Not another cold.  You’re in for a week of sneezing, coughing, and runny nose. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;More than 200 different viruses cause the condition that we know of as the “common cold.”  And it is truly common.  There are an estimated 1 billion colds suffered by American people each year.  As we age, we tend to get fewer colds per year.  On average, those older than 60 have one or fewer colds each year while children have from 6-10 colds per year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Symptoms may vary from cold to cold, but in general, they include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scratchy throat&lt;br /&gt;Mild fever&lt;br /&gt;Congestion in the nose and sinuses&lt;br /&gt;Runny nose&lt;br /&gt;Sneezing&lt;br /&gt;Cough&lt;br /&gt;Headache&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most colds last from 2-14 days, with the average duration of a cold being about a week.  Because it’s a virus, antibiotics will not change the course of a cold.  In fact, taking antibiotics when they aren’t needed can cause problems, such as increased chance of developing a medication allergy or a drug-resistant germ.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But you don’t need to suffer miserably.  There are some things that you can do to feel better when you have a cold:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Rest.  While you may not be able to take to your bed for days at a time, try to get extra rest at the beginning of a cold, when you’re feeling your worst.  This allows your immune system an opportunity to concentrate on attacking the cold.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Drink Lots of Liquids to keep your mucus thinned out and able to drain.  Liquids will also replace fluids lost due to a fever.  Clear liquids are best, such as water, juice and tea.  Chicken broth is especially good for unclogging nasal passages.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Stay Warm.  While getting chilled doesn’t cause a cold, trying to stay warm due to inadequate clothing can stress your immune system and keep it from fighting effectively against a cold.  Stay bundled up against the chilly air while you have a cold.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Steamy Water can help to clear up congestion.  Take a hot shower, put a pot of boiling water on your stove, or put a towel over your head while you bend over a sink full of hot water.  Inhaling steam can also relieve a cough.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Vitamin C is a controversial treatment for colds.  While there’s no hard scientific evidence proving that it works against a cold, 500 mg of Vitamin C taken four times a day may shorten the duration of a cold and ease symptoms such as congestion, sneezing and cough.  Take this vitamin with lots of water, and don’t take this large of a dose for longer than three days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Zinc Lozenges can effectively shorten the life of a cold for some persons.  Zinc also helps to relieve symptoms such as a scratchy throat.  But some people find that zinc makes them feel nauseated.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Use Saltwater for an irritated throat.  One teaspoon mixed into a glass of warm water makes a soothing gargle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Stop Smoking, at least while you have a cold.  Smoking can irritate throat and nasal passages and it also stresses your immune system.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Drink Herbal Tea, such as goldenseal and echinacea.  While not universally considered helpful for colds, some health care providers believe that these herbs, taken either as a tea or a supplement, help to shorten the duration of a cold.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Eat Lightly during a cold, to keep up your energy.  Fruits and vegetables are a good choice.  Consider seasoning with garlic, an herb that contains healing properties when crushed or chopped and allowed to sit for 10 minutes before cooking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Exercise Lightly, when you feel a little better.  Exercise can stimulate the immune system and help your cold to heal.  Don’t do anything strenuous, though, as this can defeat the purpose by depressing your immune system.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Moisten the Inside of Your Nose with petroleum or K-Y Jelly if it’s sore from blowing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Over the Counter Medications such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen can relieve fever and muscle aches associated with colds.  Decongestants, such as &lt;a name="OLE_LINK1"&gt;pseudoephedrine&lt;/a&gt;, or phenylephrine ,can relieve congestion, and cough syrups with guiafenesin, or dextromethorphan, can relieve coughs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See your health care provider if:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cold symptoms appear to improve over 7-14 days, then suddenly worsen&lt;br /&gt;You have trouble swallowing&lt;br /&gt;You experience difficulty breathing or wheezing&lt;br /&gt;You have a fever over 101 degrees, lasting more than 3 days&lt;br /&gt;You’re coughing up large amounts of sputum, especially if it’s green or bloody&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;© Copyright 2005 Goldenstar Enterprises All Rights Reserved&lt;br /&gt;www.myhomecures.com &lt;/p&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;

Two of the most common arthritic conditions are osteoarthritis and    rheumatoid arthritis.  Of the two, osteoarthritis is the most common.  It is a condition caused by the “wear and tear” of the cartilage in the joints.  Cartilage is a tissue that cushions the joints and helps them to move more freely.  Osteoarthritis is often seen in people older than 40, or in those who’ve suffered an injury to a joint.  The symptoms of this condition are pain and stiffness of the large joints such as the knee or hip, often in only one side rather than in both.  The pain often gets worse throughout the day as joints are used.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a disorder of the immune system.  Your immune system normally recognizes invaders such as viruses, bacteria and even cancer, and works to fight the intruders.  But in RA, the immune system gets mixed up and attacks the healthy tissues of the joints.  It isn’t totally understood what causes RA but it’s thought to be triggered by an infection or physical or emotional stress.  RA generally arises in people between 25 and 40 years old, but it can affect younger persons too, even children.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may appear suddenly or gradually and include joint pain, swelling, tenderness and redness of the small joints of the body, such as fingers, feet and ankles, neck and jaw—although larger joints may also be affected.  Pain is often worse during the morning hours.  Generally the arthritis occurs symmetrically, with both ankles or both hands affected rather than the one-sided pattern seen in osteoarthritis.  Pain is often worse in the early morning hours.  And because RA is a disease of the immune system, other body systems may be involved, such as your blood vessels, lungs, and bones.  Fever and weight loss are not uncommon with this disease.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because arthritis is a chronic condition, treatment is targeted to symptom relief.  Treatment of arthritis may include:&lt;br /&gt;                                                                                                                &lt;br /&gt;   Good Nutrition is especially important for rheumatoid arthritis.  A diet low in meats is best, since a substance called “arachidonic acid” found in meat aggravates joint inflammation.  Oily cold- water fish such as salmon, tuna and mackerel are good sources of protein because they contain fatty acids that will help to control inflammation.  Walnuts, flaxseed, and oils such as sesame, sunflower and grape seed oils are good plant sources of fatty acids.  And according to researchers at Michigan State University, tart cherries contain certain compounds that also have anti-inflammatory properties.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In fact, recent research shows that 6-10 daily servings of colorful fruits and vegetables may help rheumatoid arthritis sufferers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Food Allergies are linked to RA, so you should avoid any food that you are allergic to.  Common culprits are wheat, corn, dairy products, citrus fruits, tomatoes, white potatoes, caffeine, eggplant and peppers.  If you’re not sure if you’re allergic to a food, try eliminating one food at a time and see if your symptoms improve.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Vitamins and Other Supplements that may help arthritis symptoms include the following:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Glucosamine builds cartilage and may slow joint damage over time.  Recent studies have shown that for many people, this supplement is more effective in relieving arthritis pain than ibuprofen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Chondroitin Sulfate is often combined with glucosamine.  Like glucosamine, chondroitin builds cartilage, but it may not be as effective because it is not absorbed as well by the body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) lacks scientific data proving its effectiveness but it is thought that it helps to repair damaged cartilage and helps to reduce the pain of arthritis.  You may notice a bad taste in your mouth (like garlic or oysters) or bad breath when using this supplement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Vitamins C, D, and E may help to delay the progression of osteoarthritis.  While it’s fairly easy to get Vitamin C through 5-10 servings of fruits and vegetables daily, 400 IU of Vitamins D and E are recommended by many sources because it’s difficult to get enough of these vitamins through diet alone.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Niacin amide is a form of vitamin B3 that is thought to be effective in treating knee pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        S-adenosylmethionine (Sam-E) is a European supplement that is said to relieve the pain of osteoarthritis better than over the counter pain relievers like ibuprofen.  