Stephanie Drury, Overly Religious Bakers, Portland is Evil, and Cheerleaders

After a two week recording hiatus, the gang is back together, and Amy starts everything off with a harrowing story of survival and triumph of the human spirit at a female pastor’s retreat.

Our guest this week is the very funny Stephanie Drury who blogs at Stuff Christian Culture Likes and also runs @FakeDriscoll on Twitter. We had a number of things to discuss, from Christian men who want women to dress more modestly to why Mark Driscoll is legitimately dangerous to the documentary Holy Rollers, which features Stephanie’s husband and a Christian blackjack crew.

We’re pleased to introduce a new feature: Amy’s Fear o’ the Week. (Spoiler alert: it’s bees.) In the Echo Chamber, we run through a host of topics: the similarities between narrative in pornography and Christian art; Portland’s role as the least Christian city in the United States; more wedding cake makers who refuse to provide cakes for gay couples; and whether or not high school cheerleaders should be able to plaster Bible verses all over those really elaborate banners cheerleaders always make. The last point turns into a discussion of free speech and the separation of church and state.

In the final act, I talk a bit about my new blog, The Burnsider, and Amy has a story about seeing Stevie Wonder on her plane.

CultureCast: Game Church, Jason Collins and Driscoll

Our guest this week is Drew Dixon, the editor-in-chief of GameChurch.com. Drew talks to us about video games, and their value within faith and culture.

Later, in the Echo Chamber, the gang discusses Jason Collins, the first NBA player to come out of the closet. Then we talk about Mark Driscoll, and his latest controversy, which involved talking about how blowjobs are biblical. Did he say anything about men performing oral sex on women? He did not. Christian is annoyed by that, and Amy thinks Mark Driscoll is physically attractive, which was news to us.

We also touch on Bitcoin, some hippy protestors outside Amy’s church office, and this leads me to ask how Amy deals with annoying people. There are some vague Recommendations, as well, though you’ve probably heard them.

Is Bitcoin the one-world currency mentioned in the Book of Revelation? Are vegan strip clubs as good as advertised? Are Doritos Locos Tacos delicious? Is Amy Piatt having a bad week?

Find out, on this week’s episode of the CultureCast!

This is a different show than we’ve ever done. For one, we recorded outside. For two, I mostly edited the episode, which is why this show took so damn long to get out. It was a learning process.

Our guest is Christian’s grade school friend, professional hacker Mike Collins, who’s here to tell us about BitCoin, an entirely online currency that was just made up by a bunch of dudes. We also discuss a bunch of other stuff, including where progressive Christian thought is headed and if it’s at all relevant in a world where the center of Christianity is shifting toward the Eastern and Southern Hemispheres. This somehow devolved into me imagining a sci-fi scenario where there’s a statue of Christian Piatt in Tiananmen Square 140 years into the future.

Oh, and we talk about Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University, which we are all fans of.

Jim Wallis Returns and the Worst Week in America

Not to get all braggy here, but this episode is pretty great.

First, we have our first return guest, and it’s one of our best: Jim Wallis. Christian moderated a discussion with Jim at Powell’s Books last week. I swear, Jim Wallis is incapable of saying uninteresting things. What an honor to have him back (even if I didn’t get to be there).

Obviously, it was a crazy week here in the US, so we spend the second half of the show talking about bombings and explosions and ricin. I promise, it’s not as depressing as it sounds. Namely, we wanted to talk about racial profiling when it comes to terror suspects, the shifting tectonics of how we get news in America, how to talk about tragedy with children, and how much faith is to blame in religious extremism.

Seriously, even with horribly serious subject matter, this was a really fun show to do and talk about, and we use our senses of humor to cope. We hope you enjoy.

Tony Jones, the Celebration of Death, Amy’s Humiliation, and a Fond/Inappropriate Farewell to Brennan Manning

But there’s so much more! We welcome Tony Jones, one of the founders of the Emergent Christianity movement, to the show. He and Christian recently attended the Subverting the Norm Conference, and Tony stirred things up by subverting the norm of what people were talking about at Subverting the Norm. (He made some critical observations is what I’m trying to say.) If you’re into the soap opera of theologian interpersonal relationships, you’ll enjoy this interview.

