Expect Abundance

I was sent the following information and felt that it was very applicable to every person trying to build their own business:

We estimated our expected tithe. It was unusual, but we estimated the amount of income we wanted for the next year. Then, starting in January, we tithed on that amount monthly. (We estimated the income, divided it by twelve, and tithed that mount). Guess what? At the end of the year that amount of our business profit was exactly what we had estimated.

The next year we increased our estimated income, and we tithed on that increased amount each month. That year, the same thing happened; we made that income. The third year, we increased the estimate again. But something went wrong. We blew a fuse! We made far more profit than the estimated amount.

God surprised us. He is wonderfully exciting. Over the years, He has surprised us again and again.

We are saved by faith. We are healed by faith. We get answers to prayers by faith. Our finances are blessed because of faith. God blesses our homes and families because of our faith.

As my friend, the late Dr. Edwin Cole, once said, “Faith never limits God, and God never limits faith.”

Do not allow low expectations. Lack of expectancy is evidence of little faith. Faithlessness is irreverent. The element of expectancy is the basic DNA of faith. Things seen are temporary and subject to change.

“So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” II Cor. 4:18

Faith is not "trying" to believe; faith never "tries". Faith speaks. Faith commands. Faith expects. Faith receives. Faith refuses to compromise. Faith praises. Faith does not waver. Faith wins!

Mentoring

Please do not underestimate the importance that mentoring plays in success. All successful people have someone in their life that has or does play a vital role in leading them or counseling them in their efforts. I know of no one who is able to go their own way, with no assistance, and achieve great success.

Most of the lessons of life come from mistakes, and some involve a degree of pain. It is a mentor who gives us the chance to learn from the mistakes and pain of another. It is a mentor that helps us to be properly organized, well prepared and able to handle the challenges that will arise before us.

Many home based business opportunities will stress that they provide training and mentoring. In most of these cases, all you learn is to follow the example of the person who has become successful. If this involves using personal contacts to build your business, and you do not have that type of contact, their mentoring is of little use.

Try to identify a person or company that can provide the type of individual mentoring that you need or desire. Using a cookie cutter approach to training and mentoring will only work in a few cases. A tailored approach offers the best chance for successful results and a profitable relationship.

If you want to go it alone, I wish you luck, but I do not expect to hear of great success. You may be one of the rare individuals who has come up with something unique and universally needed, but without a mentor, you may find that you will make a fatal mistake along the path to capitalizing on your idea. Integrity

Whenever you need to purchase a product or service, who do you look to? The obvious choice is a person or company that has a reputation for honesty and dependability. Your good name is worth more than you might imagine, because if you look to someone you feel you can depend on, it is likely that other people will do the same.

That is the importance of integrity. When you treat others in an honest and forthright manner, when you demonstrate to them that they can depend on you, you are establishing your good name and laying the foundation for all future transactions.

Remember, the best advertising, or worst, is word of mouth. If you are always acting with integrity, your customers will not hesitate to recommend you to others. Likewise, if you are lacking in integrity, your customers will not hesitate to inform others of that problem and recommend that they deal with someone else.

Integrity is an asset on which you cannot place a dollar value, but one that will increase your revenues and customer satisfaction tremendously. The lack of integrity can be seen in the difficulty you will have in keeping customers, and in gaining new ones.

Telephone Etiquette

How many times have you been on a telephone conference and heard pots and pans, screaming children or background conversations that are not a part of the call? To be a professional, one must be aware of the need to be muted on any conference call. Some people state that they always put themselves in a quiet place where background noise will not occur.

How many times has something unexpected occurred in your life? You may be in a quiet place, but something may happen to cause noise. Someone could enter the room suddenly, children have a habit of doing this, a dog might start barking or you might accidentally knock something over. The point is that you can never totally ensure that nothing will happen to distract the call.

The only sure solution is to mute your phone. My phone, fortunately, has a mute button. Some phones do not, but most conferencing services offer the ability to mute using a key or combination of keys. If you want to participate in the discussion later, you simply take yourself off of mute using the same key or keys. It is a simple process and allows you to be considerate of all the others on the call.

