Sony Releases Two Entry-Level Home Theater Receivers for 2013

Sony.has announced its first two entries in its 2013 Home Theater Receiver line-up, STR-DH540 and STR-DH740.
The STR-DH540 features a 5.2 channel speaker configuration, while the DTR-DH740 provides 7.2 channels that can be configured with either surround back, front height, or bi-amp speaker configuration. The stated power output ratings for both receivers are 90 wpc RMS (measured from 20Hz - 20kHz with 2-channels driven at 6 ohms with .09 THD). On-board decoding is included for most Dolby and DTS audio formats, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, while the STR-DH740 adds Dolby Prologic IIz audio processing.Both receivers also feature four HDMI 1.4a-enabled connections that provide 3D and up to 4K pass-through, and Audio Return Channel. A front mounted USB port for accessing content on flash drives or iPhone, iPod, iPad is also included. PSB Imagine T2 Speaker System

the standard-issue, black-grilled, plain-Jane, rectangular coffins for which significant others might grudgingly give up floor space in return for other concessions. After all, pocket-protector-wearing, slide-rule-swinging, techno-geek research types aren’t known for their sense of fashion.The Imagine series speakers’ looks are far from that, however, because PSB turned to David Farrage and his New York design firm, DF-ID, to provide the industrial design.

I’ve never met Farrage, but based on the Imagine series speakers and the work he’s done for other clients (including Sony, Samsonite, NAD, Lamborghini, and Movado), I’m quite certain a pocket protector is not part of his wardrobe. Farrage deserves many kudos for the organic beauty of the gentle curves and the finely executed details of the Imagine speakers. The Imagine T2 tower speakers, for example, don’t unabashedly draw attention to themselves as do, for example, some Sonus faber or Focal speakers. Nor are they a more subtle statement, such as the look of the narrow aluminum cabinets of Definitive Technology’s Mythos speakers. Instead, the visuals of PSB’s Imagine speakers fall somewhere in between—for the most part disappearing into the room but, upon closer inspection, revealing an understated beauty and elegance.

The Imagine T2 ($3,500 per pair) is the latest addition to—and the new flagship speaker of—PSB’s small group of Imagine speakers, which includes the smaller Imagine T tower, two pair of monitor speakers, two center channels, and a unique tri-mode surround speaker. For this review, PSB included the larger Imagine C center ($850) and a pair of the tri-mode Imagine S surround speakers ($1,300 per pair). All the speakers share the inspired design elements, as well as the same family of drivers.
The Imagine T2 is tall (a little more than 40 inches) and slender (a bit more than 8 inches at its widest point) with the sides sloping from the curved, 2-inch-thick, MDF front baffle toward a narrow, rounded back. As far as I could tell, the only flat surface is found on the bottom of the cabinet. Greg Stidsen, PSB’s director of technology and product planning, explained that the cabinets start out as seven layers of thin MDF that are form-fit and pressed into shape. The cabinets are then placed inside the industrial equivalent of the microwave oven on your kitchen counter to cure the glue between each layer. Then a CNC machine drills the holes for the drivers, and the cabinet’s wood veneers are individually hand-sanded and finished. The result is an elegant, well-proportioned tower that, even when toed in, shows a thin outline of wood on either side of the black grille when viewed from the main seating position. The tower rests on four round feet located at the bottom corners of the cabinet with a tap in each that accepts either the included spikes or rubber pads.

baffle, sloping sides, and the same 1-inch titanium-dome tweeter. In this case, though, the tweeter is centered between two 5.25-inch drivers. The Imagine C comes with a port plug, although there’s only one port to potentially seal. Since the cabinet is curved on every side, PSB includes a short, black rubber bar that you can place under the Imagine C to position it at the correct angle. The dense rubber material holds the heavy (26.8-pound) speaker securely in place and helps to reduce vibrations that might transfer to whatever the speaker is sitting on top of.

The Imagine S surround speakers were smaller than I expected based on the dimensions of other high-performance bipole/dipole surround speakers I’ve encountered in the past. The surface-mounted Imagine S speakers take up less than 11 x 13 inches of wall space and extend only a tad more than 7 inches into the room. They’re not quite as elegant as the Imagine T2 and Imagine C, but their curved front and prominent center strip of wood definitely identify them as part of the Imagine family while still allowing them to remain unobtrusive in most rooms. The Imagine S speakers aren’t ported, and they include 1-inch tweeters and 5.25-inch woofers. In this case, one tweeter/woofer combo fires forward, and the other fires rearward—but the Imagine S isn’t your standard bipole or dipole surround speaker.

Even without the aid of the SubSeries 300, the Imagine T2s’ two-channel musical performance was absolutely stellar. They had that wonderful character of having almost no character—sonically, there’s nothing that draws specific attention to the speaker. The placement of the tweeter below the midrange puts it at seated ear level, which is generally the goal. In this case, I found the soundstage’s plane to be lower than is typical. In other words, I find that other speakers tend to place vocals slightly above the level of my ears. With the T2s, Bonnie Raitt’s voice on “Take My Love With You” from the new Slipstream CD seemed to come from a position directly even with, or perhaps just below, my ears in front of me. Especially impressive was the smooth transition from driver to driver, as well as the extremely wide soundstage the T2s produced. On “Until You Remember” from the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Revelator disc, the horns’ plaintive notes at the beginning of the song were so smooth, it felt like the T2s were slowly pouring pure New Orleanian sadness into the room. That was followed by the tight plucking of guitar strings to the left of center, and, once Tedeschi’s dead-centered voice was joined by the remainder of the band, each instrument was clearly defined and placed across a wide soundstage.