Toward the end, we talk a bit about the death of Margaret Thatcher and the tragic suicide of Matthew Warren, Rick Warren’s son. Mainly, we’re just pretty pissed that anyone would celebrate the deaths of another human being. Then we say goodbye to Brennan Manning in maybe a not so appropriate way. I blame the Piatts.

CultureCast Goes Commando: A Stupid Test on Religion, Game of Thrones, Road Rage and The Beatles

We didn’t have a guest this week, so we decided to take a Pew poll on religion. We got all of the questions right! And by “we”, I mean “me”, because Amy and Christian got one wrong. The poll itself shouldn’t be too difficult for listeners, but the statistics afterward about how various faith groups scored definitely is astonishing.

In the Echo Chamber, we talk primarily about Game of Thrones but also about 20 other shows that we’re into including (but not limited to) Amish Mafia, Downton Abbey, Billy On The Street, Homeland, Shameless, Duck Dynasty and Justified. Between the three of us, we watch far too much TV.

Later, Christian recommends More or Less: Choosing a Lifestyle of Excessive Generosity by Jeff Shinaberger, which is about simplifying life and reorienting our consumptive life. Then Amy calls out Christian for his “agro-driving”, and I was torn because I’m prone to road rage, but Christian DID tailgate a student driver. Then Amy convinces me to convert to their church because their sermons are only 10 minutes long, which is probably as close to heaven as you can get in church. Also, we talk about our favorite albums, Beatles and otherwise.

He also discusses the challenge of marketing to Christians overall.

In the Echo Chamber, Christian and I discuss Rob Bell’s announcement that he’s okay with gay marriage, which should come as no surprise. Later, they talk about the sordid Steubenville rape case, which turns into a debate over the definition of rape.

Later, I recommend Neil Gaiman’s novel American Gods, and Christian is digging the Netflix original series, House of Cards. This turns into a discussion about the Golden Age of Television, which is one of my favorite topics.

Jordan and Christian are finally back together after weeks of travel, and they catch us up on their adventures, including why Christian nearly lost hist sanity trying to park his car in Mexico.

They talk with Chris Baker of Ink 180 Tattoos about his tattoo ministry with former gang members and sex workers. His story is inspiring and is helpful for anyone trying to figure out what God is calling them to do in life.

In the Echo Chamber, they talk about a story where a woman kills her Child, suffocating her by stuffing roses down her throat during an exorcism, and gets away with it, and they consider a teen’s story about why God made her have a car accident.

The Nones, The League & Death of the Nuclear Family

Jordan took his family to Disneyland this week, so Christian recruited his wife, Rev. Amy Piatt to co-host. They act pretty much like what you’d expect a married couple hosting a radio show together to act like, so that’s kind of entertaining in itself.

Then, after interviewing Shannon Moore, a Christian minister in Texas who has been denied ordination for a decade for being out about his sexual orientation, Christian promptly deleted the interview by accident (sorry Shannon!). WE’ll have Shannon back on soon, but for this week, we’re sharing an interview Christian did with Welton Gaddy on State of Belief Radio about a Washington Post piece Christian wrote called “Don’t Call Us the Nones: In Praise of Religious Independence.” Christian explains why the phrase “The Nones,” referring to religiously unaffiliated people, smacks of the dying remnants of Christendom in our culture: a cultural dynamic we’d do better without, thanks.

Then Amy and Christian tackle Olympian-turned-killer Oscar Pistorius in the Echo chamber, along with Tim Tebow’s recent refusal to speak at a prominent Dallas Baptist Church. From there, the conversation moves into family values and gender roles, taking a look at Phyllis Tickle and some blowback she’s gotten for claims that changing gender roles have negatively affected communities of faith and family as a whole.

Finally, Christian asks Amy why so many women like The League, a TV show about men in a fantasy football league. Basically her conclusion is that women find pleasure in watching men be idiots and tear each other down.

So we’ve got that going for us.

Stuff White People Like with Christian Lander

This week, Jordan and Christian go way outside of their sphere of personal experience and into the world of white folks. Specifically, we chat it up with author and screenwriter Christian Lander, best known for his bestselling book, “Stuff White People Like.” We talk about white privilege, why humor is sometimes the best tool for getting at difficult truths and why so many knockoff versions of his meme have been, well, let’s say not as good as the original.

