Modelling

Some of the models used in this scene (such as lobster chair and fireplace) were modeled and some were taken from library. Credits to the house model go to Erfin Infitar (RVN). He used 3ds Max built-in hair and fur feature, and then exported it as a mesh. AS he added the tree to the interior, he did slight modification to the floor and ceiling of the original model.

Camera and Lighting

Camera and lighting was crucial in this process, In this case, he set the camera first, before play around with the lighting.

 For the main light, he used VRayDomeLight (instead of VRaySun) with a suitable HDRI file.

All the textures were taken from stock texture, he also created some spectacular map for the ceiling, wall and floor.

One thing that was new for him that he tried to creating this scene is the dew / frosted effects on the edge of the glass. He used masking (in Photoshop) to create several type of mapping for this. Each piece of glass basically has a different mapping. And he used VRay blend material, one is clear glass and the other one is frosted glass.

Rendering

There is nothing special in the rendering process. He didn’t use a very high settings for this, as seen below.

First of all, he add VRayDirt layer on top of the original render. He used this as an Occlusion pass. This layer is set as multiply. After that, he did some color balance adjustment to strengthen the mood and also curve to increase the contrast of the overall image. Next step, he added flare from Knoll Light, several glows and also a-bit of Chromatic Aberration effects, before he finally added the human into the image.

Modeling

 The 3d model of the site was built in AutoCAD (Yes… AutoCAD). After importing the SketchUP massing we used it as a template to build the basic geometry.

All buildings had to be shown during different times of the day and there was no time to illuminate them with real light fixtures, and this is without even considering the increase in render times that it would cause… so we’ve put surfaces set back slightly under the glazing to use them as self illuminating objects later.

They were split into 4 layers to allow some variation… Surfaces for inner glaze skin of the buildings.

All slabs don’t have thickness i.e. they are just flat regions.

Slab edges are represented by polylines. We are going to turn them to renderable splines in 3ds max and assign different material than the off white slabs.

Outer glazing is modeled again just as polylines, also to have renderable splines modifier applied to them. They are divided into five layers as we will be assigning five different patterns.

Just to show the offset distance between inner and outer glass.

Here is the camera viewport with some entourage from 3d libraries was added in 3ds max.

Instead of importing the DWG, it is linked to the scene to allow rapid changes and updates. Here you can see the inner glazing surfaces.

Textures is used to act as the lights inside the buildings in this scene. This is the texture for self luminance of the towers.

Final Images

This is what came out straight from V-Ray.

Replaced the sky in the background.

Reflection of the sky in glazing, ground floor activity and a bit of lens blur in the foreground.

Color balance and contrast corrections.

Final image with cutout people and vignette added.

Exterior lighting makes an exterior looks good is the environment and pretty easy to put in the scene. Also, the modeling was pretty straight forward, box modeling, extrude and things like that.

Here, Vray Sun and Vray Sky used for lighting, because will gives you a nice lighting and also a physical solution. Let’s check out the position and setting of the sun.

Vray physical camera is pretty important to find the perfect exposure for you lighting, it gives you more control about the lighting affects the scene and make some test and look for reference about what kind of lighting you want your for scene.

To have a more natural feeling of a complete environment, there is added some pictures and boxes of real buildings in the front and back of main building.