A true professional should always endeavor to act in a manner that is considerate and that will enhance meetings rather than detract from them. A true professional will automatically mute their phone without being asked to do so. When everyone tries to be thoughtful of the others on the call, we all are able to gain more from the call.

So the next time you dial in to a conference call, announce yourself, if that is part of the process, and them mute your phone so that you do not accidentally cause a distraction on the call. Save yourself the embarrassment of being the source of background noise.

Continuing Education

One of the greatest threats to long-term success in business is overconfidence. When we begin to believe that we know all there is to know and feel comfortable in our situation, we begin to stagnate and lose our forward momentum. It is important to understand that there is always something new to learn and there are better ways to do what we do.

This problem can be avoided by seeking continuing education in its many forms. There are books, films, CDs and seminars that make it easy to advance our knowledge base. I recently attended a conference in Dallas that was inspiring and educational both from business and spiritual perspectives. After returning home I felt both rejuvenated and even more greatly motivated to succeed.

This was the Mindset Mentoring Conference sponsored by Advantage Conferences. It was so inspiring listening to successful business people talk about how they built their success, what problems they encountered on the way and also how important their faith in God has been to their success.

I was able to meet these people and talk with them. I think that many people view millionaires as being aloof and unapproachable snobs. These people, however, were humble, warm, friendly and very willing to help others to succeed. They also set a wonderful precedent through their donations to charities and ministries.

I plan to attend future conferences and to seek help to find better ways to operate my business. With the right mentors, there is no limit to the success you can achieve, or to the blessings that you can provide to others.

Networking

If you want to build up a home based business, you should develop better skills at networking with other like-minded people. This can be done on a face to face basis or through one of the many networking sites available on the internet. Either way, the goal is to establish new relationships and to exchange information.

Some people take the approach that they will use their networking efforts solely to advertize their business. This can be counterproductive. Nothing will turn people off more quickly than having someone reply to their attempt to communicate with an ad. Break the ice. Get to know people first. You may not make a sale with each person you meet, but if you cultivate a good relationship, you may make a sale to someone else that they know and recommend.

The number of people that you meet will increase the opportunity to spread the word about your business, and improve your chance to get your message to someone who is receptive to it. You will gain nothing by alienating people and making them deaf to your message.

This is where the Golden Rule really comes into play. If you are turned off by someone who only wants to plug their own business, then other people are likely to feel the same way. If you want to do business with other people, try to be the kind of person with which you would like to do business. Remember, there are many places on the net to network and advertize for free, or at least a small cost.

Advertising

Advertising is the life blood of any company. It brings in the income opportunities that fuel additional business development. Advertising can be done in many forms. People purchase internet ad space, pass out fliers, buy newspaper and magazine ads and also use word of mouth advertising, my personal favorite.

Whichever form of advertising you choose, be sure to apply ethical standards to your efforts. If you dislike finding fliers left on your door and car, like I do, then do not advertise in this fashion. I also advise against spamming. I do not like to have unsolicited ads streaming into my email and take every option to block them. Naturally, I avoid using advertising options that send out spam.

I prefer word of mouth advertising the best, although you cannot survive on this alone. We all tend to trust the opinions of our friends and family and so their testimonials on our behalf will carry a greater weight. Be careful not to badger family and friends. I have shared my businesses with them but have not demanded that they buy from me or take on the opportunity that I am sharing.

If you believe in the business you are building, you will naturally want to share this with people you are concerned about, but do not become a pest. Show your enthusiasm, but allow them the right to decide for themselves. Show them the same respect that you prefer to receive.

The Golden Rule is applicable in so many aspects of business and advertising is no exception. If you do not appreciate a certain form of advertising, do not use it yourself in an attempt to build your business. If you can treat your customers and prospects like you prefer to be treated, you will be building a business of which you can be proud.

Professionalism

One thing that is important to remember when operating a home based business is that it is a business. Acting in a professional manner is important in managing a quality and prosperous business.