We also do a recap of the Christopher Dorner story, the rogue Los Angeles cop who went on a killing spree and got caught in a cabin up in the woods east of LA. We do some analysis of Zero Dark Thirty, one of the most celebrated and controversial films of 2012, and then we cover the newsworthy bits from the President’s State of the Union address (Christian) and have a look back at what was worth watching at the Grammys (Jordan).

Oh, and although we’re not technically part of the Catholic College of Cardinals, we toss in our two cents about who should be the next Pope. Because, yaknow, what we think on this matters to the Vatican and stuff.

We close out with a heartfelt farewell for Richard Twiss, a great man and an inspiring spirit who we lost far too soon. Peace, Richard.

Ian Ebright on Drone Warfare, the Return of “Community”, and Wondering Why Women Love “The League”

After hearing an anecdote about Christian’s massive parenting fail (which cost him $75), we welcome our guest, Ian Ebright, a contributor to Relevant Magazine and Red Letter Christians, and founder of Broken Telegraph. He is currently raising funds on Kickstarter for From the Sky, a film on the Christian perspective of drone warfare, so he’s an expert on the subject, and brings a balanced perspective to the issue. Well worth a lesson if you’re interested in America’s foreign policy, or wars, or the future, in which our robot overloads control the skies.

In the Echo Chamber, we discuss the LAPD’s crazy rogue cop. Not to brag or anything, but according to reports, I’m a better shot than the guy. In Recommendations, I promote FX’s The Americans and the return of Community, and Christian talks up one of my favorites: The League, which is surprisingly appealing to the women in our lives.

Author Sarah Thebarge, the Super Bowl, and Beyonce’s “Softcore Porn”

In the intro, Jordan (you know what? I’m typing this, so I should stop talking in the third person) discusses the top contenders for the Willamette Week’s Top 10 Oregon Beers, so that’s a definite listen for beer nerds.

Later, Portland author/really smart person Sarah Thebarge stops in to discuss her upcoming memoir, The Invisible Girls, which details her battle with breast cancer and the story of how she befriended a family of Somali girls. You will hear MUCH more about this book in the coming months, so get to know Sarah here.

In the Echo Chamber, we (plus Amy Piatt!) discuss the night the lights went out in New Orleans and Beyonce’s “softcore porn”. Christian and Amy wonder how 1/3 of Americans could believe God impacts the outcome of sporting events, and I push back because I’m a simpleton who believes in concepts like God being a deity. It gets into some nice theological territory for those of you who like that sort of thing, which I’m guessing is most of you. Finally, we talk about the moron who didn’t tip because he gives God 10% of his income.

New Sincerity, Learning to Love Mark Driscoll, and More On Gun Control

Why Christians Aren’t Funny

A couple weeks ago, Relevant Magazine (the most relevant of all magazines) published an essay on Christianity’s tenuous relationship with humor titled Why Christians Aren’t Funny. Christian and Jordan consider themselves moderately funny and definitely students of comedy, so they invited the article’s author, Larry Shallenberger, on to discuss the topic of Christians and their weak-ass senses of humor. Larry is a pastor and writer from Eerie, Pennsylvania, and long-time member Burnside Writers Collective. They discuss the cultural implications of not being funny, why Christians aren’t historically linked with comedy (it’s probably because of Northern European roots), and the value of humor in spirituality. Later, Christian and Jordan discuss the Oscar nominations and make a few picks. Then they discuss a local news story in which someone covered up the “ST” on a stop sign with “PO”, and talk to an artist in Boulder who sells poop signs online. Tony Campolo, Which is All You Need to Know, Really.

The boys are starstruck this week talking to author, pastor and sociologist Tony Campolo. Tony discusses aspects of the book he co-authored with Shane Claiborne, Red Letter Revolution, and how different generations are approaching the words and acts of Jesus. He also explains why it’s so difficult for people to see Jesus’ words simply, and the greatest threat facing American Christianity today. I mean, really, it’s Tony Campolo. That’s all the reason you need to listen.

Later, Jordan discusses what he hates about British soap opera Downton Abbey, and blames socialism. Christian wonders why network television drama is so inferior to its cable counterpart, and then it’s Antichrist of the Week time. Jordan has a controversial one.

