But when I started to browse each individual posts and category archives, they all returned a 404 error of "Page not found". I checked the permalinks of each posts and found nothing wrong. Permalink structure was also the same as before I reinstall the domain.

Then I googled and found a suggestion to re-save the permalink setting to force WordPress to regenerate the permalink rules. That reset everything back again…

And guess what..? It works!

It was a fast response and although I was still suggested to modify the php.ini file, they gave me a very detailed step by step guidance on how to do it. So I’d like to post the steps here and if you’re using CPanel you can certainly apply these. Thanks for Kyle from Hostmonster for the assistance!

• Step 1- Login into your cPanel.
• Step 2- Under the Software/Services category, click on the PHP Config icon.
• Step 3- In this screen, there is a section called “Install Default php.ini”. Under that section, please check mark the "IonCube" and the "SourceGuardian" check boxes (Many commercial php scripts need these turned on – if you think your script may not require the IonCube or SourceGuardian packages, it is okay to not check mark the boxes – but it will not hurt anything to check mark both boxes.).
• Step 4- Under the same section, click the "INSTALL PHP.INI MASTER FILE" button.
• Step 5- You have just successfully installed the "php.ini.default" file . But the next step is to rename it from "php.ini.default" to just "php.ini" to make it active. You can do the Rename in the File Manager screens. Under the Files category in your cPanel, please click on the File Manager icon.
• Step 6- When you click on the File Manager icon, you should get a popup dialog titled "File Manager Directory Selection". (If you do not see the popup dialog, then you need to click on the link at the bottom of your cPanel called "reset all interface settings" – and then Refresh your cPanel and click on the File Manager icon again.) In the popup dialog screen, click the "Web Root (public_html/www)" and the "Show Hidden Files (dotfiles)." choices. Finally please click the "Go" button.
• Step 7- If you already have a "php.ini", I would recommend that you Rename the file to "php.iniOld" in case you need ever need it.
• Step 8- Find the file that you just installed called "php.ini.default", Right-Click the file and choose the Rename option.
• Step 9- A new popup dialog called Rename should appear. Please start pressing your Backspace on your keyboard and you will start to see the letters disappear. Keep removing the letters until you see only "php.ini", and then click the Rename File button.
• Step 10- Your php.ini file is now active and fully functional !! Additionally, some users need to make adjustments to this file. To edit the file, you just Righ-Click the php.ini file and choose the Edit option, and then change the value like these examples show:
  • a. To increase your memory for your php pages: memory_limit = 2M —> memory_limit = 100M
    or
  • b. To turn on your Register Globals: register_globals = Off —> register_globals = On (We don’t recommend that you change this flag unless you know what you are doing.)
    or
  • c. To increase the maximum file size for uploading (there are two flags that you have to change):
    post_max_size = 2M —> post_max_size = 100M
    upload_max_filesize = 2M —> upload_max_filesize = 100M
  • d. To turn on PDO, add this line of code to your php.ini file:
    extension=pdo_mysql.so
    extension=pdo.so
    extension=pdo_sqlite.so
    extension=sqlite.so
• Step 11- Important: The php.ini file is generally directory specific. If you have "PHP5 (Single php.ini)" or "PHP5 (FastCGI)" selected in your Php Config screen, then you should not need to do anything else. If you do NOT have either of those selected, then you may need to copy the php.ini file into all of the subfolders inside your public_html directory. This may be dozens and dozens of subfolders that you have to copy the file into. Also, sometimes it can take between 15-30 minutes before the system recognizes the php.ini file or any changes that you have made in the file.

I used to change the codes in WordPress core too. But since I found this, the Add Link Attribute plugin, I don’t need to modify any of WordPress files and the nofollow will remain in effect throughout WP updates.

I explained how to add nofollow to various links generated by WordPress PHP functions like tag links, edit post links, author’s posts links, links in the comment section. Basically, all you need to do is rewriting the original code in the form that Add Link Attribute function understands. Learn how to translate the codes on Adding NoFollow to Any Links Generated by WordPress.

