What MLM is and is not.

The term MLM is used interchangeably; Multilevel Marketing - MLM, Network Marketing. Person to Person Marketing, Referral Marketing and soon Social Media Networking. Network Marketing/MLM is considered a part of the Direct Selling Industry. The term Direct Selling relates to the method of distribution, direct from the producer to the consumer. Network Marketing refers to the method of compensation. Compensation is based not only on a persons own sales but on the sales of their “downline” those people who they sponsored into the business.

Network Marketing (MLM) provides all the advantages of the original franchise concept without the heavy initial investment and employees required of a typical franchise. A Network Marketing company will create a product, do all the administrative record keeping, manufacturing, warehousing, shipping and customer service while the independent distributor only pays a fee to join, usually less than joining Costco, and spends their energy building a wholesale business and an organization of business builders.

A misconception that many seem to have is that Network Marketing is more like a chain letter than a business. Network Marketing, like any business, requires an investment in time and money to make it work. Just like any business you have to select the right product that is priced to sell and sell it.

I believe that the reason social networking incorporating Web 2.0 tools has not worked well for the MLM industry is because women in the age group of 34 – 64 make up the majority of the independent distributors. And in Web 2.0 social networking communities that group makes up less than 10% of those involved. Basically the women who will make it work are not there. Why? Because they are busy raising a family, taking care of the home, working a second job or being a single parent and doing everything. They social network but have not found the time to learn how to integrate Web 2.0 tools to let themselves have a better life. But they will and I want to help. Let me help you.

People are fixating on the chart I provided on my website. Let's put the $200 a month purchases that a Business Builder is making in perspective. The company I selected currently has 3 product lines; functional health beverage, supplements and skincare. All unique, effective and priced appropriately. My minimum monthly usage is:
Functional Health Beverage $ 125.00
Supplements $ 70.00
Skincare $ 75.00
Total $ 270.00
Now you figure what you spend on your health and beauty needs a month. I was born in 1939, feel like I'm in my 40's and look like I'm in my 50's. How do you feel?

Don't fixate on the chart look at you social network and see if you have 6 potential Business Builders and go for it.

You, Web 2.0 and your Home Based Business

I've been getting some interesting feedback on the Guarantee and Potential Income Chart I included on my Website http://homebasedbusinessnetworking.com . The comments are in effect “This stuff is just a bunch of MLM hype” or something close to that.

I've been bouncing around the WWW (Google Groups, Yahoo Groups, Linkedin, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, RYZE, Friendster, Plaxo, Sguido, and a bunch of independent blogs) joining groups, chatting, looking and listening. It's time consuming, educational and a little frustrating. It has shown me that if social networking is going to transition to a business model for the people who make up the network we can't restrict ourselves to article marketing and affiliate marketing programs.

The Internet is big business for the platform providers. What about you, the platform user, the backbone of the business, is it big business for you? I know it provides the opportunity to do a lot of stuff but is it giving you a platform to build a home based business to give you personal and financial freedom? It can! I believe home based businesses using Web 2.0 technology will open up so many more opportunities for you that you can't afford not to take a look with an open mind.

That's why I put up the chart, to give you the opportunity to do the math yourself. If you have a social network that will support you and itself, you win. Another common comment is that people who become involved with a Network Marketing (MLM) company drop out and you keep having to recruit people to take their place. The company I selected for us has a 6 year history that indicates that is not the case. In their experience, once a person makes a commitment to the company and products, 80% stay with the company for at least 2 years.

I provided the guarantee to give you the comfort to move forward. The company I selected for us is pretty much recession proof. The products it provides, people are going to continue to buy, recession or not.

I went to the website and read the guarantee. Why are you offering the guarantee?

The reason for the guarantee is to give you comfort to bring your Web 2.0 Social Network Business Builders to the table.

A traditional company produces a consumable product that they want you to purchase over and over. They spend about 50% of the retail price advertising and promoting that product. They hire the best writers, to produce the best ads, to convince you to buy their product.

The Direct Selling Network Marketing company that I selected has created a product that they feel is great. They decided to advertise and promote the product by giving 50% of the retail price of the product to people who consume, wholesale and spread the word about the product to their Social Network (family, friends, associates). People would rather purchase a product from people they know and trust. Friends telling you they had the best steak of their lives at a particular restaurant is far more compelling than a 30 second commercial showing a steak being thrown on a grill. Your Social Network will not mislead you about a product or business they feel will benefit you.

Neither will I. I know the products produced by the company I have selected are great, I use them. Join me.

My partner and I are passionate about Home Based Business, particularly Network Marketing Home Based Business. We have owned traditional businesses where at the end of the day you have paid everyone except yourself. We discovered that good Network Marketing Companies give us the opportunity to make a handsome living without the front end capital costs and oppressive administrative drain of a traditional small business.
