The Making : Bloom Winx Club Cake

Heya folks! I'm honestly excited about today's post. It's one of my favourite work on cakes and it's a fairy cake! Bloom from the Winx Club fairy to be exact. Last year I swore off on figurines..but at last grew to love them especially on cakes such as this one. The main features of this cake are the wings which is made of gelatine and the upper half of the fairy body which is fully made of gum paste. So let's get right on it..:)

The first thing I needed to do was figure out how to make the wings. I did some research on the internet and youtube and found out that I can make wings out of gelatine. So here I diluted some gelatine with a little water and the the coloured some of it with some blue and pink colour gel paste.

Before that I drew a sketch of the wings that the client wanted.

Here I took a plastic projection sheet, put it on top of my sketch and proceeded to drop a little bit of diluted gelatine unto it and spread it with a toothpick. This process was repeated until the whole sketch design was completed. I took almost an hour or so doing one wing.

This is how it looked like once done.

I had to leave this to completely dry for about 2- 3 hours on the plastic sheet. Once dry, I lifted up the wings slowly and careful not to tear the fragile gelatine sheet. That required a lot of patience on my part!

Okay so here you see my figurine.. okay okay I know what you are thinking.. the boobs are too big..the Winx fairies don't really look like that :)..but there's a reason for those ample bosoms...I'll tell you later heheh..Anyway I put toothpicks in the shoulders and propped it up on my sugar beads containers until it dried into shape..this took several days.

Once dried, I started painting the facial features.

Lovely blue eyes..

Outlined the eyes with some black colour and some pink eyeshadow. All this detailed painting made me resolve to buy some fine brushes for my figurine next project. It was hard to get it really tidy with a normal brush. All colours were mixed with a bit of clear vanilla flavouring to thin the gel colour paste.

Added a little disco dust to the eyeshadow..

Here I did the lashes..

..and a few white dots on the black of the eyes..to add some sparkle to them..:)

Some peach blush on the cheeks too!

Here I made some orangey hair for her..and the face was practically done.

Then I covered her body with some blue fondant and stuck on some glitter dust to make the top stand out. I was beginning to love her a lot..:)

This cake you see here is the base on which the fairy cake will stand on.

This here is her 'gown'. The cake was a moist butter cake layered and filled with blueberry jam and buttercream..yumm..

Then I covered it with a blue fondant base.

Then I stuck on layer upon layer of blue frilly fondant strips...making folds so that it will look like a flowy gown..

Made some purple frills to add to her bust.

Completed the look with some more details.

So here's where the boobs came in handy. I made her arms and rested them on them jugs until they dried. I think this post has the most mention of boobs compared to all my other posts. :P Kinda funny...

I used a cookie pop stick to hold up her torso..

Here I stuck her torso into the top of the gown skirt to finish the whole look.

Added some pink glitter to the pink part of the gown..I basically used a nice picture of Bloom as a guide on how to make her whole look.

It was time to add on the wings and I was excited to see how this would finally look. First I glued on some pink gum paste on her back and stuck the wings on either side. I didn't mind that it looked a bit funny with that blob of gum paste on the back because that will soon be covered with more hair. LOOOOVED IT!

I took a white styrofoam block and put it behind the wings to show you that it was see through. I also loved that it was shiny and fluterred in the wind...like a real fairy wing..well ..'real' as in like in my fantasy world of big boobied fairies...okayy..that didn't sound right..hmm..

Anywhooo..I added her fringe..

This is one way of making hair..just cutting of strips of fondant and lining the 'hair' details with a tool.

Glued them on her head covering that pink fondant blob on her back...added some highlights too.

Ahh..I just fell in love with her.. she's a beaute..

A long post but soooo worth it. So much detail and love went into this cake..which is usually the case with my cakes but I was particularly proud of this one. I was no longer scared of making figurines. I hope you guys enjoyed this post! See ya!!

The Making: Giant Cupcake in buttercream

Giant cupcake! Yup that's what I'm gonna show you today. Honestly I don't do much buttercream cakes because I mostly get requested to make fondant covered cakes, so on the rarity that I do get an order like this, I get kinda nervous. First of all, buttercream well..it's tricky..You've got to get the right consistency to produce the effect that you want. Second of all, you've got to get the right flavour according to your clients needs. There are many types of buttercream. There's American buttercream, Swiss meringue buttercream, Italian buttercream etc...hmm how come there's no Malaysian buttercream? Perhaps I should invent one. :) Anyway different buttercreams offer different levels of sweetness and texture. Most Malaysians don't like their cakes too sweet but in our humid and hot weather, they also would like if their cakes don't melt as easily.

Now like I said this is tricky. In order for buttercream to hold up a design, it needs quite a lot of powdered sugar in it and American buttercream seems to be the best choice in this case. That being said, the frosting then can end up being quite sweet. So when a customer says to me, "I don't want the frosting to be too sweet", I really have to scratch my head. (not this customer la but most of them). The only thing I can end up saying is that I can only adjust the sweetness in the cake itself. The only way I can cut down the sweetness in the frosting is by adding a bit of salt. Otherwise it is impossible to pipe. Otherwise I would suggest Swiss meringue buttercream, which is pipable but will not hold up well in hot weather. Well, you win some, you lose some.:) Aaaanyway let's start then..