However, I haven’t managed to add nofollow to the categories links using the plugin. If there’s any of you know how to do so, feel free to add to the conversation and I’ll update this article and give you the credits.

I’ve made a comment on her article about how I work on those two and of course maybe there’s still someone else who come up with better ideas. But for the moment, here’s the method I use.

How to tweet your stumbles

To do it automatically, you can use the Twitterfeed service mentioned on the Caroline’s Twitter FAQ. The first thing you need to do is discovering your stumbles’ feed address. It looks like this: http://rss.stumbleupon.com/user/LouisLiem/favorites. You can just replace my username (louisliem) to yours. Then signup for a Twitterfeed account, enter your SU feed URL and set the time, prefix etc, and your stumbles are all over the twitterverse (among your followers, at least… : )

How to purge inactive followers

I’m not sure I know how to do it on auto pilot, but there’s a website that allows you to discover which ones are inactive in a long time on one screen. It also provide you the option to bulk unfollow them.

Go to http://dossy.org/twitter/karma/, enter your twitter credentials and you’ll see a list of your followers. You can view who you’re following, following you, have a mutual with, etc based on the option you choose on the drop down menu. The list displays the twitterers username, following/followed status and their latest update time. If you see “never”, it means they never touch their Twitter account. Or they can say “1 day ago” as well as “250 days ago”. You can bulk unfollow them by marking the checkbox and click on “Bulk Unfollow”.

The FeedTweeter service

Currently, FeedTweeter is on its closed beta, so you will need an invite code. Since Steffest allow people to search for the code, I guess it’s freely distributed. At the moment it’s “waterslide”. Like Caroline says, FeedTweeter allows you to twit-plurking or vice versa!

Rand Fishkin from SEOMoz did some testing around internal links and anchor text and found some interesting results.

3. Beyond a Certain Point, Adding More Internal Links to a Page Does Not Necessarily Flow More Anchor Text Value

In my early effort to compete in Busby SEO Test, I placed links to my competing page almost everywhere on my site and feed. Whether it triggers or not bad reactions from Google, I decided to reduce the amount of patternal internal linking to my Busby SEO Test page.

Rand’s experiment suggest that previously penalized page is restored its position and indexing right away after the excessive links are removed. However, there is also an assumption that immediate change to your internal linking structure can cause another penalty. These two poles apart theory of how Google works makes either if I keep the links or not both risky alternatives.

So why did I choose to strip the links?

I believe that Google is getting more human in determining which links are natural and staying away from patterns time to time. Therefore I tried to emerge links to the articles I want to promote the most natural way. One of the methods I’m using is by writing related articles and using the related articles plugin. The related articles list is a dynamic list which content changes everytime new articles are submitted.

Other way, if I choose to display links to the Busby SEO Test page to increase awareness, I’d add the nofollow attribute to make it bot friendly .

How about links on your navbar or sidebar? I’ll say leave them as they were. I do. However I try not to add more sitewide internal links in the future.

However, there are one or two that I feel need to be added another point of view just to balance.

• Breadcrumbs are a great internal linking tool. Use them for usability and anchor text differentiation.
• In-content links not only tend to have a higher click through rate and perceived trust, but are also able to add more relevance to a link because of the surrounding text.

Breadcrumbs and in-content links are usually located below the navbar. And also, links in breadcrumbs and the content may have been mentioned in the navbar. An experiment result posted on SEOMoz explains that only the first anchor text counts.

Here’s what I mean — let’s say that on your website’s homepage, you have two links to your blog. The first link is in the top level navigation, and the anchor text is “blog.” The second link is in the body of the homepage and reads “celebrity news blog.” That second link’s anchor text is NOT going to help the blog page rank for “celebrity news” because Google doesn’t appear to count the anchor text from multiple links to a target from a single URL.

The experiment was conducted on the late quarter of 2008 and Google engineers may have modified the way G works once again. But there’s also no obvious certainty that Google hasn’t evolved on this subject. Therefore, it’s necessary to keep the links in an amount that makes sense since extra links other than the first one may not be counted.

