Home Office Ideas for a Wonderful Workspace

Working from home has become more commonplace than ever, as corporate employees are now joining the ranks of freelancers and self-employed business owners who don't clock in at a common workplace. According to The Business Insider, major corporations such as IBM, Xerox, United Health Group and Apple offer numerous work from home opportunities posted on telecommuting job seeking sites such as FlexJobs. Regardless of how you hone your skills and knowledge to work remotely, a functional, inspiring workspace can help boost your enthusiasm and increase your productivity.

The space where I generate ideas about coordinating color schemes, mixing different fabric patterns or combining various furniture styles is inhabited by an eclectic mix of collectibles and sentimental gifts. Japanese Geisha dolls, an incense burning dragon and a jellyfish encased in glass live among peacock feathers and a jumbo cocktail glass serving as a candle holder on the topmost shelf of my desk. Sugar skulls and mementos from my daughter fill the cubbies. A large potted tree warms the corner by my mini home office consisting of a desk with hutch and rolling cart printer stand..

I don't need a lot of space as a writer or a decorator. I prefer my desktop PC as most interior design programs are still PC based and I work best and fastest with a roller ball mouse. I have a large desktop that allows me to spread out papers, pictures or other materials if I need to. With plenty of storage for tools and office supplies, everything I need to work is right in front of me. And this workspace is completely accessible, being that I am disabled. While decorative elements may not be a necessity in a home office, they make your work area feel more inviting, creating a space you'll want to spend more time in.

Although this wall in my spacious master bedroom provides a comfortable and inviting work area for a writer/interior decorator, my dream workspace would look more like this:

This awe inspiring workspace was built by graphic designer, Peter Daniel Frazier, who realized he could downsize his office to a laptop computer and iPhone. Doubling as a guest house, Frazier named his serene home office 'The Cube.' The standing desk offers respite from a sore back or bum, which can occur when sitting for hours. When the feet call for a time-out, a few comfortable seating options come in to play.

If you don't have access to breathtaking forest views, a beautiful garden or courtyard can also suffice for a thought provoking, contemplative atmosphere. For anyone who enjoys nature, beautiful landscapes and the feeling of being outdoors, an office with a view can inspire an uplifting mood.

You and your teenager may be at odds when it comes to bedroom design ideas. However, with a little open-mindedness and a little compromise, there is hope for parents and teens to come together and create a look that everyone can be happy with.

Planning

The first step you and your teen should take when planning a room makeover is to figure out a budget. Kids this age are old enough to understand the concept of a budget and how to spend money responsibly. Allowing them to participate in the financial area of the project is a great learning experience. If your child’s design ideas are larger than what you can comfortably afford, why not give him or her the opportunity to earn some of the extra money that may be needed, through extra chores around the house, babysitting, mowing lawns, chores for neighbors, etc.

Once you have a budget figured out, sit down together and make a list of the things that need to be changed in the room, including what you want to add and what you want to take away. Extra money for the room change budget could also come from selling things like furniture, books, clothing, etc. through a yard sale.

Color and Paint

Paint is one of the most inexpensive ways to make a big impact when changing the look in a room. The trick here is finding a color you can both live with. A new color for the walls should also be one of the last things chosen, after your teen has picked out new bedding and accessories. It’s much easier to coordinate paint color with the room’s furnishings than vice versa.

Bring paint chip cards home to view under the room’s lighting and to compare against the surrounding colors in the room. Buy sample pots of the top two or three choices and try the colors out on the walls or on sample boards. If your teenager wants to paint the room in black, it’s time for some compromising alternatives.

One good thing about black is that it goes well with almost any other color. If your teen likes black, find another color you can both agree on and then think of ways you can incorporate black into the room’s color scheme. Black can be a striking color for an accent wall, or consider doing a stenciled design in black. For something different, paint the ceiling black. Other ways to incorporate black into the room include bedding, throw pillows, rugs and furniture.

