A pond is a simple but effective addition to all but the smallest gardens. It provides somewhere for the eye to linger and can help divide large expanses of lawn. Aesthetic benefits aside, small bodies of water such as ponds are great for wildlife. In fact, scientists say that they are just as important as lakes and rivers in supporting aquatic biodiversity.

Preparation

Choose the site for the pond. Most people prefer somewhere that can be seen from the house. Avoid shady areas near deciduous trees and anywhere that will interfere with the garden’s natural pathways. Also decide where the earth excavated from the pond will go.

All the tools needed to create a pond are available from suppliers such as http://www.tool-net.co.uk. The most essential include a craft knife, hose, long plank, spirit level, spade, butyl liner, wooden pegs, pond insulation liner, canes, soft building sand and some form of edging material. Site lighting can be helpful if you need to finish the pond in a hurry.

Getting started

Define the edge of the pond by laying out the piece of hosepipe. Once the shape has been decided, view it from all angles to make any fine adjustments. Use the spade to remove the turf from within the marked out area. Dig down to a depth of at least 12 inches, making sure the soil is moved to a pile well away from the pond’s edge.

Use a piece of hose or sprinkle some building sand to mark a ledge within the pond’s perimeter. Remove soil from within this area to the required depth. Check that the shelf is level using the spirit level. Consider making a slope on one part of the pond to give animals that may fall in a means of escape.

Lining and filling the pond

Take any sharp stones or objects out of the hole and spread a few centimetres of building sand across the entire area. Place the pond insulation liner on top of the sand. Finally, spread the butyl liner across the hole, taking care not to damage it with any sharp objects. Hold the sides of the liner in place using bricks.

Start filling the pond with water. When it is full, turn the water off and trim the edges of the liner so that there is a 12-inch overlap around the edges. Cover this overlap with paving slabs or turf.

Want to be the envy of all the neighbours in the avenue then a water feature has to be placed into the garden. What ever fancy garden ornamentation that is to be – is entirely up to your own choosing. Because of the many designs and fixtures you may come up against problems in trying to decide what water garden feature to have.

The pond is a water feature found in most gardens today in all shapes and sizes and enhanced to the full with added extras to set the scene. Water lilies – bull rushes and reeds are just a few to mention. But it is the under water life that makes the pond more attractive (fish)
Remember when adding a water feature to the garden – take extra precautions in the safety measures where children are concerned.

Water garden features like the pond and the fish also need care and attention. Ponds have to be cleaned regular and fish need to be fed. Questions that crop up from many water garden owners is how to feed the fish – what type of feed should be used – how much and how often. Well the answer to that is there is no real fixed amount of fish food to give.

Of course there are some important issues on what to feed the fish. You have to take into account the fish`s size its appetite and their delicate digestive system which can differ due to water temperature changes.

Beginning from early spring to late autumn you will find the fish very energetic so it will do no harm to feed them every day. If the fish are prepared to take more then so be it. Remember you are not force feeding them so if the fish don`t want to bite then they wont. However, towards the colder months lessen the frequency of feed intake. Sometimes due to the fishs stillness at winter time then no feed is necessary

Try not to instigate problems for your fish`s well being by denying them the right food.

While the fish are in the mood to dine it is best to serve up a dish that will help them to stay active and healthy. Nourishing fish food is highly recommended. Bread/biscuit meal and ants eggs are less nutritional and can cause problems to the digestive system. Floating pellets filled with high-protein are very nutritious. By feeding the fish this way you get to see more of them as they surface for feeding.

Once the garden is the way you have always dreamed of full of foliage -shrubs and sweet scented flowers and of course your water garden feature – then remember that all the surrounding plant growth will attract insects so feeding the fish at this time is not necessary. Natural food supply should start to continue again with pellets in the autumn, this will help perk the fish up in their preparation to face the winter. Repeat pellet feeding in spring it will help the fish recover more rapidly ready for breeding.

Water features and creatures go hand in hand in adding beauty to the garden. Expect toads – newts and frogs to hang out in the pond area. Your water garden has not only given you a garden ornament that the neighbours would die for – it is the thought of giving a home to natures aquatic water life.

Traditionally, bathrooms have been designed to be functional, but have often lacked the style and sophistication that is characteristic of those you see today. Today’s homeowners are investing more money remodeling their bathrooms, turning them into a place for retreat and relaxation.

