How to photograph perfect flowers.

When you are taking pictures of flowers, you have to look out for flowers with good blossom and also take note of the form, color, lighting and background.

It needs a great deal of patients to photograph flowers.
Frame the picture, get it in focus, set the aperture, then about to press the shutter button and a breeze starts and moves the flower!

These pictures are taken from indoor in the The Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden. The lighting is not good enough to take the best as I realised the flowers shots are not sharp enough and I should have used a tripod.

Concentrate on what you see in the viewfinder, and recompose the picture until it looks the best to you. Don’t be afraid to shoot a few extra pictures. Try different angles and different lighting. Also depict your subject from several different viewpoints.

I don’t have all the answers to good picture shots of flowers.It’s also important to know the control of depth of fields in your camera.

These orchid flowers were taken on Canon 30D fixed with a Canon 70-200 zoom lens.

Flower photography is a great photographic pleasure. Flowers can’t look any better than in color. In my opinion not all flowers are the same, some look like they are easy to be photographed but it may difficult to get all the details.

Flowers in tropical and temperate countries are different in size and color. Some look so fantastic and geogeous that the picture just comes out looking exactly how you want. And then some look average and uninteresting, but when you get in close, it will be a surprise to get all the curves, lines, colors and the finer details..

When you walk into the Orchid Garden, you will find the beautiful landscape of the garden.This photo was taken with my compact camera whereas the other camera Canon 30D was fixed with a 70-200mm zoom lens for more closeup.

The Orchid Garden Kuala Lumpur is situated in front of the Bird Park, within the Lake Garden vicinity.
The Garden houses about 3,000 orchid species from around the world, with 800 species from Malaysia alone.

Hibiscus Flower ?

This particular flowering plant is seen creeping on the wood frames, and the little flowers grow closely together in clusters to form a drooping garland. When I looked carefully, the flower has five petals, a stigma just like a hibiscus flower, the only difference is that it is smaller in size. The colorful flower is a combination of yellow and red.

The flower looks like Bird of Paradise.

Bird of paradise flower is commonly known as a crane flower in South Africa. It is because of its resemblance to the bird of paradise. These pictures were taken in Cameron Highlands.

Each flower is made up of three upright orange sepals and three highly modified vivid blue petals. Two of the petals are joined together in a structure resembling an arrowhead with the third petal forming a nectary at the base of the flower. When a pollinator, usually a sunbird, lands on the arrowhead in search of nectar, the anthers are levered clear of the flower and deposit pollen on the breast of the bird. When the bird flies to another plant, this pollen is transferred to the stigma of the new flower.

There are many varieties of the hibiscus over here, this is the five-petaled Orange Yellow Hibiscus which I took at Cameron Highlands recently.

The Red hibiscus flower or Bunga Raya (Malay) is the National flower of Malaysia.

Growing cacti that you have to understand

Cacti or cactus plants have many shapes.The ideal environment for a cactus is not of course solely dependant on its genetic predispositions. There are several factors that contribute to how well or not well a particular cactus will do under certain conditions.

The first factor is how it was raised before you acquired it. Most of the cacti we purchase where probably grown in a greenhouse where conditions are more or less kept within a particular range of light, heat, moisture. Seedlings are kept cooler and in higher humidity conditions with a more limited amount of light than your standard commercial greenhouse. As the plants grow larger they will be moved into a greenhouse where they receive light through opaque plastic and depending on the location of the nursery probably a much hotter and drier climate.

So now you've bought your new little pride and joy from your local nursery, cactus farm. You take it home and immediately place it outside in the hot sun; probably not a good idea.

Cacti aren't able to move or put on sun screen so they may need our help when dealing with the elements. So don't let the sun be an enemy of your cacti.

There are many types of cactus which I saw in the Cactus Point and Cactus Valley in Cameron Highlands. But I noticed that some of these cactus plants are blooming with flowers.

Cactus or Cacti are also known as low maintenance plants. It is the best indoor plant type, as they require little attention for their healthy growth. There is a wide variety of shapes, sizes and color of cactus. Cacti are called as perennial plants because they will be growing year after year.

