Guerrilla marketing is the strategy of using unconventional means to promote your business or product. Its aim is to generate street level buzz and excitement. Guerrilla marketing turns heads because it is unique, engaging and unexpected. It is popular with smaller businesses and startups because it’s a method of advertising that is based on creativity, time and effort rather than a big fiscal budget. But because it can be controversial and very effective, many larger companies have spent big on guerrilla marketing campaigns. But with the way social networking and advancements in technology are overtaking the way businesses interact with the public, are guerrilla marketing campaigns still current, relevant and worthwhile?

Gorilla Marketing

The more interesting and clever a guerrilla marketing campaign is, the more effective it will be. If it is a large abstract piece of art in a public place, for example, the more intriguing it is the more people will stop to look at it. If it’s something small and portable, like an object or pamphlet, the more exciting it is the more people will pass it on to their friends. A guerrilla campaign is very self-propagating in that respect, just like a video going viral online. Guerrilla marketing reached its peak of popularity in the 1980’s, but when it’s done well it is still highly effective, even today.

Is it Right for Your Business?

If you’re a small company with a fresh attitude and small advertising budget, you could explore a guerrilla marketing campaign. You just need a very creative and motivated team to pull it off. Almost any company can benefit from guerrilla marketing, but it especially suited for businesses that are against-the-grain and alternative to the mainstream in some way. It should fit the overall personality of your company.

What are the Benefits?

Besides being very inexpensive, there are other benefits to using guerrilla marketing tactics. You have the ability to directly engage with people on a face-to-face level, so it can be much more personal than online. You can more effectively target your audience by focusing on specific geographic locations. There are endless possibilities to how you can run your guerrilla marketing campaign, and you’re not limited to the medium of text, video or 2D images like you are on the web. You can go as big and as out-there are you want. When done right, guerrilla marketing has the potential to cause much more of a stir based on its uniqueness than any online campaign.

Online Integration

You don’t have to completely abandon online marketing for guerrilla. Guerrilla marketing is easy to integrate with your virtual strategy as well. Pull elements of style or message from your guerrilla campaign and integrate them into your social networking profiles and online ads. Things like QR codes enable people to instantly connect to more information on the web. An original and intriguing web address posted in the right places will encourage people to log on and find meaning. And with the way people are connected at all times, you may find you don’t have to do much work for your guerrilla campaign to go viral on the web. Any passerby can quickly snap a picture and post it online, and people will be likely to do that for your guerrilla campaign if it is very visually striking. With a well-designed guerrilla marketing campaign, your company’s name and idea can become famous or infamous for its originality and character.

1. Research and Preparation

So, you’ve been hard at work getting your business off the ground and now you want to tell the world about it. No doubt you’ve got a lot to say and it’s tempting to jump right in, but it’s crucial to do some research first or even your best-intentioned business blogging efforts will be in vain. Take a look at other blogs in your industry, and identify the most successful ones. What are they writing about? How do they interact with readers? What are their selling points? Asking these questions will help you identify what works and what doesn’t, and give you the opportunity to decide how you’d like to differentiate your business blog from those of your competitors.

Decide what you want to achieve with your business blog – are you looking to boost online sales or improve brand awareness? It is helpful to identify your objectives and set some goals for yourself so you can produce a consistent, focused blog that reflects well on your business.

Blogging... It's not rocket surgery.

2. Quality Posts

Once you’ve done your research, it’s time to get to the exciting stuff – writing your first blog post. Everyone has their own style of writing, and there’s no clear-cut “right way” to do this, but there are plenty of guidelines to follow to ensure your readers will come back for more. When promoting a business through a blog, your writing will serve as the voice of your company, and it’s important to accurately reflect the personality of the brand – this will vary according to your industry, but a professional, conversational tone usually goes over well.

Spelling and grammar are important too – even a small typo can make your blog look really unprofessional, so be sure to check each post before it goes live. Provide your readers with content that is informative, entertaining or both, and don’t be afraid to include engaging media like video clips and images.

3. Finding Readers

Once you’ve published that top-notch business blog post, you’ve got to tell people about it! Notify your industry contacts of your new blog, share it on the appropriate social networking platforms and consider adding a link to your email signature.

4. Interaction and Link Sharing

The way you interact with your readers and other websites goes a long way to establish the credibility of your business blog. Including links to other useful, high quality sites is a good way of building trust and could even open you up to successful partnerships with others in your industry. Be open to communication with readers; encourage them to submit their comments and queries, or even their own quality guest blogs.

