is a place where no one can be accompanied. Hence when older people live in the house, bathrooms must have sufficient handles and bars for support. Safety must be provided with seniors around.

If you have stairs in your house, you must think of making a ramp too. Old people find it difficult to climb steps. A ramp will be helpful for people with wheelchairs and will provide smooth mobility. But you must see that it is not slippery.

A good ambiance must be provided for old people. To assist them to set up, trained senior care professionals can be called. They would help them do arrange set-up, cupboards, closets etc. Some simple adjustments with their wish can be made to satisfy them and keep them happy. Facilities must be taken care of so that people can also do some work themselves without causing harm. They must be given some independence.

If any renovation is to take place in your building, you must check with the comfort of the senior members and suggest reforms. If you are introducing some construction in your building, you must always check with the legal code. Legalizing your work is always necessary and gives you peace of mind. This may add to the cost but will provide the much needed safety.

To give your loved elder that perfect stay and a comfortable life, you can take help from health and home experts. These people are well-trained and have the right knowledge about these things. They will provide the senior just the perfect assisted living environment to live in. There are various retrofitting companies today which can be contacted. Before deciding on any renovation, you must always consult a professional.

When turning 50 years of age, many men and women fear having fatal heart disease. It’s understandable why that would be a cause of concern for people in this age group; being 50 years old or older is a major risk factor for heart disease. This concern motivates this age group to discover medically accepted methods of preventing or reducing the risk of heart disease. In this article, you will discover two proven methods for preventing heart disease.
Before looking at the two methods to help you prevent or reduce the risk of heart disease, I want to provide a few ideas to help you get the most out of these methods. First, be pro-active in your prevention and treatment efforts. Educate yourself as much as possible on diseases of the heart, the causes and available treatment. If there’s something you’ve read on WebMD or in an online medical journal that you don’t understand, write down your questions or concerns and ask your doctor. Speaking of your doctor, the next thing is to consider him or her as a member of your team. You want to reduce or eliminate the possibility of you having a heart attack or any heart disease.. Your doctor wants to help you accomplish this. The two of you must work together in order to meet this challenge head on.

While modern medicine has made outstanding progress in treating and preventing heart disease, two of the best measures in reducing the risk of heart disease are to alter patient’s attitudes toward diet and actually change the types of food eaten. Professional medical groups have found that a diet low in trans and/or saturated fat, as well a diet low in calories, is an excellent way to reduce your LDL cholesterol. LDL cholesterol, also known as “bad” cholesterol, is a major risk factor for heart disease. Therefore, when you reduce bad cholesterol, you reduce your risk for having a heart attack. However, while a change in diet is a very good start, it’s not enough. You must add a regular exercise or fitness regimen to your heart disease prevention plan.

In order to maximize the benefits of a low-fat, low-calorie diet, you need to get involved in a regular fitness or exercise program. A regular regimen of moderate physical exertion can reduce your risk of heart disease. How? A regular fitness or exercise program, consisting of at least 30 minutes, increases the flow of blood to your heart and strengthens the contractions of your heart so that it pumps more blood with less effort. Also, your new fitness program can also help you maintain your proper weight, which means your heart won’t have to work as hard. However, you should check with your doctor before you begin any exercise program. Combining a regular exercise program with a change in diet, as well as other lifestyle changes, provides you with a potent one two combination in your battle to prevent heart disease.

Keep in mind that while adopting a heart healthy diet and a regular moderate exercise program are two proven methods that can reduce your risk of fatal heart disease, you shouldn’t rely on them as your only weapons in your battle against heart disease. Some common sense measures you can take include eliminating alcohol and tobacco, reducing stress levels, lowering your blood pressure and losing weight. Depending on your situation, it may be necessary to take prescription drugs to help you prevent heart disease. The decision to begin any prescription drug therapy can only be made after consulting with your doctor and discussing the available options that are best for you.

With heart disease being one of the leading causes of death in the United States, preventing and reducing the risk of it should be on the minds of men and women in this country. Educate yourself and take action. Adopt a heart healthy diet that is low in bad fat, get 30 minutes of moderately vigorous exercise or physical activity and make common sense lifestyle changes to prevent heart disease.

