The absolute key to the success of any home business idea is its ability to make you money. Doing something you like to do as a home business opportunity is great fun however it needs to make you money.

As an entrepreneur you are always coming up with great ideas. Entrepreneurs are great idea people and wonderful at strategizing. But the idea of any home business is of course to make money. So ask yourself, within 10 minutes of coming up with a new idea, how will I monetize this? If you can not think of a reasonable, obvious way of monetize that idea, you need to abandon that idea and going on to something else. There will always be another idea... Don't fall in love with an idea that months down the road have drained your pocket book and your enthusiasm.

Basically there are three ways to make money online

1. Sell something you've created

This can be broken down into two groups, information and products. Information is things such as e-books, videos, audios, membership sites, coaching programs, and teleseminars. If you have never done any of this before you should, this is an amazing opportunity. Your costs are minimal or nothing and profit margins are huge.

Product or services are something physical. A product is something that would be sold by means of an online store, and services are something you provide like babysitting, painting or article writing. This is a great method for long term profitability.

2. Sell someone else's stuff

There are many ways to sell other peoples stuff. Creating an online line store to sell like products is one. This option comes in several forms, dropship, warehouse or a combination. Dropship has a lower profit margin to cover the cost of someone else handling the shipping for you. The warehouse model cost you less to ship however you must inventory the product. Or do a combination, warehouse high volume pieces and dropship less requested product. Amazon did this for years.

Affiliate programs are another way to sell some else's product. They handle all the product distribution you generate the sale and receive a profit for your efforts.

Joint ventures are a hot topic these days. This is always a way for someone new to the home based business without a list. You approach someone with a buying list and strike a deal to sell your product to their list for a share of the profits. That can look like a 50-50 split or 70-30; make your best win-win deal.

3. Sell advertising

This can be in the form of Google Adsense or selling advertising on your site. There are many online businesses that make all their money by putting up a site, get it ranked high in the search engines and then sell advertising to others.

All that said, don't limit yourself to just one of these techniques. It's a good idea to have a mixed portfolio to minimize your risk and increase profits. Mixing up the products means to mix up the industries as well; network marking, health and wellness, information products etc. Generally if one area is not working the other one will be producing for you, keeping your profits balanced.

Have you ever thought of leaving the rat race before becoming a rat? I worked in Corporate America many years and I don't believe that everyone becomes a rat as I worked with many good people. Many of those good people are still there; some people are just more suited as followers and working for someone else. I am not. What are you suited to do? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to leave your job and do your own thing? To follow your passion? Do you even have a passion?

In the beginning of my journey I just wanted "out" and to be an "entreprenour". Many can relate to that but may not know where to start. When I started, my corporate job gave me plenty of disposable income to invest. I decided to open a boutique as I enjoyed clothes and it sounded like lots of fun. Location, location, location is what is important in retail. My location was great at first but then construction started and my once great location became a graveyard for small businesses. Next, I heard that leveraging other people's work was a good thing and so I had this bright idea to open a day spa with a partner. We had several contractors working in our spa and we collected a percentage of what they made. We managed, they worked and we got paid. Not a bad deal. Long story short...good idea, wrong partner. What I learned from my experience was so valuable as I learned how to run a business and I seen first hand the advantages and disadvantages small business owners face. I also learned that my dream and passion wasn't in a boutique or a day spa.

Remember when I asked if you have a passion? I asked that because so many people don't know what they really want to do. Jack Canfield says the way to know what you want is to first ask yourself what you don't want. After my first two experiences, I found out that I don't want to tie up large sums of money in retail, I don't like overhead or employees, I don't want a partners and I don't want to spend time away from my son. That was a good start. With my list I was able to list some criteria for my "final" push toward an entreprenourial lifestyle. Leverage the work of others without overhead or employees and have more time with my son all while getting to have fun working and helping people. Take a minute and think about what you have experienced that you "don't want" and then turn it into what you do want. Gain some clarity. This is a start and know that as you evolve, your list will change. This is the first and most crucial step. If you don't start with what you want, how will you know when you've received it?

Now that you know what you want, go get it. Figure out the shortest path between where you are and where you want to be. For me it was Network Marketing. It isn't for everyone but I came in to the field treating it like a business. I positioned myself to attract people who wanted what I had to offer... so I helped them and a successful business was born. After 10 months, I left the job and have not looked back since then. It did take work and focus. Anyone that tells you it's easy should probably go to corporate america because they are a rat. Just kidding. I will clarify... it is not easy but it is simple. It just takes you completing step 1 from above with knowing what you want, then focus and use a system to get it. It boils down to giving yourself and your business the respect of treating it just like a business. If you have never had a business before, you want to partner with someone that is already successful so they can show you how to do it. Anyone can, but not everyone will. I believe if you really respect what you're doing and you have clarity of what you want, then the focus will come easy. As for the system... find people who are already doing what you want to do and ask them to share their system. If you are in network marketing like me, there are lots of systems out there. You can use one that is setup from one of your senior partners or you can find many online from other networkers. Regardless of whose system it is... do the due diligence and find out what will work for YOU and if you are in a business of network marketing, your system must be generic enough to be passed down to other generations to duplicate success.