5. Sales

It’s totally acceptable to use your business blog as a tool to attract sales, but it can be tricky; consumers don’t want to feel like you’re bombarding them with sales pitches, or trying to sneak in a marketing ploy under the radar. Be honest with your readers and be sure that your information is relevant to their needs. If they’re already reading your blog, chances are they will have an interest in your products or services, and will want to learn more.

6. Regular Updates

Establish a realistic blogging schedule and stick to it; your readers will appreciate regular new posts and are more likely to keep visiting your business blog.

Following the above guidelines will help you produce a relevant and insightful blog that readers will be eager to share. If you have some blogging advice of your own to share with us, don’t hesitate to leave a comment!

Successfully getting traffic and conversions from email marketing can be a headache if you don’t know what you’re doing. However, the biggest obstacle to email marketing is actually the spam element that automatically goes with it. With anti-spam software getting better and better, the possibility of your carefully crafted newsletter or promotional offer getting stuck in the spam folder is extremely high.

Even Less Delicious in your Inbox

Moreover, with people rarely checking their spam folder, it becomes essential to ensure that your email marketing strategy does not merely result in a bunch of spam nobody will ever read. The following techniques will ensure that the probability of your emails being treated as spam is significantly lowered.

The unsubscribe link

Move your unsubscribe link to the top of your email. Many email marketers simply loathe the idea of actually moving the link at the top as they fear that it will lead to more people unsubscribing from their mailing lists. However, this is one of the biggest myths in email marketing. If an individual actually wants to unsubscribe from a mailing list, it won’t matter where the link is placed. Additionally, you should refrain from disguising the link by putting it behind an image or any other shady tactic.

Stick to a schedule

Sticking to the same schedule when sending out your emails is also a great tactic to ensure that your emails are treated as trustworthy. Pick a day and a time when you will launch your email marketing campaign and try to stick to it as much as possible. The consistency in your emails often plays a positive role in increasing the likelihood that your emails will go through.

Don’t underestimate the subject line

The subject of the email is one of the most important factors in an email marketing campaign’s success rate. It plays a huge role in whether the email will trigger the spam switch and is also the first thing your potential readers will see. Consequently, you should be extremely careful when thinking of a subject line. You should in general avoid spam-friendly keywords which are likely to instantly send your email. Most importantly, check your subject line multiple times as even a single spelling mistake can have disastrous effects. Don’t hesitate to have someone else proofread your subject line as well as your email content.

Do your homework

Different ISPs have different rules when it comes to email marketing. Obviously, you want to be on your ISP’s good side as much as possible. As such, always take the time to find out what are the best practices according to the ISP you are dealing with. This research will also make your familiar with the mailing policy of that ISP and thus help you identify the best way of designing your email.

You call it "Stalking", I call it "Analytics".

I’ll even know if you come back in the future (and you better!!!!). Have I got your attention? Awesome. If you’re working at home, odds on you have some form of online presence. The best thing about this online presence is that everything is measurable and, with the growth of tools like Google Analytics, it’s free!

If you haven’t got any form of analytics then shame on you, take a moment to reflect on your mistake, then scroll down for 3 simple analytics tips that can be the start of something beautiful. If you’ve already got it installed then hats off to you and if you’ve not tried them yet, run this analysis now!

NB: The following points are all directed in Google Analytics. They are still easily found in other Analytic Packages.

#1 The Devices and Browsers your Customers are using

Found in: Visitors -> Technology

What if I told you 50% of your visitors still used Internet Explorer 6? Oh and by the way the other 50% are on their iPhone. I hope your website is compatible with older browsers and has a mobile-friendly version!

This report is as easy as they come yet gives such a fascinating overview of your websites visitors.

Highlighting usability problems, for an example, a 100% bounce rate in Google Chrome, can really save time in finding website performance issues.

This can also extend to marketing issues, wonder why that last email under-performed? Filter by device and maybe you’ll find that iPhones couldn’t load it, but that’s what all your customers are using!

#2 Referral Tracking

Found in: Traffic Sources -> Incoming Sources -> Referrals

In simple terms, this report shows you the websites that your traffic comes from, and is particularly handy if you are part of affiliate schemes.