Okay so giant cupcake. I really didn't have a mold for this so I went and bought this beauty. It's made of sillicone so it was pretty easy to get the cake out.

I then made some American buttercream which is basically made of powdered sugar and butter of course. I just added a little shortening to make sure that it was more stable and pipable in order to hold the shape of the rosettes. Of course a little salt to cut down the sweetness. Then I slathered the buttercream on the cake to form a crumbcoat and another layer to make it pretty. Here's the thing, and another reason why buttercream irks me a bit...being the perfectionist that I am, I will take AGES just doing this initial step. I see a dent and I get all flustered and want to smooth it over and over again. In other words, I find buttercream cakes are much harder than fondant at times..(okay MOST of the time).

Anyway, once I finally got that done. I practiced my rosettes. I mixed one part of the buttercream with some peach gel coloring.Then I put half of each the colored and non colored into a piping bag complete with 1M tip. Pressed and swirled it from the middle to outwards until I got the size that I wanted.

Once I was satisfied with the rosette that came out, I was ready to attack the giant cupcake wooooooOoo!

So I forgot to take step by step pics on how I arranged the rosettes on the giant cupcake.But here you can see the little star buttercream borders that I piped.

And here you can see how I piped the rosettes on the cupcakes itself. I made 3 colours, peach, maroon and natural buttercream

I made the cut out messages and put it on a fondant cut out decorated with pink polka dots.

Then I made these twizzlers ( yeah I made that word up) a string of pink and a string of peach..

..then you 'twizzle' them together..

By the way, I made the board myself. I got some matching wrapping paper and covered the board with it and covered it again with a sticky plastic sheet. It really made the cake come all together. Giant buttercream cupcake was a success! Toodeloo folks!

The Making : Scuba dude cake: II

Welcome to Scuba dude cake II ! I made an earlier blog post on the first Scuba cake here. This post is a more refined version of the latter and includes little underwater figurines such as the cute turtle you see above. Well let's get on to it!

First we make the sea/ocean fondant using the marbling technique of some white fondant with a much larger amount of blue fondant. Roll 'em together and what do you get? Bippity-Boppity Boo! (Sorry I just watched Disney's Cinderella earlier with my daughter lol!)

Here's the cake with fondant all smoothed over

So the first thing I do is of course the figurine...this time I made him hugging the cake at the edge as if he's reaching out to something..

I wanted to make him look as if he was flippin' his flip flaps flippity flapping away in the ocean. Made a liitle fondant ball to maintain his position while he 'dries'.

While waiting, I made his sidekick, the turtle. I'll call him Mr. Cowabunga. Here is Mr. Cowabunga's head all shaped with a smile on his face.

Then I inserted his dark brown eyes into the sockets..added some realistic looking eyelids and eyebags too(kinda looking similar to mine after all this cake making..).

Then I made his "boomerang' shaped legs and sandwiched it between two green oval shaped fondant pieces.

To make his shell, once again I used the marbling technique by mixing a little light brown fondant and a pinch of black fondant for that realistic colour.

Then using the dresden tool, I made grooves on his shell and stuck it on his back.

I also made the message.

Here's scuba dude II all geared up with his SCUBA and positioned to 'almost' touch Mr. Cowabunga.

More views of Scuba dude II. I always put strips of tissue to help me maintain fondant pieces position while it dries. Here I'm using the tissues to make sure his breathing spout doesn't stick to his head.

Then I made the corals. These ones look like "Ham Chim piang" for some reason.(It's a local pastry here in Malaysia for those who don't know..it's like a flattened doughnut without sugar or a whole in it) I just poked little indents unto the fondant. Btw, I'm using fondant mixed with CMC here so that it hardens faster than just fondant alone.

Then I dusted some chocolate powder to give it a realistic look.

I tapped the excess and they were done!

Next I made the underwater seaweed. I just twisted around some green fondant strips.

Then I made these babies..no idea what kind of coral they are. Here you see it drying into shape.

Then there were these ones..

Just scrunched them up at the middle..

These I've done on the previous scuba cake...

Combined both corals to make this..

Well once again I used tissues to maintain the 'sea donut's shape while attached to the side of the cake.

Let's make fishies..here's one complete with scales made using my 'smiley' tool.

Then there's this gorgeous orange thingy..

I brushed some silver dusting powder on my fish..kinda looks like an Arawana fish..hold on that's a clear water fish not a sea water one..oh well...

I finished up the whole bottom of the ocean look with some 'sand' using some brown sugar.

Now it's Mr. Dolphin time.

..gave him a smile..

..stuck on his eyes..and brushed on some silver dust..

The Making: Harley Davidson Dude Cake

Vroom Vrooomm! Harley Bike enthusiasts will love this one. So here it goes!