• Link to topically relevant pages on important pages of your website. Link to important pages on every (or most) topically relevant page of your website.

The above may do good to promote an article or to create awareness for blog visitors. But another research on SEOMoz which tested the Value of Anchor Text Optimized Internal Links proves that

Sometimes, those “important pages” may be our homepage itself. In this matter, the test result shows that

Internal Anchor Text Has Very Little Impact on the Homepage

Google is being more and more humanoid in determining which page should appear on the first page of SERP and their methods in doing so seem to keep any patterned or uniform looking links out of their consideration. While I’m agree that we need to promote other relevant pages, we need to do so in the most natural way as possible. One practice I always do is writing articles based on what I’ve written before to increase the number of related articles generated by “similar post” plugins out there.

Another alternative is by adding the nofollow attribute while keeping the links visible for human visitors. If you’re having trouble adding nofollow links to links generated by WordPress, I suggest this article on How to Add Nofollow to Any WordPress Links.

• Some general directories, such as DMOZ, the Yahoo Directory and Best of the Web are still worth submitting your website to. Make sure to submit your site to the most appropriate category.

On its Webmaster Guidelines, Google used to say to “Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites”, but since at least October 2008 Google removed the recommendation. Now does it mean Google starts to see links from directories as future threats? Here’s how John Mueller responded on a thread at Google Groups:

I wouldn’t necessarily assume that we’re devaluing Yahoo’s links, I just think it’s not one of the things we really need to recommend. If people think that a directory is going to bring them lots of visitors (I had a visitor from the DMOZ once), then it’s obviously fine to get listed there. It’s not something that people have to do though .

And on a live chat documentation between Matt Cutts and Maile Ohaye:

Question: Recently, you removed this suggestion: “Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!” from your guidelines. Is there any chance that you will be discounting these kinds of links for ranking value in future?

Google’s Answer: There’s always the chance that we’ll discount directory links in the future. What we were seeing was quite a few novice people would see the “directory” recommendation and go out and just try to submit to a ton of directories, even if some of the directories were lower-quality or even fly-by-night directories that weren’t great for users. Right now we haven’t changed how we’re weighting directory links–we’ve only removed the directory suggestion from the webmaster guidelines.

Conclusion is, if you can depend on directories to refer to your site than you can spend some time to register your site. But if you’re not sure, it’s better to not trying so hard to get listed on the above mentioned directories since Google may not refer to those directories in the future.

There are also some points I’d like to supply some experiment results to support few points Wiep has listed.

• Use a sitemap. A good sitemap is useful for visitors, useful for search engines and, therefore, useful for you.

This is so true! And here’s the fact that support Wiep’s suggestion

When a Sitemap was submitted the average time it took for the bot to visit the new post was 14 minutes for Google and 245 minutes for Yahoo.   When no Sitemap was submitted and the bot had to crawl to the post, it took 1375 minutes for Google and 1773 for Yahoo.

I guess there’s nothing more to say. Read the rest of the pst and start building and submitting your sitemap if you haven’t!

• Identify your most linked-to pages, and make sure that the link juice flows to your most important pages from there, in a well-optimized way.

Ann Smarty from Search Engine Journal makes it easy for you to find which pages they are! She described the steps and how to

1. Find your site sub pages that have some ranking potential
2. Find more pages that are relevant to your most powerful pages
3. Interlink your pages using your important anchor text

Last but not least, before you head to Wiep’s post to read the whole 69 tactics, here are another two of them you may never heard or thought of

• Search for websites that already mention your business name or URL, but haven’t linked to your website. This works excellently in Yahoo!.
• Look for websites that mention your personal name, but currently don’t link to your site. Use Yahoo! for this as well.

I looked into my robots.txt file and I remembered preventing the indexing of everything started with “feed” and ”page”. The reason I did this was to not having duplicate results from my feed and my page archive.