The Imagine T2 system is splendidly seductive. The graceful curves coyly play with your eyes without demanding constant attention. In the same way, the Imagine T2’s sound is beguilingly smooth and natural; and those alluring sonic qualities extend to the Imagine C center and Imagine S surrounds—and the SubSeries 300—when they’re brought together in one room. Even though it’s composed of six individual boxes, the system is absolutely superb at working together as seamlessly as if it were one big speaker—or, perhaps, no speaker at all. Even if the Imagine T2 system were pink and yellow with a purple-fringed grille cloth, I’d still have to recommend it because it sounds so damn good. Fortunately, it’s a beautiful and elegantly designed piece of work. If this is what comes from living in an anechoic chamber for a good part of your life, then so be it.by darryl wilkinson

But the enclosure's most important job is to be totally inert and resonance free so as not to color the sound. And that's just we did in engineering the BP enclosures. Wherever a driver is attached to the cabinet we placed a second layer of heavy MDF (a low resonance wood composite material) to prevent the drivers from imparting vibration to the rest of the enclosure. The sealed midrange enclosures also serve to provide bracing for the side walls while MDF cross braces near the woofer further stiffen the system. Tap on the side panels of a BP enclosure to hear the solid "thud" of a solid, well-damped cabinet instead of the hollow ring of a poorly constructed speaker. NOTE: the high gloss polymer composite end-cap is a decorative element; it is not part of the acoustical system.

technology companies are already preparing for the next stage, with televisions, players and discs that will offer 'Ultra HD' resolutions.
Sony and LG are gearing up for new Blu-Ray discs that offer 'Ultra HD' definitions far higher than normal Full HD, such as 4K - four times higher than normal HD, and near the resolutions offered in Imax theatres.
'We're expecting the arrival of 4K Blu-rays in 2013,' said John Taylor, LG's Vice President of Communications told website Pocket-Lint.

Sony's new S790 player, due out this year, will 'upscale' Blu-Rays to 4K resolution. Sony is also rumoured to be in talks with film studios about a new specification of Blu-Ray discs capable of storing and showing films in the new 'Ultra HD' format

The discs could be on the market as early as 2013. LG, Toshiba and others have televisions capable of Ultra HD.

Panasonic DMP-BDT500 Review

The Panasonic DMP-BDT500 does everything the Panasonic DMP-BDT220 and DMP-BDT320 do – and does it better.
For starters, the flagship model is better built than its siblings, the casework feeling sturdier and more substantial. The touch-sensitive controls on top of the player are not just fun to use, they're also slick and quick to respond.
As for the technical spec, it's fully kitted out, with Panasonic's new touchpad remote control, smart home networking, wi-fi, adaptive chroma picture processing, 3D playback and DLNA.
And yes it does have twin HDMI and multichannel analogue outputs (5.1 or 7.1) for connecting to older home cinema amps and receivers that don't handle 3D passthrough or HD audio over HDMI.
It even has what Panasonic calls 'Digital Tube Sound', designed to recreate the "warm, comforting sound of tube amps". There are six different sound options available with this feature, each with its own characteristics.

Panasonic DMP-BDT500: Picture qualityBut let's start with picture quality: we’ve been using The Adventures of Tintin as a test movie for a while now, and the Panasonic DMP-BDT500 injects fresh new life into the film.
It’s remarkably crisp and detailed, with textures in particular rendered brilliantly: you can see the creases and wrinkles on clothes, and even the smallest scratches on wood grain and glass.
The Panasonic DMP-BDT500’s colour palette is expertly balanced, too, with lots of depth and vivacity without being overblown, and a nice, natural quality to skin-tones.
The DMP-BDT500’s biggest improvement lies in motion handling. It’s wonderfully fluid, with no discernible judder or blurring. And you’ll appreciate it even more with a Lord of the Rings DVD. The player’s impressive upscaling makes Middle Earth look beautifully detailed.
Just make sure you've set the frame rate and upscaling to the correct values in the setting's menu to get the best results. Ideally, the frame rate should be set to 24 fps, and upscaling set to 1080p
3D viewing benefits from the improved motion as well: the documentary film TT3D: Closer to the Edge looks smooth and steady, with great depth and detail.

Panasonic DMP-BDT500: Picture adjustments
The Panasonic comes with a whole host of settings to adjust the picture: for example, you have the option to fine tune the picture quality in the User Mode – where you can adjust brightness, contrast and sharpness, among others.
Panasonic’s Adaptive Chroma Process aims to produce a high resolution of rich images, and it does exactly that – the colours are vibrant and rich, although they tend towards looking quite overblown and take away the naturalness of certain textures like skin tones.
Detail Clarity and Super Resolution emphasise the leading edges of the image – which are welcome adjustments if your current screen isn’t quite up to standard.