A night sky ceiling is a fun theme for a teen bedroom. Instead of black, paint the ceiling a deep shade of indigo. Use phosphorescent glowing paint to paint in stars, comets and cosmic glowing gas clouds. Organizing

No matter what style your teen is into, keeping the room organized and clear of clutter is essential and usually a challenge. The following tips can help keep your teen’s bedroom a safe, inhabitable space that won’t bring to mind the last episode of “Hoarders” you saw.

Buy storage containers and baskets that match or contrast with the room’s color scheme.
Install extra wall shelves for knick-knacks, books, video games, movies, etc. Install hooks underneath to hang necklaces, hats, belts or scarves.
Put a clothes hamper in the closet. When the clothes reach the top, make it a rule to wash at least two loads (the rule is for the teen, not Mom).
Add a really cool garbage can, like the colorful cans available at The Container Store.com and insist that it gets used.

Wall Décor

Teenagers love to express themselves through graffiti. You can find it all over their notebooks, the soles of their shoes and often, even on themselves. A great idea for wall décor in a teen bedroom is dry erase wall decals. Teens can place these self-adhesive decals anywhere they want and write messages or draw pictures. The decals can be peeled off and placed somewhere else without damaging the wall. Walls can also be decorated with large murals depicting graphic graffiti designs. Replace the closet door with a beaded curtain to add sparkle and shine in the room. For some really cool accent lighting, go with fairy lights. LED fairy lights are inexpensive and can be used in dozens of ways. Some of them are as small as a grain of rice and come on thin wires that can be wrapped around a curtain rod, headboard, mirror or placed inside a glass container, as they are battery operated. Choosing Paint Colors for Rooms in Your Home

A mix of different wall colors in your home adds interest and variety; a good antidote for the dulling effect of the same monotone neutral color repeated through every room. However, to avoid a jarring, choppy effect, you need a simple palette of colors that flow smoothly from one room to the next. If you have an existing color in a room that you want to keep, such as gray-blue walls in the kitchen, then build your color scheme from this hue.

Color Family and Undertones

For a seamless look between the kitchen and dining room, consider a hue in the same color family as gray or blue. Gray is a neutral color with one of three undertones, blue, green or purple. Blue, green and purple are analogous colors, meaning they fit within the same color family. So you could use a similar shade of green or purple with gray undertones. Conversely, a similar shade of gray with green or purple undertones would also work.

Monochromatic Options

Another way to create unity and color flow throughout the home is to use lighter and darker shades of the same color. This is called a monochromatic color scheme and it is what you find on paint chip samples that show varying tints and shades of the same color. One option is to go much lighter with the gray, such as an off white with a blue undertone or go darker with a deep slate gray or charcoal hue.

Complementary Choices

If the gray-blue color in the kitchen has a strong blue undertone, you may want to consider a complementary shade of orange in the dining room. The key to making this work is to keep the saturation of the orange consistent with the gray-blue in the kitchen, meaning you need to use a muted tone of orange. Complementary color schemes take a little more courage to use but they can have stunning effects. In the following photo,

Building a Palette

Now that you have an idea of the types of colors that coordinate with a gray-blue kitchen, you’ll need to decide on a method for using them. A color palette typically consists of 3 to 5 colors. Once you’ve chosen these colors, alternate the primary, secondary and accent colors. This means you can repeat the same gray-blue in the kitchen as a secondary or accent color in the dining room, such as using it on the trim, on the ceiling or in the décor such as table linens. Mixing in a neutral such as white or brown helps you achieve a balanced flow from room to room.

Decorating with colors that seem unrelated can be tricky. Blue and red are not part of the same color family, nor are they complementary opposites. However, if you pay attention to the undertones and the saturation or intensity of each color, a successful combination in a color scheme becomes much easier to pull off. Using colors in a decorating theme can also help you discover other ways in which they relate to each other.