The information about this blog got PR 4 from N/A doesn’t need to be republished with new URL, but I think I need to do the opposite with my feed related post. So, here it is and I hope it’s still useful.

Feed Error! Source Feed is Too Large…

…maximum size is 512K. This is the error I was getting when I noticed that my feed wasn’t updated with my latest post. At first, I thought that it was due to the blog security precautions I implemented earlier. But when I was done rolling back all the changes, the feed error still occured. Actually, the error itself was pretty self explanatory. But the first thing came up in my mind was the changes I committed the day before. Second was, I didn’t know what to do to troubleshoot the issue.

Now, after figuring out that undoing all the changes didn’t work, I started to look for help at the FeedBurner Help Group. I learned that there are two ways to reduce your feed’s size.

1. Through your feedburner account
2. From your dashboard options

Through your feedburner account

You can add a variable after your original feed address. Here’s from the group directly:

1. Sign in to your FeedBurner account.
2. Click the title of your FeedBurner feed on the My Feeds page.
3. On the feed management page that appears, click the Edit Feed Details… link just below your feed’s title.
4. In the Original Feed Address field, change the address listed there from an example like the following:

   Code:

   http://myblogname.blogspot.com/atom.xml
   OR
   http://myblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default

   to the following format:

   Code:

   http://myblogname.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?max-results=3

   (Note that max-results sets the number of posts you want to have appear in your FeedBurner feed. Any integer value between 1 and 500 is permitted.)

5. Click Save Feed Details. Your changes are immediately applied and FeedBurner re-burns the newly shortened (or lengthened) feed.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work for me. But try it, maybe it works for you.

The other way to the feed troubleshooting is by reducing the number of items displayed under the “Publicize” tab, in the “BuzzBoost” section on the left. If it fails, change from displaying full feed to just summary feed.

From your dashboard options

If you prefer to stay with full feed to give the most to your readers (or if the above doesn’t work either), go to your WordPress dashboard, head to “Settings”/”Options” | Reading. Look for the setting labeled “Syndication feeds show the most recent” and reduce the number. Mine was 50 and currently I set it to 25…Thank God IT WORKS!

Whether site load speed affects SERP directly is still arguable. But there are more than enough reasons to believe that site load speed does influence your site’s popularity indirectly.

The larger your page is, the longer it takes to load and fewer people will stay and read the content. Less people know about your content, there’s going to be not uch left to spread the words on your writings by bookmarking, re-tweeting, linking, commenting or even subscribing to your feed.

With Google nowadays takes into account factors like feed subscribers, bookmarks and incoming link to decide a page’s position, it makes sense to optimize our site load speed in order to achieve higher ranking in SERPs.

Across the internet we can find hundreds of articles suggesting ways to minimize site load time. The popular ones are reducing images, third party scripts to eliminating uneccessary php requests.

On my Busby SEO Test entry, I tried to apply those techniques by having the unecessary parts for the competition thrown out and leave them intact for regular visitors. The modification was performed to the sidebar and footer area. If you compare the sidebar and footer between my Busby SEO Test entry and this one for example, you’ll see that the Busby SEO Test entry has no sidebar while the other one has.

Having no sidebar containing banner ads and scripts will increase load time and for the competition, I decide not to load them. I did that by executing a set of command when the blog fulfills a condition declared in the source code.

If you’re not on competition, you can display category based messages to your visitors or anything else you can think of. Interested?

There’s not going to be many programming involved. It’s no rocket science but you still need to make backups before.

We’ll going to use the file sidebar.php for the example. What I’m going to do is adding some codes that will make the blog displays an empty sidebar when visitors are reading my Busby SEO Test page.

• Open the sidebar.php and put this code on the top or right after div id=”sidebar”

The above codes says that “if the visitor is reading post number 17 then…”. Here, you can make adjustment according to what condition youu want to check. It can be if a visitor is viewing the archives page, an article from a certain author, articles from category X, etc. They are called conditional tags in WordPress. For more conditional tags, you can find them here.