Enabling you to see variables like who sends the most referrals, drives the most revenue or the highest percentage of new visitors is a fantastic way to gain an understanding of your customer base and where your website is popular.

This information will in turn help target your energy and budget into where to build more of an online presence.

Even more interestingly, each referral your company gets is a website linking to you. And why do people most commonly link? To Praise or to Complain!

You have first-hand access to brand management, all thanks to analytics. Deal with any unhappy customers before their complaint goes viral, or draw attention to people giving a thumbs up to your company and use them as online testimonials.

#3 Track your Sites Search

Found in: Content -> Site Search -> Overview

Websites will commonly have a search bar, and Analytics tracks this beautifully for you!

Search terms really are beautiful. Enabling you to see all of the keywords your customers search for, you can see what they’re looking for and even drill down to searches that return no results.

Highlighting gaps on your website, the pages of particular interest or even a page customers are struggling to find through standard navigation provides a perfect overview of your site.

The knock on effects for keeping your product/service up to date is and keeping navigation simple and user-friendly are invaluable, and worth the signing on effort in itself!

I hope these tips have perked your interest into the fascinating world of data analysis for your website. Had any success stories or want to add your own points? Comment below.

Window decals are a fantastic way to brighten up any window display, whether it is for your home, business or vehicle. They are very easy to apply, extremely simple to design and order, and most of all, they are not permanent so you can remove them whenever you don’t need them any longer. On the other hand, they are durable so they can stay affixed to your windows for years if you want them to.

On second thought, I'll go shop somewhere else.

Window decals can come with a sticky adhesive which will strongly glue the decal to the window. These window decals are suitable if you are fixing them to the external side of a window. Wind and water will affect the window decal, so you have to be sure that it can stand up to the punishment meted out by the elements. You need to pay particular attention to the materials which are used to make the decal, and not simply whether the adhesive is good enough. Over time, the colors and material will be affected by the outdoors environment, so make sure you check on the suitability and quality of the materials and manufacturing methods being employed.

By far, the most popular kind of window decal is the type which relies on static or air pressure to hold the decal in place on the window. These kinds of decal are ideal for indoor use or for external use if it is only for a short period of time and there are no security issues (such as providing a health & safety warning).

The static decals come with an easy-peel backing which is removed as you affix the decal to the glass. The static feature of the decal material ensures it will automatically cling to the glass to which it is being affixed. Air pressure also ensures that the decal will continue to remain in position until you physically remove the decal; this is done by simply peeling the decal off the window.

Personal uses of window decals are primarily focused upon vehicles and cars. Window stickers for football teams, schools, club associations or military connections are frequently found on car and truck windshields and windows. While the primary purpose is decorative, window decals are very useful as aid memoirs for important information on the vehicle itself, such as service and oil change stickers for dates (though the garage will frequently place these window decals in place). Certainly, having a window decal showing your membership of an auto club, such as AAA, is a very good idea.

Business uses of window decals varies extremely widely; advertising is obviously one reason for many business window decals irrespective of whether they are used on their own premises and vehicles, or even on a customer’s. Window decals are also very useful for providing contractors and employees with a visual display of access and parking information on work and business sites and parking lots. They are also extremely useful as an alternative to permanent window painting both inside the building and as a display for the premises. In fact, the usefulness of window decals for businesses is only restricted by the imagination of managers and staff.

If you’re serious about running your own business website and actually making money from it by selling goods, running an affiliate program or making money from display advertising; then it’s time to start taking the issue of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) seriously. By implementing some very basic SEO tactics on your site, you can start experiencing greater volumes of traffic in a very short space of time, and thereby increase the revenue that your website generates. This article takes a look at a few ways in which you can improve your overall knowledge of SEO and get started with optimizing your website today. Check it out…

1. Read everything you can get your fingertips on

There are a few basic SEO starter books that one can read to get a basic understanding of how SEO works. Remember that SEO is not an exact science and therefore many different people have different theories on how it all works. My recommendation to learn the basics of SEO would be to check out SEO Book by Aaron Wall for a starter guide to SEO (I am in no way affiliated with this book).

SEO Really Isn't THAT Complicated...