Combine blue and red in a nautical color scheme. Images such as anchors, coral, boats, life preservers and light houses may contain bright accents of red. Blue and white striped patterns create a crisp contrast on an area rug or upholstered chair. Paint a bright blue accent wall behind the bed. Brightly colored nautical flags in red white and blue can be represented in framed art or on accent pillows. Include a few neutral hues in white, beige, brown and tan. Tulle is a versatile, sheer material that can be used in a number of ways to enhance bedroom décor, from curtains to bed canopies. Create Elegant Tulle Bed Canopies

Use tulle at the head of the bed to create a comfortable reading nook or add it to a wall teester, commonly known as a bed crown. Drape a long length of tulle between two ceiling mounted curtain rods installed at the head of the bed, with enough material to reach the floor on both sides and an elegant dip in the middle. Use two more rods at the foot of the bed to drape a second tulle canopy or drape long tulle panels over a four poster frame. Sew a casing along the top edge of tulle panels to create a custom bed canopy. Tulle comes in many colors so you don't have to stick with just white. Decorative table decor and additional accent lighting can do wonders to enhance your home for entertaining. Coordinating your decor with color or a common theme can be a fun way to get creative with your evening festivities. Although dining rooms and patios are the obvious areas to focus on when decorating for a party, don’t forget to spruce up the bathroom and especially the foyer, so that guests feel they are walking in to something special.

Elegant Table Centerpieces

Dress up your dining table or patio table with an elegant centerpiece. Centerpieces can easily be created with materials around your home and clippings from your yard. You can also gather supplies from thrift stores, dollar stores, yard sales or even grocery stores. Look for inexpensive glass vases and bowls. Fill them with whole citrus fruit or a combination of whole fruit and round slices. Citrus fruit can also stabilize tall floral stems in mixed centerpiece arrangements. Fill glass containers with varying levels of water and add floating candles and flower blossoms picked right out of your garden or backyard. Use seasonal produce, such as pumpkins, gourds and squashes in fall or fresh berries in spring in combination with candles and other tabletop décor. Place centerpiece materials along a table runner, on a decorative serving tray or on an inexpensive mirror.

Menu Themed Parties

When trying to come up with decorating ideas for your next adult party, let the menu become the inspiration for decorative décor. Turn a Mexican dinner into a fiesta with brightly colored serveware, sombreros or colorful serapes draped over chair backs and jumbo Margarita glasses filled with colorful tissue paper flowers.

Dress up a wine themed party with wine bottle hurricane shades and wine bottle flower vases as table centerpieces. Wine glass candle holders can be made by partially filling the glass with small colored glass beads and inserting a votive candle in the middle or the glass can be turned upside down with a flower placed underneath and a candle placed on the inverted base. Use large serving trays to set out samples of cheese, nuts, grapes and chocolate.

DIY Headboard Project

It's been way too long since I've posted here at Home Decorating News, and to those who were kind enough to follow me, I apologize for that. An unexpected visit to the hospital over the summer put me behind on everything and trying to catch up has been a challenge. I am happy to say I finally completed the interior decorating course last month through Penn Foster College and I now have certification as an interior decorator! This will mean big changes for my website, HomeTreasureCove, as my plan is to combine decorating services with the home decor I sell online.

In the meantime, I will continue to write decorating articles for Demand Media and LoveToKnow, as well as keeping up here with great decorating and home improvement tips and ideas. The bed is typically the focal point of a bedroom and an ideal place to begin designing. One of the easiest and most cost effective ways to personalize a bed is by creating a one-of-a-kind upholstered headboard.

Custom-made furniture in a bedroom can transform the entire feel and mood of the room. Headboards are a wonderful expression of personality, often customized by shapes, coverings and embellishments.

Before crafting, check out current homes on the market for popular bedroom designs, or get inspired by exploring design-forward bedrooms on Zillow Digs. Once settled on the ideal look, gather a few tools and basic building materials to create the feature piece for the bedroom. Here is how to get started.

The Materials:

- 4 feet x 8 feet medium-density fibreboard (depending on size of bed)

- Mattress pad (choose one size up from the bed)

- Large roll of wool batting

- Cover fabric of choice

- Buttons, upholstery pins or embellishments and trim of choice

- Wax twine for button threading

The Tools:

- Large upholstery needle

- Jigsaw for cutting fibreboard

- Nail gun

- Spray glue

- Marker, craft scissors and craft knife

- Needle nose pliers

- Rubber mallet

The Method:

1. Choose a headboardstyle and headboard fabric. Busy and bold prints look great in neutral toned rooms, whereas softer, simpler patterns can be coupled with bold embellishments, button tufts and trim.