Although there are few scientific studies to back up this claim, it appears that Sam-E helps to build cartilage.  It is expensive, though, costing up to $230/month for ongoing treatment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Feverfew and Boswellia are two herbal supplements said to relieve arthritis pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With all supplements, follow directions on the bottle or consult with your health care provider for appropriate dosages.  Some health professionals recommend combining several of these supplements until you find the combination that works best for you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Exercise is one of the most important things you can do if you have arthritis.  It can decrease joint pain and stiffness and increase flexibility as well as strengthening the muscles around the joints.  Three types of exercise are important:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Good Exercises &lt;br /&gt;        To Try&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Walking&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cycling&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Swimming&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tai Chi&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yoga&lt;br /&gt; Range of Motion- Gentle stretching of the joints through all of their normal movements should be done daily.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Strengthening- should be done at least every other day, using small weights or resistance bands.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Aerobic Exercise-Two or three times a week for 20-30 minutes will increase endurance and reduce inflammation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Weight Reduction is essential if you are heavier than you should be, because excess weight puts extra pressure on the joints.  Studies have shown that maintaining a healthy weight is especially important for those who have knee pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Sleeping 6-8 hours per night can help you to cope with arthritis pain.  Some people find that a daily nap helps, too.  Prioritizing the things you need to do will allow time for the rest you need.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Stress Reduction can help to alleviate symptoms by relaxing the muscles around the inflamed joints.  Stress can be experience in response to good things, such as a new job, getting married, or moving, as well as more negative things like divorce or a death in the family.  But all kinds of stress, whether good or bad, can make your muscles tense.  You can reduce stress by meditating or praying, or closing your eyes and breathing deeply.  “Imagery” is also very effective; this is done by imagining a relaxing setting and pleasant activity such as lying on a beach, feeling the sun on your face.  There are lots of videos and tapes that can help to guide you through relaxation techniques.&lt;br /&gt;   Heat and Cold Applications to aching joints can temporarily ease pain.  Heat relaxes the muscles and helps to relieve muscle tension, as well as stimulating the blood circulation. Cold numbs the area, relieving the pain.  It also reduces inflammation and swelling.  Whether you use heat or cold depends upon what is causing your pain at the time (swelling versus muscle tension, for example) and which treatment works best for you. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ideas for heat application include a warm bath or shower, a Jacuzzi or whirlpool, or even a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel.  If you have an electric blanket, you can turn it up early in the morning before getting out of bed to reduce stiffness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To apply cold, use a cold pack, ice cubes in a zip lock baggie, or even a pack of frozen vegetables.  Cold should not be applied directly to your skin (use a towel to protect yourself) and should not be left on for longer than 15 minutes at a time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Topical Analgesics (pain relievers) are helpful to some people.  In cream, gel or salve form, these analgesics contain one or more of the following ingredients:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Counter-Irritants fool the pain by making the skin feel hot or cold.  Oil of wintergreen, clove oil, menthol, camphor, and eucalyptus oil are examples of ingredients in products such as “Arthricare” or “Icy Hot.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Salicylates have the same ingredient in them as aspirin; when used topically, they seep through the skin and help to inhibit pain.  Examples of salicylate products are “Aspercreme” and “Bengay.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Capsaicin is an ingredient found in cayenne peppers.  This substance reduces the pain impulses that travel to the brain.  Examples of products containing capsaicin are “Zostrix” and “Capzasin-P.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Over the Counter Anti-Inflammatory Medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin can relieve arthritic pain effectively.  Most of these medications, however, can cause gastrointestinal upset and if used frequently, even stomach bleeding.  It is best to try to avoid frequent use of these medications if possible. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A good resource for arthritis information, including a guide to alternative therapies and supplements, is the Arthritis Foundation. Caused by vibration of the tissues in the back of the throat while breathing, snoring can be mild, moderate or severe.  A moderate snorer is one who snores for part of every night, at least while sleeping on the back. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While both women and men snore, men are far more likely to do it on a regular basis.  There are certain factors that increase the likelihood of snoring: overweight, alcohol consumption, sedatives, smoking, and sleeping on the back.  All of these things relax the tissue in the back of the throat, allowing it to collapse upon itself and vibrate when breathing in.  Allergies can swell up the tissues in the back of the throat, causing snoring, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To restore peace and hopefully spend the night together again:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Lose Weight.  The more overweight you are, the more likely you are to snore.  Even a modest weight loss will decrease your chances.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Just Say No to alcohol before bedtime.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Avoid Sedatives such as sleeping pills.  They make help you to sleep, but they will relax the throat tissues and make your partner’s night miserable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Stop Smoking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Try Position Training.  People tend to snore less while on their sides than on their backs.  Ask your partner to gently nudge you to your side if you’re snoring while on your back.  Or sew a pocket in your pajama top, where it hits between the shoulder blades.  Then put a tennis ball in the pocket.  Every time you turn on your back, you’ll automatically turn back over on your side.  Many people find that it’s not too long before they don’t need the ball to remind them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Elevate Your Head by elevating the head of the bed on blocks.  Elevating the entire torso (not just the head) can minimize snoring.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Take Antihistamines, if allergies are contributing to your snoring.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Think Twice before consenting to surgery.  There are several procedures to open the nasal passages and reduce the tissue in the back of the throat—and to supposedly quell snoring.  But these are not foolproof options.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Buy Earplugs for your partner.  These can help to minimize interrupted sleep.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If your snoring is interrupted by absence of breathing for ten or more seconds, followed by snorts or gasps for air (as reported by your partner), or if you have frequent daytime sleepiness, consult your health care provider.  You may have a more serious condition called sleep apnea. Dermatitis is a skin condition that causes areas of dry, red, itchy skin.  There are several kinds of dermatitis, but one of the most common is a chronic dermatitis called “atopic dermatitis.”  This condition often begins in childhood.  Those with this problem often have a family history of allergies, asthma or hayfever.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is no cure for this dermatitis, but treatment consists of identifying the factors that make the skin condition flare up and avoiding those things as much as possible.  Some of the things that commonly trigger dermatitis are irritants such as soaps, detergents, dryer sheets, or wool or other scratchy fabrics.  Allergens can also wreak havoc with dermatitis.  Common allergens are metals such as nickel, rubber, perfume, dust mites, and hair dyes.  Food allergies can be a cause of dermatitis in children, but less commonly in adults.&lt;br /&gt;For some reason, those with atopic dermatitis are unable to hold moisture in their skin.  This results in dry, itchy, and inflamed skin that is susceptible to becoming infected.  Trying to maintain as much moisture in the skin is another important aspect of dermatitis care.&lt;br /&gt;No matter the type of eczema, these measures will help:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Go Easy on Showers.  Keep them short and use lukewarm water. If you bathe, add colloidal oatmeal such as Aveeno to the bath. Soap up with a mild soap such as Dove, Olay or Basis.  Or try a non-soap cleanser such as Cetaphil.   Avoid scrubbing your body with washcloths, and pat dry rather than rubbing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Apply Lotion Immediately after a bath or shower to hold moisture in your skin.  Try a lotion like Eucerin, Keri, Lubriderm Lotion or Moisturel Lotion.  If you need more moisture, try a cream such as Lubriderm Cream, Purpose or Moisturel Cream.  Maximum moisture is provided by ointments such as Nivea, Eucerin or Aquaphor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Select Antiperspirants Carefully.  Many antiperspirants contain metallic salts which can trigger dermatitis.  