First I made the torso, the bod of the bike and the tires.

Here you see the handle bars set to dry. Yup I use anything that lies around the house to get the shape that I want. In this case I used a clean mug.

Here's the bike after painting it with some silver.

Meanwhile, I made the facial features of the lucky birthday guy.

Then I attached his extremities.

...gave him a good ol' thumbs up!

Next up, the logo. I printed it out and did the pin prick method to mark it on fondant and cut them out.

Here you see the logo done.

It looked great on black fondant.

Next up, the fire trails around the cake,

Here I sprayed the yellow fondant with orange mist from Wilton to give a flame-y look.

Then attached it to the side of the cake.

Finalised all the painting details for the bike.

Showcase : Kaamatan Cupcakes

Hi! A lot of you may not know this but I come from a Borneon heritage. I am Kadazan mixed with Iban. This project was very close to my heart as it represented my race and traditions. These cupcakes were for a Kaamatan event for friends here in KL. Kaamatan is a traditional celebration of Kadazans in Sabah to celebrate the rice harvest. What you see here is the representation of all things Kaamatan from the paddy harvest, gong,annual beauty queen Unduk Ngadau , musical instrument the sompoton, bamboo for dancing, the head gear "sigah", traditional ladies costume, siopon for rice wine and of course Mount Kinabalu, our pride and joy. Basically I'm just showcasing how I did the cupcake toppers.

Here are the cupcakes packed beautifully ready to be sold.

The Making : Triathlon Cake with gum paste bicycle

Hi! I love making cakes that are beautiful but I love it even more when I get to make cakes that are not only cute but also challenging. The 'challenge' in this cake is of course the bicycle you see here. So here's how I did it. :)

First I found a nice pic or drawing of the bike that my client wanted. It was a replica of her boyfriend's bike. Apparently he is quite the sportsman and was and active triathlete. Here I shaped the flower wires in a circle to resemble the tyres on the bike. Then I wrapped black coloured gum paste around them.

Here I made the handlebars.

Using wire cutters, I cut the wires to form the spindles on the bike tyres.

Here, I just pieced the gum paste bike parts together using the pic as a guide.

The tricky part was getting them to stick together without having it falling apart and trust me it did that A LOT!

After that I painted on the details and left in leaning on a container to set and dry.

The client also wanted the exact helmet that her boyfriend had.

Here you see it coloured and detailed.

Next up was also a client's request and she wanted his jogging shoes as well. Here I show how I did it step by step.

Next up were the goggles and speedos to represent the swimming. I thought the speedos added a touch of funny actually. Very cute!

Here's how I made the bushes and "road".

I used the cobblestone imprint mat to create an area where the bike would "park" by leaning on the cake.

The Making : Hi-5 themed cake

1..2..3..4..HI-5!! Omg..you don't know how many thousands of times I've heard this song in this short span of being mommy..my two year old loves this Australian band and because of that I decided to make it the theme for her second birthday this year :)

For those who don't know, this is the cartoon version of the Hi-5 band so I based the figurines on them.

These are the girl figurines sans face and clothing

and these are the guys..my favourite is Tim by the way..yeah I'm referring to the second batch of Hi-5ers..They have new members now apparently.. how do I know this? I can't help it, my daughter DEMANDS for the DVDs to be shown everyday and I must admit that I'm a fan too..bahaha..silly stalker mom..

Next up, the clothing and the details that goes with it. This is Fely.

Then the hair..

More details..this is Lauren by the way..I did the rest of the figurines the same way and basically referred to the cartoon pics all the time.

I also wanted to make Jup Jup the annoying creature that stalks Fely in the show. I made his legs using rice crispy treats.

Oooh but we must talk about the cake. These are the new premium flavours that I will introduce soon. This is coconut cake with blueberry and cream cheese filling.

This.. my lovelies is an oreo layer cake which has crushed oreos in two layers of chocolate cake sandwiching a vanilla cake (also with crushed oreos) with cream cheese filling between the layers with..yeah you guessed it..CRUSHED OREOS!!

Then I slather on that wondrous chocolate ganache..mmmehhmmm

Anywhoo..this is Jup Jup all covered with purple fondant. He's made up of butter walnut cake :)

I gave him a face here

Then I stuck on some rice crispy treats on some toothpicks and covered them with green and purple fondant.

I just poked them into Jup Jup's head like so..

There, a full head of ..urmm..hair..

Then I prepared the legs the same way too.

Next up is another favorite character on the show called Ms. Chatterbox or Chatz. Here you see her neck which is covered in yellow fondant and is appropriately made up of a delightfully fresh lemon cake with lemon curd filling.

Here you see the crushed oreo cake as Chatz's box and I put my 6" pan there to estimate the placement of Chatz's neck. I don't describe here much details on how I did Chatz's facial features but I think it's pretty straightforward as seen here.

Next is the round cake with colourful hands all over the cake. I found these cute hand shaped cutters at my bakery supply shop and I had to get them for this cake!