2. Create the frame using fibreboard. Measure the width of the bed in order to get the desired amount of fibreboard. Depending on the size of bed, an average size to start with for a queen size bed is 4 feet x 8 feet. Curved or rounded edges can be traced using household items such as tin cans or containers, and cut using a jigsaw.

3. Using the completed frame as a stencil, trace onto the mattress pad, and cut out using a craft knife. Adhere to the frame using spray glue.

4. Secure the mattress pad onto the frame with a layer of batting; secure the excess by folding the batting over the edges of the frame with a nail gun.

5. Begin covering with fabric by starting from the middle of each side and working to the corners. Secure the excess over the edges of the frame with a nail gun.

The Details:

- DIY Buttons: Use button cover kits to create custom buttons in the same fabric as the headboard or choose different colored buttons for a bolder, more creative look.

- Button Tufts: Get this classic quilted look by sewing buttons into the headboard. Before adhering the mattress pad to the frame, mark and drill small holes through the fibreboard where buttons are desired, then adhere the mattress pad and continue to cover with batting and fabric. Using the twine and needle, start at the reverse side of the headboard, push needle and thread through each hole, piercing the mattress pad on the other side, thread button and poke back through. The twine can be secured on the reverse side of the headboard using a nail gun.

- Nailhead Trim: A studded trim border looks sleek and stylish. Nailhead trim kits are quick and easy to use and the end result looks great. Use needle nose pliers to stabilize the nail and mallet to secure into the headboard. Use a mallet rather than a regular hammer to avoid damaging the nail head.

- Embellishments: The options are endless here; get creative by including felt, lace, mirrors, sequins, beads or even fairy lights.

Creating a custom headboard is a great way to start personalizing the bedroom. Follow up this home improvement project with a matching bedspread, chalk paint bedside table, refurbished lamp and do-it-yourself art. Soon the bedroom should feel full of character.

Not sure what size to get? Well first you will need to measure the diameter of your existing fixture to make sure the shade will fit over it. The height of the shade is not as critical, as it's common for part of the fixture to be left exposed. However, the drum shade should be positioned so that it covers the actual lamps or light bulbs. The correct size will also be determined by where you are installing the fixture. If you're adding a drum shade to a dining room chandelier, the diameter of the shade should be within 12 inches of the total width of the table underneath it. The appropriate size for a chandelier or hanging pendant installed in any other room can be determined by measuring the length and width of the room. Add those two numbers together and the total will give you a guideline as to how many inches the diameter of the shade should be for that space. For example, a 10' x 12' room would need a shade with a diameter of 22 inches.

Modern Home Office design

There are numerous ways to decorate with fabric. A typical fabric panel consists of fabric wrapped around a rigid surface or frame such as a piece of plywood, canvas frame or foamboard. You can often find wood frame pieces made for canvas art frames that have corners designed to interlock at craft or art stores. Your fabric piece should wrap around your board or frame with 1 to 2 inches of leftover fabric on each side. Staple or tape the fabric to the back of the board or frame, pulling the fabric very tight and folding the corners like you would when wrapping a present. Use a very strong, durable tape like duct tape if you can’t use staples, making sure you can’t see any tape from the front. Use wall putty or a picture hanger to hang the fabric panel.

Easy Window Treatments: Scarf Valances

If you are looking for an easy way to dress up your windows or you want something out of the ordinary, scarf valances may be just what you're looking for. A scarf valance can be used with curtains, blinds, shades or used alone to provide a chic look while still allowing plenty of light to enter through the window. You can buy ready-made scarf valances or make them yourself. If you don't know how to sew or you don't own a sewing machine, don't worry. You can still make a scarf valance without touching a needle or thread, as long as you have an iron.

