As promised in our last post, we’ll show you some of the stunning details involved in a recent Home Comfort Company basement finishing project. Our client James H. wanted additional entertaining space, and he wanted it to include an authentic Irish bar.

This project was designed and built entirely by Home Comfort Company. The bar is constructed of solid oak with a high-shine cherry finish to create the warm, inviting, authentic Irish feel our client wanted.

Starting out, our canvas wasn’t entirely blank.

We had to design the Irish bar around two existing support beams.

Voila! We encased the support beams in oak columns for flawless integration.

Using 2 x 4 framing, we established a finished bar height of 48″. Most stools are designed for a counter of that height, giving the client the widest number of options when he was ready to choose his seating.

St. Patrick’s Day is just around the corner! It’s the perfect opportunity to showcase a recent Home Comfort Company finished basement inspired by the rich warmth of an authentic Irish pub.

Our client, James H., was looking for additional room to entertain. Specifically, he wanted to transform his unfinished basement into a built-in bar with the welcoming ambiance of an authentic Irish pub.

James contacted Home Comfort Company through our website and requested a quote to finish his basement. After receiving our quote and initial consultation, he was confident Home Comfort Company could make his vision a reality.

After researching in detail the architecture and ambiance of Irish pubs (which naturally required visiting a number of favorites in the Madison area!) we submitted our plan to the client for approval and immediately began the project of transforming his basement.

STOP! Before you place an order with an online retailer, check out sites like RetailMeNot.com to find coupon codes for free shipping, discounts and special sales. A couple of key strokes and a few minutes of your time can add up to major savings.

This week we’re focusing on one of my favorite reasons for finishing a basement…creating recreational space. With the beginning of cooler weather and football season, October seems like the perfect month to highlight the possibilities for enjoying a basement rec area. Here is a helpful list of questions to consider as you plan your basement finishing project:

-What is my budget? Know your budget from the beginning. Your basement finishing project will be far less stressful if you know exactly how much you have to spend and how you want to spend it.

-What do I want to do with my recreational space? Do you like hosting sports parties? Watching movies? Providing the teenagers with a safe place to hang? How about creating a custom work space for your hobby? Make a list of everything you would like your new rec area to accommodate and provide. Creating a list will help your professional contractor satisfy as many of your goals as possible.

-Do I want to include a bathroom? While bathrooms are especially handy if you plan to entertain in your basement, they also require some additional planning and cost. Weigh having a convenient loo against the added cost to determine whether you want to send your guests “Up the stairs, second door on the right!”.

The Secret to Saving with CFL Bulbs

Switching out your old incandescent bulbs for CFLs is yet another way we see green becoming mainstream.

Yes, CFL’s save us money (calculate the savings for your home).

Yes, CFLs save us energy (two-thirds less on average).

However, CFLs are not a match made in heaven for every light socket in your home. Check out these tips from Home Comfort Company to make sure your green intentions are truly helping the planet…and your budget.

Buy quality bulbs. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for and CFL bulbs are at the top of that list (right after diapers and dishwashers). The cheap ones are cheap for a reason. Usually the ballast – which is responsible for regulating the electricity that flows through the bulb – is inferior resulting in flickering, buzzing and an all-around shorter life. Go with Sylvania, Phillips or GE for tried-and-true brands.

CFL bulbs perform best where they will be on for at least 15 minutes. Frequently switching the light on and off drastically shortens the life of a CFL bulb making it less than ideal for bathrooms, closets and motion-activated lamps.

Choose the right kind of CFL. If someone complains that CFL bulbs made his dining room feel like a prison yard or turned his living room into a dingy cave, he probably chose the wrong bulb. Do a little research to find out which CFL is best for your fixture. Here’s an interactive resource to make things easier.

Use CFL bulbs specifically made for ceiling fans in your fan light fixture. Regular CFLs can’t withstand the vibrations from the rotating fan blades and will fail early.

Properly recycle the CFL bulb. CFLs require a small amount of mercury to function. Thus they must be recycled properly so they don’t end up in a landfill where the mercury can leach into the soil and contaminate the local groundwater and food chain. Find a recycling point in the Madison, WI area.