Bedsores and diabetic ulcers are among the top two most common unrealized dangers a diabetic can have. If these are left untreated they can be life threatening. I hope this brings awareness to caregivers. Here are a few things you can do to prevent your patient from developing bedsores or diabetic ulcers on the legs.
1. Use the same routine when inspecting, and inspect often. Developing a routine will insure that you don’t miss an area. You want to check for any red areas on the skin that stay red and don’t fade away. This can be the beginning of a bedsore.

2. Never leave out the feet. Diabetics need to keep a good eye on their feet. Always check them and make sure you look in between the toes for any blisters. Also keep your eyes out for any cuts, scrapes, or scratches. Diabetics have a harder time healing so catching one of these right away is key!

3. Use pillows or foam wedges. Use these to keep legs from rubbing together or to prop up the heels so they are not touching the bed. It is recommended that you stay away from the egg crate kind of foam. Probably because it has bumps that may cause unnecessary irritation.

4. Keep as dry as possible. If the patient or family member you are caring for suffers from incontinence, make sure you keep them as dry as possible. Use a moisture blocking cream after each change and try to find the most absorbent undergarments.

5. Use moisturizers on the skin. After bathing with soap and water you will want to make sure you moisturize the skin. This will keep the skin from dying out.

6. Keep legs straight. Don’t cross your patient’s legs. This prevents proper blood flow. Without proper blood flow the patient could get more wounds. Wounds in diabetics are hard to heal so preventing this is important.

7. Change positions often. It is recommended that the patient or family member be moved around every fifteen minutes. This helps prevent bedsores from forming. Most bedsores occur because the patient sits in the same position for long periods of time.

8. Consult with a doctor. If your patient has a wound, or sore that will not heal seek medical advice. They have some great wound care centers just for diabetics. Finally, you will also want to seek medical attention if any wound looks like it might have become infected.

When parents reach a certain age, a tug of war can develop between them and their children, particularly if the kids deem that mom and dad are simply not in a position to look after themselves adequately. What happens here is that the parents will insist that they want to stay in their own home, while the children recommend that a move to an assisted living community is best. While the children would love to do all that they can to help, the reality is that work and family schedules makes it impossible, which is usually when the idea of a permanent move to a senior’s facility is brought up.

There is an alternative here that can very often strike a happy medium, and that is to have a private home health care professional look after the needs of the seniors when the children cannot. The most obvious benefits here are that the parents get to stay in the home where they have made a life, while the children can take care of the needs of their family without constantly worrying about how their parents are doing. There are more benefits from using an in-home caregiver than just these two, though.

When you have an older couple still living together and requiring care, you generally don’t have issues with companionship, but that can change when a person lives alone. It can be incredibly lonely to be at home all day with no-one to talk to, but that changes when a caregiver is added into the mix. Not only does the private home health care professional perform the duties required of them in and around the home, they can also serve as a friendly companion to someone who really needs it.

One of the reasons why assisted living facilities and hospice care are impossible for some are because of the costs associated with living at those types of facilities. The cost of a caregiver may be covered by Medicaid or insurance, and even if it isn’t, the caregiver may not be required on a full-time basis, and may in fact be called in on a semi-regular basis, making it easier to fit the help that is needed into most budgets. There are also volunteer caregivers available for light duties, although they are not a very good idea for those who need medical attention as well as work around the home.

Generally speaking, people feel much better about themselves and their situation of they are able to stay in the home that they love. As mentioned earlier, the biggest obstacle in getting people the help they need is convincing them that they need to be removed from their home in order for that care to be delivered. That argument is rendered moot when a private home health care professional is bought into the picture. The caregiver can be used sparingly, and asked to help out when other family members and friends cannot, which is a situation that puts everyone’s mind at ease.

Are you planning to hire an in home care? Since every situation is different, it’s a good idea to first list your problems to clarify what kind of in home care you would need. Consider the type, duration and schedule of home healthcare needed, and your financial resources.
With this information you can then decide whether you would like to hire help on your own or through a home healthcare agency.

