If things are starting to look a bit drab and you arent the only thing thats tired in your bedroom, its time to refresh. Updating a bedroom with modern bedding is fast, easy and fun. After all, you change your sheets at least once a week and make the bed every day, so if you replace those mundane sheets or boring comforter with something new, everything looks different!

So lets talk about different how far out there do you want to go? Maybe you want to take a walk on the wild side with zebra print bedding or perhaps a safari is not really your style. Tommy Bahama has some palm frond bedding that will get you in vacation mode every night of the week and the Nautica line of bedding has the preppy east coast summer style covered. You may not be summering in Nantucket but it can feel that way when you slip between the sheets.

Perhaps a stroll though the English countryside is more to your liking the Laura Ashley home line will have you picking flowers while you count sheep. Known for marvelous floral prints, Laura Ashley bedding is simply divine.

Maybe modern and theme-specific bedding is not your thing and you just want a change check out Croscill. These folks make it super easy because they started the notion of coordination from bedding to bath, they figure it all out, design it to mix, match and coordinate so all you need do is pick what you like and take it home. Now thats easy.

For many of us, storage space within the home seems to be at a premium most of the time. Although the majority of homes include a large number of closets, they always seem to be full. The truth is, most home owners only use about one-third to two-thirds of their closet space. Because closets are designed vertically, there remains a lot of room even in closets that seem the most crowded as there is a lot of the area that contains only air. Depending on the location of the closet, there are many ways that you can maximize the storage capacities of your household closets.

Bedroom closets are the first type of closet that comes to mind. Bedroom closets usually contain most of our clothes. Clothes are a major space taker in a closet, but they can be reduced so that your closet has more capacity. One way to add to the space for storage within your closet is to use or add additional shelves. Most bedroom closets will include a shelf at the top that can be useful for storing boxes and other smaller items such as underwear and socks. There are many accessories available that can add to your storage capacity as well. Closet organizer hang vertically but contain several vertical compartments that are useful for storing clothing items that can be folded such as pants and T-shirts. You can also buy apparatus that hangs from the main bar in your closet, and is essentially a second bar. This is used to hang more clothing on. The idea of both of these pieces of equipment is to fully utilize the vertical space in your closet.

Other closets in your house are probably used for a variety of storage purposes, for games, books, food, and seasonal clothing. All of these shelves are useful in that they are ready for additional shelving to be incorporated, giving them some extra capacity. There are several different types of shelves for this purpose. One is the bracket shelving style. This type of shelf is easily adjustable due to the many slots on the mount into which the metal bracket is placed. The flexibility offered by these shelves is great, but they tend to be unreliable in terms of stability, and you may find yourself knocking the shelves themselves over gain and again. A more complex process in terms of installation, but a much more reliable model when it comes to stability, are installed wooden shelves with ledges. These shelves have to be measured carefully on installation, or they will be useless to you. The mounts are merely ledges nailed into the wall, the shelves sized planks that fit on top of the ledges. The whole project requires some attention to detail, and you lose the flexibility offered by bracket shelves, but they are a much more stable model.

There are a few ways to maximize the closet space in your home, depending on the use of the closet and the degree of stability and effort you want to put into it. Wooden shelves on mounts are the best way to go for a closet that needs stability, such as a pantry or game shelf, while mount and bracket styles are best for closet with goods of variable sizes that are prone to reorganization.

Wreaths are sometimes thought of as a Christmas-only decoration. This is a short-sighted view, as a beautiful wreath can be used to decorate a home for any season. Wreaths made to celebrate the autumn months can be very attractive home decorations.

Autumn wreaths often attempt to take the most beautiful elements of the fall season and to combine them in one artistic statement. They will often feature the striking colors of fall foliage and often reflect an “outdoors” or “country” look.

Autumn wreaths can be based on any number of foundations. Some have found the rustic and neutral look of a grapevine wreath makes a perfect foundation for an autumn wreath. Others may prefer to work from a woodier twig base. It is even possible to start with a basic wreath form (often made of foam and available at craft and hobby stores). Whatever option is used can work wonderfully as a springboard for beautiful fall decorating.

Autumn wreaths can be made from the season’s fallen leaves. Such projects, although beautiful, are short-lived as the leaves dry and crack. As such, many wreath makers rely upon silk and other artificial leaves to decorate their wreaths. Accents are often provided by simple homemade bows. Small seasonal decorations (for instance a miniature scarecrow) are sometimes attached to the finished product with a glue gun as a way of commemorating the autumn months.