You'll need to install some hardware to support your scarf valance. Look for a decorative curtain rod to hang the valance from. Any type of curtain rod will work but you may want to stick with a wooden curtain rod. This way, you can secure the fabric with thumb tacks if necessary. Wood rods can also give the window treatment a classic, upscale look. Add interest with decorative finials.

An easy way to figure out how much fabric you need is to multiply the width of the window by three. if you have a very large window and you plan on using multiple swags in your scarf valance, add about 10 to 15 inches for each swag.

To hem your fabric without sewing, lay the fabric out on the floor. Fold approximately 1 inch of fabric over and press the seam with an iron. Insert hemming tape into the fold and iron again to secure the hem. Repeat this for each side of the fabric.

There are several methods for hanging a scarf valance, depending on the look you want. For a single swag with symmetrical amounts of fabric hanging on each side, you will need to find the center of the fabric and mark it with safety pins or tape. Mark the center of the curtain rod as well. Fold the fabric in accordian style folds and secure with safety pins or loosely tie string around the scarf to hold the pleats in place. Hold the material up to the rod and match the center marks. Then drape the fabric over each end of the curtain rod, front to back. Pull down the center into a crescent and adjust the sides. Remove the safety pins or string and adjust the folds as needed.

For more of a designer look, hang the scarf asymmetrically, with one side shorter than the other. You can also install eyehook medallions above the window and thread the fabric through them, with cascades hanging in between. Make multiple cascades for larger windows, looping the material around the rod as you go. Intertwine two colors for a layered look.

For the best results, use a two sided fabric that doesn't have a wrong side that will show when twisting and turning. Silk, satin, chenille or any type of sheer fabric will work well for a scarf valance.

Buying a cheap piece of glass might seem appealing, especially if it is a pretty factory made piece, but quality shines through and you won’t receive anywhere near as many admiring comments from visitors. Plus, as it is not an artist piece it is unlikely to be worth much more, even after ten years.

Although some factory glass is cheap and cheerless, there are lots of good looking pieces being produced. So, if you can’t afford a couple of hundred dollars you can still find pretty pieces for your home.

A friend of mine buys Clarice Cliff, some very collectible pottery. He buys like 20 pieces and then leaves them boxed in his attic for about ten years and then sells them on. He makes great money but I always feel a little sad that these wonderful handmade works are hidden away for a decade with no one to admire them.

A piece of glass that has been hand worked by a master craftsman in the searing heat of the furnace shows its superb and classy nature even before it has cooled on the artisan’s work bench.

Invest in high quality and you will have both a classy artwork all of your own as well as a little financial nest egg for the future.

Faux Painting Techniques- Color Washing

If you're looking for a way to give your home a professional designer look without the expense of hiring one, there is a relatively simple faux painting technique that can transform ordinary walls into extraordinary walls. Color washing, also known as glazing, is a type of decorative painting that creates a multi-dimensional, textured effect to walls, ceilings or any surface it is applied to. The technique involves a two-step process where a base color is layered underneath a second glaze color. Various visual effects are created depending on the method used to apply the glaze mixture.

One of the most straightforward techniques is to apply the glaze mixture with a soft, damp rag. This typically results in a soft, mottled or marbled look that is subtle, yet elegant:

The lighter base coat can be applied with a paint roller. Water based, latex paint is the easiest to work with. After the base coat is completely dry, the wall will be ready for the glaze. Clear glaze can be mixed with your choice of latex paint or you can buy a tinted or pre-mixed glaze. To apply the glaze, dip a damp rag into the mixture and begin to wipe the color onto the wall in a circular motion, just as if you were cleaning the wall. Keep extra rags on hand in case you make a mistake or need to thin the color out more.

For a more textured look, a brush or a sea sponge can be used:

When applying glaze with a brush, start with a large "X" pattern, about 12 inches tall and wide. Continue to fill in the space using criss cross brush strokes until the color is blended with the base color showing through. Go back over the area with a clean dry brush to feather and soften any brush strokes that remain.