• Right after the code, supply the command you want to be executed. In my case, nothing. So I’ll just write

• Or if you want to add something, you can do it this way

• You can simply stop here and see the results. But in my case, there’s another condition I must anticipate. That is when people are reading pages other than the page specified above. So instead of the above code I’ll go with

• So, the full code I use to display an empty sidebar when people are reading the Busby SEO Test page and display the full sidebar when they’re on the other pages is

Pretty simple isn’t it? As alternatives to (is_single(‘17’), you can choose from the following:

• is_home() – blog is displaying the main page
• !in_category(1) – blog is displaying articles from categories other than category 1 (notice the exclamation mark)
• is_page() – blog is displaying a page
• is_archive() – blog is displaying the archive list
• (is_home() || !in_category(1) || is_page() || is_archive()) – blog is displaying either the main page or articles from categories other than category 1 or a page or an archive list

PageRank is one of the aspects Google takes into valuation when determining a page’s SERP. The better its PageRank, the higher its possibility to sit on the top placement of SERP. There are loads of articles explaining how to get a high PageRank already but there are less which tell us to preserve them.

In my partaking in Busby SEO Test, I’m trying to limit the amount of values passed by outgoing links in order to preserve the original page’s rank and keeping the value passed high.

The action is based on two most common theories about how an outgoing link affects the page it comes from or the page it leads to.

The first hypothesis states that the more outgoing links a page has, the less PageRank that page will be. In this case, the outgoing link influences its origin.

A second thought declares that no matter how much the outgoing links will be, the page’s rank stays. The number of outgoing links will have an effect on themselves. For example, page A has 5 outgoing links. Therefore, each link will only get 1/5 of the whole value passed throughout the links on page A while the rank of that page remains unchanged.

As uncertain as which one above reflects Google’s algorithm, the following may be applied. It combines both opinions where the amount of links affects the page where they come from and at the same time determines the value of each outgoing link carries.

Based on those possibilities, I tried to anticipate the decrease of my Busby SEO Test page’s rank and limit the number of outgoing links carrying link juice. However, since there are pages I required to link no matter what, I added the attribute nofollow to the link tag. The links than can be outed from your priority list are such as, the edit article link, the RSS subscription link, the affiliate banners, the tag archive links, the bookmarking links, edit comment link and more.

In your opinion, is it worth doing? Does adding nofollow affect your page’s rank much? Or, does having a lot of nofollow tags can harm your rank?

Some others do concern about duplicate content, but choose to battle plagiarism the other way. Instead of tracking scrapers, they concentrate on churning top notch content for their loyal readers. There are also a group of bloggers who make use of feed plugins to attach their copyright notice automatically on every feed. This method won’t stop scrapers from stealing content, but at least it will show web visitors the origin of the article.

I myself believe that Google is getting smarter in determining which page is the original publishing. Google uses a lot of metrics to determine a page’s rank and doesn’t depend solely on backlinks or similarity of a page one another.

In my participation in Busby SEO Test, I’m obligated to link to the original contest page. Since there are some of the contents I need to write based on the content on the contest page, I tailored my Busby SEO Test page differently from the contest page. I’m hoping that Google will see my page as a different page referencing to the contest page, not duplicating it.

Twitter’s blog also mention the dangerous excess of this phishing activity and there are also numbers of blogs spreading the word of caution to phishing traps.

Through the screenshot, we can see at least three differences between the fake one and the real login page (see the arrows). They are the URL, the PageRank and the flag icon beside the address bar.

We both know the first two, but what’s the flag icon?

Here I’d like to share another Firefox extension to help you identify the legit website. The flag icon is called Flagfox for Firefox. Flagfox shows the country where the website’s server is located and guide you to the detailed location and information. Just click on the flag ison and here’s what you see for the fake Twitter.

Been wondering what the questions were?

They were about “facts” you hear almost everyday which probably you never heard them coming out from Google themselves. You are following them because a lot of people say so and assume that they’re right.