Hiring home caregivers on your own:

• Ask others for home health care provider referrals or place an advertisement.

• Screen in home care candidates based upon their experience, basic duties, schedule, and other specifics.

• Ask lots of questions while interviewing screened candidates to provide home care services.

• Note your gut feeling regarding each caregiver. Your initial reaction and overall comfort level is a good indication of how well an in home care

provider could work out.

• Check references for any candidate thoroughly.

• Before hiring a home health care provider, sign a contract. This is vitally important and for the protection of everyone concerned.

Hiring through a home caregivers agency:

To locate an agency offering home healthcare, check with the hospital discharge planner, caregiver resource center or even the Yellow Pages.
• Consider the fees and services provided by the agency to determine how well they meet your needs and budgetary considerations.
• Find out how the agency screens their employees and what safety measures, such as background checks, are in place.
• Choose the agency that provides the services you need at a manageable price.
• Sign a contract so that everyone is clear on what expectations are to be met, what services are to be provided and what costs are entailed.

By following these steps, you will be better able to locate the best provider for your needs and obtain the desired level of service at a fair price.

As we age, there are many health complications that may arise and typically we try to avert these complications by making smart lifestyle choices. For many of us, as we age, the onset of fatigue is quite common and often we do not understand why or how we are suddenly feeling fatigue more than normal. If you have reached mid-life, and if you are concerned about your sudden onset of fatigue, this could be indicative of an early warning sign of the potential risk for geriatric anemia.
Geriatric anemia is simply a medical term used to describe the onset of fatigue later in life. Typically, this diagnosis of fatigue is not given to an adult until the age of 65 or later and when the complication is directly related to a poor red blood cell count. For adults under the age of 65, when anemia risks are beginning to develop, it is not uncommon to receive an early diagnosis of geriatric anemia especially if you are experiencing marked fatigue.

If your fatigue is quite severe, you can determine if anemia is a health risk fro you by simply visiting with your doctor and requesting routine blood work. Because the quality and quantity of red blood cells are a marker into your fatigue-associated anemia, your doctor will run these tests to confirm, or rule out, the presence of geriatric fatigue. While your age may not place you into a status as a geriatric patient, your doctor may confirm this diagnosis should other lifestyle or health complications exist that are considered to be age-related.

To alleviate the complications of early-onset geriatric fatigue and geriatric anemia, your doctor will most likely prescribe a course of supplemental iron tablets and recommend a change in diet to include foods that contain more iron. In addition, your doctor may also recommend that you engage in more regular exercise. If, however, your early-onset geriatric fatigue seems to be associated with other chronic aging conditions, then your doctor may need to treat these other conditions, such as cardiac disease or metabolism disorders, in order to reverse or slow the aging process.

While geriatric fatigue is common among older adults, it is becoming increasingly more common among middle aged adults and is typically diagnosed when chronic fatigue sets in. If you are suffering from chronic fatigue in middle age, be sure to ask your doctor to run the necessary tests to determine if you have early-onset geriatric fatigue and the potential risk for other geriatric health conditions early in life.

Looking into Home Sharing? Prepare Carefully
Home sharing is a wonderful way for anyone to remain in their home as they get older or informed. Rather than having an assisted living facility or a nursing home as a first option, how much better it is to have a way to stay in your own home until those options prove necessary. Staying at home is, of course, cheaper, but just as important, is the pleasure of being in familiar surroundings. And, chances are, those surroundings are filled with pleasant memories.

Finding someone to share your home with you takes some work. There are people out there who for a variety of reasons – loneliness, financial difficulties, a desire to help the disabled – want a place to stay where they won’t have a large outlay of money. Putting those people together with someone who wants to say in their own home can be a very beneficial match. But not doing the proper preparation can lead to an unworkable situation

Working with a HomeShare agent is your best bet. These people are dedicated to helping you find the right person. You can do the whole thing on your own, but their expertise is invaluable. Acting as your agent they can do a background check, guide you during interviews, and be the middleman if and when troubles arise. Not everyone is capable or willing to confront someone about possible problems, especially during that trial period before a home share agreement is finalized. And their cost is very reasonable, usually based on your income. It can be as low as $100.