If you choose to use a sponging technique, wet the sponge with water and then wring it out thoroughly. Dip the damp sponge into the glaze and dab the color on the wall. Continue blotting color in random patterns, leaving several inches between each blot until there is no more glaze left on the sponge. Go back and fill-in the empty spaces without reloading the sponge. Always work in small sections when color washing, in areas about 4' x 4'.

Let it be all wood.

There are few, if any, materials as natural to us homo-sapiens as wood. It provides our most basic material for building, for furnishings and for fuel – and has done so for a few hundred thousand years now! Perhaps that’s why we still love the look and feel of natural wood in our homes today when it’s no longer actually needed. There are always substitutes, but there’s nothing that looks and feels quite the same – and there’s surely no material that’s quite as comforting to body and spirit.

An increasing number of people are now going for the all-wooden look. One of the biggest challenges for many do-it-yourself homeowners is picking out interior paint colors. Have you ever browsed through a home decorating magazine and wondered what the secret is for adding just the right paint colors to each room? All you need is a basic knowledge of color, including how colors relate to each other and how color can affect the atmosphere and mood of a room.

The Color Wheel

You may remember seeing one of these from art class in school. The color wheel is one of the tools interior designers and decorators use to create color schemes for their design projects. There have been many variations of the color wheel, however, the type of wheel many designers rely on contain 12 colors, including primary (red, blue, yellow), secondary colors (green, orange and violet) and tertiary colors, which are a combination of primary and secondary colors such as blue-green and red-orange.

Color Schemes

Color schemes are a grouping of colors that are harmonious when placed together. Colors with harmony are aesthetically pleasing and balanced. Here are a few techniques designers use to create color schemes:

Analogous

An analogous color scheme is created by using three colors that appear next to each other on the color wheel. An example would be a color scheme that included shades and tints of red, red-orange and orange.

Monochromatic

A monochromatic scheme is created by using different shades and tints of one color. It may sound boring at first, however, when done correctly, a monochromatic color scheme can still be stunning, as you can see below:

Complementary

A complementary color scheme uses colors that appear opposite of each other on a color wheel, such as blue and orange, red and green or violet and yellow. This type of scheme has variations such as a double complementary (tetradic), which uses two sets of complementary colors (ex. red and green and violet and yellow) or a split complementary, which uses a color such as yellow and the two colors on each side of its complement (violet), blue-violet and red-violet.

These online virtual paint tools allow you to upload your own photos or use one of their interior room scenes to virtually try on different paint colors. This is an excellent way to plan a color scheme for your next remodeling project.

If you’re still not sure how to start when adding color to the walls of a room, consider the other décor that will share the room. Pick up one or two of the predominant colors found in the upholstery, fabrics, artwork or decorative accents, which will also be a part of the room’s overall design, and build your color scheme from there.

Home Decorating Themes Part 6- Asian

An Asian decorating theme is one of the most beautiful, elegant and exotic decorating styles. Although Asia is a vast continent with over 60 different countries and cultures, Asian decorating and décor is usually a reference to the styles, culture, art and fashion of the Far East, or what used to be referred to as the Orient. This includes countries such as China, Japan, Vietnam and Korea.

Asian style furniture has a very shiny, highly polished, lacquer finish. Exotic woods such as rosewood, mahogany, Poplar and bamboo are used to make exquisite furniture, which can be either intricately carved and painted or left very simple and plain with clean, straight lines.

Chinese Influences

Chinese style furniture has a very artistic, ornate appearance with beautiful, hand painted motifs, brass accents and/or intricate carved designs. If opulent settings appeal to you, look for chinoiseri style décor. Chinoiseri is a French word meaning ”Chinese-esque”. This term originated in the late 1800s and was first seen in Europe, as a decorating style influenced by Chinese art and culture.

Bright, vivid colors are commonly seen in Chinese decorating styles and in particular, the color red. Red is a color of good fortune in Chinese culture and is often paired with black or gold for a striking contrast. Other primary and secondary colors often used in Chinese art and décor are blue and yellow and green.

