There’s nothing nicer than a pile of freshly washed handtowels in the bathroom, especially when you’re hosting guests. These thick linen towels, trimmed with brightly coloured ribbon or lace, are a contemporary alternative to the traditional monogrammed look.

What you will need

1 x 60cm x 30cm piece of linen per towel;
Dressmakers’ pins;
Sewing machine ;
Thread (white and coloured);
Iron;
35cm length of ribbon, lace or braid per towel

How to sew the handtowel

Pin and sew a 1.5cm rolled hem around all four sides of the linen to make the towel. Press the hem.
Pin a length of ribbon, braid or rickrack along the bottom, short edge of the towel. Turn the towel over when you get to the end and pin along the reverse side as well.
Use thread in a matching colour to sew the trimming onto the towel, tucking the loose ends of the trim in neatly as you go. Snip the threads and press the towel.

Dyed lace

If you can’t find the trim you want, you can dye 100 per cent cotton lace to your desired shade for a bright, modern trim. As part of Hard Rock Las Vegas’ resort-wide remodel, Las Vegas design firm Chemical Spaces was commissioned to design several one-of-a-kind pool suites intended to accommodate VIP guests of the resort. Local designer Mark Tracy, Chemical Spaces’ owner and principal design consultant, designed and oversaw installation of the individual suites.

The suites were designed with the intent to cater to Hard Rock’s young, hip, and music-oriented guests. With each suite boasting a unique theme/motif, the suites each walk out to the newly-designed Hard Rock pool and bring a new element to the Hard Rock resort.

Swedish architecture firm visiondivisionhas created this amazing project “the Peak Series,” pre-fabricated summer houses that allows a great portion of social life on a relatively small space. While being a comfortable vacation home for a family it can also easily accommodate a large amount of guests thanks to a sleeping mezzanine floor.The house is pyramidal in its shape with a wood façade with a gap between each board allowing climbing.

Divided into three floors, the middle level is the sleeping mezzanine, where a large number of guests can be accommodated. It is sandwiched between the open social first floor with a kitchen and living room, and the upper level which houses the master bedroom with bathroom.

Each guest bed can be reached through a private entrance hatch, that can be accessed from the house’s exterior. The hatches also act as individual fire escapes and provide a nice view of the surrounding landscape from one’s bed. The upper floor has hatches from the bedroom and bathroom. The pre-fabricated summer houses are available in two sizes: 45 m2 and 90 m2.

Each guest bed has a private entrance hatch accessed from the house’s exterior. These hatches apart from being useful during fire emergency also provide a great view of the surrounding landscape. The houses are extremely airy, and are available in two sizes: 45 m2 and 90 m2. Initially available for Scandinavian countries, Vision Division has plans to design adaptable structures for different climes.

Cold weather means comfort food and a call to duty for your roasting pan. Although shiny when new, stainless steel can look dull and mottled over time and develop rust-coloured stains, usually caused by caramelised pan juices stubbornly adhering to the surface. A metal sourer is not the answer, as it will cause unsightly scratches. Dishwashing powder is also terribly unkind to stainless steel, so hand washing in hot soapy water after use is the only safe route to take.

Restore the shine to a roasting pan

When it comes to removing rust-coloured stains, mix bicarb soda and distilled white vinegar into a thick paste. Apply to the stain with a kitchen cloth and scrub in a circular motion, adding more vinegar if the paste becomes too dry. It does take time, but the results are more than rewarding. Follow with a rinse in warm water and towel dry.

Israeli industrial-design internship programme d-Vision, founded in 2005 by multinational plastics manufacturer Keter, presented its latest project, ‘On/Off’, at this year’s SaloneSatellite in Milan. The 2010 ‘class’ of 15 design graduates addressed the issues of energy consumption and technology in lighting by creating a series of pieces that use LED in an innovative and compelling way. The brief, says curator Ezri Tarazi, was ‘to tell a story in each object in a simple and clear way that will surprise the viewer’.

Work presented included ‘Draw me a lamb(p)’ by David Keller, a highly graphic piece that cleverly takes a cue from the two-dimensional representation of light rays (in short, lines) often found in children’s drawings of the sun and other light sources; ‘Pola’ pendant light by Etay Amir, which uses Styrofoam as both form-giving material for the lamp, while also functioning as its own packaging; and ‘Still light’, an LED system powered by the electrochemical reaction of copper and zinc electrodes placed in tomatoes, which makes the case for low energy use in a modest, yet powerful way.

Today Saint Etienne Art School graduates Rémi Bouhaniche and Amaury Poudray – together they are the Lyon based design studio USIN-e – celebrate the opening of their exhibition ‘Prelude’. Together with The Gallery they produced this limited edition of furniture and accessories, which will be showcased for the first time. The fragile and artfully composed objects are made from thin steel frames and flexible rattan mats.

The exhibition will be open until 12 June 2010 at The Gallery, Rue de l’Ecole Moderne, 17, 1070 Brussels, Belgium
