Pinterest challenge fun graduation gift

Last weekend we attended our first graduation party of the season. I knew we were giving cash, but I wanted to try something different than just the standard card.

I had pinned this idea a couple weeks ago and knew it would be perfect. The original idea uses a 2 liter pop bottle {you can check it out here}.

I made a smaller version with a plastic water bottle. I made the label and gift tag on my computer and used some scrapbooking paper and ribbon to dress it up {of course I used the school colors}. I attached the label to the bottle with glue dots {they are super strong and don't show}.

This would also be a great gift idea for birthdays as well!

Mustache bash

Wow, now that spring is here the days seem to just be flying by. Along with warm weather spring also brings a full calendar of activities at our house. Just this morning I had to say goodbye to my eighth grader who is taking a school trip to Washington D.C. for four days. I also have to prep for the garage sale I'm having this weekend!

Anyway, last weekend my daughter celebrated her tenth birthday with a mustache themed sleepover. I got most of my ideas from Pinterest and am excited to share some pics of the bash with you today!

Every girl received a cool mustache and pin when she arrived.

I found these adorable pins here.

The drink station...we wrapped water bottles in mustache duct tape and had mustache straws {I found the mustache straws by accident at Walmart for just $1.00 per pack}.

To dress up the food station I used paper lanterns from last years mad hatter tea party.

We had a walking taco station so the girls could make their own dinner.

All of the signs I just whipped up on picmonkey, printed and put in a frame.

For dessert my daughter didn't want a cake just ice cream. I set up an ice cream bar with tons of yummy toppings. I wish I had some pics of it, but by the time I set it all up the girls had already plowed through and it was a hot mess!

We played the cheetos snack toss game which you can find here. Somehow the girls ended up covered in shaving cream {not part of the game} and our driveway was covered in cheetos {part of the game I didn't think of before hand}. They had a blast with this one!

I also made this game of NAME THAT STACHE. I used picmonkey and the facial hair overlays to put this together. If I figure out how to make this a printable I will share it with you!

I would say the mustache bash was a success and all the girls had a great time!

Birthday party planning

It's hard for me to believe but my youngest is turning ten next week. She is a bit like me in that she LOVES planning parties and we usually start planning for her birthday months in advance.

This year we are saving money for our upcoming vacation so our birthday budget had to be under $100 for everything {food, decorations, invitations etc.}. She decided she wanted to have a sleepover with a mustache theme. FUN!

I put together the invitations on picmonkey {yes they have a mustache overlay} and printed them on cute paper I picked up at Hobby Lobby with a coupon of course!

Today I am decorating and getting all the food together!
Tonight will be ~~loud~~ a blast with a house full of ten year old girls!

Pinterest challenge owl chalkboard

I'm back today with another idea I pinned from Pinterest! I love being able to check off some of the cool ideas I've pinned!

Last week while on one of my weekly trips to Michael's craft store I came across this cute wood owl cut out {I have a thing for owls lately}. My mind started churning with ideas, and bingo I remembered something I saw on Pinterest. The best part was that I had everything else I needed at home already.

Here is what my owl looked like when I brought it home from the store.

I used some pretty blue spray paint on the top half and some chalkboard spray paint on the bottom. I made the eyes and beak out of paper from my scrapbooking stash and just glued them on.

I think this little guy will look great on my front porch!

concert ticket shadow box

Last weekend I took a little {2.5 hour} road trip with my favorite ladies {my mom, sister in law, niece, and my two lovely daughters} to Lexington, Kentucky to see a young lady by the name of Taylor Swift {you may have heard of her} perform at her red tour.

I was just as excited to see her concert as my daughters! And she did not disappoint, her show was amazing! Really good!

Since it was my girls first ever concert I wanted to do something special with their concert tickets. This is what I came up with for my youngest daughter.

Our concert journey began with a homemade sign.

My mom made each of the girls a little travel box filled with snacks and drinks for the drive and hotel stay.

Of course the girls all wore their Taylor Swift shirts to the concert and were very excited to see the famous squirrel pajamas on display!

I used a small shadow box from Ikea {I think it was $9.99}. I used some leftover fabric to cover the mat {the black and white looks great in her room}. I added a concert pic and the ticket along with a little scrapbooking card.

The perfect way to showcase her first concert experience!