Panasonic DMP-BDT500: Sound quality
Panasonic Blu-ray players have always sounded good, and the BDT500 adds to that by being even more muscular.
The dialogue is clear and distinct, but it’s with explosions and gunshots that you can really hear the power in the DMP-BDT500: it’s gutsy and exciting, with plenty of attack that’ll get you fully immersed in the film.
That’s also evident when playing music over a network. Stream a FLAC file of Adele’s Rolling in the Deep and the BDT500 delivers a solid, engaging and lively performance.

Panasonic DMP-BDT500: Sound tuning
When it comes to sound, you have plenty of options: Night Surround compresses dynamics and pushes midrange to the forefront so you can hear the dialogue even with a low volume; while Dialogue Enhancer quite predictable increases the volume of the centre channel.
There are three re-mastered sound options – Pop and Rock, Jazz, and Classical – which alter the tonality of the sound by putting emphasis on the higher frequencies.
Conversely, there are six ‘Digital Tube Sound’ effects, which are inspired by the characteristically warm and fuller sound of valve amplifiers. Panasonic says its engineers have been studying the sonic charasctristics of valve (or tube) amplifiers, and the six settings here aim to reproduce those.
Each option offers varying degrees of smoothing of the sound, but at the expense of making it also rather thick and dull. Switching all options off (or back to normal) makes you immediately aware of all the spacious soundstage that gets cut off when you put the effects on.
All these adjustments are helpful if your existing system has a particular tonal characteristic; for example you might want to play around with the Digital Tube Sound options if your partnering kit has a harsh or hard sound.
But on the whole, Panasonic Blu-ray players tend to have a great standard when it comes to both picture and sound quality, and you’ll find that leaving them to the default settings leaves the original soundtrack intact.

Panasonic DMP-BDT500: Networking You also have access to a host of online network features via integrated wi-fi or ethernet, such as BBCiPlayer, Netflix, Skype, Facebook, and Twitter, and the stream is fast and uninterrupted.
It's all part of Panasonic's Viera Connect portal, which is an improvement on last year's fare, although the interface is a little clunky compared to the slicker offerings from the likes of Samsung.
You can also stream video from local storage – a computer or NAS drive, for example: any stored photos, music and videos can be pulled up with just a few clicks on the button (or taps on the touchpad), and then you’ll be enjoying your stored media seamlessly

Still, Panasonic isn't afraid to try new things on the design front and this year it's chosen to take a scalpel to the player's remote, merging buttons with a touchpad.
It's a nice idea in theory but this new-fangled approach does take quite a while to get used to, and it might mean spending a couple of seconds flicking over the manual!
Having shortcut keys to Skype, Netflix and internet (aka Viera Connect) is great. When it comes to navigating settings and disc menus, you have to employ a combination of button presses together with various swishes and taps on the touchpad.
A couple of times our fingers were tied up in knots, but given time, operating it does become easier.
Verdict
Overall, is the Panasonic DMP-BDT500 worth the extra cash over the cheaper models in the range?
Definitely. Improving on an already brilliant line-up, it’s a captivating player that will make you dig out all your discs and watch them anew.by what hifi.com

For example, in a 9.2-channel system, when Zone 2 is off, all 7.1 channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two Surround Back channels will be directed to the two speakers and sub in Zone 2, and the Main Zone will receive 5.1 channels of power. Similarly, when CINEMA DSP 3D is on, the two Front Presence speakers will be powered and not the two Surround Back speakers. When CINEMA DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Amazing 3D Blu-Rays Movies For Your Home Theatre

discrepancy between what constitutes a good film and a good 3D film -- eye-popping 3D visuals will often make up for the lack of a good plot when it comes to 3D Blu-rays. Conversely, while there are plenty of fantastic movies that have been released on 3D Blu-ray, most of the time 3D just doesn’t add much to the overall film experience, and you’d probably be better off just getting the 2D Blu-ray

With that in mind, here’s a list of some of AVS’ favorite 3D Blu-rays: these discs all boast breathtaking 3D effects that truly enhance the cinematic experience without feeling like an added, unneeded distraction to the story - the visuals serve and enhance the story properly, which is what 3D should do (though it fails in this much of the time). For succeeding in that goal, these films should all be worthy of a permanent place in your Blu-ray collection.

A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventure

This fun animated Belgium film is a 50 year story of a sea turtle, following the effects that global warming have on his life. Though it isn’t even currently available in the U.S., this film’s seriously popping 3D effects have garnered it enough attention on AVS Forum to make it the current reigning champion of 3D Blu-rays. Though the movie’s somewhat cheesy plot is aimed at kids, this its incredible depth and pop-out factor is arguably the most extreme of any 3D Blu-ray on the market, and certainly more extreme than any 3D film Hollywood has produced.

As AVS member buonforte says, “the movie takes place out of the screen and in your living room. Whatever method they used to achieve this doesn't matter to me, the results are stellar. A truly outstanding reference quality that has (at this point in time) no equal.” g_bartman added that “It did not cause any extreme eye fatigue; you could literally reach out and touch objects in some scenes.” If you’re looking for a definitive demo disc for your 3D system, Sammy’s Adventure is well worth the effort in tracking down an overseas copy -- its extreme effects are really that good.