Chinese porcelain has been highly sought after by collectors since the 17^th century, when it started to become a prized possession of the upper-class in Europe and eventually, worldwide. The classic blue and white pattern known as Willow Ware is the most recognized style of Chinese porcelain. Jade and brass are also commonly seen in Chinese vases.

Japanese Influences

Japanese style furniture is more modest and simple in design. Shiny, lacquered finishes are still common. However, straight lines and minimal embellishments help create a harmonious balance with the minimalist approach of Japanese design.

Traditional rice paper screens called Shoji screens can be used to create separate areas of a larger space while also diffusing the light. Combined with Tatami mats and traditional Japanese furniture such as platform beds and low profile coffee tables and end tables, your home will have an authentic Japanese look.

Natural Influences

Nature is a prominent theme in Asian decorating. Chinese décor has an abundance of animal motifs such as fish, butterflies, peacocks, cranes, tigers, horses, pandas, cats and mythical creatures such as dragons and the Phoenix. Japanese koi fish are commonly seen in Asian style art, as are a plethora of floral designs such as cherry blossoms, chrysanthemums, peony blossoms, roses and exotic plants such as bamboo and bonsai trees.

Natural textures are seen in accessories such as straw mats, bamboo floors or blinds, rice paper screens and natural stone furnishings.

Asian Textiles

Asian textiles can truly be exotic treasures. Persian and Oriental rugs and tapestries are more than just decorative items. Often considered works of art, especially if they are antiques, Asian rugs and tapestries can command a high price.

I love tropical decorating styles. My blog and website are good indicators of how much this style appeals to me. If you can't live in a tropical paradise, you can certainly capture the essence of this region and bring it into your home.
Tropical, island and beach themes are popular decorating styles that aren't just limited to homes in warm climates or near the ocean. This casual, laid-back style fits in well with contemporary homes. Many eclectic style homes also embrace the exotic, natural elements found in tropical style decor.

A tropical decorating theme can also be eco-friendly, as much of the natural wood that grows in tropical regions is considered sustainable, meaning the material is easy to renew. Many fast-growing, tropical materials include:

These types of plants can actually thrive with regular harvesting, which promotes rapid regrowth.

Although many tropical style homes have a casual or contemporary feel, this style can also work in a more traditional setting, as you can see in the beautifully designed room below:

The abundance of natural elements found in tropical style decor provides many rich and varied textures, such as wicker. Wicker furniture is constructed using materials such as rattan and other tropical grasses that are tightly woven together.

Bamboo poles also have a very unique texture with their jointed segments. Tropical grasses such as jute and abaca can be made into rugs, textured wallpaper and mats that have wonderful, earthy textures.

Home Decorating Themes Part 4- Rustic Lodge

Lodge style decorating is inspired by a passion and appreciation for the great outdoors. This style dates back to the early 20th century, when a young architect by the name of Robert Reamer went to work designing one of the most impressive examples of American architecture to date. Reamer sourced materials from the surrounding area to construct the Old Faithful Inn, the nation's first and most famous national park lodge, located in Yellowstone National Park.

Reamer used volcanic rhyolite stone, quarried about 5 miles away from the inn, to build the massive 500 ton fireplace and chimney, which stretches to the top of the 65 foot high ceiling in the lobby. Huge lodgepole pine timbers and hewn logs are seen throughout the 700 foot long, seven-story high building. This rustic architecture style became known as "parkitecture," the inspiration for today's rustic and lodge decorating style.

The majority of log homes in America today incorporate this design style with features like stone fireplaces and natural wood furnishings throughout the home. In addition, lodge style decorating embraces the natural flora and fauna found in the North American wilderness. Rustic furnishings made from deer and elk antlers are commonly seen in the form of chandeliers and lamps. Rawhide and leather are popular materials for things such as lampshades and upholstery.

Southwestern style decorating is one of the most popular themes for residential homes in the western United States and particularly in places like Arizona, New Mexico,Texas, Nevada, Southern California and Utah. Southwestern decor is heavily influenced by the art and culture of desert dwelling tribes like the Navajo and Apache and the Pueblo tribes of the four corners region of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado. This style is also influenced by the Spanish missions scattered throughout this region, mixed with the exotic elements of the native Aztecs of Mexico.