5 Things We Love About the Not-So-Big House

What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “Not-So-Big House”?

While a Not-So-Big House might be small or affordable, it’s much more than that. The Not-So-Big House is actually a design philosophy – a revolution, really. It teaches that your home should be the best (rather than the biggest) that you can afford. Here are five things WE as Madison area custom home builders love about the Not-So-Big House and use regularly when designing our floor plans:

1. Bigger is not necessarily better. We emphasize lifestyle over square footage and a sense of home over sheer size. A house that is beautiful and that inspires you is more delightful than one that is merely “big”.

2. Allow your budget and your lifestyle to inspire you. What is your daily life like? What do you value? What sort of design would simplify or complement your way of life? Once you identify what you want for your home, you can take the money you have available and make it work for you in the most powerful way possible.

3. Build a little smaller so you have a budget for the details. Again, Not-So-Big doesn’t necessarily mean small. Usually it means utilizing space and flow so your home is about a third smaller than you thought it needed to be. Use the money you would have spent on unnecessary square footage and use it to create handy, exceptional or just plain beautiful details in your home.

4. Build smart. Use storage, lighting, color, furniture arrangement, built-ins and the floor plan itself to make a smaller home fit your needs. Create adaptable spaces that are useful for a variety of functions. Avoid duplicating functions that you’ve already covered elsewhere in your floor plan.

5. Create a home with care, quality and craftsmanship. A well-thought out home with a floor plan that inspires and complements your lifestyle will be appreciated for generations.

Seven Home Remodeling Mistakes

There’s no way to guarantee a hassle-free remodeling project. However, you can avoid the majority of hidden cost headaches by staying away from these seven home remodeling mistakes:

1. Sloth

Neglect your homework. Start with an unrealistic budget. Or no budget at all.

2. Pride

Try to do everything yourself. Homeowners who are surprised by the estimates they get from contractors often decide the best way to cut costs is by doing the work themselves. Less accomplished do-it-yourselfers usually run into problems they never expected. They figure out halfway through that they can’t do it themselves and then call in a professional. Unfortunately it ends up costing even more than if had they just called the contractor in the first place.

3. Stinginess

Hire the contractor who gives you the lowest bid. Cost is important, but it’s not the only factor in hiring a contractor. You should hire someone you have confidence in and feel comfortable with. The best choice is a contractor who’s licensed and insured, and who has worked in your community for a number of years without a bunch of angry customers filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau.

4. Ignorance

Disregard the effect on your property values. On average, every dollar you spend remodeling a bathroom, replacing windows or finishing a basement will add about 70 cents to your home’s resale value. Naturally some projects add more value than others. That doesn’t mean you should automatically reject improvements that don’t yield a big return on your investment. If granite countertops or a sunroom add to the beauty and enjoyment of your home, go for it. Just do so with a full understanding of how those changes will influence your home’s resale value. If you’re not sure how a project might influence your property value, ask a real estate agent.

5. Over-personalizing.

You want your home to reflect your individual taste, but some changes are more permanent than others. You may love fuschia and golf, but combining them for your bathroom tile theme is bound to be a decision you’ll regret. Use towels and throw pillows to make a statement. Neutral colors and patterns are a better choice for walls and fixtures — they’ll go the distance, and you’ll be less likely to get tired of them.

6. Inconsistency

Make changes that contrast with your home’s style. Incongruent alterations – such as building a modern addition to a classic farmhouse – will only detract from your home’s beauty. Changes that are out of sync with other homes in the neighborhood also can create a bad impression when you want to sell.

7. Incompletion

Leaving a project half-done is worse than never starting it. It hurts the beauty and value of your home and makes it less enjoyable to live there. The problem is almost always money. Watch out for the four major reasons homeowners run out of cash:

An unrealistic budget
Unexpected problems that add thousands of dollars to the original cost.
A contractor who does poor work and leaves you in the lurch.
Expensive changes you make in the middle of the project.