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

At times, this admittedly silly, non-stop visual spectacle of a film feels more like a Disneyland ride than a movie, but that’s the whole point. Journey 2 was made to showcase the 3D format, and it unabashedly succeeds in this better than any film thus far. It’s true -- it would be utterly pointless to see this film in 2D, but in 3D, it shines like none other. Member TonyDP has no problem in getting behind some good, gimmicky entertainment every now and then: “Yes, the movie is dumb, goofy, improbable and often preposterous...But in terms of 3D it really doesn't get much better than this release. Depth into the screen is constant and always very strong...The movie peppers you with scene after scene of stuff popping out at you: berries bouncing off The Rock's pecs, giant bees, giant centipedes, electric eels, and an electrified spear that goes right thru your eye...

“The movie's cinematography also smartly manages extreme contrast ranges so you get a picture that is pretty much free of ghosting on any type of 3D display, no matter how old it is. The digital image is razor sharp, ultra colorful and perfectly clear...While ‘serious’ 3D movies like Avatar and Hugo are fine, every now and then you want to check your brain at the door and just spend 90 minutes ducking and weaving as stuff is virtually hurled at you. Journey 2 has that need covered, and for that reason alone should probably be checked out at least once by every 3D fan.” ‘Nuff said!

Avatar

What can be said at this point about Avatar that hasn’t been said yet? This one’s clearly a no-brainer -- the film practically ushered in the new era of 3D cinema when it was released, and now that it is finally seeing a widespread 3D Blu-ray release on 10/16, anyone can experience James Cameron’s painstakingly rendered, immaculately gorgeous world of the Na’vi. Though the breathtaking 3D moments are too numerous to mention, my favorites have to be any scene with the dragon-like Toruks, and the glow-in-the-dark nighttime forest scenes. The detail and depth in every frame are a wonder to behold.

Hugo

Though its 3D effects aren’t as in-your-face as other films, Hugo features maybe the best use of stunning 3D visuals to compliment its excellent story. 3D more often than not is used as an entertaining gimmick that’s inessential to the actual story, but Martin Scorsese’s tasteful use of 3D in Hugo brings it to life, driving the plot forward with its natural use of depth and movement. As the camera pans, swoops and glides around the turn-of-the-century train station, diving into the gears and sprockets of the station’s elaborate clock tower, it’s hard not to get lost in Scorsese’s beautiful mechanized world. alexuts2oo4 agrees: “I was really impressed...The 3D is very well used, the picture is very crisp, detail is amazing, colors are vibrant and the picture is bright. And there is little to no crosstalk...I'm very glad I purchased it, because now it's my favorite 3D live-action film, and the new demo for overall 3D quality.” Though this is a great film even in 2D, Hugo truly has to be seen in 3D to experience the full, deeply immersive effect that Scorsese has achieved.

Tangled

Tangled is another film that succeeds on its own as a great 2D movie, but watch it in 3D, and you’ll be amazed at how much the story is enhanced by the added depth. Tangled is Disney’s first non-Pixar CGI film, and they definitely nailed it -- the film seamlessly combines the smoothness of traditional Disney animation with the immaculate detail of modern CGI. The animation is lush and fluid, and the 3D adds just enough realism to the story, keeping you mesmerised without being distracted. One notable 3D scene of remarkable beauty occurs when the characters are in a canoe on a lake, and glowing lanterns float into the night sky -- it’s gorgeous scenes like these that make a home 3D setup all worth it. nickels55 concurs: “Just watched Tangled 3D with the kids. WOW! That is some of the best use of 3D that I've seen on my set to date. The lantern scene towards the end should be the go-to scene in stores selling 3D equipment. Unreal depth and lots of pop-out.” This is one 3D Blu-ray kids and adults alike can get behind.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas

When it comes to 3D Blu-rays, Harold & Kumar is a definite sleeper. This raunchy comedy pulls no punches in using the 3D format to mess with the audience -- there are surprising, well-executed pop-outs at every turn, and though they are mostly gimmicks, the film is very entertaining as a result. Just listen to wnielsenbb: “I've found the ultimate live action 3D effect movie...Wow, that movie goes out of its way to throw stuff in your face. Well, and to offend everyone. If you aren't easily offended, it is a great demo. Actually, you don't have to be too easy to offend...H&K 3D is clearly the king of pop-out.”

This film’s off-the-wall antics combined with its blatant, unapologetic use of 3D put it near the top of its class when it comes to live-action 3D Blu-rays. But as bnr32jason mentions, it hasn’t really gotten much recognition: “Wow, I'm really surprised that more people aren’t raving about Harold & Kumar 3D. I've watched 30 or 40 3D Blu-ray movies now and this one is by far the best. Of course it's all subjective opinion, but I don't understand why more people aren't talking about this movie yet.” This may be because it’s a Christmas film -- perhaps it will get more traction this holiday season.

IMAX: Under The Sea

This underwater documentary boasts incredible 3D footage of sea creatures, and is narrated by Jim Carrey. What more could you want? There are many amazing IMAX documentaries that look incredible on 3D Blu-ray, but the consensus seems to be that Under the Sea is the best of them all. tonyjd40 backs this up: “The best 3D Blu-ray ever, and I have watched tons...When the eel is swimming slowly towards you, it really looks as if it is hovering right in front of you. I couldn’t believe how awesome that was...my daughter loved it. best 3D effect ever, no doubt!”