Then I made the Hi-5 logo

Not my finest work,,but it was a personal cake so..what the heck!

Here I made a Happy Birthday message using gum paste and sticking some silver glitter on the individual alphabets.

This is where I placed the figurines. here you can see Tim, Lauren and Casey.

Here's the pic of the combined cakes at my daughter's party. All and all there were 5 flavours so it was really a challenge in the sense that I had to bake so many flavours at once! There was coconut cake with blueberry cream cheese filling, lemon cake with lemon curd filling, butter walnut cake with mocha buttercream, funfetti cake (vanilla cake with colourful sprinkles baked into it) with raspberry buttercream and last but not least the crushed oreo cake with crushed oreo cream cheese filling!...faint...

The Making: Tweety Bird Cake

Hello there HMC fans! Aiseyyy..seriously I should get a name for you guys..what about cakerators or cake ninjas or cake-a-doodlers..aiya I'm rambling again. Let's get down to business and present to you the real reason why you came a visitin'! Today it's all about Tweety Bird..you know the "I tawt I taw a putty tat" tweety bird...I know.. I know ..cuteness overload.

So here I am drawing out tweety's head freehand on a piece of wax paper on top of a red velvet round cake. I'm using a non-toxic edible ink pen to do this.

After that I just cut out the shape of the head and traced out the basic features of Tweety's face unto the wax paper.

Once again I laid the wax paper upon the yummy red velvet cake and carved out the shape of the head first by cutting downwards at a 90 degree angle.

Once the shape is carved out, I carved the top of the cake to give it a rounder cartoonish shape.

After carving a while, it was time to fill the cake with some cream cheese filling..yuuuhhh-uuuhmm!

Then got the top layer to sandwhich that decadent filling..

To create a 3D effect on the cake, I decided to use a large round cutter to create Tweety's cute lil' cheeks.

I carved the 'cheeks' more around the edges to I've it a more rounded look before attaching it on the head. At this point, I felt like a plastic surgeon constructing someone's face. bahaha

Next up was Tweety's tiny little body. Again I drew freehand using wax paper and a non-toxic edible ink pen.

I used the same technique to carve out the body as I did the head.

The after all that it was time to cover both the head and the body with bright yellow fondant.

While waiting for the fondant to set. I prepared the eyes and the message.

I did the eyes like so...using the layering of coloured fondant method. (Boy, I'm digging my orange painted nails!!)

This is how the head looked once covered and the eyes attached. Look at those puffy wuffy cheeks LOL!

Next his pouty orange beak..

And his little orange feet..

Then finally stuck on the name and funny message.

The Making: Minecraft Cake

Hi again! Let me present to you one of the hardest cakes I had to make. A MINECRAFT cake. For those of you who are not familiar with this word, well, basically it's a pc game about building anything by placing blocks together. Anywhoo.. let's just say that making this cake also had the same concept for me. I was literally building it piece by piece. It took me a whole week to prepare and finish the cake. The main feature of this cake is the mosaic arrangement of each piece of coloured fondant and lemme tell ya, it ain't no walk in the park LOL! I found myself pushing myself when I thought I couldn't do it anymore but the end result was so sastisfying that I concluded that if I could do this cake, I can do ANY cake in the world!!

So I started with the figurines of course. The client wanted a lot of character figurines based on the cake. Here you see the body of a sheep...

..a chicken..oh I'll show you the rest once it's done..

Basically I had to prepare several colours that were cut in equally sized fondant squares. Overall it took me 3 days to do this. There was 3 different shades of green,3 different shades of brown, yellow,red, grey.black and white. Overall there were over a thousand little 1cm squares..so I was pretty much eating, thinking and dreaming of squares by the third night.

Here's how I did it. Basically I printed out a template of squares of the size of cake that I wanted which in this case was a 9" by 9" square block of stacked chocolate moist cake with ganache. I taped wax paper on top of it and laid the piece of fondant on top and cut it using the grid as guidance.

To make the mosaic panels of the cake. I taped the wax paper unto the grid template again and randomly arranged the fondant squares one by one to resemble the "grass" block which is a prominent feature in this game.This took me another two days to complete.

I had prepared the cake earlier and now was ready to stack it on top of each other.

Once stacked, it looked like this.

Then I used pieces of paper which I cut out to the measurement that I wanted and started carving away to get lovely sharp edges so that the cake would resemble a cube.

This is how it looked like once it was done.

Meanwhile, I prepared the board.

After covering the cake with ganache, I started sticking the mosaic panels to the side of the cake. This part was tricky because you had to make sure the little fondant squares did not fall apart while doing this process. Basically I lifted the panel slowly using a square cake board making sure that the bottom part was edged closely to the bottom of the cake. Notice that the wax paper was still sticking to the fondant once I got it firmly against the cake.

Using a fondant smoother, I quickly but gently pressed it against the side of the cake and smoothed it over. The chocolate ganache helped in securing the panel to the cake itself.

Here you see all 4 sides are done except for the top.