List-o-Mania in the Key of Culture-Casting, and the Antichrist and Sandwich of the Week

This week is all about end-of-the-year lists. Jordan runs down his ten favorite songs from 2012, and gets over his embarrassment at including OneRepublic’s “Feel Again”. Christian then breaks down the top quotes of the year, most of which include Mitt Romney’s verbal miscues. Then they run through their favorite films, television shows, and books, and there are plenty of controversial picks and bickering and, if you’re into sensationalism, they talk about strip clubs, sending people photos of your junk, and Charles Barkley’s exploits in downtown Scottsdale.

And on that note, we’re introducing a couple new segments to the show: the Antichrist of the Week and Sandwich of the Week. We have fun.

Jacques Ellul, Christian Anarchy, and Joel McKerrow

W. Paul Young on the Creative Process, Theology, and Being One of the Highest-Selling Authors in History

This week’s episode was recorded in the youth group room at First Christian Church in downtown Portland. To start things off, Jordan talks about being the Marv Marinovich of comedy by relentlessly pushing his daughter to be funnier while Christian embraces the black magic that is naturopathic medicine.

This week’s guest is W. Paul Young, author of the wildly popular novel The Shack, which has sold 10 million copies to date. Paul talks about the creative process, about trusting God rather than trying to please, and the development of his latest book, Crossroads. Basically, it’s just an interesting conversation with a fascinating person who’s also incredibly gracious and humble.

In the Echo Chamber, it’s all about gun control. Christian and Jordan discuss how our spiritual beliefs and cultural biases impact our stance on gun control and violence. Since Christian’s a pacifist and Jordan’s a veteran who grew up around firearms, they bring some varied perspectives to the conversation. Jason Boyett on THE END OF THE WORLD

Since he authored Pocket Guide to 2012 and Pocket Guide to the Apocalypse, Jason is clearly an expert on the subject. They discuss the odds of the world ending tomorrow (12.21.2012), the ways in which we could die (Yellowstone National Park blowing up, asteroids, etc.), and why people are so obsessed with the end of the world in the first place.

Justin Lee on Rescuing the Gospel from the Gay-vs.-Christians Debate

After a delightful anecdote about Christian’s daughter and a painful listen to the worst version of “O Holy Night” ever recorded, Christian and Jordan welcome Justin Lee, founder of the Gay Christian Network and author of Torn: Rescuing the Gospel from the Gays-vs.-Christians Debate, to the show.

Justin was raised in a conservatives evangelical culture, and around the time he reached puberty realized he was gay. He has since found a call from God in his ministry of reconciliation between those in the LGBT community and those in the church currently wrestling with issues of sexual identity. The guys ask him about clobber passages, the potential pitfalls of trying to bridge such an explosive cultural divide, and whether the Apostle Paul might’ve been gay.

In the Christian Echo Chamber, Pat Robertson says something entirely reasonable about science! Then Bill O’Reilly said something about Christianity being a philosophy, which he was either wrong or not wrong about, depending on your perspective. Either way, the War on Christmas is stupid, and Jordan gets kind of upset about it at the end.

Rev. Amy Piatt on Sexuality, Beer and Ministry

Although Jordan Green and Christian Piatt have had lots of authors on the show so far, they haven’t had many ordained ministers doing actual work in a church.They’ve also been called to the carpet for having too many dudes on the air.

And then it occurred to them: Christian’s wife, Amy Piatt, was right there in the next room!

After some coaxing and promises by Christian to attend various holiday parties, she agreed to come on the show and talk about what it’s like being female ordained clergy in the 21st century. They also talked about the Piatt’s recent “Beer and Hymns” event at their downtown Portland church, why some guys can’t seem to get over seeing boobs behind a pulpit and whether Kimbo Slice got a fair shake in his bid as an MMA fighter.

Okay, to be fair, this last part was really just Jordan and Christian derailing the conversation.

The sophomoric duo also cover some music and TV recommendations, discuss the recent viral story about Larry DePrimo a policeman buying a guy named Jeffrey Hillman on the street some shoes and what the right response is to someone we think is in need.