Southwestern architecture is characterized by adobe style houses and Spanish haciendas. Authentic adobe is a mixture of earth, water and straw formed into bricks and baked in the sun. Modern adobe homes have stucco walls.

Homes built in the Spanish hacienda style feature smooth plaster walls, interior courtyards, semicircular arched arcades, arched doorways and windows, terra-cotta roof tiles and decorative wrought iron trim.

Southwestern color schemes are influenced by warm, vibrant desert colors including yellow, orange, red, brown and gold, mixed with cool tones of cobalt blue, green, violet and turquoise.

Southwestern furniture is very rustic wood furniture in either a natural finish or painted in bright, vibrant colors with a distressed finish. Wrought iron is also used as hardware and for decorative accessories, much the same as in Mediterranean style furnishings.

Southwestern decor is comprised of many Native American arts and crafts such as Indian pottery, Kachina dolls, Navajo blankets and rugs, Indian baskets, dream catchers and other Native American artifacts. Southwestern designs are also heavily influenced by the native flora and fauna found in the desert environment including Saguaro cactus, Ocotillo, lizards, snakes, scorpions and coyotes. Brightly colored Mexican tile and ceramics mixed with rustic, Spanish style furnishings gives Southwestern style decor an eclectic feel.

Home Decorating Themes Part 2- French Country Style

French country style interior design shares similar elements with Tuscan style decor. Both styles have Old World European influences and Mediterranean inspirations.What makes French country style unique is the shabby chic, cottage style, antique look of furnishings and decor with a distressed finish. Both traditional and romantic, French country is a casual yet elegant decorating style embraced by many American homes today.

A French country color palette reflects the natural colors found in the warm, sunny French countryside. Bright yellow brings to mind the cheerful sunflower filled fields under the pale blue southern French sky. Soft, pale purple hues are reminiscent of French lavender fields, mixed with bright, red orange accents representing the colorful poppies scattered throughout the rural countryside.Traditional neutral tones such as beige, cream and ivory are seen in the aged plaster walls of old French country farmhouses and the distressed finish of quaint, cottage style furniture.

French country furniture is both rustic and casual, featuring a lot of wrought iron, distressed metal and hand carved wood. Both wood and metal furnishings are often painted in white, ivory or a light pastel color. The finish will be cracked and speckled giving the furniture a timeworn, antique appearance.

Floral fabrics in bright, vivid colors are common, as is the Toile de Jouy pattern. Toile is a French word meaning "cloth". It is typically a repeating pattern on a light background, often showing people engaged in various activities, plants, animals or a combination of all.

Roosters are often featured in French country motifs,along with other farm animals such as chickens, cows and pigs. A French country kitchen may have copper cookware displayed in hanging pot racks, French ceramic pottery and wine bottles stored on a rustic, wrought iron bakers rack and a vase of fresh cut lavender or sunflowers taking center stage on a rustic wood dining table.

Home Decorating Themes Part 1- Tuscan Style

It's easy to give your home a cohesive, unified look with a home decorating theme. In the first part of my home decorating themes series, I will introduce Tuscan style interior design.

Tuscan style interior design is influenced by Old World, Mediterranean style furnishings and decor that bring to mind a beautiful country estate nestled against the gently rolling hills of the Italian Tuscan countryside. Mixed with French and Spanish influences, Tuscan style furnishings incorporate materials such as wrought iron, natural wood, aged plaster, terra cotta tiles and natural stone including Travertine, marble and limestone.

A Tuscan color scheme will include a warm, earthy color palette inspired by the natural elements found in this sunny, Mediterranean climate. The holiday season is in full swing and I've got some excellent holiday decor to share with you. I have hand picked each of these items, which will not only make beautiful holiday displays in your home, these items are also great gift ideas!

I love the look of traditional or vintage holiday decor. This holiday plate display includes an attractive green metal stand that holds three decorative plates featuring traditional holiday scenes of snowmen, 19th century Christmas carolers and Santa on a rooftop.