This may seem like an elementary idea but maybe that's the basics we need to keep in front of us. My son is in 3rd grade and he knows he wants a new game system. He has researched the price and he asks all the time what he can do to make extra money to save up for it. He does the work and he saves the money because he has the clarity of what he wants. He has a system for making more money by asking to complete extra chores while keeping his focus on getting enough money to buy his new system. He is following thru' daily with the action to get him closer to obtaining his goal. I guess you can sum it up that if you really do want to leave your job, you should think like an elementary student. Decide what you want and do everything you can to make it happen.

I then write underneath what I need to do to achieve that goal. In this case I would have to sell X amount of products, or services to make that $100. Example: My Goal is to make $100 dollars this month. I need to sell 15 of this product. Step 1: Advertise by pay per click! Step 2: Learn how to use pay per click! Step 3: Tell my prospects about my product. Ect…

By doing this very simple exercise you create a road map, a checklist to follow. Now we have a direct path that will lead us to accomplishing the goal that we set out for ourselves. The concept is very basic, and it works every time. As you walk through each step you come one step closer to achieving that goal. By achieving that goal you have just witnessed success.

There are more things that will need to happen before you see absolute success, but writing down your goals it is a good place to start. You may want to brush up on your online marketing skills. There are many positive reasons to get started in a work from home business. It gives you the opportunity to make more money than working for someone else. You also are doing work that you enjoy and have the right to control and work your own schedule.

Running a home based business is different than working for someone else at a job where you have structure and a set schedule. You may feel that you have a great work ethic, and you probably do, but you must create a daily work schedule for yourself. Setting a schedule –

Don’t worry if your first attempt is not perfect you can always make adjustments later.

This is a work from home business so even though a schedule is important you can choose the hours that work best for you. If you are an early morning person you may choose to start early and not work late into the eve. You may even break up you day choosing a early time frame followed by a break then work again late into the evening. If you are also still working a regular job you will have to plan your home based business time around your job.

After you have determined your time frames you need to identify what your activities or tasks are.

Make a list categorizing your tasks in the order of importance; identify the critical activities and those with less priority. Another way to organize your tasks are by those that are income producing or require more focus and those that are busy work or routine. After you complete your list choose what percentage of your time to spend on critical and income producing activities and what percentage of your time on busy work/less important activities.

It probably makes sense to spend 80% to 90% on the first and 10% to 20% on the latter less important activities.

Before sketching your activities into your schedule also consider, when is your peak time, are you a morning or an evening person? You should then focus on the more critical activities that require the most concentration during your peak times.

Self Discipline –

Sticking to your schedule once you’ve set one up takes self discipline. Often what happens, and things like this happen to everyone, is that you’ll be working and you will get a phone call from a friend inviting you out to lunch or some other fun activity. Also, if other family members are around they will distract you to discuss other matters or ask you to do a task for them. It’s hard to say NO, so you need to communicate with your friends and family so they know what time periods you have available to spend with them. This communication will offer them a way to support you, having a good support system is very important.

It is easy to get distracted because you think well I can finish this work later or tomorrow. You need to treat your work from home business as a business that you were getting paid for working. If you were at a JOB you would have to be disciplined and stick to the job at hand, leaving that fun activity for when you have free time. The good news is that after you stick to you schedule for a while it becomes easier and easier to maintain as it becomes routine and then becomes a habit.

Giving yourself planned breaks will result in more efficiency resulting in fewer hours needed for working. Without a schedule many people don’t know when to stop working, thinking they have to work most of the time to get ahead. They then may suffer from burnout and feeling of loss of focus or direction.

So stick to your schedule and your home based business should generate pleasure, and when you accomplish certain projects reward yourself and have fun.

Everyone wants tips on how to earn money with a home based business. It never seems to amaze me that a lot of people with a work at home business are not earning some money. When I got to question a few of these people about why they are not earning any money, I found out why! People, you have to do something to earn something! Just because you have joined a MLM or affiliate program, don’t think just by sitting back you will earn some money. NOT TRUE!!!

So I have tried to make it easy on these people by coming up with the necessary things you need to do to earn money from home. If you honestly do these things, and still don’t make any money then maybe a home business is not for you. But you need to be honest about this and put out the effort.

1. When you first start with a work at home business, set out at least an hour a day devoted to your business.

2. Spend the first day advertising your business on the free classified websites, there are literally thousands of these sites to advertise on.

3. If you have a website for your business, then spend day 2 submitting your website to all of the search engines, Yahoo, MSN, Google, AOL, etc.

4. Day 3 start submitting to ezines, this is a very good way to promote your business.

5. Day 4 start by writing an article to use in the yahoo groups. And with this article your can promote your website at the end of the article.

6. Day 5 submit your business to the various business message boards, there are lots out there that let you post an ad for your home business.

7. Day 6 you will want to start advancing up and checking for "Leads" that are interested in starting a home business. When you find a good source you will want to start emailing them. To do this you will want a good auto responder to handle the high volume of emails.

8. Day 7 you will want to start this process all over again.

You can do these steps in any order, but remember persistence is the key. Spend an hour a day for the first 30 days on these 7 items. Each day promote your business in a different way. Within 30 days you will start to see the rewards of your work that you only spent 7-10 hours a week on!

Further more don’t expect to get rich overnight. The businesses offering "pie in the sky" so to speak do you a favor and stay away from those type of offers. Do yourself a favor when you get involved with a work at home business. You owe it to yourself to give it an honest try. Nothing will happen, if you don’t do anything.