Now the statements, myths, “facts” has been cleared and debunked. Make sure to read the myths uncovered below before starting your day or tuning up your site with pointless optimizations!

Duplicate content will penalize your site – Google says:

• Don’t worry too much about duplicates on your own site.
• We’re good at ignoring duplicates.
• Make it easy for us to find the preferred version.
• Help us to crawl efficiently.
• Be reasonable when re-using content from other sites.

Mixing HTML/XHTML will break verification – Google says:

Webmaster Tools accepts both kinds of meta tags, regardless of your page’s code or doctype.

However:

• The site must be reachable!
• The verification code depends on account + site URL. 
• Sometimes it takes a second attempt.

Getting listed in 1000s of search engines and directories is important – Google says:

• Do you use 1000s of search engines? 
• Most search engines will find your site before you find them.
• Submitting does not significantly change things.
• Your email spam will grow exponentially.

Participating in Google AdWords, AdSense or Analytics will help or harm your site – Google says:

It won’t.

• They’re great products though!
• Google Analytics is a great aid to make the most out of your site.

If a keyword is important, it’s important to repeat it in important locations on important pages so that the page looks more important to important search engines – Google says:

Please don’t stuff keywords into your content.

• There is no optimal “keyword density.”
• Write naturally, write for your users.
• Too many mentions distract users.
• However: don’t hide what you really mean!

Using XML Sitemaps will make your site drop – Google says:

Nope.

XML Sitemaps are useful:

PageRank is a measure of the quantity and quality of links to a page.

• Google uses PageRank.
• Google also uses over 200 other factors.
• Toolbar PageRank is updated a few times a year.

Resubmitting your site regularly is vital – Google says:

Nah.

• Resubmitting does not change crawling, indexing or ranking.
• Once we know about a URL, we’ll plan accordingly.

Once your site ranks high, don’t touch it – Google says:

Some things get better when left alone. Websites don’t.

• Happy users will return.
• Give users something to look forward to.
• Changes in ranking can and will happen.
• Other sites won’t stand still!

Valid (X)HTML will make your site rank higher – Google says:

<h1>nah</h2>

• Most of the web uses invalid code (less than 5% is valid!).
• Browser are used to it, search engines too.
• Extremely broken code is very, very rare.

However:

• Valid code may work better on more browsers.
• Valid code makes finding & fixing some issues easier.

• Check the reputation of the site & author.
• Apply common sense: if it’s too good to be true, it most likely is.

• Comment & ask questions!
• Subscribe via e-mail or RSS to stay on top of things!

Google Webmaster Help Groups

• When in doubt, ask!
• Lots of knowledgeable users & Googlers are active in the Help Groups.
• Search before you ask.
• Be kind, helpful & constructive.
• Share your knowledge!

Some myths demystified above will perhaps relieve most of you since some things don’t need to be worried as much – like the keywords and dupes thing. But there are also some real facts that require us to do more effort in optimizing our site such as not taking care of the site once it ranks high.

• What weight does the age of a site and the amount of time a domain is registered for have on it’s search placement?

Athough Moderator is in its early release, standard features are already within reach, such as:

• Viewing unmoderated comments from your desktop.
• Dock and system tray notifications of the number of unmoderated comments.
• Accept, delete, and spam comments from within the desktop client.
• Close application window, or minimize it to the system tray while running.
• Shows the Gravatar icons for the user who posted the comment.

Moderator currently requires version 2.6+ of WordPress be installed. Also, you will need Adobe AIR 1.1, which runs on Mac, Windows, and is currently in beta on Linux. And as soon as WordPress 2.7 is released, this application will support the comment moderation methods that will be included. That should eliminate the need to even install the WordPress plugin. All that would be needed would be the desktop client itself.

Being able to moderate comments without having to log in to the admin panel is helpful enough in my opinion. Another thing I’d like to see in the next release would be the ability to moderate several blogs. Thank you, Daniel!