Avoid those with ingredients such as aluminum chloride, aluminum sulfate and zirconium cholorohydrate.  A good choice is a product called Aqueous Zephiran, which can be found in drugstores.  Or use an organic product such as Toms of Maine, which is less irritating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Wear Anti-Itch Clothing, such as cotton.  Avoid wool or synthetic fabrics and tight-fitting clothing, which can make itching worse.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Keep Nails Short, so that if you accidentally scratch your skin, you don’t leave sores which can become infected.  And avoid artificial nails or fingernail extenders, which can cause dermatitis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   If Your Skin is Oozing, try cold compresses.  Some dermatologists recommend iced milk rather than ice water.  Apply the milk with a gauze pad or cotton ball to irritated skin, reapplying every few minutes for about 10 minutes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   For Relieving Itch, try over the counter hydrocortisone, calamine lotion, Sarna, or an emollient that contains urea, such as Carmol 20.  Lac-Hydrin or Aqua Lacten. contain lactic acid, another soothing lotion. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   If You Have a Dust Mite Allergy, enclose mattress and pillow in plastic casings.  And wash bedding, including quilt, frequently in hot water.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  Use Special Care With Laundry.  Use a perfume and color free detergent and add an extra rinse to the wash.  Avoid dryer fabric softener sheets, which are notorious for causing dermatitis flare-ups.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   If Your Skin is Susceptible to Infections, avoid antibacterial cleansers or Neosporin ointment.  These things can make the condition worse.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Use White Toilet Tissue and other paper products that touch your skin.  Dyes in colored products can be irritating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Avoid Cosmetics or use hypoallergenic ones.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   If You Swim in a Pool, rinse immediately after exiting the pool and rinse off with cool water. It happens most frequently to those who live in dry, cold climates where forced air heat and woodstoves suck the moisture out of the air.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you want to feel less like a prickly pear cactus, try these tips:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Use Water Wisely.  Popular magazines tell you to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day to hydrate your skin “from the inside out.”  But dry skin is seldom the result of a lack of water inside your body.  Only if you’re totally dehydrated will your skin dry out.  Instead of concentrating on drinking your water, bathe in it to absorb moisture into your skin.  Try an every-other-day bath in lukewarm water (hot water dries skin further) for 15 minutes.  Put a few drops of scented oil in the tub, or try an oatmeal bath with Aveeno colloidal oatmeal.  Or make your own by pulverizing oatmeal in your blender.  Oatmeal works to soothe and cleanse the skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Use Super-fatted Soap.  Most soaps contain lye, which acts as a cleanser.  But it’s irritating to dry skin.  Look for a super-fatted soap like Dove, Basis or Neutrogena for a less drying result.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Lock the Moisture In after a bath with a moisturizer.  People naturally think that a moisturizer replaces oil in the skin, but the most important thing it does is to trap water in your skin.  For best results after bathing, pat your body partly dry, then apply moisturizer on damp skin.  What to look for in a moisturizer?  It doesn’t have to be expensive.  Most products do just about the same thing.  But an emollient has the most oil, followed by creams, then lotions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Turn the Heat Down.  This will prevent constant running of the furnace and less drying of the air. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Add Humidity to the air with a pot of water on the woodstove or a humidifier in your bedroom. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Wear Loose, Natural Fiber Clothing to allow your skin to breathe and absorb perspiration. Of these persons, about 10-30% develop a form of arthritis called “psoriatic arthritis,” which causes swelling, stiffness, and pain around the joints.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Although some scientists believe that psoriasis is a disorder of the immune system, this has not been proven.  It is thought to be inherited, since many times a person who is affected can relate a family history of psoriasis. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What happens when a person has psoriasis?  For some reason, the skin cells develop more quickly than normal.  While a normal skin cell takes about 28 days to mature, the skin cells in someone with psoriasis mature in about 4 days.  This causes a buildup of silvery, scaly skin cells called “plaques”.  Plaques itch and when scratched off, leave skin red, inflamed, and sometimes even bleeding, beneath. &lt;br /&gt;Certain factors can trigger an outbreak of psoriasis lesions:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        An injury to the skin, whether a scratch, cut or sunburn&lt;br /&gt;·        Emotional stress&lt;br /&gt;·        Certain infections such as strep or yeast&lt;br /&gt;·        Certain medications, such as some blood pressure or heart medications&lt;br /&gt;·        Dietary sensitivities may play a part, although this is not proven&lt;br /&gt;·        Food allergies may cause outbreaks in some persons&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While there is no cure for psoriasis, there are many things that you can do to control the situation.  Some of them are:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Prevent Skin Injuries as much as possible.  Sometimes even the smallest things, like shaving your face or wearing a bra, eyeglasses, or goggles that cause friction—can result in a problem.  Treat your skin gently.  Use an electric shaver rather than a razor, wear a cotton sports bra, avoid tight clothing.  And cut your nails to prevent scratching.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Keep Your Skin Lubricated to avoid dryness and cracking and prevent scaling, as well as to moisturize scales that are present.  Eucerin cream or a moisturizer that contains lactic acid seem to work best for those with psoriasis.  The best way to absorb a moisturizer is to bathe first, allowing your skin to soak up the water.  Then pat yourself partially dry and apply moisturizer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Coal Tar Products such as shampoos and soaps have been used for many years as a medicine to slow down the buildup of skin cells and reduce inflammation and itching.  Recently, products containing tar have been under scrutiny as a link to skin cancer, but psoriasis experts maintain that the amount of coal tar found in over the counter products is safe and very effective.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Topical Steroid Creams such as 1% hydrocortisone, can be purchased over the counter and can effectively help clear skin up.  Excess use of this product should be avoided, though, because it can thin skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Sunlight can do wonders for those who have psoriasis, because it helps your body to produce vitamin D, which may be effective in controlling the disease.  But the use of sunscreen prevents the ultraviolet rays from reaching your skin, so soak up 15 minutes of sunshine before applying sunscreen. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many doctors prescribe ultraviolet light treatments with a special lamp used at home or in a psoriasis clinic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Decrease Emotional Stress by exercising, meditating, relaxation tapes or just finding time for fun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Limit or Eliminate Alcohol Intake.  Although not known why, alcohol makes psoriasis worse, especially in men.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Dietary Changes may help some people with psoriasis.  Two foods associated with this disease are tomato products and gluten (found in wheat, rye and barley).  Try eliminating these things to see if psoriasis improves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some foods to include in the diet are fatty fishes such as salmon, mackerel and tuna, vitamin D enriched foods such as milk, and flaxseed oil.  All of these things have been linked with improvement in psoriasis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Supplements to Consider include fish oil, folic acid and burdock root. The people who carry staph in their nostrils don’t necessarily develop boils, but the bacteria can spread to others.  It enters the skin through a break (even tiny cuts or chafing can cause a break) and infects a hair follicle or plugged oil gland.  Your body’s immune system tries to fight the bacteria with white blood cells, which produces pus.  The pus-filled abscess rises up from the skin, causing redness and pain.  If bacteria from the boil enter your bloodstream, you can develop a serious infection called “blood poisoning.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Boils can be very painful—and very ugly.  They occur most commonly in persons with diabetes or other illnesses that impair the immune system.  If you get boils repeatedly, it may be a sign of another illness, and should be checked out by your health care provider. &lt;br /&gt;At the first sign of a boil:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Apply a Warm Compress to the boil.  This will help it to come to a head and drain, which will allow it to heal.  Use a warm wet washcloth over the boil for 20-30 minutes three or four times daily.  It may take several days to bring the boil to a head.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   If The Boil Doesn’t Open, you can prick it with a sterilized needle (hold the needle over a hot flame until it turns red), then gently squeeze the pus from the boil.  Some doctors advise against this though, especially if you have diabetes and are more prone to complications from infections.  