Pinterest challenge red velvet poke cake

I'm back today with another pinterest challenge! I love when I finally get up off my bottom and do something I've pinned off of Pinterest.

This weekend we hosted a small cookout for our families and it motivated me to try one of the many recipes I've pinned. I decided on the yummy and colorful red velvet poke cake! I want to stress that this is not my creation or original idea, the creator of this cake is the country cook. You can check out her blog, she has tons of great recipes!

My nine year old daughter helped me put this together and it was easy and fun to do!

All the ingredients minus the eggs and oil used to bake the cake. The original recipe calls for cheesecake pudding mix, but our store didn't have that so I used white chocolate pudding.

1 box red velvet cake mix

eggs, oil, and water for cake mix

two boxes {3.4 oz.} cheesecake instant pudding mix

4 cups milk {for the pudding}

1 tub whipped topping

10 oreo cookies crushed

Step 1 bake the cake. While it cooled my helper crushed the oreo cookies.

Step 2 make the pudding.

Step 3 use the end of a spoon or other utensil to poke holes in the cake. Another fun one for little helpers!

Step 4 pour pudding onto cake and try to get down into holes.

Step 5 put on a layer of whipped topping.

Step 6 right before serving sprinkle on the crushed cookies.

It's hard to tell here, but the pudding really does go down into the cake.

This was YUMMY!

Everyone enjoyed the cake and my daughter wants to make another one soon!

Colorful spray painted lids

I just wanted to pop in today with a simple and quick way to add a splash of color in your kitchen!

I picked up these inexpensive jars at Target {around $15.00 for all three}. Here is the before.

I knew I needed some color in our white kitchen so I grabbed the lids and gave them a few coats of spray paint. It literally took me about two minutes. The hard part was being patient while they dried!

I know it sounds silly, but those little jars make me smile!

Inside my baking cabinet

Last week I shared our newly renovated kitchen, and today I want to share the inside of one of my cabinets. I like to call it the baking cabinet {why yes I do name my cabinets} because I keep all of my baking items {mixing bowls, measuring cups, etc.} there.

I took down the door and gave the back several coats of chalkboard spray paint. My husband put some cup hooks on a thin piece of leftover trim which I then spray painted to match the door. I used my hot glue gun to attach the trim to the door.

This really comes in handy now that my daughter enjoys baking as well. Everything we need is located in one area and the chalkboard could also be used to write down recipes for her.

I love these little polka dot measuring cups. I just picked them up at Michael's on clearance for 60% off.

New roof

Last week was our spring break and we were blessed with some nice weather {finally}! We also had a new roof put on our house last week. Four days of loud banging and hammering...so glad it is done.

Our old roof wasn't terrible, but we had a lot of damaged shingles due to the strong winds we had last summer. We were also excited to get a different color and style of shingles.

The house looks so much different now!

Looking forward to some warm weather this week and getting outside to work on some landscaping and garden clean up.

Kitchen reveal

I'm am thrilled to finally be sharing our kitchen makeover with you today! Our counter tops were delivered last week and my husband had them installed in one afternoon. Now our kitchen is {mostly} complete!

We had a tight budget to complete our entire kitchen on which had to include all new appliances. Luckily I have an extremely handy husband who did all of the work himself and saved us a lot of dinero.

We spent just around $5,000 for everything! The largest part of our budget went towards new appliances {$3,000}. We spent the rest of our budget {$2,000} on everything else. The largest portion of that budget went towards new stock cabinet s and new laminate counter tops.

I can't wait any longer...here is my new favorite room in our house.

Now let's take a look at where we started this journey. If you missed earlier posts about our renovation you can find them here, here, here, and lastly here.

Our pantry was way too small and that empty wall was underutilized.

We removed all of the cabinets on the frig wall and moved our new refrigerator down slightly to make room for what would become our new larger pantry.

We {well mostly my husband} removed the old pantry.

Then my husband built a new larger corner pantry.

We also added new stock cabinets to that empty wall.

Some crown molding, paint, and new counter tops complete the room.

This side of the room stayed mostly the same.

We did remove the cabinet over the microwave and add a larger one.

My husband cut out the doors and added glass to the cabinets over the microwave. He also added interior lights inside the cabinet.

We replaced the faucet and light over the sink. I love the look of our new laminate counter tops.

I couldn't find a great before photo of our island, this is during appliance swapping.

My husband added wainscoting and trim to the island and then I painted it black. We liked the idea of the island being a different color then the rest of the cabinets.