But the real reason for Under the Sea’s popularity has to be because of the most famous potato cod in history -- this big guy has been blowing everyone away with his show-stealing, extreme pop-out scene. avswilier describes it: “The single most incredible 3D effect has to be from Under the Sea, 21 minutes in...Heard a lot of talk about the potato cod...When you see it for yourself it's breathtaking...Absolutely convincing...I could not resist trying to touch it, it was sooooooo far out of the screen! Amazing!!!” Av8tr agrees: “Just another vote for IMAX Under the Sea and the potato cod. Dolby 3D Deliver on the Promise of Glasses-Free 3D?

A number of manufacturers are working on glasses-free 3DTV at CES 2012, I saw glasses-free demos from Toshiba, Sony, and Stream TV (Toshiba has said that it will introduce its glasses-free TV to the U.S. market this year), none of these demos was especially impressive. In its current form, glasses-free 3DTV produces an image that lacks depth and detail and has a limited number of viewing positions. The latest company to tackle the glasses-free 3D challenge is Dolby, which has worked on the cinema side of 3D technology for years. Back at NAB in April, the company unveiled Dolby 3D, a suite of technologies (developed in partnership with Royal Philips Electronics) designed to offer full HD 3D content to all 3D-capable devices, including glasses-free 3D displays.

According to the original press release, the goal of Dolby 3D is to "improve the 3D viewing experience on displays of all sizes, including smartphones, tablets, PCs, and televisions. Dolby 3D is a complete system designed to work throughout the chain to deliver clear glasses-free 3D content that operates over existing distribution systems." Dolby 3D will provide tools to content creators, content distributors and display manufacturers to improve the 3D viewing experience at home and on mobile devices. On the display end, Philips provides the glasses-free 3D panel. The most common method for delivering autostereoscopic 3D is by using a lenticular filter with many small lenses that direct the appropriate image to each eye to create the 3D effect. As with the current crop of passive 3DTVs, the lenticular approach embeds the left- and right-eye images together in the same frame, cutting the amount of resolution to each eye. To deliver a more detailed 3D image, you need to start with a more detailed (i.e., higher-resolution) display. At NAB, Dolby showed off the technology on a 56-inch 4K LCD panel, sending an approximately 2K image to each eye. From the reports I saw, attendees had a favorable response to the Dolby 3D demo, with Home Theater's Scott Wilkinson describing it as "the best autostereoscopic display I've ever seen." Toshiba's glasses-free 3DTV also uses a higher-resolution QuadHD panel. Clearly, one of the keys to bringing successful glasses-free 3DTV to market is to speed up the development and rollout of 4K displays.

The lenticular approach also requires you to view the image from a particular viewing position to get the 3D effect; this isn't a concern when viewing glasses-free 3D on a small-screen gaming console or a phone, but it's a major problem on a big-screen TV. Manufacturers are continually working to increase the number of viewing zones for larger-screen TVs and to minimize the noticeable transition from zone to zone. Dolby's NAB prototype had 28 zones (in comparison, Toshiba's glasses-free 3DTV demo at CES had nine zones).

Addition to improving the glasses-free approach, Dolby 3D is also designed to offer a better 3D experience on existing 3DTVs, particularly in 3D content delivered by cable/satellite providers. Because the broadcasters don't want to use additional bandwidth to deliver 3D content, they employ frame-packing technology to embed the left- and right-eye images in the same frame, in either a side-by-side or top-and-bottom format. This delivery method halves the image resolution. According to Thom Brekke on the Dolby Laboratories blog, "One of the many capabilities included in Dolby 3D is the ability to send a lightweight, full-resolution stream over existing networks. Think Blu-ray quality 3D from your cable or satellite provider. This aspect of the technology works with glasses-free Dolby 3D-equipped televisions, as well as existing sets that use glasses." Another stated benefit of Dolby 3D is the ability of the end user to easily tailor the 3D depth to according to preference and screen size, be it a 65-inch TV, 15-inch PC, or seven-inch tablet.

Which surround sound setup most accurately emulates the rumbling bellow of that Star Destroyer Sound Wrapping over our heads at the beginning of Star Wars: A New Hope? If money’s no object, shooting for any high-end 7.1 surround sound setup will likely net you some mindblowing audio. In the real world, though, where we have to contend with budgets and financial responsibility, it helps to know what we’re paying for.

Sound Bars and 2.1 Stereo: Can Virtual Surround Sound Cut It?

virtual surround sound, or VSS. By delaying certain sound signals or bouncing sound waves off walls, virtual surround sound can do a pretty good job of fooling our ears and making us think sound is actually coming from behind us.

Does it actually measure up to a true multi-speaker surround setup? Well, no. That’s the bitter truth: you’re not going to get the absolutely convincing, clear sound of a multi-speaker system with virtual surround sound. But they’re coming closer, and there are still reasons to look at them. In a small room, where it may be difficult to fit a 5 speaker arrangement, virtual surround can use the walls to its advantage, bounce sound to the back of the room, and fill the space. Virtual surround typically comes in two forms: one piece sound bars (sometimes accompanied with a subwoofer), and more traditional 2.1 (two speakers and a subwoofer) configurations.