Use your own judgement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Apply Antibiotic Ointment, such as Bacitracin or Neosporin to the open area. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   While the Boil is Draining, keep it clean with an antibacterial soap such as Dial.  And wash your hands after touching the area, especially prior to preparing food.  Staph bacteria in food can cause food poisoning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Reduce the Likelihood of developing boils by using an antibacterial soap whenever you shower.  If you’re prone to boils, this may not entirely prevent their occurrence but may decrease their frequency.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   If Boils Repeatedly Crop up in Your Family, see your health care provider.  It may be that one or more family member has staph growing in the nose. Now you have a blistery, itchy rash.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Poison ivy and poison oak are two types of plants that can cause allergic contact dermatitis (a skin rash caused by contact with something you’re allergic to).  About 85% of people will develop an allergy to these plants if exposed to them.  Sometimes it takes several encounters with poison ivy or oak to build up sensitivity to it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The cause of the problem is a chemical in the sap of the plant called urushiol.  This means that if you touch poison ivy or oak and the plant is not damaged, you won’t develop a rash.  But there are many things that cause broken leaves or holes in the plants, such as wind or animals, or even insects.  This allows the sap to leak out of the plants and penetrate your skin.  Within 12-48 hours, a rash, blisters and itching will occur.  New blisters may appear for up to a week after the first; this is because urushiol penetrates areas with thicker skin more slowly than those with thin skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Urushiol can also stick to pets and other objects, such as balls, clothing and garden tools.  Contact with these objects can cause a rash, even years later—if they are not cleaned off.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you know that you’ve had contact with poison ivy or poison oak, you can lessen the outbreak of rash by cleaning your skin off as quickly as possible.  Use rubbing alcohol followed by water first, then take a shower with soap and water.  Do not use soap before you’ve washed first with water, because the soap is slippery and can move the urushiol over your body, worsening the rash.  And don’t return to the woods after using alcohol, because it can remove your body’s natural skin protection, making another contact with poison ivy sap penetrate even more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Clean clothing, tools, or other objects with alcohol and water.  Use gloves while handling these objects, then throw them away.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you do develop a skin rash, these things can help:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Soak in Oatmeal- A bath with colloidal oatmeal such as Aveeno, can soothe the itch and help to dry up the blisters.  Make sure to use lukewarm or cool water, since hot water can worsen the rash.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Use Domeboro Solution to dry the blisters up and relieve itching and crusting.  You can purchase tablets or powder over the counter to make a solution to apply to your rash.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Rub an Ice Cube over your rash and allow to air dry, or allow a fan to blow over your skin.  This will cool and dry the rash and help to relieve itching.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  Apply Calamine Lotion to the rash after using one of the cooling methods above. Use plain lotion, as other ingredients can make the rash worse in some people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Topical Corticosteroids such as 1% hydrocortisone can also be used.  This helps the itching but does not dry out the rash.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Over the Counter Antihistamines taken orally, such as Benadryl, can help with severe itching.  But this medication will likely make you drowsy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Try Not to Scratch.  Since blisters don’t contain urushiol, touching the rash will not spread it to other body parts—nor to other people. In fact, foot pain can make you change how you walk, causing stress on other parts of your body such as your legs, hips and spine.  This change in gait can lead to back pain and even a fall.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What are some of the causes and solutions for foot ache? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Pressure Caused by Shoes: As you age, your feet tend to spread, causing them to become larger.  Sometimes they change enough in size that your shoe size is larger than you think.  It’s important to have your feet measured each time you buy shoes to assure a good fit.  The upper part of your shoes should correspond with your foot shape and be made of soft and flexible material. Shoes with narrow toes, high heels, and thin soles should be avoided, as they can cause friction against your feet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Inadequate Arch Support:  With time, the bottoms of your feet lose their fatty pads and your ligaments and tendons lose elasticity.   You may need shoes with additional arch support or inserts put into your shoes to support your arches and protect your soles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  Swelling related to pregnancy or menstrual periods, prolonged standing at work, overweight or inactivity, temperature changes, and certain medications is the root of many foot aches.  Improving the circulation to the feet can help to relieve swelling and foot pain.  These measures can help:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Raise your feet when you’re sitting down on a stool or with a recliner.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wiggle your toes for a few minutes every hour while sitting.  Move your ankles in circles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Warm footbaths&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Gentle massage&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stretching, walking, and exercise.  Avoid activities that are hard on the feet, such as running and jumping.  And wear well fitting athletic shoes while exercising.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You should also avoid smoking, long periods of sitting, and tight socks/shoes. Legs should never be crossed.  All of these things reduce blood flow to the feet.&lt;br /&gt;   Medical Conditions can cause foot aches, too.  Diabetes and high blood pressure can reduce circulation to the feet (see above measures for improving circulation).  Arthritic conditions such as osteoarthritis and gout and diseases that affect the muscles, such as Parkinson’s Disease, can affect the feet, too.  Gentle massage and over the counter pain relievers can help if you have one of these conditions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;  Injury or Stress to the feet from high impact exercise such as running or extremely active jobs such as police work or nursing are foot ache culprits. But allergies can be more than annoying at times—they can actually be life threatening.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why do people get allergies? The answer is not entirely understood, but it seems that a combination of inherited factors and exposure factors play a part. If you have a genetic tendency for an allergy to beestings but you’re never stung by a bee, you won’t develop an allergy to bees. But with the same genetic tendency, one or more beestings will provoke your body to develop an allergic response.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Allergies are a result of your body’s immune system trying to protect you from invaders. Sometimes it mistakes harmless substances, such as dust, pollen or animal dander as a threat. Then certain cells within your body release a type of chemical to destroy them. This chemical is called “histamine.” It results in symptoms such as itching, sneezing, congestion, hives and skin rashes. In severe cases, people develop a condition caused “anaphylaxis.” In this life-threatening situation, the throat swells up, blood pressure drops, and the body goes into shock. Anaphylaxis requires emergency medical care.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are many kinds of allergies. You can be allergic to things in the environment such as pollens, dust, mold, bees, and flowers, or to chemicals, animals, latex (used to make products such as balloons, gloves and condoms), and even medicines.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The first step in treating an allergy is to identify what you’re allergic to. This isn’t always easy to do by yourself, because it’s hard to isolate yourself from everything except one thing at a time to see if you have an allergic reaction to it. The best way to identify specific allergies is to be tested by a doctor who does skin testing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you already know or suspect what you’re allergic to, you can often make lifestyle changes to avoid exposure to the offending substance as much as possible:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For Dust or Dust Mite Allergies, eliminate clutter in your hom e. Piles of books, magazines and newspapers, stuffed animals, and knick-knacks are prime dust collectors. Drapes and carpeting are more dust laden than bare flooring and blinds, no matter how much you vacuum.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dust can collect on your bed and bedding, too. To minimize exposure, use protective vinyl mattress and pillow covers. Bedding, including blankets, should be washed in hot water weekly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Change filters in central heating and air conditioning systems often. You can consider purchasing a HEPA air filter to install in these systems or you can find freestanding HEPA air filtering machines. These filters are very effective in removing dust, as well as pollen, animal dander and smoke.