According to a recent survey, 30 percent of homeowners are spending more than $10,000 on updating and expanding their bathrooms. The results also indicate that the shower/bath is actually what makes a bathroom most distinctive. Gone are the days of installing an all-in-one shower and bath. Instead, in today’s modern bathrooms, separate showers and tubs are making a huge splash.

Whether a jetted whirlpool, custom antique claw-foot tub or infinity bath-the choices are limitless. You can take it one step further by installing your own steam room. The options for showers have increased as well. One simple touch of luxury is as easy as replacing your showerhead. These days, showerheads have increased in size and function. For example, Pegasus now offers an array of unique showerheads that provide an increase in water range and massaging functions, including a fixture with two extension arms and showerheads and its wagon wheel showerhead with 10 pillar sprays.

As homeowners are increasing the size of their bathrooms, they are experimenting with unique fixtures and high-end amenities. To keep up with the trends, manufacturers are now developing vanities and hardware not just for functionality, but to transform the bathroom experience as a whole. In addition to enhancing the look and feel of showers and baths, homeowners are achieving the at-home spa look by installing contemporary lighting, deluxe faucets and heated tile floors.

Surprisingly enough, items you traditionally see in a kitchen, such as granite countertops and stainless steel, are making their way into the bathroom. Although a granite top is a bit pricier than your average vanity, it’s a popular choice for vanities that hold dual, his-and-her sinks, and is a modern alternative to marble.

To complete the spa feel, proper lighting is essential. In order to imitate the atmosphere of a real at-home retreat, soft lighting is key. Chandeliers and wall sconces are fashionable options that come in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles. Also, steer away from the traditional white paints and add a little color to your bath. Color is a simple way to add mood to any room.

Available exclusively at The Home Depot and EXPO Design Center, Pegasus bath products offer luxury styling without extravagant pricing.

If you are looking for bay window treatments, you might consider the following guidelines in choosing the best that your money can afford.

There is no ground rule when it comes to window treatments. Your best bet is to find the kind of treatment that meet the needs of your family, and at the same time will be a beautiful complement to your home design.

The important point is to choose what you like based on your personal taste and preference. Remember to choose window treatments that complement your other home furnishings. They should be coordinated with your home decors, but need not match exactly. With the use of beautiful textures and contrasting colors, you can add spunk and refresh the look and feel of your home.

A lot of simple styles of curtains, valances and shades are available as window dressings. Remember to keep everything in order and balance. Do not overpower the space with the use of contrasting fabrics and colors. Keep everything minimal.

If you are making use of several types of fabrics in a particular room, choose a window treatment that is more subdued or a matching fabric. Simple fabric shades are great for tying together various patterns and colors and they are easy to make.

Using twice the fabric in a given space, whether it is left over material or new material, allows you to cut pieces from different pieces and cover a large, bay window. Remember to cut the fabric slightly larger to make way for seam allowances. If you cut a half to one inch from each side, it should be enough s.

Before shopping for bay window treatments, keep in mind that the treatments should complement your existing home décor. Choose from an array of bay window treatments that suit your taste, furnishings and most of all, your budget.

Spring time comes and with it comes the time to plant your garden. Garden tips range from the type of soil to plant in to ways to water your plants in order to get a full yield. However, when planting grape tomato seeds, the main garden tip is to plant them in a container inside. This will help keep them warm and give them a safe growing environment.

The best garden tip for planting sweet grape tomatoes is to prepare the soil properly. Using a good soil is essential and it doesn’t hurt to beef it up a bit. Depending upon where you live, soil can range anywhere from very fertile to don’t plant here dirt. When living in an area that has dirt that is not ideal for planting, go to a garden store and ask what type of soil they advise. The more fertile the soil, the better the plants will grow. If organic grape tomatoes are what you seek, using ordinary potting soil and an indoor container will keep the insects away and will make the tomatoes pesticide free.

Container gardening will help those who live in apartments or houses without large yards grow tomatoes indoors. These containers range from the average flower pot to multi-plant containers that can hold up to a dozen small plants. Another form of container gardening is to rent or buy a hydroponics system to grow your tomatoes in water. Growing grape tomatoes in a hydroponics system guarantees a completely organic, juicy, and super sweet grape tomatoes. The only problem with using a hydroponics system is finding a way to prop growing tomato plants up while they scale to new heights.