Most people think that more watts means more volume. An amplifier with 100 WPC is twice as loud as 50 WPC right? DecibelsSound levels are measured in Decibels (db) In essence, our ears detect differences in volume level in a non-linear fashion. Our ears become less sensitive to sound as it increases. Decibels are a logarithmic scale of relative loudness. A difference of approximately 1 db a minimum perceptible change in volume, 3 db is a moderate change in volume, and about 10 db is an approximate perceived doubling of volume. To give you an idea of how this relates to real-world situations the following examples are listed:0 db is the threshold of hearing
Whisper: 15-25 dB
Background noise: about 35 dB
Normal home or office background: 40-60 dB
Normal speaking voice: 65-70 dB
Orchestral climax: 105 dB

In order for one amplifier to reproduce sound twice as loud as another in Decibels you need 10 times more wattage output. An amplifier rated at 100 WPC is capable of twice the volume level of a 10 WPC amp, an amplifier rated at 100 watts per channel needs to be 1,000 watts per channel to be twice as loud. In other words, the relationship between volume and wattage output is logarithmic rather than linear. DistortionIn addition, the quality of the amplifier is as (or more) important than just the wattage output. An amplifier that exhibits excessive noise or distortion at loud volume levels can be unlistenable. You are better off with an amplifier of about 50 WPC with a low distortion level that a much more powerful amplifier with high distortion levels. Always make sure that, when you check for Specifications, that the WPC output is measured in RMS terms. This means that the listed power output is sustained output at a specific volume level. How Stated Power Ratings Can Be Deceivingalso to the continuous power rating, another factor affecting real amplifier power output, especially with surround sound receivers, is whether the manufacturer is basing their wattage output specification on one or two channels driven or with all channels driven. In addition, was the measurement made using a 1KHz test tone, or with 20Hz to 20KHz test tones?In other words, when you see an amplifier wattage rating of 100 watts-per-channel at 1 KHz with one or two channels driven, the real-world wattage output when all 5 or 7 channels are operating across all frequencies will be lower, possibly as much as 30 or 40% lower. Dynamic Headroom is the ability of your receiver/amplifier to output power at a significantly higher level for short periods to accommodate musical peaks or extreme sound effects in films. This specification is very important in home theater applications, where extreme changes in volume and loudness occur during the course of a film. This specification is expressed as Dynamic Headroom. Once again, Dynamic Headroom is measured in Decibels. If a receiver/amplifier has the ability to double is power output for a brief period to accommodate the conditions described above, it would have a Dynamic Headroom of 3db. A custom-wound torroidal power transformer anchors a high current, regulated power supply that’s been newly tuned for quick response. Sharp XV-Z30000 3D DLP Video Projector

The new XV-Z30000, however, retains and even improves upon that earlier design’s strengths. It doesn’t eliminate all of its weaknesses, but it puts some of the most significant ones to rest. While it resembles its predecessor in some ways, by and large it’s a clean-sheet redesign.
Description
The XV-Z30000 is a compact, single-chip, DLP design. Its lens is mounted front and center, protected by a clear cover. The latter remains in place when the projector is in use, with the picture projected through it.
The roughly 2:1 zoom ratio can fill a 100-inch-diagonal, 16x9 screen at throw distances from 10 feet, 4 inches to 20 feet, 9 inches. (Sharp has conveniently provided formulas for this in the owner’s manual: for a 16:9 screen, minimum distance = 0.1032 x screen diagonal; maximum distance = 0.2079 x screen diagonal.) The lens’ zoom, focus, and shift (vertical and horizontal) are all motorized—a major upgrade from the manual lens in the XV-Z17000. Just as significant, the lens offset in the new model offers a much more practical range of vertical mounting positions. The older projector had to be placed either very low or very high to fill the screen without producing keystone distortion (a trapezoidal rather than a clean, rectangular image). There is a keystone control here (horizontal and vertical), but with lens shift it’s not needed. (Keystone correction reduces image resolution and is always best avoided.)
Another new feature is a lens memory with two different settings. Each of them saves not only zoom, focus, and shift, but most other important picture settings as well, including Picture Mode. I did find that minor lens shift tweaks were needed when I switched between the memories. But this feature is nevertheless a godsend for users who have need of it, such as using the zoom method to go from a 16:9 to a 2.35:1 screen.
The exhaust vents are located along the curved front of the chassis. There’s a significant amount of light leakage from these vents—not enough to affect the onscreen image but enough to be annoying, depending on the viewer’s location relative to the projector. The XV-Z30000 isn’t as quiet as the latest, near-silent Sony or JVC designs, but even with its lamp on high (Eco+Quiet Off), while standing 3 to 4 feet from the projector, the fan noise was masked by most soundtracks and was never distracting.
The Sharp refreshes at 120 hertz (60 Hz for each eye in 3D). In either 2D or 3D, the projector converts 24 fps (frames per second) sources—essentially all movies on Blu-ray—to 60 Hz by adding 3:2 pulldown. This isn’t the best approach, as it throws away the advantages of 24 fps (which avoids frame judder). But on a wide range of program material, it produced no obvious visible artifacts.