2. Follow industry experts on Twitter

There are a few key industry veterans who are constantly sharing and discussing the latest happenings in SEO. In order to stay on top of latest developments in the industry, it is essential that you follow the following people on Twitter; it will help you more than you could imagine:

- @Searchcowboys

- @JonDMyers

- @theGypsy

- @DaveNaylor

- @avinash

- @mattcutts

3. Get a hang of the available SEO tools

Bing is an up and coming search engine and is slowly gaining market share in the search industry, but let’s be honest, currently Google has a market share of over 80%. So therefore, it is essential that your blog or website is appropriately optimized according to Google’s standards. And in order to do this, you need to use their data in order to implement and measure the success of your strategies. There are three key tools that you need to master in order to effectively implement SEO strategies on your own website:

3.1 Google AdWords external keyword tool:

This tool will give you a great idea of what phrases people are searching for in relation to your blog or website. Simply by inputting one keyword, this tool will generate a whole range of variations to that keyword and give you an idea of what keywords you need to be targeting in order to receive maximum traffic levels.

3.2 Google Analytics:

Once installed on your website, Google analytics enables you to accurately measure exactly how much traffic you are receiving to the different parts of your website. You can see which keywords are attracting the most traffic, which pages of your site are performing best and how long people are spending on your site. Probably the most important SEO tool available to website owners!

3.3 Webmaster Tools:

Webmaster tools basically provides you with all the information and tools you need to ensure that your site is indexed by Google in the way that you want it to be indexed. As the name suggests, it’s an essential tool for any webmaster.

4. Practice, Practice and more Practice

Once you have read about the basics of SEO and got the hang of the tools required to make informed SEO decisions and measure the success of these decisions, you’re well on your way of becoming an SEO “Expert”. Remember that SEO is an evolving science and therefore it is essential that you continue evolving your skills with the changes in the industry. Practice SEO on your own site, offer to help friends out on their sites and don’t be afraid to experiment with some unique strategies of your own. What works for other people won’t necessarily work for you.

What are you waiting for?

Learn the basics of SEO today and you will soon realize how simple it is to start gaining more and more traffic volumes to your website. The more traffic you get, the more money you make!

—

Hi, I’m Dave Tucker! I write for numerous property and business blogs and have a couple smaller blogs of my own. I have recently been able to research and learn a lot about SEO and the value of SEO to all websites. Apart from my keen enthusiasm for finances and the property market, I feel that sharing my basic knowledge of SEO is where I can make the best contribution to other website owners out there.

At one time, the success of a business mainly relied upon word-of-mouth advertising or different types of print advertisements; however, there is no denying that commerce has changed tremendously over the past 11 years. Nowadays, with everyone being somewhat computer and technologically savvy, internet marketing is a must when it comes to keeping a business alive and flourishing.

With so many reasons to use the internet, an online presence is really all it takes anymore to reach targeted customers. While it is still wise to use other forms of direct marketing, internet marketing is one of the most effective strategies to implement. Not only is it effective, but it is also cost efficient when compared to postal mail and print advertisement marketing. It is extremely cost efficient when compared to broadcast marketing.

All businesses should come to the realization that their audience is online, searching or surfing for one thing or another, and that the only thing that has to be done to market to them is to create an online business presence, even if it means only utilizing pay-per-click (PPC) marketing strategies. In fact, PPC have grown 37% in the past year because they are such an effective Internet marketing strategy to implement (searching solutions, n.d.)

One of the best ways to effectively market and create an online presence is to partner with professionals who are experts in these areas. They can help businesses understand the complexions of the online world, while at the same time working through any type of online barriers to make sure a positive online presence and reputation is maintained. By developing a message, developing a plan, and then finally implementing the plan, a business is sure to see an increase in revenue sales within a short period of time. Many small businesses have seen tremendous growth from simply implementing online marketing strategies.

The best way to find professionals who can help with internet marketing is to obtain references from other businesses that have used them. This will help in finding reliable, trustworthy and affordable professionals that provide a wide range of internet marketing services. Many times, businesses will find it most advantageous to partner with a professional that has in-depth knowledge about the industry the business operates within.

With so many legalities related to Internet marketing, it is also wise to partner with a professional that fully understand them, so that compliance with laws and regulations can be maintained. This also helps in avoiding penalties for noncompliance issues.

Even when a business partners with a professional to implement Internet marketing strategies, the business owner itself should stay very involved. No one knows a business better than its owner, which is why it is so imperative take on the Internet marketing adventures as a team, not to just throw it all upon a professional.