…until a few days ago, I had my content on one of my social network accounts deleted due to improper linking to an adult dating site. I was surprised knowing that I haven’t changed anything in my profile for the last weeks. So I decided to send a clarification message asking what content got deleted. The reply I received then mentioned that the link pointing to the adult dating service was one of my d95.com links.

BAD BOY! It turns out that d95.com has discontinued their service and sell the domain. All links shortened with d95.com are now directed to a web page like this:

To be honest, I and I guess all who are using their service not for spamming purposes are very dissapointed with their decision to take down the service and provide no solution to the circumstance. One problem that will surely make the users busy is altering the shortened URL into the original URL or another link that works. But how are we going to find out where we have put the shrinked links? Is there any way to locate them and replace them quickly?

For the links you put in your blog posts, one of the solutions I use is using the PHPMyAdmin in my hosting account CPanel. This tool allows you to search directly into your blog’s database for posts containing the word “d95.com”. Here’s where you can find the PHPMyAdmin assuming your CPanel is similar to mine.

*Disclaimer: Please do this tutorial at your own risk. I have practised the tutorial myself for many times and have had no problems. Even so, I’m unable to be held responsible for any errors or malfunctions occured in your blog or database while performing these steps.

Click the link and the next thing to do is choosing your blog’s database from the list on the left panel. That will bring up the tables contained in the database.

To locate the desired phrase – in this case d95.com – , click the “Search” tab as shown in the picture below.

The link leads to a form where you can enter your search keyword, your search rules and specify which tables you’re going to search in. To find all posts containing shrinked URLs using the deceased d95.com service, my search query looks like this:

You can then see how many results are found above the search form. I have 19..

Click on the “Browse” button to see what posts they are and you will see a table with columns such as ID, post_author, post_date… etc.

Take a look at the “post_name” column. The content might be look like this:

Among the regular slugs we usually see to direct users to our individual articles, there are slugs we barely ever see. The phrases we need to change are the ones in the regular slug forms. In my example above, they are in the “web-hosting-tips-which-web-hosting-service-fits-me” kind of slugs rather than “548-autosave”. To group the regular slugs and make the selection easier, click on the columns name (post_name).

Then, watch for the record having the regular slug and click on the pencil icon to edit the content. You may want to edit the post in a new tab. You’ll know why at the end of the article.

Inside the record, there’s a field named “post_content”. There’s the body of your article is stored. It’s in HTML format, by the way..

What I do next is locating where the keyword I’m looking for (d95.com) is. I use Firefox’s search function and here’s how mine looks:

Replace the link and when you’re done, go to the bottom of the page and save your modification. You will be directed to a table which shows all your posts. So if you edited in a new tab, you can refresh the tab where you clicked the pencil icon and refresh button above the tables. You can see that the number of records containing the phrase you want to change is reduced. This means your modification was successfully saved.

For further checking, view your blog and head to the post you modified earlier. In my case, the link should not point to d95.com anymore and so should yours .

I once read in a blog post that in order to avoid unrelated ads showing up on your page, you need to close the comment section. This, however can be a turn off for some blog visitors, knowing that they’re unable to speak their mind.

A second solution is offered by Google themselves, which I think a lot better one. Using section targetting, we are allowed to tell Adsense which is the main content of the page. Therefore, another parts of the page which are not included won’t affect the ads showing up on our page. To implement section targetting, all you need to do is juat adding a set of special HTML comment tags to your code. These tags will mark the beginning and end of whichever section(s) you’d like to emphasize or de-emphasize for ad targeting. The format is as follows:

Being implemented to the individual article template, the final code may look like the following:

It may take as long as 2 weeks before the crawlers take into account the changes. And also remember that it is against Adsense’s policies to use the section targetting to display ads irrelevant to the real content of your page. Feel free to try and hopefully more relevant ads mean more revenue:)

Instead of displaying the profile picture as usual, it is now placed on the right sidebar and you can now browse some categories without directly from any page you’re at through the links on the header.

Redesigns also take place when you view other member’s profile. Look at the picture below, stats are now displayed on the right sidebar and yes, you can browse categories from this page also!

