The Joint Admissions and Matriculation
Board (JAMB) has released the 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation
Examination (UTME) results.

The board, however, withheld 12,110 results for possible disciplinary action.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu
Ojerinde, announced this at a news conference on the release of
the results in Bwari, FCT, on Friday.

The registrar said after thorough
processing of answer scripts of the candidates who sat for the
examination, the board discovered some forms of malpractice perpetuated
during the conduct of the examination.

“However, the results of 68,309
candidates from various centres are undergoing further screening to
ascertain the culpability of 12,110 candidates’ results.“

A total of 1,629,102 candidates applied
to sit for the Paper Pencil Test (PPT), while 15,008 candidates applied
for the Dual Based Test, bringing the number of candidates
to 1,644,110.

“The general performance of candidates in this year’s examination shows remarkable improvement compared with last year.

“Ten candidates scored 300 marks and above, while 127,017 candidates scored between 1-159 marks.

“About 40,692 candidates’ results were
invalid due to either multiple shading or no shading at all. After
processing all the results, the board also discovered that about 47,974
candidates were absent.“

The registrar assured the candidates
that their results could be accessed on the JAMB Website:
www.myjambresult.com using their registration numbers.

He said about 40 centres would be screened to ascertain their culpability and warned the public against Internet fraudsters.

“Information reaching JAMB shows
Internet fraudsters are already telling candidates that their results
could be upgraded in one form or the other. “

This is pure deceit, the public and
candidates are hereby advised to disregard these fraudsters since they
do not have access to our data.

“Let me once again state that candidates
are allowed to change their choices of institutions and courses once
only, this change has to be effected within two weeks from today. “

Ojerinde said the Computer Based Test (CBT) is scheduled to take
place from May 18 to June 1 and appealed to candidates to reprint their
e-registration slips afresh to further ascertain their CBT centres.

A military helicopter has reportedly crashed near Yenegoa in Bayelsa State, Saturday evening.

Governor Patrick Yakowa of Kaduna State, former national security
adviser, NSA, General Owoeye Azazi were said to be in the naval aircraft
at the time of the crash.

*Azazi and Yakowa

Others in the ill-fated crash include a top politician from Kaduna
state Dudas Tsoho, Azazi’s orderly, the pilot and his co-pilot.

Vanguard gathered that the victims were returning to Yenagoa, the
Bayelsa State capital, from the funeral of the father of Douglas
Oronto, Special Adviser to the President on Research and Documentation
at Nembe area of Bayelsa, when the helicopter crashed into the creeks.
The helicopter was said to have burst into flames immediately.

The victims of the ill-fated chopper according to a former youth
president of Okoroba community, Hitler Adumion who spoke to Vanguard
from the scene of the crash, were burnt beyond recognition.

The former youth president said, “we became suspicious when we
noticed a thick smoke coming from the forest and we organized a search
party to trace the source and stumbled on the crash scene. Though we
don’t know the identities of the victims but the helicopter was still
burning with bodies burnt beyond recognition. As I am speaking with you
the machine is still burning.”

Efforts to get reactions from naval authorities, the Joint Task
Force, JTF, and the Air Force on the tragedy proved abortive as they
all refused to disclose the identities of the victims.

However, one of the officials, specifically told Vanguard that there
are normal channels to follow when such tragic incident occur –
notifying the families of the deceased first before going public.

Eight persons have died in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital after a distribution cable belonging to Power Holding Company of Nigeria snapped and landed on traders at the Apata Market.

The busy market is located in Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.

The cable snapped and fell on some vegetable sellers at the Agbekoja section of the popular market around 7a.m on Monday.

Among the victims is a pregnant woman simply identified as Tawa, said to be the only child of her mother.

Another female casualty was a nursing mother who was electrocuted while her one-year-old son survived.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Mrs. Olabisi Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident, saying only five people died while the survivors were rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Commission, Mr. Osita Chidoka, said on Wednesday that 100 officials of the commission have been dismissed from the service for corruption.

Chidoka made the disclosure in Port Harcourt while addressing officers and men of the commission as part of activities marking his tour of FRSC formations in the South- south.

The corps marshal, who was represented by the Deputy Corps Marshal in charge of Vehicles Administration, Mr. Danjuma Garba, warned that officials of the commission should shun corrupt practices or face sanctions.

“Bribe money is blood money,” Chidoka said.

He said the FRSC had zero tolerance for corruption and that the commission was known for its integrity.

Chidoka said that marshals should live within their income, advising against obtaining loans indiscriminately from banks or individuals.

The corps marshal said that his officials should rededicate themselves to saving the lives of citizens.

He said the constitutional mandate of the FRSC was to save lives and that marshals should rally round the FRSC's management to realise the mandate.

He said the commission would intensify road patrol operations across the country.

“Response time should not be more than 20 minutes; go back to our tenet of saving lives; we must deliver in saving lives”, the News Agency of Nigeria quoted the FRSC boss as saying during the address.

Against public opinion and massive criticisms, the Nigerian Senate has approved the renaming of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to the Moshood Abiola University (MAU).

In a report gathered from a reliable source, the Senate approved the renaming bill which was sent earlier in the week by President Goodluck Jonathan to bypass any embarrassing rejection of the name-change in what many Nigerians saw as illegal and unconstitutional even with some supporters of the renaming calling it as ill-timed or politically motivated.

A reliable source who spoke to Ascology News on condition of anonymity, said although The Nigerian Senate is on recess, the bill had been passed without delay but the Senate will make it publicly known after its members return from recess.

Other institutions that were renamed in the same bill sent to the Senate were the Federal University of Technology Umudike which was renamed to the Michael Okpara University, Umudike and the Federal Univeristy of Technology, Yola renamed to the Modibbo Adamawa University.

A law suit has been filed by students of the tertiary institution asking that the name-change was unconstitutional as it initially was done without parliamentary approval.

Against public opinion and massive criticisms, the Nigerian Senate has approved the renaming of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to the Moshood Abiola University (MAU).

In a report gathered by Ascology News, the Senate approved the renaming bill which was sent earlier in the week by President Goodluck Jonathan to bypass any embarrassing rejection of the name-change in what many Nigerians saw as illegal and unconstitutional.

LAGOS (AFP) – Nigerian police fired tear gas on Monday as a crowd surged at the site of a devastating plane crash in the country’s largest city of Lagos that killed all 153 people on board. A crowd trying to get a look at the wreckage sought to break though a police barricade in one area at the site, prompting police to fire tear gas, an AFP correspondent reported. The crowd of about 2,000 people retreated but later returned, looking on from rooftops and other areas. Rescue workers have so far pulled at least 62 bodies from the wreckage,

an official said as searches pressed on at the site of the devastation. A spokesman for the country’s accident investigation bureau said all those on board were considered dead. Two cranes arrived early Monday to clear debris and allow rescue workers better access to the densely populated area near the airport where the

anonymity. A church, a two-storey residential building and a printing shop were badly damaged at the site. The number of those killed on the ground remained unclear. Smoke was still rising from the scene and water trucks were also broughtin to douse the smouldering wreckage. “We were lucky. We just finished our church service when this thing happened,” one resident at the scene on Monday morning said. One woman, who said that her uncle had been aboard the plane, asked rescue workers if she could have access to the site, but they refused,

mourning for victims of the crash.