And then someone made a fart joke or something and they both forgot what they were talking about. Typical.

Tripp Fuller on Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse

In this episode, Jordan Green and Christian Piatt share the virtual mic with Homebrewed Christianity Godfathers Tripp Fuller and Bo Sanders to discuss the AMC zombie show, Walking Dead, how Zombie Theology can be applied to scripture and what every good Christian needs in order to survive a zombie apocalypse.

Green and Piatt go uber-hipster on some local Oregon brews, and Piatt geeks out on his favorite tech gadgets of 2012. They bounce the U.S.’ role in Syria and the college football restructure madness around in the echo chamber and, for the first time, welcome Christian’s wife, Amy, into the Homebrewed lair for pithy sideline commentary and a little bit of bongo magic.

Who says these guys aren’t consummate professionals? No, seriously, somebody should say it, because they don’t listen when we say it.

Peter Rollins on God, Gin and Zombies

This week, Jordan Green and Christian Piatt mosey up to the bar for a chat with pyro-theologian Peter Rollins, author of “Insurrection” and the forthcoming “The Idolatry of God” (Jan, 2013). They talk about the Death Drive, why billionaires aren’t actually selfish and how we’ve made an idol out of the beliefs we often claim as central to our Christian faith.

We also talk about the proper way to make a Hendricks gin and tonic, whether IPAs are better in the states or across the pond, and what theological themes we can glean from the AMC zombie show, “The Walking Dead.”

Jordan and Christian also break down the mostest awesomest inventions of the year, Elmo, David Petraeus and internet privacy, and a handful of recommendations you simply have to check out if you claim to have an actual life that has any meaning.

Donald Miller on Writing, Fear, Faith and the Future

Christian Piatt and Jordan Green sat down around a mic with author Donald Miller, best known for his faith memoir, Blue Like Jazz. They talk about why Miller voted twice for Barack Obama, even though he’s a Paul Ryan fan (wha?!), how the movie studio Pixar saved Apple and why narrative is the lifeblood of people, communities and businesses alike.

Don reveals much about his upcoming book, talks about what he’s doing with his Storyline Conference and spars with Jordan and Christian on what it takes to be a truly great writer. Hang onto your MP3 players, kids, ’cause this is one conversation you won’t want to miss.

And because of the great dialogue, we’ve extended the interview to take up most of the show. We’ll have more from the Echo Chamber, Christian Cliches and other segments next time, but for now, enjoy this face-to-face writer smackdown with three dudes elbow-deep in the business.

So, yeah, that’s a big deal. And yeah, we’re pretty much breaking the story.

In the Echo Chamber, we talk about the election, Superstorm Sandy, scary movie commercials, and, you know, a bunch of other stuff. Finally, we discuss some common Christian cliches.

Rev. Phil Snider, LGBT Rights & Going Viral [CultureCast 11]

Over the weekend, our friend Phil Snider had the unexpected pleasure of going viral. Not him personally, really, but a video he appeared in this past August snatched more than 2.5 million views after Gawker picked it up. Phil is a Disciples of Christ pastor in Springfield, MO, and he was speaking on behalf of LGBT rights at a local city council meeting. What he said and how he said it were nothing short of remarkable. Christian Piatt and Jordan Green were fortunate to get a chance to sit down and chat with him…especially since it was before all the big major media folks got a chance to!

We also talked over some theology in the context of the Lance Armstrong scandal, and how he relates in some ways to Mars Hill Pastor Mark Driscoll. We toss out some TV recommendations and cap it all off with some Church Sign Epic Fails.

Christian Piatt and Jordan Green have cranked out another edition of the Homebrewed Culture podcast, this time with special guest Chad Gibbs, author of the book, God & Football, and the soon-to-be-released Love Thy Rival. Both books explore the culture of sports, fanaticism and faith, and Chad also drops a few gems about “Travel Hacking,” a strategy he and his wife use to travel the world for nearly nothing. Green and Piatt also look back on the Summer Olympics, deliver the smack down to children’s television in a new “hater” segment, chat up the DVD release of the Blue Like Jazz movie, and yes, satiate your hunger for mediocrity with more Church Sign Epic Fails.

If we’re not careful, these guys might make a habit of this and keep hanging around. What do you think?