Twhirl – a desktop client Twitter tool, powered by ADOBE AIR platform. You can read the list of features on the website, but here are why I personally like Twhirl:

• it’s a desktop application
• that allows multiple account login at a time
• and minimizes to the tray
• while showing tweet updates
• but allows to pause notifications also
• and empty the list of tweets
• sends tweets quite fast
• unfollow directly from Twhirl
• and let’s not forget fast auto updates

TheMattinator.com – there are a  lot of Twitter tools that allow sending tweets to multiple accounts but like Twhirl, you need to type and submit the tweets one by one on each account. This is what makes The Mattinator being superior to Twhirl. You only need to type your tweet once and woot! All your accounts are updated. So whenever I feel like spamming updating my 2 Twitter accounts, Mattinator it is…. But what about Ping.fm?

Ping.fm is able to update even more services than Mattinator does. Ping.fm takes care of your blogger and wordpress.com account, Facebook, Friendster and various microblogging platforms. Which for that reason, I prefer Mattinator if I only want to update my Twitter accounts. Of course I also use Ping.fm, but in a limited way.

Twitter Karma – you’ll definitely love this tool. Once logged in using your Twitter login, you’ll be presented your friends and followers like below

• what it says was, “Here are your friends. Friend A is following you, but you aren’t. B is following and you are following him and you’re a fan of C since he’s not following you”.  You can also view their latest updates time stamp to figure out whether they’re active users or not.

• Get the idea? You can check friends or followers and have them followed/unfollowed/blocked at once. A real time and bandwidth saver than having to browse through pages and click on each profile to follow/remove.

TweetLater is when you need to schedule future tweets. I’m aware that you can do the same thing with EasyTweets, but TweetLater has something EasyTweets doesn’t.

• TweetLater lets you to automatically send a warm welcoming (or cold and snarky) messages to new followers and auto follow them.

• To auto send welcome messages, you need to filter your email and send notifications from Twitter to TweetLater. It’s not that scary and everybody can do it by following their step by step manual.

The other tools I’m going to mention here are the ones I’ve just met with. I either new to them or haven’t spent a lot of time using them and I’d just like to spread the words out. Feel free to give them a try!

Dwigger – an interesting tool that enables voting and threaded conversations on Twitter tweets.

WhoShouldIFollow – looks at who’s following you that you’re not following back and has sliders for filtering by popularity and physical location – TopRankBlog.com

Twerpscan – if there are opportunistic marketers following everyone under the sun in the hopes those good souls will just automatically follow them back, this tool might help identify those whom you may want to block – TopRankBlog.com

Twittad – an advertising agent that targets Twitter users as publishers. You can charge a certain amount to have advertisers use your background to advertise their products. Price is likely based on how many followers you have got.

These tools are probably not the best, but they sure come in handy. Please aware that some of these tools are also widely opened to be used as a spamming devices. It is entirely up to the users (our) integrity to limit themselves from abusing services. I hope you (and your followers) enjoy their benefits!

Realizing that it WAS from Entrecard themselves, I tried to remember what I’ve done that considered spamming. I found that a few days before, I sent emails to blogs under the “Music” category introducing my blog. However I was still in doubt that introductory messages are spam wih Entrecard.

So I went on reading the “Illegal Activities” on the rules and found that it was. It’s my bad for not checking with the rules before sending the messages but I was sure also that I had no intention to spam.

The next thing I did was sending a “reconsideration plea” to Entrecard support containing all the things above. I’m not copy-pasting my email here, but in the letter I admitted my blunder and gave an assurance that such thing will never happen again, …and also some “good deeds” I’ve collected during my EC membership (that is, never received a single warning from Entrecard since I signed up with them. Better than nothing ). And remember to keep the tone polite.

The response was out of expectation!

In addition Ben responded in 15 minutes, he also reinstated my account. Woo-hoo! Why I was so happy? Because I have 15,000 Entrecard credits available to sponsor some contests! Haha..!