The top was done the same way but the only difference is instead of using a cake board to transfer the panel on top, I just slid the fondant panel gently on top. Sorry forgot to take a pic of that.:)

There were also two additional blocks of cake that were to go on top of the cake.

One of them was the TNT cake which is also another feature in the game. The other was a 'minecraft block cake'.

Of course I had to to do the minecraft logo. I printed the logo and traced it using the pin prick method and cut it along the dots.

Next up the birthday message to the American birthday boy Beckett:)

*Panting now* well there you have it a MINECRAFT themed cake.

Client also wanted other minecraft features on the sides of the cake..like the axe. You could see that the weight of the cakes on top was stressing the fondant panels of the sides of the cakes. Plus the humidity at that particular time didn't help much even when I put the air conditioning on full blast. Not my finest work but it was hard to control that I guess (despite dowelling to support the cakes) but at least the cake didn't fall apart. Just one of those 'meh' cake days ya know? ;P

Even though I've been baking and taking orders for years from friends, I only started this blog in February of last year but really started my business towards the end of June 2012 after my Wilton course. What you will get:
1. One simple fondant/gumpaste figurine of any design that you like (Size approx. 2-4 inches high)

The Making: Owl Cake

Hi today I'm going to be writing about how I made a cute owl cake.

This cake design is not mine as I based this cake on the photo that the client gave me but I tweaked it a bit to make it mine. Basically, this owl cake design involved drawing a lot of circles and I used whatever I had at hand like cutters and even cointainer covers to achieve that. You could use a proper geometric tool called a compass to do that too..but I think I lost it after high school so yeah I didn't bother with that!

This is how it looked like after the drawing was done on an 8 inch round paper.

This cake design involves layering so I had to figure out which layer to put on first and decided that the feather on the chest of the owl should go first. I made these using a medium rose cutter and cut the petals one by one...

...and stuck it on the round owl body base like so starting from the bottom.

Next, I made top part of the owl using brown fondant and cut it like so.

I won't go too much into the detailing of the cake because it basically involved making a few sugar flowers and leaves stuck on a tree trunk with branches which is quite straightforward. The eyes were simple fondant cut out in circles and stuck on based on the drawing I made.

Here you can see I added some colourful hearts on the sides of the cake.

Side views again. I think the fondant based which was embossed with the lattice texture mat complimented the whole look of the cake.

The Making: Sakura Cake

Hi! I should have written this post since earlier this year but anyway I made this cake for a pretty lady around Chinese New Year period for her birthday and it's a pink sakura cake :)

First, I used a medium rose cutter to cut out the petals and imprinted the veins to make it have some sort of texture and look more realistic.

Then I used a ball tool and another tool to cup the petals and indent the centre.

Then I put them on the flower cups and brushed some pink petal dust in the centre to make it have some depth.

Also brushed on some pink edible glitter for a lovely shining effect.

I cut out more blossoms with a smaller blossom cutter and did the same as the larger blossoms to all of them.

After drying, I put some sugar pearls in the centre using gumpaste glue.

While waiting for the blosoms to dry completely, I prepared the board to make it look like it was a piece of hardgrained wood.

Once the cake was covered with fondant,I covered the bottom edges with shapes molded from a sillicone border mold.

After that I marked, where the branches would go on the cake freehand. This is where your artistic judgement comes out!

I first stuck on the main branch.

I even made a branch looking like a snake..you know..because 2013 is the year of the Snake! heheh..

Here I'm showing you how I made the main trunk as if 'growing out' of the 'wooden' board.

Here you see how the branches wrapped around the entire cake.

Then after that I simple stuck on the dried sugar blossoms all around the branches and it was done!

The Making: Wedding cake and cupcakes for Ed & Jess - Travel theme

Wow..I've been so busy lately that my blog posts have really been put on the backburner. I really need to get typing some! Today's post will be a lengthy one..it's another wedding cake series for a lovely couple named Edward and Jess. Theirs was a very personalised one and really symbolised their love for travel. ok with no further ado ..here's how I did it :)

The couple wanted figurines to resemble themselves so as usual this is the first thing that I did as this usually takes the longest time to make. As you can see here, I made the bride figurine using a plastic mold. Then I adjusted the facial features on the gumpaste mold by referring to the bride's pic. A day later, once the gumpaste has hardened a bit, I completed the facial features by painting on the eyes and adding some peach blush to the cheeks.

Once again using the mold, I shaped the bride's legs. I guess I could have made them by hand but this saves SOOO much time and really less hassle than usual :)

Now on to Mr. Groom. I used the same method as how I made the bride. The tricky part was getting the facial shape and other features right down to the mole!

The figurines takes at least 3 days to dry completely before I can dress them. While waiting I decided to make personalised cupcake wrappers.

I made these using ordinary paper doilies. It was really easy to make and it's perfect if you want personalised colours to match your wedding theme. Basically I just took some white paper doilies, drenched them in a shallow bath of food coloring mixed with a little water for 5 seconds, dried them and then cut out the lacey part to wrap around each individual cup using some glue or clear cellotape. Pretty nifty huh?