There are no rules or limits one must obey when creating an autumn wreath. The idea is to capture the essence of autumn in the wreath, and that can be accomplished in any number of ways. An autumn wreath is an exercise in creativity and many beautiful decorations have been produced around the theme.

Wreaths are not exclusively for the Christmas holidays. A decorative wreath can brighten any home, and wreaths celebrating autumn provide a unique opportunity to bring the essence of the outdoors into one’s home.

You have always been envious of your neighbors’ spruced up garden by the yard. Flowers and lush shrubs abound in their tiny nook of paradise. You ask yourself why you never get to have that kind of garden. And, you usually dismiss such wondering with lines like “I don’t have a green thumb!” or “I can’t afford a gardener or a professional landscaper,” which are both lame alibis.

If you want your yard to look regal with a simple but well-maintained garden, you only need two things – determination and the know-how of such an endeavor. Psyche yourself to muster such will that would consequently urge you to look for sources of information on how to go about it.

For your own gardening happiness, here’s a rundown of tips on how to make your gardening by the yard endeavor a very rewarding one.

1. Deadheading

One good rule of the green thumb is to keep your border free from wilted flowers and dried leaves. Deadheading or removing dead flowers’ heads will promote the blooming of your plants. Some perennials such as phlox, daylily, and Lady’s Mantle get their growth jumpstarted by deadheading.

2. Prune selectively

It is a must to shorten the size of your annuals through selective pruning. This will help the plants to grow more.

3. Pinch out tops.

Certain plants respond when their tops get pinched out. Such plants include Coleus (a foliage plant) and herbs.

4. Fertilize lightly.

A minimal amount of fertilizer will further boost the growth of your vegetation. If you water your yard frequently, you have to fertilize it more regularly because of nutrient depletion.

5. Weed out.

This is one of the best ways to preserve the beauty of your garden by the yard. Moreover, removing weeds also provide better absorption of the soil’s nutrients. If you can’t help but use herbicide, do this safely and make sure that other plants don’t get affected.

6. Water them well

One good tip when it comes to watering your garden by the yard is to do it for shorter periods of time, more often. It will do well if you increase your frequency of watering a bit come summer time. But doubling the time you water your plants will do more harm than good, e.g. erosion.

7. Say no to chemicals

Chemical is just as bad to plants as it is with humans. So better avoid using it as a pesticide. Physical pest controls or other alternatives are better options.

With these simple tips, soon enough you won’t have to go green with envy with your neighbor’s spectacular garden by the yard.

Are you looking to get the classic French style in your home, well dont worry you dont have to speak French to get the style. Its not hard to get the style, just take a look at the following directions.

Used, worn, imperfect but beautifully architectural elements and accessories are what French country style is about. They dont have to have sleek lines, fine china or grey, white, and black colors. They have chunky wood tables, flowers, brightly patterned couches, curtains and pillows styled after the look of Provence, which borders the Mediterranean Sea.

If youre looking to grasp the French look, you should look for things like cracked wood beams, curved panels, hand-carved decorations and raw material flooring and walls, like stone or bricks. Uneven plaster walls or raw distressed wood can also give you the French Country atmosphere.

In the style having a spider crack in the paint or slight discoloration of the paint just adds character. So dont fret about fixing all those imperfections.

Some architectural features are shutters for your windows, narrow deeply cut window sills, and striped fabric awnings over windows which prevents the heat from escaping.

But if you just want a little bit of French flare to your house without too much change to youre walls and floors. You can look for rustic furniture, oversized rectangle or round wooding dining room tables with a dull waxed or natural finish. Dining room chairs have a ladderback style or vertical slats to it.

If youre looking to get chairs or random tables you should look for curved or boast carved designs in the woodwork. Also, large armoires go well with the theme, giving you a place to store dishes, linens clothes or whatever you desire.

The next step would be to adorn your house with fabrics and accessories. You should use toile material, a gauzy linen or cotton, in white, cream or yellow with bright contrasting colors. You can choose themes like monkeys, eighteenth century courting scenes and Chinese patterns which are dominate French designs.

Also look for large, thickly woven baskets, chunky clay or old metal pitchers, iron garden shelving units, and Chinese pottery all fit in with the French theme. Which means you can get ceramic plates, tiles, tablecloths and curtains that have either roosters, sunflowers, lavender or beetles. You can save some money if you get these at flea markets and antique stores.