I am beyond thrilled with our new kitchen. Of course there are things we would still like to do in the future such as a tile backsplash and new flooring, but we are happy for now!

The best part is that we can say we did it all ourselves and didn't break the bank doing it {thanks hubby}!

Winter review

Thank goodness, today actually felt like spring!

No snow or rain or wind, it was perfect.

Since I am finally able to say goodbye to the cold I thought I would do a quick walk down memory lane and revisit some of my favorite projects from this past winter.

We decided to change our formal living room into a craft space for the family {well mostly for me}!

We added on a much needed mudroom to our home.

I jazzed up a couple of craigslist tables with paint.

We also began the renovation on our kitchen.

We sure did stay busy this past winter. We were constantly working on something with little break time in between!

Luckily our counter tops arrived this week and we were able to get them installed in one afternoon. I'm happy to report that our kitchen makeover is {mostly} complete and I will be sharing it with you early next week.

Fabric covered memo board

I'm feeling much better now and looking forward to putting some finishing touches on our kitchen this week. I'm still waiting for that all important phone call letting us know our counter tops are ready! It should be sometime this week {so they say}!

Last week I was able to whip up a little memo board for the back of our pantry door. It's a great place to keep lists, menu's etc.

I started off with this bulletin board I picked up at a thrift shop for a couple bucks. I found the yellow chevron fabric {that I LOVE} at Hobby Lobby and used my 40% off coupon. I bought a yard of fabric for under $6.00 and only used half the fabric!

I used my hot glue gun to attach the fabric and then used command strips to attach the board to the pantry door.

I love the pop of yellow on the black door! Plus it was super quick and easy to make!

Spring mantel and painted birdcage

Sorry I haven't been around this week I've been battling a nasty cold. I have tons of projects and ideas floating around in my head, but my body just doesn't want to get with the program.

Over the past week I've been tweaking my fireplace mantel to feel more like spring. You know the drill...run around the house from room to room grabbing items then running back to the fireplace to see how they look and then eventually putting most of those items back where you originally found them! I know I'm not alone here! It's a game I play a lot!

After a couple of days this is what I came up with.

I wanted to keep it simple with just a few touches of blue and yellow. That mirror over our fireplace is actually our television so I couldn't put anything on it {like a cute little moss wreath}. Plus I didn't want to spend any money!

The birdcage I've had for years, and last week it looked like this.

After several coats of spray paint it looks totally different! I was considering selling this at an upcoming garage sale, but now I am in LOVE with it again!

Today I plan on staying indoors {out of that surprise snow that came overnight} and trying to rest. I might even pop in my Breaking Dawn dvd and curl up on the couch. Take care and stay warm!

Black painted interior doors

Last week I shared how our kitchen remodel was coming along and our completed pantry. I loved the look of our newly painted pantry door so much that I decided to paint the rest of our main floor doors as well.

I removed the doors and all the hardware before painting. I used a semi gloss interior paint on the doors {Glidden-onyx black}. I spray painted all of the brass hinges and even the door knobs with Rustoleum Universal Metallic paint and primer in one {satin nickel finish}.

To make the painting process easier my husband fastened the hinges and doorknobs onto pieces of wood.

To keep the doors off the floor so I could paint both sides my husband screwed pieces of wood to both ends of the door. This way when one side was still drying we could flip the door over and paint the other side.

It took three coats of paint, but it was worth all the work. We love the look of the black doors! Plus the black hides all those dirty little handprints!

In the meantime I am still ~~patiently~~ waiting for our new countertops to be delievered. I'll keep you updated on our kitchen progress!

Kitchen update finished pantry

Our kitchen remodel is still moving along. Most of the big stuff is complete, we are just waiting on our new counter tops to arrive. Unfortunately I got the call today that they won't be delivered for three more weeks!

So today I thought I would share how the pantry side of our kitchen is coming along and our new super duper pantry {can you tell I love it}!

When we started just a couple weeks ago our kitchen looked like this.

The pantry was just too small and there wasn't enough storage for our family of five.

So we ripped out the entire pantry.

We also purchased new appliances and removed all the kitchen cabinets on the refrigerator wall.

My husband framed out our new much larger corner pantry.

He also installed drywall and hung new stock cabinets.

And if that wasn't enough work he installed our new pantry door and added crown molding to the cabinets.