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pollen Allergies can be avoided by staying inside during high pollen count days (if possible), or at least during the early morning hours, when pollen counts are highest. To learn the daily pollen count in your area, call the Pollen Forecast Hotline (1-800-POLLENS). By stating your zip code or state abbreviation, you’ll be informed of which plants are pollinating in your area and whether the pollen count is high, medium or low.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When inside, keep the windows closed if possible, and turn on the air conditioner if you have one. Use air conditioning in your car as well. Do not hang laundry outside to dry, where it can collect pollen. And when you’re outside, wear wrap-around sunglasses to protect your eyes from pollen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For Allergies to Mold, eliminate moist areas where mold can grow. Use glass or plastic shower doors rather than plastic shower curtain liners whenever possible, or wash liners every few weeks in hot water and a little bleach. Wicker plant containers frequently grow mold; consider moving your plants to containers made of another material. Wicker porch furniture should be protected from the outdoor elements, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you suspect your air conditioning system is growing mold, have it inspected and cleaned.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Allergies to pets, medications, and smoke can be minimized by avoiding the offending allergen. If you must have a pet, bathe it weekly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the counter allergy medications contain antihistamines, which will minimize symptoms of all kinds of allergies. But many of these can make you drowsy. Some natural allergy fighters are:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Garlic- reduces the inflammatory reaction experienced with allergies&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stinging nettle- an old herbal remedy that can treat nasal and respiratory symptoms&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Feverfew capsules can help relieve allergic symptoms, but should not be used by pregnant or nursing women&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Horseradish or wasabi, a Japanese variety of horseradish, can clear your sinuses&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vitamin C acts as a natural antihistamine. Take 500 mg. twice a day, or better yet, eat foods high in vitamin C, such as citrus fruits, bell peppers, kiwifruit, mango, guava, melon, or berries are among these vitamin C rich foods.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you’ve experienced an allergic reaction to a food such as shellfish, or to bee or wasp stings, consider asking your health care provider for an “epinephrine pen.” This is a pre-drawn syringe of medication that you can give yourself if you develop severe allergic symptoms, such as hives, throat swelling, or trouble breathing. You close your eyes, and the next thing you know, several hours have passed. You look like a lobster!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Not only do sunburns hurt, they can cause lasting damage to your skin. Ultraviolet rays can damage blood vessels and tear down the elastic fibers in your skin, causing premature wrinkling. And excessive sun exposure, especially when you’re young, can lead to melanoma, a life-threatening skin cancer, as well as other skin cancers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The best thing to do in the sun is to prevent sunburn. Avoid sun exposure during the hours of greatest ultraviolet ray intensity, which are between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. When you’re out in the sun, wear a sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your eyes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;Medication Alert&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Certain types of medications can cause sensitivity to the sun. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="color:#cc0000;"&gt;Take extra precautions in the sun when using any of these:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Birth control pills&lt;br /&gt;Certain antibiotics&lt;br /&gt;Retin-A for skin&lt;br /&gt;Diabetes medication&lt;br /&gt;Some diuretics&lt;br /&gt;Medicated soaps &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you do become burned try the following:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Milk Bath can soothe skin greatly. Dip a cotton ball or gauze into cool or room temperature milk and apply to skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cool Compresses of a wet washcloth wrapped around a bag of frozen vegetables can be rubbed gently over red skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vinegar added to a tub of lukewarm water is very effective. Use one cup of white cider vinegar. Or try baking soda and cornstarch (1/4 cup of each) or colloidal oatmeal such as Aveeno.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Drink Lots of Water to replace fluids lost by dehydration in the sun.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Use Ibuprofen to Reduce Inflammation and swelling of skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consume Plenty of Vitamin E Rich Foods such as whole grains, sunflower and soybean oil and nuts. The most common cause of this condition is overuse.  If you haven’t exercised for awhile, then begin a vigorous program of exercise, or if you perform an activity or movement repeatedly (such as hitting a ball with a tennis racquet or swinging a golf club), you may develop tendonitis. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Middle-aged and older persons are more susceptible to tendonitis.  This is thought to be because of changes in the blood vessels that deliver nourishment to the tendons.  Another cause might be because tendons lose their elasticity with age.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Common areas to develop tendonitis are in the tendons near the shoulders, wrists, hips, elbows, knees, and heels.  Symptoms of tendonitis include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pain along a tendon close to a joint (shoulder, wrist, hip, elbow, knee, heels)&lt;br /&gt;Pain increases with activity&lt;br /&gt;Pain worsens at night, often while sleeping&lt;br /&gt;Skin over the tendon may be warm or red&lt;br /&gt;Treatment of tendonitis is to reduce the inflammation of the tendon and reduce the pain.  You can do the following things at home:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Rest the tendon by avoiding activities that caused the pain.&lt;br /&gt;  &lt;br /&gt;   Immobilize the Tendon if possible with a splint or brace.  You can buy “tennis elbow” and other types of braces and splints for tendons at a pharmacy or medical supply store.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Over the Counter Anti-Inflammatory Medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, can reduce inflammation and ease the pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Topical Analgesics may provide some relief (see “Arthritis” for more information).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Ice your tendon for 15 minutes at least 3 times per day (don’t apply ice directly to skin).  After the first few days, the application of heat may help to relax the tendon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See your health care provider if symptoms don’t begin to subside after a week or two of treatment, or if pain is severe or accompanied by fever. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The key to avoiding repeated episodes of tendonitis is to vary exercises to avoid repetitive motions.  For example, try swimming rather than tennis. For many women, this is just a mild discomfort.  But for some, it can be very uncomfortable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What causes cramps?  The culprit is a hormone called “prostaglandin.”  Prostaglandin helps the uterus to contract and shed its lining to create the menstrual flow.  These contractions are what women experience as cramps.&lt;br /&gt;Those women who have higher levels of prostaglandin have more severe cramps.  And younger women tend to have more severe cramps than those over 25, as a rule. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most women can relieve cramps with simple home treatment.  But if these measures don’t help and you have cramps so painful that you can’t go to school or work, or if they are accompanied by heavy bleeding, nausea and vomiting or diarrhea—you should seek the advice of your health care provider.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Home treatment of cramps includes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Heat, whether applied to your abdomen with a hot water bottle or heating pad, or through a soak in a hot tub, can ease the pain of cramps.  This is because heat increases the blood flow to the uterus.  Some women find that sipping on hot drinks such as herbal tea (raspberry is a good choice for cramps) or broth helps, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Gentle Massage of the abdomen with oil stimulates circulation, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Exercise, as painful as it sounds, actually helps ease pain by improving circulation to the pelvic organs.  It can also relieve muscle tension.  Try walking, swimming, or yoga.  If you can’t bear the thought of exercise, simple stretching will help.  One good exercise is to sit back in a chair with your feet flat on the ground.  Then lean forward, and wrap your arms around your lower legs.  Relax and hold the position for as long as possible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Try the Dairy Cure.  Many studies have shown that 1,000-1,300 mg. of daily calcium helps to relieve menstrual cramps.  Calcium is best consumed through milk and other dairy products such as cheese and yogurt, but if you can’t get enough calcium this way, then consider a supplement.  Calcium should be taken at all times of the month, not just during your period, for maximum relief.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Magnesium helps your body to absorb calcium and also may help to decrease menstrual cramps.  Foods rich in magnesium include whole grains, salmon, tofu, vegetables and nuts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Medications such as ibuprofen and naproxyn sodium relieve menstrual cramps, especially if taken at the first sign of pain (even the day before your period starts) and continued for the first day or two following the start of your menstrual flow.&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;