The final touches would be flowers. Fresh flowers would be ideal, flowers such as lavender, geraniums and sunflowers are great to give you the French country style youre looking for.

You can put the flowers in copper pots, window boxes, glass vases or old pitchers. You should use a variety of colors and make the arrangements not too simple or stylized. Another country French look is natural grasses.

It doesnt matter if you want to go all out or just change a few things in your house to achieve the French country look. You can use any of these idea to get a little of Provence country into youre house.

Attic insulation is designed to keep heat in your home in the winter and out of your home in the summer. Heat rises and, in the winter, any air that is heated by your furnace goes up and out through your attic. In the summer, your roof becomes very hot and, with no place for the hot air to go, your attic can become the hottest space in your home. Without attic insulation, that heat would quickly get into your home.

So attic insulation is probably the most important insulation in your home. The type of insulation you choose is also important because they are not all created equal.

Fibreglass batt insulation is probably the most popular type of insulation for attics. It is easily installed by homeowners and it fits perfectly between the joists of your ceiling. Installers need to be careful to make sure that the batts fit every crevice and corner snugly or a lot heat will get through the gaps.

Moisture in your attic will reduce the degree of insulation you get from fibreglass batts. Any leaks, condensation problems or other sources of moisture must be fixed before installing batt insulation.

Loose-fill fibreglass and cellulose is another popular type of insulation for attics. Spread by hand or with a blower, loose-fill insulation can be blown into corners and hard to reach areas, so there is less of a problem with gaps. However, moisture also damages the fibreglass and cellulose in loose fill and you must fix all moisture problems before installation.

Spray foam is an increasingly popular type of insulation for attic applications. Not only does it get into hard to reach places, it expands to fill every gap and hole, so heat cant pass through spaces in the insulation.

Spray foam is also waterproof and often, because it expands, it will stop small moisture leaks. Condensation isnt a problem because of how well spray foam seals your attic.

Other spray foam benefits include support for the structure of your house, fewer airborne pollution and irritants in your home, and less outside noise.

With the hustle and bustle associated with daily life in the 21st century, many people have become intensely interested in developing a living environment at home that is soothing, calming and peaceful. Towards this end, an ever growing number of people have come to recognize and appreciate the benefits of gardens. Indeed, the life enhancing benefits of plants and flowers is significant.

As a consequence of an increasing segment of the population who expresses an interest in developing that perfect home garden — complete with lush plants and colorful flowers — many people are faced with the question of whether they should plant and create their own garden spaces or whether they should call in a landscaping professional.

In considering whether to “do it yourself” (when it comes to creating a garden and undertaking landscaping) or whether to hire a professional, there are pros and cons to be found on both sides of the proverbial fence. Of course, as mentioned previously, the 21st century is a point in time when many, many people maintain very full schedules. In other words, they simply do not have the time to spend creating that prefect garden or landscape for their homes. Obviously, for such men and women, a professional landscape artist provides the perfect solution.

On the other hand, precisely because life is rushed for so many people, gardening can be a great release and relief. People can obtain a much needed break from the machinations of their daily schedules by spending quality time working the soil, planting flowers and tending to garden plots and patches generally.

You may be one of those people who would like to undertake the creation of your own flower and plant gardens on your own. However, you may feel that you lack the necessary “green thumb” to develop an eye-catching and visually appealing landscape. If that is the case, if you are a person who would like to take up the creation of flower gardens and landscaping on your own but feel you need some guidance, help and assistance is available.

There are now a group of gardening and landscaping professionals available to consult with you in the development and creation of attractive outdoor scenes. These consultants work hand in hand with you; they provide definitive expertise and assistance in aiding you in the design and implementation of an attractive landscape complete with stunning flower gardens and vibrant greenery.

In the final analysis, there are benefits to be had both by understaking your own gardening and landscaping course or by calling in the aid of a gardening consultant or a full-service landscaping operator. When all is said and done, you will end up with gardens and landscaping that you will make you proud and that will make your home all the more appealing.

Thinking of remodeling or renovating your kitchen? Here are a few tips for preparation and avoiding common pitfalls.

If you have a large kitchen remodeling project you will need to set up a temporary kitchen a different part of the house. It’s important that the location you choose is convenient and have unrestricted access to water and allow you to keep foods refrigerated as well as heat foods up. It’s also a good idea to have easy access to portable cooking appliances such as a microwave, electric wok and electric frying pan. Daily life must go on and you don’t want to be eating take-out every night or running to the neighbours house every time you need something from the refrigerator.

