Thekla Anna Katharina Lindemann Heuermann
5 April AD 1916 – 24 April AD 2008

On 5 April in the Year of Our Lord 1916, our Creator granted a daughter to Ernest and Clara (Meyer) Lindemann of Union City, Oklahama. On the 26th of that month, by the hand of Pastor Oskar Burkhardt, she received the washing of water and the Word in Holy Baptism through Immanuel Lutheran Church of Union City, becoming a child of God and receiving the name Thekla Anna Katharina. Her family moved to the Concordia area, becoming members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where she attended and graduated the parochial school. There, after instruction by Pastor Brust, she publicly confessed the Christian Faith on the 13th of April, 1930 in the rite of Confirmation and was admitted to her Lord’s altar to receive the life-giving gift of His body and blood. Thekla’s confirmation verse stands her well even in death, serving as the text of her funeral sermon.

She met Edwin J. Heuermann, a member of Holy Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, Emma, Missouri. They married on 20 March 1938 and she transferred her membership to Holy Cross. Each remained a member of Holy Cross until death.

Edwin and Thekla farmed for many years, finally moving into Concordia in 1973. God granted her many relatives and friends as she served the Lord in her vocation as wife, citizen, and Christian. However, sadness also touched her with the death of her only child, Nyla Kay, in 1952. She attended services at Holy Cross faithfully until her health became poor and remained active in worship at the Good Shepherd Home.

After leading her through several years of struggle with declining health, God blessed Thekla with a holy death, taking her home on 24 April in the Year of Our Lord 2008. Resting safe in the arms of Jesus, she awaits the resurrection of the dead and reunion with friends and family. These include her departed parents; husband; daughter; four brothers, Louis, Richard, Albert, and Theodore Lindemann; and one sister, Esther McDonald. They also number her surviving brother, Norvin Lindeman, of North Kansas City, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.

The Lord gives and the Lord takes away; blessed be the name of the Lord. We give thanks to God our Father through Jesus Christ, our Lord, for our sister Thekla.

2nd Annual Good Shepherd Home Golf Classic

The Lutheran Good Shepherd Home nurses are sponsoring the 2nd Annual Good Shepherd Home Golf Classic on May 2, 2008 at the Tri City Country Club in Emma. The rain date will be May 3, 2008. It is a four person scramble. A continental breakfast will be served at 7:30 a.m. There will be a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m. Lunch will be provided. For registration and further information, contact Sharon Brackman at the Lutheran Good Shepherd Home 660-463-2267. All proceeds go to the Nurses’s Fund for improvements.

Men’s Club Hosting LLL Rally

The Concordia Zone Lutheran Laymen’s League Spring Rally is scheduled for Sunday 13 April 2008 at Holy Cross. The banquet and rally begin at 6:30 p.m., following the 5:00 business meeting. Banquet tickets are $8.00 in advance and $8.50 at the door. The rally speaker is the Rev. Erik Rottmann. For tickets or information, contact David Schelp at 463-2836. In conjunction with the rally, Holy Cross also plans to celebrate Lutheran Hour Sunday that same day. Acting in the dual capacity as pastoral counselor and host minister, Pastor Snyder will provide opening and closing devotions or prayers for both business meeting and rally.

Pastor Rottmann has served Grace Lutheran Church of Versailles, Missouri, for seven years. Receiving a Master of Divinity from Concordia Theological Seminary in 1996, he remained at the seminary for a year of additional study in the Master of Sacred Theology program. After leaving the seminary in 1997, he was ordained into the pastoral office at Trinity Lutheran Church of Bluffs, IL, where he served for three years. Since 1999 Pr. Rottmann has been part of the writing, editing and teaching staff at Good News, a periodical devoted to teaching the Christian faith in a clear and simple way. In this capacity, he has traveled to several countries in the Caribbean and in Africa, teaching seminars for lay people, seminary students and pastors. His articles, sermons and essays have appeared in The Lutheran Witness, Concordia Theological Quarterly, Gottesdienst, Family Talk, The Issues Etc. Journal and Higher Things. He and his wife have three sons: Aaron Philip, Aidan Christian, and Adam Gene.