I know people who have dressed impeccably. Their suit is conservative and their shirts are laundered and pressed. They look like they should be first class professionals. Then they open their mouths and you realize that the outside appearance is merely a façade.

I have also known people whose appearance is not particularly noteworthy, but their actions and words define them as extreme professionals. They are always respectful, and they demonstrate knowledge and confidence without being arrogant.

A professional always tries to be organized, well-informed and well-prepared. They seek to be a means of support for others, not a liability. A professional will speak carefully to ensure that they do not end up appearing hypocritical. Say what you mean and mean what you say.

A professional should always strive to serve their customer. They should be forthcoming with advice and helpful information. They should eagerly help their associates and attempt to be leaders on the job. They always show up promptly for meetings and try to be considerate of other people.%

Being an entrepreneur is not a smooth and easy way to achieve a better standard of life. Challenges arise each day that can impact your ability to operate your business in a consistent manner. Do not let a small difficulty cause you to give up on your dream.

I have not posted an item for several weeks because of such challenges. My laptop computer developed an error while I was travelling and then I had the challenge of trying to recover my business information and rebuild my address book.

It has been a difficult time; especially since I also had to prepare and file my taxes during this time. I did experience frustration and some anger, but I reminded myself that you never succeed if you choose to quit. Things will not always go our way and we need to be determined to tackle any challenges and to find a way to overcome them.

If you really want to succeed as an entrepreneur, you must be ready for challenges and problems and you must find a way to overcome them. If you do not have that kind of will power, look to find a source of inspiration and help. There are many motivational speakers who make a great living by telling people how to tap into their inner resources.

I also have found my faith in God to be a wonderful source of inspiration and determination. I believe that with God, all things are possible. If I believe that God is on my side, and I do, then I have no reason to fear failure. I just need to keep working and to apply the gifts that He has given to me.

Remember, challenges and problems will arise. They are unavoidable. If you want to be a success, you must find a way to overcome problems and never quit trying to achieve your dream.

How is your job security?

How do you feel about your job security these days? More and more, employers are sending jobs overseas where the labor is less expensive. It is impossible for anyone to feel secure in their job in the current economy, but what can be done about it?

The best thing that I know of is to look at building your own home business. I have seen some excellent people laid off, even some computer programmers. I do not know of any job or industry that is safe. And if the axe should fall, what are your chances of finding something else?

When it happened to me, I spent months trying to find another job. I did not even have luck getting interviews, much less job offers. I finally decided to try my hand at working for myself and have never looked back. Oh sure, there is some uncertainty involved, and it does take time to build your business into a profitable concern, but I feel less stress and greater peace.

Maybe I am one of those control freaks who wants to see everything done their way, but at least I know that I can please my boss and have an employee that I can depend on, because they both happen to be me.

I think that it is very important to understand why you have decided to run your own business. Sure, all of us want to make enough money to live comfortably, but what else is driving you?

If all you care about is the money, then you do not need to be reading my blog. I think that there are higher priorities than the money. Having more control over your life, time freedom, the ability to be there for your spouse and children and providing aid to someone in need are much better reasons for having your own business.

How much money we make is not a measure of the kind of person we are or how successful we have truly become. It may impress some people and allow some to buy big houses, fancy cars or yachts, but what does that truly accomplish.

How many times have you read about a famous or rich person who ended up committing suicide because they were not happy? Money can buy things and temporary happiness, but it cannot provide us with true fulfillment or satisfaction. We gain those by taking the money we make and putting it to good uses.

I do not suggest that having a nice home and car or putting food on your family table is bad, but anything when carried to excess can become bad. Once you have taken care of your family and set money aside for your future needs, why not look to see how you can be a blessing to others. This is a very simple thing that helps you to feel a great deal of satisfaction.

And you can use some of that extra time to work on service projects that help others also. Charity is not just the money that we contribute; it is also the time that we contribute. Join the service organization of your choice. Take an active role in their good works and see how great you feel afterward.

Set Your Own Priorities

One of the biggest benefits of running your own business is the freedom to set your own priorities. You no longer have to listen to a boss tell you what to do and when to do it. You may, however, have to adjust your priorities based on the needs of your customers.