The words “too busy” shouldn’t apply to waitresses and Internet Marketers. But, that’s exactly what I’ve been… Sometimes we have so many different things going at once, we don’t know where to start, and that can make getting going just that much harder. Or, as some like to call it, analysis paralysis.

Other times, things literally fall out of the sky and make your world a slightly more interesting place. For instance, I just happened to be walking past my fireplace the other day when all of a sudden I hear some strange chirping. Every year robins nest in the chimney, but this chirping was different, so I go to check it out.

Inside, I found a little hatchling who had apparently either fallen or been left by his family. I left him for a few hours to see if he’d get picked up. After that, I knew I had to do something about it… So I scooped him up, did some quick research on the net about what to feed him, and pretty soon had this little maniac on my hands.

Hi. I'm crazy!

He is like a cross between an alien and a muppet. He likes to eat about once every 30 minutes to an hour, though thankfully he sleeps through the night.

I’m really not knowledgeable on raising birds, though, so if anyone happens to know of a bird rescue in the Oklahoma area, I’d like to put the guy in the hands of some professionals.

The only reason I bring this up in this article is because Dennis Becker just came out with a new copy of his original “5 Bucks a Day” book (called eloquently enough “5 Bucks a Day Revisited) and one of the major themes is not being “too busy”. If your business can only afford 30 minutes of your time a day, make it 30 minutes well used, and well planned. The idea is to get started doing something.

The premise behind the book is you set yourself a daily income goal that you’ll see every day and through projects that you feel will earn you a minimum of $5 a day, you work closer to that goal. Some of the projects you may do once and they pay you 5 bucks a day every day from here on out.

Once you finish one, you move on to the next one. You have enough of these projects taken care of, and you can move into the realm of people who hang post-it notes with 4 figure daily goals.

Overall, I really enjoyed the book. It’s right around 100 pages and has a lot of actionable advice. It also goes into the mindset you need to do it, ideas on things you can do for $5 a day, some time management techniques, and above all, a lot of motivation to give you that push to get you started. So, even though I’ve been on bird-watch duty lately, I’ve been able to implement a couple of $5 a day projects.

The instructions are clear, concise, and above all, can be put into immediate use. If you don’t have a copy, you can pick one up here:

http://www.homerunprofits.com/5badr.html

The cost is… $5! And when it comes to spending money on your business education, $5 is truly a bargain.

Back to the birds!

Did you know YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine? It’s scary the amount of traffic this video sharing website receives, yet very few internet marketers take full advantage of it. Some will create slide show videos for backlinks, but those are Pyrrhic victories; instead of seeing video, backlinks, blogs, and social media as separate here is a blueprint approach to marrying these beasts into one contiguous flow.

Not all blog posts need to follow this guideline but for new bloggers it’s even more difficult to break through the noise, so these added advantages will certainly help.

Not a Useful Checklist

100% Unique, well-written, error free article of at least 500 words. The added benefit of content is the ability for search engines to pick up ancillary phrases that would otherwise go unnoticed in smaller amounts of on-page text.

Create a Video specifically for your topic of the blog post. It can reiterate the blog post, but try to offer something different in case they read the post and watch the video.

Add a relevant/thought-provoking/funny/eye-catching image in the beginning of your article. People love images; they more readily syndicate information if it comes paired with some imagery.

What you need to accomplish this:

A blog, or guest blog for an industry leader. This is very easy because you can use free hosting blog providers such as blogger, WordPress, Squidoo, HubPages, etc.

A YouTube account with your brand name. If you have time be sure to also register to the other video sharing websites. While not as popular as YouTube they all receive traffic.

A Facebook fan page and twitter account. You can synch your YouTube with Facebook.

If you go to your profile page and click on Settings, a section called Imported Stories will pop down, with Last.fm and YouTube (among others) which will synchronize your activity on these sites and import them into your activity on Facebook – from metafilter.com

Ping.fm offers a great solution to syndicate your content to multiple distribution channels with one click.

Bringing it All Together:

We know there are people making a living blogging. There are also people making a living with video marketing and social media. The natural synergy associated with text, imagery, and video will make your online marketing campaigns a true success. Even the supposed gurus that stick to only one medium will eventually lose out to others incorporating every technique.

Ironically this post would get more traction if a video was made for it. Slide show videos for backlinks isn’t marketing effectively, and using social media to promote a wall of text is pointless. Images, content, and video will make you an authority in your niche in no time.