The greatest garden tip that you’ll ever receive is to water your plants. The more water that a tomato contains, the more watering it will need. Tomatoes are approximately ninety percent water and if they are not watered enough they will end up being shriveled and sour. No one likes a sour grape tomato, so keep your tomatoes warm and the soil wet and you’ll have super sweet grape tomatoes growing in no time.

Modern Bathtubs

The bathtubs that one usually sees nowadays or bathtubs that are more commonly used are replete with waste or overflow drains and what’s more taps are mounted on them. These taps could be of the free standing or the built in variety. Till a short time ago, the shape of the bathtubs was starkly rectangular, however, with the advent of acrylic thermoformed bathtubs, you are now offered a variety of shapes.

Bathtubs are available in a variety of colors and a decorative appeal. Today, they have become an intrinsic component, which not only has practical use but also increases the visual appeal of the bathroom. The most common color is white, though you can pick from an array of different colors. It was Scottish born American, by the name of David Dunbar Buick who discovered the process of the enameling cast iron bathtubs.

Bathtubs Styles

There are two major styles of bathtubs around which are configured the various designs of bathtubs. The first one is the western style bathtubs wherein the person who is bathing can lie down. Such bathtubs are more commonly used and generally are shallow and long. The Second style is the eastern style of bathtubs wherein a bather sits up. They are small in size but are deep.

As aforementioned, western style bathtubs are more popular than eastern style bathtubs. While selecting the style not only must you keep your own personal preferences in mind, but also the size of the bathroom. If you want a bathtub, but your bathroom is not large enough, then you might want to go for an eastern style bathtub.

The Claw Foot Bathtub

You might have come across an authentic Claw Foot Bathtub while watching a movie. These bathtubs typically made up of cast iron were once considered an item of great luxury. However, with the advancements in modern technology and the appearance of the acrylic versions of this bathtub, there has been a severe drop in prices of the Claw Foot Bathtub.

The real antique Claw Foot Bathtubs are still a collector’s item and worth quite a bit of money. These are bought, restored, and then installed in a bathroom, but most people these days veer towards the new version of Claw Foot bathtubs that are easily available in the market today.

These bathtubs are available in five major styles.

The Modern Tubs – Hot Tubs and Whirlpool

With the rapid advancement in plumbing technology emerge various types of bathtubs that are not only used for bathing but for the purpose of massage and relaxation as well. You can install these massage bathtubs in your bathroom and get the benefit of a health spa right in your home.

There are typically two types of massage bathtubs that you can choose from – a Water Jet or Whirlpool massage bath tub and an Air massage bath tub.

In an Air massage bathtub, thousand of air bubbles will massage all parts of your body, while you soak inside the tub. In the second instance, jets of water will strike your body, from the various holes on the sides of the bathtub. This will offer you an incomparable body massage and go a long way in invigorating your body.

Once you start your search for a bathtub, you will come to realize the innumerable choices offered to you by the market for bathtubs. Research the market and the prices, as well as the quality, of various bathtubs before making your choice. After all, you are not going to buy a new bathtub again and again.

In order to enjoy your time outdoor, you may have considered garden tables or other patio furniture. In today’s marketplace there are many different options available to suit varying tastes and needs.

Almost every major furniture designer these days has come up with a series of outdoor furniture and you can find garden tables that range in price from moderate to outrageous. The thing that isn’t always as easy to find is the set, that actually appeals to your families needs and tastes. The sad truth is that in today’s market place, most furniture sets are designed for families of four. This leaves little room for larger families or for guests.

If you have more than two children or a large group of friends and family that you spend time with and share meals with quite often, then perhaps you would be wise in limiting your search to larger sets, or purchasing several inexpensive smaller sets of garden tables and scattering them across your yard or patio. This will allow several ‘zones’ where people can talk more intimately than at larger tables, kids can congregate and play games, and or various groups can have their own sense of privacy even among a large group of people.

Garden tables are more than a fashion accessory for our yards these days. We’ve learned that our yard is an extension of our home and we want to be able to enjoy that space as well as we enjoy the interiors of our homes, especially with the premium price that land commands in this day and age. Choose furniture for your lawn and garden that you not only enjoy the look of but that you also find comfortable. You will probably have this furniture for quite a while so it makes sense to make a substantial investment in the furniture that you choose.

When it comes to small kitchen remodeling, there are several things you need to consider. Even before acquiring the services of a professional contractor, or making appliance selection.

More than any other room of the house, the kitchen is the most versatile. It is used to prepare meals, feed the family, store foods, and clean and stow service ware and other household items.