The reduction of bone mass leaves you susceptible to fractures of the bone, especially of the hip, spine and wrist. This condition affects more women than men; approximately 85% of those with osteoporosis are female. This is likely because women are generally smaller than men and have lower bone mass to start with.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How does osteoporosis occur? Our bones are constantly regenerating. The body uses old bone for its supply of calcium (an essential mineral) and rebuilds new bone. But this regeneration process slows down after age 35. Calcium is still needed by the body, but our body is less effective in building new bone to replace the old bone. As a result, our bones may become brittle and thin. Women who have reached menopause are at greater risk of osteoporosis because they have less estrogen, a hormone that protects against bone loss.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some people are at greater risk for osteoporosis than others. Those at increased risk include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Women, especially postmenopausal&lt;br /&gt;Small-boned or thin persons&lt;br /&gt;Smokers&lt;br /&gt;Heavy users of alcoholic beverages&lt;br /&gt;Those with a family history of osteoporosis&lt;br /&gt;People who are taking steroid medications&lt;br /&gt;Sedentary people&lt;br /&gt;Those whose diets are deficient in calcium and Vitamin D&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many people aren’t aware that they have osteoporosis until they’ve suffered a fracture, often of the hip, which is the most common fracture affecting older women. In fact, a woman’s risk of hip fracture is greater than her risk of breast, ovarian and uterine cancer combined. Because of this risk, many doctors believe that women should have a “bone density” test at age 65 or at menopause if you have any risk factors for osteoporosis. This test is a noninvasive test that can indicate your risk of bone fractures.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But there are lifestyle changes you can make well before this age to decrease your risk of osteoporosis. These include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consumption of Calcium, at least 1000 mg daily until menopause, then 1200 mg. It may be difficult to get enough calcium through the diet, so you may want to consider using a supplement. Most experts believe that supplements containing calcium citrate or calcium carbonate are best. While calcium citrate is most absorbable and can be taken on an empty stomach, calcium carbonate has a greater amount of calcium per pill. It must, however, be taken with meals as it is not as easily absorbed by the body.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vitamin D, 400-800 IU are needed to help your body to absorb calcium. A moderate exposure to sunlight generally provides enough Vitamin D, but as you age you are less likely to be able to make Vitamin D from sun exposure. Some dairy products, such as milk, are fortified with vitamin D. One cup of milk has 100 IUs of Vitamin D. Salmon, herring, mackerel and sardines are also good dietary sources of this vitamin. Check your vitamins or calcium supplements for addition of vitamin D, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Limit Alcohol Consumption since excess alcohol use contributes to the likelihood of developing osteoporosis. Some studies, however, have linked moderate alcohol consumption with higher bone density.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stop Smoking since this habit increases bone loss.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Weight Bearing Exercise, such as walking, dancing, aerobics, stair-climbing, and weight training, can reduce the risk of bone loss.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ask Your Doctor if any of your medications increase your risk of osteoporosis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Supplements Containing Soy Isoflavones may help to prevent osteoporosis, although this has not been confirmed by multiple scientific studies.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you’ve been diagnosed with osteoporosis, you may want to take additional precautions, including:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Taking Steps to Prevent Falls, such as having your hearing and vision checked regularly, wearing slippers or shoes with a non-skid sole, and avoiding the use of throw rugs in your home. Exercises that improve balance and coordination can also help you to prevent falls. One such exercise is Tai Chi.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ask Your Health Care Provider About Hip Protectors. The holidays were hectic, my wife hospitalized, and a little laziness on my part, but we're back.&lt;br /&gt;Let's hope someone wasn't a pain in the neck for you this Holiday season.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Neck Pain&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you’ve ever experienced neck pain, you’ll understand the expression “pain in the neck.” Neck pain can make your whole body hurt.&lt;br /&gt;The neck is very vulnerable to pain not only because it moves in so many directions, making it subject to overextension and wear and tear problems, but because it holds up a very heavy object—your head.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most neck pain is a result of overuse, such as spending too many hours hunched over a computer, sewing, or the wheel of a car. If you overuse your neck muscles frequently, you can develop a chronic neck pain condition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wear and tear problems that occur with aging, such as osteoarthritis and disk degeneration, can affect the neck. And injury such as whiplash, where the head is jerked forward and back, can stretch the tissues of the neck, causing inflammation and pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have neck pain, you may know what caused it. But if it came on suddenly, and is accompanied by a fever, or if you can’t bend your chin down toward your chest, seek medical care immediately. Likewise if you have shooting pain going down your arm, weakness in your arm or leg, or loss of bladder or bowel control.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most cases of neck pain will resolve in a few weeks with treatment at home:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ice may be applied to the neck for 15-20 minutes at least four times a day. Avoid heat because it can aggravate the inflammation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the Counter Pain Medications that also relieve inflammation, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or naproxen sodium (Aleve) can help. Acetaminophen will reduce pain but not inflammation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Topical Analgesics may provide relief, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Short-Term Immobilization with a soft cervical collar that supports your neck and reduces strain on your muscles may help. You can find a cervical collar in your drugstore or pharmacy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since neck pain is often associated with poor posture, you can minimize your chances of developing this condition by taking the following steps:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Take breaks frequently when doing something that involves bending of the neck. Get up, move around, and stretch. Shrug your shoulders, do arm rolls, pull your shoulders back toward your spine and hold, then release.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Adjust your work and work station so that your shoulders aren’t hunched.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Avoid positions that cause neck strain such as tucking the phone between your ear and shoulder.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try not to sleep on your stomach as this can put stress on your neck.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;© Copyright 2005 Goldenstar Enterprises All Rights Reserved&lt;br /&gt;www.myhomecures.com&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;

While most of these cases are mild and resolve without medical treatment, there are many hospitalizations and even some deaths each year related to foodborne diseases. Persons who are most susceptible to severe illness from food poisoning are the very young, the elderly, and those who have conditions that affect the immune system.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It’s difficult to identify whether an illness is really food poisoning, and if so—what kind of poisoning. There are over 250 different diseases caused by foods. Many of them cause similar symptoms because the causative germ enters the body through the gastrointestinal route. Fever, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, and abdominal cramps are symptoms of many foodborne illnesses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How does food become infected with germs that cause food poisoning? There are many ways for this to happen as food is processed and prepared:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Harmful germs can live in the bodies of healthy animals (usually in the intestines). When the animals are slaughtered, there is contact with the intestinal bacteria and the meat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fruits and vegetables can become contaminated by water that contains animal manure or human sewage, either through irrigation or washing during processing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oysters and shellfish can contain bacteria from the sea water or from human sewage dumped into the sea.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;People who are infected with disease can spread germs by handling food without washing their hands.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Germs can be transferred from one food to another by using a common knife or cutting board to prepare both foods without washing the utensil or board in between uses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Food that is handled improperly, such as food that is left out instead of refrigerated within a few hours after preparation, can rapidly grow harmful bacteria.