Dorcas

Dorcas has been working on tying and binding quilts in February and March. If you have been helping tie and bind quilts, could you bring them back to church and put them in the cry room? We will count them and on a Sunday in April. We will have them in church to dedicate them. They will be boxed and taken to Orphan Grain Train.

Laverne Deke reported that $58.59 had been collected in the Mite Boxes this quarter. This is sent in to the Concordia Zone to be used for mission projects.

Two ladies have asked to be released, Charlene Bredehoeft and Barb Adair.

April is a busy month for us. We are invited to the Spring LWML Rally in Ernestville. There will be an ingathering for Open Arms Crisis Pregnancy Center in Columbia. If you want to help, you may bring items to church and put them in the brown baskets under the coat racks. Items needed are newborn to 18 months diapers and new clothes, baby wipes, shampoo, and lotion.

Phyllis Stuerke will visit the sick and shut-ins in April.

Nancy Kueker will serve in April.

We meet the first Monday of the month in the school cafeteria. You are always welcome.

LGSH Communion

All are welcome to our monthly Communion service at Lutheran Good Shepherd Home. Pastor Snyder, Pastor Wing, and Pastor Mueller hold this joint service at ten o’clock a.m.on the first Thursday of each month — this time, 6 March. The service is especially for residents belonging to Holy Cross, Immanuel, Sweet Springs, and Zion, Corder, although residents from other congregations also attend with us. If you wish to commune with us, please tell Pastor ahead of time to make sure we have enough bread and wine.

If you have the time, this is a wonderful way both to receive your Lord’s body and blood and to encourage some of our older parishioners.

Ye Watchers and Ye Holy Ones

Several members of Holy Cross attended the home concert of the Saint Paul Lutheran High School Singing Saints on Sunday night 30 March. Members of the Holy Cross family singing in the choir were seniors Jennifer Niemeyer and Katy Roberts and sophomores Elizabeth Hemme and Laura Snyder. Other numbers included Abide with Me, which will be posted later. Holy Cross member William “Bill” Gasau is completing his fortieth year as choir director for St. Paul High School and its predecessor Saint Paul’s College and College High. The concert was held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Concordia, Missouri.

Special Book, Special Guest

Jane (Bredehoeft) Schroer, who recently completed the book Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery plans to be our guest on Sunday 30 March. She will bring samples in both color and black-and-white and will take orders at that time. Through her hard work and diligence over several years, every burial from the beginning of the cemetery through late 2006 is recorded, gravestones photographed, and the like. She also says that at that time, “I will have a check for the portion of the proceeds of the sale of each book that I am giving to the church for restoration and maintenance of the cemetery.”

Besides all the work she put in on cataloging the cemetery, Jane diligently worked in other areas of our old records. She tells us, “I have transcribed the marriage records and the baptismal records from the German to English. On the marriage records I also have an index alphabetically by Groom and one by Bride. On the baptismal records I have transcribed each as best as I could along with sponsors names. Now I am in the process of making an alphabetical listing of the baptisms. I am not publishing either of those. Those are just for the church. I will bring a copy of all of these to be left in the church office. Also I thought that perhaps on the congregation’s next major anniversary these lists would be available to you for publishing in an anniversary book.”

Finally, Jane took our burial information online. She uploaded photos and cataloged 812 interments for Holy Cross Lutheran Cemetery at Find A Grave.

Worker in Togo and Burkina Faso Receives Endowment Fund Gift

Holy Cross Congregation recently sent $500 from the Endowment Fund earnings to missionary James May and his family in Togo and Burkina Faso, Africa. There are also some pictures and information on this important work on the bulletin board in church. You can learn about other missionaries by browsing Synod’s list of missionary web pages. James’s address is listed below if you would like to send a card and best wishes for Easter.