The couple also wanted a bouquet of roses on top of the cake. So I made these using their theme colours, white, pink and lavender.

After the figurines had dried, it was time to dress them. First I had to put some hair. I molded some black fondant to cap it over the head.

From there I shaped it over her head and then cut off any excess.

The bride was going to wear her hair up on her wedding day so I added a bun too and made some hair strands using a knife tool.

I also made a fringe and added 3 little swirly roses on top of her bun.

The bride's dress was also personalised and was made to resemble her real wedding dress. I made these white swirly gumpaste roses and stuck them one by one unto the sheet of white gumpaste that I wrapped around the figurine. This took several days to make.

For the groom, I made a blue vest and embossed it with a flowery embossing tool by Patchwork cutters.

I then wrapped a sheet of black gumpaste around the groom and cut it out to resemble a tuxedo.

Then I made the groom's hair too using the same technique as how I did the bride.

Lastly I added the extremities and again had the wait for the figurines to dry. All in all it took almost two weeks to finish these two masterpieces :)

I don't like to waste time so I made the little airplanes that were to go on the cupcakes. Here you can see that I made the body of the plane first and later cut out the airplane wings to be glued underneath the body of the plane. I had to make 10 of these.

Then I had to make little brown suitcases using chocolate fondant and attached little handles to each of the 15 pieces that I had to make.

Again I had to wait for them to dry.

After that I added on some tiny details to the luggages using the theme colours and cut out travelling stickers which I glued on to each individually.

I finished up the details of the planes, added the couples initials and decorated it with the theme colours.

Next up I made 25 2D fondant cut outs of clouds of which I also put the couples initials using their wedding theme colours.

Here are the cupcake toppers all done. You can also see the couple's initials on the suitcases too.

Now on to the cake itself!! Here you can see how I designed the royal icing piping design which was to go on the side of the cake along with..yeah you guessed it...the couple's initials!!

Honestly my piping skills are not as smooth as I would like but I could easily correct it with a brush dipped in a little water.

This is how it looked like once the RI piping was done.

I thought it looked really pretty even though it wasn't perfect.

Lastly I put the whole cake together and that includes the bouquet of roses on top (to which I airbrushed a pearly sheen)...

...and the bride and groom figurines sitting on the second tier. As you can see the bride's dress was still not done at this point!

After the cupcakes were baked and cooled (they were mocha flavoured cupcakes by the way), I started to make the fondant covering which was supposed to cover them. First I imprinted a lacey design on top of the fondant to make it appear special and wedding-y and then I cut out 50 pieces of them using a scalloped round cutter.

Here I brushed each individual fondant topper with some pearl dust to give it a satinny sheen.

Next I made the bride and groom's suitcases. I added some edible glitter on top of their initials too.

You can see that I made the bride's hands last and shaped it to look like they were holding hands too. :)

Oh I also added little passports and airplane tickets next to the suitcases to add another personal touch to the cupcake toppers.

The most nerve wrecking thing was transporting this cake all the way to Putrajaya. I swear I nearly had a heart attack haha..(well, this happens everytime I transport cakes anyway..heheh). However, when I reached the venue, it was a perfect setting for the cake so I was really glad.

The Making : Hello Kitty Cake

Miaow!! Hello Kitty! I've finally been commissioned to make this all time favourite cartoon character for a very lucky 3 year old girl named Isabelle.

As usual, I prepared the board. To make it extra special I added on some pink edible glitter on it.

The cake flavour was not on my cake list but it was a macadamia nut cake with raspberry jam filling and covered with white chocolate ganache...yumm..I wish I had a chance to see it once it was cut.

Client wanted a bow around the bottom so that's exactly what I did.

Then the birthday girl's name. I like that they only put her name down instead of the whole Happy Birthday.. message. I mean it seems logical that toddlers only recognise how the cake looks most of the time and not quite anything that's written on it.

Then I attached the yellow button nose and the pink bow.

The pink bow was kinda tricky. I had to follow the cartoon exactly as the client didn't want an actual 'bow' bow on the head. So I made it as close as possible to the character's bow and added some glitter to the middle to tie in with the glitter on the board.

Okay I had some problems with my air brush machine today so I opted for the Wilton's Color Mist food color spray in pearl white. Worked the same and never dissapoints :)

The I cut out the eyes and whiskers with black chocolate fondant.

Added two tiny flowers flanking the birthday girl's name and I was done.

View from the front side. It was quite a thick cake at about 4 inches high. I baked three layers and 3 separate times in the Hello Kitty cake pan.

Showcase: Simple butterfly and flower design on cake

Another simple post..This was an order which was passed down to me from another baker/decorator friend of mine. It was a garden themed cake with simple flowers and butterflies. This is what is called a cake with 2D deco. 2D meaning that the fondant cut outs are attached flat on the cake.

Here's the cake before it was decorated. It was a coconut cake with coconut mousse filling as requested by the client.