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are certain foods that are more often associated with food poisoning than others. Any raw food of animal origin may be contaminated, such as raw poultry or meat, raw eggs, unpasteurized milk, and raw shellfish. Raw fruits and vegetables, especially sprouts, and unpasteurized fruit juice, can be a source of foodborne illness.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are many things you can do to prevent an attack of food poisoning:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cook meat, poultry and eggs thoroughly to kill bacteria. Check with a thermometer to assure correct temperature.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;FOOD TEMPERATURE&lt;br /&gt;Ground beef, veal, lamb, pork 160 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Ground chicken or turkey 160 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Beef, veal, lamb roasts and steaks 145 degrees (medium rare) to 170 degrees Fahrenheit (well done)&lt;br /&gt;Pork chops, roast, ribs 160-170 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Ham, cooked 140 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Ham, fresh 160 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Sausage, fresh 160 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Poultry, whole bird 180 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Poultry, breast 170 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Poultry, leg/thigh 180 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Eggs, fried or poached Until yolks and whites are firm&lt;br /&gt;Egg casseroles 160 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Egg sauces and custards 160 degrees Fahrenheit&lt;br /&gt;Fish Until it flakes with a fork&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Keep foods separate. Wash cutting boards and utensils that have touched raw meat or poultry.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Refrigerate leftovers within 4 hours of preparing to discourage bacterial growth. Don’t leave baby’s formula or juice at room temperature for many hours.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wash produce thoroughly to remove dirt and remove outermost leaves of lettuce or cabbage. Wash your hands before handling food, especially after using the restroom or changing a baby’s diaper.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Select restaurants carefully. These establishments are inspected by the local health department, and should have the inspection score posted in the restaurant. Check to see if staff and surroundings appear clean and if food is being handled properly (gloves or tongs instead of hands, for example). Order meats medium to well done and eggs firm.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you do become ill with food poisoning, the most important treatment is to replace fluids so that you don’t become dehydrated. Water or a rehydration fluid (see diarrhea) will help. Contact your health care provider if your illness includes a high fever (over 101.5 F, bloody stools, prolonged vomiting, signs of dehydration (dry mouth, decrease in urination, dizziness when standing up) or diarrhea that lasts for more than 3 days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you believe that you have food poisoning, report this to your local health department. Food outbreak investigations often start with a telephone call from a concerned person. Less commonly, knee pain may be caused by an infection in the knee, dislocation of the kneecap, or a cyst or tumor in the knee.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have an injury that causes immediate swelling or severe pain or inability to bear weight, see your healthcare provider immediately.  Otherwise, many knee problems clear up on their own with simple home treatment, including:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Rest your knee and avoid activities that aggravate the pain.  You can reduce stress on the knee by using a cane or walking stick in the hand opposite the sore knee.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Ice your painful knee, for 15 minutes every hour or two the first day.  After that, use ice at least 4 times per day.  Never put ice directly against the skin.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Elevate your Knee with a footstool or recliner when you’re sitting down.  You may also massage the knee gently to increase blood flow to the area (unless this causes pain).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Compress the Knee with an elastic bandage or sleeve that you can buy at a pharmacy or sporting goods store.  Compression helps to reduce the swelling that causes pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Over the Counter Anti-inflammatory Medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen can help to relieve swelling and pain.  Acetaminophen will help the pain, too, but won’t relieve swelling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For the first few days, avoid things that will increase swelling to the knee, such as hot showers or baths.  Alcoholic beverages should also be avoided.  After 48-72 hours, if swelling has improved, you may use moist heat (a wet warm washcloth) and begin gentle exercise to the knee to keep it from becoming stiff.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You should pass up any “pounding” sorts of exercise such as running, basketball, or tennis until your knee is no longer swollen or painful.  And if knee pain doesn’t resolve in a week, see your health care provider.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To prevent further episodes of knee pain, you should:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Stay Slim to reduce weight on the knee and reduce injuries&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Limber Up by stretching before you exercise&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Exercise Wisely by avoiding sports or activities that aggravate your knees.  Swimming, for example, may be better than jogging. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Protect Your Knees with properly supportive shoes and kneepads when indicated (such as when playing soccer)&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;

First, the tingling sensation in your lips, and then that awful red spot. It blisters, oozes, and finally crusts over and goes away. It’s another cold sore.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What are these unsightly sores, and what can you do about them? Unfortunately, you can’t cure or entirely prevent cold sores, because they’re caused by a virus that stays in your body all of the time. When you become infected with the herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV 1), generally as a child or young adult, you develop a cold sore, and then after it heals, the virus stays present in your skin or nerve tissue for life. Subsequent outbreaks of cold sores are often caused by emotional stress, overexposure to the sun, a fever, or hormonal changes during menstruation or pregnancy.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cold sores are passed from one person to another by direct contact. This means that the sore must touch the other person, often by kissing or oral sex. You can even spread a sore from your mouth to other parts of your own body, such as your eyes. To prevent spread of cold sores, you should wash your hands frequently, especially after touching the sore, and avoid kissing and oral sex during outbreaks. You should also avoid sharing eating utensils, razors and towels.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cold sores usually last for about a week. They’re often preceded by a tingling or itchy sensation, called a “prodrome.” Within a few hours, you develop a small reddened area on your outer lips or sometimes around your nose (less frequently your gums or roof of the mouth). The red spot fills with fluid, making a blister. Sometimes, small blisters are clustered together. Within a day, the blister breaks, causing a crusty scab.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Since cold sores clear up on their own without treatment, home care consists of lessening the discomfort of an outbreak and trying to prevent reoccurrence. To lessen the pain of a cold sore:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Use Cold or Heat&lt;/strong&gt;: Ice or warm compresses applied to the blisters may ease the pain.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Try an Over the Counter Pain Reliever&lt;/strong&gt; such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Use Creams&lt;/strong&gt;: Over the counter creams don’t usually speed healing, but they do provide comfort. One exception may be lemon balm cream. A study performed in Germany found that this cream cut the duration of symptoms by half, and also decreased the frequency of recurrences. Natural health practitioners recommend topical application of zinc to reduce symptoms, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Don’t Pick or Scratch&lt;/strong&gt; Your Cold Sore, as this can cause an infection.&lt;br /&gt;To prevent further outbreaks of cold sores, you might try to:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Avoid Triggers&lt;/strong&gt;- If you know what causes your cold sores, try to avoid these things. Reduce stress if possible, and try to stay out of the sun when you can. Apply sunblock to your lips and face when you’ll be exposed to the sun for long periods of time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Stay Healthy with a balanced diet&lt;/strong&gt;, regular sleep and daily exercise. A healthy immune system can protect you against many viruses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Dietary Changes and Supplementation&lt;/strong&gt;- While not all experts agree that diet or supplementation affects cold sore outbreaks, some believe that a diet high in lysine and low in arginine (two amino acids) can be helpful. Studies have shown that arginine is required by the herpes virus to thrive, and lysine can take its place within the body if there’s a higher ratio of lysine to arginine. Foods with this ratio include yogurt, cheeses, milk, apples, apricots, pears, fish, chicken, beef, legumes and tomatoes. Brewers yeast and wheat germ are also high in lysine, so encouraged. Foods especially high in arginine are chocolate, peanuts and almonds; these should be avoided. PMS is the monthly occurrence of symptoms severe enough to interfere with personal, social and work life.  