Each of the 11 Picture Modes can be set up separately for 2D and 3D. I worked with User1 and User2 for 2D, and Dynamic (3D) for 3D. Using Dynamic mode doesn’t exactly send a thrill up a video perfectionist’s leg (more likely a chill), but you need all the brightness you can get with any projector for 3D, provided it doesn’t do serious damage to the image. Dynamic mode also engages the Bright Boost control—a control I’d never recommend for 2D.
A CLR Temp (color temperature) control offers five fixed-white balance settings. Finer adjustments, which you’ll need for a precise calibration, were limited in my sample to single overall red, green, and blue controls, not high and low. The adjustment possible with two so-called CMS (color management system) controls was even more limited. Each can deal with just one color, chosen by the user. After hours of tedious fiddling, with test tools at hand, I decided the visible benefit of these CMS controls was so subtle and inadequate that I left them off for all the results presented here.
The single color temperature/grayscale adjustments, however, proved more useful than you might expect, since the grayscale deviations out of the box were relatively uniform across the brightness range. After a few hundred hours of use, however, that might not necessarily be the case. It will depend on how consistently the projection lamp degrades with age at high and low brightness levels.
There are two iris controls. Iris1 (Manual) offers just two fixed settings: High Brightness and High Contrast. Iris2 (Auto) engages a dynamic iris that closes down on darker scenes to enhance the projector’s black level.
The Eco+Quiet control switches between the high- and low-lamp modes. Sharp claims a lamp life expectancy (to half brightness) of 3,000 hours with Eco+Quiet set to On (low lamp), but does not specify the life expectancy with it off (high lamp). A critical viewer will likely want to use the lamp on high with a screen of the most preferred sizes, and should plan on replacing it much sooner than its specified life—perhaps in as little as 1,000 hours. The MSRP for a replacement lamp is $500.
A gamma control offers five different fixed settings. The -1 position ultimately worked best for me in 2D, but other settings were useful on some sources. The measured gamma is a little non-uniform with Iris2 selected (Auto), but that’s typical for a dynamic iris. The projector also offers Custom Gamma control, but this proved less useful than I had hoped

Color and Detail Enhancement controls offered no improvement in the accuracy of the Sharp’s images, so I left them both at their minimum positions. There’s also a separate Anamorphic control (directly accessible on the remote control) for those who plan to use the Sharp with an anamorphic lens.
The projector offers no motion smoothing/motion interpolation. DLP projectors, despite their high operating speed, can’t totally eliminate motion smear, but they are generally a little better at it than other projection technologies. In any case, since I never use motion interpolation, even when it’s included, I didn’t miss it here.
A Reset control returns all of the settings for the mode you’re in to their factory default settings. But be careful. There is no “Are you sure you want to reset this mode?” warning. On two occasions, I accidentally reset all of the controls while making some fine adjustments. Luckily, I’d written down all the settings—a word to the wise.
A 3D menu offers controls to turn 3D off or on (although it will come on automatically when the projector senses a 3D source), select the appropriate 3D mode when necessary, and enhance or subdue the 3D depth in 16 steps. There is no 2D-to-3D conversion mode.
The Sharp XV-Z30000 comes standard with two pair of active glasses and an external IR 3D transmitter to activate them. The glasses offer the option of turning off the 3D effect for individual viewers who may find 3D uncomfortable, allowing them to see a 2D picture without a double image.
The remote lacks backlighting but can directly access each of the projector’s inputs (including two HDMI), select or deselect the two iris modes, change the Eco+Quiet (lamp) setting, cycle through the picture modes, adjust the most often used picture controls, activate the lens memory modes, and more.
2D Performance
All of the testing and viewing of the Sharp XV-Z30000 was done with between 100 and 225 hours on its projection lamp. The projector’s HD video processing was good (see the Video Test Bench). The 2:2 HD failure was borderline.
While I alternated on occasion between the two screens available to me—a 101-inch-wide, 2.35:1 Elite (specified 1.1 gain) and a 78-inch-wide, 16x9 Stewart StudioTek 130 (specified 1.3 gain), the Elite saw the heaviest duty. The observations here, unless noted otherwise, reflect the results on that larger screen. The low-lamp setting (Eco+Quiet on) was far too dim for use on a low-gain, 101-inch screen, so I chose high (Eco+Quiet off). I also set Iris1 to High Brightness, which together with the high-lamp mode produced a peak 2D brightness of about 20 foot-lamberts on the Elite. I actually had to turn down the Contrast control by several steps to get the level this low: This is one very bright projector! I would have preferred a multistep adjustment for Iris1 instead of the two fixed options.
I did all of my viewing with Sharp’s auto iris (Iris2) engaged. Automatic (dynamic) irises can dramatically improve the peak (full-on/full-off or sequential) contrast ratio, but they don’t always do so without side effects, such as obvious pumping of the image brightness as the iris opens and closes. However, the XV-Z30000’s auto iris (Iris2) worked beautifully. The only times I thought I caught a hint of it operating turned out to be in the source material itself.
Similarly, the ubiquitous single-chip, DLP rainbow effect (brief, random, and annoying flashes of rainbow-like color) was virtually absent here. The Sharp uses a six-segment (RGBRGB) color wheel operating at 5x, or 150 revolutions per second (6x or 180 rps in 3D). In dozens of hours of watching, I can’t recall a single serious attack of the rainbows, and I’ve always been hypersensitive to them. Some individuals are not.
Out of the box, and after properly setting its Brightness, Contrast, and Sharpness controls, the Sharp produced a subjectively good picture. Its color balance was definitely off, but not in a way that would be obvious to most viewers. Once the lamp had settled in, however, a full calibration improved matters significantly. But as noted earlier, short of that new firmware, there were simply not enough color controls, with sufficient flexibility, to massage the projector into a first-class calibration.