I always do cupcakes fondant deco waaayyy before I bake. I only bake the cupcakes fresh on the day before that is supposed to be picked up as cupcakes don't last too long.

I won't describe too much on the details. I think it's pretty self explanatory. heheh. Some a bit too graphic perhaps...LOL!

I had fun making these. Definitely had a chuckle or two and tried to imagine the faces of the ladies who were going to eat them ;D. I hope they had fun and a good laugh too!

Hi all! Another short entry. I wish I had taken more pics of the steps but I was quite rushed due to frequent calls. If there's one thing that's very important for clients to remember, is that you must TRUST me. I'm not gonna run away with your cake. I don't even want to be stuck with a cake I don't want. When I do work, I need peace and quiet. I'm an artist (aisehh..) and cannot be rushed. ;P

This happens often in my line of work. Although, I do understand that when clients order online,there are risks. You don't know me, I sure as hell don't know you, right? hehe. It's easy to feel panicky when I don't answer your calls. (that's why I ask you to message or email only). I mean, it's hard picking up the phone when your hands are so busy. Don't worry, I'm not mad. I just hope that future clients will understand. I'll probably write a post about what actually happens from when you start to order to the description of the time frame on how a cake is done to delivery or pick up. It's all about learning what I do really.

Mashimaro Cupcakes

Hi all, this is a simple entry on how I did the Mashimaro cupcakes. I really don't have much time to write on my blog nowadays since I'm quite occupied with orders but I do try when I can :)

So here the fondant message and tiny flowers are cut out and dried first.

Then the figurines are shaped and dried.

That's it..short and simple but oh so cute!

The Making: Stilletto shoes and Leopard Print Birthday Cake!

Hallowww there sexpots! Today's post is a wild and sexy one..like literally..It's all about sky high heels, leopard prints, the fiery red colour and classy gold and some pearlised jewellery. Yeah I liked making this cake as it was a chance for me to make something that I've long wanted to do, which was a stiletto heel.

Okay, so I started with some gumpaste and shaped the heel. I wanted to achieve a height that that would literally bend your feet till it was almost anatomically impossible and would impress even the most discerning fashionista out there.

Once I shaped the heel, I inserted a lollipop stick into the middle of the heel to straighten and steady the gum paste heel till it dried.

In the meantime, I cut out gum paste shapes of the front of the shoe and the ankle straps as well as the sole which is not shown here. I basically drew the required shapes on paper and traced it on the rolled fondant and the cut the shapes out.

Once the heel had dried, I attached the sole to the heel. Prior to attaching the sole to the heel, I dried the sole into shape by leaving it on a styrofoam which was cut to resemble the curve of the heel.

Here I attached the ankle strap and the toe strap with gum paste glue and let it dry. I made sure the straps stayed in position and kept it's shape by stuffing some soft tissue to hold it up.

After that I rolled out some red fondant to cut out the cushioned layer of the sole and made a bright red ribbon to be attached on the back of the ankle strap.

While waiting for the shoe to dry completely, which took about a day, I rolled out some more red fondant to cover the cake board.

For the deco on the side of the cake, I used the Karen Davies brooch mold which I bought from the UK. Here I dusted some corn starch to prevent the fondant from sticking on the mold.

Then I rolled some white fondant..

..took it out from the mold and produced this.

Of course to enhance the shape of the brooch,I dusted some pearl dust..

to produce this.

I then dusted a little bit of gold dust to produce an even more realistic dimension to the brooch.

Now on to some paintwork. To create the leopard look on the cake, I used some metallic light gold food paint.

I painted some gold splotches on the shoe and let it dry.

In the meantime,I covered the chocolate cake with ganache..yumm yumm..

After I covered the cake with ivory colored fondant and covered the borders with some pearl fondant strips, I started painting on the cake itself. The prints didn't have to be all uniform in size and was randomly shaped to make the prints look more natural.

Next, after the gold paint had dried, I painted on some black food colouring surrounding the gold prints. Once that was done, I left it to dry a little.

Now for the red flower, I rolled out some red fondant and used various sized round scalloped cutters to cut out the flower shape.

Then I ruffled it with a dog bone tool.

Then I left it to dry on the flower formers before stacking and gluing them one on top of the other.

Then I made a dark center for the flower and stuck the flower on a red strip of fondant which was wrapped around the cake. I thought that looked so pretty.:)

This is where the cake got personalised. I spelt out the birthday girl's name on my alphabet imprinter and imprinted it on a strip of ivory fondant and stuck it on the middle of the sole of the shoe. How cute is that!

Phewwwh! That was a lot of typing...haha..yup a pretty simple looking cake but a lot of work thrown into it. I loved that it demonstrated and represented so many techniques in cake decorating from gum paste construction, paintwork, mold work and sugar flowers.

So there you have it..a stylish cake for a stylish girl and her friends! Woohoo!