Each day I rise and check my email. I no longer worry about the weather forecast; I just walk to my desk. I have my list of appointments and make sure to keep them. Today I wanted to write an item for my blog. Tomorrow I will be writing an assignment for the writing class I am taking.

I choose to check my email throughout the day so that I can respond as quickly as possible to any customer. If I need to take time for personal errands I do so. I will work whenever I choose to and take personal time whenever I need to. If I want to take a trip, I do. By taking my laptop with me I can work from anywhere.

The feeling of freedom is wonderful. At the end of the day I feel more satisfaction because I have made sure to complete the priorities that I set. Most of my stress is gone and I see life as an opportunity, not just another day between me and the weekend.

Business, as well as life, has many obstacles. Just when you think that you have everything running smoothly, a problem pops up to disrupt things. Success in business, as in life, depends on your ability to adapt and to overcome problems and obstacles.

Improve your communication skills

Some people ask how anyone can claim to be a Christian and still seek to make money? There is an easy answer to that question. The goal should not be to accumulate a huge amount of money. The goal is to properly use the money with which God blesses us to bless those around us.

Look at all the need that exists is our society today. There are many homeless with no place to stay and nothing to eat. There are orphans who have lost their parents and need assistance. And, sadly, there are many widows and children who are left to struggle because the deceased spouse was not able to provide for their needs after death.

In addition, there are numerous wonderful charities that are seeking the cures to the most deadly diseases afflicting us today. All of them are looking for help and support. Greed is when you seek to accumulate wealth for yourself and your own purposes. God provides excess for us when we prove that we understand His call for us to help those around us who are in need. No More External Stress!

One of our major problems today is stress. I know from my own experience how harmful it can be to your health. In my former job, I was subjected to a great deal of stress; most of it came from a supervisor. I was on medication for high blood pressure and faced even more stress from worrying about my health. I began to change my diet to reduce my sodium intake, but I knew that more was needed.

I was on medication for 7 or 8 years and had resigned myself to taking pills for the rest of my life. I do not believe in better living through chemicals, but sometimes it is the only way to continue living at all. Then, my world was turned upside down when I was the victim of a reduction in force. Control Your Life

One thing that I have noticed is that someone is always controlling your life. It may be your boss, your spouse, your kids or someone else. This is often the cause of frustration or unhappiness. We tend to feel like puppets with someone else controlling the strings.

How do you cut those strings and gain control? One way is to have your own business so that you call the shots, make the plans and set the priorities. This will eliminate the boss as a controller. Once you gain that level of control, you will find that you now exert more influence over the other areas of your life.

Another side benefit is that you become more tolerant of the other demands on your life because of the external stress that has been eliminated. You will have the time to spend on the activities and priorities in your life that YOU want to be doing. You will not have to be responding to someone else pulling on your leash.

Spend time with your spouse, be more involved with your kids or indulge yourself in your favorite hobby. It will not happen immediately, of course. You will have to invest some effort to build your business at the start, but you will be able, eventually, to make your own decisions and decide how you will spend the days of your life.

Time Freedom

One of the problems facing most people today is a lack of time. There is never enough time to take get the work done, do the chores around the house or spend time with the kids and take them to their activities.

How can that problem be resolved? One way to gain control over your time and your life is with a successful home-based business. Admittedly, there is not a lot of freedom while first establishing and building your business, but once you are established, you will have the time to do the things that are important to you.

What could you do? That depends on what your interests are. Attend field trips with your children, play more golf, travel or whatever else appeals to you in your life. Many people are eventually chucking their day jobs for the freedom that comes from being their own boss.

I have also found a reduction in stress. I used to be on medication for high blood pressure, but now I no longer need it. There is still some stress, but it is of a different nature and does not seem to impact my health. I am more at peace with myself and the world around me.

If you want to gain more control over your life and time, I recommend looking at the possibility of becoming a home-based entrepreneur. Risks are involved, but the rewards are absolutely wonderful. I now have a boss I like -- me!