The kitchen is also the family gathering place, the centerpiece of the home. Therefore, it is important that every kitchen remodeling idea be taken into consideration. This is especially true when available space is limited, and kitchen remodeling cost a concern.

Whether you design the kitchen yourself, work with a kitchen remodeling contractor or home center, formulating a plan will be the first step.

Important Things to Consider When Planning Kitchen Design

The first kitchen remodeling tip is to consider the three basic kitchen functions: storage, food preparation, and clean-up. A well-thought out kitchen design will accommodate each of these three functions.

Ease of movement and convenient layout of kitchen design is important. The classic “work triangle” should be the basis of the floor plan. The kitchen sink, refrigerator, and stove, as the three kitchen features used most often, should be arranged in a triangular pattern.

The work triangle concept saves unnecessary steps when preparing foods, and proves the most convenient layout design.

Another kitchen remodeling idea is to incorporate more than one work center so that more than one person can work efficiently in the kitchen at one time. A self-standing chopping block, service island, or other similar kitchen feature will increase convenient work space.

Even when space is very limited, an extra work area can be created by separating the microwave oven and the stove. Provide free counter space at the other end of the kitchen where a cutting board could be placed for food preparation. Enabling a second person to help with mealtime preparation without the two people getting in each other’s way.

Other Considerations

Other considerations for small kitchen remodeling include space-saving built-in appliances whenever possible. Also consider appliances that not only save space, but increase convenience as well: a trash compactor, garbage disposal, and dishwasher, for instance.

Moderately-priced sheet vinyl is the most popular flooring for a kitchen; wood floors and ceramic tile – although more pricey – are also good choices. A qualified, licensed kitchen remodeling contractor is your best resource for expert advice on which type flooring and appliances best suit your budget and space requirements.

Whatever the choice in finish materials, keep room functionality, convenience, and ease of movement in mind when making your selection.

A bath tub is a relaxing thing to have in one’s bathroom. After a very stressful day at work or at school, a person could just retire and relax at the comfort of his/her bath tub. It has proven its usefulness and most people who have it will spend a lot of money to make sure it is working properly and that it stays that way.

However, even if these people loved and took care of the tub, there will still be some problems as the bath tub grows old. Stains and cracks will show. Leaks will appear and faucets will not work. While some of these can be remedied easily, others will require help. Here are some questions most bath tub lover will ask about repairing their bath tubs.

Why Repair a Bath Tub When You Can Just Buy a Replacement?

This question is the most frequently asked question by most bath tub users. Bath tubs costs just around $100 and most of them can afford it. However, when they consider the cost of the demolition, removal and disposal of the tub plus plumbing then add the cost of setting tiles and flooring/carpentry involved, they might have an estimate of about $2000. This cost is too much when a repair will just cost them much less than that.

What is Bath Tub Restoration?

During years of use bath tubs tend to have stains and will probably have scratches here and there. Bath tub restoration includes taking those stains and scratches out. These can be done either by hired help or by yourself. Even though this can be done by untrained people, it is recommended to hire a trained person to do this for your bath tub.

Bath tub restoration involves washing the surface and applying a solvent. It will then be neutralized, etched and sandpapered. Bath tub restoration, when done properly will give your bathroom a new glow, making it look cleaner and brighter.

What is Bath Tub Refinishing?

After bath tub restoration, refinishing must be done to make it last longer and to require you to restore it less than necessary. Refinishing should be done by trained craftsmen as they use a special chemical called Aliphatic Acrylic Polyurethane Enamel. This job can be easily finished in a day so you should have your bath tub in less than a day.

What are Bath Tub Liners and Why Should I Think of Using Them?

Bath tub liners are custom-made to fit your bath tub. These liners will make sure that chipping and scratches on your tub is already history. A new bath tub liner is installed on a bath tub and it can be done a matter of hours. There is no additional cost as the plumbing, flooring and tiles are completely untouched.

Should You Do the Job Yourself or Should You Hire a Specialist?

A specialist will cause you more but repairs on your tub will last longer. Unless you do a very satisfactory job, it is recommended to ask for a specialist’s help as the cost of hiring one is worth than the cost of doing it again and the inconvenience it will bring you.

When Should I Consider Buying a New Tub?

Buying a new bath tub is only recommended when the total cost estimated by the specialist will cost you more than buying and reinstalling a new tub, then go for a new tub.