The Making: Tigger Birthday Cake

Hi, all! I've said in my earlier posts that I suck at figurines. Okay..maybe I'm being over dramatic. Maybe I just feel that figurines are so much work and knowing how I'm such a perfectionist at doing things, it adds on to the pressure of decorating my cakes. I always have to get it exactly right and that sometimes takes the fun out of it. I've realised now that any art should be fun. Once I had that in my mind, making figurines got a little bit more enjoyable and fun. (I still think it's a lot of work though!)

Truthfully, all the figurines that are in my blog, I've never learned from anyone and I don't even own books concerning on how to make these cartoon character figurines. My tools for this are my eyes...and a little bit of brain power and deciphering. I can somehow look at a pic of the object that I need to replicate and produce the same image into fondant. It's a gift really haha..yeah yeah..me and my braggy self needs to shut up! Seriously though, it does take a lot of thought. Perhaps I should take a short cut and buy one of those Debbie Brown books to make my life a little easier. (FYI: Debbie Brown is a famous cake decorator who produces a lot of books specialising on figurines and cartoon characters.)

So let's cut the crap and get on with it, shall we? As with any figurine, you gotta make the basic shapes first.The head, torso and legs in the desired position must be made. I'm sorry if I don't give step by step instructions on how to do this. I hope you are as visual as I am. If you really want to learn, well, who knows I might give classes one day haha...basically teach you on how to use the dexterity of your hands.

Then on to the face of our happy Tigger. I stuck on some yellow cutouts on the eyes and mouth area.

Basically you gotta catch that happy and slightly crazed expression of Tigger..if you can't, you'll only end up having an ordinary tiger in your hands.

Side view with his cheeky tongue sticking out. After that, I let it dry a couple of days. See this is what some people don't get. Most of them think that I do all of this in ONE day. The truth is take several days for me to finish even one figurine. I have to let the frikin thing dry to be firm first before doing any further decorating...so it takes time people. I'm not a super-figurine-made-in-a minute kind of person.Like I said I'm a perfectionist, hates to be rushed and would rather take the time to produce a great masterpiece :P...but enough about me..haha..

So next, the cake. Here I demonstrate how I use the cupping method to smoothe the edges of the fondant.

Then I cut out haphazard strips of black fondant to produce the tiger stripes.More of this technique is shown here.

The bottom borders were made up of rolled orange fondant to resemble a tiger's tail. I then painted on some stripes unto it with black food gel paste mixed with a little clear vanilla as shown above.

Views of the cake from all angles. Oh! I forgot to tell you how I made the tail of Tigger himself. Well, I basically twisted some wire and covered it well with some orange gum paste and again painted on the stripes. Let it dry and stuck it on his butt!

So there you have it a jolly 2 tiered Tigger cake complete with stripes and a tail! Fit for a two year old boy born in the year of the Tiger! Roarrr!!

The Making: 2 Tier Garden Themed Wedding Cake

Garden weddings are sweet and lovely. Same goes for this cake. The red roses however , gave a nice pop of color to an otherwise mellow cake.

I made two sizes of posies. I just used rose cutters and cut some rolled gum paste with large, medium and small sized cutters.After that, I frilled up the edges using a ball tool, let them dry on its own and the once dry, stacked them on top of each consequent size using royal icing..

This were the small flowers with medium and small rose cutters and a smaller petal in the middle.

I put some royal icing on the back of the flower and stuck them on the cake starting from the bottom and letting them dry first. Once dry it will be steady enough to support the flowers being glued on the top part of the cake.

This is how it looked like once all the flowers were glued on. I think there were more than 80 of them to cover an 8 inch cake.

I realised the flowers were looking a bit too plain..so I decided to brush on some gold dust in the middle of each flower to give it some depth and colour.

I dabbed on some gold dust and lightly spread the colour from inner to outwards using gentle strokes.

For the red rose bouquet on top of the cake, I used a hydrangea cutter to produce little flowers on wires to act as fillers.

The Making: ABC Blocks Birthday Cake

Heya folks! Today I'm gonna write about the making of a colourful bunch of ABC blocks cake.

First I got a print out of the desired ABC font that I wanted.

Next I used the pin prick method to trace out all the letters one by one unto the roll out fondant.

This is how it looked like once done. Then I cut them out one by one.

Besides the letters, I also made colourful cut outs on fondant...like balls..

...flowers, apples, bananas...and cute green froggies too :) All these were made a few days in advance.

Next I made the cake. I baked a 9 inch cake at two inches high, FOUR times to produce 8 blocks of the perfect square of 4' by 4"cakes. I then filled and covered these butter walnut cakes with buttercream and let it set in the fridge for a few hours.

Once covered one by one in fondant, I brushed on some gum paste glue on to the edges ready to stick on the fondant cut out borders.

I just went and cut them out it by feel. Once I stuck it on the cake , I just stretched it out accordingly to fit.

Then I stuck on the letters and the cut out pictures.

I also baked an extra cake with the same ABC theme. Here I demonstrate how to use the crimper to create a pattern on the edges of the fondant cake.

I also made colourful ABC themed cookie pops :)