There are some things you need to consider. First of all, you’re having someone, a stranger, living in your home. It’s not so much worrying about danger as it is about your readiness to share your lifelong home. A relative wandering around the house will seem perfectly natural, but an outsider may make you uncomfortable. Chances are, you’ll get over this fairly quickly with the right person, but you need to be sure you don’t mind this.

When getting ready to interview people there’s one more thing to keep in mind. Do not worry about losing the person. This may seem obvious, but it’s very easy, especially if you have a time constraint, to not want to turn them off by expecting too much of them. What you need to do is decide what your expectations are and simply present them. Discussions can lead to accommodations, but don’t be vague from the start. It’s a lot harder to ask someone to start doing the laundry after they’ve moved in. Clear expectations are the key to a happy arrangement.

The topics to cover can be extensive. Remember, you’re trying to get to know this person. How will they fit into your lifestyle? Just assuming the other person is getting a place to live for little money doesn’t mean they’ll accept everything you do or what you want done. You need to discuss, television viewing, guests, overnight guests, music volume, help if you’re infirmed, chores, free time, use of things in the house, food purchases, even things like values, privacy needs, and schedules.

Money can be an issue. Should the person staying in your home pay a stipend to you or would that be waived in return for certain chores. A person who isn’t ready for a nursing home but has trouble getting around may prefer housework to getting money. It’s possible the person staying with you will be expected to do more work than normal so you will need to discuss whether they should be paid. Settle this to everyone’s satisfaction. No one wants to feel they’re being taken advantage of. Being completely upfront on everything will make money matters easier.

Flexibility is paramount. Neither of you know each other. It takes time to build a bond, even a friendship. Annoying things will happen. They need to be discussed immediately. Don’t let them fester. Too many of these issues, even small ones, left untouched can create a poisoned outlook that will doom the whole deal.

Many of these things will be covered by a HomeShare agent, but coming to grips with them early will make the whole process run smoother. And let your family help you get through it. It’s a big step, but one that can turn into something extremely satisfying.

In-Law Suite Versus Nursing Home Care — Which is the Better Option?

Aging brings dependency which can be partial or full and in both cases the old one needs love and care. The two main options to meet the needs of the old loved one are either you build an in-law suite or buy the services of a nursing home facility. They both serve the purpose. But is building an in-law suite better than nursing home facility? They both have their merits.
A nursing home care can prove life saving if the old one needs special/skilled care like the 24-hour observation, strict medication compliance, monitoring through specialized medical equipments and urgent care possible only through a nursing facility.

Just ask yourself a simple question: Why does the old one needs to stay in a nursing home? The probable answers are:

1. Needs special/skilled care.

2. You are too busy to look after them.

3. The old one is totally dependent for everything.

4. You just don’t care.

Having said that if the above-mentioned factors are not applicable to you or your family which would mean:

1. The old one need no skilled or trained care/facility.

2. You have time (or you can workout some way). Someone or the other is around (mostly). The loved one is not totally dependent or handicapped.

3. You do love, care and respect your old one and want him/her to stay close to you. Then there is every reason for you to go ahead with the remodeling solution and plan for a nice and comfortable in-law suite for your loved one.

Why an in-law suite is better than a nursing home facility

1. With rising incidences of abuse, assault, and theft in nursing homes (though not everywhere), you feel safe, secure and contented with your loved one staying near you.

2. The old ones will have a sense of independence, with their privacy being cared for, and with the satisfaction that they own a place which is so close to their kids and grandkids that they don’t need to see unfamiliar faces often as in a nursing home facility.

3. It’s less expensive than a nursing home facility. If this is the case, you are adding value to your house rather than spending money the other way.

4. Remodel according to the needs of your old one, like wide doors, bars at the side of a staircase and handles at right places to assist in walking, blunt corners to avoid any injuries in case of a fall.

5. Every time you are out, you need not worry because there is someone who cares equally about your home as you.

Where there are old ones there is experience, blessings and wishes and you do need all when the going gets tough. And once for all, there is a saying in rural India – “Old one staying with you is an honor in itself.”