Here are the Top 5 Most Common Mistakes in Kitchen Remodeling:

1. Damaging the wall as you remove old cabinets

2. Damaging bench tops, cabinets or floors you plan to re-use

3. Not shutting down utilities before starting your project

4. Allowing dust and debris to spread throughout the house

5. Not allowing enough time to complete your project

Before You Get Started

1. Box and seal everything that will not be used in your temporary kitchen. Label the boxes and store them in a different part of the house.

2. Remove anything from the kitchen that isn’t nailed or screwed down. This includes drawers, lazy susans, spice racks, wall clocks, art work, ornaments, pots and pans etc. Place a protective cover over anything that must remain in place while you are working.

3. Make arrangements for the removal of any rubbish that may accumulate during your remodeling project. If you must rent a dumpster, do so in plenty of time or have a utility on hand for removing the rubbish to the dump. If you plan to salvage the old cabinetry for a workshop or donation to a charitable cause, have a place ready for them to go as you take them out of your work area.

4. Before removing any major appliances, turn off all utilities. This can be done at the individual shut off valves for gas and water. If there are no shut off valves, you will have to turn off the main valve. The main gas valve is usually located near the gas meter. Remember that, once you turn off the gas to the whole house, ALL pilot lights will have to be relit before they will work again. Without very careful planning you may well find yourself without hot water when you’re ready to clean up after a hard day’s work.

5. Disconnect fuses or turn off circuits to the area in which you will be working. In older homes, the wiring may have been modified over the years and it may not be clear which circuits or fuses control specific areas. If you are unsure, turn off the main power or get contact an electrician. Never take a chance with electricity! In addition, tape over the breakers so they won’t be turned on inadvertently. If you plan on upgrading your electrical system and adding new outlets and fixtures, it will be necessary to dismantle all existing outlets and fixtures.

6. Remove all light bulbs. Then, dismantle each fixture by using a screwdriver to unscrew the plate and the receptacle and pull the receptacle out of the box. Put wire nuts on any exposed wires for the interim. The bare copper wire is the ground and does not need to be capped.

Kitchen remodeling can be a rewarding and satisfying experience by planning right and avoiding the pitfalls.

Energy efficient homes that go easy on the environment are turning heads in Georgia with their low-maintenance appeal, cost efficiency and natural good looks. With Georgia Tech’s recent success in the 2007 Solar Decathlon and world-class community projects like Atlantic Station, Metro Atlanta is well on its way to being a model of eco-building in the Southeast.

Georgia’s green power was most recently demonstrated by Georgia Tech at the 2007 Solar Decathlon. The innovative contest, sponsored by the US department of energy, is a green building competition with an emphasis on solar energy. Twenty teams from universities all over the world were handed the task of building the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home they could imagine.

Over the five day judging period, the Decathlon Homes had to demonstrate the ability to use nothing but solar energy to power a washer dryer, oven, TV, computer and generate hot water. The homes also had to be architecturally sound, marketable and they had to look good.

Though it was their first year to participate in the contest, the Georgia Tech team won 6th place for their innovative light-house, a completely off-the-grid solar powered home. First place went to a team from Darmstadt Tech in Germany. Though the Georgia Tech team didn’t take home first place this year, the house is part of the significant contribution that that Atlanta’s architects and engineers are making to what we know about building smart.

“Many of the advances that are demonstrated in this house will come to the mainstream,” said associate professor Russell Gentry of the Georgia Tech house, “they will have to come to the mainstream if we’re going to save the energy that we promised to.”

The innovations in the Georgia Tech house set a new standard for energy efficiency and eco- friendliness for Atlanta homes. Atlanta already has a number of model solar projects like the EcoManor, the Southern Living Idea House, and the Brookhaven Zero Energy Home.

“35% of the energy consumed in the US is consumed in buildings. It’s important for us to develop technologies that save that energy,” says Gentry. “Everything we do here is about making buildings more energy efficient and smarter.”

The Georgia Tech Light House is steel and wood construction with a modern open floor plan, hardwood flooring, and a semi-transparent solar roof that subtly lets lights into every room in the house while it insulates and generates power. Designed to be easy to build, expandable and accessible, the plans accommodate from one to three bedrooms and up to two baths. The cost of the prototype is $280K.