Cactus plant care

Potting

* Cactus should be placed under adequate sunlight.
* They should be sowed in pots having a good drainage system.
* Remove one inch of soil form the top. Replace it with gravel.
* The soil should be a mixture of sand, peat and perlite.
* Cactus growing vertically should be sowed in container whose diameter is half the height of the plant.
* Cacti that are growing breadth wise should be grown on containers, which are having 2 inches of diameter extra than the plant.
* Recently sowed or repotted plants have more chances of getting rot.
* The soil should be dry enough while the sowing or repotting is been done. Watering should be done after a week so that the roots are healed within the time.

Cactus grows very slowly. Some cactus takes a year to germinate and to know how they look like it takes again some years. They can breed through branches or from a part of the plant. The part of the plant is removed from the main plant and dried for 2 weeks. After the cut portion is healed then it is planted in shallow soil.

Watering

Cactus needs less watering so water them when they dry out. It is better to use clay pots without any glaze, as it needs less water than glazed or plastic pots.

Most of the cactus plant type requires a period for rest so that they can flower the rest of the year. The exact time required for cactus plant keeps varying but in general it is within three months. They are quite friendly to the chill weather and during the winter they should be watered less with no fertilizer application.

How to grow good roses ?

To grow good roses it is necessary to cultivate, to prune
and to spray. If you have a well-cultivated bed you need not
worry about watering. But if you start to water in hot
weather, you must keep it up, soaking the roots thoroughly
about once a week.

Spraying every 10 days guards against the diseases and
insects that attack roses. Nicotine sulphate wipes out the
green lice; arsenate of lead is used against chewing
insects; or sulphur and arsenate of lead may be used in a
dust, as may DDT dust.

The bees visit the flower collecting pollen and nectar

The flower and bees...This is a full bloom and pink flower about 15cm wide, and distinctive yellow stamens.The color and scent are often the driving forces in attracting insects and bees to the garden in search of pollen and nectar.

The flowers need the bees so that they can bring their pollens for cross pollination. The bees visit the flowers to collect pollen and nectar for food for themselves and their young.

Visitors who visited the garden in Cameron Highlands used to touch and disturb on the nature of the bloom beauty even the owner has issued the warning.

Rose flower in Cameron Highlands

I discovered that there are many types of rose flowers when I visited the Rose Valley,Cameron Highlands a few weeks ago. The roses come in many colors and the ones thatI saw were in various shades of red, pink, yellow, orange and white.

The weather is cool at the end of the year in November and December. Many families would spend the year-end school holidays with their children in Cameron Highlands. Visitors were seen here admiring the flowers which are in many varieties. The flowers are bigger than those grown in the city. There are signs warning visitors not to touch the flowers but I saw some children plucking the flowers.

The entrance fee is RM4.oo.

Different color of Olive-back sunbird?

These are two photos of front and back of this colorful little bird I took and I believe it is the Olive-backed Sunbird. It looks the same compare the shots which I posted earlier but the color has a bit different.It must belong to the same species of Sunbird

The Olive-backed Sunbirds are small songbirds, at most 12cm long. The underparts of both male and female are bright yellow, the backs are a dull brown color. The forehead, throat and upper breast of the adult male is a dark, metallic blue-black. But the underparts of this bird which I captured in Cameron Highlands is white in color.

The photo was taken at the Cactus Point when I was looking at the flowers and cactus plants.This colorful little bird came and sucking nectar from the flower plants. I took out my Canon 70-200mm F2.8 zoom lens and immediately took some shots.

Canna or Canna lily are one of the most popular garden plants. The photo was taken on the roadside of Tanah Rata, Cameron Highland.

Some species and many cultivars are widely grown in the garden in temperate and sub-tropical regions. Sometimes, they are also grown as potted plants. A large number of ornamental cultivars have been developed. They can be used in herbaceous borders, tropical plantings, and as a patio or decking plant.

Tigers can swim.

Among the big cats (generally refer to the tiger, lion, leopard, and jaguar ) only the tiger and jaguar are strong swimmers. Tigers are often found bathing in ponds, lakes and rivers.