The most serious offender was the color gamut. The location of green, in particular, was oversaturated and pulled slightly toward yellow. This slices off some required colors on the left side of the CIE chart (see HT Labs Measures), colors that are needed for an accurate HD (Rec. 709) color gamut. This green position, according to my ISF contacts, can also add as much as 20 percent to a projector’s brightness.
Was the Sharp’s color, to the eye, truly awful? Not at all. Post-calibration, the grayscale was both measurably and subjectively respectable. While the color gamut was definitely off target, the deviations were not anywhere near as visible as you might expect. The oversaturated reds made bright-red objects pop a bit too much, magenta edged toward purple, and cyan was a bit undersaturated. But the average viewer will not likely notice any of this and will be fine with the Sharp’s color as is. The poppy red fan club has a large, happy membership.
Still, I wasn’t happy that I couldn’t hit the HD standard dead-on. The fussy videophile (like me) can hope for the day when Sharp at least provides a full set of white balance/grayscale controls (high and low), and a full color management system that works properly, with full adjustments for the three primary and three secondary colors.
Improving on the Sharp’s color would be a big deal, because in all other respects, this projector blew me away. I wasn’t impressed with the earlier XV-Z17000, but the changes Sharp has made with this new model, both functional (a better dynamic iris in particular) and ergonomic (full motorized lens adjustments, with memories), puts it squarely in the home theater projector race.
The Sharp’s picture is as detailed as any projector I’ve reviewed, and sharper than most. That includes some far more expensive models. Its sharpness extended across the full width of the 101-inch Elite screen; when viewed close up, the pixels at the edges were very nearly as well defined as those at the center. Single-chip DLPs have an inherent advantage here over LCD and LCOS designs, since with only one imaging device, there are no panel-alignment issues. Chromatic aberration—a lens artifact that can produce misalignment of the colors as well, particularly as you move away from center—was not totally absent . But it was not an issue.
The Sharp’s black level, even with its dynamic iris engaged, was not quite as deep as in the best of the recent Sony and JVC projectors. But it was nevertheless very good (see HT Labs Measures).
The result of these strengths, which was not really compromised subjectively by the projector’s inaccurate color, was compelling performance on a wide range of material. Despite its shaky-cam cinematography, Battle Los Angeles looked terrific. It’s a mostly brightly lit film and was consistently crisp and sharp. Its inherent color balance is subdued in most scenes, but its flesh tones on the Sharp looked natural and believable. War Horse, apart from its battle sequences, is far more colorful. The green of the British countryside looked realistic and not in any way cartoonish (turning the Color control down a few steps helped). The special features on this box set, all of them in HD, looked even better. The outtakes from the film, the behind-the-scenes shots, and the talking-head interviews looked truly spectacular on the Sharp.
As for black level and shadow detail, only the darkest, lowest-contrast scenes turned a little foggy. But such scenes are rare, and very few projectors I’ve reviewed can do significantly better with them. In any event, you will want to use the dynamic iris. Without it, the dark scene performance was significantly degraded. With it, the gloomiest scenes in, for example, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 were rich and deep, with fine shadow detail.

3D Performance
Sharp claims this projector produces a bright, punchy 3D image, and in a relative sense that’s true. But also true is the fact that there is a dramatic loss of brightness from 2D levels, even in the Dynamic Picture Mode. In that respect, the XV-Z30000 is little different from most 3D displays we’ve tested.
But even the Sharp’s 3D was punchier than you might expect—more so than many of its competitors. One reason for this is its relatively low gamma in 3D (mostly under 2.0 at best). A low gamma lightens the middle of the brightness range and gives the impression of a brighter image, despite a low peak-white level. The dark 3D glasses help minimize the image washout a low gamma can often produce.
The Sharp’s convincing and satisfying 3D images were also notably free of ghosting. On The Adventures of Tintin, reviewed on page 77, it worked beautifully, offering some of the best 3D I’ve seen—a credit both to the source material and the projector. Ditto the remarkable, live action plus CGI on Legends of Flight, a 3D IMAX documentary about the building of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
In much of the 3D I watched on the Sharp, I went back and forth as to whether I preferred the 3D versions, with their greater depth, to the 2D versions with their much higher punch and brightness. As usual, I came down on the side of 2D brightness. But watching 3D on the Sharp was great fun, and I never regretted the time I spent doing it.

Conclusions
Ultimately, the Sharp misses a Top Pick selection by a nose, largely because of its color issues and value. I could have easily gone either way with the call. But my video perfectionist side won out on color. On the value side, both the Sony VPL-HW30ES and the JVC DLA-X30 are available, similarly equipped, for about $1,000 less. Both offer superior color and deeper black levels, although they are arguably less achingly crisp, somewhat less bright (but bright enough), and more prone to 3D ghosting than the Sharp.
You pay your money and you take your choice. But I enjoyed my time with the Sharp so much that I could easily live with it indefinitely if I had no need for more accurate color or state-of-the-art blacks. I do have these needs, but if you’re not a video perfectionist, or even if you are, you owe it to yourself to see this projector.
Back in the day when all home projectors that mattered were DLPs and priced at more than $10,000, Sharp produced one of the best on the market, the XV-Z20000. These days, price pressures have made the boundaries more restrictive, but if the XV-Z30000 is any indication, Sharp could yet do it again.
