The group is a place where people suffering from addiction or their family members or both can come to share how addiction has impacted their lives, in a confidential setting. This is not counseling and is not a 12 step group meeting. The meeting is facilitated by Erik Vagenius, MHS, CAP Coordinator of the Diocese of Palm Beach Substance Addiction Ministry. If you or a family member or someone that you know is hurting because of addiction to a substance or compulsions that are not substance related such as compulsive shopping, overeating, problem gambling, and any other activity or behavior that has become the major focus of a their life during which they withdraw from other activities – then the SAM Support group is a place where for them to share with others that have similar issues.

The COUNCIL OF CATHOLIC WOMEN (CCW) is a group of active Catholic ladies who want to make a difference, helping others as well as fellow CCW members.

Santa’s Shopping is one of our most popular special events. Children can buy gifts for their families at very affordable prices. These items are new or gently used things donated by the CCW ladies and friends.

The Seder Meal held on Palm Sunday teaches us about the beliefs and heritage we share with our Jewish brothers and sisters.

Back to Basics distributes donated Christmas gifts of shoes, socks and underwear for underprivileged children.

Noreen McKeen Residence  - our fall visit brightens the spirits of members and residents alike, with an afternoon of food and song.

Bake Sales bring home-baked treats to parishioners tables and some income to our small coffers.

Take a Sister to Lunch offers a nice outing with some of our religious.

Spring Festival  - our booth selling various “treasures” is a good fund-raiser.

Fashion Show - a lovely and stylish afternoon out.

Burse Fund - helps support seminarians.

Water for Life - Donations are collected at each meeting. In conjunction with Catholic Relief Services, this enables small villages in Africa to provide clean, safe water for the people.

50/50 Monthly Raffle is held, too. Half the proceeds go to the winner, and half to the Diocesan Scholarship Fund, which goes toward a young woman’s tuition to a Catholic college.

Meeting programs are always informative and enlightening, dealing with subjects spiritual, secular, practical and beneficial. This year’s list is still being developed; watch the weekly bulletin for details. Leadership training is available through the Diocese and the CCW Central Deanery.

Our affiliate is part of the larger body:  “The National Council of Catholic Women acts through its affiliated organizations to support, empower and educate all Catholic women in spirituality, leadership and service.” To learn more about us, check out www.pbdccw@catholicweb.com and www.nccw.org.

CCW is completely self-supporting. No funds are taken from the parish. We’re very pleased and very blessed that during the 2010-2011 season, through the efforts of our members, the following community ministries benefited from our fundraising efforts:  Water for Life (Catholic Relief Services), Needy Families at the Holidays, Dominican Associates, Vita Nova, Birthline Pregnancy Centers, Faith, Hope, Love Charities, and the PBDCCW Raffle Fashion Show, Scholarship Fund, and Take a Sister to Lunch. These Holy Name of Jesus ministries were recipients as well: Children’s Choir, Festival, Trinity Center Chairs project, Youth Ministry, Simon Ministry, School Scholarship, and Religious Education.

Preparing Our Hearts for Christmas

At this time of year we receive a variety of holiday invitations.  Traditional ones come from friends asking us to join them in celebration.  Non-traditional invitations come from both society and religion:

·                    Society invites us to prepare our homes for the holiday. 

·                    Advent invites us to prepare our hearts for Christmas.

We know how to prepare our homes.  But just how do we prepare our hearts???

We do it one trying situation at a time.  Every time we feel ‘pushed’ we are given an opportunity to change and prepare our heart by sharing love instead of frustration.  

Sometimes a visual aid helps: When we are stressed and in a foul frame of mind, that’s when it helps to visualize lighting a candle of love in our hearts.

Candles represent light. When a candle of love is in our heart we feel at peace, which makes it easier to share love.  Sharing love is one way to prepare our heart for Christmas.

As we go about our lives it’s easy for our candle of love to either blow out or completely burn out.  Someone may cut us off in traffic.  Someone may take ‘our’ parking space.  Someone may cut in line at the department store.  They may utter an unkind word.  They may make unreasonable demands.  Every day, all day long, life presents us with situations that can cause our candle of love to burn out.  Darkness results.

P.E.A.C.E. is a congregation-based community organization charged with the mission of effectively fighting injustices in the communities of Palm Beach County. Through the power of large numbers of organized people, our members identify problems of mutual concern, research solutions to those problems, and hold public officials accountable to implementing these solutions.

We are an affiliate of DART (Direct Action & Research Training Center), a network of twenty-two organizations just like ours located throughout the country.

The bishops have told us that now is the time for us to begin studying and learning the new text.  When these changes take effect it will be awkward to change responses we have made for many years that, over time, have become automatic.  Soon we will have to think about what we are saying at Mass.  The translation will also bring about a change in the language of the Mass.  The Vatican has asked that vernacular translations mare closely resemble the original Latin text.  We will notice more complex wording and longer phrases as the translators have worked to emancipate the rich meaning and antiquity of the prayers of the Roman Rite. The language we will use at Mass will sound less like street English and more like one addressing a king in a royal court.  We must remember the Mass makes us present on Calvary as the King of Kings was glorified by submitting His will to His Father in the Perfect Sacrifice: an example which we are called to imitate by submitting ourselves as a living sacrifice to Father.

The Church exists to share Christ with the world, and that fact is, Christ had a lot to say about money. There are hundreds of references to money in the Bible. Jesus used money and possessions as themes in half of His parables. Why did He speak of money so often? Because He knows that money and possessions have a way of interfering with our relationship with Him.