Then I primed and painted the pantry wall.

I also primed and painted the inside of our pantry. I promise the color isn't as bright as it looks here. I used the same pretty yellow from our mudroom.

We then installed the track shelving.

This pantry is more than double the size of our old one. Being organized makes me happy!

I really really wanted to paint the pantry door an accent color, but the hubby said "no way". We agreed to paint the door black.

Why yes, that is me in my lovely painting clothes!

And the biggest change of all...

painted cabinets

that took two long days to complete.

Just yesterday we added all our brushed nickel hardware to the cabinets.

So now we are just WAITING {trying to be patient} on our counter tops.

Still on my to do list

I also have a future to do list {after we take a breather and save some more money}

Spring shelf display

I guess decorating for spring is wishful thinking because we got more snow last night and my kids have a snow day today!

Kitchen progress painted cabinets

Apologies for not checking in all week, but our kitchen remodel is kicking my butt {literally}!

I don't know if it's normal to be sore from head to toe from painting kitchen cabinets, but yep I am! It took me two long days of priming and painting, but our kitchen cabinets are now painted and look AMAZING!

There are a million and one tutorials out there for painting cabinets so I'm not going to bore you with the details. I'm not going to lie to you either, painting cabinets SUCK! On the flip side it is so worth all the work because it makes such a HUGE difference.

Our kitchen was a crazy mess for most of this week. Since it's cold outside all the painting had to be done indoors. Our kitchen had doors and drawers all over the place.

I used Zinsser Bulls Eye primer because it sticks to just about anything.

For paint I used Behr silky white in a semi gloss finish.

Here's a little peek at how the cabinets turned out. Still have to wait a couple weeks for our new counter tops to arrive so you'll have to wait just a bit longer to see the whole kitchen.

Feeling relieved that all the major things are done.

Construction and mess...check.

Paining cabinets...check.

New appliances...check.

New pantry...check.

Lot's of little details to complete still, but so HAPPY!

Kitchen remodel progress

We are officially one week into our kitchen remodel and things are moving along quickly. Monday I shared the pantry side of our kitchen and today I am going to show you the other side of the room.

This is what our kitchen looked like last Thursday. Clean, simple and BORING!

We were thrilled to remove the old white appliances and install new one's last Friday!

We removed the small upper cabinet above the microwave and replaced it with a much larger one.

My husband added crown molding to the cabinets and built a cornice box for above the window.

My plan for today is to do touch up paint on the kitchen walls and this evening we are ordering our new counter tops.

Hopefully this weekend my husband can finish the inside of our new pantry. Right now our dining room is doing double duty as a pantry and there are boxes and canned goods everywhere!

Our kitchen remodel has begun

Happy president's day everyone!

Since the kids are off school today we are headed to a local pottery studio to paint some pottery with friends.

This past weekend was CRAZY busy! Remember a couple weeks ago when I mentioned my husband was sketching out plans for our future kitchen remodel, well the future arrived Friday. My husband can be a bit impulsive and decided to start our kitchen NOW! We've been working on it all weekend and it already looks so much better.

Today I'm going to show you just one side of our kitchen and the changes we've made in just three short days.

It's not an awful kitchen just a little boring and it lacks storage.

Here are our plans for this part of the kitchen.

1. add upper and lower cabinets to this wall for storage.

2. tear down this small pantry and build a bigger corner pantry.

3. get new counter depth refrigerator and move it down the wall to make room for larger pantry.

4. remove tiny upper cabinet and replace with larger one.

5. and 6. remove these cabinets and replace with slightly smaller ones to accommodate moving the frig down.

Makes me tired just thinking about it.

We've been working for three days and this is what it looks like right now.

The old pantry has been demolished and the new one framed and drywalled. Some of the new cabinets have been installed. We were on the fence about buying new appliances or working around our old ones, but decided to go ahead and purchase new since this is our forever house and hopefully this will be our only kitchen remodel.

We are so excited about finally getting our dream kitchen (on a budget). Our kids are less thrilled of course they didn't see what was wrong with the old kitchen...lol.

My newly painted tables

Last week I showed you my craigslist tables that I planned on painting over the weekend. Good news, they are now painted and sitting happily in my craft room!

This is what they looked like before.

I paid $25.00 for both tables and used paint I already had. I love an inexpensive project!