Some of these symptoms include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anxiety, irritability, mood swings&lt;br /&gt;Bloating, weight gain&lt;br /&gt;Breast tenderness&lt;br /&gt;Headaches&lt;br /&gt;Food cravings&lt;br /&gt;Acne&lt;br /&gt;Cramping&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are a lot of theories about the cause of PMS but no definitive answer.  Most experts agree, though, that the likely cause is a hormonal imbalance during the two weeks prior to the menstrual period, when levels of estrogen are particularly high.  Nutrition and stress appear to play a part in PMS, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some women have such severe symptoms that they need to get medical treatment for PMS.  Before consulting with your health provider, it’s wise to keep a symptom diary to determine if you really have this condition.  Every day for three months, write down the symptoms that you are experiencing from the list above.  Is there a pattern?  If the symptoms follow a predictable pattern of occurring in the two weeks prior to your menstrual period, you may have PMS.  The following home treatments may help a lot:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Dietary Changes are a good place to begin. The most helpful:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Some experts believe that fatty foods increase PMS symptoms.  So substitute lean meats and fish for fatty cuts of beef, lamb and pork and choose low fat dairy products and corn and safflower oil over butter, ice cream, and whole milk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Food cravings are a common PMS symptom, but unfortunately the cravings are often for foods that only irritate the situation such as sweets and salty snacks.  Complex carbohydrates such as whole grains, pasta, cereal and bagels are a better choice to keep your blood sugar stable.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Avoid caffeine-laden foods and drinks such as cola, tea, coffee and chocolate.  Caffeine is a stimulant and can increase feelings of anxiety and irritability.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Ban the salt, because salt can contribute to bloating.  Snack crackers, lunch meats and cured meats like bacon, hot dogs and sausage contain a lot of salt, as do salad dressing and many cheeses.  Read the labels on packaged food and choose fresh products such as fresh fruits and vegetables whenever possible.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Get plenty of calcium with low fat milk and yogurt, green leafy veggies, beans, peas and tofu.   1,200 mg. of calcium daily will help to reduce many premenstrual symptoms.  And don’t forget to consume magnesium in the form of spinach, tofu, rice bran, and certain fish such as halibut.  Magnesium helps your body to absorb calcium and is also thought to stabilize mood swings.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Limit or stay away entirely from alcohol.  Alcohol is a depressant and can contribute to the emotional symptoms of PMS.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Help PMS acne with vitamins A and D.  Good food sources are carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, spinach and vitamin D fortified low fat milk.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Mood swings can be stabilized by vitamin B6 foods such as fish, white meat of turkey and chicken, potatoes and bananas.&lt;br /&gt;·        Vitamin C rich foods such as broccoli, raw peppers, strawberries, cantaloupe, grapefruit, oranges, and Brussels sprouts will help to relieve PMS stress. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;·        Vitamin E in olive, safflower and grapeseed oils will help to relieve painful breasts and help with anxiety and depression.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Exercise Daily, if possible, to release “feel good” hormones called endorphins.  This will help to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and will also help with food cravings and circulation, which can reduce fluid retention.  If you can’t get out every day, try for 30 minutes 3-5 times a week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;   Relieve Stress with a hot bath, relaxation tapes, soothing music, or light reading. Things like hammering, turning the crank on a grinder, or even kneeling for a long period of time while gardening or washing the floor can cause this kind of stress. Doing these kinds of activities may eventually result in a painful joint condition called bursitis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Bursitis” means inflammation of the bursa. Bursa are small, fluid-filled sacs that are located in the areas of your body where your muscles, ligaments and tendons are stretched across bones and might rub against them if not cushioned. The smooth surface of bursa acts as such a cushion, and helps your joints to move easily.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bursa can become inflamed by repetitive motion, prolonged pressure (such as kneeling), or from being bumped in the same spot several times. Sometimes bursitis results from an infection, gout or arthritis. The areas of the body most often affected are your elbows, hips, knees, shoulders, ankles or heels—although any joint can develop this condition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The symptoms of bursitis are tenderness, burning or stiffness in the joint that worsens during or after movement, swelling, and warmth to the touch. Once in awhile, you may see skin redness in the inflamed area.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can often treat bursitis at home with these simple methods:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Rest the Affected Joint by avoiding the activities that aggravate it until you are pain free.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Cushion your Aching Joints with kneeling or elbow pads, cushion inserts in shoes, and cushions in chairs. Avoid resting inflamed elbows on hard surfaces.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Immobilize the Area with an elastic bandage or sling until the swelling goes down.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ice the Affected Joint for 20 minutes several times a day to reduce inflammation (be sure not to leave ice directly against skin).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Apply Heat once the redness and warmth have subsided to help relieve stiffness. Moist heat applied to the joint for 20 minutes several times a day tends to help more than dry heat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Use Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers that help to reduce inflammation, such as aspirin or ibuprofen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Topical Analgesics may help, too (see “Arthritis” for more information).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consider a “Memory Foam” Mattress if you tend to get repeated episodes of bursitis. Memory foam is a special kind of foam that conforms to your shape and takes the pressure off of your joints when you are lying down. The foam returns to its original shape once you get up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Supplements that may be helpful are MSM and boswellia (see “Arthritis” for more information). Growing evidence suggests that both of these supplements may reduce inflammation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With proper care, most cases of bursitis should clear up in a week or two. You should consult your health care provider if the following symptoms occur:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Disabling pain or pain that doesn’t diminish over 7-10 days&lt;br /&gt;Excessive swelling or a rash in the inflamed area&lt;br /&gt;Sharp or shooting pain in the joint&lt;br /&gt;Fever&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You can do these things to prevent repeat episodes of bursitis:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Stretch or Warm Up prior to physical activity&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Take Breaks from repetitive activities by resting or doing other activities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Exercise Your Muscles. Strong muscles can protect your joints. Everyone has hiccups now and then, and usually they are mild and short lived. But sometimes they can last for hours or occur repeatedly over a few days.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What causes hiccups? Often they are triggered by something that irritates the phrenic nerve (the nerve that connects the diaphragm to the brain). Generally, the source of irritation is not serious, but sometimes long-lasting hiccups (longer than 3 hours in children or 8 hours in adults) indicate a more serious illness. Some of the more common triggers of hiccups include:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Overeating or eating too quickly&lt;br /&gt;Drinking carbonated beverages&lt;br /&gt;Excessive consumption of alcohol&lt;br /&gt;Pregnancy&lt;br /&gt;Recent surgery, especially abdominal surgery&lt;br /&gt;Recent respiratory illness, such as pneumonia or pleurisy&lt;br /&gt;Medications that irritate the stomach&lt;br /&gt;Emotional reactions&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;More serious causes of hiccups include disorders of the stomach, esophagus, bowel, pancreas, and liver.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are numerous folk and home remedies to cure hiccups. Try one of the following:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Swallow Ten Sips of Cold Water Quickly, without interruption.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hold Your Breath and count to ten—or more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Douse Your Face with cold or ice water.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Breathe Rapidly, in and out, for a few seconds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Try Swallowing dry bread crumbs, crushed ice, or a teaspoon of sugar.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Gently Pull on Your Tongue, or push down the back of your tongue with your finger.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Push Both Fingers Into Your Ears for 20 seconds.&lt;br /&gt;With Eyes Closed, push gently on your eyeballs with your fingers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consult your health care provider if hiccups persist longer than 8 hours.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;© Copyright 2005 Goldenstar Enterprises&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;
