Freddie Mac Lists Average Mortgage Rate at 3.94%

According to a report on the Freddie Mac website December 15, 2011 the average rate for a 30 year mortgage is currently 3.94%. This low rate will hopefully lead to more mortgage approvals and home sales to help bolster our still battered economy.

There are other considerations to buying a home besides the mortgage rate though, especially for someone buying a second home for use during the vacation season. South Fork Place Names, Sag Harbor

I picked up this nice little Book called “South Fork Place Names” written by the late William Mulvihill of Sag Harbor. It is a very interesting book describing how and why Hamptons places and streets were named. I will be sharing some of there facts with you from time to time. The first entry is Sag Harbor. ..Early English settlers on the south fork discovered that a mainstay of the Indian diet was a tuber that grew in abundance in low swampy areas. This tuber had many names including Bog Potato. The original pilgrims ate them during their first precarious New England winter, and botanist consider them to be one of the most important wild foods. If it had not been for the potato, the bog potato would have been the first tuber to be cultivated. the indians called the plant “sagga”, and the word founds its way into Saggabon, Saggaponak, and Sagg. The harbor of Sagg evolved into Sag Harbor.

Winding Down the Year in the Hamptons

The year of 2011 will be soon gone and there are still many reasons to ease into next year by having a getaway to the East Coast’s most luxurious resort haven. The relaxation offered by this vacation spot will of course include seasonal treats. The Westhampton beach performing arts center will be offering two ballet performances of The Nutcracker Suite that is perfect entertainment for the whole family.