Now I just need to figure out what to do with our old sofa. It's really comfy so I might try to slipcover it or wait {I'd have to wait until summer} and purchase a new one. I also need a lamp and some accessories to complete the room.

Now that we have our mudroom finished I'm ready to get to work on the rest of my craft room. I still have to complete the other side of the room which is going to be a reading area. Today I am going to be painting these beauties I found on Craigslist earlier this week for just $25 {for the pair}.

I'm sure they will look great once I get them painted!

Mudroom reveal

Today I am showing off my new favorite room in our home...our mudroom!

If you've been following along the last couple weeks you will remember that we started off this project with NOTHING. This room did not exist three weeks ago. If you want to check out the building process you can go here and here. My husband built this much needed room in our garage and is now our new entrance.

Here is the new view from our kitchen where the garage entrance used to be.

This is the room as you come in from the kitchen. My handy husband also built me this shelf with hooks for all our coats.

My favorite part of the room is the built in organizational system my husband built. The shelves below the bench can hold up to eighteen pairs of shoes.

I added baskets to the top shelves to hold gloves, hats, scarves, etc. Even our dog has his own basket for his doggie clothes, leash, etc.

When the kids come home from school they each have their own space for their backpacks.

I'm actually impressed that we were able to complete this entire room in under three weeks and on a budget.

No more shoes and coats cluttering up our kitchen {jumping for joy}!

You would think we need a break from all the construction and mess, but my husband is already sketching out plans to renovate our kitchen this spring. That will be lot's of ~~FUN~~ work!

Mudroom progress week 2

I'm back today to share how our mudroom addition is coming along. I'm happy to say that all of the construction is finished! So happy to be done with all the mess that comes along with construction...tools all over the kitchen, coats and shoes temporarily scattered everywhere, not to mention all the drywall dust!

So here is what we {okay mostly my husband} has been up to this past week.

My husband mudded and sanded the drywall.

I primed and then painted the mudroom this pretty yellow.

My husband put in the flooring {with a little help from me}.

He then got started on building our bench/shoe cubby storage unit.

He has now completely finished the unit and I have given it a coat or two or three of paint. We also added baseboard throughout the room.

Tomorrow I get to do my favorite thing...GO SHOPPING! I need to find a few more accessories to go in the room. Next week I will be back with the big reveal!

Mudroom colors

Our mudroom project has been keeping me busy this week. My husband has been mudding and sanding the drywall each evening after work and as a result our kitchen and family room have been covered in drywall dust.

While he was busy with that I was trying to decide what color to paint the room. I went to the home improvement store on Sunday and grabbed quite a few swatches that caught my eye.

The problem was once I got home and placed them all out to look at I felt a ~~little~~ lot overwhelmed by all the choices.

I decided to do a little inspiration shopping to help get a plan for the room. I fell in love with a rug from Target and also found some other cute items to match. When I got home I pulled out all those paint swatches and quickly decided on my colors. It was so easy once I had my inspiration pieces to help guide me.

My husband finished sanding last night and then we got busy priming the room. This morning I painted the mudroom and love the color! Plus I had to spend a couple hours cleaning up our construction mess.

We still have quite a few things to complete but we are working hard to move this project along as quickly as possible.

Mudroom progress week 1

It's been a week now since my husband and I began the large task of building a mudroom in our garage. I'm actually surprised at how quickly the room is coming together.

I took tons of pictures of the progress and can't wait to show you all what the mudroom looks like today!

This is the door from our garage. The door we use coming and going. It leads you directly into our kitchen/family room combo. It drives me CRAZY because there is nowhere to put coats, shoes, and backpacks. The plan is to build a small mudroom beyond this door in our garage to serve as storage for all that STUFF!

Okay I know this looks really really bad...but this is our garage. That is the door that leads into our house and where our new mudroom will go.

The first thing we did was begin building a platform for the mudroom.

What you don't see here is that we put a vapor barrier and insulation under the subfloor.

Then we started framing out our walls.

We had to carry that heavy wall through our messy garage.

We added heavy insulation to make sure the room will stay warm. This is the view from inside the house.

Saturday my husband had a friend come over and help hang drywall and move the interior door.

My husband added this arch to match the rest of the doorways in our house.

It's hard to believe we accomplished all that in one week!

This week we my husband will be focusing on mudding and sanding the interior drywall to make the walls look flawless. Fingers crossed that in another week I can primer and paint the walls.
